The White House clarifies President Trump's response

:00:00.:00:00.

to the Charlottesville attack, saying he does condemn

:00:07.:00:08.

A man's been charged with murder after a car was driven

:00:09.:00:18.

into anti-racism protestors, killing one woman and

:00:19.:00:20.

One day on from the violence surrounding the white

:00:21.:00:26.

nationalist rally - the governor of Virginia

:00:27.:00:27.

The political rhetoric in this country has bred bigotry and hatred.

:00:28.:00:39.

We'll be live in Washington with the latest reaction.

:00:40.:00:42.

A joint pledge from the Trade Secretary and the Chancellor -

:00:43.:00:46.

a Brexit transition period will not be a back door to staying in the EU.

:00:47.:00:52.

Painful memories of the violence that surrounded the partition

:00:53.:00:54.

of India and Pakistan - 70 years ago.

:00:55.:00:59.

And two late medals mean Britain's athletes reach their target

:01:00.:01:02.

The White House has defended President Trump's

:01:03.:01:26.

response to the violence in Charlottesville Virginia -

:01:27.:01:28.

after the biggest gathering of white nationalist groups

:01:29.:01:30.

A 20-year old man has now been charged with murder after a car

:01:31.:01:36.

was driven into a woman who was part of a demonstration against

:01:37.:01:39.

After President Trump spoke of violence 'on many sides' -

:01:40.:01:45.

a spokesman clarified today that his condemnation included white

:01:46.:01:47.

Our correspondent Laura Bicker sent this report from Charlottesville.

:01:48.:02:03.

After a violent day of division, Charlottesville has come together to

:02:04.:02:09.

pray, to show that this city condemns the hate brought here by

:02:10.:02:16.

neo-Nazis and white supremacists. The Virginia governor went from roll

:02:17.:02:21.

to roll, hugging worshippers in this Baptist Church, promising to keep

:02:22.:02:25.

policy -- Michael politics out of the pulpit but there was a message

:02:26.:02:31.

you felt he had to give. The political rhetoric in this country

:02:32.:02:41.

today has bred bigotry. Hundreds of white supremacists gathered in the

:02:42.:02:45.

city yesterday for a planned rally. Rolling broke out as far right

:02:46.:02:49.

groups including the Ku Klux Klan were challenged by civil rights

:02:50.:02:53.

activist. The police dispersed the crowd but the day would not end

:02:54.:03:01.

peacefully. A car, at speed, rammed into protesters. The crash killed

:03:02.:03:06.

32-year-old Heather Hier who had fought racism all her life. Police

:03:07.:03:11.

have charged 20-year-old James feels with second-degree murder. One of

:03:12.:03:15.

the organisers of the far right rally try to hold a press conference

:03:16.:03:22.

but he was heckled, almost. I would like to condemn any of the violence

:03:23.:03:29.

that yesterday. I disavow anything that led to folks getting hurt.

:03:30.:03:35.

Shame! Shame! As the crowd shouted him down, he tried to leave. But

:03:36.:03:41.

instead he was forced to flee. Police moved in to keep the

:03:42.:03:47.

protesters back. These people felt that bigotry has no place in the

:03:48.:03:51.

streets of Charlottesville, but this could be any town, any city across

:03:52.:03:56.

America. An example of the simmering racial tension and that has become

:03:57.:04:01.

heightened under President Trump. The President stopped short of

:04:02.:04:05.

explicitly condemning these violent scenes and some fear that having

:04:06.:04:10.

Donald Trump in the White House has emboldened white supremacists. It is

:04:11.:04:13.

important for us to call these people what they are, white

:04:14.:04:17.

supremacist. I don't understand why that is difficult. That is what they

:04:18.:04:21.

are. They are not hiding this behind the statue, they did not come here

:04:22.:04:26.

because of a statue, they came here to fulfil the promise of President

:04:27.:04:33.

Trump and take their country back. Calm has been restored for now,

:04:34.:04:36.

giving the city time to remember those who lost their lives while

:04:37.:04:39.

challenging hate and trying to keep the peace. Laura Bicker,

:04:40.:04:40.

