Tonight at Ten, the final battle-lines are drawn as two

:00:00.:00:08.

candidates fight for the keys to the Elysee Palace.

:00:09.:00:12.

Macron and Le Pen will contest the final round in just under

:00:13.:00:16.

a fortnight, pushing aside the traditional mainstream parties.

:00:17.:00:25.

As Marine Le Pen promises a new start for France and a day

:00:26.:00:29.

of reckoning for the EU the nation's leaders line up to back her rival.

:00:30.:00:37.

TRANSLATION: The far right will deeply divide France. It would

stigmatise some of our fellow citizens because of some of their

they are being driven 100 kilometres from here.

:01:30.:01:33.

And, one of the enduring images of this year's London Marathon -

:01:34.:01:35.

we speak to the runners who made their own headlines.

:01:36.:02:07.

France has now entered a period of intense political campaigning

:02:08.:02:12.

between Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen the two remaining

:02:13.:02:15.

It's a race that's already transformed the old patterns

:02:16.:02:21.

of French politics with potentially significant consequences

:02:22.:02:24.

The final voting figures for the first round released today

:02:25.:02:30.

His rival Marine Le Pen of the National Front took 21.3%.

:02:31.:02:37.

The outgoing Socialist president Francois Hollande said today that

:02:38.:02:41.

only Mr Macron would defend the values of the French respublic.

:02:42.:02:48.

only Mr Macron would defend the values of the French republic.

:02:49.:02:51.

Our Europe editor Katya Adler has the latest.

:02:52.:02:57.

Emmanuel Macron looking presidential last nights. A bit prematurely

:02:58.:03:06.

perhaps. There's a lot of glad handing still to be done two weeks

:03:07.:03:13.

to go before the final vote. Financial markets in Brussels mange

:03:14.:03:18.

President Macron is a done deal. But she doesn't. Marine Le Pen, Macron's

:03:19.:03:25.

rival for president, his rival for French voters' trust. A welcome

:03:26.:03:30.

visitor on market day in the forgotten town. She's the people's

:03:31.:03:34.

president, she says, with welfare policies to match. EU to the back of

:03:35.:03:43.

the cue. Madam Le Pen wants out of the euro, she's anti-big business

:03:44.:03:49.

too. It's exactly these images that Marine Le Pen will be chasing

:03:50.:03:51.

throughout her presidential campaign. Her intended message -

:03:52.:03:56.

she's a woman of the people. While her political rival, Emmanuel

:03:57.:03:59.

Macron, is a remote Parisian elitist.

:04:00.:04:03.

Last night's election showed a divided France. Marine Le Pen did

:04:04.:04:07.

well in the north and south-east, areas with high unemployment and low

:04:08.:04:12.

wages. Emmanuel Macron dominated in wealthy areas and large cities like

:04:13.:04:19.

Paris and Bordeaux, where his probusiness, pro-EU liberal platform

:04:20.:04:23.

resonates. Emmanuel Macron was in Paris today, keen to display his

:04:24.:04:28.

statesmanlike credentials, remembering victims of mass killings

:04:29.:04:31.

in Armenia. And while his rival hugged and kissed her way through

:04:32.:04:36.

the crowds today, Mr Macron had onlookers behind cordons, only the

:04:37.:04:41.

press allowed near. Political gloves are off for both

:04:42.:04:45.

candidates, this is the fight of their professional life. They need

:04:46.:04:50.

to win voters outside their true traditional support base to make it

:04:51.:05:01.

to the top. Who can pull it off? TRANSLATION: I plan to abstain. I

:05:02.:05:06.

don't like either candidate. I will vote for Macron even if I don't want

:05:07.:05:10.

him as a President, but I want him more than Marine Le Pen. And

:05:11.:05:15.

France's political establishment, including its current President, has

:05:16.:05:17.

urged all voters, to do the same. TRANSLATION: The far right would

:05:18.:05:27.

deeply divide France. It would stigmatise some of our fellow

:05:28.:05:32.

citizens because of its origins. It would undermine the religion and

:05:33.:05:38.

republic. Aware of her party's divisive reputation, Marine Le Pen

:05:39.:05:40.

had a surprise announcement tonight. She said she was stepping aside as

:05:41.:05:47.

President of the National Front to run for president of all of France.

:05:48.:05:53.

