We're in Manchester, where the the worst terror attack | :00:25. | :00:29.
Britain has seen in 12 years took place last night | :00:30. | :00:32.
at the end of a pop concert at the Manchester Arena. | :00:33. | :00:35.
22 people are known to have died and 59 people were injured, | :00:36. | :00:38.
some of them very seriously, when a suicide bomber | :00:39. | :00:43.
detonated a device as people were leaving the concert. | :00:44. | :00:47.
Many of those who'd come to see Ariana Grande in concert | :00:48. | :00:50.
Among those who were killed was an eight year-old girl, | :00:51. | :00:53.
Saffie Rose Roussos, from Leyland in Lancashire. | :00:54. | :00:56.
Also killed was Georgina Callander, an 18-year-old student | :00:57. | :00:59.
59 people have been injured and they are currently being treated | :01:00. | :01:06.
in a number of hospitals across the city. | :01:07. | :01:11.
Officers from Greater Manchester Police were called to the arena | :01:12. | :01:14.
The explosion happened in the arena's foyer | :01:15. | :01:21.
as people began streaming through the doors | :01:22. | :01:23.
Police said the male attacker, who died in the blast, detonated | :01:24. | :01:33.
Officers have carried out a number of armed raids | :01:34. | :01:39.
and a 23-year-old man has been arrested. | :01:40. | :01:40.
Our first report this evening comes from Richard Galpin. | :01:41. | :01:51.
talk to the Bishop of Manchester in the coming 30 minutes. | :01:52. | :01:57.
This report contains scenes you might find distressing. | :01:58. | :02:02.
Oh, my God. What's going on? What had been a night of joy and elation | :02:03. | :02:13.
for thousands of teenagers... Oh, my God! Turns absolute panic. | :02:14. | :02:18.
Everyone's heard what they think is a bomb going off. And the only thing | :02:19. | :02:25.
now is to get out of this arena as fast as possible. It was shocking. | :02:26. | :02:32.
Just heard this massive bang and then everyone started running | :02:33. | :02:36.
towards us screaming and crying. Everyone trampled all over us to get | :02:37. | :02:40.
out. I have seen parents with kids running out with blood all over | :02:41. | :02:44.
them. I picked this lady who said she was looking for the grandkids. | :02:45. | :02:48.
She couldn't find them. We picked up a young girl of the floor was | :02:49. | :02:52.
covered in blood with her parents next to them. It was bizarre. There | :02:53. | :03:01.
is glass and there are nuts, metal nuts that have been packed in the | :03:02. | :03:04.
device that has exploded. I can't think of anything else that's got | :03:05. | :03:14.
nuts that would be flying around. Which way? Traumatised and uncertain | :03:15. | :03:20.
what to do, many of the youngsters just keep running. Some searching | :03:21. | :03:25.
for their parents have been waiting to pick them up at the end of the | :03:26. | :03:29.
concert. Others looking for relatives and friends who have gone | :03:30. | :03:34.
missing. And today, some families are still trying to find their | :03:35. | :03:40.
children, having heard nothing from them since last night's concert. | :03:41. | :03:45.
There are children amongst the many casualties. All the major hospitals | :03:46. | :03:50.
in Manchester being used last night to receive the injured and the dead. | :03:51. | :03:56.
The police have confirmed that it was a terrorist attack, apparently | :03:57. | :03:59.
being carried out by a suicide bomber. This has been the most | :04:00. | :04:05.
horrific incident we have ever faced here in Greater Manchester, and one | :04:06. | :04:09.
that we all hoped we would never see. Families and many young people | :04:10. | :04:13.
were out to enjoy a concert at the Manchester Arena and have sadly lost | :04:14. | :04:18.
their lives. We believe at this stage, the attack last night was | :04:19. | :04:22.
conducted by one man. The priority is to establish whether he was | :04:23. | :04:27.
acting alone or as part of a network. The attacker, I can | :04:28. | :04:32.
confirm, died at the arena. We believe the attacker was carrying an | :04:33. | :04:37.
improvised explosive device which he detonated, causing this atrocity. | :04:38. | :04:42.
The police investigation has moved quickly to date, with raids in South | :04:43. | :04:47.
Manchester including one where a controlled explosion was carried | :04:48. | :04:52.
out. And earlier, a 23-year-old man was arrested in the city in | :04:53. | :04:58.
connection with the attack. In Downing Street, flags are flying at | :04:59. | :05:02.
half-mast in the aftermath of the worst terrorist attack in Britain | :05:03. | :05:07.
since the suicide bombings on London transport 12 years ago. All acts of | :05:08. | :05:13.
terrorism are cowardly attacks on innocent people. But this attack | :05:14. | :05:17.
stands out for its appalling, sickening cowardice, deliberately | :05:18. | :05:22.
targeting innocent, defenceless children and young people who should | :05:23. | :05:26.
have been enjoying one of the most memorable nights of their lives. | :05:27. | :05:32.
This afternoon, the Prime Minister travel to Manchester to meet top | :05:33. | :05:36.
police officers and visit a children's hospital where many of | :05:37. | :05:39.
the injured have been treated. I would like to thank all those | :05:40. | :05:44.
involved, the police and other emergency services, for the amazing | :05:45. | :05:47.
way they responded to this terrible incident. I've just been hearing of | :05:48. | :05:52.
police officers who were off duty turning up, wanting to ensure that | :05:53. | :05:56.
they could contribute and help. So many people have helped. That's the | :05:57. | :06:01.
great spirit of Manchester, the spirit of Britain. I am clear that | :06:02. | :06:06.
the terrorists will not prevail. I had of a garden party at Buckingham | :06:07. | :06:10.
Palace, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh observed a minute's | :06:11. | :06:17.
silence. Earlier in a statement, she said the whole nation had been | :06:18. | :06:20.
shocked by the death and injury so many people. But the horror of what | :06:21. | :06:27.
happened at the arena last night led to many ordinary people offering to | :06:28. | :06:31.
help. Taxi drivers providing free lifts for those who couldn't get | :06:32. | :06:37.
back home, others offering rooms for anyone needing somewhere to sleep. | :06:38. | :06:41.
Meanwhile, some of the victims have now been named, including, on the | :06:42. | :06:46.
left, 18-year-old Georgina Callander, and Saffie Roussos, who | :06:47. | :06:54.
was only eight. The children at the concert would never have imagined | :06:55. | :06:58.
that they would end up like this, having to escape a terrorist attack. | :06:59. | :07:02.
But it's clear that they were deliberately targeted, and that has | :07:03. | :07:07.
provoked both shock and revulsion in this country and around the world. | :07:08. | :07:18.
With me is the mayor of Greater Manchester, newly elected, Andy | :07:19. | :07:26.
