Thousands occupy central Cairo once again after a weekend of violent

:00:08.:00:14.

clashes. Several deaths are reported as the

:00:14.:00:17.

security forces try to evict protestors angry at the slow pace

:00:17.:00:24.

of change in Egypt. We didn't expect that we will

:00:24.:00:28.

return to the same place we used to work in January against the former

:00:29.:00:34.

regime and fighting. Nothing changed.

:00:34.:00:37.

In Libya, a captured Saif Gaddafi appears on television saying he is

:00:37.:00:44.

being treated well. Spain's Conservatives celebrate a

landslide victory in the country's general election.

Chelsea to grab victory for Good evening.

:01:20.:01:23.

Thousands of protestors remain on the streets of the Egyptian capital

:01:23.:01:26.

Cairo tonight after a weekend of violent clashes. At least seven

:01:26.:01:28.

people have been killed today and hundreds injured. Police used tear

:01:28.:01:32.

gas and rubber bullets to try to disperse the crowds. The Army was

:01:32.:01:35.

also brought in and for a time managed to regain control of Tahrir

:01:35.:01:43.

Square. Our correspondent Jon Leyne Jon.

:01:43.:01:48.

What we are witnessing here is an outpoint of fury against Egypt's

:01:48.:01:51.

military rulers. The people are angry at the way they have been

:01:51.:01:54.

running the country. They are angry about their plans for the future

:01:54.:01:58.

and they are furious about the way they have been brutally treating

:01:58.:02:02.

the demonstration. Today, after a day of violent

:02:02.:02:12.
:02:12.:02:12.

confrontations, the protesters are They are already calling it the

:02:12.:02:16.

second revolution. These Egyptians have lost patients with the

:02:16.:02:21.

military rulers who took over from Hosni Mubarek. So it is back to a

:02:21.:02:27.

battle for the streets. For a day-and-a-half, the police

:02:27.:02:31.

have been firing volley after volley of tear gas, sending the

:02:31.:02:36.

protesters scurring for cover. But time and again the demonstrators

:02:36.:02:41.

regained their ground. This is the front-line, the police over there

:02:41.:02:45.

are protecting the Interior Ministry and the protesters are

:02:45.:02:48.

battling it out. The air is thick with tear gas. We thought we had

:02:49.:02:53.

seen an end to this, with the end of Hosni Mubarek's rule, but this

:02:53.:03:00.

crowd is as angry as I have seen them in angry. A a fleet of

:03:00.:03:04.

motorcycles rush the injured into a hospital. They are treating

:03:04.:03:08.

suffocation from tear gas and gunshot wounds. The same doctors in

:03:08.:03:12.

the same space they used back when they were fighting Hosni Mubarek's

:03:12.:03:15.

forces. We were so proud of our Army and so

:03:16.:03:19.

proud of our revolution. We didn't expect that we will return to the

:03:19.:03:24.

same place we used to work in January against the former regime

:03:24.:03:27.

and fighting against the same regime. Nothing changed. All the

:03:28.:03:32.

time the crowds were flooding back into Tahrir Square.

:03:32.:03:35.

They are re-establishing the old regime and we don't want the old

:03:35.:03:40.

regime. We don't want the generals of Mubarek. We did a revolution and

:03:40.:03:47.

we are continuing it. Late in the day, the Army came in

:03:47.:03:51.

to reinforce the police. They moved back into Tahrir Square taking

:03:51.:03:57.

control sometimes brutally. In one corner, protesters knelt to

:03:57.:04:06.

pray. A guess fewer of de-- des ture of defiance the soldiers

:04:06.:04:12.

respected. Wung again Wung once again the protesters swarmed back.

:04:12.:04:15.

Tonight, there are thousands occupying the square with more

:04:15.:04:18.

arriving all the time. They are in the most direct confrontation with

:04:18.:04:23.

the military, who claim still to be defending the revolution.

:04:23.:04:28.

There is no sign how the military can restore the stability that most

:04:28.:04:36.

