Police in Turkey continued to hunt for a gun man who launched an attack | :00:00. | :00:20.
on a nightclub in Istanbul, killing 39 people. | :00:21. | :00:22.
Moments earlier, partygoers were welcoming in the New Year. | :00:23. | :00:25.
A manhunt is underway for the attacker. | :00:26. | :00:26.

Good evening, and welcome to BBC News. | :01:04. | :01:06.
Police in Turkey are hunting for a gunman who opened fire | :01:07. | :01:08.
at a nightclub packed with New Year revellers, killing | :01:09. | :01:11.
Funerals have been held for some of the victims. | :01:12. | :01:16.
Another 69 people were wounded, four of them critically, | :01:17. | :01:19.
in what the Istanbul Governor described as a "terrorist attack". | :01:20. | :01:23.
The attacker left his gun before escaping. | :01:24. | :01:26.
The shooting marks a bloody end to a year which saw Ankara | :01:27. | :01:29.
and Istanbul targeted by attacks carried out by the so-called | :01:30. | :01:32.
Islamic State group and, separately, Kurdish rebels. | :01:33. | :01:35.
The mood was of celebration, one of Istanbul's top nightclubs, | :01:36. | :01:44.
They expected a night of joy, a fresh start - not this. | :01:45. | :01:57.
Less than two hours into the New Year, a gunman | :01:58. | :01:59.
opened fire outside, bullets ricocheting as he shot | :02:00. | :02:01.
Inside, his killing spree continued - Turks and foreigners murdered, | :02:02. | :02:08.
others jumping into the freezing Bosporus to escape. | :02:09. | :02:13.
Dozens more were injured, some critically. | :02:14. | :02:16.
TRANSLATION: I had my back turned, my husband suddenly told me | :02:17. | :02:24.
A man ran inside, two or three people started firing, | :02:25. | :02:28.
I fainted at that moment until special forces | :02:29. | :02:32.
They shot randomly, there were bodies lying on the floor. | :02:33. | :02:39.
Today, the scene was heavily guarded. | :02:40. | :02:40.
Too late for the victims of last night's security breach. | :02:41. | :02:44.
There's still no word of who was behind it. | :02:45. | :02:50.
Well, this is as close as we can get to what was one of Turkey's most | :02:51. | :02:53.
renowned nightclubs, which has become | :02:54. | :02:55.
Turkey is now worryingly accustomed to these attacks, | :02:56. | :02:58.
and as perhaps the most turbulent year in its modern history | :02:59. | :03:00.
ends, another begins, yet again marked by terror. | :03:01. | :03:06.
At the mortuary, they counted up the bodies. | :03:07. | :03:08.
Muhammad from Iraq told us one of his friends was killed | :03:09. | :03:16.
"Now we are taking our friend's body home." | :03:17. | :03:24.
Visiting the wounded, the Prime Minister sounded defiant, | :03:25. | :03:26.
but after more than 20 attacks in the past year, killing | :03:27. | :03:28.
almost 400, many will see his words as empty. | :03:29. | :03:33.
TRANSLATION: Terror cannot intimidate us. | :03:34. | :03:38.
We will continue to fight against it. | :03:39. | :03:42.
Our biggest insurance is to seek our people | :03:43. | :03:44.
standing in solidarity and supporting our resolve. | :03:45. | :03:50.
And so a scene that's becoming almost routine here. | :03:51. | :03:53.
Today they bid farewell to Ayhan Arik - a brother, husband, father. | :03:54. | :04:02.
After driving tourists to the nightclub, he was | :04:03. | :04:04.
They grieved for him, and for a country they once called | :04:05. | :04:11.
safe, as they're left to wonder - what has happened to Turkey? | :04:12. | :04:14.
Earlier, I spoke to James Jeffrey, the former US Ambassador to Turkey | :04:15. | :04:24.
I started by asking how he thought the Turkish authorities had | :04:25. | :04:27.
Well, first our thoughts go out to all of the victims. The Turks have | :04:28. | :04:41.
responded as they have the wall of the other attacks, very, very | :04:42. | :04:45.
quickly and efficiently. The Turks have unfortunately have had much | :04:46. | :04:48.
experience with attacks, both from Daesh, and that's what this was I'm | :04:49. | :04:54.
almost certain, and from the PKK in the last two years. Roughly ten | :04:55. | :04:59.
major terrorist attacks with casualties running in the dozens or | :05:00. | :05:04.
more. What makes you so certain that it is an attack carried out at least | :05:05. | :05:07.
in the name of the Islamic State group? The two other attacks in | :05:08. | :05:13.
Istanbul, the airport and then an attack close to the blue Mosque, | :05:14. | :05:19.
both targeted tourists, foreigners, as well as the tourist industry in | :05:20. | :05:23.
general. Most of the people killed in the attack last night at the | :05:24. | :05:30.
nightclub were in fact foreigners. Why is is tumble, why is dirty, | :05:31. | :05:34.
being targeted in this way, do you believe -- Istanbul -- why is | :05:35. | :05:41.
Turkey? Isis is next door in Syria and Iraq. They have built a cell in | :05:42. | :05:46.
Turkey. Earlier on, when the Turks were not very... Careful about who | :05:47. | :05:53.
they were providing arms and support to in Syria. Thirdly and most | :05:54. | :05:57.
importantly, the Turks are waging a strong offensive in northern Syria | :05:58. | :06:04.
against Isis positions. There is a considerable amount, the Turks have | :06:05. | :06:07.
put their own ground. Isis sees the Turks as one of the key enemies. How | :06:08. | :06:12.
difficult do you think it will be for the Turkish authorities to find | :06:13. | :06:16.
the single gunmen, who was able to escape the chaos of what followed? | :06:17. | :06:21.
Who knows? It's irrelevant, there are plenty of gunmen who are capable | :06:22. | :06:24.
of doing this with a Kalashnikov, which is what he was armed with. | :06:25. | :06:28.
Isis has a lot of people able to do this, they have good intelligence. | :06:29. | :06:34.
All the indications from the Turkish media are that the nightclub and the | :06:35. | :06:37.
escape route and the actual operation were well planned. But how | :06:38. | :06:42.
important is it politically for the Erdogan government to show that they | :06:43. | :06:46.
have carried out a thorough investigation and tried to find the | :06:47. | :06:50.
person responsible? Your point is good. Erdogan is under a tremendous | :06:51. | :06:53.
amount of pressure. One thing he promised the Turkish people, two | :06:54. | :06:58.
things, peace and prosperity, and given the attacks by Daesh or Isis | :06:59. | :07:03.
