Crunch talks at Camp David. G8 leaders stress the need for growth | :00:12. | :00:16.
to tackle the eurozone crisis. They agree austerity alone can't revive | :00:16. | :00:21.
Europe and improve the global economy. | :00:21. | :00:24.
Growth and austerity aren't alternatives. You need a deficit | :00:24. | :00:29.
reduction plan in order to get growth. Tribute force the crew of a | :00:29. | :00:34.
fishing boat that sunk off the coast of Dorset. | :00:34. | :00:39.
Tens of thousands turn out in Cornwall to see the Olympic Torch | :00:39. | :00:49.
:00:49. | :00:49. | ||
start its 70-day journey across the Hip hip... Hurray The Armed Forces | :00:49. | :00:54.
pay tribute to the Queen at a special event to mark her Diamond | :00:54. | :01:01.
Jubilee. And Drogba keeps his head to take | :01:01. | :01:11.
:01:11. | :01:20. | ||
the Champions League final into Good evening. President Obama, | :01:20. | :01:25.
David Cameron and the other members of the G8 group of leading nations, | :01:25. | :01:28.
including the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, claim to have found | :01:28. | :01:32.
common ground on solving the eurozone crisis, all accepting that | :01:32. | :01:36.
growth can be achieved in tandem with financial discipline and | :01:36. | :01:40.
austerity. But there's one major sticking point. They still differ | :01:40. | :01:45.
on how that growth is best achieved. From the G8 in the United States, | :01:45. | :01:48.
Norman Smith's just sent this report. | :01:48. | :01:53.
The jumpers said it all. A summit where the dress sense of G8 leaders | :01:53. | :01:58.
was nearly as varied as their views on saving the euro. | :01:58. | :02:01.
The hope had been that the relatively informal setting of Camp | :02:01. | :02:07.
David might have helped them to put their differences to one side. | :02:07. | :02:15.
All of us are absolutely committed to making sure that both growth and | :02:15. | :02:18.
stability and fiscal consolidation are part of an overall package that | :02:18. | :02:23.
we all have to pursue. David Cameron and President Obama even | :02:23. | :02:28.
took time out to coordinate tactics in the unlikely setting of the Camp | :02:28. | :02:33.
David gym, pounding the treadmill and repeating their call for urgent | :02:33. | :02:36.
action. Every country needs to have in place strong plans for dealing | :02:36. | :02:41.
with their deficits. Growth and austerity aren't alternatives, you | :02:41. | :02:44.
need a deficit reduction plan in order to get growth, in order to | :02:44. | :02:47.
have the low interest rates that we have in Britain that are vital for | :02:47. | :02:51.
the future of our economy. wonder then there was a | :02:51. | :02:54.
particularly warm welcome for the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel. | :02:54. | :03:00.
German money is regarded as the key to any rescue plan. Perhaps not | :03:00. | :03:06.
surprisingly, Mrs Merkel disagrees. We need both. Budgetary discipline, | :03:06. | :03:09.
consolidation and all efforts for growth at the same time which is | :03:09. | :03:15.
mutually conditional. That means it's important to work on both | :03:15. | :03:18.
parts. All participants made that clear and I believe it's | :03:18. | :03:21.
significant progress. As if to underline the lack of a | :03:21. | :03:26.
clear direction, G8 leaders and their summit communique conceded | :03:26. | :03:32.
that different measures might now be needed in different countries. | :03:32. | :03:35.
We can speak to Norman now. As you mentioned there, there has been | :03:35. | :03:39.
this communique from the G8, but really, is there any more substance | :03:39. | :03:44.
to it than the words on the paper at the moment? | :03:44. | :03:48.
Well, this communique is meant to send a message to the markets that | :03:48. | :03:51.
the eurozone countries are determined to defend their currency | :03:51. | :03:55.
and keep Greece within the euro. But therein lies the problem. It's | :03:55. | :04:01.
a message, it's not an action plan. It's entirely questionable whether | :04:01. | :04:04.
messages, mere words are anywhere near sufficient now to reassure the | :04:04. | :04:09.
markets. It seems to me what this summit has revealed, despite this | :04:09. | :04:12.
compromise communique, is that among the key players, there | :04:12. | :04:17.
remains significant disagreements over how to respond to the eurozone | :04:17. | :04:20.
crisis in terms of what measures are needed, who should pay for them | :04:20. | :04:25.
and how quickly they should be implemented. On that last point, | :04:25. | :04:29.
tonight Government sources are warning that any potential deal on | :04:29. | :04:34.
the eurozone could still be weeks away. The danger there of course is | :04:34. | :04:40.
we know markets tend to deal not inway weeks but days and hours. | :04:40. | :04:43.