Charlottesville. Jon Sopel our North America Editor

:04:41.:04:41.

is in Washington... What do you make of the political

:04:42.:04:51.

reaction to all of this not least from President Trump himself? It is

:04:52.:04:56.

interesting. All throughout the presidential election campaign

:04:57.:04:59.

Donald Trump as fears in his criticism of Hillary Clinton and

:05:00.:05:03.

Barack Obama for not saying the word radical Islamic terrorism after a

:05:04.:05:06.

terrorist attack in Europe or in the USA and is argument was unless you

:05:07.:05:10.

identified it you cannot solve the problem. On this he has chosen not

:05:11.:05:15.

to say those words and that has brought condemnation across the

:05:16.:05:18.

political spectrum and across the Republican party. The only voice I

:05:19.:05:22.

have heard in support of what he said was from the former head of the

:05:23.:05:27.

Ku Klux Klan. Today we have had some clarification, a banker Trump has

:05:28.:05:32.

tweeted, there should be no place in society for racism, white supremacy

:05:33.:05:35.

or neo-Nazis and the White House itself issued a statement saying of

:05:36.:05:40.

course the President meant to include white supremacist, the KKK

:05:41.:05:51.

and neo-Nazis. It is hard to avoid the conclusion that Donald Trump did

:05:52.:05:54.

not say those words when he is so good as social media himself, that

:05:55.:05:56.

he is choosing not to disavow the far right which played such a big

:05:57.:05:59.

part in his election victory. Thank you.

:06:00.:05:59.

After weeks of public divisions between members

:06:00.:06:01.

of the Cabinet over Brexit, the Chancellor Philip Hammond

:06:02.:06:03.

and the International Trade Secretary Liam Fox have made a joint

:06:04.:06:06.

pledge, saying that a transition period will not be a back door

:06:07.:06:08.

The two have previously put forward opposing views on Brexit.

:06:09.:06:12.

Here's our Political Correspondent Ben Wright.

:06:13.:06:17.

He's the Brexit-loving Trade Secretary itching to do deals,

:06:18.:06:21.

but Liam Fox, seen here in the US last month, has been

:06:22.:06:24.

in a dispute with the man in charge of the economy,

:06:25.:06:32.

Philip Hammond, over what should happen after Britain leaves

:06:33.:06:34.

Writing a joint piece in the Sunday Telegraph,

:06:35.:06:40.

they say there must not be a cliff edge break when Britain leaves

:06:41.:06:43.

They will seek a time-limited transition period with the EU -

:06:44.:06:47.

But during this period, Britain will leave the EU single

:06:48.:06:52.

market and the customs union - a win for Mr Fox.

:06:53.:06:58.

I think it is actually very encouraging because over the last

:06:59.:07:00.

three or four weeks we have seen conflicting signals sent out

:07:01.:07:04.

by various numbers of the Cabinet, and now it does look as if

:07:05.:07:07.

someone has said to Mr Fox and Mr Hammond,

:07:08.:07:09.

The customs union sets EU-wide import tariffs.

:07:10.:07:13.

The single market allows free trade and the movement of people.

:07:14.:07:19.

Ministers say the UK can leave both while still giving business

:07:20.:07:22.

confidence during our departure from the EU.

:07:23.:07:26.

It sounds worryingly to me as if the price Philip Hammond has

:07:27.:07:29.

had to pay for a transitional arrangement has been to sign up

:07:30.:07:32.

to us leaving the single market and the customs union.

:07:33.:07:34.

I think that is a dreadful mistake for the future

:07:35.:07:37.

of our economy, for jobs, and prosperity in Britain.

:07:38.:07:43.

It's in Brussels all this will have to be hammered out.

:07:44.:07:46.

The EU insists progress must be made on sorting out the terms

:07:47.:07:49.

of the divorce before the UK's future relationship

:07:50.:07:50.

And one issue the EU wants clarity on is how the border

:07:51.:07:56.

between Northern Ireland and the Republic

:07:57.:07:58.

This week the government will publish its formal

:07:59.:08:03.

position paper on the issue, expected to include

:08:04.:08:05.

plans to give Irish citizens the right to move

:08:06.:08:07.

