Good afternoon. Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg,

is to repeat the call for the tax on the wethy when he rallies

activist on the day of the party conference, but he will point out

that the Lib Dems are outnumbered in the coalition Cabinet and to

have the action reduced, they will have to win the argument.

Nick Clegg has had rather a Rowling ride on the journey to Brighton

since forming the coalition, the party is trailing in the polls and

his answer ratings are far from positive.

It is an important conference at a crucial time it is a tough time

economically for the country. It has been a challenge eing time for

the Liberal Democrats politically, but I don't want anyone to be under

doubt that the Liberal Democrats, they will hold their nerve, they

will see this through. The party leader is having trouble

getting his message across to the electorate.

When Nick Clegg speaks from the stage here in Brighton, he will not

just win back the trust of voters, but he will try to re-build trust

with his party members. Reminding them of what he achieved in

Government, also pointing out where he has differences with the

coalition partners. Amongst the coalition achievements

he is to focus on pupil premium. A Lib Dem scheme to make cash

available to help disadvantaged schoolchildren.

And how they helped reform the banks, but he will try to make

clear how they are different from the Tories, to put a levy on

homeowners of expensive homes. Nick Clegg know it is will take time to

turn around the political fortunes. He made a start by apologising for

the prej on tuition fees, but even that was lampooned on the internet.

announcements are taken more seriously.

struggling in the polls. There have been rumblings. Can Nick Clegg

the glorious weather here, it has been a fairly dismal summer for

them with the dire poll ratings and the flagship House of Lords reforms,

Nick Clegg is to hope that by stressing the need for the wealth

taxs to pay off the deficit, he will advertise the difference also

between his party and the Conservatives and saying that the

Lib Dems are still a radical party, but the difficulty is that they are

not going to get specific tax proposals. Added to which George

Osbourne is opposed to this move. The danger is he is unable to

deliver on the tax pledge. Alexander Mitchell is resisting

calls to stand down after claims he swore at Downing Street police

officers, calling them a pleing. Labour has called for a full

account of his outburst. The Tory Chief Whip denies using language,

but has apologised. The Libyan Islamist militia group

has been driven from its base in the city of Benghazi.

The protestors stormed the headquarters of Mazar-e-Sharif.

This is the jubilation, fuelled by the fewer I -- fury of protestors.

brigades that they blame for lawlessness. Benghazi's streets

have not seen an outpouring of public anger like this since the

It was said earlier this week that the group were not going to help in

democracy. Four US embassy staff were killed

earlier in the week, including the US ambassador to Libya, Christopher

Steven. These are difficult times for the country, emerging from a

uprising that ended after a 4-year dictatorship.