Two fishermen are feared drowned off the coast of Dorset after the | :04:43. | :04:48.
body of their skipper and the wreck of their boat were found and the | :04:48. | :04:52.
crew of three have been missing since Thursday when contact was | :04:52. | :04:58.
lost with the boat, p Purbeck Isle. Daniel Boettcher reports. At the | :04:58. | :05:02.
quayside, messages have been left with messages of condolence, some | :05:02. | :05:07.
from friends of the three men, a few from complete strangers. The | :05:07. | :05:10.
Purbeck Isle left Thursday morning, this evening, this town knew they | :05:10. | :05:14.
would not be coming back. Yofrpblgts you hear of maybe one | :05:14. | :05:18.
every few years losing their lives to a fishing incident, but not | :05:18. | :05:22.
three young men at once. The wreck of the Purbeck Isle was | :05:22. | :05:27.
found at the bottom of the sea ten miles off Portland. The body of her | :05:27. | :05:30.
skipper, David MacFarlane, was recovered yesterday. Friends have | :05:30. | :05:36.
started a collection for his family. This guy was the best in this | :05:36. | :05:41.
harbour. That's the truth. 100%. The bodies of Robert Prowse and | :05:41. | :05:46.
Jack Craig have not been found, despite further sichs today. | :05:46. | :05:51.
Earlier, there had still been a hope that the two missing men had | :05:51. | :05:56.
taken to the liferaft of the purr bick isle, but a search by a remote | :05:56. | :06:00.
controlled submersible established that it had not been deployed and | :06:00. | :06:03.
the search was called off -- Purbeck Isle. Investigators will | :06:03. | :06:07.
look at what happened, but in Weymouth, the focus is on | :06:07. | :06:10.
reflecting on their loss. understand that these sorts of | :06:10. | :06:14.
things do happen. It doesn't make it any easier. Basically, everybody | :06:14. | :06:18.
has to pull together and support each other. That's the crucial | :06:18. | :06:23.
thing. Candles have been lit in the church overlooking the harbour from | :06:23. | :06:31.
which the Purbeck Isle set off. The Chinese human rights activist, | :06:31. | :06:34.
Chen Guangcheng, is due to land in the US in the next couple of hours | :06:35. | :06:38.
after being allowed on to a flight with his wife and children by the | :06:38. | :06:43.
Chinese government. Our correspondent, Steve Kingston, is | :06:43. | :06:46.
at new ack airport in New Jersey where he's due to arrive. The cause | :06:46. | :06:52.
of a diplomatic stand-off this one, Steve -- new ark Airport. This has | :06:52. | :06:56.
been a compelling story. The day began in Beijing with Chen | :06:56. | :06:59.
Guangcheng, his wife and two children told by Chinese officials, | :06:59. | :07:03.
pack and quickly. They were then taken to the airport, Mr Chen in a | :07:04. | :07:07.
wheelchair. He injured his foot in escaping from house arrest last | :07:07. | :07:15.
month. When they touched down -- touch down, American diplomats will | :07:15. | :07:19.
pass them into the care of officials from New York university | :07:19. | :07:24.
where from Mr Chen will teach as part of an arrangement between the | :07:24. | :07:28.
two Governments. This is tested super power relations but tonight | :07:28. | :07:31.
Washington and Beijing will be breathing a sigh of relief. For the | :07:31. | :07:35.
Chinese, it's been embarrassing, but by having him come here as a | :07:35. | :07:40.
student, rather than keep seeking asylum, that's face saving and the | :07:40. | :07:45.
Americans can say they upheld his human rights. Seven people have | :07:45. | :07:48.
appeared in court in Northern Ireland charged with terrorism | :07:48. | :07:52.
offences. It follows an vaegtion into dissident republic activity. | :07:52. | :07:55.
There was heavy security in and around Lisburn Magistrates Court | :07:55. | :08:00.
where three of the men, all relatives of Colin Duffy, were | :08:00. | :08:05.
remanded in custody -- it follows an investigation. | :08:05. | :08:09.
At least nine people have been killed in Syria after a car bomb | :08:09. | :08:13.
exploded in the city of Deir al- Zour. Around a hundred people have | :08:13. | :08:16.
been injured. State television is reporting that a suicide bomb | :08:16. | :08:20.
Ericaryed out the attack. Opposition groups are blaming | :08:20. | :08:24.
Government forces. In Italy, a bomb has exploded | :08:24. | :08:27.
outside a school, killing a 16- year-old girl. Several others were | :08:27. | :08:32.
injured. It happened as pupils arrived for Saturday morning | :08:32. | :08:36.
lessons at the school in Brindisi. It's been suggested the local Mafia | :08:37. | :08:41.
is behind it but no-one's claimed responsibility. | :08:41. | :08:45.
The Olympic flame began its 70-day journey around the UK this morning. | :08:45. | :08:49.
