The Duke of Edinburgh is spending a second night in hospital after | :00:12. | :00:17.
being treated for a heart problem. Prince Philip is said to be in good | :00:17. | :00:22.
spirits. This morning, the Queen went to visit him, along with their | :00:22. | :00:25.
children, at the hospital in Cambridge and where he remains | :00:25. | :00:30.
under observation. A challenge to the Kremlin - tens of thousands | :00:30. | :00:36.
demonstrate on the streets of Moscow over alleged electoral fraud. | :00:36. | :00:41.
And thousands of miles from home, how British servicemen and women | :00:41. | :00:51.

Good evening. The Duke of Edinburgh is spending a second night in | :01:00. | :01:05.
hospital after being treated for a heart problem. Prince Philip, who's | :01:05. | :01:10.
90, is being treated at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge. He was flown | :01:10. | :01:14.
there last night suffering from chest pains. Buckingham Palace say | :01:14. | :01:18.
he is in good spirits. This morning, the Queen visited, along with her | :01:18. | :01:22.
four children. Nicholas Witchell reports. It is not the Christmassy | :01:22. | :01:27.
she could have expected. The Queen went this morning by helicopter to | :01:27. | :01:30.
Papworth Hospital from Sandringham. She was accompanied by three of | :01:30. | :01:35.
their children, the Duke of York, the Earl of Wessex and the Princess | :01:35. | :01:40.
Royal. The fact that the immediate family went so promptly to the | :01:40. | :01:44.
Duke's bedside indicated that this was a moment of real anxiety, | :01:44. | :01:48.
albeit one which seems to have passed. A short time later, the | :01:48. | :01:52.
Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall also arrived, from their | :01:52. | :01:57.
home in Gloucestershire. According to Buckingham Palace, the Duke, who | :01:57. | :02:02.
was 90 last June, spent a good night after surgeons performed the | :02:02. | :02:06.
operation to relieve a blocked artery in his heart. He had been | :02:06. | :02:11.
taken to hospital by RAF helicopter after experiencing chest pains at | :02:11. | :02:17.
Sandringham. After tests, doctors decided that a minimally invasive | :02:17. | :02:20.
procedure was carried out under local anaesthetic. Up until now, | :02:20. | :02:25.
the Duke has been continuing with an active programme of engagements, | :02:25. | :02:29.
300 of them last year alone. Two months ago he was with the Queen in | :02:29. | :02:33.
Australia, doing what he has done for nearly 60 years, supporting the | :02:33. | :02:38.
Queen in every way he can. Sometimes it is small things, like | :02:38. | :02:42.
guiding a child through the crowds to meet her. Beneath the gruff | :02:42. | :02:49.
exterior is a surprisingly sensitive man. Earlier this year, | :02:49. | :02:53.
at the time of a 90th birthday which he tried to play down, he | :02:53. | :02:59.
admitted that it might be time to ease up. I reckon I have done my | :02:59. | :03:05.
bit, I want to enjoy myself a bit now, with less responsibility, less | :03:05. | :03:10.
frantic rushing about, less preparation, less trying to think | :03:10. | :03:16.
of something to say. On top of that, the memory is going, I cannot | :03:16. | :03:22.
remember names and things. Just sort of winding down. For the Queen | :03:22. | :03:26.
and her family, back at Sandringham, the Christmas programme will Deva | :03:26. | :03:30.
as normal. By coincidence, one of the themes of her Christmas | :03:30. | :03:34.
broadcast this year is that of families and wider community is | :03:34. | :03:38.
rallying around to help each other. Family does not necessarily mean | :03:38. | :03:43.
blood relatives, but it is often a description of a community, | :03:43. | :03:47.
organisation or nation. Every Christmas morning, the Queen is | :03:47. | :03:51.
used to going to church with her husband. He will be absent tomorrow, | :03:51. | :03:57.
but very much in the thoughts of his family and others. The | :03:57. | :04:01.
procedure the Duke of Edinburgh underwent last night was to ease a | :04:01. | :04:05.
blocked artery, it is a fairly common treatment in Britain, but | :04:05. | :04:11.
the age of the Duke does make it more risky. Jane Hughes reports. It | :04:11. | :04:15.
is a treatment which is carried out tens of thousands of tonnes a year | :04:15. | :04:19.