Burnham. We are thinking about everyone affected today. Yes, we | :07:27. | :07:31.
are. This is a city pretty numb right now, raw with grief. But going | :07:32. | :07:37.
about its business, and that is the Mancunian spirit. People don't give | :07:38. | :07:40.
in or back down to terror of this kind. As they did 20 years ago after | :07:41. | :07:46.
the IRA bomb, people are out again tonight and that is the true spirit | :07:47. | :07:51.
of Greater Manchester. What are the city's police force and other | :07:52. | :07:55.
agencies telling you as mayor today? What is the latest you can share | :07:56. | :08:00.
with our viewers? There is a limit to what I can say because the police | :08:01. | :08:07.
investigation is ongoing. However, I would say that this was an act of | :08:08. | :08:12.
extremism. It doesn't represent any religion. It doesn't represent any | :08:13. | :08:16.
community and it certainly doesn't represent Greater Manchester. The | :08:17. | :08:19.
spirit of Greater Manchester was those people throwing their doors | :08:20. | :08:24.
open last night at that moment of maximum panic, welcoming people in, | :08:25. | :08:27.
driving people away from danger. That is the spirit of this place. | :08:28. | :08:31.
And that was the best response to what happened. You have spoken to | :08:32. | :08:37.
lots of the city's people today. What is the message they have been | :08:38. | :08:40.
giving you? And what have you said to them? I was walking past the town | :08:41. | :08:46.
hall a moment ago and someone said, don't let them divide us, don't let | :08:47. | :08:51.
the hate come in. People feel that very strongly. Of course, we are all | :08:52. | :08:57.
grieving today. But we are strong. We will back the police 100% in | :08:58. | :09:01.
finding who was responsible for this, and we will support them. At | :09:02. | :09:07.
the same time, we won't let this act of extremism divide us one from | :09:08. | :09:11.
another. There are those who will like to make it all the | :09:12. | :09:14.
responsibility of the Muslim community. Well, I'm afraid that is | :09:15. | :09:19.
wrong. This is an extremist act and the person who did it no more | :09:20. | :09:23.
represent the Muslim community than the person who killed Jo Cox | :09:24. | :09:26.
represents the white Christian community. It's an act of extremism | :09:27. | :09:31.
and people need to remember that. He said there is a limit to what you | :09:32. | :09:35.
can say, but we were reporting earlier, based on the Prime | :09:36. | :09:39.
Minister's remarks, that police have a good idea of who they think is | :09:40. | :09:42.
responsible. Is that your understanding? They obviously have a | :09:43. | :09:48.
name, but they haven't confirmed it yet. So it would not be proper for | :09:49. | :09:54.
me to say any more. But there will be further announcements in due | :09:55. | :09:58.
course. They have been magnificent. Hundreds of police officers, | :09:59. | :10:03.
ambulance staff and firefighters were out in the city centre when the | :10:04. | :10:07.
rest of the world was probably asleep last night. They saw | :10:08. | :10:10.
unimaginable scenes in terms of sheer horror. They are an | :10:11. | :10:16.
inspiration to all of us and we thank them today. Give us a sense of | :10:17. | :10:22.
the time to support that has been extended by the city to the people | :10:23. | :10:27.
affected. All atrocities of this kind are terrible. There was another | :10:28. | :10:31.
dimension last night because there were so many young people and | :10:32. | :10:33.
children in the audience for this concert. What kind of support are | :10:34. | :10:40.
you able to offer families and everyone who has been affected? The | :10:41. | :10:44.
City Council here have been working hard today. There has been a family | :10:45. | :10:49.
contact centre set up at the Etihad Stadium. We are working with hotel | :10:50. | :10:53.
companies who are currently making rooms available for people. We are | :10:54. | :10:57.
conscious that some of the people who are trapped in the city maybe | :10:58. | :11:03.
don't live here, so they have some expenses. So we are doing our best | :11:04. | :11:06.
to help people through these difficult times. We will raise a | :11:07. | :11:10.
fund to support people. We will do everything we can. You made the | :11:11. | :11:16.
point very clearly about Manchester today, people making a big effort to | :11:17. | :11:21.
go around and try to lead as normal a life as is possible in these | :11:22. | :11:25.
circumstances. What can you tell us about the ongoing security operation | :11:26. | :11:30.
in the city and what is your message to the people of the city today in | :11:31. | :11:35.
terms of the operation going on to make sure things are as safe as they | :11:36. | :11:41.
can be? I know, because I have seen it for myself, people have worked | :11:42. | :11:47.
flat out over the last 24 hours to return the city to a form of | :11:48. | :11:52.
normality to make it safe. They couldn't have done more. Already, | :11:53. | :12:00.
there are major developments here that make sure that if there was | :12:01. | :12:03.
more than one individual responsible, we will find them. | :12:04. | :12:09.
People should be reassured that the emergency services and the police | :12:10. | :12:13.
have done everything possible. We have had excellent support today | :12:14. | :12:16.
from the Prime Minister, from the government. I would say to people to | :12:17. | :12:23.
have a look at Albert Square in front of the town hall as all walks | :12:24. | :12:27.
of life come together. That is the true face of Greater Manchester and | :12:28. | :12:31.
that spirit will not be beaten by what happened last night. Thank you | :12:32. | :12:37.
so much for talking to us today. I know the vigil is happening soon | :12:38. | :12:42.
just beyond the town hall, which is behind us. Good of you to join us. | :12:43. | :12:48.
It's a pleasure. Well, not a pleasure, it is a difficult day, but | :12:49. | :12:52.
it's important to be here to thank people. We have had messages of | :12:53. | :12:57.
support from all over the country. I have been inundated with messages | :12:58. | :13:00.
from mayors in other cities around the world. The solidarity means a | :13:01. | :13:04.
great deal to us. Thank you to everybody who has made contact. That | :13:05. | :13:09.
was the mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham. We are in the heart of | :13:10. | :13:13.
the city. Manchester Town Hall is just behind me. The arena where the | :13:14. | :13:18.
concert took place last night is a short distance away and it is | :13:19. | :13:21.
surrounded by an extensive security cordon. Let's join my colleague Ben | :13:22. | :13:29.
Brown, who is there with the latest. We are just at the edge of that | :13:30. | :13:33.
cordon, and there is the Manchester Arena. Very quiet tonight, bathed in | :13:34. | :13:39.
evening sunshine. You can just perhaps see the steps leading out | :13:40. | :13:42.
the arena. That is where there were scenes of panic last night after | :13:43. | :13:49.
that bomb went off. The suicide bomber detonated his device and | :13:50. | :13:51.
people than for their lives. There were a lot of young people, not only | :13:52. | :13:55.
students and teenagers, but some of them were primary school age as | :13:56. | :13:58.
well. They had been dropped there by their families and after they ran, | :13:59. | :14:03.
many were put up in hotels overnight. They were effectively | :14:04. | :14:07.
separated from their friends and family and were looked after by | :14:08. | :14:13.
hotel staff. All through the day, we have been hearing eyewitness | :14:14. | :14:16.
accounts of what happened in there at 10:30pm last night as the concert | :14:17. | :14:19.
had ended. The explosion went off. People have been telling us they saw | :14:20. | :14:24.
nuts and bolts flying through the air. A huge flash, a thunderous | :14:25. | :14:28.
explosion and these pieces of shrapnel that were clearly designed | :14:29. | :14:32.
to cause maximum damage to the people who were there. 22 people | :14:33. | :14:39.
killed, 59 injured. Some of the injured were treated at Manchester | :14:40. | :14:41.