The relay was started by the Olympic sailing champion Ben | :08:49. | :08:53.
Ainslie. Robert Hall reports. | :08:53. | :08:58.
He is a triple Olympic gold medal winner. Today, Ben Ainslie became | :08:58. | :09:05.
runner number 001 as the 2012 torch convoy began to role. | :09:05. | :09:09.
This was a day of blue skies and the warmest of Cornish welcomes, | :09:09. | :09:13.
particularly for those who'd been nominated to carry the flame within | :09:13. | :09:17.
their own communities. Runners like Emma Davidson who's partially | :09:17. | :09:23.
sighted, nominated by her son and a star in the streets of new Lynn. | :09:23. | :09:31.
I'm all a bit shaky and excited. -- Newlyn. On a beach with one of the | :09:31. | :09:35.
world's most beautiful views, this village remembered their ancient | :09:35. | :09:39.
past and applauded their sporting present. I'm really excited about | :09:39. | :09:43.
the Olympics. It's a once in a lifetime experience and it's | :09:43. | :09:46.
wonderful for Great Britain. As word spread, the crowds grew. | :09:47. | :09:51.
This was the packed centre of Cornwall's capital. Truro brought | :09:51. | :09:55.
to a halt as the convoy eased its way through. | :09:55. | :10:01.
There were famous faces and new perspectives. Ben Fogle hoisted by | :10:01. | :10:05.
balloon under the giant domes of the Eden Project. And there was | :10:05. | :10:10.
courage, torch bearer Garvey Evans under treatment for a brain tumour | :10:10. | :10:16.
summoning his strength to walk the last few yards. This evening, | :10:16. | :10:22.
across to another historic site and for thousands another historic | :10:22. | :10:25.
moment. The flame burning tonight marks a day when the plans of the | :10:25. | :10:28.
convoy organisers and local authorities have come to fruition. | :10:28. | :10:34.
A day when more and more people came out to cheer local heroes and | :10:34. | :10:41.
sporting heroes. Tomorrow, with 69 days to go, it all begins again. | :10:41. | :10:45.
Pch- And the Queen has paid tribute to | :10:45. | :10:48.
the Armed Forces during a special event to mark her Diamond Jubilee. | :10:48. | :10:53.
More than 2,500 members of the Royal Navy Army and Royal Air Force | :10:53. | :10:58.
took part in a parade through Windsor this morning. Nicholas | :10:58. | :11:02.
Witchell was there. They are Her Majesty's Armed Forces. | :11:02. | :11:07.
They owe their loyalty to the Crown and the Crown in the personal of | :11:07. | :11:11.
this Monarch has always had the keenest of interest in them -- | :11:11. | :11:16.
person of this Monarch. From Windsor Castle, 3,000 members | :11:16. | :11:21.
of the Royal Navy, the Army and Royal Air Force marched through the | :11:21. | :11:23.
centre of town to a parade in Windsor Home Park. The military | :11:23. | :11:28.
service of many members of the Royal Family was recalled by the | :11:28. | :11:31.
Chief of the Defence Staff who hinted that Prince Harry may return | :11:31. | :11:36.
to a frontline. Prince Harry's operational tour in | :11:36. | :11:41.
Afghanistan in the Army was a huge credit to him and his success in | :11:41. | :11:51.
flying training means it's likely he'll serve operationally again. | :11:51. | :11:56.
At a drum head service, today's Armed Forces paid tribute to a | :11:56. | :12:00.
Monarch who's been on the throne for as long as most of those | :12:00. | :12:04.
present could remember. Britain's Armed Forces have changed | :12:05. | :12:08.
greatly in the year since the Queen came to the throne. One thing has | :12:08. | :12:12.
not changed though, and that is the high regard in which she holds the | :12:12. | :12:19.
men and women who serve in them. In a speech, the Queen expressed | :12:19. | :12:25.
that admiration. We are very proud of the selfless | :12:25. | :12:28.
service and sacrifices made by servicemen and women and their | :12:28. | :12:35.
families in recent years. Hip hip... Three cheers were given | :12:35. | :12:39.
and a flypast in the skies above from the aircraft which defended | :12:39. | :12:43.
Britain in the Queen's youth to the warplanes of today, all paying | :12:43. | :12:50.
tribute to the 60-year service of their Commander in Chief. | :12:50. | :12:55.
Perfect. Now, it's been a night of hydra that in the Champions League | :12:55. | :12:59.
in Munich. Dan von there with the latest on Chelsea's game against | :12:59. | :13:03.
Bayern Munich and the rest of the sport as well -- Dan Roan. | :13:03. | :13:06.
Thanks, Kate. After coming agonisingly close to lifting the | :13:06. | :13:11.
trophy, they covered above all others four years ago in Moscow. | :13:11. | :13:14.