across the UK. It is usually done under local anaesthetic, the | :04:19. | :04:24.
surgeon being guided by X-ray while inserting a flexible tube into the | :04:24. | :04:28.
artery. The aim is to get blood flowing back to the heart as | :04:28. | :04:33.
quickly as possible. Problems arise when an artery gets narrower or | :04:33. | :04:38.
blocked because fatty deposits gradually build up, reducing blood | :04:38. | :04:42.
supply to the heart. Surgeons unblocked it by inserting a narrow | :04:42. | :04:50.
tube along the artery, to insert a stent. Once in place, a balloon | :04:50. | :04:55.
expands, forcing out the walls, and widening the artery. The balloon is | :04:55. | :04:59.
removed, but the stent stays in place. In many cases it releases | :04:59. | :05:04.
drugs to help reduce the risk of the artery never win again. | :05:04. | :05:07.
Papworth Hospital, where the Duke of Edinburgh is being treated, is | :05:07. | :05:11.
very used to carrying out the procedure. It is the biggest | :05:11. | :05:17.
specialist heart and Lung Hospital in the UK. They put stents into the | :05:17. | :05:25.
arteries of around 2000 patients every year. Coronary heart disease | :05:25. | :05:31.
affects 2.6 million people in the UK. More than 80,000 a year of | :05:31. | :05:35.
treatment to unblock an artery or fit a stent, with a success rate of | :05:35. | :05:41.
more than 95%. The chances of a complication of very small, just a | :05:41. | :05:46.
few %. Whilst they must be a little bit higher with somebody in their | :05:46. | :05:51.
90s, if that somebody is motivated and otherwise fit and well, and has | :05:51. | :05:54.
looked after themselves, then I think the chances of a complete | :05:55. | :06:00.
recovery are very high. The Duke of Edinburgh may be anxious to resume | :06:00. | :06:04.
his normal activities, but doctors are keeping him under observation | :06:04. | :06:08.
for now. But experts say there is no reason why he should not make a | :06:08. | :06:12.
speedy recovery. Tens of thousands of protesters | :06:12. | :06:16.
took to the streets of Moscow today, demonstrating against alleged | :06:16. | :06:19.
electoral fraud. They were demanding a re-run of the | :06:19. | :06:24.
parliamentary elections which Vladimir Putin's party won earlier | :06:24. | :06:28.
this month. A number of opposition figures, including the former | :06:28. | :06:32.
leader Mikhail Gorbachev, have called for Mr Putin to step down. | :06:32. | :06:36.
This report from Daniel Sandford. The temperature never got above | :06:36. | :06:41.
zero, but it became clear today that Moscow's newly militant voters | :06:41. | :06:45.
will not give up easily. They feel that they were cheated in the | :06:45. | :06:50.
elections, and they can sense that the freedoms that a won at the end | :06:50. | :06:56.
of the Communist era are slipping away. We believe that we can change | :06:56. | :07:05.
something. We changed it 20 years ago, and I'm sure that we can | :07:05. | :07:10.
change things today. It was the biggest protest of the Vladimir | :07:10. | :07:14.
Putin era, bigger than the one two weeks ago, and another challenge to | :07:14. | :07:18.
a political establishment that had become too comfortable. The main | :07:18. | :07:22.
complaint was still about cheating at the polls. New elections, they | :07:22. | :07:29.
cry. It is the second time in a fortnight that the people of Moscow | :07:29. | :07:33.
have braved bitter winter temperatures to come out in their | :07:33. | :07:37.
tens of thousands and send a simple message to the government - we have | :07:37. | :07:44.
had enough. It would be a mistake to think that this crowd represents | :07:44. | :07:49.
all the Russian people. Nobody can be sure how widespread the descent | :07:49. | :07:54.
is. But Moscow has not seen defiance like this for decades, and | :07:54. | :07:58.
now it is happening again and again, and the protesters are in a | :07:58. | :08:03.
determined frame of mind. We are waiting for transparency. We're | :08:03. | :08:09.
waiting for honesty. I think it is very, very important to be honest | :08:09. | :08:17.
with your people. To add to Vladimir Putin's troubles, his | :08:17. | :08:21.
long-term Finance Minister, who only left three months ago, also | :08:22. | :08:29.