Victoria Railway Station, just adjoining the arena. Railway staff | :14:42. | :14:47.
trained in first aid gave triage and rudimentary for stage -- first aid | :14:48. | :14:53.
to the casualties. They saw terrible things before those casualties were | :14:54. | :14:58.
then taken to eight hospitals around the city. The 59 injured were | :14:59. | :15:01.
treated in those hospitals and some have life-threatening injuries. Ben | :15:02. | :15:16.
Brown, thanks very much. I mentioned that we are at the sight of | :15:17. | :15:19.
Manchester Town Hall. This was the scene a short while ago. The Prime | :15:20. | :15:24.
Minister visited Manchester Town Hall earlier to sign the book of | :15:25. | :15:27.
condolence that has been established. She came to Manchester, | :15:28. | :15:39.
having chaired the meeting of the Cabinet emergency committee Cobra in | :15:40. | :15:43.
Downing Street this morning before making her way to Manchester, where | :15:44. | :15:47.
she met police leaders and leaders of the emergency services, wanted to | :15:48. | :15:52.
thank them. She then made her way to the town hall in Manchester to sign | :15:53. | :16:00.
the book of condolence. I mentioned the vigil which is taking place at | :16:01. | :16:03.
six o'clock. The mayor was talking about that, a vigil being held to | :16:04. | :16:10.
show respect and solidarity. It is due to start in 45 minutes in the | :16:11. | :16:15.
city's Albert Square. My colleague Danny Savidge is there to do tell us | :16:16. | :16:19.
how the preparations for that are coming along. We are still 45 | :16:20. | :16:25.
minutes away from this vigil beginning outside the city town | :16:26. | :16:29.
hall. It is already filling up with lots of people. There are lots of | :16:30. | :16:41.
people with posters with "I love Manchester" written on them. Lots of | :16:42. | :16:47.
people are in shock about what happened last month. Let's talk to | :16:48. | :16:51.
Katrina. She is 16 and was at the concert last night. She is a super | :16:52. | :16:55.
fan when it comes to Ariana Grande. Where were you and what happened? It | :16:56. | :17:02.
was the end of the concept and I was on the third row down from the | :17:03. | :17:07.
stage. As soon as the lights came up after the concert, there was like a | :17:08. | :17:13.
bomb sound. Let me interrupt you as we go to Greater Manchester Police. | :17:14. | :17:15.
The Chief Constable is speaking. I am Ian Hopkins, the Chief | :17:16. | :17:22.
Constable of Greater Manchester Police and I would like to give you | :17:23. | :17:26.
an operational update in relation to the ongoing incident in Manchester. | :17:27. | :17:29.
Let me start by once again expressing my sincere condolences to | :17:30. | :17:33.
the families of those that have lost their loved ones in this atrocity. | :17:34. | :17:40.
We now have a team of specifically trained family liaison officers | :17:41. | :17:42.
working with those families and supporting them. There has been much | :17:43. | :17:47.
regulation in the media and on social media as to the names of some | :17:48. | :17:51.
of the victims. Whilst I accept that some of this is an inevitability, I | :17:52. | :17:55.
would ask that people allow us to work with the coroner and to work | :17:56. | :18:00.
with those families and ensure that they are properly supported before | :18:01. | :18:03.
we release the names of those that have sadly lost their lives. As you | :18:04. | :18:09.
would expect, the police response across Greater Manchester has been | :18:10. | :18:12.
significant today as we help people to continue to go about their daily | :18:13. | :18:19.
business and lead their lives. Part of this response has seen us arrest | :18:20. | :18:22.
a 23-year-old man in connection with the attack. We have also carried out | :18:23. | :18:33.
two warrants. One in Fallowfield saw us undertake a controlled explosion | :18:34. | :18:37.
gain entry. I wish to reassure those communities that that was something | :18:38. | :18:40.
we were doing to gain safe access, it is nothing to be concerned about. | :18:41. | :18:45.
We understand that feelings are very raw right now and that people are | :18:46. | :18:51.
bound to be looking for answers. However, more than ever, it is vital | :18:52. | :18:55.
that our diverse communities that make Greater Manchester such a | :18:56. | :18:59.
strong place stand together and support each other, as we will be | :19:00. | :19:07.
doing in the vigil at six p.m.. We will therefore not tolerate hate | :19:08. | :19:12.
towards any parts of our community and should communities be suffering | :19:13. | :19:15.
from hate incidents or crime, I would urge them to report it to us. | :19:16. | :19:21.
This afternoon, we were visited by the Home Secretary Amber Rudd and | :19:22. | :19:28.
the Prime Minister Theresa May, both of whom were given a briefing about | :19:29. | :19:34.
our operations and the investigation over today and the next few days. I | :19:35. | :19:38.
can confirm that the man suspected of carrying out last night's | :19:39. | :19:45.
atrocity is a 22-year-old. He has not yet been formally named by the | :19:46. | :19:49.
coroner and I would not wish to therefore comment any further about | :19:50. | :19:54.
him at this stage. Our priority, along with the police | :19:55. | :19:58.
counterterrorist network and our security partners, is to continue to | :19:59. | :20:03.
establish whether he was acting alone or as part of a wider network. | :20:04. | :20:16.
Thank you very much. So, that was Ian Hopkins, the Chief Constable of | :20:17. | :20:19.
Greater Manchester Police, giving us an update on the investigation so | :20:20. | :20:24.
far and confirming what has been reported unofficially in some | :20:25. | :20:29.
quarters that they are naming the suspect as Salman Abedi, aged 22. No | :20:30. | :20:40.
more details given by the police, saying they want to make sure they | :20:41. | :20:44.
have all the context correct before saying anything else. But they are | :20:45. | :20:49.
naming the suspect as Salman Abedi. There are also confirming that they | :20:50. | :20:53.
arrested a 23-year-old man earlier today in south Manchester and they | :20:54. | :21:01.
gave details of two operations which also took place in parts of the city | :21:02. | :21:07.
including a controlled explosion in one part of the city at lunchtime | :21:08. | :21:14.
today. The Chief Constable gave a very strong message there, appealing | :21:15. | :21:20.
for people across Greater Manchester, the entire region, to | :21:21. | :21:24.
show respect and tolerance and to show understanding and support. A | :21:25. | :21:32.
very strong message underlining what he said was the special nature of | :21:33. | :21:37.
this diversity. I am pleased to say that the Bishop of Manchester joins | :21:38. | :21:39.
me now, the right Reverend David Walker. That was an important | :21:40. | :21:48.
message for the Chief Constable to deliver. It is indeed. On lesser | :21:49. | :21:52.
occasions, we have had to stand together. This is the most serious | :21:53. | :21:55.
event to happen in Manchester to happen for many a year and again, we | :21:56. | :21:59.
will stand together. I have been touched by the messages of support I | :22:00. | :22:03.
have received from Greater Manchester and further afield. We | :22:04. | :22:08.
will stand together and show that terror never wins. The mayor earlier | :22:09. | :22:15.
was also underlining the fact that this was a matter of extremism, not | :22:16. | :22:21.
a matter of any individual faith. Absolutely. We have seen time and | :22:22. | :22:26.
time again the people who commit these atrocities don't represent the | :22:27. | :22:28.
faith communities that they claim to come from. If you look at their past | :22:29. | :22:32.
lives, they have shown little of the kind of piety or good works that | :22:33. | :22:37.
those religions uphold. They are abhorrent members of what the | :22:38. | :22:43.
community and nobody needs to be tarred with their brush. What is the | :22:44. | :22:49.
church able to do today in a city like Manchester affected so deeply? | :22:50. | :22:53.
