Tonight at Ten: Donald Trump loses the support of another key

:00:08.:00:10.

Republican following the latest debate against Hillary Clinton.

:00:11.:00:11.

From the outset there was outright hostility,

:00:12.:00:15.

with Mr Trump under pressure after his remarks about groping

:00:16.:00:18.

If you look at Bill Clinton, far worse.

:00:19.:00:28.

But Hillary Clinton avoided discussing her husband's past

:00:29.:00:34.

and directly questioned Mr Trump's suitability as a

:00:35.:00:36.

You know, with prior Republican nominees for president,

:00:37.:00:43.

I disagreed with them on politics, policies and principles.

:00:44.:00:49.

But I never questioned their fitness to serve.

:00:50.:00:59.

And tonight the Speaker of the House of Representatives,

:01:00.:01:03.

Republican Paul Ryan, has announced he's no

:01:04.:01:05.

Following the murder of a lecturer by a man

:01:06.:01:10.

with mental health problems, his widow calls for

:01:11.:01:12.

I opened the door and there were three police officers.

:01:13.:01:19.

A call from some MPs for a vote on the Brexit negotiating position

:01:20.:01:27.

30 years after Orgreave, a former policeman tells the BBC

:01:28.:01:36.

that officers were briefed to use as much force as possible

:01:37.:01:39.

And England captain Wayne Rooney says he accepts the decision

:01:40.:01:46.

to leave him on the bench for the World Cup qualifier

:01:47.:01:48.

Coming up in Sportsday later in the hour in BBC News, we will have

:01:49.:01:54.

results from the some of tonight's World Cup qualifiers, including

:01:55.:01:57.

France's trip to face Netherlands in Amsterdam.

:01:58.:02:22.

Donald Trump's campaign for the White House has been dealt

:02:23.:02:26.

a heavy blow with the news that the most senior elected

:02:27.:02:33.

Republican in the US has announced he will no longer support

:02:34.:02:35.

Paul Ryan, the speaker of the House of Representatives,

:02:36.:02:38.

said his priority from now on is to protect his party's

:02:39.:02:41.

The announcement followed the second televised debate between Mr Trump

:02:42.:02:46.

and his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.

:02:47.:02:48.

It was, as predicted, an exceptionally fiery exchange,

:02:49.:02:51.

as our North America editor Jon Sopel reports.

:02:52.:02:56.

They walked out smiling, but as they drew closer,

:02:57.:02:59.

the awkwardness and tension were evident.

:03:00.:03:02.

And very quickly it was onto the now-infamous comments from Trump

:03:03.:03:12.

Hillary Clinton sought to broaden the attack on his

:03:13.:03:29.

He has said that the video doesn't represent who he is,

:03:30.:03:35.

but I think it's clear to anyone who heard it that it represents

:03:36.:03:39.

But it's not only women and it's not only this video that raises

:03:40.:03:46.

questions about his fitness to be our president,

:03:47.:03:49.

because he has also targeted immigrants, African-Americans,

:03:50.:03:55.

Latinos, people with disabilities, POWs, Muslims, and so many others.

:03:56.:04:03.

And this is where it got nasty and dirty.

:04:04.:04:05.

Donald Trump chose attack as the best form of defence.

:04:06.:04:08.

He brought with him women who'd previously claimed

:04:09.:04:10.

assaulted by Bill Clinton, and Mr Trump didn't hold back.

:04:11.:04:15.

If you look at Bill Clinton - far worse.

:04:16.:04:19.

There's never been anybody in the history of politics in this

:04:20.:04:25.

nation that's been so abusive to women.

:04:26.:04:29.

Hillary Clinton attacked those same women, and attacked them viciously.

:04:30.:04:34.

When I hear something like that, I am reminded of what my friend,

:04:35.:04:37.

Throughout the debate, Donald Trump moved nervously around the stage.

:04:38.:04:51.

Sometimes as though he was stalking her, often just lurking

:04:52.:04:53.

in the background as an intimidating presence.

:04:54.:04:57.

His most effective attack was over her use of private e-mail server,

:04:58.:05:00.

and then this extraordinary statement...

:05:01.:05:02.