Egyptians want above all. The big question now, of course, is

:04:36.:04:42.

whether elections due in eight days time can go ahead. The military say

:04:42.:04:46.

they are determined they will, but there must be questions about

:04:46.:04:51.

whether they can provide the security. Has the Egyptian Army

:04:51.:04:57.

finally lost the trust of the In Libya, Colonel Gaddafi's

:04:57.:05:00.

captured son, Saif, has been seen on television saying that he is

:05:00.:05:03.

been treated well. In a pre- recorded video message given to an

:05:03.:05:06.

Arabic TV station, he says there are no problems and he expects to

:05:06.:05:11.

have an operation on an injured hand. His captors say they want to

:05:11.:05:14.

keep him in the Libyan town of Zintan for the time being. Our

:05:14.:05:16.

correspondent Caroline Hawley has travelled there and has just sent

:05:16.:05:26.

High in Libya's western mountains, we headed for the town of Zintan.

:05:26.:05:32.

Somewhere here is Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi. Local officials won't say

:05:32.:05:37.

where, only that he is being held in a Private home and is well

:05:37.:05:41.

guarded. Pictures released today show Saif Al-Islam after his

:05:41.:05:46.

capture. The man who Libyans see as the black box of Colonel Gaddafi's

:05:46.:05:49.

regime, no doubt relieved to be alive after what happened to his

:05:49.:05:54.

father. We have been told he asked for shaving foam to remove the

:05:54.:05:58.

beard he grew on the run. That request has been granted. Though he

:05:58.:06:03.

has not been allowed the mobile phone he also asked for. But he has

:06:03.:06:08.

seen a doctor for the injuries to his hand, he says, he sustained in

:06:08.:06:18.
:06:18.:06:19.

a NATO raid. TRANSLATION: During the raid 26

:06:19.:06:21.

young martyrs were killed by the crusaders attack and many were

:06:21.:06:24.

badly injured. We were in the company of my brothers and comrades.

:06:24.:06:26.

We were conferring, talking and discussing issues when the raid

:06:26.:06:30.

took place. No mistaking the satisfaction of

:06:30.:06:33.

the men who caught him. The commander involved told us that

:06:33.:06:38.

Saif Al-Islam had two guns and a rifle on him, but he hadn't had the

:06:38.:06:48.
:06:48.:06:48.

chance to use them. TRANSLATION: He acted at first as

:06:48.:06:51.

if he was still in power, but maybe there was fear because he asked me

:06:51.:06:54.

to shoot him dead. I refused. What happens to Saif Al-Islam now?

:06:54.:06:57.

The authorities here say they will co-operate with the International

:06:57.:07:01.

Criminal Court, but he won't find a Libyan in Zintan who thinks he

:07:01.:07:06.

shouldn't be tried right here in the town whose militiaMencap tured

:07:06.:07:14.

him. They want to see him in court in the capital and how Saif Al-

:07:14.:07:23.

Islam is treated now will be a test The Arab League has rejected Syrian

:07:23.:07:26.

demands to alter plans to send observers into the country so they

:07:26.:07:28.

can monitor ongoing clashes between protestors and government forces.

:07:28.:07:31.

There has been further violence in Syria over the weekend, but

:07:31.:07:34.

President Assad says he won't bow to international pressure to end

:07:34.:07:42.

his regime's crackdown. We are not talking about the most peaceful

:07:42.:07:45.

demonstrations. We are talking about militants. Whenever you have

:07:45.:07:49.

militants, you have killing. So the role of the Government is to fight

:07:49.:07:53.

fight those militants in order to restore the stability and to

:07:53.:07:56.

protect the civilians. With me now to discuss these

:07:56.:07:59.

various developments in the Middle East, I'm joined now by John

:07:59.:08:04.