Emmanuel Macron still has a race to win. This is an all-or-nothing

:05:54.:06:00.

campaign for both candidates and in true French style, this promises to

:06:01.:06:02.

be passionate and dramatic. Cat what, what about the rest of the

:06:03.:06:18.

European Union? There is a lot at stake. France is a political and

:06:19.:06:23.

economic heavyweight in Europe and outside as well. That's why there is

:06:24.:06:26.

so much world attention on these elections. If Emmanuel Macron is

:06:27.:06:30.

president, the international financial market love that idea,

:06:31.:06:37.

they surged this morning. He's probusiness and pro-international

:06:38.:06:39.

trade aGreen Parties and pro-EU, so Brussels is absolutely delighted. He

:06:40.:06:43.

wants more EU integration. This could make him a tricky partner in

:06:44.:06:48.

Brexit negotiations, of course, European Union for him coming above

:06:49.:06:52.

all else, but he's a former Minister of The economy and he's unlikely toe

:06:53.:06:56.

say no to a favourable trade agreement for the EU and Britain. If

:06:57.:07:01.

we look at Marine Le Pen, a very different prospect. Of course if

:07:02.:07:06.

she's president, she'd be the champion for Euro-sceptic pop list

:07:07.:07:09.

nationalist movements across Europe and beyond but Brussels is afraid of

:07:10.:07:13.

her. She wants to pull France out of the euro and hold a referendum on

:07:14.:07:17.

France's European Union membership. She's a big fan of Brexit, but if

:07:18.:07:22.

France leaves the EU, the whole European project could collapse.

:07:23.:07:27.

That would impact the UK as well at the very least leaving Brexit talks

:07:28.:07:31.

and talks of a future trade deal hanging in the air.

:07:32.:07:34.

Jeremy Corbyn has been campaigning in Scotland today where Labour held

:07:35.:07:42.

just one seat in the general election of 2015.

:07:43.:07:45.

Mr Corbyn was addressing the Scottish Trades Union Congress

:07:46.:07:48.

where he said a Labour government would repeal trade union

:07:49.:07:51.

legislation passed by David Cameron's government.

:07:52.:07:55.

He told union members that they were the DNA

:07:56.:07:57.

The same audience heard the first minister Nicola Sturgeon insist

:07:58.:08:01.

the election in Scotland was a two-horse race between the SNP

:08:02.:08:03.

Sarah Smith our Scotland editor has more details.

:08:04.:08:06.

All these Labour supporters know Jeremy Corbyn has to win back huge

:08:07.:08:12.

numbers of voters from the SNP if he's to stand a chance

:08:13.:08:15.

Do you want to vote for the SNP, who want to fight for another

:08:16.:08:24.

unwanted and unnecessary referendum but have failed abysmally

:08:25.:08:26.

in the fight against poverty and inequality?

:08:27.:08:28.

An SNP who've failed in government in all policy areas,

:08:29.:08:32.

as they systematically forget the day job, and obsess

:08:33.:08:37.

A springtime fall of snow greeted Mr Corbyn earlier today,

:08:38.:08:42.

when both he and Nicola Sturgeon came to the Scottish trade union

:08:43.:08:46.

Jeremy Corbyn says he's fighting for every seat in Scotland.

:08:47.:08:51.

The reality is, they'll have to fight hard to keep the one MP

:08:52.:08:56.

they have in Scotland at the moment, having lost 40 seats

:08:57.:08:58.

There will be no deals with Nicola Sturgeon

:08:59.:09:04.

and the SNP after the election, Mr Corbyn said today.

:09:05.:09:09.

While she claims her party provide the only effective opposition

:09:10.:09:12.

The SNP simply cannot form a government in Westminster.

:09:13.:09:15.

The only wait to get rid of the Tories that you so despise

:09:16.:09:18.

would be with a Labour government, wouldn't it?

:09:19.:09:20.

Well, look, I can read the polls as well as anybody can.

:09:21.:09:24.

And the travails of the Labour Party I think tell most people that

:09:25.:09:28.

Labour is not on course to form a government.

:09:29.:09:32.

So, people who don't want to see Theresa May

:09:33.:09:34.

with a strengthened hand, to impose more welfare cuts,

:09:35.:09:37.

to damage the economy, to do further damage to our society,

:09:38.:09:40.

