Norway is engulfed in grief as the number of dead approaches 100.

:00:18.:00:22.

As victims of the attacks are remembered, the Prime Minister

:00:23.:00:29.

speaks of a national tragedy. There are emotional scenes as Norway's

:00:29.:00:36.

King and Queen join in the sorrow. More emerges about the gunman's

:00:36.:00:42.

beliefs and the way he targeted his victims. People ran from him. He

:00:42.:00:49.

walked. Didn't run. He walked slowly. He thought, "You may run,

:00:49.:00:56.

you can't hide." He yelled, "This is the day you're going to die."

:00:56.:01:02.

We'll have the latest from Oslo. Also on the programme: Tributes to

:01:02.:01:08.

Amy Winehouse. Her family say she leaves a gaping hole in their lives.

:01:08.:01:12.

And Lewis Hamilton produces a momental drive to take his second

:01:12.:01:18.

win of the season in the German Grand Prix.

:01:18.:01:23.

-- monumental drive to take his second win of the season in the

:01:23.:01:32.

German Grand Prix. Good evening memorial services have

:01:32.:01:36.

taken place across Norway to remember the 98 people who are

:01:36.:01:41.

thought to have died in Friday's car bomb and mass shooting T man

:01:41.:01:45.

who has been charged has told police he acted alone. Let's join

:01:45.:01:49.

Jon Sopel, who is in Oslo this evening.

:01:49.:01:54.

Thank you very much indeed. It has been raining none stop here this

:01:54.:01:59.

afternoon. Beyond that a sea of umbrellas and raincoats. There is

:01:59.:02:05.

now a carpet of flowers, of candles, of flags. Earlier, as that memorial

:02:05.:02:09.

service ended, there was almost unbearable grief as many of the

:02:09.:02:15.

survivors from Utoeya Island gathered by the flowers and hugged

:02:15.:02:19.

each other and wailed. That sound echoed around the square, filled

:02:19.:02:24.

with people who wanted to lend support to those who were suffering.

:02:24.:02:30.

Our first report is from our correspondent Steve Rosenberg. This

:02:30.:02:34.

is a nation united in grief and still in shock.

:02:34.:02:38.

At Oslo Cathedral today they prayed for the victims of Friday's terror

:02:38.:02:44.

attacks, the bomb blast and the youth camp massacre. In the

:02:44.:02:52.

congregation and moved to tears were the King and Queen of Norway.

:02:52.:02:55.

Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg said he knew many of the victims

:02:55.:03:03.

personally. Each and every one of those who has gone, is a tragedy,

:03:03.:03:08.

he said. Together, it amounts to a national

:03:08.:03:16.

tragedy. It's not just the scale of the

:03:16.:03:21.

crime that has shaken Norway, it's the realisation that it was a

:03:21.:03:26.

Norwegian citizen who did the killing. Outside the cathedral were

:03:26.:03:31.

some of those who'd survived the shooting on the island. It was like,

:03:31.:03:39.

I have no words, the feeling that you were going to die and the fear

:03:39.:03:47.

that I heard so many shots of this gun. He never stopped shooting.

:03:47.:03:50.

gunman, Anders Behring Breivik shot and injured Adrian Pracon, a

:03:50.:03:54.

tkwrouth leader at the camp, -- youth leader at the camp, but he

:03:54.:04:02.

managed to escape. He pointed the machine gun at me. I begged him,

:04:02.:04:07.

"Please don't kill me. Stop." I don't know if he had some sympathy

:04:07.:04:11.

or just couldn't see the pleasure of killing one person instead of a

:04:11.:04:18.

group of people. He spared me that. Away from Oslo, this is the lake

:04:18.:04:22.

where the shooting happened. We were taken to the scene of the

:04:22.:04:29.

attack. We spotted a team of drivers, a -- divers, a grime sign

:04:29.:04:34.

there could be more victims. We approached 100 metres of what had

:04:34.:04:38.

been a holiday camp. Some people tried to hide behind buildings,

:04:38.:04:44.

only to be discovered and killed. Some of the bodies of the victims

:04:44.:04:48.

are still here, that is because the police want to build up a detailed

:04:48.:04:53.

picture of the gunman's movements. A police boat signalled we'd come

:04:54.:05:01.

too close, it was time to leave. On the island opposite we met this man,

:05:01.:05:06.

who was returning to his holiday cottage. When he heard the shooting

:05:06.:05:11.

he took his old boat and sailed to the camp to rescue people. He was

:05:11.:05:16.

there before the police. I saw people on the shore of Utoeya

:05:16.:05:20.

waving at us. We went in there. went to the island when the gunman

:05:20.:05:24.

was still at large? We thought about that later. He was at large

:05:24.:05:32.

at the time we were there. We didn't think about that. It's one

:05:32.:05:42.

story of heroism, among so many nightmares.

:05:42.:05:47.

