Spanish police foil second terror attack after 13 people were killed

in Barcelona yesterday - five men are shot dead in Cambrils,

That is after a car was driven into pedestrians, injuring seven,

including a police officer. People from 24 countries were caught

up in the attack on Las Ramblas 80 people are injured,

some seriously, after a van ploughed through pedestrians on the famous

tourist landmark in People caught up the attack have

been describing fleeing for their lives into shops and bars

as the driver of the van We will be talking to eyewitnesses

caught up in both incidents and bringing you all

the latest developments. Welcome to BBC News, we are right in

the heart of Barcelona is placid Catalonia, Catalonia Square, just at

the end of Las Ramblas. This is where the van driver began his

attack, he drove down Las Ramblas, swerving and weaving left and right

and leaving 13 people dead and dozens injured from more than 20

different countries. Three people, according to Spanish police, have

been arrested in connection with the attack. It seems that a fully

fledged terror network has been operating here in Catalonia, in the

early hours of this morning in the town of Cambrils, about 100

kilometres south-west of here, there was another incident in which a car

was driven at pedestrians, seven people injured, including a police

officer. This time the vehicle overturned, police opened fire very

quickly and shot dead five suspected terrorists. They were reportedly

wearing explosive belts, there was then a series of controlled

explosions. Let's get this report from Sarah Corker.

In the early hours of Friday morning, a dramatic shoot out

The authorities say five suspected terrorists were shot dead by police.

The next thing, police were right there, it was really quick.

Then they started shouting at the guy and the next thing,

The incident in Cambrils is being linked to the deadly van

attack in the centre of Barcelona, less than 100 miles away.

Hundreds of holiday-makers, locals, shoppers ran for their lives.

This white van was used as a weapon to kill.

For half a kilometre, the vehicle ploughed

into pedestrians on Spain's most famous boulevard.

I saw a white van with the side door open.

Whether it was police or from the van, I don't know,

We ran into the Burger King to get shelter.

Police released this photo of Driss Oukabir, born in Morroco,

whose documents were used to rent the van, but latest reports

suggest he told police his passport was stolen.

The so-called Islamic State group said it was behind the attack.

TRANSLATION: I want to express the solidarity of the whole

of Spain with Barcelona, today hit by jihadist terrorism,

like other cities around the world before it.

The authorities are now linking the attacks in Barcelona

and Cambrils with an explosion on Wednesday in the town of Alcanar.

Police believe suspects at the house were preparing explosives.

And, as people anxiously wait for news of loved ones,

the authorities have warned the number of dead may rise.

Life is beginning to return to normal at Las Ramblas, market stall

holder is going back to work, pedestrians wandering up and down.

You can seek police tape on the pavement where the van had

pedestrians, otherwise no sign of the horror that unfolded yesterday.

Let's focus for a moment on what has happened Cambrils, around 100

kilometres away, a popular seaside town where a car believed to be an

Audi was driven into pedestrians. Five men shot dead by police,

suspected terrorists. This is what eyewitnesses told us.

The Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has said that what happened in

Barcelona was a jihadist attack, and it has been claimed by so-called

that will be particularly in Catalonia Square at the end of Las

Ramblas, and there are three days of national mourning across Spain as to

what has happened in Barcelona. Back to you in the studio.

Spanish attacks, Spanish police say they believe there may have been

eight people in a cell which carried out the attack and that the group

planned to use butane gas canisters, that is Reuters quoting a judicial

source with knowledge of the investigation. There was an incident

on Wednesday at a place around 100 miles or so from Barcelona where it

has exploded, a huge explosion, the house completely destroyed. Police

investigating that found canisters inside the home and they believe

there was perhaps an intention to build a bomb back, but we now hear

that the Spanish authorities believe that butane gas canisters were

planned to have some involvement in the attack in Barcelona on Thursday

after that initial explosion on Wednesday. There is also the

separate investigation into what happened in Cambrils, seven injured

after a car drove into them and five men were shot dead wearing fake

suicide belts. The authorities investigating these three separate

but linked incidents. In the studio we will be speaking to a security

expert later about the investigation and the threat. Now the latest from

Barcelona with Ben. about the investigation and the

threat. Right now, all of the very latest from Barcelona, with Ben

Brown. The authorities here now say a

terrorist cell of eight people look to have been behind the attack at

Las Ramblas, just down there, behind me, in which 13 people were killed

when that white van was driven at high speed for about half a

kilometre, half the length of Las Ramblas, injuring dozens of people,

some of them seriously ill in hospital right now full. The other

main development overnight was another vehicle being driven into

pedestrians, this time in the town of Cambrils, seaside town, 100

kilometres away. Five suspected terrorists were then shot dead after

that car overturned, by police, an eyewitness, Fitzroy Davis, filmed

some of that shooting, I should say, viewers may find some of this video

that was filmed therein Cambrils distressing and is disturbing, we

are going to show you an excerpt of it right now.

hope to speak with him in just a few minutes on BBC News. Let's talk more

about what happened here in the centre of Barcelona, Las Ramblas

behind me, one of the most popular tourist destination is not just here

in Barcelona but in all of Europe, people come from all over the

continent, all over the world, to walk up and down this famous Las

Ramblas, this van was driven at high speed for half a kilometre,

ploughing into pedestrians. Richard Gregg is from Dartford, Kent, you

witnessed some of the aftermath, tell us what you saw. We were

walking back onto Las Ramblas, immediately after the van had hit,

did not really know, it was surreal and chaotic at the time, all we

heard was a couple of tourists shouting that people had been hit

and there was blood everywhere. We got onto Las Ramblas and people were

running everywhere, we could not get anywhere near our apartment, which

is literally parallel with where the van ended up, so we made our way

through the back streets, which were filled with people at that time,

panicking, really, the police also were in the back streets very

quickly. Las Ramblas has numerous side alley ways, all the way up and

down, literally flooded with police, on foot, on motorcycles, getting us

off the street and clearly looking for someone, we now know... When we

got back to our street we could see where the van had ended, bodies on

the floor, we made our way back to our apartment as quickly as we

could, we ended up within the police called in and could not leave the

building, because the market place where a lot of the armed police were

was literally behind our building. We were in this sort of track

position. How long were you trapped there for? Have you been able to go

back? We stayed in the apartment for two or three hours, until we got the

international news, nothing on the news for about 20 minutes, half an

hour, we did not know the severity of what had happened apart from

judging by the numbers of people running through the streets and the

volume of police and helicopters overhead, so we knew it was fairly

serious. We left the apartment at 9:30pm, to meet friends on the other

side of Barcelona, check they were all OK, the whole city was fairly

quiet, fairly subdued, normally you would expect Barcelona to be buzzing

at this time of year. Obviously everyone is now very on edge. If you

had been walking down Las Ramblas a fume and is earlier, you could have

been caught up in the attack. We would have been where the van ended

up had we been two minutes earlier, that is where we were headed. We are

really grateful that we were just two minutes behind where the attack

happened. You are on holiday here, are you staying, despite what

happened question mark we are staying until Monday, taking it day

by day, seeing how things go. It was fiercely... We were freaked out last

night, and on edge, we feel a little bit calmer today, as you have

mentioned, Las Ramblas is getting back to some semblance of normality,

as lots of people down there, stalls opening back up, we feel fairly

reassured by the volume of police, and the security service response.

