Good evening. The planned route of Britain's second high speed rail | :00:22. | :00:25.
link between London and Birmingham is to be looked at again, because | :00:25. | :00:29.
of concerns it could damage an area of outstanding natural beauty. The | :00:29. | :00:32.
Government is set to announce a new study into whether to build an | :00:32. | :00:35.
extra tunnel through countryside north of London costing around half | :00:35. | :00:38.
a billion pounds. It means a final decision on whether the whole | :00:38. | :00:41.
project should go ahead will be delayed. Our political | :00:41. | :00:50.
correspondent Ben Geoghegan reports. This is what the journey between | :00:50. | :00:55.
London and Birmingham could be like in the future. A train travelling | :00:55. | :01:02.
at up to 250mph, the journey time cut to less than 50 minutes. The | :01:02. | :01:08.
plans for HS two are controversial. The route passes through prime | :01:08. | :01:13.
countryside and some are opposed because of the cost of 33 billion. | :01:13. | :01:18.
But the backers say it will bring benefits. The fact the Government | :01:18. | :01:25.
is tinkering with the line shows a commitment to the project. It will | :01:25. | :01:33.
sup jobs in the north and midland and rebalance our economies and | :01:33. | :01:39.
provide the UK with the capacity it needs. The route connects London to | :01:39. | :01:43.
Birmingham. Today it emerged the Government is considering part of | :01:43. | :01:50.
the route around one town. The line already runs in underground tunnels | :01:50. | :01:54.
here. The change would mean a new tunnel and the railway would be | :01:54. | :02:00.
underground in this section. The proposed route will cut through | :02:00. | :02:05.
some spectacular scenery, including this part of chill terns. It will | :02:05. | :02:09.
go through the constituency of several Conservative MPs. So by | :02:09. | :02:13.
putting an extra bit of tunnel, the Government may hope that it can | :02:13. | :02:17.
bury a political problem. The Government has been facing a | :02:17. | :02:22.
rebellion from some of its me MPs over the plans. Today, one | :02:22. | :02:26.
Conservative councillor said the suggested changes to the route were | :02:27. | :02:32.
unlikely the make much difference. We need to know where this 500 | :02:32. | :02:37.
million has come from and who will suffer as a result. Our objection | :02:37. | :02:41.
is because of the business case, because of the poor environmental | :02:41. | :02:48.
gain and there are better alternatives. The Government is | :02:48. | :02:52.
delaying its planned announcement until the beginning of next year. | :02:52. | :02:57.
If it decides to go ahead with the proposals, the rail line is | :02:57. | :03:04.
unlikely to be completed for another 15 years. The former | :03:04. | :03:06.
European Commission president, Jacques Delors, one of the | :03:06. | :03:09.
architects of the euro, has said the current crisis stems from a | :03:09. | :03:12.
fault in the way the single currency was introduced. Ahead of a | :03:12. | :03:14.
crucial Euro-summit next week, he told The Daily Telegraph that not | :03:15. | :03:17.
enough attention was paid to the economic weaknesses of some member | :03:17. | :03:20.
states. He also accused current leaders of doing too little too | :03:20. | :03:30.
late. Here's our Europe Correspondent, Chris Morris. A | :03:30. | :03:33.
powerful president of European Commission for a decade, famous for | :03:33. | :03:38.
his fights with Margaret Thatcher, Jacques Delors was also one of the | :03:38. | :03:43.
aerblgts -- architects of single kurn I si. Now he says his | :03:43. | :03:46.
carefully laid plans weren't followed by the politicians of the | :03:46. | :03:51.
day. There was a fault in execution after the euro was introduced he | :03:52. | :03:57.
said. Countries were allowed to break the rules. Jacques Delors | :03:57. | :04:03.
denies he got it wrong, and he believes the euro will survive. | :04:03. | :04:08.
Others are predictably far less certain. What he is saying is that | :04:08. | :04:13.
sceptics were right. We said you couldn't operate a single currency | :04:13. | :04:17.
without a central bank with real powers and without it being a | :04:17. | :04:21.
single European state. Jacques Delors says today's European | :04:21. | :04:25.
leaders have done too little too late and talks of stubbornness of | :04:25. | :04:31.
the German idea of monetary control and no clear vision from others. | :04:31. | :04:34.
The last response we need from Jacques Delors or anyone else | :04:34. | :04:39.
involved, is once again to try and redraw the architecture of Europe. | :04:39. | :04:46.
What we should be dealing with is the hard decisions to enable our | :04:46. | :04:49.
economys to recover together. Plenty to ponder for Angela pler | :04:49. | :04:54.
Kell and Nicolas Sarkozy, due to meet/- Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy, | :04:54. | :05:00.
due to meet again on Monday. Their plan that the promise of radical | :05:00. | :05:05.
change will be enough to restore confidence and calm the storm | :05:05. | :05:08.
surrounding sovereign debt in Europe. Jacques Delors was a blast | :05:08. | :05:13.
from the past, but what matters now is the future. Over the coming week, | :05:13. | :05:17.
can Europe's politicians do enough to persuade the financial markets | :05:17. | :05:26.
to trust them again? If not, things cowl get ugly. - could get ugly. | :05:26. | :05:30.
Lloyds Bank has begun legal moves to claw back part of a bonus of | :05:30. | :05:33.
1.4 million paid to its former Chief Executive, Eric Daniels. The | :05:33. | :05:36.
decision by the part-nationalised bank is believed to be linked to | :05:36. | :05:38.
the costs associated with the mis- selling of payment protection | :05:38. | :05:43.
insurance to some customers. Nearly 3,000 so-called honour attacks were | :05:43. | :05:47.
recorded by police last year. It's the first national estimate of the | :05:47. | :05:51.
extent of this kind of violence in the UK - which includes abduction, | :05:51. | :05:53.

family wedding, but a year later, 14-year-old Tulie was killed by her | :06:11. | :06:15.
father, who disapproved of her boyfriend. At 15 this woman was | :06:15. | :06:20.
imprisoned by her family for refusing to marry a man they had | :06:20. | :06:26.
chosen. She escaped and her sister later committed suicide after | :06:26. | :06:31.
suffering an abusive marriage. the families it is better to commit | :06:31. | :06:34.

committed last year. Almost 500 were in London. They have been | :06:53. | :06:57.

woman have been arrested after a young baby was admitted to a | :07:48. | :07:51.
hospital in Kent in a critical condition. The one-month-old was | :07:51. | :07:54.
taken to Darent Valley Hospital in Dartford on Thursday. He was later | :07:54. | :07:56.
transferred to King's College Hospital in London where his | :07:56. | :08:04.