The churches have been open for prayer today across Manchester and | :22:54. | :22:57.
beyond. In that, we have been encouraging people to come and be | :22:58. | :22:59.
there with their thoughts and prayers, whatever their concerns | :23:00. | :23:04.
are. Our prayers are firstly with the victims and survivors. Bearing | :23:05. | :23:08.
in mind how Lee Janzen a lot of the audience were, we know there are | :23:09. | :23:13.
people who will bear physical and mental scars for decades -- bearing | :23:14. | :23:16.
in mind how young a lot of the audience were. We will always be | :23:17. | :23:20.
here to support those who have suffered today, long after the media | :23:21. | :23:24.
have moved on to another atrocity in another place. These people have | :23:25. | :23:34.
lives to lead and we will help them. Given your position as the Bishop of | :23:35. | :23:41.
Manchester, how would you describe the city today? It is very | :23:42. | :23:44.
resilient. First thing this morning, I was in the city. It was very | :23:45. | :23:50.
subdued. But it is a resilient city. We have seen people holding hands or | :23:51. | :23:57.
walking arm in arm more than normal, but they are still here. A few | :23:58. | :24:00.
minutes ago, I heard applause coming from below as somebody must have | :24:01. | :24:04.
said something which was recognised by the crowd. That is the spirit | :24:05. | :24:10.
that sees us through, as it did when we had a bomb 21 years ago. Good of | :24:11. | :24:17.
you to join us. You're watching BBC News and our coverage from | :24:18. | :24:29.
Manchester continues. Yes, we are outside the Manchester Arena, where | :24:30. | :24:35.
the police are now saying that a 22-year-old man, Salman Abedi, was | :24:36. | :24:38.
the suicide bomber who last night at 10:30pm after that concert, | :24:39. | :24:47.
detonated his device and killed 22 people and injured 59. So we now | :24:48. | :24:52.
have the name. That name has been circulating, but although the police | :24:53. | :24:55.
said they knew the name of the suicide bomber, they didn't want it | :24:56. | :24:58.
released. But they have just released it. The Chief Constable of | :24:59. | :25:02.
Greater Manchester, Ian Hopkins, put it out in the public domain. Let's | :25:03. | :25:07.
go to our affairs correspondent Daniel Sandford, who was listening | :25:08. | :25:11.
as Greater Manchester Police headquarters. Talk us through where | :25:12. | :25:15.
we are now in terms of what we know about the bomb and the | :25:16. | :25:20.
investigation? As you say, the name Salman Abedi has been circulating | :25:21. | :25:23.
for some time but at the request of the police, we haven't rushed to | :25:24. | :25:28.
name him because the police wanted to tie up some lines of their | :25:29. | :25:32.
investigation before the name was out there publicly. We can tell you | :25:33. | :25:36.
that Salman Abedi was born in Manchester on New Year's Eve in | :25:37. | :25:42.
1994. He seems to have at least three brothers and sisters, an elder | :25:43. | :25:45.
brother born in London and a younger brother and sister born in | :25:46. | :25:50.
Manchester. The family are believed to be Libyans originally. Neighbours | :25:51. | :25:56.
talked about them having Libyan flags flying in their house at | :25:57. | :26:00.
certain times of year. They lived at more than one address in Manchester. | :26:01. | :26:04.
So he was born here, they have lived at more than one address. So they | :26:05. | :26:10.
knew the city well. But the police believe he was the man that took an | :26:11. | :26:15.
improvised explosive device into the foyer of the Manchester Arena last | :26:16. | :26:19.
night as the concert was ending, and killed 22 other people as well as | :26:20. | :26:23.
himself, including an eight-year-old girl and several other teenagers. | :26:24. | :26:32.
Daniel, what are the implications of the fact that as you say, the | :26:33. | :26:36.
suspected suicide bomber was born in the UK and born in Manchester? In | :26:37. | :26:42.
some ways, we have become used to that. It is not the first time we | :26:43. | :26:45.
have had British suicide bombers and it is not the first time we have had | :26:46. | :26:50.
British suicide bombers who have chosen to target the UK. So there | :26:51. | :26:54.
aren't major implications. The Libyan connection is interesting, | :26:55. | :26:58.
because of course, there was a strong involvement of British | :26:59. | :27:01.
jihadis from Manchester in Libya at the time that Colonel Gaddafi was | :27:02. | :27:07.
deposed from power in Libya. So that is interesting, but critically at | :27:08. | :27:12.
the moment, what the police need to do is work out where that improvised | :27:13. | :27:16.
explosive device was made and by doing that, find out who made it. | :27:17. | :27:21.
That will tell them whether Salman Abedi was a man who sat alone, built | :27:22. | :27:26.
a device and took it to that concert last night, or was working as part | :27:27. | :27:30.
of a wider conspiracy, a group of people who were plotting this | :27:31. | :27:35.
devastating attack against young people on a night out in Manchester. | :27:36. | :27:40.
For the moment, thank you very much indeed, home affairs correspondent. | :27:41. | :27:46.
That picked up on some of those thoughts with Chris Phillips 's, | :27:47. | :27:50.
former head of national counterterrorism security office. | :27:51. | :27:58.
What we know now about the suspected suicide bomber was that he was a | :27:59. | :28:06.
22-year-old, Salman Abedi, born in 1984, 1994, New Year's Eve. -- Chris | :28:07. | :28:11.
Phillips. The key question, really, was he acting alone, was this | :28:12. | :28:14.
something he did off his own back, as a lone wolf, was it a wider | :28:15. | :28:22.
conspiracy?, what is a hunch? Most likely there are other people | :28:23. | :28:26.
involved, due to the nature of the attack methodology, the amount of | :28:27. | :28:30.
planning and preparation that must have gone in to make a bomb in the | :28:31. | :28:34.
first place but also to deal with the detonators, putting the thing | :28:35. | :28:38.
together, and then delivering it to the location that he wanted to blow | :28:39. | :28:44.
up. That takes a lot of planning, and I think most police would | :28:45. | :28:46.
probably think that some other people were at least involved, to | :28:47. | :28:53.
what depth we don't know. One of the things the police will be trying to | :28:54. | :28:57.
find out is where these explosions have come from and what type of | :28:58. | :29:03.
explosives they are. And we know from the Chief Constable, just | :29:04. | :29:07.
telling us, lots of police activity in and around Manchester, one | :29:08. | :29:11.
arrest, a couple of raids, controlled explosion to gain access. | :29:12. | :29:17.