The SNP regard the Tories, not Labour, as their real

:09:41.:09:44.

The fact is, it's never been more important for people across Scotland

:09:45.:09:57.

to think clearly and ask ourselves this question - how can

:09:58.:09:59.

we best protect Scotland from the hard-line Tories?

:10:00.:10:02.

The truth is, the Tories are starting to think that they can

:10:03.:10:05.

do whatever they want to Scotland and get away with it.

:10:06.:10:08.

The Scottish Tories believe they could win up to 12 seats

:10:09.:10:10.

in Scotland, and say only they can stop an independence referendum.

:10:11.:10:13.

Nicola Sturgeon is going to use all means possible,

:10:14.:10:17.

including this election, to try and further

:10:18.:10:25.

her aim for another, second independence referendum.

:10:26.:10:27.

The last time Jeremy Corbyn was in Scotland, he said a second

:10:28.:10:30.

independence referendum was absolutely fine with him.

:10:31.:10:32.

So, people across the country don't want it, and they want someone

:10:33.:10:35.

That's what me and my Conservative team will do.

:10:36.:10:38.

The SNP claim this is a two-horse race between them

:10:39.:10:40.

And in a campaign dominated by arguments over independence,

:10:41.:10:46.

Labour often struggle to get their message heard.

:10:47.:10:50.

While Jeremy Corbyn was campaigning in Scotland, he was being accused

:10:51.:10:53.

by the Conservatives of being a security risk

:10:54.:10:55.

because of his long-standing views on nuclear weapons.

:10:56.:10:57.

The day's campaigning also saw the Ukip leader Paul Nuttall giving

:10:58.:11:00.

the strongest hint yet that he may not stand in the election

:11:01.:11:04.

as the party unveiled its policy on integration which opponents said

:11:05.:11:08.

Our political editor Laura Kuenessberg reports.

:11:09.:11:14.

Putting his name to long deeply held principles or signing

:11:15.:11:17.

Sign away the Trade Union act, all right...

:11:18.:11:23.

Jeremy Corbyn ain't changing, not on nuclear weapons,

:11:24.:11:26.

despite his party's official support for Trident, nor staunch

:11:27.:11:29.

backing for trades unions around the country.

:11:30.:11:32.

You are our DNA, you are our family, we will never ever apologise

:11:33.:11:37.

for the closeness of our relationship with you.

:11:38.:11:41.

That's why one of the very first things we'll do

:11:42.:11:44.

when forming our Labour Government will be to repeal the

:11:45.:11:47.

Corbyn supporters would be aghast at anything else but the Tories

:11:48.:11:55.

believe he's out of touch with the majority.

:11:56.:11:58.

Content today to make that case, not their own, not even a sign

:11:59.:12:03.

of the Prime Minister, only her Defence

:12:04.:12:05.

He's already now said he wouldn't necessarily endorse

:12:06.:12:10.

That means Labour is a security risk to this country.

:12:11.:12:15.

The Tories believe Ukip's on the run too.

:12:16.:12:17.

Since the referendum, their main reason for being has gone.

:12:18.:12:21.

So they're arguing for a burka ban, no more Islamic schools -

:12:22.:12:25.

They call it integration, their rivals say it's Islamophobia.

:12:26.:12:31.

What we want to see is people sign up to British law,

:12:32.:12:36.

sign up to a British way of life and indeed enjoy the full fruits our

:12:37.:12:43.

The Ukip leader less keen to chat about his own future,

:12:44.:12:51.

chased by reporters for an answer on whether he will stand as an MP.

:12:52.:12:55.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Lib Dems think there's hope

:12:56.:13:00.

They believe they can gobble up votes in parts

:13:01.:13:05.

They're promising a second referendum on the final Brexit deal.

:13:06.:13:11.

We have, if you like, a coalition of chaos.

:13:12.:13:13.

All lined up backing the hardest of all Brexits,

:13:14.:13:20.

exit from the single market, cutting off all our ties with our

:13:21.:13:24.

Yet even among usually mild mannered Lib Dems,

:13:25.:13:29.

there were heckles today, as Tim Farron faced

:13:30.:13:32.

It's fair to say that I've answered the question.

:13:33.:13:38.

It's still a scramble for all the main parties

:13:39.:13:44.

to get their machines up and running.

:13:45.:13:46.