called for new elections, though not straightaway. First we need to | :08:29. | :08:33.
change the laws on registering political parties, he said, then | :08:33. | :08:36.
have a new political campaign and fresh elections to get the | :08:36. | :08:41.
government we need. Russia is already a democracy, of a kind. The | :08:41. | :08:45.
government has made concessions to help opposition parties already | :08:45. | :08:49.
this week. But without overturning the whole political system, the | :08:49. | :08:53.
protesters want more than just cosmetic changes. Nobody wants a | :08:54. | :08:59.
revolution, we just want fair elections and a government that | :08:59. | :09:04.
actually represents our interests. The once all-powerful Vladimir | :09:04. | :09:08.
Putin runs for president again in March. You will probably still win, | :09:08. | :09:16.
but it is not going to be uneasy campaign. A member of the Royal Air | :09:16. | :09:20.
Force who was seriously injured in an explosion in Afghanistan on | :09:20. | :09:24.
Thursday has died. A Royal Marine was also killed in the attack. The | :09:24. | :09:29.
blast happened to the south of Kabul. The serviceman was flown | :09:29. | :09:33.
back to the UK but died in hospital in Birmingham. His family has been | :09:33. | :09:37.
informed. The head of the British Army, General Sir Peter Wall, has | :09:37. | :09:41.
been visiting troops in Afghanistan to thank them for their work. He | :09:41. | :09:48.
met up with servicemen and women in Helmand province. From there, our | :09:49. | :09:57.
defence correspondent, Caroline Wyatt, reports. The band of the | :09:57. | :10:00.
Royal Regiment of Scotland, bringing a little Christmas cheer | :10:00. | :10:05.
to dining rooms across Helmand. They will travel on to the | :10:05. | :10:13.
frontline bases to offer some festive cheer to the troops. For a | :10:13. | :10:16.
family man like me, it is quite hard to be a way, but because of | :10:17. | :10:19.
the commitment that we have in Afghanistan, we have to live with | :10:19. | :10:29.
it. At Camp Bastion, the Head of the Army, General Sir Peter Wall, | :10:29. | :10:32.
came to thank the troops in person and pay tribute to their families | :10:32. | :10:37.
for their support. It is tough, one thing about the military is that | :10:37. | :10:40.
you do not get to decide where you spend Christmas yourself. We are | :10:40. | :10:45.
conscious that we make big demands on our soldiers, sailors and airmen | :10:45. | :10:49.
- and marines - and that we depend on the support that they receive | :10:49. | :10:53.
from their families in order to make sure that we can prosecute our | :10:54. | :10:57.
operation out here alongside our Afghan partners. For the men and | :10:57. | :11:01.
women serving out here, it is very much business as usual. People will | :11:01. | :11:05.
still be going out on patrol, still be fixing these vehicles, although | :11:06. | :11:09.
they will be given extra time to ring home. And they do know that | :11:09. | :11:13.
the army chefs are preparing a very special Christmas lunch. The | :11:13. | :11:17.
preparations for the fading of the 10,000 are well under way. The | :11:17. | :11:21.
forces here will be served a proper Christmas meal, with Turkey and all | :11:21. | :11:27.
the trimmings. We will be feeding around 4,500 troops here, plus 500 | :11:27. | :11:33.
at the forward bases. And there will be a few thousand more who | :11:33. | :11:36.
will all receive a Christmas dinner at some stage over the festive | :11:36. | :11:42.
period. In Kabul, it has also been a season for giving, as British | :11:42. | :11:45.
forces distributed blankets and cooking oil to some of the poorest | :11:45. | :11:49.
in the city, in what remains one of the poorest countries in the world. | :11:49. | :11:53.
The guys walk around and look at things and they want to change them. | :11:53. | :11:57.
They do not often get the opportunity. This is one time when | :11:57. | :12:02.
they can get out amongst the people and try and give something back. | :12:02. | :12:07.
operations continue here this weekend, many will be hoping for a | :12:07. | :12:12.
crisp -- for a peaceful Christmas Day in Helmand, just as their | :12:12. | :12:14.
families back home will be thinking of their loved ones on the front | :12:14. | :12:21.
lines. Reports from Yemen say at least nine people have been killed | :12:21. | :12:26.
by security forces, were opened fire on protesters in the capital, | :12:26. | :12:29.