We are intending to stay. You are a bit shaken? A little bit shocked and

on edge, has not really sunk in, the first, sort of ten minutes after the

attack it was all fairly surreal, half the crowd were running and

screaming away, the other half had no clue what was happening at all,

just standing around, looking, wondering what is going on. So it

was all a bit surreal for the first bit, and then once it became clear

what was happening, that is when it starts to sink in. When we saw

people on the floor being tended to by emergency services we suddenly

realise the severity of the situation. We were very concerned

last night, until they had arrested anyone, because we did not know

where anybody was, now, we hear that the driver is probably still not

apprehended. That leaves a little bit of apprehension, worried, about

where we are going to go tonight, what we are going to do today, we

want to stay insecure places. There has been a string of these vehicle

attacks across Europe, including London, did you realise pretty

quickly that that is probably what it was, when you saw everybody

running? We realised, when the first tourist was shouting out that people

had been hit, we thought perhaps it was just a tragic car accident, by

the time we saw the volume of police and we could see that there was the

van there and bodies on the floor, we guessed pretty quickly that this

was some form of deliberate attack. Especially knowing Las Ramblas as

well, it is a prime target for that sort of attack because you have

concentrated pedestrians in a small area, literally nowhere to run. As

the van was going down, those people had nowhere to go because traffic

either side of you, literally a complete mess of people in the

middle. Nowhere to escape. We guessed exactly what was going on.

saw, Richard, from Kent, thank you very much for your time. We have

been talking as well about what happened in the early hours of this

morning in Cambrils, about 100 kilometres away, another vehicle,

this time a car, was driven into pedestrians, seven injured including

a police officer, that car overturned, five suspected

terrorists shot dead very quickly indeed by the police, by armed

police, a British man, Fitzroy Davis from Wolverhampton filmed some of

us on the line now stop tell us where you were and what you saw, and

what was going through your mind at the time. We were sitting in a bar,

outfront, some girls ran in, scared, fear on their faces, and one of the

guys jumped up and had a look at what is going on, and people started

running past us, and whatever, and one of the guys said, run. We came

out of the bar, I was standing on the street, and I got my phone out,

because I saw this guy come running towards me, and I started filming.

First Humvee said, call the police, within 30 seconds, the police turned

up, and then, they drew their guns, there were shouting, shouting

something to the guy, and then next thing I know, shots fired, he went

down. And then within two seconds, stood back up, then he hopped over a

fence, then he came walking to the police, smiling, laughing at them,

and then they shot him again. And then he fell down. People might be

amazed that you were just filming that, were you aware of what was

going to unfold as she started filming? Not until the police turned

up. It was only when the police turned up with guns drawn that I

realised, this is serious. And then, when the first shots was fired, in

one mind, people were shouting, come on, and go, but in the other mind,

the adrenaline was there and I thought, I will carry on filming, so

that is what I did full top tell us what you are doing daring Cambrils,

one of the people you are there with was hit with a bit of shrapnel, is

that right? Yes, he has gone to hospital now, having him checked

out. It is like a burn on his leg. He is OK. But we made sure that he

went to the hospital. We are at a judo camp, first time we have been

here. It puts a bit of a dampener on it. We had a good camp, it has put a

bit of a dampener on it, but hopefully, this afternoon, we can

get everybody's spirits back up, get straight into the camp. The camp is

still going on, a few people have gone to the camp, but a couple of my

youngsters have not gone to the camp, they did not feel like they

wanted to go to the camp. Horrific events, are people trying

to get on with life as normal despite what happened? We are about

one mile away from the actual where it was, and so I can't tell you

exactly what is happening down there, but where we are is normal

people, walking, going to the shop, doing the normal things, and

whatever, it is the judo, quite a few people going to the judo, and a

few who have not gone. Fitzroy Davies, thank you for

talking to us and for sharing that video with us, extraordinary footage

that was filmed by Fitzroy Davies. The early hours of the morning,

local time, in Cambrils, with five suspected terrorists shot dead by

armed police. Sources in Barcelona telling us they believe a terror

network of eight people was involved in the attack, the van attack at Las

Ramblas, yesterday afternoon, before 5pm, when the van driver at high

speeds down Las Ramblas, killing 13 and injuring dozens more people,

people from more than 20 countries, 20 countries were casualties of

that, many of them from France, we are hearing, about 20 French people

injured in that attack. There will be a minutes silence Elizabeth later

on today in the heart of Barcelona as people remember and pay respects

to the dead, and injured, and three days now of national mourning

declared by the Spanish government. That is the latest from here,

back to the studio in London. STUDIO: We will be back with more

from Barcelona in a little while. Right now, we will focus on the

security issues around these vehicle attacks because there has been those

two attacks in Barcelona and nearby, in Cambrils, but there has been

several attacks over the course of the past year, the question asked,

can vehicle attacks be prevented? In just over a year, Europe has seen

seven attacks were vehicles have been used as weapons.

A threat, but he talked of buying guns...

to stop vehicles running into pedestrians on the bridge.

But an attacker could just pick a different crowded place.

The authorities are also looking at things like more checks on people

So could this attack have been prevented?

What's the state of radicalism in Spain, and how are

To give us an insight into these questions and more I'm

joined by Eduardo Saldana, am expert in radicalism

and security in Madrid and here in the studio

by Lee Dodgeridge, a director at Covenant Security

and Risk Management and a former member of the UK's National Counter

-- kerb does not join us, it is Frank Gardner.

The authorities believe eight people were in Bolt in a cell which carried

out the attack in Barcelona, what are you hearing? It is not a little

wolf, as originally thought. The line the Spanish investigators are

going down is a network, they are linking all three incidents. The

attack on Las Ramblas with a vehicle which mowed down and killed 13

people and injured over 100, the other attack on the port 60

kilometres south of their where the Tom Okker five attackers were shot

and killed, and on Wednesday evening before those there was an explosion

on a flat which did not seem suspicious at the time but they now

think it was some form of preparation or test for explosives.

They think there was a network planning to use gas explosives.

Clearly this is happening right under the noses of the Spanish

authorities. They had a tip-off, a warning from the CAA, almost

certainly be more -- Moroccan authorities would have tipped them

off as well. One of the alleged perpetrators came through from the

Spanish enclave on the north African coast.

In terms of the potential scale of any network they are talking about a

cell of eight. What has been going on in Spain in terms of

radicalisation and terror networks? Eight is quite an unusually large

number. These days. Because Western intelligence agencies and the

Russians and Chinese, for that matter, have got infinitely better

surveillance and interception, but working against there is encryption.

Generally people are tending to keep their number is small, because the

more people you have on the network, the greater the risk that somebody

will be caught and turned witness or that they will be intercepted and

give the game away. That is quite big. Spain is a target for a number

of reasons. It has got a very large Moroccan population, most of whom

are completely peaceful and law-abiding, but it is a fertile

pool for jihadis to hunt in because some of them have spent time in

Morocco with Al-Qaeda supporters, some have gone to so-called Islamic

State. That is in no way to prejudice against the peaceful

majority. There was also the fact that hard-core jihadists have never

given up trying to reclaim Spain and Portugal and Andalusia for the

caliphate, it was ruled by over 500 years as part of the Islamic empire

and they want it back. The last attack in Spain was in Madrid in

2004, what has gone on since in terms of counterterrorism methods?