These early hours after the atrocity was committed are very important to | :29:18. | :29:22.
police. Absolutely and let's not forget, if someone has gone to the | :29:23. | :29:28.
trouble of building a bomb, a suicide vests, there is quite a good | :29:29. | :29:34.
chance that another suicide vests may exist somewhere and if it is | :29:35. | :29:38.
home-made explosives, that is dangerous in itself, police will be | :29:39. | :29:42.
very wary about the enquiries they have to do, the tracking down of any | :29:43. | :29:48.
composite, it is those people will be very dangerous themselves. Just | :29:49. | :29:55.
to put this into context, we know the intelligence services have | :29:56. | :29:58.
foiled quite a number of plots in recent years, and they have always | :29:59. | :30:05.
said that it is inevitable, sooner or later, there will be an attack, | :30:06. | :30:10.
we had the Westminster attack, now a bomb attack in the heart of | :30:11. | :30:15.
Manchester. Due to the number of people involved in terrorism in one | :30:16. | :30:21.
form or another, it is pretty much... It was pretty much | :30:22. | :30:24.
guaranteed that at one stage, one of them was going to get through and | :30:25. | :30:28.
commit a terrorist attack. What we have seen here is a slightly more | :30:29. | :30:32.
developed plan, someone that has gone to a lot more effort to deliver | :30:33. | :30:36.
the explosives and cause such tragedy in Manchester, has really | :30:37. | :30:41.
gone out of their way to do that, not something you can do in a day or | :30:42. | :30:45.
a couple of days, this is something planned over a number of months, and | :30:46. | :30:50.
if only to make these lotions or get hold of the exposes, that is a | :30:51. | :30:55.
difficult thing to do. And it does seem that the attacker was targeting | :30:56. | :31:03.
young people specifically, knowing that star, Ariana Grande, has very | :31:04. | :31:08.
young fans, a lot of girls, teenage girls, some, just at primary school. | :31:09. | :31:13.
Completely disgusting but unfortunately it is quite normal in | :31:14. | :31:16.
the mind of these terrorists to think that young people are | :31:17. | :31:22.
attractive victims. It is hideous. What we have seen in different parts | :31:23. | :31:26.
of the world, Pakistan, where schools have been deliberately | :31:27. | :31:28.
attacked and young people killed in classrooms, to the Bataclan, not | :31:29. | :31:35.
dissimilar to this, slightly older audience, people going about their | :31:36. | :31:39.
business in crowded places are legitimate targets in the eyes of | :31:40. | :31:46.
these terrorists. Chris Phillips, former head of national | :31:47. | :31:49.
counterterrorism security office, thank you very much indeed for your | :31:50. | :31:51.
thoughts. 22 killed here at the Manchester | :31:52. | :31:59.
Arena, 59 injured, they are being treated at eight hospitals in and | :32:00. | :32:03.
around Manchester, one of those is the Manchester Royal Infirmary, we | :32:04. | :32:08.
will go straight there now, Anita McVeigh has been there all day for | :32:09. | :32:14.
us. Nine of the 59 injured are here at the Manchester Royal Infirmary, | :32:15. | :32:19.
one of eight hospitals, as you say, involved in looking after the 59 | :32:20. | :32:22.
injured as a result of last night's horrendous attack. We have seen | :32:23. | :32:28.
throughout the day and heard about the huge wave of support for the | :32:29. | :32:34.
emergency services. First of all, we have had all of the off-duty members | :32:35. | :32:41.
of the off emergency services, who have come to volunteer their help | :32:42. | :32:45.
throughout the night and into the morning and the response from the | :32:46. | :32:48.
public who have wanted to back up the doctors nurses, ambulance crews, | :32:49. | :32:51.
all those people working to deal with the injured. With me, health | :32:52. | :33:00.
editor, Hugh Pym, tell us about the response of the emergency medical | :33:01. | :33:04.
services, obviously they have a well rehearsed plan for major incidents | :33:05. | :33:09.
but the reality is something different. That's right, the Chief | :33:10. | :33:13.
Executive of North West Ambulance Service said, nothing can prepare | :33:14. | :33:18.
you for the sadness and shock of a tragedy like this and it is a very | :33:19. | :33:24.
sad day for Manchester. However, I get the sense that there is quiet | :33:25. | :33:27.
contentment that the plan they had in place was put into practice and | :33:28. | :33:35.
delivered, it worked. One source told me, they were expecting | :33:36. | :33:38.
something like this to happen, tragic as though that might seem, | :33:39. | :33:42.
they had prepared for it, so within minutes of the attack taking place, | :33:43. | :33:48.
the regional plan was put into action, it was declared a major | :33:49. | :33:52.
incident, individual hospitals then got in touch, with staff that came | :33:53. | :33:56.
in overnight, and they had all the doctors and nursing staff that they | :33:57. | :34:01.
needed and more that came into work today, and the Berlin service | :34:02. | :34:03.
calling on a total of 300 people including control room staff with | :34:04. | :34:08.
their response. There is a feeling that what was there was the best | :34:09. | :34:13.
they could have offered. -- and the Ambulance Service. I know that at | :34:14. | :34:20.
the other hospitals, is usually appreciative of the public response. | :34:21. | :34:25.
One consultant came out and said, Lee's convey to people in Manchester | :34:26. | :34:29.
how grateful we are, how touched we are, overwhelmed by the generosity, | :34:30. | :34:36.
food coming in all day including a woman in a wheelchair, an elderly | :34:37. | :34:40.
woman, bringing in bottles of water, a supermarket chain has sent in | :34:41. | :34:44.
food, a pizza delivery firm, a catering company has brought in | :34:45. | :34:48.
food, and taking it away again. And they are taking it to another site | :34:49. | :34:54.
in Manchester. They are literary overwhelmed by the generosity of | :34:55. | :34:57.
local people. They would like to thank them. Also people queueing up | :34:58. | :35:01.
to give blood, including the donor centre over there, so they have just | :35:02. | :35:06.
the supplies they needed, at one point they had to declare, they have | :35:07. | :35:10.
what they want, even with Hughes at these centres. -- even with queues. | :35:11. | :35:22.
If they have appointments over the next few days, keep to those | :35:23. | :35:25.
appointments, at giving blood, but they do not need anything over and | :35:26. | :35:31.
above, above registered donors they need anybody with the blood type O | :35:32. | :35:35.
negative, but otherwise stick to those appointments. The staff here | :35:36. | :35:39.
have been incredibly supportive and feeling very grateful for the | :35:40. | :35:44.
support from the public. As they worked tirelessly, professionally, | :35:45. | :35:48.
of course, they have two keep their emotions in check, don't they, but | :35:49. | :35:52.
you can clearly see from medical staff that they are really feeling | :35:53. | :35:57.
this as they work to help the injured and their families. | :35:58. | :36:11.