Sanaa. Tens of thousands of demonstrators were taking part in a | :12:29. | :12:33.
march in a southern city to demand that the outgoing President should | :12:33. | :12:38.
be put on trial for his part in a violent crackdown on anti- | :12:38. | :12:42.
government protests. Tens of thousands of tourists and Christian | :12:42. | :12:48.
pilgrims have gathered in Bethlehem for the Christmas Eve celebrations. | :12:48. | :12:51.
Palestinian officials say the number of visitors to the | :12:51. | :12:59.
traditional birthplace of Jesus was at its highest for a decade. | :13:00. | :13:03.
Christmas in the Holy Land. Pilgrims from around the world | :13:03. | :13:10.
gathered in Bethlehem's Manger Square. We're here to celebrate the | :13:10. | :13:16.
birth of Jesus. We know that this is a country with several religions, | :13:16. | :13:21.
and everything is mixed up here, but we believe in the birth of | :13:21. | :13:26.
Jesus on this day, so this is why we are here. Just to be around | :13:26. | :13:29.
these people, to celebrate the birth of Jesus with them, it is an | :13:29. | :13:34.
amazing experience. Christmas is a chance for Palestinians to | :13:34. | :13:39.
celebrate their biggest tourist attraction. The centre of Bethlehem | :13:39. | :13:45.
is open to be able to come and visit. It is secure, Palestine is | :13:46. | :13:52.
celebrating Christmas with hope. lucky few were able to attend | :13:53. | :13:59.
Midnight Mass in the Church of the Nativity, which was built 1,700 | :13:59. | :14:06.
years ago, on the spot Christians believe Jesus was born. This | :14:06. | :14:11.
Christmas, many people here will be reflecting on a year of momentous | :14:11. | :14:19.
change. But for Palestinians, not much has shifted. There has been | :14:19. | :14:23.
zero progress in terms of talks with Israel. Many here will be | :14:23. | :14:28.
hoping, but not necessarily expecting, that that might change | :14:28. | :14:36.
in 2012. This evening, Pope Benedict has been celebrating | :14:36. | :14:41.
Christmas Eve Mass at Vatican City. He spoke out about the increasing | :14:41. | :14:45.
commercialisation of Christmas, urging people to look beyond what | :14:46. | :14:49.
he called the "superficial glitter", to discover its true meaning. | :14:49. | :14:52.
Football now, and in the Scottish Premier League, the leaders, | :14:52. | :14:58.
Rangers, suffered only their second defeat of the season, losing 2-1 at | :14:58. | :15:05.
St Mirren. Rangers were reduced to nine men in a feisty match. The SPL | :15:05. | :15:09.
makes no allowances for last minute shopping plans. Christmas Eve is | :15:09. | :15:15.
just another working day. And Rangers were not clocking off early, | :15:15. | :15:20.
Neil Wallis got his first Rangers goal. St Mirren were being squeezed | :15:20. | :15:24.
out, but a swing of the elbow from Lee McCulloch swung things back | :15:25. | :15:29.
their way. Rangers were left with 10 men with more than an hour to go. | :15:29. | :15:34.
It was not 20 minutes before Aaron Mooy got the equaliser for St | :15:34. | :15:39.
Mirren. The hosts were expertly finding holes in the defence of the | :15:39. | :15:46.
champions. And Paul McGowan went through one of those holes. Rangers | :15:46. | :15:50.
tried to equalise after the break, but they missed their best chance. | :15:50. | :15:55.
The afternoon ended disastrously, when Dorin Goian got a second | :15:55. | :16:01.
booking. So, a Christmas Eve to forget for Rangers, but at least | :16:01. | :16:08.
the big day is nearly here - Celtic away on Wednesday. An Indonesian | :16:08. | :16:12.
girl who was feared dead after being swept from her mother's arms | :16:12. | :16:16.
during the tsunami seven years ago has been found alive. Meri Yulanda | :16:16. | :16:20.
was reunited with the couple she believes are her parents this week. | :16:20. | :16:24.
She was just eight years old when the disaster struck her village on | :16:24. | :16:28.
Boxing Day in 2004. She has been living as a street beggar since | :16:28. | :16:33. |