Lots of arrests. Spain already had a very effective counterterrorism

programme because they had to deal for decades with the Basque

separatist group at which is now lay down its arms. They have been pretty

good on counterterrorism. -- the Basque separatist group ET a. When

the Madrid attacks happened in 2004, MI5 originally thought it would be

ETA, because that is what the Spanish government told them. They

have never eradicated all the jihadis cells and there are people

coming up from North Africa and certain factors that lead to people

becoming vulnerable to recruitment such as unemployment, a feeling of

exclusion from Spanish society, a certain degree of Rachel prejudice

showing and profiling. -- racial prejudice and profiling. There are

certain areas of cities where there is a class that feels excluded from

normal society. These are the people preyed upon by ices recruiters. And

the authorities are working to try to find the driver of the van, who

escaped from the scene? Unless he was one of the five shot in the

second attack, they are not certain. It is very suspicious because

everybody initially said it is this guy Driss Oukabir, he said my

brother stole my ID papers, it was not me, so they are trying to

investigate and pin it down at the moment. Leader Dredge, you have been

looking at protecting pedestrians on the streets of London in particular

with this new threat of car tax -- Lee, you have been looking. Whatever

you been looking at in particular? About the latest attacks over the

last two McRee years or so, how easy it is for a vehicle to be used to

cause devastating injuries and fatalities like we sadly saw

yesterday. We are working on a current project where the initial

design for renewing the streetscape of a high-profile retailer in London

was designed to prevent the mopeds style attacks we have seen almost

weekly. We have now been brought in to assist and say is there any more

we can do to maybe safeguard pedestrians from this form of attack

as well? So we are working closely with the architects to say how can

we put in long-lasting measures, redesigned the streetscape? We have

seen immediate measures put in place in places like Westminster Bridge in

London but they are restricted by how much weight they can put on them

and the temporary measures. When we had the opportunity to look at a

large retail area on an iconic street in London, we are doing a

number of things with them. Even if that ultimately becomes a template

for other areas it is not always possible to do it everywhere. And

how quick terrorists are changing the way they operate, once one

threat is effectively protected against they will look for something

else? History has told us they are very adapted a change in various

tactics. The first indications of a vehicle being used to attack people

was promoted by Al-Qaeda in their Inspire Magazine back in 2010. We

have not seen those in mainland Europe until the last couple of you

is, but Hammers has used that tactic in Israel for quite some time. --

but Hamas has. It is early an investigation but it would maybe

indicate they were planning a different of attack, maybe explosion

on Wednesday has made them change plans. It is easy to selected

vehicle and carry out those sorts of attacks. Eduardo Saldana joins us

from Madrid. Thank you for joining us. Hello. How much of a hobo 's

Barcelona for radicalisation? -- how much of a hub is Barcelona? There is

the North of Morocco, Barcelona, Madrid and another time. Barcelona

is probably the second largest city in radicalisation in Spain. In these

last years we have been suffering a huge amount of special forces

operations, counterterrorism operations in the city. And one of

the arrested individuals comes from a particular city, but we could see

Dann say that Barcelona is the second-largest area for in Spain --

but we could say that Barcelona is the second largest area for

radicalisation in Spain. There was a warning from the CIA that Las

Ramblas was potentially a target. What has been going on to try to

prevent attacks? Exactly. From last year to this year there have been

seven operations. We can see any increase in the operation is done by

the police. However, they have not managed to focus on the

radicalisation in the cities. Spain is one of the biggest countries with

Muslim populations, so it difficult to focus on all those neighbourhoods

on the periphery of Barcelona. What are the suspicions around how

individuals are radicalised, how it may be operating? The special forces

are focused on three main environments where we can find these

radicalisation processes, especially in Spain. We had to bear in two

factors that play a very important role in the radicalisation process.

One is the links with some familiar fronts all religious chiefs that

radicalised these individuals, the others are the connections with

social patterns. There is the focus following the radicalisation

process. On an external level, the foreign fighters crossed through

Madrid and Barcelona, they usually stop in all of those hubs and are

part of the process we are suffering. Finally and probably most

the online radicalisation, the cyberspace. In Barcelona yesterday

we saw fake explosives that they were reading. You can find

information online about those areas. Frank, IS claimed

responsibility within hours for the attack, saying it was carried out by

Islamic State soldiers. The question is how joint is it? Was it ordered

at a higher level or inspired? So-called Islamic State has offered

no proof that they did this. It is perfectly possible that they did,

almost certainly it is a follow-on, a long-term response to the call by

someone who was their chief spokesman and foreign planning

specialist who in September 2014 gave a speech calling on IS

followers around the world, particularly in Europe, to basically

carry out crude attacks, low impact... Sorry, low tech, high

impact, rather they could. I will not list the methods, let's not give

people ideas. This would fall into that category. This is why we have

seen a succession of vehicle running attacks in Stockholm, Nice, London,

Barcelona and Berlin. I think it is becoming quite difficult for them

now in what remains of their caliphate to operationally direct

attacks like this. They can inspire, they can long-distance give some

guidance, perhaps even arrange for some money to be passed through

their traces banking system, but it is very hard for them to

operationally direct these things in the way that Al-Qaeda did, for

example with 9/11 or some of the earlier attacks in the early part of

the century. How difficult is it to intercept what is going on with

encrypted weight of communication being used and the fact that these

attacks can easily be carried out with little planning? It is very

difficult for the intelligence services and the police, especially

the levels of encryption we are seeing on day-to-day apps like

Whatsapp, people use that all the time. There is a good purpose for

having them but it is very difficult. As we mentioned earlier,

demented people involved in this at the moment is quite surprising, as

Frank mentioned, about the exposure they have given themselves, there

are eight people and there is more chance that one will slip up. It is

very difficult to intercede on some of that. It will be interesting to

draw on some parallels with Paris. If it was a coordinated cell working

there, is this the final cell we have? In Paris there was the second

cell. IS were in a totally different place at the time of the Paris

attack to where we are now with their level of disruption. It would

be interesting to see how the pieces are linked together.

When the investigations into the network and folds it becomes clear

that there are links across borders, different countries will be involved

behind the scenes are trying to piece together the different parts?

It does not necessarily become clear, that is part of the problem,

continental European countries have been quite slow to show the

day-to-day need. They had to improve, and they are improving.

Britain is far from perfect, Britain had four terrorist attacks this

year, nobody is patting themselves on the back in this country at all,

but one of the problems has been that people, particularly jeering

the surge of migrants coming from Turkey, certain terrorist elements

could hide in that and cross borders. Because there is no

biometric checking, in other words an iris scan or fingerprint, people

were able to assume different names. In the case of IS they will burn

their passports and get brand-new ones, possibly faked and forged,

sometimes borrowed from somebody who is dead. They are able to slip back

into Europe. That is proving a mountainous task to try and track

everybody and share the information in real-time. Germany and France and

Spain are getting much, much better at it. How this will pan out post

Brexit for Britain I do not know. What is the sense of how these

attacks unfolded, and what could have happened, because there was

that explosion at a house, gas canisters, it is now suspected that

happened on Wednesday, it is now suspected that the gas canisters

were intended for involvement in some way in what happened in

Barcelona what could have happened in Cambrils

could have been worse except that the police managed to kill the

attackers pretty quickly. After all the attacks, there were different

events, and now they are finding collections among these lotions may

reveal that the terrorists were planning a bigger attack. This is

uncovering what we have seen before. Also, the rental of three Vans and

what happened yesterday night, shows that there was... It is not

official, but we will probably find out that they were connected in some

way. Also, there was a murder in a car, yesterday morning, and now they

are relating that. We may have a bigger problem than

what we expected. And probably the political parties should consider

terrorism more. How well-planned would this scenario have been, a van

attack, any vehicle attacks, is an easy thing to carried out, but the

police are now potentially talking about eight members of the cell, we

see the house with the canisters in, sounds like there was planning over

a period of time. It reveals to things that they were preparing an

attack and also they did not know how to manage and work with these

explosives, because you will have had a real good organised terrorist

cell, they would not have committed these mistakes, that maybe lead them

to take the van and go on through Las Ramblas, and last night in

Cambrils. I don't know how to say exactly in English, but they were

not as prepared as we had seen in terror plots in 2004 and years

after. Ian was talking about the Al-Qaeda manual in 2010 which talked

about using vehicles as weapons, it took some time for that to filter

through, in terms of current thinking on terror organisations,

what is the latest tracking and monitoring? Depressing news, they

are not necessarily always that far ahead of us, we are often, the news

media, are their primary source, for something like this, there will be

watching, they will be watching BBC, sky, CNN, other good networks exist,

for the latest news. In terms of what comes out for what the

jihadistss are planning, when they put out their magazine, online, the

authorities cannot stop it, and unfortunately, there is a wealth of

very dangerous information in there. Anybody in this country who

downloads it can expect a knock on the door from the Metropolitan

Police. Famously a few years ago there was one aimed at an American

audience, American jihadistss, how to make a bomb in your mother's

kitchen, these contain practical advice, particularly alarming one

that has come out the last three days, that is talking about

targeting Britain, France, and the US, certain transport networks, with

certain methods, which are viable. This is very worrying indeed.