on the one hand and the PKK and the other, he certainly hasn't given the | :07:04. | :07:07.
Turkish people peace. And in terms of prosperity, this has an impact on | :07:08. | :07:11.
the markets, it has an impact on tourism, which is a major source of | :07:12. | :07:15.
income. So word one will try very hard to catch this guy. But that | :07:16. | :07:19.
isn't going to stop the attacks. The attacks will continue until we | :07:20. | :07:23.
destroy Isis in Raqqa and in Mosul. Mr Erdogan has reiterated today that | :07:24. | :07:28.
he will root out terrorism. But how does he do that? What sort of | :07:29. | :07:36.
back-up Mike Turkey need? Better intelligence, possibly the Turks | :07:37. | :07:41.
will have to look at some of the opposition movement against the | :07:42. | :07:44.
Assad regime in Syria that have taken root in Turkey to see which of | :07:45. | :07:51.
them may have ties to Isis. But most importantly, the international | :07:52. | :07:53.
community has to get serious about Isis. Isis is sitting somewhere | :07:54. | :08:00.
around ten to 12,000 troops, defying the entire international community, | :08:01. | :08:04.
whilst the West refuses to put ground soldiers in the fight against | :08:05. | :08:08.
them. This has to stop. What is the evidence of the International | :08:09. | :08:12.
political will to do that? Of course there is a national political will. | :08:13. | :08:16.
The United States has 10,000 troops fighting in Afghanistan still today. | :08:17. | :08:21.
This is the will of one man, Barack Obama, who will be out of office in | :08:22. | :08:25.
a year. Because Obama would not commit ground troops against Isis, | :08:26. | :08:29.
the French, who have many good reasons to do so, and did it against | :08:30. | :08:33.
Al-Qaeda in Mali two years ago, they have been deterred from doing it, as | :08:34. | :08:37.
have other Western powers, other than the Turks, who are on the | :08:38. | :08:40.
ground fighting ices with great effect. How difficult might it be | :08:41. | :08:44.
when Donald Trump takes over? Even Donald Trump will be careful and | :08:45. | :08:50.
ground troops, because President Obama has put a hex on any use of | :08:51. | :08:55.
ground troops in this conflict by country up the image, you understand | :08:56. | :09:00.
that well in Britain, the image of 2000 going into a rack and thousands | :09:01. | :09:03.
of casualties and a decade of fighting. So people reluctant to do | :09:04. | :09:10.
this. It's unfortunate, because it is a totally different situation. | :09:11. | :09:13.
But we have seen this fragile ceasefire in Syria that was brokered | :09:14. | :09:17.
by Turkey with Russia. Might it be that President Putin steps in to | :09:18. | :09:24.
help Turkey? Putin's capability, other than Mass bombing of Aleppo -- | :09:25. | :09:32.
Mass carpet bombing, is highly questionable. He had one minor | :09:33. | :09:41.
victory, Isis took it back one month ago. But in an as I's capability is | :09:42. | :09:47.
against Isis are relatively minimal -- Putin and Assad's capabilities. | :09:48. | :09:50.
Police investigating the death of a 12-year-old girl | :09:51. | :09:52.
who was knocked down by a car yesterday in Oldham, | :09:53. | :09:54.
Greater Manchester, have arrested five men. | :09:55. | :09:56.
Today's family gathering should have been a celebration. | :09:57. | :10:07.
The flowers laid here for 12-year-old Helina Kotlarova, | :10:08. | :10:11.
killed in an apparent hit-and-run crash last night, a crash that also | :10:12. | :10:14.
left her 11-year-old cousin critically ill. | :10:15. | :10:19.
The girls had crossed it to buy some crisps from the local shop. | :10:20. | :10:25.
They were with a bigger group, more cousins and sisters, | :10:26. | :10:27.
but they'd already made the return journey. | :10:28. | :10:30.
The two girls held hands and stepped into the road. | :10:31. | :10:40.
When we ran there, she was on the floor, | :10:41. | :10:42.
and I was touching her, I was trying to see if she's | :10:43. | :10:47.
going to breathe or something, but she couldn't breathe or nothing. | :10:48. | :10:49.
And I've seen her face, this face was all, you know, bleeding and... | :10:50. | :10:53.
This evening, Greater Manchester Police confirmed they had arrested | :10:54. | :11:03.
five men on suspicion of dangerous driving. All remain in custody for | :11:04. | :11:07.
questioning. For the family, no news will suffer the grief. Is just hard | :11:08. | :11:13.
to believe that she's gone. Because she was too young, you know. She | :11:14. | :11:18.
still had, like, life, still. Tonight, Tripoli by tributes | :11:19. | :11:22.
continue to be laid at the scene. A reminder of life cut tragically | :11:23. | :11:27.
short, and prayers for another girl critically. | :11:28. | :11:29.
The Queen missed the annual New Year's Day church service | :11:30. | :11:32.
in Sandringham this morning because of a lingering heavy cold. | :11:33. | :11:34.
She was also absent from the Christmas Day service | :11:35. | :11:36.
at her Norfolk estate because she was unwell. | :11:37. | :11:38.
Buckingham Palace says the Queen has been up and about in recent days, | :11:39. | :11:41.
but is still recuperating as our Royal Correspondent, | :11:42. | :11:43.
For a second time during the holiday season, the Royals headed to church. | :11:44. | :11:51.
For a second time, the Queen was a notable absentee. | :11:52. | :11:55.
Her 95-year-old husband, who's also been ill, | :11:56. | :12:00.
did attend, and was described by one observer as "chipper". | :12:01. | :12:02.
Protected from rain and walking alongside her husband, Anne, | :12:03. | :12:04.
a princess in purple, told someone in the crowd her mother | :12:05. | :12:07.
During these security-conscious times, the Windsors over Christmas | :12:08. | :12:12.
are an attraction for the dedicated, who, despite the weather, gather | :12:13. | :12:15.
Once again, the 90-year-old monarch wasn't on display. | :12:16. | :12:22.
A little bit disappointed, because the Queen wasn't there, | :12:23. | :12:24.
but that is understandable at 90 years of age. | :12:25. | :12:27.
She's in the best place, yes, and I wish her | :12:28. | :12:29.
Obviously, if she's not well, then you don't want to see her come | :12:30. | :12:36.
out in this weather, do you, you know? | :12:37. | :12:38.