If I win, I am going to instruct my Attorney-General to get

:05:03.:05:05.

a special prosecutor to look into your situation.

:05:06.:05:12.

It's just awfully good that someone with the temperament of Donald Trump

:05:13.:05:15.

is not in charge of the law in our country.

:05:16.:05:19.

And then the most surreal end to this most poisonous debate.

:05:20.:05:25.

Would either of you name one positive thing that

:05:26.:05:28.

His children are incredibly able and devoted,

:05:29.:05:43.

and I think that says a lot about Donald.

:05:44.:05:45.

I will say this about Hillary - she doesn't quit.

:05:46.:05:49.

This was a brutal and savage 90 minutes.

:05:50.:05:56.

Donald Trump had to prove that he could move beyond the sex

:05:57.:06:00.

scandal tape that has so rocked the Republican party.

:06:01.:06:03.

There was a tepid handshake at the end, but there's no love lost

:06:04.:06:13.

between the two of them, and no easing of the animosity

:06:14.:06:16.

either between Mr Trump and the deeply unhappy

:06:17.:06:18.

Jon Sopel, BBC News, St Louis, Missouri.

:06:19.:06:30.

So, where does last night's debate leave the prospects

:06:31.:06:32.

for both candidates, with under a month

:06:33.:06:34.

The latest BBC poll of polls reflecting opinion before last

:06:35.:06:37.

night's debate suggested 48% of US voters backed Hillary Clinton

:06:38.:06:39.

compared to 44% who favoured Donald Trump.

:06:40.:06:46.

Both candidates are focussing attention on around ten swing

:06:47.:06:48.

states, stretching from Nevada in the west to Florida

:06:49.:06:50.

There are also key states which candidates must retain.

:06:51.:06:58.

Arizona is one - Donald Trump needs to keep it in Republican hands

:06:59.:07:01.

So our correspondent James Cook went to speak to voters in Arizona

:07:02.:07:09.

In more than 60 years, arid Arizona has voted for a Democratic president

:07:10.:07:26.

only once, when Bill Clinton won in 1996. If his wife can repeat the

:07:27.:07:32.

feat, it will be thanks to the scorched earth approach to politics,

:07:33.:07:40.

but the tycoon's tough talk went down well. These people loved seeing

:07:41.:07:45.

him lay into Hillary Clinton. He may have boasted about sexual assault,

:07:46.:07:50.

but they say that she is worse. She has, after Bill Clinton's victims so

:07:51.:07:58.

she cannot stand on a pro-woman leg when she has been quite anti-woman.

:07:59.:08:02.

If you're talking about what his words are about a woman versus what

:08:03.:08:07.

Hillary Clinton and her husband have done to women, that is what is

:08:08.:08:14.

important. I believe that after tonight 's performance in particular

:08:15.:08:18.

that he should probably gain support, and I still have complete

:08:19.:08:23.

confidence in him. But there is a big problem. This dry and dusty

:08:24.:08:27.

state is increasingly diverse and increasingly democratic. It feels

:08:28.:08:34.

like a blue Island in sea. And the Democrats at this classic car rally

:08:35.:08:39.

are hopeful. I'm not a fortune teller, I teller, I wish I was but I

:08:40.:08:42.

have a good feeling about it because we have a lot more people moving

:08:43.:08:48.

into the state. What do you think of Donald Trump? For real? I'm ashamed

:08:49.:08:53.

he is actually the Republican nominee and I really hope he steps

:08:54.:09:01.

down. I won't vote for him. Why not? He's against Hispanic people in the

:09:02.:09:07.

United States. This family has been grilling here for more than two

:09:08.:09:12.

decades, in that time Arizona's Spanish-speaking population has shot

:09:13.:09:16.

up. If Latino turnout rises, Donald Trump could be badly burned. It

:09:17.:09:26.

doesn't help Mr Trump that he has been deserted by party leaders, with

:09:27.:09:32.

neither of the state's Republican Senators backing him. Donald Trump's

:09:33.:09:37.

core supporters seem pleased with his performance but the Republican

:09:38.:09:41.