Frankly when that stuff comes out, they do not have advanced warning,

unless they have a human agent placed upstream inside the

organisation, given the state of collapse that Isis is in at the

moment, is quite difficult. Thank you all very much, Eduardo, Frank,

and lead, as well, you will be coming back, a little bit later, so

thank you. We will see you again. What was it like to be caught up in

the attack? People who saw a van ploughed into crowds share their

stories. One eyewitness describes the moment

a van hit crowds in Las Ramblas, families were screaming for their

kids. It is a view to beautiful sunny day, packed with tourists, I

was about to sit down for something to eat, literally seconds later,

crashing noise. Every blue started to run so I

started to run, families screaming. -- everybody started to run. People

were panicking. A shopkeeper was speaking, saying something, I spoke

with him, tried to ask him, he said he thought he had seen a van drive

into the crowd, five or six people very seriously injured. At that

point, the ambulance, the fire brigade, the police officers were on

the scene with machine guns and guns, very quickly, people were

panicking, then we were pushed back again. Then pushed further back and

pushed further back. Police absolutely everywhere. People are in

shock. That was one eyewitness, the flags

of UK and Spain are flying at half-mast at Downing Street, in

Barcelona, a one-minute silence at midday, local time. Let's go back to

Ben Brown, for the latest on Barcelona.

A minutes silence here, in just over an hour's time, as people in

Barcelona pay their respects to the dead, the 13 people who lost lives

at Las Ramblas, yesterday afternoon, it has reopened, people walking up

and down it, it is returning to normal. Market stalls have reopened,

bars and restaurants reopening, police take along there, not much

else to show the horror that unfolded there yesterday when a

white van was driven from here, where we are, Placa de Catalunya,

right down, for about half a kilometre, high-speed, through Las

Ramblas, killing 13, injuring dozens more, from many different

nationalities, more than 20 different nationalities. Eight

people, according to the authorities, were involved in a

cell. And in Cambrils, 100 kilometres from here, popular

seaside resort, another vehicle, a car tried to run into pedestrians,

ran into several pedestrians, injuring seven including a police

officer, police opened fire, shot dead five suspected terrorists. Some

of that was filmed by Fitzroy Davies, British man from

Wolverhampton, I have been talking to him about what he saw and heard

full We were sitting in a bar, outfront,

some girls ran in, scared, fear on their faces,

and one of the guys jumped up and had a look at what is going on,

and people started running past us, and whatever, and

one of the guys said, run. We came out of the bar,

I was standing on the street, and I got my phone out,

because I saw this guy come running We got onto Las Ramblas and people

were running everywhere, when the first shot was fired, the

adrenaline was in there. Police have intercepted a terror

cell in Cambrils, 100 kilometres from here. In Barcelona, three

arrests have been made in connection with the attack, the van attack at

Las Ramblas, police say there may have been a cell of some eight

people involved in the preparation, the conspiracy, behind the van

attack, not just the driver, who did flee on foot, so the police hunting

for him, three people arrested in connection with that, that is the

latest from here in Barcelona. Let's get a weather forecast.

A mixture today of sunshine and showers, starting off fairly dry and

sunny, satellite picture here, good deal of sunshine, speck of clout

here, Western and northern parts indicates already we have one or two

showers, though showers becoming more widespread this afternoon,

across England and Wales, pretty much all of us at some point we'll

catch the showers, but it is across Scotland where they will turn into

longer spells of rain in the north-east of Scotland, that could

be quite heavy at times, localised flooding, risk, also, Scotland,

Northern Ireland, good spells of sunshine, a few showers, feeling

fresher than yesterday, blustery, westerly wind, temperatures in the

mid-to high teams. Across southern areas, not quite as warm,

temperatures still potentially into the low 20s, good spells of

sunshine, and a few showers passing by. At Edgbaston for the cricket,

good chance of interruptions. As we go into the evening. Many showers

continuing, rain clearing from the north-east, temperatures down to

about 12, 13. Just a bit chillier than it was last night. For the

start of the weekend, not too bad, fine start, plenty of dry weather,

lots of sunshine, a few showers, across northern and western areas,

temperatures getting up to the high teams, low 20s again, feeling fresh,

quite blustery conditions during Saturday. It is as we go into

Sunday, a few complications in the forecast, area of low pressure, and

rain spreading ahead of it, remnants of ex-Hurricane Gert, giving us a

few headaches. We feel there will be rain moving into the south and west,

still uncertainty as to the exact position of the rain as it moves in.

Starting of dry and fairly bright, driest weather will be towards the

north-eastern quarter of the UK. As that low pressure system moves away,

we will get a brief warm spell, coming in from the south, tropical

air losing in. Will not affect northern areas, mainly towards the

south. On Monday, bright and sunny spells, temperatures potentially up

to 25 Celsius, further north, a bit cooler, outbreaks of rain across

Scotland and also Northern Ireland. A few complications in the forecast

as we go into Sunday but Saturday, largely fine and dry, more details

available on the website. Spanish police are investigating

whether the van attack here yesterday, in which 13 people

were killed, was linked to another incident overnight

in the resort of Cambrils. That resources around 100 kilometres

from here. Within 30 seconds police turned up,

they drew their guns and were shouting something to the guy, next

thing I know shots were fired. He went down.

People from 24 countries were caught up in the attack on Las Ramblas

yesterday afternoon - 80 people are injured some seriously

after a van ploughed through pedestrians on the famous

tourist landmark in the centre of Barcelona.

for their lives into shops and bars as the driver of the van

caught up in both incidents and bringing you all

Welcome to BBC News, we are living the heart of Barcelona, Las Ramblas

just there me is where this horrific attack unfolded just before 5pm

local time yesterday afternoon. A white van set off from here,

Catalonia Square, Placa de Catalunya, drove at high speeds and

Las Ramblas, veering from side to side, left to right, swerving

deliberately at pedestrians, leaving 13 dead, injuring dozens more, many

of them seriously injured and still in hospital, some critically

injured. We're hearing there are casualties

from some 24 different countries. Three people have been arrested in

connection with the attack in Barcelona. Police say there may have

been a terror cell other 28 people behind the plot to attack this

tourist destination right in the heart of Barcelona -- a terror cell

of eight people. This destination attracts tourists from right around

the world and it was packed with people when the van drove into

pedestrians. In the early hours of this morning a

second attack, this time in the seaside town of Cambrils around 100

kilometres from here. There, a car was used to drive into pedestrians.

