The clutch in Scotland apoll sqriess for three decades of abuse at a

:00:08.:00:13.

boarding school, calling it bitter, shaming, and distressing.

:00:13.:00:16.

The apology follows a BBC investigation which uncovered

:00:16.:00:22.

evidence of physical violence and sexual assault by monks at the Fort

:00:22.:00:26.

Augustus school. A message of hope and moderation from Iran's new

Gibraltar hits back at the Spanish Government after it considers

:00:34.:00:37.

punitive measures over fishing rights.

:00:37.:00:42.

What next for Zimbabwe as Robert Mugabe's re-elected President with a

:00:42.:00:47.

two thirds majority? Bad light and rain leave the

:00:48.:00:51.

Australians frustrated, and England relieved after an exciting fourth

:00:51.:01:01.
:01:01.:01:16.

Good evening. A senior member of the Catholic Church in Scotland has

:01:16.:01:20.

apologised for a he called the bitter distressing and shameful

:01:20.:01:26.

abuse of pupils at a boarding school run by monks. The Bishop of Aberdeen

:01:26.:01:29.

gave a mass days after a BBC Scotland investigation uncovered

:01:29.:01:32.

three deck ate last year's Olympic road race aids of physical and

:01:32.:01:36.

sexual abuse at the local Abbey school and its Prepatory School.

:01:36.:01:40.

Both have since closed and the cases of abuse are being investigated by

:01:40.:01:45.

the police. This report from James Shaw.

:01:45.:01:52.

The parish church at Fort Augustus on lockness where the bishop

:01:52.:01:55.

apologised for decades of abuse, suffered by boys at a boarding

:01:55.:02:02.

school run by the Benedictine order of monks. It is a most bitter, and

:02:02.:02:06.

distressing and shameful thing, that in this former Abbey school there

:02:06.:02:15.

were a small number of baptised, consecrated, ordained Christian men,

:02:15.:02:19.

who physically or sexually abused those in their charge.

:02:19.:02:23.

In the village of Fort Augustus, people expressed their outrage,

:02:23.:02:27.

about what has happened at the school.

:02:27.:02:31.

Is getting done about it. It seems to be swept under the table. It is

:02:31.:02:35.

the right thing to do but more needs to be done than an apology for all

:02:35.:02:39.

the people that suffered. The allegations stretch from the

:02:39.:02:44.

1950s, all the way to the 1990s, when the school closed.

:02:44.:02:49.

Five former pupils, identify one monk in particular, who they accuse

:02:49.:02:52.

of sexual abuse, including in some cases rape.

:02:53.:02:58.

In total more than 20 men claim abuse by at least ten monks. This

:02:58.:03:02.

former pupil says he was a victim of abuse, and has waited a long time

:03:03.:03:08.

for the church to address what happened to him I have had nearly 60

:03:08.:03:13.

years of having to deal with this, on a daily basis, on a dale lay

:03:13.:03:18.

basis I have had to swallow anger and fear, and regret at my lost

:03:18.:03:24.

childhood. So my reaction is that the apology is thin and has only

:03:24.:03:28.

come because they have their arms up their back. One of the priests

:03:28.:03:34.

facing allegations of abuse was tracked down in Australia, by a BBC

:03:34.:03:37.

Scotland investigation. Get off my property or I will call the cops,

:03:37.:03:42.

OK. And back in Scotland, the church is still dealing with the fall out

:03:42.:03:48.

from the resignation of Cardinal Keith O'Brien, who stood down after

:03:48.:03:52.

allegations of inappropriate sexual behaviour towards priests.

:03:52.:03:57.

This has been a bad year for the Catholic Church in Scotland. One

:03:57.:04:01.

scandal has followed another. This autumn the church will begin

:04:01.:04:05.

publishing a full audit of sexual abuse allegations against priests

:04:06.:04:09.

but as the bishop acknowledged today, the problems could run far

:04:09.:04:16.

deeper than that. And our religious affairs

:04:16.:04:21.

correspondent joins us now. What do you make of this apology? I think it

:04:21.:04:24.

underlines the church's wish and need to draw a line under the events

:04:24.:04:28.

of cent weeks and start rebuilding its reputation. We are looking at a

:04:28.:04:34.

new pattern of apology, it was delivered promptly. He emphasised

:04:34.:04:40.

the need for transparency and the welfare for the victims. He has come

:04:40.:04:44.

back from World Youth Day in Brazil. Is there the hallmark of the

:04:44.:04:47.

Vatican's new approach on this is this it is true to say in the past

:04:47.:04:51.

where churches have prevaricated, the US UK, and Ireland, the

:04:51.:04:55.

reputational damage, the damage to credibility has been the greatest. I

:04:55.:05:00.

think the victims' groups will only be satisfied when it is not the BBC

:05:00.:05:05.

uncovering abuse but the church itself.

:05:05.:05:09.