No one's campaign is yet running at full pelt but the broad thrust

:13:47.:13:50.

of having one to get you on board, their strategies, well

:13:51.:13:54.

those are crystal clear, Laura Kuenssberg, BBC News Vauxhall.

:13:55.:14:00.

Police in Greater Manchester are questioning a 21-year-old man

:14:01.:14:04.

about the murder of a former Royal Navy officer who was run

:14:05.:14:07.

over as he tried to stop his car being stolen.

:14:08.:14:09.

Mike Samwell who was 35 was found with serious injuries

:14:10.:14:12.

during the early hours of Sunday morning and died later in hospital

:14:13.:14:15.

as our correspondent Danny Savage reports.

:14:16.:14:23.

Mike Samwell, a 35-year-old former Royal Navy officer.

:14:24.:14:25.

He and his wife were asleep in their home in Chorlton

:14:26.:14:28.

in the early hours of yesterday when they were awoken by intruders.

:14:29.:14:32.

What happened in the following few moments saw Mr Samwell run over

:14:33.:14:40.

The high-powered Audi S3 was soon found abandoned a few miles away.

:14:41.:14:49.

Where Mike Samwell was fatally injured is now the scene

:14:50.:14:54.

of a murder inquiry, leaving neighbours

:14:55.:14:56.

He was very friendly, always talkative, funny...

:14:57.:15:01.

Mike Samwell was a weapons officer on a nuclear submarine.

:15:02.:15:11.

He left the Navy a few years ago and then worked as an engineer.

:15:12.:15:14.

Police initially appealed to the criminal fraternity

:15:15.:15:17.

for information, saying that this crime had crossed the line.

:15:18.:15:28.

Then this morning, they announced that a 21-year-old

:15:29.:15:30.

man had been arrested on suspicion of murder.

:15:31.:15:32.

Neighbours say they heard Mike Samwell's wife, Jessica,

:15:33.:15:34.

shouting his name and screaming for help after he was run over.

:15:35.:15:37.

She returned to the scene today, escorted by police into her own home

:15:38.:15:40.

which is now a crime scene, as investigations continue

:15:41.:15:42.

into what happened in this quiet suburban street.

:15:43.:15:52.

In Syria, the battle against so-called Islamic State

:15:53.:15:55.

is gathering pace as forces move towards the group's

:15:56.:15:57.

Territory which has been under IS control is being retaken

:15:58.:16:06.

including the northern town of Dabiq, which featured heavily

:16:07.:16:10.

in the group's propaganda as it was the town where

:16:11.:16:13.

the British-born militant known as Jihadi John carried out

:16:14.:16:15.

Our Middle East correspondent Quentin Sommerville and camerman

:16:16.:16:20.

Fred Scott have been to Dabiq and sent this report.

:16:21.:16:24.

In northern Aleppo, the so-called Islamic State

:16:25.:16:28.

The tiny village of Dabiq was a beacon, drawing in foreign

:16:29.:16:47.

Dabiq was a great symbol for the Islamic State group.

:16:48.:16:57.

It's here, the Prophet Muhammad said, that Muslims

:16:58.:16:59.

This is also the spot where Britain's Jihadi John murdered

:17:00.:17:07.

the American aid worker Peter Kassig.

:17:08.:17:10.

IS were right about one thing, though.

:17:11.:17:12.

But it's the place of their defeat, and they've now been driven more

:17:13.:17:20.

And these days, they don't make much mention of Dabiq.

:17:21.:17:24.

IS are gone, but there's another enemy for the Free Syrian Army -

:17:25.:17:34.

There's a weary truce on these front lines.

:17:35.:17:42.

Air strikes are no longer a threat, but the Islamic State's roadside

:17:43.:17:57.

bombs and booby-traps are everywhere.

:17:58.:18:00.

The FSA, they're mostly ethnic Turks in this part of Syria,

:18:01.:18:06.

try drive out IS but also to stop their blood enemies,

:18:07.:18:08.

The rebuilding of al-Bab is already under way.

:18:09.:18:12.

In Syria, it takes a lot of confidence to replace your windows.

:18:13.:18:16.

But the damage done here isn't just to buildings.

:18:17.:18:18.

It extends deeper, into Syria's ethnic fabric.

:18:19.:18:21.

Amid the ruins, this was an IS headquarters.

:18:22.:18:25.