This week, ministers will also set out their thinking on how

:08:08.:08:14.

a new customs arrangement with the EU could work,

:08:15.:08:16.

and more position papers will follow in a clear effort

:08:17.:08:18.

to scotch criticism that ministers are divided

:08:19.:08:20.

It is also intended to put pressure on Brussels

:08:21.:08:28.

to crack on with talking about Britain's future

:08:29.:08:31.

relationship with the EU sooner rather than later.

:08:32.:08:33.

Kenya's defeated opposition leader, Raila Odinga,

:08:34.:08:39.

has urged his supporters to boycott work tomorrow following

:08:40.:08:41.

the disputed results of the presidential election.

:08:42.:08:43.

Mr Odinga made his first appearance in public since the ballot

:08:44.:08:45.

are said to have been killed since the result was declared -

:08:46.:08:51.

international observers have described the poll as free and fair.

:08:52.:09:01.

Learner drivers are to be allowed onto motorways in England,

:09:02.:09:03.

Scotland and Wales for the first time next year.

:09:04.:09:05.

They'll need to be accompanied by an approved instructor

:09:06.:09:08.

The government hopes the change of rules will mean drivers will be

:09:09.:09:12.

better prepared to drive on motorways on their own,

:09:13.:09:14.

They can be daunting for young motorists.

:09:15.:09:23.

Driving at speed, surrounded by bigger vehicles.

:09:24.:09:26.

From next year, learners will get motorway lessons.

:09:27.:09:32.

Sean Curley passed his driving test six weeks ago.

:09:33.:09:35.

It took him a further two weeks to brave a motorway on his own.

:09:36.:09:43.

You're going to have to move over to the right,

:09:44.:09:48.

and there's cars going 70 miles an hour, sometimes faster,

:09:49.:09:51.

and you've not experienced anything like it.

:09:52.:09:52.

Young drivers are much more likely to crash than older motorists.

:09:53.:09:57.

1.5% of UK licence holders are under 19, but that age group is involved

:09:58.:10:01.

In general, young drivers are seven times more likely

:10:02.:10:10.

If you're a motorist like me, I'd much rather have somebody next

:10:11.:10:16.

to me on a motorway who's been taught how to drive on a motorway

:10:17.:10:19.

than somebody who's just left the test centre and driven straight

:10:20.:10:22.

down onto a motorway for the first time.

:10:23.:10:24.

I think this is something that will mean a safer

:10:25.:10:26.

There will be strict rules for learner drivers on motorways.

:10:27.:10:29.

They will have to have an approved driving instructor with them,

:10:30.:10:32.

and they must be in a dual controlled car, where the instructor

:10:33.:10:35.

Some road safety groups believe the motorway lesson

:10:36.:10:38.

should be compulsory, but only once you've

:10:39.:10:40.

There is, though, widespread support for this change to the rules.

:10:41.:10:45.

This is all about making it a controlled environment,

:10:46.:10:51.

making sure that nothing can go wrong, or if anything does go wrong,

:10:52.:10:54.

there is a fully qualified and fully trained professional next to them

:10:55.:10:57.

that can help guide them through those situations.

:10:58.:10:59.

Not the type of thing I would maybe recommend for

:11:00.:11:01.

It's additional training to make new motorists drive

:11:02.:11:16.

After the final day of the World Athletics Championships -

:11:17.:11:28.

so with news of that and all the sport -

:11:29.:11:31.

let's join Olly Foster at the London Stadium.

:11:32.:11:33.

Ten days of competition is now over here at these Championships,

:11:34.:11:37.

Great Britain won two more relay medals tonight, and they have

:11:38.:11:39.

Here's our sports correspondent, Natalie Pirks.

:11:40.:11:47.

The smiles of Britain's young relay quartet were infectious.

:11:48.:11:50.

It might not be the anthem everyone expected to hear,

:11:51.:11:53.

but on a balmy summer's evening, it sounded just perfect.

:11:54.:11:58.

The future Queen of British athletics is touted as Laura Muir.

:11:59.:12:03.

Tonight, she was in the 5,000 metre final -

:12:04.:12:06.

an unfamiliar distance for her - along with Eilish McColgan.

:12:07.:12:09.

A stunning sprint finish by Kenya's Hellen Obiri

:12:10.:12:12.