Seven people injured, including a police officer, but this time armed

police opened fire very quickly and shot dead five terror suspects. Some

of that action by the police was filmed on camera. Five suspected

terror suspects have been killed by the police in Cambrils. This report

from Sarah Corker. In the early hours of Friday

morning, a dramatic shoot out The authorities say five suspected

terrorists were shot dead by police. Officers opened fire

after the attackers drove The next thing, police were right

there, it was really quick. Then they started shouting

at the guy and the next thing, The incident in Cambrils

is being linked to the deadly van attack in the centre of Barcelona,

less than 100 miles away. Hundreds of holiday-makers, locals,

shoppers ran for their lives. This white van was used

as a weapon to kill. For half a kilometre,

the vehicle ploughed into pedestrians on Spain's

most famous boulevard. I saw a white van with

the side door open. Whether it was police

or from the van, I don't know, We ran into the Burger

King to get shelter. Police released this photo

of Driss Oukabir, born in Morroco, whose documents were used to rent

the van, but latest reports suggest he told police his

passport was stolen. The so-called Islamic State group

said it was behind the attack. TRANSLATION: I want to express

the solidarity of the whole of Spain with Barcelona,

today hit by jihadist terrorism, like other cities around

the world before it. The authorities are now linking

the attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils with an explosion

on Wednesday in the town of Alcanar. Police believe suspects at the house

were preparing explosives. And, as people anxiously wait

for news of loved ones, the authorities have warned

the number of dead may rise. Lets tell you more about the

dramatic shoot out in Cambrils, around 100 kilometres from here,

when the car was driven at pedestrians, injured seven,

including a police officer. Armed police opened fire and shot dead

five terror suspects. A man from Wolverhampton in Britain was

actually filming at the time of the police action on his camera phone,

this is what he filmed. This was Fitzroy Davis, who filmed some of

the police action in Cambrils. That is what happened overnight in

Cambrils. Let's focus on what happened in Barcelona, is Las

Ramblas. I can speak to one eyewitness, Eneko De Marcus. What

happened? I was having a coffee, minority. It was about 4:30pm, I

waited for a while. At around five minutes to five there was a noise,

the next thing you know from the bottom of that street there was a

stampede of thousands of people running and running and running. It

was a dead giveaway that something was wrong, so we turned the corner

where the restaurant is and we ran inside the restaurant, they locked

us in, we were locked in for around three and a half hours, no one gave

this any information. Things were filtering through about taking

hostages in a restaurant and Las Ramblas, but we were just inside, it

was chaos, children and women crying. I was quite relaxed because

I had not seen the van. But after three and a half hours they letters

go and the police Major 's walk up the street -- made us walk up the

street, then there was another bank, a noise, police started running in

and everyone panicked. There was another stampede, I was not going to

stick around, I ran for my wife. It was chaos. How long was it before

you realised it was a terror attack, a vehicle had been used and people

were killed? We did not know if it was terrorism or just someone who

was crazy or something, it took about half an hour to figure out

what was going on. We were asking people who run into the restaurant

what was happening, they did not know, they were in shock, crying. It

was quite harrowing, to be honest. People terrified, running for their

lives? Yes, pandemonium on the streets. The police cordoned off

everything, it was impossible to get home. People who live in this area

were just stuck. If you wanted to get to your safe place at home you

had to stick around and hope the suspects or whatever were

apprehended without problems. You were born and raised in Britain but

live in Barcelona now, what has an attack like that is done to

Barcelona? It seems to be people getting back to life as normal now?

I went through the ones in London when I was young. Yeah, it is very

important we get back to the normal routine, people going back to doing

what they do. It is quite sad for me, honestly, this is an isolated

incident. In other places around the world it is happening daily. We need

to help them all, you know? It happens once you, it is small scale

and we are all panicking. It is happening in places around the world

at ten or 20 times the scale. It is important we get back to normal

routine, do the things we do, go to places we go. Barcelona is an

amazing city, please come and visit, it is beautiful. Las Ramblas is such

a tourist destination, anybody who comes to Barcelona comes here?

Everyone and anyone. My fronts were here two days ago, they left on

Sunday and I am so glad they ROK -- my fronts were here. It is the place

to be, iconic streets, people selling, vibrant and alive. It is a

shock it has happened. We're hearing there might have been a terror cell

of maybe eight people who planned this, it was obviously an attack on

tourists, people not only from this part of the world the right around

the world to come to Barcelona and see what a beautiful city it is? It

is just an attack on freedom and people who want to live happy lives,

I guess. It is important we have compassion for people around the

world. Not everyone is bad. It is important we carry on and keep on

living the way we live. 13 killed, dozens injured, what are your

feelings about the people who did this? Devastating. How are you going

to feel? It is on my street, where I live. I walk the street every day, I

feel happy, vibrant. It is devastating. Very sad. And you will

just be carrying on with life as normal? Of course. It is a bit of a

shock, you don't expect it on your doorstep, but if you don't, what are

you going to do? Stay at home all day like a recluse? You had to keep

else who witnessed what happened in Las Ramblas yesterday. Scott

Strudwick can join us. Can you tell us what you saw? Show. We were in

the main Placa de Catalunya. We came out from a large department store to

be greeted by police sirens. We were heading towards Las Ramblas to then

catch bus back, at which point we suddenly noticed lots of people

running in the opposite direction. Then police were pushing us away,

pushing people into shops and trying to close the doors behind them. We

were tied into the large department store that we were originally in.

That is where from our point of view we did not know what was going on at

that point, once we got back into the shop, shortly after that we had

our scariest moment. We were on the second floor of the shop and people

came running through the shop, we later found that there was a rumour

that had been gunfire and potentially a terrorist in the shop,

which turned out to be false but they did not know that at that

point. We did not really understand what was happening because we did

not speak Spanish, which is probably a blessing in hindsight. The panic

was quite infectious, we were driven back to the back of the shop. We

went into a hairdressing salon and were put into a small storage

cupboard at the end, many people were crammed in. It was very

frightening, lots of people crying and upset. We were very confused. We

had two young children, it was very frightening for them.

How long was it before you realised exactly what was unfolding, that

this was a terror attack? We did not know at that point, we obviously had

strong suspicions. At that time we knew it must be some sort of

terrorist attack but we did not have details. We were let out of the

room, that was still confusion, we were assured out of an emergency ex

back in an emergency exit, then they locked the shop down. At that point

we could use our phones to get onto social media etc and had a better

understanding of what was going on, but as you can appreciate even at

that point the details were sketchy and false details were coming

through as well. Obviously all the people around you

were absolutely terrified? Yes, initially particularly after the

incident in the shop lots of very upset people were crying, things

calm down. To be fair to the people in the shop they were very good at

trying to calm people and reassure them, they had locked down the shop,

but it was still a very tense and setting environment. Looking out of

the windows there was nobody in the street about point, just police. We

did not have enough information to know what was going on at that

point, especially as we did not speak Spanish. We went to look at

the television, there were lots of pictures and we started to

understand what was going on. What was worrying was that at that point

there was potentially a news announcement that there were two

gunman that had stormed a restaurant, so you were really

worried about how many potential terrorists were still milling around

and whatever additional attacks might happen.

What are your plans? What would you do? Are you staying in Barcelona?

Yes. After we were let out of the hotel we were ushered away by police

quite quickly away from the main zone. The problem for us is that we

did not know where we were. There were lots of people milling around,

it took a good number of hours to eventually get into a taxi and get

back to our hotel. Things very much calm down when we were at the hotel,

they were very good and laid on extra restaurant space because lots

of people were not staying in the hotel. As this morning we have been

looking at the new -- news and seen that have been further attacks and

more going on. Police are still finding stuff. That said, life seems

to be returning to normal, I think people are fairly resilient. These

sorts of attacks, people do not want them to get the better of them, they

are trying to go on. We will be taking advice but our plans are to

do pretty much what we were going to do yesterday, albeit we will be much

more aware. And the thing is where we are now there is a large police

attendance so we are hoping if anything it should make it more

eyewitness, Richard Greg, from Dartford, in England, he was here,

and he was caught up in the effort of what happened at Las Ramblas.

People were running everywhere, we could not get anywhere near the

apartment, which is parallel with where the van ended up, so we made

our way through the back streets, filled with people at that time.