At Christmas, our attention is drawn to the birth of a baby | :12:39. | :12:41.
The Queen, who recorded her Christmas Day message early | :12:42. | :12:46.
in December, will not have taken the decision to miss church lightly | :12:47. | :12:49.
- the Supreme Governor of the Church of England has | :12:50. | :12:54.
But in her tenth decade, and on the advice of her doctor, | :12:55. | :12:57.
the monarch is exercising caution in the face of a heavy cold she's | :12:58. | :13:01.
The Queen has been laid low and left feeling pretty miserable at the end | :13:02. | :13:08.
of yet another significant year in her long reign. | :13:09. | :13:11.
As well as celebrating her landmark birthday, she's started | :13:12. | :13:13.
to acknowledge her advancing age and reduce her workload. | :13:14. | :13:18.
Just last month, the Queen severed her links to 25 | :13:19. | :13:20.
organisations she'd been patron of for decades. | :13:21. | :13:24.
Palace officials insist the Queen is up and about and she hasn't been | :13:25. | :13:27.
As Head of State, she continues to deal with the Government | :13:28. | :13:37.
The Queen is clearly doing all she can to get rid | :13:38. | :13:41.
of a lingering cold, rather than make it worse. | :13:42. | :13:43.
Peter Hunt, BBC News, Buckingham Palace. | :13:44. | :13:45.
Theresa May has called for 2017 to be a year of "unity | :13:46. | :13:47.
and opportunity" following the EU referendum, which she says exposed | :13:48. | :13:50.
In her New Year Message, the Prime Minister said | :13:51. | :13:53.
she would work to secure a Brexit deal for everyone, whether they'd | :13:54. | :13:56.
We are no longer the 52% who voted Leave and the 48% who voted Remain, | :13:57. | :14:04.
but one great union of people and nations, with a proud history | :14:05. | :14:07.
The bodies of three people have been found | :14:08. | :14:15.
at the foot of cliffs in Kent. Police say the body of a man | :14:16. | :14:19.
was discovered near Dover after they were alerted by a member | :14:20. | :14:21.
During a search by coastguards, the bodies of another man | :14:22. | :14:25.
Officers do not believe their deaths are linked to that of the first man. | :14:26. | :14:32.
Police have launched a murder inquiry after a man died | :14:33. | :14:34.
in a house fire in Milngavie, north of Glasgow. | :14:35. | :14:38.
A joint investigation by detectives and fire officers has established | :14:39. | :14:40.
that the fire was set deliberately, and is said to have been targeted. | :14:41. | :14:44.
The emergency services were called to Achray Place just after 7am. | :14:45. | :14:49.
The body of a man was found inside the property. | :14:50. | :14:51.
He has yet to be formally identified. | :14:52. | :14:54.
A 24-year-old woman was injured and remains in a serious | :14:55. | :14:56.
There have been delays in attending to emergency ambulance | :14:57. | :15:03.
calls across London, after the service's computer | :15:04. | :15:06.
system crashed on one of the busiest nights of the year. | :15:07. | :15:09.
Staff in the London Ambulance control room had to log calls | :15:10. | :15:12.
using pen and paper for nearly five hours overnight. | :15:13. | :15:14.
New Year's Eve, hundreds of thousands of people pour | :15:15. | :15:25.
onto the streets of the capital, creating the busiest | :15:26. | :15:28.
night of the year for the London Ambulance Service. | :15:29. | :15:32.
Its control room keeps watch over more than 600 square miles | :15:33. | :15:35.
and 7 million people using a sophisticated | :15:36. | :15:37.
But just after midnight, that system failed. | :15:38. | :15:45.
The computer crash meant that all call details | :15:46. | :15:47.
Call handlers couldn't see where the ambulances were. | :15:48. | :15:53.
They had to use radios to contact paramedics. | :15:54. | :15:56.
We do deal with the most critically ill and seriously ill patients | :15:57. | :16:01.
first, and we continued to do that last night. | :16:02. | :16:05.
Obviously, I'd like to apologise to any patients who did | :16:06. | :16:08.
have a slightly extended waiting time while we were dealing | :16:09. | :16:11.
The London Ambulance Service says because it has no computer record, | :16:12. | :16:17.
it doesn't know exactly how many calls it dealt with last night. | :16:18. | :16:21.
These were some of the incidents they attended, but there | :16:22. | :16:24.
If the system fails at a time when there is huge pressure | :16:25. | :16:30.
on the system, when, for example, there was a major | :16:31. | :16:39.
disaster or a terrorist attack, we're going to be in really serious | :16:40. | :16:42.
trouble, so we've really got to make sure, the London Ambulance Service | :16:43. | :16:45.
has got to make sure, that this system | :16:46. | :16:47.
Emergency call handlers here are trained to dispatch | :16:48. | :16:50.
Extra staff had already been drafted in for the New Year celebrations. | :16:51. | :16:54.
But the failure of their multi-million pound computer system | :16:55. | :16:56.
on the busiest night of the year is now the subject of | :16:57. | :16:59.
The system was restored by 5:30am this morning, | :17:00. | :17:10.
but it may be a while before we know how many patients didn't get | :17:11. | :17:14.
care when they needed it because ambulances couldn't get | :17:15. | :17:16.
We will have a quick look at tomorrow's papers in a moment. | :17:17. | :17:26.
Police in Turkey continued to hunt for a gunman who launched an attack | :17:27. | :17:36.
on a nightclub in Istanbul, killing 39 people. | :17:37. | :17:38.
Here, police arrest five men after a car hit two girls | :17:39. | :17:41.
in Oldham last night, killing one and leaving the other | :17:42. | :17:43.
The Royal Family attends a New Year's Day church | :17:44. | :17:47.
service in Sandringham, but without the Queen, | :17:48. | :17:48.
Hello, and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be | :17:49. | :18:05.
With me are Caroline Frost, Entertainment Editor | :18:06. | :18:08.
And Robert Fox, Defence Editor at the London Evening Standard. | :18:09. | :18:14.
Welcome to you both, and happy New Year. We haven't got long, so we | :18:15. | :18:22.
have to press on. We have the time to take a bit longer at 11:30pm. The | :18:23. | :18:27.
Telegraph headlines the government's plan to build new garden towns in | :18:28. | :18:30.
England to try to alleviate the housing crisis. It also reports on | :18:31. | :18:32.