You find reminders of the victims, the disappeared,

:18:26.:18:27.

New and rich wells of hatred are being formed.

:18:28.:18:37.

Inside these four walls, the country's hopelessness is revealed.

:18:38.:18:48.

Rare access to enemies and sometime allies locked up together.

:18:49.:18:50.

In these cells, the prisoners agreed to speak to us.

:18:51.:18:52.

Others, no more than boys, fought for the Kurds

:18:53.:18:56.

And some for President Assad, helped by Russia.

:18:57.:19:05.

TRANSLATION: Because of the joblessness in Syria,

:19:06.:19:09.

I had no salary to look after my children.

:19:10.:19:14.

Foreign interference here has only caused more destruction.

:19:15.:19:20.

Some say they came to fight for IS, others to destroy it.

:19:21.:19:31.

TRANSLATION: The different people and groups here despise each

:19:32.:19:33.

War only increase and hatred, it never lessens it.

:19:34.:19:38.

All the prisoners, IS included, have had regular contact

:19:39.:19:40.

These men will likely be exchanged in a prisoner swap.

:19:41.:19:50.

The war with IS may be approaching an end,

:19:51.:19:54.

but there will be no rest in Syria, and the people who make up this

:19:55.:19:58.

country will likely find themselves pushed even further apart.

:19:59.:20:05.

Campaigners for better air quality have accused ministers of "pure

:20:06.:20:08.

political expediency" and of "presiding over

:20:09.:20:10.

It follows a decision to delay publishing plans

:20:11.:20:17.

to tackle air pollution until after the general election.

:20:18.:20:19.

Ministers had originally been given until today

:20:20.:20:21.

to publish their proposals, following growing concern about the

:20:22.:20:23.

Our science editor, David Shukman, has the story.

:20:24.:20:32.

It begins with one small cloud. But multiply that by the millions of

:20:33.:20:42.

vehicles on the roads, and you can see how pollution builds up in our

:20:43.:20:45.

cities. There is growing evidence now of the impact on our health, and

:20:46.:20:49.

successive governments have been under pressure to clean up. This is

:20:50.:20:53.

all about a gas called nitrogen dioxide which is given off by

:20:54.:20:57.

traffic tapes it is invisible but damaging. The European Union says

:20:58.:21:00.

the airway breve should not contain more than 40 micrograms of it on

:21:01.:21:06.

average over the course of the year. Well, here are some of the most

:21:07.:21:19.

recent figures... The pollution is so bad in this town in Cornwall, the

:21:20.:21:22.

council even considered moving people away. Nottingham is building

:21:23.:21:26.

an express lane for electric vehicles, all this as the Government

:21:27.:21:31.

have been told to publish a new clean air plan today. One

:21:32.:21:36.

environmental group went to court and won. Ministers now say they will

:21:37.:21:40.

have to wait until after the election. Campaigners are not happy.

:21:41.:21:44.

We've been breaking the law on air pollution now for seven years and

:21:45.:21:47.

the government has had five months to find policies to sort it out.

:21:48.:21:51.

Now, they're leaving it to the last minute to try and get out of it.

:21:52.:21:56.

It's not acceptable. In the Commons, Labour accused the Government of

:21:57.:21:59.

using the election as an excuse for delay. Isn't it the case that the

:22:00.:22:03.

Government is doing everything it can to avoid scrutiny because it is

:22:04.:22:07.

missing its own commitments, has no strategy and wants yet again to kick

:22:08.:22:11.

this issue into the long grass? The Environment Secretary said the

:22:12.:22:15.

Government WAS ready to fact but could not do so right now because of

:22:16.:22:20.

election campaign rules. Clean air is an absolute top priority for this

:22:21.:22:24.

government. We have been working on our new proposals for the last five

:22:25.:22:28.

months and we are ready to go with our proposals. We are now seeking a

:22:29.:22:32.

very short deferral to meet the propriety rules around purdah. When

:22:33.:22:39.

it emerges, the clean air plan will have to tackle vast numbers of

:22:40.:22:43.

diesels. All than a third of all cars in Britain are diesels. The

:22:44.:22:47.

last Labour government encouraged people to buy them. One option now

:22:48.:22:52.

is a subsidy to scrap the dirtiest ones. But that's expensive. Another

:22:53.:22:57.

idea is to have taxes to deter diesel drivers from entering cities.

