Good afternoon. Tens of thousands of people have been marching in

London, Glasgow and Belfast in protest at the Government's

austerity measures. The demonstrations were organised by

the Trades Union Congress. In a speech in London, the Labour Leader,

Ed Miliband, called the Prime Minister clueless" but was booed

when he said Labour would have to make what he called hard choices,

as John Moylan reports. At noon in London they started

marching. Up to 100,000 people, health workers, teachers, the old

and the young. An estimated 5,000 also took to the streets in

Glasgow... There was a major demonstration in Belfast, too. All

United with a similar story to tell. I am a nurse and sick to death with

this. I have a daughter who hopes to go to university but the price

of everything is up. The bankers have just walked away from this and

we are paying the price. I am a teacher and icy at ground level the

impact of the cuts they are making her and the effect they are having.

If we don't invest in our children, we have no future. Labour's poll

ratings are up and there is growing concern about where the economy is

now going exactly. This is an opportunity to step up pressure on

the Government which has suffered a series of setbacks. At Thame rally

in Hyde Park, Ed Miliband was among dozens of speakers who said the

Government's policies were not working. But there was booing when

he said the Labour Party would have to make tough choices... I said

whoever was in government now, there would be tough cuts. But this

Government has shown that they are cutting too far and too fast. Self-

defeating austerity is not the answer. The Government insists

there will not waver from its plans and they criticised the Labour

Leader's presence here today. turning up today at a rally that

opposes every single spent -- spending cut necessary to deal with

our debt, he has shown he is still in favour of more spending, more

boring and even greater debt. That is what got us into this mess in

the first place. -- more borrowing. There was some trouble today.

Scuffles between police and anti- tax-avoidance groups. But even

among mainstream unions, there are some who believe rallies are not

enough and more action needs to be taken.

Two people are still in intensive care in hospital after a series of

hit-and-run incidents in Cardiff yesterday. A woman was killed and

13 people were injured, including seven children. Witnesses say a man

deliberately drove into pedestrians in five locations before getting

out of his van and attacking people. Detectives are continuing to

question a 31-year-old man, as Hywell Griffith reports from

Cardiff. A speeding van caught on CCTV as

its driver unleashed a wave of violence on the streets of Cardiff.

The 31-year-old man is being questioned on suspicion of murder.

Police believe he also attacked pedestrians with a weapon. There is

witness evidence to suggest the person we having custody has

physically assaulted people outside the vehicle. There was a weapon

which we are looking to recover and identify. Through the day, flowers

have been laid for a mother cut down as she walked with her

children. 32-year-old Karina Menzies was hit by the full force

of the ban as it mounted the pavement. Paramedics were unable to

revive her. The police investigations and the -- up the

length and breadth of Cardiff from the West over to a retail park

where two women were hit. Police say the attacks all took place

within 30 minutes. In that short time, the driver hit 14 people

seemingly chosen at random, most of them women and young children

making their way home at the end of the school day. They include two-

year-old Amelia, thrown from her pushchair as the van hit her mother.

It is like I haven't slept because going through my mind was that they

were both dead. It was really shocking. This evening, police have

been calling people's homes and asking for their help in trying to

uncover what may have triggered such violence.

A women who died in a house fire in North Wales, which also killed two

children, has been named as Lee- Anna Shiers. A man and a baby were

injured in the blaze and are being treated in hospital. Two people are

being questioned by police on suspicion of murder. Our reporter,

Olivia Richwald is in Prestatyn. What is the latest? From here in

the street you can see just how ferocious the fire was last night

and the top two floors are blackened and shot from the smoke

and flames. Some of the glass from the windows has been blown out.

Senior crime officers have been here all day and friends have been

coming to lay flowers and balloons and teddy bears in memory of those

who were killed. The neighbours said last night the street was

filled with smoke and they could see people upstairs trapped behind

the windows. They said a man was running down the street saying, my

children are stuck in the building. When firefighters arrived they had

to use water jets to battle through the flames to get into the house.

When they did, they found five people. There was nothing they

could do to save a 20-year-old woman, named tonight as Lee-Anna

Shiers, and a five-year-old boy. Amman and a 15-month-old boy

rescued and are in hospital. -- a man. Two people have been arrested

and it has emerged they lived in the ground floor flat of the

building. The leader of the SNP, Alex Salmond,

says it's game on for Scotland, as the country prepares for an

independence vote in two years' time. He told the SNP Conference in

Perth that the Scottish people were fed up of being ruled by a

Westminster elite, and were ready for change. Here's Colin Blane.

There is a sense of growing confidence within the SNP. Party

membership has never been higher. There have been internal

differences but the prospect of an independence referendum in 2014 has

concentrated minds. Alex Salmond believes the SNP has a once in a

generation opportunity. The two years that lie ahead of us now are

the most important in a party's history and our country's recent

history to secure a better future for our families, our country and

our nation. The future starts with a yes vote. Delegates, it is game

on for Scotland. Mr Salmond said the Independent's argument was

there to be won. We know there are many of our fellow citizens who

remain to be convinced about the merits of independence. But we also

know that there is a majority for change in this country. Most of

those who heard the speech seemed to share their leader's optimism.

It is going to be a walkover from now on. It is on the way and it

can't be stopped. It has been handed to was on a plate, on his

sleeve. Delegates have repositioned their policy. Delegates are no

longer anti- NATO. But Alex Salmond knows he has a long way to go to

win over the Scottish public to independence. He will be hoping

that journey will be easier after this conference.

Detectives are still trying to trace a man who attacked the chief

-- Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper during a match against Leeds last

night. Chris Kirk and required treatment after being knocked to

the ground. The man then ran off. It followed violence seems between

both sets of fans. The FA has started an investigation.