Party in Arizona and across the United States remains bitterly

:09:42.:09:45.

divided. Concerns about both the messenger and the message, and with

:09:46.:09:49.

less than one wants to go, but can only be good news for Hillary

:09:50.:09:50.

Clinton. Our North America editor

:09:51.:09:52.

Jon Sopel is in St Louis. We mentioned Speaker Paul Ryan and

:09:53.:10:02.

his decision, how significant do you think that will turn out to be?

:10:03.:10:08.

Very. Paul Ryan is the most senior elected Republican in the country.

:10:09.:10:12.

He was furious at the weekend over Donald Trump's comments from a

:10:13.:10:16.

decade ago and today he has effectively cut him adrift and the

:10:17.:10:21.

leadership has done that too. That's not just saying we are not going to

:10:22.:10:26.

support you, there are logistical and financial consequences. They

:10:27.:10:30.

will move money into Senate and Congress races because they want to

:10:31.:10:35.

keep control of the Senedd. The latest poll today shows Hillary

:10:36.:10:39.

Clinton 11 points ahead. The last time that happened was in 1996, as

:10:40.:10:46.

we were hearing in the report when Clinton won Arizona. They abandoned

:10:47.:10:52.

Bob Dole and left in the fund for himself. Bob Dole took it quietly,

:10:53.:10:57.

it is far from clear if Donald Trump will take it lying down. Thank you.

:10:58.:11:01.

The widow of a lecturer who was stabbed to death in north

:11:02.:11:04.

London by a man who was mentally ill has called for concrete changes

:11:05.:11:07.

in legislation to prevent such killings in the future.

:11:08.:11:09.

Dr Jeroen Ensink, who was 41, was attacked last December

:11:10.:11:12.

as he went to post letters announcing the birth

:11:13.:11:14.

Femi Nendap, a Nigerian student, had arrested months earlier

:11:15.:11:19.

for wielding a knife in public and assaulting a police officer

:11:20.:11:22.

but the charges against him had been dropped just

:11:23.:11:24.

Our correspondent Michael Buchanan reports.

:11:25.:11:30.

I never thought I could love the way I loved him.

:11:31.:11:34.

Jeroen Ensink was an acclaimed engineer, an expert in sanitation

:11:35.:11:40.

Last December, he left his flat to post some cards announcing

:11:41.:11:47.

A daughter, Fleur, had been born 11 days earlier.

:11:48.:11:56.

On the doorstep of his flat, he was killed, stabbed repeatedly

:11:57.:11:59.

I opened the door and there were three

:12:00.:12:10.

Obviously, I had no idea what had happened, but I knew.

:12:11.:12:22.

This is Jeroen's killer - Femi Nandap, a 23-year-old

:12:23.:12:30.

Nigerian student with severe mental health problems.

:12:31.:12:35.

He admitted manslaughter by diminished responsibility.

:12:36.:12:38.

At his sentencing hearing today, the court heard Nandap was suffering

:12:39.:12:42.

from psychosis brought on by cannabis use and referred

:12:43.:12:44.

to himself as the Black Messiah at the time of the stabbing,

:12:45.:12:51.

and in May last year he had been arrested charged with

:12:52.:12:54.

wielding a knife in public and attacking a police officer.

:12:55.:12:56.

In October he stopped taking his anti-psychotic drugs.

:12:57.:13:00.

In December, the charges against him were dropped,

:13:01.:13:02.

just six days before he killed Dr Ensink.

:13:03.:13:08.

If a person with a history of mental illness is found wandering

:13:09.:13:11.

about with a knife and attacks a police officer, that person must

:13:12.:13:15.

be referred to a secure unit for assessment and treatment,

:13:16.:13:17.

Prosecutors say today it was a mistake to drop the charges

:13:18.:13:26.

against Femi Nandap, but maintained the decision

:13:27.:13:28.

would not have saved Jeroen Ensink's life.

:13:29.:13:33.

The African studies student has now been sent to a high security

:13:34.:13:36.

The utterly random nature of Jeroen Ensink's killing has

:13:37.:13:40.

forced the family to return back to the Netherlands.

:13:41.:13:44.