Mail chooses to focus on the Queen missing church due to illness, | :18:36. | :18:37.
saying she has not been seen in public for 24 days. Thousands of | :18:38. | :18:40.
patients are waiting for hip and knee operations, according to the | :18:41. | :18:42.

Queen's cold is improving. Thousands of patients are waiting | :18:44. | :18:57.
for hip and knee operations, according to the Daily Express. It | :18:58. | :19:00.
also quotes Princess Anne - who insists the Queen's cold is | :19:01. | :19:01.
improving. Let's and the Independent has a picture of | :19:02. | :19:07.
a funeral of one of victims of the Istanbul attacks, along with the | :19:08. | :19:08.
story that fundamentalist schools have been downgraded by Ofsted. | :19:09. | :19:11.
Let's start with the hunt for the gunman in Turkey. The Daily | :19:12. | :19:13.
Telegraph headline is, hunt for Turkey gunman in this Gomis | :19:14. | :19:18.
massacre. -- in disco massacre. The reports that there were two gunman | :19:19. | :19:24.
dressed as Santa Claus turned out to be incorrect. They said that the | :19:25. | :19:30.
gunman took advantage of the mayhem that then institute and disappeared | :19:31. | :19:33.
into the fray. Turkish authorities are still looking for him. Not a | :19:34. | :19:38.
great way to start the New Year certainly for the Turkish state. | :19:39. | :19:42.
Absolutely terrible. On top of the fact that 2016 saw multiple attacks | :19:43. | :19:46.
across Turkey, didn't it? This is very unusual. Usually the Erdogan | :19:47. | :19:51.
government leaks through security services who they think it is. | :19:52. | :19:56.
Generally in this list of attacks in 2016, there have been two main | :19:57. | :20:02.
groups of culprits. One is radical Kurdish forces, the other is Isil, | :20:03. | :20:07.
Islamic State. It is interesting that they haven't said, a Photofit | :20:08. | :20:10.
picture has been issued, for somebody that they want, another | :20:11. | :20:15.
shooting incident in a mosque in Istanbul, where there were not so | :20:16. | :20:18.
many casualties and nobody was killed, they think that the man | :20:19. | :20:25.
indicated was from, wait for it, was from Isis, but from the Caucasus. | :20:26. | :20:30.
Very interesting. We are not saying that he came out of Raqqa or Syria | :20:31. | :20:34.
or across the border or the south-east part of Turkey, the other | :20:35. | :20:39.
thing is that he didn't blow himself up, which is the usual pathological | :20:40. | :20:45.
action of an Isil bomber. Suicide is very much part of the whole ethos. | :20:46. | :20:51.
And I think to take on what you have been saying, Turkey is in for a very | :20:52. | :20:56.
bad time. As you say, Caroline, starting in this way must make | :20:57. | :21:00.
people feel incredibly anxious. Let's look at how the Daily Express | :21:01. | :21:08.
is looking at it. Jihadi gunman kills 39 in massacre. There is a | :21:09. | :21:11.
warning for British tourists. Turkey has been an immensely popular | :21:12. | :21:18.
destination for years. I was the two years ago, the plane was deserted on | :21:19. | :21:22.
the way home because of the atrocity in Tunisia. We now have this list, | :21:23. | :21:26.
if we didn't need reminding, of all of the things that have gone on in | :21:27. | :21:30.
the past two years. They said to take normal standards of care, but | :21:31. | :21:33.
of course people will listen to that and think about may involve staying | :21:34. | :21:37.
at home. At this time of year, people are booking holidays and they | :21:38. | :21:43.
may think twice. Turkey needs Russian tourists in the summer on | :21:44. | :21:49.
the turquoise Coast resorts. Because Western Europe is just deserting it. | :21:50. | :21:54.
They need rush for two things - they need it for gas, they are dependent | :21:55. | :21:59.
on that, and because of this very valuable tourist industry, which is | :22:00. | :22:04.
suffering so badly. Let's look at the Independent. Fundamentalist | :22:05. | :22:07.
schools downgraded by Ofsted. The Independent said they carried out | :22:08. | :22:11.
this investigation and now some kind of redress is being made. There is a | :22:12. | :22:16.
particular reference to Christian fundamentalist schools here. | :22:17. | :22:20.
Belonged into a programme called accelerated Christian education, | :22:21. | :22:26.
ACE. I must say, this is quite a new one. I know they have had problems | :22:27. | :22:30.
in this area. This apparently is a movement with ten schools being | :22:31. | :22:33.
downgraded because the Independent raised the flag by saying, the | :22:34. | :22:38.
teaching is appalling. In the eyes of the Independent, and gender | :22:39. | :22:42.
issues. Particularly saying that it almost, you know, it is from a | :22:43. | :22:47.
different culture. That girls are subordinate to boys. And the | :22:48. | :22:53.
Independent quite rightly seems to be patting itself on the back for | :22:54. | :22:58.
raising this with Ofsted and the authorities. And these schools are | :22:59. | :23:03.
being downgraded. These are historic allegations. And they are to do with | :23:04. | :23:07.
things like the use of corporal punishment, exorcism is on children. | :23:08. | :23:14.
It does go on. Shall we go back to the Telegraph? Just momentarily, and | :23:15. | :23:19.
look at the lead story on here. New towns to ease the housing shortage. | :23:20. | :23:23.
Garden towns, which have been use on the past for this reason, it means | :23:24. | :23:27.
building on green belt, quite honestly. That is one of the massive | :23:28. | :23:30.
problems, people think they are going to be up against great | :23:31. | :23:34.
resistance from local communities. We talked about this previously, it | :23:35. | :23:39.
looks like a classic Theresa May jam for jams. They had to talk about | :23:40. | :23:43.
something, they want to get away from the Brexit talks, they need | :23:44. | :23:46.
something, they need some good news for 2017. And it feels to me like a | :23:47. | :23:55.
quite sort of distracting idea, that in the middle of all the Brexit | :23:56. | :23:58.
fears, the problems with who is going to be the next leader of the | :23:59. | :24:03.
Western world come January the 20th, we have had terrorism atrocity is | :24:04. | :24:06.
already on this sense of loss and fear, and we're being told that it | :24:07. | :24:10.
is OK because we're going to get some garden communities. Also, | :24:11. | :24:13.
people are not going to feel the benefits of this for many years to | :24:14. | :24:17.
come. If they can get the planning applications through. Let's look at | :24:18. | :24:23.
the Daily Express. Thousands face hip operation agony. Is this just a | :24:24. | :24:27.
function of us getting older, an ageing population? Apparently it is | :24:28. | :24:31.
where evolution went wrong, left us with rotten hips. I talk to a friend | :24:32. | :24:35.
who was a hit surgeon. He said his poor wife who was a Royal Ballet | :24:36. | :24:40.
dancer is having her fourth hip operation. They are very prevalent, | :24:41. | :24:45.
and we are getting older. With me, it's my knees, which is also related | :24:46. | :24:50.
to it. We are terrible old crocs! And laughing, it's not funny at all, | :24:51. | :24:54.
sorry! You will laugh at me eventually when it comes to me. The | :24:55. | :24:57.
waiting lists are probably quite long. This is the problem with the | :24:58. | :25:02.
ageing population. It ties in with what the Daily Telegraph is hinting | :25:03. | :25:06.
at, the fact that they are importing Spanish expats to come over and do | :25:07. | :25:10.
these dollies for looking after elderly members of society for up to | :25:11. | :25:15.
seven per fortnight to pay for people who are not that well | :25:16. | :25:21.
trained, ?1700 per fortnight. These are problems with people surviving | :25:22. | :25:24.
and hopefully thriving beyond what we have ever experienced before. | :25:25. | :25:28.
Finally, the Daily Telegraph, Duke soldiers and without the green. It | :25:29. | :25:34.
-- without the Queen. The Duke of Edinburgh is on his own again. So | :25:35. | :25:40.
many people have full the perch. A time of great sadness. I for 1am | :25:41. | :25:44.
very cheered by seeing Prince Philip's smiling face today. -- I | :25:45. | :25:51.
for 1am very cheered. We are reassured by Princess and saying | :25:52. | :25:55.
that she is on the mend. This was a shortened version, but we will back | :25:56. | :26:00.
for a longer go at it at 11:30pm. A slightly more than surely look at | :26:01. | :26:02.
the front pages. -- more leisurely. Hundreds of people were forced | :26:03. | :26:13.
to leave a West London pub last night before | :26:14. | :26:15.
it was destroyed by fire. The Aeronaut pub in Acton | :26:16. | :26:18.

