Good afternoon. Police say they've uncovered "very good" evidence that

may explain why a gunman shot dead teachers and 20 children at a

school in the United States. The gunman, named as Adam Lanza who was

20, shot his mother before going to his former school in Connecticut.

Police have today revealed he had to force his way into Sandy Hook

Elementary in Newtown before opening fire, killing the head

teacher and other staff as well as the children some as young as five.

Steve Kingstone is in Newtown for us. Steve.

Yes, Clive. The police say they have identified now all of the

victims in this shooting. Their bodies have been removed from the

school for postmortem analysis. We expect to get the names of those

victims through the police later today. The school itself, as you

could imagine, is a massive ongoing crime scene investigation. As you

said, the police now believe the gunman forced his way on to the

premises yesterday. Officers retrieved two handguns and one

semiautomatic rifle as they and we try to piece together what happened.

Someone shooting in the building. The police operator relays the

unfolding horror as armed SWAT teams enter the school. Units in

the building - I got bodies here. Witnesses say gunshots had rung out

over the school tannoy, prompting teachers to lock their classrooms

and order terrified children to hide under desks and in cupboards.

We kept hearing gun noises and "Put your hands up", and we just kept

hearing that. But while appearing calm, teachers were fearing the

worst. I am thinking that I almost have to be their parents like I

have to tell them - so I said to them, "I need you to know that I

love you all very much and that it's going to be OK." Because I

thought that was the last thing they were ever going to hear. I

thought we were all going to die. Dawn was the head teacher. She was

shot dead after going to investigate the noise together with

Mary Sherlack, the school psychologists, who was also killed.

27-year-old Mary Soto taught some of the youngest children and is

reported to have died trying to shield them. The youngest victims

were in two classrooms later identified by the clothes they had

been to school in. The detectives will certainly analyse everything

and put a complete picture together of the evidence that they did

obtain, and we're hopeful that it will paint a complete picture as to

how and why this entire unfortunate incident occurred. The police have

identified 20-year-old Adam Lanza as the killer, who then took his

own life. Schoolmates described him as bright, but withdrawn and

socially awkward, possibly with a personality disorder. He lived in

the well-heeled outskirts of Newtown with his mother in the

family home where her body was discovered yesterday. She was a

registered gun owner and had worked as a supply teacher at Sandy Hook

Elementary School. # I once was lost #

What happened here is testing the faith of the quiet rural community,

that always prided itself on being safe. Last night there were vigils

for the victims and their families, but alongside the spiritual,

political feeling is building, with grief driven calls for tighter gun

laws. Gun laws are intended for one thing, and we aren't living in a

war zone. We aren't living in a hunting range. We're living as

human beings together, so I hope this town would wake up to anything

that creates violence or hurts other people. As Newtown mourns,

the president has said again that America has been through this too

many times and that meaningful action is needed this scarred

community is looking to Washington to make that real.

Now, as to why this happened, the police a short time ago said they

found very good evidence inside the family home which may point to

motive. Presumably, that is some sort of correspondence or message

left by Adam Lanza. They have also spoken to his brother, who didn't

live in this state, but the brother of Adam Lanza says that the gunman

may have suffered from a personality disorder, possibly some

thank you. The family of the nurse who was

found dead in an apparent suicide after taking a prank call about the

Duchess of Cambridge say her death has left an "unfillable void" in

their lives. Jacintha Saldhana's husband and children were speaking

outside Westminster Cathedral, where they attended a special

service in her memory. From there, Richard Lister reports.

For the past week Jacintha Saldanha's family have been trying

to cope with the reality of life without her. They arrived at

Westminster Cathedral this morning to give thanks for her life, but

still with many questions about her death. The 46-year-old nurse was

found hanged in her lodgings just days after she was tricked by a

hoax phone call seeking details about the Duchess of Cambridge's

medical condition. Today, her husband described her as having

been the light in his darkness. loss is a very painful one, and

nobody can take that place in my life ever again. I love you and

miss you forever. Jacintha Saldanha's children also paid

tribute to their mother. We are shattered, and there's an unfidable

void in our lives. We love you, mum. Sleep in peace and please watch

over us until we meet again in heaven. The King Edward VII

Hospital released a statement last night stressing that she had not

been disciplined over the hoax call because, in their words, she was

the victim of a cruel trick. Jacintha Saldanha's body is being

flown back to India, the country where she was born. Her family said

today the funeral will be held on Monday.

Egyptians have begun voting on a new constitution which has divided

the country and sparked violent protests. The President, Mohammed

Morsi, is backing the draft document, but opponents say it

favours Islamists. Our correspondent Lyse Doucet is at a

polling station in the town of Heliopolis on the outskirts of

Cairo. Lyse. With all the controversy

surrounding this new stew, what's the turnout been like so far?

turnout has been huge. We have been at this polling station in the

north of Cairo since it opened at 8.00am, local time this morning,

6.00am GMT, and the queues have stretched right around the block,

both on the men's side of voting and on the women's side of voting.

They have had to extend the voting hours twice. There's still a few

more hours to vote, and it's not clear whether everyone here and at

polling stations across the country will be able to get inside to cast

their ballot in time. Everyone we speak to here said it absolutely

matters for them to vote on a charter that will define the future

character of the Egyptian state and society. Will it move towards an

Islamic state or towards greater democracy? That is where Egypt is

hospital after undergoing surgery for gallstones.

The South African government says the procedure was successful.The

former president, who's 94, was admitted over a week ago with a

lung infection. A second cruise ship has docked at

Southampton after some of its passengers became ill with the

Norovirus vomiting bug. Yesterday more than 400 cases were confirmed

on the P&O liner The Oriana. Meanwhile, several more hospitals

have been closing wards and turning away visitors in an effort to stop

the spread of the virus as Sophie Hutchinson reports.

Birmingham City Hospital, still closed to most visitors today. It's

part of the battle to concern this year's early surge in the winter

vomiting bug, or norovirus, which has affected a number of wards.

reason for doing this is to try to avoid the amount of traffic on site,

so people come in from the community and bring bugs in with

them as much as taking bugs out into the community. And there's

disruption at other hospitals across the UK. Dozens of individual

wards have been closed, including at this hospital in Wrexham in

North Wales, and visitors at a hospital in Maidstone in Kent

welcomed the restrictions. Personally, I think it's a good

idea. I mean, it seems to spread like wildfire, doesn't it?

course, yeah. What else are they going to sort of curb it? It's the

only way, isn't it? The norovirus, which causes vomiting and diarrhoea,

usually peaks between January and March, but figures this year are

already showing a sharp spike in infections with an increase of 72%

on the same period last year. The advice for anyone who thinks they

may have the norovirus is to stay at home and away from hospital. The

danger of going on to wards is that the virus is so highly infectious,

it could spread to the most vulnerable patients with serious

consequences. And it's not just hospitals that

have been hit. The cruise operator P&O has now had to deal with a

second outbreak just a short time after hundreds of passengers fell

ill on another liner. England's cricketers had a good

third day in the final test in India, but they had to be patient

before reducing their hosts to 297 for 8 at the close. England were

left frustrated for the first six hours of the day, Veerat Kohli

scoring a century in a partnership of 198 with captain MS Dhoney. But