Well, Anders Behring Breivik, the man in police custody has admitted

:05:47.:05:52.

the bombing in Oslo and the island shootings. He said he believed the

:05:52.:05:55.

attacks were gruesome, but necessary. More has been emerging

:05:55.:05:59.

throughout the day of the political iedloling that drove him to kill so

:05:59.:06:07.

many. Until 48 hours ago, even in Norway

:06:07.:06:10.

few people had heard of Anders Behring Breivik. Today, his is one

:06:10.:06:17.

of the most infamous faces in the world. The face of a man who wanted

:06:17.:06:22.

to transform society and whose chosen method was mass murder. His

:06:22.:06:29.

lawyer has been on Norwegian television to explain his motives.

:06:29.:06:31.

TRANSLATION: What he said is he wanted a change of society and this

:06:31.:06:37.

in his view, in his head must happen through a revolution. Just

:06:37.:06:42.

before the attacks Anders Behring Breivik posted a 1500-page

:06:42.:06:52.
:06:52.:07:11.

Within hours the car bomb had exploded in Oslo. Then came the

:07:11.:07:16.

rampage through the summer camp by a gunman who said he wanted to

:07:16.:07:20.

bring about the foremost conservative revolutionary movement

:07:20.:07:24.

in Western Europe. What people here are struggling to comprehend is

:07:24.:07:29.

that Anders Behring Breivik was prepared to put his extremist

:07:29.:07:33.

ideology into practise with such murderous consequences, that he

:07:33.:07:36.

could come to a tranquil setting like this, for example, and not

:07:36.:07:41.

only start shooting but carry on shueting for an hour and a --

:07:41.:07:48.

shooting for an hour-and-a-half until nearly 100 of his countrymen

:07:48.:07:53.

were dead. He rented this farm. Bags of fertiliser, which can be

:07:54.:08:00.

used to make bombs were found piled up here.

:08:00.:08:05.

He didn't farm the land properly, says a neighbour. He received a lot

:08:05.:08:09.

of fertiliser, but had not used all of it on the land. After the

:08:09.:08:14.

attacks more images were found on the internet. One showed him in a

:08:14.:08:19.

wetsuit brandishing a weapon. It appears the warning signs had been

:08:19.:08:28.

there, but no-one spotted them. And tomorrow promises to be another

:08:28.:08:32.

uncomfortable day for Norwegians because Breivik has promised he

:08:32.:08:37.

will explain something that most Norwegians think is totally

:08:37.:08:42.

inexplicable. Jon, you have heard so many different voices in Oslo,

:08:42.:08:45.

is there something in particular that people are focusing on as they

:08:45.:08:51.

try to make sense of this? thing which has struck me,,

:08:51.:08:57.

speaking to different people from different walks of life is coming

:08:57.:09:01.

together in the face of such extraordinary adversity. If you

:09:01.:09:06.

look at the people behind me, all different age groups, different

:09:06.:09:10.

nationalities, different religions. People coming over to us saying, "I

:09:10.:09:20.

am a Muslim, I am standing here as a Norwegian." Norway has until...

:09:20.:09:25.

Been seen as a happy, outward looking, multi-cultural society.

:09:25.:09:28.

That is something the man accused said he wants to destroy. The

:09:28.:09:32.

response of these people is he's not going to be allowed to do it.

:09:32.:09:36.

Thank you. In other news, the Business

:09:36.:09:40.

Secretary has blamed what he called right wing nutters in the United

:09:40.:09:43.

States for refusing to reach a compromise over its debt crisis.

:09:43.:09:47.

Speaking on BBC One this morning, Mr Cable said the issue was a

:09:47.:09:51.

bigger risk to the global economy than the problems in the eurozone.

:09:51.:09:56.

Well, let's get the latest between Republicans and Democrats in

:09:56.:10:02.

Washington. Is there any sign they are edging close to a deal? Well,

:10:02.:10:05.

Michelle, President Obama's officials have been out on the

:10:05.:10:09.

television talk shows saying they hope it is posstobl do a deal by

:10:09.:10:15.

the time -- possible to do a deal by the time Asian markets open in

:10:15.:10:20.

seven hours' time. Many are getting rattled. This is like a couple

:10:20.:10:25.

Maxing out on their joint credit card. Where they need to

:10:25.:10:29.

temporarily increase borrowing limits to sort out their financial

:10:29.:10:33.

problems. This was an unlikely couple who never agreed on much.

:10:33.:10:37.

President Obama and his Democrats say there has to be a mixture of

:10:37.:10:42.

spending cuts and tax increases. The Republican opponents, including

:10:42.:10:46.

a hard-line element say they will only expect -- accept spending cuts.

:10:46.:10:51.

If they cannot agree in a week's time, no-one is sure what will

:10:51.:10:55.

happen, but it could lead to the world tipping back into recession.

:10:55.:11:00.