We got onto Las Ramblas and people were running everywhere,

also were in the back streets very quickly.

Las Ramblas has numerous side alley ways, all the way up and down,

literally flooded with police, on foot, on motorcycles,

getting us off the street and clearly looking for someone,

When we got back to our street we could see where the van had

ended, bodies on the floor, we made our way back to our

apartment as quickly as we could, we ended up within the police called

in and could not leave the building, because the market place

where a lot of the armed police were was literally

We stayed in the apartment for two or three hours,

until we got the international news, nothing on the news for about 20

minutes, half an hour, we did not know the severity

of what had happened apart from judging by the numbers of people

running through the streets and the volume of police

and helicopters overhead, so we knew it was fairly serious.

We left the apartment at 9:30pm, to meet friends on the other

side of Barcelona, check they were all OK, the whole city

was fairly quiet, fairly subdued, normally you would expect Barcelona

Obviously everyone is now very on edge.

I spose, if you had been walking down Las Ramblas

a few minutes earlier, you could have been

We would have been where the van ended up had we been

two minutes earlier, that is where we were headed.

We are really grateful that we were just two minutes behind

are you staying, despite what happened?

We are staying until Monday, taking it day by day,

We were freaked out last night, and on edge, we feel

a little bit calmer today, as you have mentioned,

Las Ramblas is getting back to some semblance of normality,

as lots of people down there, stalls opening back up,

we feel fairly reassured by the volume of police,

A little bit shocked, a little bit on edge,

has not really sunk in, the first, sort of ten

minutes after the attack it was all fairly surreal,

half the crowds were running and screaming away, the other half

had no clue what was happening at all, just standing around,

So it was all a bit surreal for the first bit,

and then once it became clear what was happening,

When we saw people on the floor being tended to by emergency

services we suddenly realise the severity of the situation.

We were very concerned last night, until they had arrested anyone,

because we did not know where anybody was, now,

we hear that the driver is probably still not apprehended.

That leaves a little bit of apprehension, worried,

about where we are going to go tonight, what we are going

to do today, we want to stay insecure places.

There has been a string of these vehicle attacks across Europe,

including London, did you realise pretty quickly that

that is probably what it was, when you saw everybody running?

We realised, when the first tourist was shouting out that

people had been hit, we thought perhaps it was just

a tragic car accident, by the time we saw the volume

of police and we could see that there was the van

there and bodies on the floor, we guessed pretty quickly that this

Richard Greg, British eyewitness to what was happening in Barcelona,

from Dartford in Kent, telling us what the saw and heard. These are

life pictures. Flowers and wreaths have been laid there, candles have

been that as well for the people coming, laying flowers, lighting

candles. Standing in silent reflection, to pay their respects,

and think about the 13 who have lost their lives. In that horrific

attack. Dozens and dozens who have been inches from many different

countries, more than 20 different countries, we are hearing. -- who

have been injured. Some of them critically ill in hospital. A

statement we have heard from the Catalan president," we have two

remain an and welcoming society, he said he wanted to appeal for

normality because changing our way of being would be a triumph of

terrorism, and he called for trust and hope in the police forces who

say that they are well prepared. That statement from Carles

Puigdemont. That is a reference to the police action in Cambrils, 100

kilometres from here, seaside town, another terror attack using a

vehicle, driven into pedestrians. Police opened fire very quickly and

shot dead five terror suspects, in Cambrils. That is the latest from

Barcelona. Very shortly there will be a minutes silence, where people

can pay their respects to the dead and remember the dead, a minutes

silence. Flags flying at half-mast, right across Spain, after this

dreadful attack, and in Downing Street, we understand, in

We will have the latest from Barcelona. Bringing back in here,

director of covenant Security and risk management, former member of

the UK national counterterrorism security office, with us throughout

the morning. Security issues arising from this, and protection going

forward, also, lead, the latest from the Spanish authorities, they

believe there may have been eight people involved in a cell that

carried out the attack in Barcelona, in terms of arrests and suspected

attackers dead, three arrests have been made, five are dead, what will

be going on to try to make sure they can piece together the numbers

involved in each separate incident as far as they understand it, and

the figures involved in each one marrying up between different

incidents. There will be a number of actions as part of the initial

investigation, one of the main things is to confirm that if this

was a coordinated cell working together, is that everybody

accounted for? Do we have the three suspects in custody and those that

have been shot, anybody else still out there, potentially the first

driver at Las Ramblas, the five killed later on, or is he still to

be found? That would be part of the initial thing, do we have everybody

caught up in this. At the same time running alongside this, discussing

with colleagues from other countries, information sharing,

trying to get as much information about these individuals as possible,

possibly even confirming their identities, they may not have

paperwork with them, fair bit of work to be going on. As well as

that, looking at overall security within Barcelona and the surviving

areas but also, the frenzied recovery at the seams... Not just

the collection of the vehicles but where it took place, especially with

the second attack, fiercely firearms involved as well. A number of

immediate action. -- obviously firearms involved as well. A name

and a face was put out there pretty quickly, they may have been

involved, because the person that hired the car use his documents,

Driss Oukabir, he handed himself in to police quite quickly, that is

him, he realised his face was in the media, he says he was not involved,

70 miles away, he believed, potentially, his brother had stolen

his documents to hire the van. If that is the case, that seems like an

usual situation, doesn't it, if you want to steal documents to hire a

van, doing it this way has led the police directly back on the

potentially, to the person... Very high risk tactics for them to

undertake, identified at the time as stolen documents, or fiercely, the

plan is there and then, that leads me to think, the incident on

Thursday night disrupted whatever plans they had in place. --

obviously. And this is Plan B. The incident at the house, and this is

Plan B, looking at a vehicle, and looking at Las Ramblas at that time

in the evening. For them, in their eyes, it is a good choice of timing.

What does not quite fit in yet is the timing, 1am, for the second

attack, or was it that they were travelling through to someone else,

1am, using a vehicle, there is not really many around at that time of

day. On that, the Cambrils attack, there was a report that what

happened was that the car was stopped at a police checkpoint, the

police realised there were armed men inside the car, they gave chase, the

car overturned, and presumably in the chase, people were hit, when the

men got out of the car, that was when they were shot dead. But the

reports are also that it was not that way, that there was an attack

underway and the police got involved quite quickly. It is still unclear

exactly what happened, it was an unusual time, early hours of the

morning. Things not quite adding up with the second incident still. The

checkpoint story, would make more sense, in terms of the actual police

response and their timing to it. Obviously, the other account, pure

coincidence Paps, that they happen to attack that area and the police

happened to be there, also significant, when we look at the

footage, the controlled shots fired by the police, not a sporadic

exchange of gunfire, obviously clear time shots in there, completely

different scenario, I would not be surprised if they did appear at a

checkpoint and tried to rush through, hence the immediate

pursuit. Reported that the CIA warned the Spanish authorities two

months ago that Las Ramblas was a target, we don't know how they

responded to the warning but in terms of protecting somewhere like

Las Ramblas, popular areas in any other cities, what can be done? A

couple of interesting points, the CIA sharing information would add up

to some of the initial report, local saying that there had been an

increase in police presence in Las Ramblas over the last week or so,

that adds weight to that account, what is also interesting, on the map

of Las Ramblas, where you see the vehicle enter, in the pedestrian I

would be interested to see what measures are in place to stop

vehicles entering a pedestrian zone. There are plans in place for places

like Oxford Street, do we make it pedestrianised at certain times of

the day, when we have a high volume of footfall. We will never be able

to roll out completely the use of vehicles to attack people, there are

ways to mitigate it but how do we respond, we saw an effective

response yesterday as we did on London Bridge. Thank you very much,

lead, and we will go to the Foreign Office now, our correspondent there,

more than 20 countries citizens caught up in the events in

Barcelona. Any reports yet of any British people involved? The Foreign

Office urgently seeking information, and working with the Spanish local

authorities to try to establish if any British nationals are involved,

we have not been given any information, they have issued

advice, four travelling to and from Barcelona and Cambrils, they say

that if you are in those areas, take care, they also say that you should

follow the advice of local authorities, and if you are safe,

they are urging people to contact family and friends through social

media rather than the helpline that has been issued by Spanish

authorities because they are having some problems with that and

hopefully it will be up and running shortly. It is thought that more

than 12 million British visit Spain throughout the year and because it

is mid-August and summertime, more than a million British people are in

Spain on holiday, most of them in the results around the

Mediterranean, some of them would be in Barcelona or Cambrils.

