China warns the United States not to allow tension with North Korea

:00:00.:00:07.

It says force cannot solve the problem.

:00:08.:00:13.

The blunt warning comes after the US drops its biggest non-nuclear bomb

:00:14.:00:16.

ever used in combat - killing 36 militants

:00:17.:00:19.

We have Afghan and US forces on the site and see no evidence

:00:20.:00:26.

of civilian casualties, nor have there been any reports

:00:27.:00:28.

After strikes in Syria, Afghanistan and with the threat

:00:29.:00:35.

of conflict on the Korean peninsula, we'll be asking - what is

:00:36.:00:37.

The National Union of Teachers says it's prepared to take legal action

:00:38.:00:45.

against the government, over some of its plans to expand

:00:46.:00:47.

The Sun suspends its former editor and now columnist Kelvin MacKenzie,

:00:48.:00:55.

for comments he's made about the Everton

:00:56.:00:57.

And the online booking site Airbnb improves its security,

:00:58.:01:03.

after a BBC investigation finds scammers have been burgling homes.

:01:04.:01:26.

North Korea's army has promised what it called a "merciless"

:01:27.:01:32.

response to any US provocation - reflecting growing tension

:01:33.:01:34.

about the country's nuclear and weapons programmes.

:01:35.:01:38.

China has called for calm, saying it fears conflict

:01:39.:01:40.

It comes as the United States says a huge bomb -

:01:41.:01:45.

dropped on so-called Islamic State militants in Afghanistan -

:01:46.:01:48.

was "the right weapon against the right target".

:01:49.:01:51.

The US military insists it was a local, tactical decision.

:01:52.:01:55.

Others believe its principal aim was as a show of strength.

:01:56.:01:58.

Our security correspondent Frank Gardner reports.

:01:59.:02:05.

"A powerful armada," in the words of President Trump.

:02:06.:02:07.

This is the US Navy's Carl Vinson carrier battle group,

:02:08.:02:09.

equipped with 90 strike aircraft and other weapons and diverted

:02:10.:02:13.

Mr Trump is hoping it will intimidate that country's

:02:14.:02:18.

isolated regime into abandoning any further nuclear tests

:02:19.:02:20.

China has warned of the imminent danger of a war being triggered

:02:21.:02:27.

on the Korean peninsula, and North Korea remains defiant,

:02:28.:02:31.

saying it's ready to respond to any attack with nuclear weapons.

:02:32.:02:35.

Meanwhile, in Afghanistan, the US has dropped an immense bomb,

:02:36.:02:38.

11 tonnes of high explosive dropped on an Isis tunnel complex

:02:39.:02:46.

in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan.

:02:47.:02:48.

The weapon used is called a Moab, a massive ordnance airburst,

:02:49.:02:55.

also known as the mother of all bombs.

:02:56.:03:00.

This was its first time used in combat.

:03:01.:03:03.

This was the right weapon against the right target.

:03:04.:03:06.

We will continue to work shoulder to shoulder with our Afghan comrades

:03:07.:03:09.

to eliminate this threat to the Afghan people,

:03:10.:03:16.

to the people of the entire region and indeed,

:03:17.:03:21.

Local villagers confirmed that Isis fighters had set up bases

:03:22.:03:26.

in the mountains behind them, and said the bomb

:03:27.:03:28.

But the strike was condemned by both so-called Islamic State

:03:29.:03:32.

How could the United States use Afghanistan as its ground

:03:33.:03:40.

for experiments, for testing weapons of mass destruction?

:03:41.:03:48.

President Trump's targets now include three major

:03:49.:03:51.

problem areas for the US - Afghanistan, Syria and North Korea.

:03:52.:03:56.

The massive weapon that the Pentagon has used in Afghanistan is intended

:03:57.:04:00.

to send a message to its enemies that "You're not safe underground".

:04:01.:04:05.

In Syria, the Trump administration will be hoping that last week's

:04:06.:04:08.

cruise missile strike will deter Presdent Assad from any

:04:09.:04:11.

But North Korea is the biggest gamble.

:04:12.:04:15.

Mr Trump is hoping that sending this powerful naval armada

:04:16.:04:19.

offshore will deter any further nuclear tests.

:04:20.:04:23.

The question now, though, is can he manage three global

:04:24.:04:26.

It's very possible that if these three scenarios come together,

:04:27.:04:33.

Syria, Afghanistan and North Korea, that it would overwhelm

:04:34.:04:38.

the policy-making capabilities of Mr Trump's administration,

:04:39.:04:41.

it will overwhelm the strategic planning

:04:42.:04:43.

and it would overwhelm the resource capabilities of the US military.

:04:44.:04:49.

But President Trump and his entourage now

:04:50.:04:52.

feel they're on a roll, tackling head-on the foreign policy

:04:53.:04:55.

challenges the previous administration was unable

:04:56.:04:57.