Thank you. Meanwhile, in Madrid thousands have

:11:00.:11:06.

gathered to protest against Spanish Government's austerity cuts. Many

:11:06.:11:09.

calling themselves The Indignants had marched for weeks to get to the

:11:09.:11:12.

capital. They are angry at how the Government plans to reduce Spain's

:11:12.:11:17.

deficit. The country has the highest rate of unemployment in the

:11:17.:11:20.

eurozone. The family of Amy Winehouse say they have been left

:11:20.:11:24.

bereft by the young singer's sudden death. The 27-year-old was found

:11:24.:11:27.

dead at her home in London yesterday afternoon. It is still

:11:27.:11:37.
:11:37.:11:37.

not known how she died. Those utterly distinctive coal-rimed eyes,

:11:37.:11:41.

Nestleed in what has become a shrine to Amy Winehouse. The hope

:11:41.:11:48.

had been this would be the summer of her come-back tour. But after

:11:48.:11:52.

this chaotic performance in Serbia, it was clear she wasn't fit to

:11:52.:11:56.

perform. There was no sense of crisis, her father, who was a close

:11:56.:11:59.

presence during her many ups and downs had been in New York when he

:12:00.:12:03.

heard the news. Today, he returned to London. As

:12:04.:12:08.

you can see, there are hundreds now gathered outside his daughter's

:12:08.:12:12.

home paying their last respects. The family issued a brief statement,

:12:12.:12:22.
:12:22.:12:32.

Among the many people who tried to help during her years of addiction,

:12:32.:12:36.

there was praise for what they had done, the support she had received

:12:36.:12:42.

from her father. He really tried to do everything possible and the

:12:42.:12:46.

record company did too. I worked with Ray, her manager and others

:12:46.:12:50.

around her. They couldn't have done more to help her. The death though

:12:50.:12:54.

is still unexplained. An examination will be carried out

:12:54.:12:58.

this week. For the fans, the focus was the loss of the voice, the

:12:58.:13:08.

talent, a life ended at just 27. Let's turn to a busy day in sports

:13:08.:13:15.

news now. Lewis Hamilton has won the German Grand Prix ahead of

:13:15.:13:18.

Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber. Sebastian Vettel failed to finish

:13:18.:13:23.

on the podium for the first time this season. But he still leads the

:13:23.:13:32.

Races. Lewis Hamilton appeared to be falling out of love with McLaren

:13:32.:13:35.

this season. He complained they couldn't give him a good enough

:13:35.:13:39.

challenge for honours. He was accused of flirting the Red Bull

:13:39.:13:45.

team. That all changed this weekend. He said the qualifying lap was one

:13:45.:13:50.

of his best ever. His start from second on the grid was pretty good

:13:50.:13:54.

too. He used all his giel to stay ahead

:13:54.:13:58.

of Mark Webber. Meanwhile, world champion Sebastian

:13:58.:14:01.

Vettel was having a very rare bad day.

:14:01.:14:05.

First Fernando Alonso passed him with ease, then this put pay to any

:14:05.:14:11.

chance of victory in front of his home fans. A fourth place finish

:14:11.:14:15.

his -- is his worst result this season. Hamilton and Webber fought

:14:15.:14:20.

it out for victory and swapped the lead around the pit swaps. Just to

:14:20.:14:23.

spice things up, Alonso was getting into the mix. Hamilton got the

:14:23.:14:30.

better of him in the end. His McLaren team-mate was disappointed

:14:30.:14:36.

after being forced to retire for the second race in a row. Webber

:14:36.:14:40.

handed victory to Hamilton by four seconds from Alonso. The love

:14:40.:14:45.

affair was rekindled. Hamilton says it was one of his

:14:45.:14:50.

best ever races. It may be too little, too late for

:14:50.:14:54.

his hopes of winning a second world title. Despite the victory moving

:14:54.:14:59.

him up to third in the Drivers's Championship, he trails Vettel by

:14:59.:15:05.

83 2 points. -- 82 points. Mark Cavendish is the

:15:05.:15:10.

first British rider to claim the green sprint Jersey at the Tour de

:15:10.:15:13.

France. After three gruelling weeks of

:15:13.:15:17.

racing, he crossed the line ahead of the race on the Champs-Elysees

:15:17.:15:21.

to claim his fifth stage win of this year's tour and his place on

:15:21.:15:25.

the podium. Cadel Evans was the first

:15:25.:15:30.

Australian to take the overall title and the famous yellow Jersey.

:15:30.:15:36.

England have set India a target of 458 to win the first Test at Lords,

:15:36.:15:45.

despite a batting collapse. Ishant Sharma led the Indian charge. A

:15:45.:15:51.

century from Matt Prior and 74 from Stuart Broad left India with an

:15:51.:15:55.

improbable target for victory on the final day. Celtic have their

:15:55.:16:00.

Scottish Premier League campaign off to a winning start. They beat

:16:00.:16:04.