the fire under control. We started to see smoke | :26:27. | :26:28.
from the edges of the wall. And then we realised that | :26:29. | :26:37.
downstairs was on fire. Last night, during a packed | :26:38. | :26:41.

and a different note to how we ended 2016. Things are turning colder, | :30:13. | :30:17.
clearer in the north, here is the sunset captured in Chester earlier | :30:18. | :30:21.
on in the day. Clear skies there, clear skies by date certainly mean | :30:22. | :30:25.
we are in for a cold night. Through New Year's Day, the front has sun | :30:26. | :30:29.
its way south, still holding on across Southern counties at the | :30:30. | :30:33.
moment. Cloud and outbreaks of drizzly rain across the far south of | :30:34. | :30:37.
England. Elsewhere, clear skies and colder conditions shifting further | :30:38. | :30:41.
south. Still some wintry showers across the north-east of England and | :30:42. | :30:44.
Northern and eastern Scotland where there could be some slippery and icy | :30:45. | :30:47.
conditions on Monday morning. Wherever you are, it will be a cold | :30:48. | :30:52.
start the day. We are likely to see fairly widespread frost across | :30:53. | :30:55.
Northern Ireland, northern England and Wales. Not quite as could | :30:56. | :30:59.
further south but decent start to the day. Plenty of wintry sunshine | :31:00. | :31:03.
on offer. We shouldn't see many problems with mist and fog. Clearer | :31:04. | :31:10.
conditions, better visibility, a few wintry showers in the far south-east | :31:11. | :31:14.
thing when. Mostly dry through much of northern England, up towards the | :31:15. | :31:20.
northern half of Scotland we will continue to seek sleet and snow over | :31:21. | :31:24.
the Highlands and perhaps the odd wintry showers down the east coast | :31:25. | :31:28.
of England, falling as rain around the coast and down at low levels as | :31:29. | :31:31.

dry weather. A pleasant day if you have plans to be outdoors on bank | :31:37. | :31:40.

England first thing. Through the day, things turning wild through the | :31:58. | :32:01.
north-west. Increasing amounts of cloud bringing light rain and | :32:02. | :32:04.
drizzle in northern and western areas. Southern and eastern parts of | :32:05. | :32:10.
the country pending the state right. -- tending to stay dry with a bit of | :32:11. | :32:15.
drizzle. Relatively settled on into the middle part of the week. | :32:16. | :32:19.