Leaders from around the world have condemned the attack. | :36:12. | :36:17.
All election campaigning has been suspended today | :36:18. | :36:19.
as a mark of respect, including the postponing | :36:20. | :36:21.
of the Scottish National Party's manifesto, which was due to be | :36:22. | :36:23.
Our Diplomatic Correspondent James Landale reports. | :36:24. | :36:30.
VOICEOVER: Paris and Saint Petersburg, Brussels and Berlin, | :36:31. | :36:39.
London and now Manchester. The threat of terrorism is one which few | :36:40. | :36:42.
nations can avoid and many must face. | :36:43. | :36:44.
Today it was their turn to show solidarity with the people of | :36:45. | :36:49.
Britain. On the latest leg of his tour of the Middle East, President | :36:50. | :36:55.
Trump said something he called the wicked ideology behind terrorism had | :36:56. | :36:58.
to be completely obliterated. So many young beautiful innocent people | :36:59. | :37:04.
living and enjoying their lives, murdered by evil losers in life. I | :37:05. | :37:13.
won't call them monsters, because they would like that term, they | :37:14. | :37:21.
would think that's a great name. I will call them from now on losers! | :37:22. | :37:29.
Because that is what they are, they are losers! The President's | :37:30. | :37:36.
spokesman said he had telephoned Theresa May to express condolences, | :37:37. | :37:39.
the first of many world leaders to make similar calls. The newly | :37:40. | :37:43.
elected president of France, Emmanuel Macron, also spoke to the | :37:44. | :37:48.
Prime Minister and offered her all means of corporation to help Britain | :37:49. | :37:51.
in the fight against terrorism. In Berlin this morning, the union flag | :37:52. | :37:58.
was at half-mast at the British Embassy, and Germany's Chancellor | :37:59. | :38:03.
offered support and sympathy. TRANSLATION: This suspected | :38:04. | :38:07.
terrorist attack will merely strengthened determination to | :38:08. | :38:10.
continue working together with friends in the UK to combat those | :38:11. | :38:14.
who plan and carry out such despicable acts, people in the UK | :38:15. | :38:18.
can rest assured that Germany stands shoulder to shoulder with them. In | :38:19. | :38:26.
Brussels, flags at the European Commission and here at the European | :38:27. | :38:29.
Parliament were also lowered out of respect for the victims. The | :38:30. | :38:36.
president of the European Council, Donald Tusk, said on Twitter: | :38:37. | :38:45.
in a telegram to Theresa May, Vladimir Putin offered to step up | :38:46. | :38:51.
Russian counterterrorism cooperation with Britain, and other leaders from | :38:52. | :38:56.
around the world offered their condolences and support. Japan's | :38:57. | :39:00.
Prime Minister said this week's summit of G-7 leaders in Italy would | :39:01. | :39:03.
show determination to stand up to terrorism. The president, of China, | :39:04. | :39:08.
who visited London last year, telephoned the Queen to say that | :39:09. | :39:12.
China stood with Britain at this difficult time, and the Prime | :39:13. | :39:17.
Minister of Australia condemned a vile attack, as he called it, | :39:18. | :39:24.
directed at teenagers. This is an attack on innocents, surely there is | :39:25. | :39:29.
no crime more reprehensible than the murder of children, this is a direct | :39:30. | :39:36.
and brutal attack on young people everywhere, on freedom everywhere. | :39:37. | :39:41.
It was a message that echoed around the world, across social media. | :39:42. | :39:50.
The Prime Minister chaired a meeting of COBRA today, then she came up | :39:51. | :39:55.
here to Manchester, went to one of the hospitals here, thoughts to the | :39:56. | :39:59.
Chief Constable and other police commanders about their | :40:00. | :40:02.
investigation. Let's go to Downing Street now. | :40:03. | :40:03.
Our chief political correspondent Vicki Young is at Downing Street. | :40:04. | :40:07.
Extremely busy day for the Prime Minister, we gather there will be | :40:08. | :40:15.
another meeting of COBRA later on? Very much the practicalities of all | :40:16. | :40:18.
this, she was Home Secretary for several years, this is her area of | :40:19. | :40:24.
expertise, she will be wanting to keep a very close eye on all of | :40:25. | :40:30.
that, whether it is about victims and police investigation, there will | :40:31. | :40:35.
be another meeting, more in the coming days here in Whitehall, and | :40:36. | :40:40.
in Downing Street, not just about the practicalities, when this kind | :40:41. | :40:44.
of horror happens, people do look to the Prime Minister, they look to the | :40:45. | :40:49.
leader of the country to voice what people are feeling, to speak to the | :40:50. | :40:53.
nation, that is what she tried to do today, when she spoke on the steps, | :40:54. | :40:58.
you could hear her anger, but also her defiance, not allowing values to | :40:59. | :41:04.
be torn apart by people, that they would prevail in the end. I also | :41:05. | :41:08.
think trying to give voice to the incomprehension that people are | :41:09. | :41:11.
feeling, this attack seems to be different in the sense that it is | :41:12. | :41:15.
deliberately targeted children, you could certainly tell that was | :41:16. | :41:18.
something she wanted to focus on, she said it was in fact a sickening | :41:19. | :41:24.
cowardice. Also said two people, don't just focus on the scenes of | :41:25. | :41:28.
carnage and the horror that has been seen there, she wants people to | :41:29. | :41:33.
think about the positives as well, response of the emergency services, | :41:34. | :41:35.
the people who did not run away from it but ran to it, members of the | :41:36. | :41:39.
public offering to help. When people may be feeling despair, she is not | :41:40. | :41:44.
the first rigid Prime Minister to have the stand here and respond to | :41:45. | :41:48.
this kind of atrocity but she is trying to say to people, do not | :41:49. | :41:52.
despair, there must be hope as well. General election campaign, in the | :41:53. | :41:56.
middle of it, does not feel like that, campaigning has been | :41:57. | :42:02.
suspended, and probably tomorrow, it is difficult to see how quickly they | :42:03. | :42:05.
will go back to the cut and thrust of that kind of debate, wouldn't | :42:06. | :42:11.
feel appropriate at the moment. The Prime Minister herself will be | :42:12. | :42:13.
abroad at Nato summits and the G-7 in the next few days, but of course, | :42:14. | :42:19.
eventually, people will say, you have to carry on otherwise the | :42:20. | :42:24.
terrorists have won, so they will return at some point to the general | :42:25. | :42:28.
election campaigning. Thank you very much indeed, and at six o'clock | :42:29. | :42:34.
there is going to be a vigil here in the city centre, to remember the | :42:35. | :42:38.
victims of the atrocity at the Manchester Arena. | :42:39. | :42:40.
