The Government's plan to tackle childhood obesity in England -

:00:00.:00:00.

campaigners accuse them of watering it down.

:00:07.:00:13.

There will be no curbs on sugary supermarket promotions,

:00:14.:00:16.

but there is a scheme to cut added sugar by 20% in food and drink.

:01:25.:01:27.

Find out how they got on in their semifinal

:01:28.:01:29.

The Government has been accused of watering down its long-awaited

:01:30.:01:45.

strategy to tackle childhood obesity in England.

:01:46.:01:48.

Campaigners are angry that the action plan

:01:49.:01:50.

that will be published tomorrow does not contain curbs on junk food

:01:51.:01:55.

advertising or restrictions on cut-price supermarket promotions.

:01:56.:01:57.

Instead, the onus is on more physical activity in schools

:01:58.:01:59.

and a scheme for the food industry to cut sugar content in food

:02:00.:02:04.

and drink enjoyed by children by 20% over the next four years.

:02:05.:02:07.

And a tax on drinks with added sugar will be confirmed.

:02:08.:02:15.

Dancing in the playground - part of one school's bid to help

:02:16.:02:27.

pupils keep fit and avoid longer term health problems

:02:28.:02:29.

The Government's strategy aims to further boost physical

:02:30.:02:32.

Healthy food for school meals is another part of the plan here

:02:33.:02:38.

in the London borough of Haringey, but there's a recognition there's

:02:39.:02:40.

only so much they can do and there's a much bigger problem to be dealt

:02:41.:02:44.

We're surrounded in this area by a whole host of cheap, you know,

:02:45.:02:53.

99p chicken and chips meal deals and if you're on a lower income,

:02:54.:02:58.

you know, you'll be drawn to those deals, or supermarkets that

:02:59.:03:00.

are offering perhaps lower quality food at a price that's affordable.

:03:01.:03:03.

The new Government plan for England is trying to tackle that,

:03:04.:03:07.

focusing on cutting added sugar content of products in shops.

:03:08.:03:09.

Food price promotions are more widespread in the UK

:03:10.:03:12.

Making healthy choices isn't always easy, as this mum,

:03:13.:03:17.

A lot of the stuff that are on offer are usually

:03:18.:03:23.

the unhealthy stuff, the cakes, the biscuits, the crisps.

:03:24.:03:25.

The things that are healthy, like the vegetables, the fruits,

:03:26.:03:28.

they're the things that are never like buy one, get one free.

:03:29.:03:31.

The Government's new childhood obesity plan tomorrow is expected

:03:32.:03:35.

to include action on the reformulation of products to contain

:03:36.:03:43.

20% less sugar over the next four years, and moves to promote

:03:44.:03:46.

there will be no action on low price supermarket deals

:03:47.:03:55.

on unhealthy food and promotions during family TV shows.

:03:56.:03:57.

Work on the obesity strategy has been going on for months

:03:58.:04:00.

David Cameron had been set to unveil it.

:04:01.:04:03.

Now, Theresa May has taken her own view on what's

:04:04.:04:06.

a reasonable balance between voluntary action

:04:07.:04:08.

vulnerable to the charge that it's been watered down.

:04:09.:04:15.

Based on what they've heard, public health campaigners say

:04:16.:04:17.

the strategy has left out important measures, so it's

:04:18.:04:19.

I think this is a major crisis that we face in children's obesity,

:04:20.:04:25.

and a major crisis for the public health in the UK in general.

:04:26.:04:30.

So we are very disappointed if these measures are not taken.

:04:31.:04:36.

Ministers will highlight the moves to encourage more sport in schools,

:04:37.:04:41.

details of the tax on sugary drinks, which is in addition

:04:42.:04:44.

Plans in Scotland to improve diets have also been published today.

:04:45.:04:48.

Policy makers can only hope the measures do something to reduce

:04:49.:04:56.

what is seen as a major threat to the nation's health.

:04:57.:04:59.

There are some concrete measures - why are campaigners angry?

:05:00.:05:07.

One senior health source put it to me, if you had said a year ago, the

:05:08.:05:12.

Government would be introducing a sugar tax and cutting sugar content

:05:13.:05:17.

on a whole range of food and drink, you might have thought it was a

:05:18.:05:20.

significant. That is the way the Government will present it tomorrow.