Tonight was simply the biggest match in Chelsea's history. They | :13:14. | :13:18.
were missing key players through suspension and they had to face the | :13:18. | :13:22.
formidable challenge of playing Bayern, the biggest club in Germany | :13:22. | :13:27.
on home soil here in Munich, as Tim Franks reports, it's gone right to | :13:27. | :13:30.
the wire. The polite fiction is that this | :13:30. | :13:35.
year's final, like all others, was to be played at a neutral venue. | :13:35. | :13:39.
Try telling that to the people of Munich. | :13:39. | :13:44.
All fans travel in hope, but Chelsea supporters carry an extra | :13:44. | :13:49.
burden of history because no London team has ever won club football's | :13:50. | :13:54.
greatest prize. Add to that Munich's formidable record in this, | :13:54. | :13:58.
their home stadium. The Chelsea owner, Roman Ambramovich, has spent | :13:58. | :14:03.
a billion pounds getting here. But for much of the first half, he | :14:03. | :14:08.
could only watch waves of Bayern attacks. Robben came close. | :14:08. | :14:12.
Painfully close. As the second half wound on, so | :14:12. | :14:18.
Bayern's pressure on Chelsea wound up. In the end, it paid off. Muller | :14:18. | :14:23.
only started because other players were suspended, he got the ball | :14:23. | :14:27.
past Cech. Chelseaed that their first corner. That might tell you | :14:27. | :14:32.
something. Drogba predictibly had his own story to tell. | :14:32. | :14:37.
Same box, same player, but this time Drogba gave a penalty away. | :14:37. | :14:41.
Robben had a long time to think about where to put the ball, just | :14:41. | :14:47.
not there. The second half of extra time, a moment for tired legs and | :14:47. | :14:51.
class tans and the most exquisite torture of them all, a penalty | :14:51. | :14:59.
shoot-out against the Germans. That penalty shoot-out continues in | :14:59. | :15:03.
the stadium behind me, hopefully we'll have a result in the next few | :15:03. | :15:07.
moments. Other football news now and West Ham United will be playing | :15:07. | :15:11.
with Chelsea in the Premier League next season after winning the | :15:11. | :15:14.
Championship play-off final against Blackpool in a game known as the | :15:14. | :15:19.
richest in the sport. Rob Heath reports. The promised land beckoned. | :15:19. | :15:23.
One side destined for the fire and brimstone of the Premier League, | :15:23. | :15:27.
but one team's dream would go up in smoke. | :15:27. | :15:30.
Both the sides were relegated from the top division a years ago. | :15:30. | :15:34.
Blackpool had the best early chances, but West Ham's more direct | :15:34. | :15:38.
approach paid dividends. Carlton Cole gave them the lead ten minutes | :15:38. | :15:42.
before half time. Blackpool continued to create the | :15:42. | :15:46.
best chances and finally equalised just after the break. The scorer, | :15:46. | :15:51.
Thomas Ince, son of the former England and West Ham player Paul. | :15:51. | :15:57.
With time running out and legs tiring, it was the eastEnders who | :15:57. | :16:02.
outmuscled the Seasiders, one last push and Vaz Te produced the goal | :16:02. | :16:07.
that's worth millions. For manager Sam Allardyce and West Ham, riches | :16:07. | :16:17.
:16:17. | :16:17. | ||
beyond their wildest dreams. Meanwhile, North of the border, | :16:17. | :16:24.
Hearts are the new Scottish Cup champions. They thrashed local | :16:24. | :16:28.
rivals Edinburgh 5-1 at Hampden Park in Glasgow, the first time in | :16:28. | :16:33.
over a hundred years that the two arch rivals from Edinburgh have | :16:33. | :16:38.
faced each other in a Scottish Cup final, a convincing victory for | :16:38. | :16:43.
Hearts there in the end. Ruern as well of course at | :16:43. | :16:47.
Twickenham today. The Heineken Cup final, the biggest game in European | :16:47. | :16:51.
club rugby, two Irish sides and it was Leinster that triumphed | :16:51. | :16:56.
becoming the first side to score five tries or more in a final -- | :16:56. | :17:02.
Rugby Union. They've won it three times in the last four seasons. | :17:02. | :17:10.
They beat Ulster by 42- 22. We are yet to have a result here sadly. It | :17:10. | :17:15.
has gone to penalties, Chelsea's long quest to try and deliver | :17:15. | :17:20.
European glory to their fans and of course to Roman Ambramovich, the | :17:20. | :17:25.
club's owner who's pumped around 1 billion into Chelsea over the last | :17:25. | :17:30.
nine years continues. We shall have a result in the next few moments. | :17:30. | :17:34.
You can see that result and all of today's stories on the G8 on the | :17:34. | :17:38. |