Well, that was always going to be a big ask for Laura and Eilish,

:12:13.:12:31.

but there are more medal opportunities for Britain tonight.

:12:32.:12:33.

Could they be about to hit a target that before yesterday had looked

:12:34.:12:37.

Britain took Olympic bronze in the 4x400 metres

:12:38.:12:40.

The USA, though, would take some beating here.

:12:41.:12:43.

But when Jamaica's injury curse struck yet again...

:12:44.:12:45.

COMMENTATOR: And Jamaica have pulled up.

:12:46.:12:47.

The USA won by a country mile, but Emily Diamond brought it home.

:12:48.:12:56.

And, hanging on for silver, Emily Diamond takes it.

:12:57.:12:58.

It was Britain's seventh successive world medal in the event,

:12:59.:13:00.

One more medal was all it would take to ensure that Britain

:13:01.:13:05.

The men's 4x400 relay was the final event of the championships.

:13:06.:13:16.

"R-o-o-o-ney" goes up the cry from the crowd!

:13:17.:13:18.

Martyn Rooney ensured the bronze would be theirs.

:13:19.:13:20.

In the end, though, it doesn't matter how it comes.

:13:21.:13:25.

Natalie Pirks, BBC News, at the London Stadium.

:13:26.:13:42.

With record ticket sales, these championships have been

:13:43.:13:44.

hailed a huge success, and will help repair athletics'

:13:45.:13:46.

image after a series of doping scandals.

:13:47.:13:47.

But the sport also moves on without two of its greatest stars.

:13:48.:13:50.

He may not have been competing, but this evening, Usain Bolt

:13:51.:13:56.

The legendary sprinter afforded a lap of honour,

:13:57.:13:59.

as athletics said goodbye to its greatest star.

:14:00.:14:01.

Last night, however, the Jamaican had been upstaged

:14:02.:14:03.

by a remarkable performance from the British men's

:14:04.:14:05.

A victory that is still not sinking in.

:14:06.:14:20.

We've all dreamt of this, since we came to the sport

:14:21.:14:22.

we want to be the best at and we are and it's just very

:14:23.:14:25.

surreal and I just have to pinch myself that this is the reality

:14:26.:14:29.

Watching on, the women's sprint relay team whose silver also helped

:14:30.:14:32.

transform the hosts' Championships after days of near misses.

:14:33.:14:34.

The head of British Athletics says the sport has new-found belief.

:14:35.:14:37.

The real issue is have we got the underlying talent to take

:14:38.:14:40.

us into the next age of British athletics?

:14:41.:14:42.

I think what people have seen this week is we absolutely have.

:14:43.:14:47.

Mo Farah has provided many enduring images.

:14:48.:14:50.

This morning no exception, despite a silver in his

:14:51.:14:52.

His links with coach Alberto Salazar, who is under

:14:53.:14:58.

investigation by US anti-doping authorities, means Farah's legacy

:14:59.:14:59.

is not without controversy and today he reacted angrily

:15:00.:15:02.

If I have crossed the line or Alberto has crossed the line

:15:03.:15:08.

and something is done, then why can't it be done?

:15:09.:15:11.

Why do we keep bringing year after year in the headlines?

:15:12.:15:13.

I achieved what I have achieved and then you try to destroy it.

:15:14.:15:19.

Controversy was never far away at these championships.

:15:20.:15:21.

With athletics trying to recover from a doping scandal,

:15:22.:15:24.

superstar Usain Bolt was beaten in his farewell 100 metres

:15:25.:15:27.

An outbreak of illness at the team hotel saw sprinter Isaac Kuala then

:15:28.:15:32.

dramatically prevented from racing before being allowed to compete

:15:33.:15:34.

via an individual time trial, but the saddest sight was that

:15:35.:15:37.

of the legendary Bolt in his final appearance, the relay,

:15:38.:15:40.

denied cruelly once again, this time through injury.

:15:41.:15:48.

I remember after losing the 100 metres someone said

:15:49.:15:51.

to me, don't worry, Muhammad Ali lost his last fight

:15:52.:15:53.

also, so don't be stressed about that, and for me

:15:54.:15:55.