Good evening, and welcome to BBC News. | :36:10. | :36:31.
Police in Turkey are hunting for a gunman who opened fire | :36:32. | :36:34.
at a nightclub packed with New Year revellers, killing | :36:35. | :36:36.
Another 69 people were wounded - four of them critically - | :36:37. | :36:41.
in what Istanbul's governor described as a terrorist attack. | :36:42. | :36:45.
Officials say some 15 foreign nationals were killed | :36:46. | :36:47.
in the shooting, at one of the city's most | :36:48. | :36:50.
The attack marks a bloody end to a year which saw Ankara | :36:51. | :36:54.
and Istanbul targeted by several attacks carried out by the so-called | :36:55. | :36:57.
Islamic State group and, separately, Kurdish rebels. | :36:58. | :36:59.

bullets ricocheting as he shot a policeman and a civilian. | :37:24. | :37:29.
Another camera showed people cowering as the attacker struck, | :37:30. | :37:32.
Inside, his killing spree continued - Turks and foreigners murdered, | :37:33. | :37:37.
others jumping into the freezing Bosporus to escape. | :37:38. | :37:41.
Dozens more were injured, some critically. | :37:42. | :37:45.
my husband suddenly told me to get on the floor. | :37:46. | :37:56.
A man ran inside, two or three people started firing, | :37:57. | :37:58.
until special forces took us out of there. | :37:59. | :38:06.
They shot randomly, there were bodies lying on the floor. | :38:07. | :38:09.
Today, the scene was heavily guarded - | :38:10. | :38:12.
too late for the victims of last night's security breach. | :38:13. | :38:15.
There's still no word of who was behind it. | :38:16. | :38:18.
to what was one of Turkey's most renowned nightclubs, | :38:19. | :38:24.
which has become a scene of mass murder. | :38:25. | :38:27.
Turkey is now worryingly accustomed to these attacks, | :38:28. | :38:30.
and, as perhaps the most turbulent year in its modern history ends, | :38:31. | :38:32.
another begins, yet again marked by terror. | :38:33. | :38:36.
At the mortuary, they counted up the bodies. | :38:37. | :38:38.
Muhammad Razzaq from Iraq told us one of his friends was killed | :38:39. | :38:47.
"We'd come here on holiday," he said. | :38:48. | :38:55.
"Now we are taking our friend's body home." | :38:56. | :38:56.
Visiting the wounded, the Prime Minister sounded defiant, | :38:57. | :38:58.
but after more than 20 attacks in the past year, | :38:59. | :39:01.
killing almost 400, many will see his words as empty. | :39:02. | :39:04.

Kurdish militants have bombed soldiers and police | :39:24. | :39:30.
in a worsening insurgency, recently targeting a football | :39:31. | :39:32.
And, as Turkish forces became more embroiled | :39:33. | :39:35.
in Syria, so-called Islamic State have hit back, attacking Istanbul | :39:36. | :39:37.
Since Turkey launched a ground offensive against | :39:38. | :39:41.
IS and Kurdish militias in Syria, it's more vulnerable than ever. | :39:42. | :39:45.

in Sandringham this morning, because of a lingering heavy cold. | :40:28. | :40:30.
She was also absent from the Christmas Day service | :40:31. | :40:32.
at her Norfolk estate because she was unwell. | :40:33. | :40:34.
Buckingham Palace says the Queen has been up and about in recent days, | :40:35. | :40:37.
but is still recuperating, as our royal correspondent, | :40:38. | :40:39.
For a second time during the holiday season, the Royals headed to church. | :40:40. | :40:45.
For a second time, the Queen was a notable absentee. | :40:46. | :40:47.
Her 95-year-old husband, who's also been ill, | :40:48. | :40:49.
did attend and was described by one observer as "chipper". | :40:50. | :40:51.
Protected from rain and walking alongside her husband, Anne, | :40:52. | :40:53.
a princess in purple, told someone in the crowd her mother | :40:54. | :40:56.
During these security-conscious times, the Windsors over Christmas | :40:57. | :41:06.
are an attraction for the dedicated, who, despite the weather, gather | :41:07. | :41:08.
Once again, the 90-year-old monarch wasn't on display. | :41:09. | :41:12.
A little bit disappointed, because the Queen wasn't there, | :41:13. | :41:14.
but that is understandable at 90 years of age. | :41:15. | :41:16.
She's in the best place, yes, and I wish her | :41:17. | :41:18.
Obviously, if she's not well, then you don't want to see her come | :41:19. | :41:23.
out in this weather, do you, you know? | :41:24. | :41:26.
At Christmas, our attention is drawn to the birth of a baby | :41:27. | :41:29.
The Queen, who recorded her Christmas Day message early | :41:30. | :41:32.
in December, will not have taken the decision to miss church lightly | :41:33. | :41:35.
- the Supreme Governor of the Church of England has | :41:36. | :41:37.
But in her tenth decade, and on the advice of her doctor, | :41:38. | :41:42.
the monarch is exercising caution in the face of a heavy cold she's | :41:43. | :41:45.
The Queen has been laid low and left feeling pretty miserable at the end | :41:46. | :41:53.
of yet another significant year in her long reign. | :41:54. | :42:02.
As well as celebrating her landmark birthday, she's started | :42:03. | :42:04.
to acknowledge her advancing age and reduce her workload. | :42:05. | :42:06.
Just last month, the Queen severed her links to 25 | :42:07. | :42:08.
organisations she'd been patron of for decades. | :42:09. | :42:10.
Palace officials insist the Queen is up and about and she hasn't been | :42:11. | :42:13.
As head of state, she continues to deal with the government | :42:14. | :42:18.
The Queen is clearly doing all she can to get rid | :42:19. | :42:22.
of a lingering cold, rather than make it worse. | :42:23. | :42:24.