There is now the risk that ramping up the rhetoric could lead America

:04:58.:05:02.

into more conflict, or that in the absence

:05:03.:05:05.

of any swift resolutions, Mr Trump may simply turn his back

:05:06.:05:07.

and focus instead on domestic issues.

:05:08.:05:13.

We can speak to our Washington correspondent, Laura Bicker.

:05:14.:05:23.

What should we read into his strategy here? We've seen so many

:05:24.:05:30.

foreign-policy U-turns in the last week, it's hard to know where he'll

:05:31.:05:34.

turn, or what the long-term strategy really is. But here's what we know

:05:35.:05:38.

about the president so far. He is willing and able to act very quickly

:05:39.:05:43.

and flex those military muscles, unlike his predecessor. Consider

:05:44.:05:48.

that strike on Syria. He casually turned the Chinese Premier over

:05:49.:05:52.

dinner while remarking about how good the chocolate cake is, he says,

:05:53.:05:56.

I've said 59 cruise missiles into Syria. That sends a strong message,

:05:57.:06:02.

not just to China but to neighbouring North Korea. He's also

:06:03.:06:07.

delegated more responsibility to his generals the Pentagon and he is

:06:08.:06:13.

listening to them for now at least, but this is an unpredictable

:06:14.:06:15.

president with an avid Twitter habit. So everything can change in

:06:16.:06:20.

140 characters or less. And how is all of this playing at home? Well,

:06:21.:06:25.

he did promise his supporters he'd put America first, not at the centre

:06:26.:06:29.

of foreign conflict, but he also promised them so much winning and

:06:30.:06:33.

when it comes to home policy he's failed to implement health care

:06:34.:06:36.

policies, he's failed when it comes to his travel ban and the Republican

:06:37.:06:40.

party looks increasingly split. He's had a lot of positive headlines in

:06:41.:06:45.

the last week for using his military muscle. He may take that as a win

:06:46.:06:49.

for now, but how long those headlines will remain positive, if

:06:50.:06:54.

for instance he is to get involved in the conflict in North Korea,

:06:55.:06:57.

well, that remains to be seen. Laura, thank you. Pyongyang is

:06:58.:07:05.

thought to be preparing for a massive military parade tomorrow at

:07:06.:07:08.

which its latest missile technology may well be on display. Our reporter

:07:09.:07:14.

John Sudworth is with a group of foreign journalists witnessing the

:07:15.:07:17.

events. His movements are being tightly controlled.

:07:18.:07:22.

In North Korea, the spectre of war looms large over daily life.

:07:23.:07:26.

These girls are singing about being soldiers.

:07:27.:07:30.

While, not far away, real ones crowd into a shrine

:07:31.:07:35.

to the country's founding president, General Kim Il-sung.

:07:36.:07:40.

These are scenes akin to a religious pilgrimage, but of course,

:07:41.:07:46.

in honour of a still-ruling family dynasty who have at their disposal

:07:47.:07:52.

all of the myth that would rival any of the world's great religions.

:07:53.:07:59.

And as the country prepares to display its devotion

:08:00.:08:04.

at the anniversary of Kim Il-sung's birth this weekend, there's

:08:05.:08:08.

an awareness of the rising tension with America.

:08:09.:08:13.

TRANSLATION: We should have the nuclear weapons.

:08:14.:08:15.

If we do not have nuclear weapons, the nuclear weapon of another

:08:16.:08:22.

TRANSLATION: It doesn't matter whether the Americans make

:08:23.:08:30.

the situation on the Korean peninsula tense.

:08:31.:08:33.

We feel safe because we have the great leader, Kim Jong-un.

:08:34.:08:39.

This week, the current ruler, Kim Jong-un, held this

:08:40.:08:42.

meeting where his late grandfather was honoured.

:08:43.:08:46.

He is also thought to be planning a massive military parade

:08:47.:08:49.

as a powerful tribute, and a message of defiance.

:08:50.:08:54.

This is a country where art and armaments are blended

:08:55.:09:02.

in singular purpose, to demonstrate to the watching world

:09:03.:09:06.

that its nuclear ambitions will not be stopped.

:09:07.:09:13.

The National Union of Teachers says it's prepared to take legal action

:09:14.:09:31.

against the government, over plans which it believes

:09:32.:09:33.

are being used to expand selective education in England.

:09:34.:09:34.

The union has said it's identified comprehensive schools which it

:09:35.:09:39.

believes are bending the rules by introducing some selection,

:09:40.:09:44.

The move comes as ministers seek to lift the ban

:09:45.:09:50.

from the union's annual conference in Cardiff.

:09:51.:10:02.

In Altrincham, 100 years of tradition.

:10:03.:10:05.

Then, almost 20 years ago, new grammar schools were banned.