This has looked and felt like London 2012 and as with the Olympics

:15:56.:16:06.

here five years ago, there have been sell-out crowds,

:16:07.:16:08.

proof once again that when it comes to major sports events British

:16:09.:16:11.

enthusiasm remains undimmed and at a time when athletics

:16:12.:16:13.

is facing a challenge to remain as relevant as it once was,

:16:14.:16:16.

London has come to the rescue of the sport.

:16:17.:16:23.

The sport has got to be on its bended knees saying thank

:16:24.:16:25.

you, you have done something no other city could have done.

:16:26.:16:30.

As athletics tries to look forward, London 2017

:16:31.:16:32.

marks the end of an era, the changing of the guard,

:16:33.:16:34.

the championships that refused to follow the script.

:16:35.:16:36.

The world Championships are over here; in Ireland,

:16:37.:16:45.

the Women's Rugby World Cup continues.

:16:46.:16:47.

The hosts came from 14-nil down to beat Japan 24-14 so they can

:16:48.:16:50.

Wales can't, after losing to Canada ...

:16:51.:16:53.

And defending champions England had another 10-try victory,

:16:54.:16:57.

They top their pool with one round of games to go before

:16:58.:17:03.

the semi-finals which will be held in Belfast.

:17:04.:17:07.

That's just about all from here, the BBC Sport website has highlights

:17:08.:17:10.

of these championships and plenty of other sports news today including

:17:11.:17:13.

2 results from the Premier League, back to you Mishal.

:17:14.:17:24.

This week - India and Pakistan mark 70 years

:17:25.:17:27.

of independence from Britain - a moment of freedom that came

:17:28.:17:29.

amid one of the largest mass migrations the world has ever seen.

:17:30.:17:35.

The Muslim-majority state of Pakistan was created to both

:17:36.:17:37.

the west and the east of India, with Muslims travelling in one

:17:38.:17:40.

direction, Hindus and Sikhs in the other.

:17:41.:17:44.

Around 12 million people are thought to fled the violence that

:17:45.:17:47.

erupted, with communities targeting each other.

:17:48.:17:50.

A million people are thought to have died .

:17:51.:17:52.

Many South Asians who came to Britain in the years

:17:53.:17:56.

after independence were from places affected by the partition.

:17:57.:17:58.

Seven decades on - they've been telling

:17:59.:18:00.

ARCHIVE FOOTAGE: And all the time, the bloodshed goes on.

:18:01.:18:07.

As the new dominions of Pakistan and India take

:18:08.:18:09.

When British India was divided along religious lines,

:18:10.:18:13.

people who'd lived side by side for centuries soon found themselves

:18:14.:18:16.

They fled in their millions across the new borders.

:18:17.:18:24.

Throughout this vast land, Hindus and Muslims seek safety

:18:25.:18:27.

70 years ago, his family fled Pakistan for India.

:18:28.:18:35.

He left his home and his first love, Yasmine.

:18:36.:18:40.

I used to tell her like, putting my hands like this

:18:41.:18:50.

against the moon, "One day I'll give you this moon."

:18:51.:18:58.

That parting of each other was most, I would say, unbearable.

:18:59.:19:08.

She was crying, I was crying, and we hold the hand

:19:09.:19:11.

And slowly, slowly, slowly, we left each other.

:19:12.:19:21.

I could see that she is looking at me, til that end.

:19:22.:19:30.

One day we were quite happy, and in the evening, we were made

:19:31.:19:33.

Harchet Bains was 11 years old and living

:19:34.:19:39.

His family no longer felt safe in Muslim-majority Pakistani,

:19:40.:19:45.

and travelled by foot in a line to India.

:19:46.:19:52.

It became bigger and bigger as we walked along, because other

:19:53.:19:57.

I remember the Army men telling us, be close together.

:19:58.:20:07.

People are killing other people, so be very, very vigilant.

:20:08.:20:14.

Fleeing from their looted, bloodstained towns comes

:20:15.:20:16.

a new exodus, a million displaced persons...

:20:17.:20:21.

Moving in the other direction was Khurshid Sultana,

:20:22.:20:23.

She was from Delhi, where Muslims like her were being targeted.

:20:24.:20:29.