:22:58.:23:00.

Choices which are very difficult at any time.

:23:01.:23:04.

A brief look at some of the day's other news stories...

:23:05.:23:08.

The law firm Leigh Day and three of its solicitors have appeared

:23:09.:23:12.

before a disciplinary tribunal on misconduct charges over legal

:23:13.:23:15.

claims they brought against British troops during the Iraq war.

:23:16.:23:17.

They are accused of making allegations that soldiers murdered

:23:18.:23:19.

Two men - Arthur Collins, pictured here, and Andre Phoenix -

:23:20.:23:29.

have been remanded in custody after being charged in connection

:23:30.:23:32.

with an alleged acid attack at a London nightclub over Easter.

:23:33.:23:36.

More than 20 people were injured, with two of the victims

:23:37.:23:39.

Tougher punishments for the most serious cases of speeding have come

:23:40.:23:45.

Drivers may now be fined 1.5 times their weekly wage

:23:46.:23:50.

for the worst offences, including driving over

:23:51.:23:53.

50mph in a 30mph-zone, or 100mph on a motorway.

:23:54.:24:01.

James Mattis, the US Defence Secretary, has warned that

:24:02.:24:03.

Afghan security forces and the international troops

:24:04.:24:07.

supporting them face "a tough year" because of the threat

:24:08.:24:09.

Mr Mattis is in Kabul, where the Afghan defence minister

:24:10.:24:13.

and the army chief of staff have resigned following Friday's Taliban

:24:14.:24:16.

The assault near Mazar-e-Sharif killed more than 140 people,

:24:17.:24:23.

after militants disguised as soldiers stormed an army base.

:24:24.:24:28.

Our correspondent Justin Rowlatt has been to the camp,

:24:29.:24:30.

This is the route the Taliban attackers took.

:24:31.:24:39.

The guards waved them through, believing they were

:24:40.:24:41.

We're the first journalists invited onto the army base, the first to see

:24:42.:24:49.

A suicide bomber blew himself up in the dining hall,

:24:50.:24:58.

as hundreds of soldiers ate their lunch.

:24:59.:25:01.

Others were mown down as they left Friday prayers,

:25:02.:25:06.

the Taliban shooting fellow Muslims dead as they worshipped.

:25:07.:25:14.

Once inside here, they just opened fire, and if you look around here,

:25:15.:25:19.

you can see the walls are pocked with gunshot fire.

:25:20.:25:24.

And outside, one of the vehicles the Taliban used.

:25:25.:25:28.

There are suspicions the attackers had inside help,

:25:29.:25:30.

TRANSLATION: Investigators from Kabul have been here.

:25:31.:25:40.

They confirmed there are no indication that there has been any

:25:41.:25:42.

But just hours after our interview, he was suspended.

:25:43.:25:50.

Eight army personnel are under investigation, and today,

:25:51.:25:52.

both the Afghan Defence Minister and the Army chief

:25:53.:25:55.

There could scarcely have been a worse day

:25:56.:26:00.

for the US Defence Secretary, James Mattis, to visit the country.

:26:01.:26:05.

He met the Afghan president to discuss US strategy in Afghanistan.

:26:06.:26:11.

I'd say that we're under no illusions about the challenges

:26:12.:26:13.

2017's going to be another tough year for the valiant Afghan security

:26:14.:26:22.

forces and the international troops who have stood and will continue

:26:23.:26:25.

to stand shoulder to shoulder with Afghanistan against terrorism.

:26:26.:26:29.

But as they begin to clear up the wreckage, the Americans

:26:30.:26:33.

were still making no promises on what the Afghans really want -

:26:34.:26:37.

additional US troops to assist Afghan forces.

:26:38.:26:49.

The American astronaut Peggy Whitson has broken the record for the number

:26:50.:26:53.

of days spent in space by an American.

:26:54.:26:56.

President Trump telephoned her to congratulate her on beating

:26:57.:27:00.

Commander Whitson is also the first woman to command

:27:01.:27:04.

the International Space Station on two missions.

:27:05.:27:10.

Newcastle United have been promoted back to the Premier League

:27:11.:27:13.

at the first attempt following their

:27:14.:27:14.

United beat Preston 4-1 at St James' Park this evening to secure

:27:15.:27:18.

the second automatic promotion spot behind leaders Brighton.

