Flooding causes further damage and disruption in parts of the UK -

:00:06.:00:10.

hundreds of flood warnings and alerts are in force. The heavy rain

:00:10.:00:13.

has hit the south west of England, disrupting rail networks on one of

:00:13.:00:18.

the busiest weekends of the year. In Scotland, one of the most badly

:00:18.:00:20.

affected towns is Stonehaven, near Aberdeen, where dozens of people

:00:20.:00:30.
:00:30.:00:31.

have had to leave their homes. is just complete devastation and

:00:31.:00:36.

the people are traumatised now. Worcestershire Acute Hospital Trust

:00:36.:00:39.

apologises to families and pays nearly half a million pounds in

:00:39.:00:45.

compensation, for failings in care. And Swansea hold Manchester United

:00:45.:00:49.

to a draw, but the Reds are still four points clear at the top of the

:00:49.:00:59.
:00:59.:01:09.

Good evening. Flooding is causing severe disruption again across many

:01:09.:01:12.

parts of Britain, with more than 150 flood warnings in force and

:01:12.:01:17.

more heavy rain forecast tonight. The worst affected areas are in the

:01:17.:01:21.

south west of England, Wales and Scotland. Around 40 people have

:01:21.:01:24.

been moved from their homes in Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire after a

:01:24.:01:31.

river burst its banks. There's a severe flood warning for the south

:01:31.:01:33.

west of England, where there's also been extensive damage and

:01:33.:01:40.

disruption. Andrew Plant sent this report from just outside Exeter.

:01:41.:01:44.

They are tough enough to carry trains, but they buckled under the

:01:44.:01:49.

strength of this water. The rocks that support these railway sleepers

:01:49.:01:55.

simply swept away in its path. This main route disappearing under the

:01:55.:02:00.

river, cutting off much of the south-west of England. As soon as

:02:00.:02:04.

this water stops flowing, it will take engineers about 48 hours to

:02:04.:02:09.

get that piece of track replaced, and get this main line back up and

:02:09.:02:13.

running, but at the moment there is nothing they can do. The job now is

:02:13.:02:17.

to stop this water flowing further down the track, and stop it from

:02:18.:02:22.

reaching that building in the background. That is where the

:02:22.:02:27.

signalling his house, and if that is flooded it could be out for

:02:27.:02:33.

three weeks. Rescue workers used giant bags filled with water to

:02:33.:02:37.

divert this river back to its natural path, but as the water

:02:37.:02:41.

slowly lost its strength it became clear this major route would be out

:02:41.:02:50.

of action until after Christmas. This man owns the Chinese

:02:50.:02:54.

restaurant next door. Instead of serving Christmas parties, he is

:02:55.:03:03.

watching beer bottles bobbing on his dining room floor.

:03:03.:03:08.

insurance does not cover it because we are in the flood plain.

:03:09.:03:12.

Stonehaven, coastal defences were overwhelmed and rescue teams were

:03:12.:03:20.

helping people flooded from their homes. This was complete

:03:20.:03:24.

devastation and the people are traumatised now. In South Wales,

:03:24.:03:34.
:03:34.:03:35.

the Mini landslide smashed through the back door. Here in Devon, homes

:03:35.:03:40.

were evacuated, vehicles abandoned. The flood water pushing into

:03:40.:03:46.

people's houses just today's before Christmas. You have lost your home

:03:46.:03:50.

and your belongings, and you will never replace some of the valuables

:03:50.:03:55.

you have had. Seen from above, it is clear just how much water here

:03:55.:04:01.

has nowhere to go. For homeowners and emergency services are like, it

:04:01.:04:06.

is now simply a nervous wait for more rain tonight.

:04:06.:04:08.

The flooding has caused huge disruption to those hoping to

:04:08.:04:12.

travel on one of the busiest weekends of the year. The rain has

:04:12.:04:15.

caused delays on the roads and affected dozens of rail routes, as

:04:15.:04:24.

Daniel Boettcher reports. In places the flooding has not just blocked

:04:24.:04:28.

rail lines but swept away ballasts supporting the track, making it

:04:28.:04:33.

difficult to assess how long this will take to repair. The water has

:04:33.:04:38.

disrupted key services in and out of the south-west, leaving

:04:38.:04:42.

passengers having to make other plans or allow more time to get

:04:42.:04:48.

where they want to be. There was one point where to the left there

:04:48.:04:52.

was flooding, and to the right from a bird's-eye view it looked like a

:04:52.:04:57.

train going through a notion. will bite the bullet and go today

:04:57.:05:01.

because nobody wants to travel on Christmas Eve if they can help it.