Is there any updated travel guidance? We have a statement from

British Airways who says customers due to travel to and from Barcelona

in the coming days are being offered a range of options if they want to

bring forward has blown their travel plans. The UK's biggest operator to

Barcelona, easyJet, says any passengers not wishing to travel on

flights to war from Barcelona in the next 48 hours can change their

flights with no charge fee. P ferries say they will monitor the

situation and keep in contact with the Spanish authorities on what they

do. As far as we know there are no black hairy journeys to and from

Barcelona this weekend. Take you very much. -- as far as we know

there are no plan to ferry journeys to and from Barcelona. Just to show

you what is going on behind us and Placa de Catalunya, Catalonia

Square, at the end of Las Ramblas. People are gathering in large

numbers because there will be a minute's silence at the top of the

hour, where people will remember the 13 who lost their lives and the many

dozens who were injured in the van attack as it was driven down Las

Ramblas. There are security checks as they walk in and bag searches,

but I think people from Barcelona and tourists from around the world

who are in this city now wants to come and pay respects to those who

have lost their lives. Also on Las Ramblas, flowers being laid in

memory of the dead, candles being lit, reefs have been laid. Very much

a sombre mood, as you would expect, but the president of Catalonia has

said life is to return to normal to show that terrorism will not be

allowed to succeed and that the terrorists will not win. According

to the authorities here a terror cell odds are made people was behind

the van attack in which the white van was driven from this square half

a kilometre down Las Ramblas at high speed. Weaving in and out of

pedestrians, deliberately swerving into them on the pavements, killing

13 and injuring about 100. Many of them are still in hospital.

Overnight in the town of Cambrils around 100 kilometres from here, a

popular seaside town, there was a second vehicle attack in which a car

was driven up pedestrians as well. Seven were injured. Fitzroy Davis is

a British man from Wolverhampton who was there at the time, this is what

he told me. We were sitting in a bar

by the front, and some girls just ran in, scared,

and then fear on their faces, and so one of the guys

jumped up and had a look, see what was going on, and then

people started running past us, and then one of the guys said,

"Run!" And we came out of the bar

and I was standing on the street, and I got my phone out,

because I saw this guy First, somebody said,

"Call the police." Within 20, 30 seconds,

the police turned up, then they drew their guns,

shouting something to the guy. And then next thing I know

there were shots fired. He went down, and within two

seconds he stood back up, then he stepped over a fence,

then he came walking to the police, he was smiling,

he was laughing at them, and they shot him again

and then he fell down. And people might be amazed that

you would just film that. Were you aware of what was going

to unfold as you started filming? Not until the police turned up,

and it was only when the police turned up with their guns drawn then

I realised, this is serious. And then when the first shots

were fired, in one mind people were shouting me to come on and go,

and in the other mind, the adrenaline was in there

and I thought, I'll just carry Life here in Barcelona, this is the

scene you can see behind me, people in their droves wanting to come to

Placa de Catalunya where the attack began, this is where there would be

a minute's silence in 20 odd minutes' time. A chance for people

to pay their respects, to remember those who lost their lives here

yesterday. Many innocent tourists looking at one of the great tourist

attractions of Barcelona, one of the great tourist attractions of the

world. Anybody who comes to Barcelona wants to come to Las

Ramblas, it was packed yesterday afternoon just before 5pm local time

when the van swerved down Las Ramblas at high speed for about half

a kilometre, ploughing into people. We have been hearing from various

senior politicians in Catalonia and Spain saying life has to return to

normal, terrorism cannot be allowed to win.

We have heard from Francesco Marcus Vasquez, a member of Congress here.

If we are looking for absolute security, it is very difficult to

achieve that. We try to protect ourselves, not only in Spain but in

all of our European countries we have very professional law

enforcement agencies and very professional police officers. And we

cannot get something like absolute security.

It appears that the terror cell, if that's what was, behind this attack

on Las Ramblas, according to the authorities, may have been eight

strong. Eight people in that cell. And another in Cambrils, where there

was a police shoot out yesterday after another vehicle attack, those

five terror suspects killed. If there were a network, if you like,

of one terror cell in Barcelona, another in Cambrils, it seems they

were not at all on the radar of the authorities of the police, and that

will be very worrying. We know there have been three arrests in

connection with the van attack, although the driver of the van that

killed so many people here in Las Ramblas got out of the van and fled

on foot, people hunting for him very hard indeed. Back to you in the

studio, Joanna. More from Ben later. Earlier Ben

spoke to an eyewitness who said he was caught up in the stampede of

people. I was having a coffee, as is my normal routine. It was about

4:30pm, I waited a while. At five minutes to five there was a noise,

the next thing you know, coming from the bottom of the street, a stampede

of thousands of people just running and running and running. Of course,

it was a dead giveaway that something was wrong. We turned the

corner where the restaurant cafe is. We were locked into another cafe for

about three others, no one gave this information. Things were filtering

through about they have taken hostages at another restaurant in

Las Ramblas, it was chaos, children crying, women crying. I was quite

relaxed because obviously I had not seen the van. After three and a half

hours they let us go, the police made us walk past the street that

goes up the street here. As we got to the cordoned off area there was

another band, like a noise, police started running in and everyone

panicked, there was another stampede. At that point I was not

going to stick around, I ran for my life. It was just chaos. How long

was it before you realised it was a terror attack, a vehicle had been

used on people had been killed. Obviously we do not know if it as

terrorism or somebody who is crazy or something. It took about half an

hour to figure out what was going on. We were asking people who ran

into the restaurant we were locked in what was happening, they did not

know, they were in shock and crying. It was quite harrowing, to be

honest. People absolutely terrified, running for their lives? Yes, it was

pandemonium. The police cordoned off everything, it was impossible to get

home. People who lived in this area were just stuck. If you wanted to

get to your safe place at home you had to stick around and hope that

the suspect or whatever were apprehended without problems. I went

to -- I went to the ones in London when I was young, it is important to

get back to the normal routine, people going back to doing what they

do. It is sad for me, honestly, it is an isolated incident but in other

places around the world it happens on a daily basis and we need to help

them more. It happens once here, it is small scale and we are all

panicking, it happens places around the world at ten or 20 times the

scale. It is important to get back to normal routine, keep doing the

things we do, go to the places we go to. Barcelona is an amazing city,

please come and visit, it is beautiful. Las Ramblas is such a

tourist destination, anyone who comes to Barcelona comes here?

Anyone and everyone. My friends are here two days

ago and left on Sunday, I am so glad they are OK. It is the place to be.

Iconic streets, people selling, it is vibrant, it is alive. It is a bit

of a shock that it happened to us. The people behind this, and we are

hearing that might have been a terror cell are eight people, it was

an attack on tourists, not only from this part of the world that right

around the world to come to Barcelona to see what a beautiful

city it is? I guess it is just an attack on freedom and people who

want to live happy lives. It is important we have compassion against

people around the world. Not everyone is bad. It is important we

carry on and keep on living the way we live. 13 people killed, dozens

injured, what are your feelings about those who did this?