:27:19.:27:21.

The season hasn't been the procession many expected

:27:22.:27:30.

at Newcastle United, but then life is rarely

:27:31.:27:32.

With regular crowds of over 50,000, this is a club that feels like it

:27:33.:27:40.

Much of this is down to Rafa Benitez, the Champions

:27:41.:27:48.

League-winning manager who chose to stay in the Championship,

:27:49.:27:50.

believing he could take them straight up.

:27:51.:27:53.

And the prize was in sight after just six minutes.

:27:54.:27:55.

Newcastle beat Preston 6-0 in October, but this time,

:27:56.:28:05.

their opponents were far more resilient.

:28:06.:28:07.

Jordan Hugill made sure it would be no walkover.

:28:08.:28:10.

At 1-1, nerves were starting to build at St James' Park.

:28:11.:28:15.

In such a cauldron, what was needed was a cool head.

:28:16.:28:18.

For Newcastle, that came from Christian Atsu,

:28:19.:28:21.

After the break, Newcastle were back on the attack.

:28:22.:28:25.

Preston were forced to take drastic action.

:28:26.:28:27.

Now down to ten men, Matt Ritchie punished them further.

:28:28.:28:29.

It was so close, they could taste it.

:28:30.:28:31.

Newcastle would score a fourth before the

:28:32.:28:33.

Often described as sleeping giants, maybe now they've found the right

:28:34.:28:41.

So, a a year after they were relegated, Newcastle are promoted at

:28:42.:28:51.

the first time of asking, something that doesn't happen all that often.

:28:52.:28:55.

It looks like with two games to go, bright and will pip them to the

:28:56.:29:00.

title. Although given the way everyone celebrated here, second

:29:01.:29:02.

placed does not seem like a bad price.

:29:03.:29:06.

The runner who provided the defining image of yesterday's marathon

:29:07.:29:08.

when he sacrificed his own race time to help another competitor

:29:09.:29:11.

says it was the perfect ending to his race.

:29:12.:29:16.

The actions of Matthew Rees in helping David Wyeth to reach

:29:17.:29:19.

the finishing line have been described as a great example

:29:20.:29:21.

Our correspondent Dan Johnson caught up with the two runners today.

:29:22.:29:30.

COMMENTATOR: David Wyeth goes down...

:29:31.:29:38.

After 26 miles, a helping hand summed up the spirit

:29:39.:29:42.

But there'll be guys who'll help him to the line -

:29:43.:29:49.

I was just trying to get to the line, and my body went.

:29:50.:29:54.

It was desperate, really - really desperate.

:29:55.:29:58.

He was saying that he was determined to finish.

:29:59.:30:04.

And I helped him up and his legs went again, so I realised that

:30:05.:30:07.

I was going to have to stay with him to make sure that he did get

:30:08.:30:11.

..to see it through to the conclusion of this 26

:30:12.:30:14.

I was like shouting in his ear, saying, "Come on, on,

:30:15.:30:20.

you can do this, it's 200 metres, we WILL finish, I'll stay with you!"

:30:21.:30:25.

Maybe I was a bit overzealous because of my support, but, er...

:30:26.:30:31.

Maybe I was a bit overzealous with my support, but, er...

:30:32.:30:33.

No, it was wonderful, it was needed, it was needed to kind of hit home.

:30:34.:30:37.

Matthew was clear in knowing, if he leaves me, there's a chance

:30:38.:30:40.

that they will just whisk me off, they won't get me along the finish.

:30:41.:30:43.

And that's just, you know, it's just so nice, he's such

:30:44.:30:46.

The killer question - roles reversed, would you have

:30:47.:30:49.

You're the first person to ask me that today,

:30:50.:30:56.

I haven't given it a moment's thought.

:30:57.:31:00.

You can see Prince William and Prince Harry looking

:31:01.:31:03.

What the general public see there is the spirit

:31:04.:31:06.

And this happens all over the place, it just happened that there

:31:07.:31:10.

were quite a few cameras trained on that, at that point in

:31:11.:31:13.

And it was even the wobbly pair of legs that officially

David's club has offered to pay Matthew's entry entry year,

David's club has offered to pay Matthew's entry year,

with first-class travel and accommodation -

recognition of a new friendship forged in a selfless

Here on BBC One, it's time for the news where you are.