:05:01.:05:05.

If I knew it would be difficult so I allowed extra time this end to go

:05:05.:05:14.

with the flow. First Great Western has been advising passengers not to

:05:14.:05:20.

travel west of Taunton unless there journey is essential. There are

:05:20.:05:23.

signs warning passengers of what lies ahead, and Network Rail says

:05:23.:05:28.

it is unlikely that flooded section of track will reopen tomorrow.

:05:28.:05:33.

is a mess. The weather has caused problems for drivers as well, many

:05:33.:05:39.

minor roads becoming impossible. This is one road in Somerset on

:05:39.:05:47.

apart by flooding. More overnight rain could bring disruption.

:05:47.:05:52.

ground is already saturated, so many parts will continue to be

:05:52.:05:57.

badly affected with the rain from the last few days. A tomorrow could

:05:57.:06:01.

prove to be another challenging day for travellers with long journeys

:06:01.:06:05.

ahead of them. And you can keep full up to date on

:06:05.:06:06.

the flooding by visiting bbc.co.uk/news and more

:06:06.:06:16.

specifically on the travel problems at bbc.co.uk/travelnews.

:06:16.:06:19.

The Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt says he's disgusted and appalled by

:06:19.:06:22.

the failures of care at Worcestershire Acute Hospital Trust.

:06:22.:06:25.

In one of the worst cases of mistreatment, an 84-year-old man

:06:25.:06:30.

starved to death at the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch. Other

:06:30.:06:34.

patients were left thirsty and unwashed. The Trust has apologised

:06:34.:06:42.

and will pay compensation. Ben Ando reports. Thirsty, but their drinks

:06:42.:06:49.

were left out of reach. Not washed for 11 weeks. Left to sit in their

:06:49.:06:53.

own excrement and in one case allowed to starve to death. These

:06:53.:06:57.

are just some of the many damning claims about standards of care at

:06:57.:07:02.

Alexandra Hospital in Redditch in Worcestershire. After legal action,

:07:02.:07:07.

the hospital now agrees the care was not good enough. Clare cross

:07:07.:07:12.

from Tewkesbury believes her 78 year-old father, David, was

:07:12.:07:17.

neglected. He was suffering from Alzheimer's and died in 20th

:07:17.:07:22.

December 10. She didn't complain at the time but now wishes she had.

:07:22.:07:26.

bitterly regret not complaining about it officially. At the time I

:07:27.:07:31.

didn't because there was so much going on and he needed a lot of

:07:31.:07:35.

care. We didn't actually make an official complaint, which I do

:07:35.:07:40.

regret. I feel like I let him down. A in a statement, the Health

:07:40.:07:50.
:07:50.:07:57.

Last month, the trust wrote to the families and patients involved and

:07:57.:08:04.

apologised for the lack of care. They also said around 10,000 each

:08:04.:08:09.

in compensation. The managers have not admitted any legal liability.

:08:09.:08:15.

As a response, significant changes have been made to make sure patient

:08:15.:08:18.

care is excellent, which is resulting in the trust currently

:08:18.:08:22.

producing a standard hospital mortality index below the national

:08:22.:08:27.

average. The government says it is also looking at a way for patients

:08:27.:08:31.

to give immediate feedback about the care they are receiving,

:08:31.:08:34.

offering an early warning about the kind of neglect the took place at

:08:34.:08:42.

the Helen -- Alexandra Hospital. Anti-government activists in Syria

:08:42.:08:45.

say dozens of people have died in an air strike in the central

:08:45.:08:49.

province of Hama. The air strike is reported to have hit a bakery in

:08:49.:08:51.

the town of Halfaya which was recently seized by rebels. Women

:08:51.:08:54.

and children are reported to be among the dead.

:08:54.:08:55.

The Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Bernard Hogan-Howe,

:08:55.:08:58.

has promised what he describes as a "ruthless search for the truth"

:08:58.:09:01.

into what led to the resignation of the former Chief Whip Andrew

:09:01.:09:05.