:05:21.:05:23.

But attention has focused on what is NOT in it. Public Health England

:05:24.:05:28.

came up with proposals last autumn which included curbs on and on

:05:29.:05:34.

supermum supermarket promotions - and they are not in the plan,

:05:35.:05:36.

leading to suggestions that the whole thing has been deluded. People

:05:37.:05:41.

have been highlighting the cost to the NHS, more than ?5 billion a year

:05:42.:05:46.

in England. It is being published in August, during the Parliamentary

:05:47.:05:48.

recess, during the Olympics. The Prime Minister, the Health Secretary

:05:49.:05:53.

and the Chancellor are all away. People are asking, does this raise

:05:54.:05:56.

questions about the Government's commitment to this agenda?

:05:57.:06:00.

Rio's Olympic Games are already the most successful ever

:06:01.:06:02.

overseas Games for Team GB, with the team still in second place

:06:03.:06:05.

The golden couple, cyclists Laura Trott and Jason Kenny,

:06:06.:06:11.

certainly gave the medal table a boost last night as they became

:06:12.:06:14.

Britain's most successful female and male Olympians.

:06:15.:06:16.

They've been talking to our sports editor, Dan Roan.

:06:17.:06:22.

It's a record-breaking relationship like no other.

:06:23.:06:28.

Jason Kenny and Laura Trott are now the most successful male and female

:06:29.:06:31.

After their heroics last night in the Velodrome,

:06:32.:06:36.

they now have 10 gold medals between them.

:06:37.:06:39.

But today, here in Rio, they told me their phenomenal

:06:40.:06:41.

During London 2012 of course, when you were spotted canoodling

:06:42.:06:48.

behind Becks that day in the stands, you're now the new Posh and Becks,

:06:49.:06:52.

I mean are you ready for this upsurge in interest

:06:53.:06:56.

in the two of you when you get home?

:06:57.:06:58.

I mean, we still feel like Laura and Jason,

:06:59.:07:01.

We still feel like the, I don't know, the couple,

:07:02.:07:05.

like you say, we were together before London, it's just

:07:06.:07:07.

We like to live quite, I guess, a normal and quiet life.

:07:08.:07:11.

Like, we live literally in the middle of nowhere and it's

:07:12.:07:14.

quite nice that we go out for dog walks and we don't see anybody

:07:15.:07:17.

That's the way we've always kind of been.

:07:18.:07:21.

I guess, yeah, it might change and, if it does, then, we'll kind

:07:22.:07:24.

But, yeah, like I say, for us, we still feel

:07:25.:07:28.

Trott's dominant victory in the omnium last night

:07:29.:07:32.

brought her a fourth gold medal of a glittering Olympic career.

:07:33.:07:34.

COMMENTATOR: It is a special, special Olympic moment

:07:35.:07:36.

You're only 24? Weird.

:07:37.:07:39.

It's not something you kind of go out to try and achieve.

:07:40.:07:45.

In London, it felt like all my dreams had kind of come true,

:07:46.:07:49.

so to try and back it up then after that, I didn't quite know how

:07:50.:07:52.

It just seems, kind of, insane to me.

:07:53.:07:55.

Like, it doesn't seem like something I could have achieved.

:07:56.:07:59.

It's all the more remarkable given her premature birth

:08:00.:08:03.

a solution in the saddle, even trying on Bradley Wiggins' gold

:08:04.:08:13.

She decided she liked it and never looked back.

:08:14.:08:18.

When you're watching your fiancee opening up a points race

:08:19.:08:20.

and you're hoping that all her dreams come true.

:08:21.:08:22.

So, yeah, I was massively proud and dead happy for her.

:08:23.:08:27.

Kenny, meanwhile, won his sixth Olympic gold in the keirin,

:08:28.:08:30.

Kenny, meanwhile, won his sixth Olympic gold in the keirin..

:08:31.:08:33.

..emulating the achievement of his former team-mate

:08:34.:08:36.

In British cycling we have a system where we just focus on going

:08:37.:08:42.

through the process and taking each race as it comes.

:08:43.:08:44.

So, that's kind of what I've been doing.

:08:45.:08:46.

This morning, just waking up with three gold medals,

:08:47.:08:48.