As the judge said in court today, there is a dreadful irony here,

:13:45.:13:49.

that a man who devoted his life to helping people he'd never

:13:50.:13:54.

known or met was killed by a complete stranger.

:13:55.:14:08.

Mental health patients kill around 60 people a year, a figure that has

:14:09.:14:12.

been broadly stable in recent years. But that is of little

:14:13.:14:20.

comfort to this family. I think it was in March

:14:21.:14:23.

when it was the first time that I actually realised

:14:24.:14:27.

he isn't coming back. It's final, he's never

:14:28.:14:29.

ever coming back. The judge said that,

:14:30.:14:31.

had Jeroen Ensink lived, his work could have improved

:14:32.:14:34.

the lives of millions. The BBC has learned that

:14:48.:14:50.

rejected the idea of a vote on the negotiation, while hinting

that parliament could be given an opportunity to approve the final

:17:25.:17:30.

to draw up negotiating terms and reach a deal without any

:17:31.:17:35.

:17:36.:17:40.

Parliament sovereign. The Prime Minister's

:17:55.:17:57.

but has now been junked. Downing Street denies it,

:19:11.:19:16.

to the public that the prices of daily things or gifts etc

would go up. But I think it should have been

:19:20.:19:23.

something everyone should have

:19:24.:19:26.

considered, definitely. Once outside, the UK might have

:19:27.:19:29.

to fall back on its membership of the World Trade Organisation,

:19:30.:19:32.

which comes with its own rule book. Currently, meat moves between the EU

:19:33.:19:36.

:19:59.:20:02.

would be new trade deals, both with the EU and

if any, tariffs will be imposed on imports coming

the Government's preferred option, but they are of course

:21:53.:21:58.

and order Now, 32 years on, for the first

:21:59.:22:01.

time, a claim that officers

:22:02.:22:06.

were ordered to use violence. This former constable was amongst

if there is an inquiry. They just emphasised the fact

:22:20.:22:27.

that they wanted to make sure that if there was any trouble at all,

:22:28.:22:30.

that we needed to stamp it out straight away, and to use

:22:31.:22:34.

as much force as possible. Well, certainly if they caused

:22:35.:22:36.

any sort of disorder. I basically thought they had given

:22:37.:22:44.

us licence to do what we want, This is the video the police

:22:45.:22:48.

recorded, picking up a senior

:22:49.:22:54.

officer's instruction to use force. No head, bodies only -

:22:55.:22:57.

an order that didn't reach everyone. These trucks were the miners'

:22:58.:23:05.

target. Lines of police made sure

:23:06.:23:08.

they could get through. The violence went both ways,

:23:09.:23:10.

no doubt, and some feel that the miners gave

:23:11.:23:13.

as good as they got. They think that it was their right

:23:14.:23:16.

to use violence to stop

:23:17.:23:19.

people from going to work. It wasn't.

:23:20.:23:22.

It's clear. The problem for them

:23:23.:23:24.

is that they lost their battle, a violent battle, to overthrow

:23:25.:23:30.

the rule of law. Who was to blame for the stand-off

:23:31.:23:38.

erupting into a running battle, and did the police

:23:39.:23:44.

use excessive force? Stefan Wysocki was amongst 95

and it was a free for all. They knocked ten bells

of crap out of me. It's not just brutality

:24:15.:24:16.

that the police stand accused of. Many of the miners were

:24:17.:24:20.

charged with riot. That is a serious offence

:24:21.:24:22.

and could have meant To prove it, the police needed

:24:23.:24:24.

convincing evidence. But there are questions

:24:25.:24:27.

about the way In their statement, many officers

:24:28.:24:29.

used the same phrases Under cross-examination,

:24:30.:24:32.

one policeman said there were a number of officers

:24:33.:24:48.

from the serious crime squad who dictated the first

:24:49.:24:51.

bit of this statement. Those detectives were following

:24:52.:24:55.

the chief constable's orders that charges of unlawful assembly

:24:56.:24:57.

and riot should be preferred But the case collapsed,

:24:58.:25:01.

and the miners were cleared. We have the names of the five

:25:02.:25:14.

serious crime squad detectives. When we approached them,

:25:15.:25:17.

two didn't respond. The others denied any wrongdoing