Mitchell. Mr Mitchell quit after being accused of calling police in

:09:05.:09:15.
:09:15.:09:18.

Downing Street "plebs" - something he denies. The commissioner has

:09:18.:09:22.

curtailed his Christmas break, we have had Andrew Mitchell's own

:09:22.:09:27.

account in the newspapers this morning. Where are we on this?

:09:27.:09:34.

Let's step back - who would have believed that there was an attempt

:09:34.:09:40.

for him to take his bicycle out of these gates and a cabinet minister

:09:40.:09:43.

resigned under pressure from the Metropolitan Police. Today there

:09:43.:09:48.

have been big developments - Andrew Mitchell says the allegation that

:09:48.:09:52.

he used the word plebs was a deliberate attempt to destroy his

:09:52.:09:57.

political career. Secondly, a former police minister says this

:09:57.:10:01.

could reveal the degree of corruption in some elements of the

:10:01.:10:04.

police, and thirdly the Metropolitan Police Commissioner

:10:04.:10:07.

has broken off his Christmas break not to deal with some terrorist

:10:07.:10:13.

atrocity but to deal with the fall- out from this. Despite these

:10:13.:10:16.

developments, there is one fundamental disagreement at the

:10:16.:10:21.

core of this. The official police report still says Andrew Mitchell

:10:21.:10:24.

called the police plebs, he says he didn't and there has been no

:10:24.:10:28.

evidence to prove it either way. In sport, just two matches in the

:10:28.:10:31.

Premier League today, Chelsea are currently leading 3-0 at home to

:10:31.:10:34.

Aston Villa, while earlier Manchester United were held to a 1-

:10:34.:10:37.

1 draw away at Swansea, which means they are now four points clear at

:10:37.:10:46.

the top of the table as Patrick Gearey reports. Christmas number

:10:47.:10:51.

one again. Manchester United are often chart-toppers at this time of

:10:51.:10:56.

year. They are predictable, but not boring. United were scoring goals

:10:56.:11:06.
:11:06.:11:14.

from everywhere, the -- Patrice Evra with this one. For a time, it

:11:14.:11:18.

Manchester United were being outplayed, but with Robin Van

:11:18.:11:28.
:11:28.:11:28.

Persie they are always a threat. He was to be denied later, but given

:11:28.:11:31.

his earlier headache, his boss thought he had reasons to be

:11:31.:11:41.

thankful. Robin Van Persie is very lucky to be alive, he could have

:11:41.:11:45.

had a broken neck. The draw is not too painful, particularly when they

:11:45.:11:48.

look at the table. First there was Gangnam Style and

:11:48.:11:51.

its one billion Youtube hits. Now there's One Pound Fish Man, also

:11:51.:11:55.

known as Shahid Nazir, who recorded his music video while working at an

:11:55.:11:59.

East London market. It's been viewed by millions on the internet,

:11:59.:12:02.

and Aleem Maqbool has been to meet his biggest fans - his family in

:12:02.:12:12.
:12:12.:12:15.

Pakistan. In case you haven't seen it, this is the video that went

:12:15.:12:23.

viral and made Shahid Nazir the star. He had been in the UK Fourie

:12:23.:12:27.

year and was selling fish in a market in the east End of London,

:12:27.:12:33.

but because of this clip has now been signed up to sing a song that

:12:33.:12:41.

is now in the chart. This is where Shahid Nazir is from in Pakistan,

:12:41.:12:46.

so let's see if his fame has spread here. Who better to ask than this

:12:46.:12:55.

fishmonger. Yes, he definitely knows him, and it seems the whole

:12:55.:13:02.

town does this well. In the market, we found shops blasting out the

:13:02.:13:07.

tune. It is obvious Shahid Nazir has become something of a local

:13:07.:13:15.

hero. On the street where he grow up, the children all wanted to show

:13:15.:13:25.

us they knew the song. His family have been shocked by what has

:13:25.:13:29.

happened. His wife and children are still here, excited he will be home

:13:29.:13:34.

to visit next week and they are willing him to get the Christmas

:13:34.:13:39.

number one first. If you think I am going to sing, you are wrong but

:13:39.:13:43.

there is no shortage of people wanting to in his family. Let me

:13:43.:13:52.