Manchester is a city trying to pull together after this devastating | :42:41. | :42:45.
attack, as Dan Johnson now reports. Manchester's streets, | :42:46. | :42:51.
busy with shoppers. Some shocked, some | :42:52. | :42:53.
sad but determined. They are proud, too, | :42:54. | :43:10.
of the way people here responded. There is nobody in this world that | :43:11. | :43:12.
will keep us away of coming to the centre of Manchester, | :43:13. | :43:16.
it's vibrancy, it's Metropolitan feeling, it's fantastic, | :43:17. | :43:18.
no amount of evilness will ever, ever dampen any good thought | :43:19. | :43:20.
there is about Manchester. Greater Manchester's new mayor | :43:21. | :43:23.
shared their pride and defiance. I want to thank the | :43:24. | :43:26.
people of Manchester. Even in the minutes | :43:27. | :43:32.
after the attack, They gave the best possible | :43:33. | :43:34.
immediate response to those And it'll be that spirit | :43:35. | :43:41.
of Manchester that will prevail There were so many offers to donate | :43:42. | :43:45.
blood, this morning they had Obviously, with the tragedy that has | :43:46. | :43:59.
happened, if we can help in that So, it would be nice, you know, | :44:00. | :44:03.
to do something to help. I really wanted to come down and see | :44:04. | :44:07.
if I could help at all. An overwhelming response | :44:08. | :44:11.
on social media. I thought I would come down | :44:12. | :44:13.
and try to give blood. Last night, an instinctive reaction | :44:14. | :44:16.
from the city's cab drivers, not to run from danger but to help | :44:17. | :44:21.
others find their families I have just come down to see | :44:22. | :44:24.
if anyone needed a lift home f they were stranded | :44:25. | :44:28.
or lost or anything. As a good citizen, it's | :44:29. | :44:33.
the time where everyone I thought I'd come out | :44:34. | :44:35.
and try to help the people without worry being paying | :44:36. | :44:50.
to get home. This city has felt | :44:51. | :44:53.
destruction before. An IRA bomb exploded at the Arndale | :44:54. | :44:55.
shopping centre in 1996, injuring hundreds of people, | :44:56. | :44:57.
just yards from last night's attack. This post box was about the only | :44:58. | :45:00.
thing that survived. The city centre has been rebuilt | :45:01. | :45:02.
around it, but it is a reminder of the strength and resilience | :45:03. | :45:05.
of the city and it is that same spirit that people | :45:06. | :45:08.
are relying on here today. And this evening, people will come | :45:09. | :45:10.
together in the city centre Tough, gritty resolve | :45:11. | :45:13.
is a natural response here, That vigil is about to start in | :45:14. | :45:35.
Manchester City centre to remember those who died. Tony Lloyd is there, | :45:36. | :45:41.
who was Manchester's Interim Mayor for the past two years, before the | :45:42. | :45:44.
election of Andy Burnham, and former Police and Crime Commissioner for | :45:45. | :45:52.
Greater Manchester. Thank you very much for joining us, what are your | :45:53. | :45:55.
thoughts on how important it is for the city of Manchester to come | :45:56. | :45:59.
together tonight with this vigil, and show it will not be defeated by | :46:00. | :46:04.
terrorism? You can see behind me there are throngs of people coming | :46:05. | :46:08.
out to show their respect to the families of those who died, the | :46:09. | :46:13.
goodwill to those who have been injured, but in the end, the | :46:14. | :46:17.
resolution that says, we are not repaired to be divided by a people | :46:18. | :46:23.
who commit this evil. The murder of children in this city is | :46:24. | :46:27.
devastating, but we will stand together, we will comfort the | :46:28. | :46:30.
parade, we will work with those who have been injured and we will get | :46:31. | :46:34.
through this working together. That is the spirit of Manchester. We were | :46:35. | :46:41.
hearing from the Chief Constable, Ian Hopkins, saying, this is a | :46:42. | :46:46.
multicultural city, it has two stay that way, it has to stand together, | :46:47. | :46:50.
there cannot be any reprisals or any kind of hate crime in the wake of | :46:51. | :46:55.
this atrocity? We pride ourselves on the fact that this is a very diverse | :46:56. | :47:00.
city region, people from literally all over the world make their home | :47:01. | :47:03.
here, we live together as good neighbours. The idea that that | :47:04. | :47:08.
diversity can be challenged by the act of one evil individual, is | :47:09. | :47:14.
unacceptable. We have stood together in the past against those who would | :47:15. | :47:19.
divide us, we will stand together, and that is what you see tonight, | :47:20. | :47:23.
people from all backgrounds, ethnicities and culture, in the city | :47:24. | :47:27.
of Manchester, but across the city region, as the jewels are taking | :47:28. | :47:32.
place. We do stand together and we are not prepared to tolerate those | :47:33. | :47:35.
who will divide us and we will not give them any kind of oxygen. The | :47:36. | :47:41.
love and compassion that was shown last night by the emergency | :47:42. | :47:46.
services, who were brilliant, but also ordinary citizens offering | :47:47. | :47:49.
homes and hotel rooms and taxi rides to those in need, that is what | :47:50. | :47:54.
Greater Manchester is all about, and I am proud of that, it brings out, | :47:55. | :47:59.
sadly, the best in us on an occasion like this. Of course we think of | :48:00. | :48:04.
those who have suffered, that is foremost in our thoughts, sad and | :48:05. | :48:09.
outrageous though that is, but we will stand together. And we are | :48:10. | :48:15.
hearing from the police tonight that the suspected suicide bomber who has | :48:16. | :48:20.
been named was born in Manchester, in 1994, 22 years old. What is your | :48:21. | :48:29.
reaction to that? Again, it is one of enormous sadness that a British | :48:30. | :48:36.
young man should be so deluded by for whatever reasons that he is | :48:37. | :48:40.
prepared to take the innocent lives of children, the innocent lives of | :48:41. | :48:45.
adolescents who went out to enjoy themselves, there can be no joy in | :48:46. | :48:51.
any of this. Save for that little ray of hope that shows that people | :48:52. | :48:56.
in times like this come together and say, we will not accept evil acts as | :48:57. | :49:00.
ways of dividing us, that is the loud message, not simply from | :49:01. | :49:05.
Greater Manchester but from this country. We do stand together | :49:06. | :49:13.
against this kind of evil. Tony Lloyd, former interim air of | :49:14. | :49:17.
Manchester, thank you very much for joining us and for your thoughts. | :49:18. | :49:22.
The Manchester Arena behind me is the second biggest indoor music | :49:23. | :49:29.
venue in Europe, with a capacity of 20 1000. -- 21,000. | :49:30. | :49:42.
The singer Ariana Grande tweeted that she was "broken, | :49:43. | :49:44.
And the group Take That have confirmed they'll | :49:45. | :49:48.
postpone their planned show tonight in Liverpool out of | :49:49. | :49:50.
Our entertainment correspondent Colin Paterson reports | :49:51. | :49:52.
now on the response from the music industry. | :49:53. | :49:57.