Five men have been arrested in Oldham after two girls | :42:35. | :42:36.
from the same family were killed in an apparent hit-and-run, | :42:37. | :42:38.
leaving one dead and the other fighting for her life in hospital. | :42:39. | :42:41.
12-year-old Helina Kotlarova was killed when crossing the road | :42:42. | :42:43.
Eye-witnesses said the girls were holding hands at the time. | :42:44. | :42:47.
Today's family gathering should have been a celebration. | :42:48. | :42:53.
The flowers laid here are for 12-year-old Helina Kotlarova, | :42:54. | :43:00.
killed in an apparent hit-and-run crash last night, a crash that also | :43:01. | :43:03.
left her 11-year-old cousin critically ill. | :43:04. | :43:07.
The girls had crossed it to buy some crisps from the local shop. | :43:08. | :43:15.
They were with a bigger group, more cousins and sisters, | :43:16. | :43:18.
but they'd already made the return journey. | :43:19. | :43:21.
The two girls held hands and stepped into the road. | :43:22. | :43:24.
She was on the floor, she had blood all over her face, | :43:25. | :43:27.
and I was touching her, I was trying to see if she's | :43:28. | :43:30.
going to breathe or something, but she couldn't breathe or nothing. | :43:31. | :43:36.
And I've seen her face, this face was all, you know, bleeding and... | :43:37. | :43:39.
This evening, Greater Manchester Police confirmed they'd arrested | :43:40. | :43:47.
five men on suspicion of dangerous driving. | :43:48. | :43:49.
All remain in custody for questioning. | :43:50. | :43:51.
For the family, no news will soften the grief. | :43:52. | :43:58.
It's just hard to believe that she's gone, because she was too | :43:59. | :44:00.
young and she still have, like, life still. | :44:01. | :44:03.
Tonight, tributes continue to be laid at the scene - | :44:04. | :44:07.
a reminder of one life cut tragically short and prayers | :44:08. | :44:09.
Syrian activists say government forces have again bombarded | :44:10. | :44:20.
a rebel-held area north-west of the capital, Damascus. | :44:21. | :44:23.
Opposition groups warned yesterday that they would abandon | :44:24. | :44:26.
the ceasefire brokered by Russia and Turkey three days ago | :44:27. | :44:29.
There have been delays in attending to emergency ambulance calls | :44:30. | :44:36.
across London after the service's computer system crashed on one | :44:37. | :44:38.
Staff in the London Ambulance control room had to log calls | :44:39. | :44:44.
using pen and paper for nearly five hours overnight. | :44:45. | :44:47.
New Year's Eve, hundreds of thousands of people pour | :44:48. | :44:57.
onto the streets of the capital, creating the busiest | :44:58. | :45:00.
night of the year for the London Ambulance Service. | :45:01. | :45:04.
Its control room keeps watch over more than 600 square miles | :45:05. | :45:07.
and 7 million people, using a sophisticated | :45:08. | :45:10.
But just after midnight, that system failed. | :45:11. | :45:16.
The computer crash meant that all call details | :45:17. | :45:18.
Call handlers couldn't see where the ambulances were. | :45:19. | :45:26.
They had to use radios to contact paramedics. | :45:27. | :45:28.
We do deal with the most critically ill and seriously ill patients | :45:29. | :45:36.
first, and we continued to do that last night. | :45:37. | :45:39.
Obviously, I'd like to apologise to any patients who did | :45:40. | :45:42.
have a slightly extended waiting time while we were dealing | :45:43. | :45:44.
The London Ambulance Service says because it has no computer record, | :45:45. | :45:53.
it doesn't know exactly how many calls it dealt with last night. | :45:54. | :45:56.
These were some of the incidents they attended, but there | :45:57. | :45:59.
If the system fails at a time when there is huge pressure | :46:00. | :46:03.
on the system, when, for example, there was a major | :46:04. | :46:05.
disaster or a terrorist attack, we're going to be in really serious | :46:06. | :46:09.
trouble, so we've really got to make sure, the London Ambulance Service | :46:10. | :46:12.
has got to make sure, that this system | :46:13. | :46:14.
Emergency call handlers here are trained to dispatch | :46:15. | :46:19.
Extra staff had already been drafted in for the New Year celebrations. | :46:20. | :46:25.
But the failure of their multi-million pound computer system | :46:26. | :46:27.
on the busiest night of the year is now the subject of | :46:28. | :46:30.
The system was restored by 5:30 this morning and is now working normally, | :46:31. | :46:39.
but it may be a while before we know how many patients didn't get | :46:40. | :46:43.
care when they needed it because ambulances couldn't get | :46:44. | :46:45.
The Government's announced that the new 12-sided ?1 coin | :46:46. | :46:55.

New designs have also been unveiled for the ?2 coin | :47:03. | :47:04.

Olivier Giroud scored a wonder goal to help Arsenal beat Crystal Palace | :47:39. | :47:46.
The Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger called it a work of art. | :47:47. | :47:52.
The French striker's flying backheel was the first in a 2-0 win that sees | :47:53. | :47:57.

the leaders Wasps after they beat Leicester 16-12 at Welford Road. | :48:16. | :48:18.
Sarrie's Owen Farrell scored all their points. | :48:19. | :48:20.
The Tigers defeat was compounded by another injury for Manu Tuilagi. | :48:21. | :48:30.
He has been ruled out of England's Six Nations training camp. | :48:31. | :48:33.
Here's our sports correspondent Katie Gornall. | :48:34. | :48:35.
How many Premierships prix teams would like it listen in to | :48:36. | :48:41.
Welford Road is Leicester's fortress. Watching was England boss, | :48:42. | :48:48.
Eddie Jones. With the Six Nations' looming, much attention was focussed | :48:49. | :48:51.
on Manu Tuilagi but the injury-prone centre made little more than a | :48:52. | :48:55.
cameo. Another comeback cut frustratingly short. In a first-half | :48:56. | :49:00.
dominated by the boot. The two sides trade pep tis, with Owen Williams | :49:01. | :49:04.
putting Leicester level, 6-6 at the break. Neither side really looked | :49:05. | :49:08.
like scoring a dry but maybe that was all part of Owen Farrell's plan, | :49:09. | :49:12.
to spring a surprise and with one turn of his foot, the stage was | :49:13. | :49:19.
clear. It was a dominant performance from the fly-half who would go on | :49:20. | :49:22.
and score all of Sarries' points. Better news for the boss. The Tigers | :49:23. | :49:28.
would try to claw back but Saracens' defence held firm for a rare win at | :49:29. | :49:31.

at a very chilly Parc y Scarlets. Stef Evans and Scott Williams both | :49:47. | :49:49.
went over as they won 15-10 to complete the double | :49:50. | :49:52.

launched Hull's year Thousands gathered on the city's | :50:29. | :50:33.
waterfront for the display - which organisers claim was bigger | :50:34. | :50:36.
than London's New Year's Eve show. Hull hopes to attract more | :50:37. | :50:39.
than 1 million extra visitors Our arts correspondent | :50:40. | :50:41.
Colin Paterson was watching Hull, celebrating its year | :50:42. | :50:44.
as City of Culture with fireworks bigger | :50:45. | :50:49.

famous musical exports. This is Made In Hull, | :50:51. | :50:56.