Simpson. Let's start with Syria, Jon. President Assad is sounding

:08:04.:08:07.

defiant, but can he really keep that up in the face of the

:08:07.:08:11.

pressure? It is not clear whether he understands what is happening in

:08:11.:08:14.

his own country. The country is clearly on the edge of civil war,

:08:14.:08:19.

if it isn't starting to topple over into it. He understands the dangers

:08:19.:08:27.

that this presents to a country which is so separated in terms of

:08:27.:08:30.

the ethnic make-up of the country and religious and so forth make-up

:08:30.:08:34.

of it, but he doesn't seem to understand who it is that's doing

:08:34.:08:40.

the fighting. My guess is that he has not himself, got the toughness

:08:40.:08:44.

to really stick this out, but he has got some quite unpleasant

:08:44.:08:49.

people in his Government who may very well want to continue.

:08:49.:08:53.

As we look at the news tonne, it is Syria, it is Libya, where the

:08:53.:08:58.

elections are a long way away and if we look at Egypt, we have

:08:58.:09:01.

protesters occupying Tahrir Square again? Egypt is the serious one at

:09:01.:09:05.

the moment, but Syria I'm sure in the coming days will become the

:09:05.:09:12.

important one, but what's happened in Egypt is that the Arab Spring

:09:12.:09:18.

didn't get beyond February with the fall of President Mubarak. After

:09:18.:09:23.

that, well pretty much the same set-up remained, absolutely fixed

:09:23.:09:28.

with the military in full command. What is causing these

:09:28.:09:34.

demonstrations at the moment is the military's determination to try to

:09:34.:09:39.

get a control over the constitution and people are determined that that

:09:39.:09:43.

should not happen. Who is going to win? It is still very difficult to

:09:43.:09:47.

say. Thank you.

:09:47.:09:49.

A soldier from the 1st Battalion The Princess of Wales's Royal

:09:49.:09:52.

Regiment has been killed by a roadside explosion in Afghanistan.

:09:52.:09:55.

He was on patrol in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Central Helmand.

:09:55.:10:01.

His family have been informed. Conservatives in Spain are

:10:01.:10:06.

celebrating a landslide victory in today's national elections. With

:10:06.:10:08.

three quarters of votes counted, the right-of-centre Popular Party

:10:08.:10:11.

has already obtained a majority in the lower house of parliament. Top

:10:12.:10:19.

of the new government's agenda will be Spain's faltering economy. Live

:10:19.:10:24.

now to Gavin Hewitt in Madrid. you can probably see and hear,

:10:24.:10:30.

large crowds are still standing outside the People's Party

:10:30.:10:33.

headquarters. Today, yet another Government in the eurozone became a

:10:33.:10:38.

victim of that crisis and lost power and for the right here in

:10:38.:10:46.

Spain, this has been a truly miss toric victory -- historic victory.

:10:46.:10:51.

The supporters of the centre right People's Party waved their flags

:10:51.:10:54.

and danced and cheered, but it was a muted celebration because the

:10:54.:10:58.

party has promised serious and profound austerity cuts. Spain is

:10:58.:11:03.

at the heart of the eurozone crisis, but tonight, senior party officials

:11:03.:11:08.

were trying to reassure the public. No cuts on pensions. No cuts on

:11:08.:11:12.

healthcare. No cuts on education. We're going to cut where it needs

:11:12.:11:16.

to be cut. REPORTER: Where will the cuts come?

:11:16.:11:21.

On unnecessary spending. The new Prime Minister will be

:11:21.:11:23.

Mariano Rajoy. Voters turned to the Conservatives out of frustration

:11:23.:11:26.

with economic collapse and unemployment, but during the

:11:26.:11:31.

campaign, he didn't provide many details of his plans and the hard

:11:31.:11:35.

part starts now. And this is why. Spain has not

:11:35.:11:42.

recovered from a housing boom which went bust. This is a ghost town,

:11:42.:11:47.

10,000 apartments, completely empty, both the personal and company debt

:11:47.:11:53.

still hangs over the country's banks. In Madrid, this family know

:11:53.:12:02.

all about the fact that five million people here are out of work.

:12:02.:12:11.

The father and son is weary of sending ut out job applications.

:12:11.:12:16.