:10:06.:10:08.

Now, some comprehensives offer a grammar stream - for many,

:10:09.:10:10.

But could this also be used to get around the law?

:10:11.:10:14.

They fear ministers could encourage more of this.

:10:15.:10:18.

The schools where we'd have an issue around this is a school that's

:10:19.:10:21.

advertising a grammar stream, that is putting children

:10:22.:10:23.

through tests for it, and where we get the sense

:10:24.:10:25.

from documents and other things that children stay in that stream,

:10:26.:10:28.

that it's actually a selective system that is being introduced.

:10:29.:10:31.

That's what we would want to challenge.

:10:32.:10:34.

Is this essentially a shot across the bow of the Government,

:10:35.:10:36.

to say don't try to do this without changing the law?

:10:37.:10:39.

What we're saying to government is if you want grammar

:10:40.:10:41.

schools, you have to win it through the Parliamentary process.

:10:42.:10:44.

Do not try and go round the back way.

:10:45.:10:46.

For schools like Elton Primary in Cheshire,

:10:47.:10:51.

Bills going up mean less money per pupil, leaving school governors

:10:52.:10:56.

We're already having to consider over the next three years losing

:10:57.:11:05.

at least two teachers, merging year groups,

:11:06.:11:07.

potentially shortening the school week by one or maybe half a day.

:11:08.:11:11.

These are all things that we're having to consider.

:11:12.:11:17.

For teachers, that means fears about jobs, so a warm welcome

:11:18.:11:19.

This is the first real terms cuts in school budgets for two decades.

:11:20.:11:28.

This is the worst school funding settlement, since, to be frank,

:11:29.:11:35.

It's no surprise he gets a warm welcome at a union conference.

:11:36.:11:41.

But the issue of school budgets matters to parents too.

:11:42.:11:47.

The government is facing cross-party opposition to its plans

:11:48.:11:49.

Schools can stream pupils after they get a place.

:11:50.:11:58.

The government says that's perfectly legal.

:11:59.:12:00.

And only a change in the law could allow new selective schools.

:12:01.:12:05.

A young British woman has been stabbed to death

:12:06.:12:12.

23-year-old Hannah Bladon, an exchange student from Birmingham,

:12:13.:12:17.

was taken to hospital but died soon after.

:12:18.:12:20.

Police say two other people were also injured during the attack.

:12:21.:12:24.

A 57-year-old Palestinian who police say had recently been

:12:25.:12:28.

released from a psychiatric hospital has been arrested.

:12:29.:12:34.

Hundreds of drivers began the Bank Holiday weekend stuck

:12:35.:12:36.

on the M4 after a lorry carrying compressed gas caught fire.

:12:37.:12:38.

The motorway was closed in both directions for an hour

:12:39.:12:41.

between junctions 17 and 18 near Chippenham in Wiltshire.

:12:42.:12:43.

Drivers faced long delays and police say there are still some

:12:44.:12:46.

lane closures in place although they should be lifted

:12:47.:12:48.

The former editor of The Sun, Kelvin MacKenzie, has been

:12:49.:12:57.

suspended tonight for comments he made about the Everton footballer

:12:58.:13:00.

The article published in today's paper

:13:01.:13:04.

prompted a complaint to the police by the mayor of Liverpool.

:13:05.:13:07.

Our reporter Helena Lee is outside the offices of News UK,

:13:08.:13:10.

What's the foundation of the complaint, Helena?

:13:11.:13:18.

The article was about Ross Barkley, who was punched earlier this week in

:13:19.:13:26.

Liverpool city centre. In the piece, Kelvin MacKenzie said "The lack of

:13:27.:13:30.

reflection in his eyes has always made him think that he was one of

:13:31.:13:35.

our dimmest footballers". He said "It was like seeing a gorilla at a

:13:36.:13:41.

zoo". Ross Barkley's grandfather was born in Nigeria. The piece also went

:13:42.:13:45.

on to say that men who earned similar amounts of money to

:13:46.:13:48.

footballers in Liverpool were drug dealers. This prompted the Mayor of

:13:49.:13:52.

Liverpool to then complain to the police. Tonight, Kelvin MacKenzie

:13:53.:13:56.

has been suspended from the paper. He is away on holiday at the moment,

:13:57.:14:00.

but in a statement he said he didn't know if Ross Barkley's family

:14:01.:14:05.

background and he said it was beyond parody that his critics would

:14:06.:14:11.

describe his article as racist. Here at news UK, they say the views

:14:12.:14:14.

expressed by Kelvin MacKenzie were wrong, unfunny and not the views of

:14:15.:14:19.

the paper, but it is important to note that even though Kelvin

:14:20.:14:22.

MacKenzie wrote the article himself, there would have been an editorial

:14:23.:14:26.

process and the paper still went ahead and published his piece.