into that, makes London look Come on, this is Hull, this is Hull, | :51:21. | :51:27.
turn a little city like Hull, And it's been a special night | :51:28. | :51:33.
for one Hull landlady. Every weekend Linda plays singalong | :51:34. | :51:43.
classics to a pub packed One of the 2012 | :51:44. | :51:46.
organisers spotted her... Tonight, she DJed | :51:47. | :51:54.
to a crowd of 25,000. Everybody's freezing so it | :51:55. | :52:06.
takes a while to warm up, but they're from Hull | :52:07. | :52:11.
and they'll be bouncing. Amazing fun, just watching | :52:12. | :52:13.
the crowd, they are amazing. The party has well | :52:14. | :52:15.
and truly started. The trick for Hull is going to be | :52:16. | :52:18.
to keep it going all year. Hull's aim is for a million extra | :52:19. | :52:21.
people to visit in 2017. A city at the end of the road could | :52:22. | :52:26.
become a destination of choice. Colin Paterson, BBC News, | :52:27. | :52:29.
Hull, City of Culture. You can see more on all of today's | :52:30. | :52:44.
stories on the BBC News Channel. That's all from me, stay | :52:45. | :52:47.
with us on BBC One - it's time for the news | :52:48. | :52:50.
where you are. The Archbishop of Canterbury, | :52:51. | :52:50.
Justin Welby, has urged people to use 2017 to heal divisions caused | :52:51. | :53:36.
by the EU referendum. In his New Year Message, | :53:37. | :53:38.
recorded in Coventry, the leader of the Church of England | :53:39. | :53:40.
praised the efforts of refugees Our Religious Affairs Correspondent, | :53:41. | :53:43.
Martin Bashir, reports. Surrendering to the demands | :53:44. | :53:51.
of television lighting, the Archbishop of Canterbury | :53:52. | :53:53.
prepares to deliver his New Year's Justin Welby returned to Coventry, | :53:54. | :53:57.
the city where he started A city whose wartime suffering | :53:58. | :54:01.
and forgiveness, he says, The story of this city says | :54:02. | :54:06.
so much that is true about Britain at its best - | :54:07. | :54:15.
about our courage, standing up to tyranny, how we stand alongside | :54:16. | :54:18.
the suffering and defeated, how we stand for human | :54:19. | :54:20.
dignity and hope. The Archbishop visited a drop-in | :54:21. | :54:25.
centre for refugees, people he called a blessing | :54:26. | :54:28.
to our way of life. And he drew his message to a close | :54:29. | :54:34.
by focusing on an issue that has divided so many parts | :54:35. | :54:38.
of the country. The EU referendum was a tough | :54:39. | :54:41.
campaign, and it has left division. But I know that if we look | :54:42. | :54:47.
at our roots, our history and our culture in the Christian | :54:48. | :54:50.
tradition, if we reach back into what is best in this country, | :54:51. | :54:53.
we will find a path towards reconciling the differences | :54:54. | :54:56.
that have divided us. From Coventry to Canterbury, | :54:57. | :55:00.
the Archbishop believes that looking back can only help us | :55:01. | :55:05.
prepare for the future. Time for a look at the weather, | :55:06. | :55:13.
with Sarah Keith-Lucas. We're starting 2017 on a different | :55:14. | :55:17.
note to how we ended 2016. Things are turning colder, | :55:18. | :55:20.
clearer in the north as well. Here is the sunset captured | :55:21. | :55:23.
in Chester earlier on in the day. But clear skies by day | :55:24. | :55:26.
certainly mean that we are Through the course of | :55:27. | :55:30.
New Year's Day, we've had this front that has been sinking its way south, | :55:31. | :55:34.
still just about holding on across southern counties | :55:35. | :55:37.
of England at the moment. Quite a bit of cloud, | :55:38. | :55:39.
outbreaks of drizzly rain Elsewhere, clear skies, colder | :55:40. | :55:41.
conditions are shifting their way Still some wintry showers | :55:42. | :55:45.
across the north-east of England and northern and eastern Scotland, | :55:46. | :55:48.
where there could be some slippery, icy conditions come first | :55:49. | :55:52.
thing Monday morning. And wherever you are, | :55:53. | :55:54.
it will be a cold start the day. We are likely to see | :55:55. | :55:57.
a fairly widespread frost, particularly across parts | :55:58. | :55:59.
of Northern Ireland, But it is looking like | :56:00. | :56:01.
a decent start of the day. Plenty of that wintry | :56:02. | :56:06.
sunshine on offer. But we shouldn't see any | :56:07. | :56:08.
problems with mist and fog, certainly compared to what we had | :56:09. | :56:11.
during the last part of 2016. Clearer conditions, | :56:12. | :56:13.
better visibility. A few wintry showers | :56:14. | :56:15.
still across the far east of England, falling | :56:16. | :56:22.
as sleet and snow Mostly dry through much | :56:23. | :56:24.
of northern England, southern Scotland and Northern | :56:25. | :56:27.
Ireland. Up towards the northern half | :56:28. | :56:29.
of Scotland we will continue to see some sleet and snow showers over | :56:30. | :56:31.
the Highlands for instance, and perhaps the odd wintry | :56:32. | :56:33.
showers down the east coast Falling as rain though on the coast, | :56:34. | :56:36.
down at low levels as well. Elsewhere, away from the North | :56:37. | :56:40.
and the East, looking A really pleasant day if you have | :56:41. | :56:42.
got plans to be outdoors In the light winds, | :56:43. | :56:46.
temperatures only 3-6d, certainly colder than it has been, | :56:47. | :56:50.
at least you've got a return Then on into Monday night, | :56:51. | :56:52.
it's going to be a cold one. Under those clear skies, the blue | :56:53. | :56:56.
colours indicating a sharp frost. Temperatures as low as around -5 | :56:57. | :56:59.
in the countryside through central But through the day, | :57:00. | :57:01.
things will turn milder You can see the increasing amounts | :57:02. | :57:05.
of cloud building here. Bringing some light rain | :57:06. | :57:09.
and drizzle over the hills Southern and eastern parts | :57:10. | :57:11.
of the country though tending to stay dry with a bit | :57:12. | :57:15.
of sunshine around, too. Fairly breezy in the north, | :57:16. | :57:17.
and temperatures between around So relatively settled | :57:18. | :57:19.
on into the middle part of the week. Wednesday into Thursday, | :57:20. | :57:24.
temperatures colder But at least it's staying reasonably | :57:25. | :57:26.
dry, with some wintry sunshine. | :57:27. | :57:32. |