Devastating, how are you going to feel? It is on my street where I

live, I walk the street every day and feel happy and vibrant, it is

devastating. Sad, very sad. You will be carrying

on with life as normal now? Of course. The first... It is a bit of

a shock and you do not expect it on your doorstep, but if you don't, are

you going to stay at home all day like a recluse? You have to keep on

living life. One eyewitness talking to Ben

earlier. We have had the name of the first

person named in the attack in Barcelona, 13 killed, the first

person has been named by his company as a victim of the attack. It is the

Italian branch of the company Ton-plus Mac Hardware, saying that

employee Bruno has been killed on Las Ramblas where he was on holiday

with his partner and two children. -- the company Tom's Hard Way.

The Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy Has Announced Three Days Of

Mourning For The Attack. These Are The Latest Pictures That We Have Of

Him. Is obviously having high-level talks in the aftermath of these

three separate but linked attacks, the attack in Barcelona, the

subsequent attack on Cabrillo 's and also the house explosion just about

100 miles away from Barcelona on Wednesday night which is now

believed to be significantly linked to what is unfolded since the house

exploded, the house was completely destroyed in a huge explosion. There

were gas canisters in the house and the authorities now think those gas

canisters were intended for use in Barcelona.

At midday local time there will be a minute's silence in Barcelona to

remember the victims of the attack. These are live pictures from Las

Ramblas now of flowers being laid as people go to Las Ramblas to remember

the victims of the attack yesterday afternoon. Candles being lit and

lots of tributes laid. Las Ramblas returning to being the very busy

thoroughfare that it is. Obviously the mood today is very different,

holiday-makers are out in huge numbers -- were out in huge numbers

yesterday when the band zigzagged along that very popular tourist area

and killed 13 and injured many more. 80 injured in that attack, at least.

They are preparing to remember the victims with a minute's silence at

midday. There are three days of national

mourning in Spain. The Spanish and British flags are being flown at

half-mast in Downing Street. The question is now after the two

vehicle attacks is can they be prevented? In just over a year

Europe has seen seven attacks were vehicles have been used as weapons.

Security correspondent Gordon Corera looks at what the authorities are

doing. A threat, but he talked

of buying guns... And this is where it ended

up, in flames after... Here at Westminster Bridge,

they have installed these barriers to stop vehicles running

into pedestrians on the bridge. But an attacker could just pick

a different crowded place. The authorities are also looking

at things like more checks on people making short notice rentals of vans,

but the problem is, these attacks And with so little planning

required, it can be hard New shock absorbing barriers

like this one shown in a test may But counterterrorism experts

caution they cannot stop Earlier I spoke to an expert on

radicalism and security in Madrid. I asked him how much of a hub

Barcelona is for radicalisation? The main four points, there is a place

in the north of Morocco, Barcelona, Madrid and another city. Barcelona

is properly the second largest city in radicalisation in Spain and in

these last two years we have been suffering a huge amount of

counterterrorism operations. And now one of the rested individuals might

be from one of the cities. We could say that Barcelona is the second

city in radicalisation, probably one of the biggest in the Catalan areas.

Tell us more about the operations in the city. We know that in advance of

this attack there was a warning from the CIA backed Las Ramblas was

potentially a target? What has been going on to try to prevent attacks?

Exactly, from last year, there has been seven operations in the first

half of 2017. We can see an increase in operations by the police,

however, we have not managed to focus on all the radicalisation pubs

in the cities. It is one of the biggest places with Muslim

population. What are the suspicions around how

individuals are radicalised, how it may be operating? Bestial forces are

focused on three main environments, where we can find the radicalisation

processes in Spain, one is the local one, you have to bear in mind, two

factors, that play a very important role in the radicalisation process,

one is the links with family and friends, or religious chief, that

radicalised is, and the other ones are connections with social

patterns. Many of these people travel through

those hubs, Madrid, Barcelona. Most importantly, these cases, online

radicalisation, cyberspace. As we saw yesterday, in Barcelona, and the

attacks, fake explosives that they are wearing, it is something that

you read on Islamist web pages. Message boards. Taking information

from all of those areas. Let's take you live to the Placa de

Catalunya, in Barcelona, it is where a minute 's silence is going to be

held at midday local time, and large number of people gathered to mark

the minute silence, king Philip -- King Philippe and others will be

marking it. And the second incident, in which is five gunmen were shot

dead by the authorities, happened overnight in Cambrils, a town, south

of Barcelona. -- King Felipe. It is thought that a second attack,

potentially along the lines of the Barcelona attack, was aborted.

Security forces intercepted a car that had armed men in it, also

wearing fake suicide belts, it seems, seven injured, seven injured

when that car was driven into them. The car overturned in a police chase

and police shot dead five men from inside that car, also separately

three men in custody after the attack on Barcelona, these attacks

separate but linked. Investigators now trying to work out how many

people were behind these attacks. Eight involved, that is the scene

live in Barcelona, just at the top end of Las Ramblas, Placa de

Catalunya, is where they are preparing to hold a minutes silence.

Also three days of mourning that has been declared by the government of

Catalunya. Scott Strudwick is on holiday, he

ended up on Las Ramblas as the attack began, and he spoke with us a

little earlier. We were in Placa de Catalunya, we came out from a large

department store, to be greeted by police sirens, we were heading

towards us Rambus, to catch the bus back, at which point we noticed lots

of people running in the opposite direction, and then police were

pushing us away, pushing people into shops, trying to close the doors. We

retired into the large department store that we were originally in. We

did not know what was going on at that point, but once we got back

into the shop, shortly after that is where we had the scariest moment, on

the seventh floor of the shop, people came running through the

shop, we later found out there was a rumour that there had been gunfire

in a shop, turned out to be full. We did not speak Spanish, that was

probably a blessing in hindsight, the panic was quite infectious. We

were driven to the back of the shop, then the hairdressing salon, and we

were put into a small hairdressing closet, a lot of people crying, lots

of people very upset, we were very upset because we did not know what

was going on, it was very frightening for the children we were

with. How long before you realise what was unfolding and this was a

terror attack. We did not know at that point, we had strong

suspicions, after that incident we knew there must be some sort of

terror attack but we did not have any details. There was still

confusion, we were ushered out of the emergency exit and then ushered

back in and then they locked down the shop, we were able to use our

phones at that point, to get onto social media, we had a better

understanding of what was going on. Even at that point, the details were

sketchy. False details coming through. All the people around you

were absolutely terrified. Initially, there was a lot of upset

people, things calmed down, to be fair to the people in the shop, they

were very good at coming people down. They locked down the shop,

very tense and upsetting environment, nobody in the streets

at that time, just some police, we really did not have enough

information to know what was going on at that point, especially since

we did not speak Spanish, we went to the seventh floor, looks at the

television, lots of pictures going on, then we began to understand what

was going on. There was potentially a news announcement that there was

two gunmen. Potential terrorists milling around, additional attacks

might happen. What are your plans now, are you staying in Barcelona?

After we were let out of the hotel, we were ushered away by police,

quite quickly, away from the main zone, the problem was, we did not

know where we were, a lot of people milling around, took us a good

number of hours, to eventually get into a taxi and get back to a hotel.

Then things calmed down, the hotel was very good, laying on extra

restaurant space, because a lot of people were staying in the hotel. As

of this morning, we have been looking on the news, further

attacks, police still finding stuff, that said, looking out at this

stage, life seems to be returning to normal, people are fairly resilient,

this sort of attack, people do not want them to get the better of them.

We will be taking advice but our plan will be to do what we were

going to do yesterday, albeit, we will be much more aware. The thing

is, where we are now, there is a large police attendance, so we are

hoping, if anything, it should make it more secure. That is one