Remarkably, all 14 members of Britain's track cycling

:08:49.:08:51.

?30 million worth of investment, the most of any team

:08:52.:08:55.

Although one beaten opponent called Team GB's ability to deliver when it

:08:56.:08:59.

What do you make of that kind of comment from a rival?

:09:00.:09:03.

Well, I think it's understandable, at the end of the day, you know.

:09:04.:09:06.

We go to the World Championships six months ago and we went well and then

:09:07.:09:11.

we come to the Olympics and we go slightly better.

:09:12.:09:14.

Very often other nations come to the Olympics and sometimes seem

:09:15.:09:16.

to go slightly worse, which seems bizarre to us

:09:17.:09:18.

because the Olympics is everything, you know, to our team amd

:09:19.:09:21.

we couldn't imagine, you know, we'd be absolutely

:09:22.:09:23.

devastated if we weren't going on the form of our life here.

:09:24.:09:26.

Here in Rio, Team GB achieved its target of a best ever away Games

:09:27.:09:29.

and the British Olympic Association says it's not a one-off.

:09:30.:09:32.

The really encouraging thing is, if you look through our medal

:09:33.:09:34.

success, it's not just about the medals we've won

:09:35.:09:36.

here in Rio, but there's a really strong generation coming

:09:37.:09:40.

And I think that Team GB is going to be a power

:09:41.:09:45.

in Olympic sport for many, many years to come.

:09:46.:09:47.

And that should include Kenny and Trott, the power

:09:48.:09:49.

couple of Olympic sport, set to be the driving force behind

:09:50.:09:52.

British success long into the future.

:09:53.:10:00.

Well, Team GB is guaranteed another Gold medal in the Women's 470,

:10:01.:10:04.

with Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark so far in the lead,

:10:05.:10:07.

but there was one missing ingredient - wind.

:10:08.:10:13.

Elsewhere, Mo Farah was back in action today

:10:14.:10:17.

In a moment of drama, as he almost fell again.

:10:18.:10:21.

Sun shine and sail, what a gourdious combination. Well, for fans anyway.

:10:22.:10:32.

For the sailors, wind is preferable and there was a distinct lack of

:10:33.:10:39.

that. Clark and Hannah Mills are guaranteed gold if they can finish

:10:40.:10:44.

their final 470 race. Their victory lap has been postponed though until

:10:45.:10:47.

tomorrow. We were quite looking forward to a good night sleep

:10:48.:10:51.

tonight with it all done. I guess we go through the whole process again,

:10:52.:10:55.

try and stay calm, eat properly and drink properly and get sleep ready

:10:56.:10:59.

for tomorrow. In the athletics stadium a glimpse of a defending

:11:00.:11:04.

Champion in the heats of 5,000 meters. Mo Farah wasn't going to let

:11:05.:11:09.

the blazing sunshine today affect his chance of reaching Saturday's

:11:10.:11:15.

final. A tussle on the home straight put hearts in mouths. But he brushed

:11:16.:11:20.

it off to qualify. In the mid morning sun though one athlete was

:11:21.:11:26.

feeling the heat more than most. Like Mo Farah Semenya is well used

:11:27.:11:30.

to being in the media spotlight. The the focus on her ability is whether

:11:31.:11:38.

she has an unfair advantage. She has elevated testosterone levels. She

:11:39.:11:42.

had to take medication to suppress it and her race time suffered. Since

:11:43.:11:46.

a court challenge lifted that rule, her 800 meter times have improved to

:11:47.:11:50.

the point where she's now the hot favourite to take gold in Saturday's

:11:51.:11:56.

final. In many ways though, Semenya can't win. Team GB won bronze in

:11:57.:12:01.

London, the women's hockey team is hoping for even better in Leo. They

:12:02.:12:05.

are playing New Zealand right now and are just minutes away from

:12:06.:12:09.

finding out if they can make the final. If you're going to reach the

:12:10.:12:13.

final of your home Olympics, you might as well do it in style. Neymar

:12:14.:12:19.

had the fastest goal in Olympic history they went on to win 6-0. If

:12:20.:12:30.

you have ever had sleepless nights wondering what ha human skipping

:12:31.:12:35.

:12:36.:12:42.

bizarre spectacle. Natalie pishgs, BBC News, Rio.