More than 1,000. How many replies? 10, 15.

:12:16.:12:20.

TRANSLATION: For his generation, it is very bad. It is It is

:12:20.:12:26.

practically a lost generation here in Spain. The Popular Party said

:12:26.:12:31.

tonight, it's priority was creating jobs and cutting the deficit.

:12:31.:12:36.

What impact will more austerity have have on a country with almost

:12:36.:12:39.

no growth and the highest unemployment in the industrialised

:12:39.:12:42.

world. Where will the growth come from to help with their debt

:12:42.:12:48.

burden? Last week, Spain's borrowing costs

:12:48.:12:51.

moved dangerously hype. The first task of this new administration

:12:51.:12:56.

will be to convince the markets it has a convincing plan. The

:12:56.:13:01.

interesting fact is that this country has had spending cuts, for

:13:01.:13:05.

almost two years and almost tonight the voters have given a new

:13:05.:13:09.

Government a mandate for truly radical austerity cuts. It will be

:13:09.:13:17.

interesting to see how that works Thick fog has been causing problems

:13:17.:13:20.

for flights in and out of Heathrow and a number of other regional

:13:20.:13:23.

airports today with dozens of flights cancelled or delayed. Luisa

:13:23.:13:30.

Baldini at Heathrow now. Luisa. How is it looking?

:13:30.:13:34.

Yes, thousands of passengers are facing disruption this evening here

:13:34.:13:39.

at Heathrow just over 100 flights have been cancelled, but the

:13:39.:13:43.

airport has remained open and the majority of flights are operating,

:13:43.:13:48.

there are delays which are going to continue into the night because air

:13:48.:13:52.

traffic controllers have had to reduce the rate at which planes

:13:52.:13:57.

land. At London's City Airport, there have been a few cancellations,

:13:57.:14:00.

but there have been delays and some diversions. There has been

:14:00.:14:05.

disruption also at Leeds Bradford Airport and also Norwich Airport.

:14:05.:14:10.

It is not entirely unusual, there was disruption caused to flights by

:14:10.:14:15.

fog exactly a year ago, but if you are due to fly tonight or in the

:14:15.:14:18.

morning, then you should contact your airline, not only because of

:14:18.:14:23.

the existing disruptions, but because this evening the mefs

:14:24.:14:28.

issued a -- Met Office issued a warning for more dense fog for

:14:28.:14:31.

London, the South East and parts of the Midlands.

:14:31.:14:41.
:14:41.:14:46.

Thank you. The the unions say the Government

:14:46.:14:49.

is still not negotiating properly and until that changes, the strikes

:14:49.:14:53.

will go ahead. Here is Ben Wright.

:14:53.:14:57.

The country's biggest unions with millions of members have voted to

:14:57.:15:01.

strike and NHS workers, civil serveants and teachers are set to

:15:01.:15:03.

join the walkout at the end of the month. They are protesting at

:15:04.:15:06.

Government plans for public sector pensions and this morning, its

:15:06.:15:09.

minister leading negotiations was asked whether the Government's

:15:09.:15:12.

latest offer would be withdrawn if the strike goes ahead.

:15:12.:15:17.

Absolutely. That is within our power to do that. We have made it

:15:17.:15:20.

clear, this is not an unconditional offer and we will have the ability

:15:20.:15:25.

to withdraw it and impose something which will still meet our concerns

:15:25.:15:28.

of protecting lower paid people, of being fairer.

:15:28.:15:31.

In Private, the Government has accepted that this month's strike

:15:31.:15:35.

is likely to happen. It is further industrial action that could derail

:15:35.:15:38.

a deal. Ministers say that the trade unions

:15:38.:15:41.

have jumped the gun by balloting for strikes while talks are

:15:41.:15:45.

continuing, but Government sources stress that a walkout on 30th

:15:45.:15:48.

November will not mean that the latest pension offer is taken off

:15:48.:15:52.

the table. Discussions will continue, but not indefinitely and

:15:52.:15:55.

ministers want an agreement reached by the end of the year.