VOICEOVER: It was a situation with which any parent could identify. | :49:58. | :50:00.
Dropping your children off at an event they've been looking | :50:01. | :50:02.
forward to for months and coming back to pick them up | :50:03. | :50:05.
They'd come to see Ariana Grande's Dangerous Woman Tour but ended up | :50:06. | :50:09.
Members of an audience which became the target of a terrorist attack. | :50:10. | :50:13.
The singer made her name as a children's TV star | :50:14. | :50:15.
and still attracts a very young, predominantly female fan base. | :50:16. | :50:18.
Many in the crowd pre-teens, some as young as seven or eight. | :50:19. | :50:21.
Entertainment stars expressed their horror at the night's event. | :50:22. | :50:33.
It shocks me every time we hear this sort of news, | :50:34. | :50:35.
that attacks like this can happen, but especially when there | :50:36. | :50:38.
will be so many children at this concert tonight. | :50:39. | :50:40.
holding our little ones even tighter this evening. | :50:41. | :50:50.
Last year, Time Magazine named Ariana Grande as one of the 100 most | :50:51. | :50:53.
influential people on the planet, highlighting her 150 million social | :50:54. | :50:56.
media followers and the role it plays in attracting her young fans. | :50:57. | :50:59.
It was with a tweet she communicated after the attack, | :51:00. | :51:04.
From the bottom of my heart, I am so, so, sorry, | :51:05. | :51:07.
Now the world of music is using the same platform | :51:08. | :51:19.
to voice their support, both for her and the | :51:20. | :51:21.
Taylor Swift says she is offering her thoughts and prayers and tears | :51:22. | :51:25.
for all those affected by the Manchester tragedy. | :51:26. | :51:31.
Harry Styles described himself as "heart broken" | :51:32. | :51:33.
A sentiment shared by Katy Perry who says she is broken hearted | :51:34. | :51:37.
for the families and broken hearted for Ariana Grande. | :51:38. | :51:39.
And those stars can picture exactly where the attack took place | :51:40. | :51:42.
because the Manchester Arena is the second-largest indoor | :51:43. | :51:44.
and their world tours all take them there. | :51:45. | :51:55.
were due to play the first of three homecoming gigs in the venue. | :51:56. | :52:01.
Harvey Goldsmith, the promoter behind Live Aid, | :52:02. | :52:08.
has huge implications for the live music market. | :52:09. | :52:11.
The most vulnerable point is on the exit and, therefore, | :52:12. | :52:14.
I presume all the arenas and promoters together will review | :52:15. | :52:16.
how to deal with people leaving concerts but if it's outside | :52:17. | :52:19.
the concert area, the arena itself, where the concert takes place, | :52:20. | :52:21.
if it is on the way out, it is very difficult to do much more | :52:22. | :52:25.
It is believed that Ariana Grande will cancel the remaining | :52:26. | :52:36.
European dates of her tour, which was scheduled | :52:37. | :52:38.
The former child star is now having to deal with the most | :52:39. | :52:42.
Let's talk through more the invitations of what happened here, | :52:43. | :53:04.
we are joined by a professor of political economy at the Manchester | :53:05. | :53:08.
Metropolitan University. This building behind me, the Manchester | :53:09. | :53:12.
Arena, such a soft target, and particularly last night, when we | :53:13. | :53:17.
know that a lot of the people in the audience were very young indeed. | :53:18. | :53:22.
Very true, does not get more soft than that, the person who did the | :53:23. | :53:27.
attack last night, the terrorist attack, knew exactly what they were | :53:28. | :53:32.
doing, determined to die, came to kill himself and kill as many people | :53:33. | :53:36.
as possible with him, and that is precisely what he did, and targeted | :53:37. | :53:42.
very young children, just leaving a concert, looking for their parents | :53:43. | :53:46.
to take them home. Knew exactly what he was doing, prepared very well for | :53:47. | :53:50.
the attack, unfortunately, he caused a lot of pain. Do you think he was | :53:51. | :53:58.
acting alone? Very difficult at this stage to read that conclusion but | :53:59. | :54:01.
from what happened, possible to actually say that he has prepared | :54:02. | :54:06.
for this very well, obviously has prepared explosives, usually, such | :54:07. | :54:12.
attacks are difficult to conduct and organise alone. So I assume he has | :54:13. | :54:18.
links, some kind of links, remains to be seen how big and how close | :54:19. | :54:24.
those links are to the Islamist state in Syria. Islamic State have | :54:25. | :54:29.
claimed responsibility. That was not really mean that they have actually | :54:30. | :54:35.
organise and plan this operation. -- remains to be seen how deep and how | :54:36. | :54:40.
close those links are to Islamic State in Syria. We have to wait and | :54:41. | :54:43.
see what comes out of this operation so far. The police have now named | :54:44. | :54:50.
the suspected suicide bomber, we are hearing, he was born in Manchester. | :54:51. | :54:55.
That is very sad but also expected, this fits very well with the profile | :54:56. | :55:02.
of most terrorists, if we can use that term, very young, second | :55:03. | :55:06.
generation, usually not very educated, they could be but they are | :55:07. | :55:13.
not usually highly educated, they have a troubled life, most of these | :55:14. | :55:18.
guys, they have faced some kind of difficulties, either at school, | :55:19. | :55:25.
finding a job, with their families. What do we know so far about most | :55:26. | :55:30.
terrorists that commit these attacks, this fits that. Does there | :55:31. | :55:34.
need to be more security now add music venues like this one, we are | :55:35. | :55:39.
about to have a sum of music festivals, the FA Cup final coming | :55:40. | :55:44.
up as well. -- summer. Such an operation will have security | :55:45. | :55:50.
implications and there will be more security as a result, but we must | :55:51. | :55:53.
keep in mind, no matter how excellent we are, and this country | :55:54. | :55:58.
has one of the best counterterrorism experts in the world, if someone is | :55:59. | :56:02.
determined to die, it will be very difficult to stop each one of them, | :56:03. | :56:07.
and we need to remember that unfortunately for our excellent | :56:08. | :56:09.
security officers, they need to get it right ten out of ten times, but | :56:10. | :56:14.
the terrorist only needs to get it right one time. Thank you very much | :56:15. | :56:20.
for joining us. Let me show you pictures from the vigil for up in | :56:21. | :56:27.
central Manchester tonight. To remember those who died in the | :56:28. | :56:30.
atrocity at the Manchester Arena last night. 22 people have lost | :56:31. | :56:36.
their lives, the youngest aged only eight, 59 people have been injured, | :56:37. | :56:41.
and are being treated in hospitals in and around Manchester this | :56:42. | :56:42.
evening. As such a sad day in Manchester | :56:43. | :56:58.
draws to a close, we will get the weather forecast. | :56:59. | :57:02.
It is going to get warmer over the next few days, quite warm today, in | :57:03. | :57:08.
the sunshine, 22 degrees, we have seen more cloud across southern | :57:09. | :57:09.
England, | :57:10. | :57:11. |