:15:55.:15:59.

So what is the offer on the table? Well, a particular sticking point

:15:59.:16:03.

is that public sector employees would have to pay more for their

:16:03.:16:06.

pensions. The Government would contribute more as well. Those

:16:06.:16:10.

under 50, would have to work longer before they receive their pension,

:16:10.:16:13.

but those within ten years of retirement would receive the same

:16:13.:16:17.

pension that they currently are due to get. It is this final part of

:16:17.:16:21.

the deal the Government may revise in the event of further strikes.

:16:21.:16:25.

I don't think it is helpful for ministers to be ratcheting up the

:16:25.:16:28.

rhetoric in this way, threatening to withdraw the proposals that are

:16:28.:16:34.

on the table for example. What we need is for ministers to sit down,

:16:34.:16:36.

seriously negotiate on the issues that need to be resolved.

:16:36.:16:40.

The two sides have been sitting down for a year without a

:16:40.:16:44.

breakthrough. In ten-days time we are likely to see the biggest

:16:44.:16:54.
:16:54.:16:58.

Now the sport with Celina Hinchcliffe. Hello. Match Of The

:16:58.:17:01.

Day is on BBC Two now with highlights of today's game. There

:17:01.:17:04.

was only one - Liverpool snatched a late win against Chelsea at

:17:04.:17:07.

Stamford Bridge. It was a former Chelsea player Glen Johnson who

:17:07.:17:09.

scored the winning goal. The 2-1 victory lifts Liverpool level on

:17:09.:17:14.

points with the Londoners. Tim Franks reports. Liverpool and

:17:14.:17:19.

Chelsea have lofty dreams and deep pockets, but niggling seasons. In

:17:20.:17:23.

the first-half, Liverpool sparkled and Chelsea stumbled. John Obi

:17:23.:17:27.

Mikel controlled the ball as if he had fallen out of bed. The

:17:27.:17:31.

Liverpool mid-field pounced, Maxi Rodriguez finished. Child's play.

:17:31.:17:35.

Early in the second half, it was the Liverpool defence who were

:17:35.:17:41.

guilty of slum slumbering on the job.

:17:41.:17:47.

Daniel on Daniel Sturridge on as a substitute. A minute later,

:17:47.:17:51.

Liverpool could have fallen behind had it not been for the brilliance

:17:51.:17:59.

of their goalkeeper, Pepe Reina. A former Chelsea player won the game.

:17:59.:18:05.

First Ashley Cole was nutmeged. For Chelsea, the unusual pain of back-

:18:05.:18:13.

to-back Premier League defeats at Roger Federer won the opening match

:18:13.:18:17.

of the ATP World Tour finals at the O2 Arena in London. The defending

:18:17.:18:20.

champion is aiming for a record sixth title here, the event

:18:20.:18:23.

features the top eight players in the world. Today, he beat Jo

:18:23.:18:29.

Wilfreid Tsonga in three sets. Andy Murray plays David Ferrer tomorrow.

:18:29.:18:31.

The British Olympic Association are bracing themselves for a legal

:18:31.:18:36.

challenge to their lifetime ban for drug cheats. Tonight, the World

:18:36.:18:38.

Anti-Doping Agency say the BOA stance fails to comply with their

:18:38.:18:47.

code and they will pass their findings onto the IOC. It will give

:18:47.:18:49.

hope to British athletes like Dwain Chambers, currently banned for life

:18:49.:18:55.

from the Olympics for past doping bans. It now seems likely that the

:18:55.:18:58.

BOA will have to defend their byelaw at the Court of Arbitration

:18:58.:19:02.

for Sport. Rugby Union now and the Heineken

:19:02.:19:05.

Cup holders Leinster are top of their group after an easy win

:19:05.:19:07.

against Glasgow Warriors. Leinster had already insured a bonus point

:19:07.:19:10.

win by half time and Isaac Boss rounded off an impressive

:19:10.:19:17.

performance scoring in injury time, 38-13 the final score. Bath are