The state United States has congratulated Hassan Rouhani on his

:05:09.:05:12.

inauguration at Iran's new President. It said it would be a

:05:12.:05:16.

willing partner to his anticipated reforms. The cleric said the people

:05:16.:05:21.

of Iran had voted yes to moderation and hope. He has promised to advance

:05:21.:05:25.

women's rights and freedoms and reduce the Government's interference

:05:25.:05:30.

in people's lives. The cleric who once studied in

:05:30.:05:34.

Glasgow has been sworn in as the seventh President of the Islamic

:05:34.:05:39.

republic. Hassan Rouhani inauguration was

:05:39.:05:43.

witnessed by Iran's ally, including North Korea.

:05:43.:05:49.

He inherits a job with little formal power. But crucially, the presidency

:05:49.:05:54.

comes with a stage, and the chance to set a new tone.

:05:54.:06:01.

He used his pulpit to send a message to Washington.

:06:01.:06:05.

TRANSLATION: In international interactions my Government will try

:06:05.:06:10.

to build mutual trust between Iran and the regional and global

:06:11.:06:13.

countries. And this way we will improve our

:06:13.:06:19.

national and regional security. All very well, but to see who really

:06:19.:06:24.

runs Iran, note who had the only chair at yesterday's endorsement

:06:24.:06:29.

ceremony. The supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei. He sits above

:06:29.:06:34.

all others. Hassan Rouhani makes do with a seat on the floor.

:06:34.:06:38.

He has promised a new start for his country. First of all, he has to fix

:06:39.:06:43.

the economy. It has been hit by the effects of international sanctions.

:06:43.:06:49.

To get those sanctions lifted, the President may have to start talks

:06:49.:06:54.

about Iran's nuclear programme with the United States. We will have to

:06:54.:07:01.

do it actually, both sides are going to have to bite the bullet, and sit

:07:01.:07:04.

down. I don't see it happening tomorrow.

:07:04.:07:08.

The White House says it will be a willing partner in the new President

:07:08.:07:13.

is serious about negotiations. But Hassan Rouhani can't make

:07:13.:07:17.

concessionsings, on his own. For that -- concessions on his own. For

:07:17.:07:22.

that he needs the approval of the Mohammad Khatami. The Government's

:07:22.:07:27.

of Spain and Gibraltar are locked in a very public row in a dispute over

:07:27.:07:31.

fishing ground. The Spanish foreign minister said he is considering

:07:31.:07:35.

bringing in a fee for border crossing and closing Spain's

:07:35.:07:39.

airspace. The Government of Gibraltar has described the comment

:07:39.:07:43.

as reminiscent of the fascist regime led by Franco. Our political

:07:43.:07:47.

correspondent is at the Foreign Office for us now. What is the UK

:07:47.:07:52.

government's response then? ? message from the Foreign Office is

:07:52.:07:56.

much calmer in its tone. In a statement it is saying the UK has

:07:56.:07:59.

many common interests with Spain and a strong relationship, but on the

:07:59.:08:01.

fundamental point, about the future of Gibraltar and sovereignty, they

:08:01.:08:04.

are making it clear there is no change at all. The Prime Minister

:08:04.:08:08.

has made it clear the UK Government will not compromise on sovereignty

:08:08.:08:11.

they are saying tonight. We have seen the escalation over recent

:08:11.:08:16.

week, it started about a row over fishing boats. Now there is charging

:08:16.:08:19.

Gibraltar to enter Spain and this weekend, the Spanish Foreign

:08:19.:08:22.

Minister said the party is over for the people of Gibraltar, just talk

:08:22.:08:28.

about the moment but certainly I think that will lead to the threat

:08:28.:08:32.

of certainly Gibraltar. An increased air of uncertainty. But on that

:08:32.:08:35.

fundamental. The future of Gibraltar, the Foreign Office clear

:08:35.:08:38.

tonight, even the idea of discussion about sovereignty not only the

:08:38.:08:43.

table. -- on the table.

:08:43.:08:52.

The US has extended the closure of some embassies ate Consulates over

:08:52.:08:56.

fears Al-Qaeda may be planning an attack. Security has been tighten

:08:56.:08:59.

round British embassies and other western countries, in Yemen. Mary

:08:59.:09:03.

Beard says she has received more threats on twitter today, including

:09:03.:09:09.

one of rape. It comes as some Twitter users have taken part in a

:09:09.:09:14.

boycott to protest against so-called internet trolls who send abusive and

:09:14.:09:18.

threatening messages. Now, to Zimbabwe, where African and western

:09:18.:09:23.

countries remain at odds over what to do about Robert Mugabe's disputed

:09:23.:09:26.

election victory. Germany and Australia have joined Britain,

:09:26.:09:30.

America and the European Union, expressing concern about allegations

:09:30.:09:34.

of vote rigging. But the South African President, and the African

:09:34.:09:38.

Union have urged all sides in Zimbabwe to accept the results. In

:09:38.:09:43.

Harare attention is turning to what the ruling party will do with its

:09:43.:09:48.

majority. This report contains some flash photography. The people have

:09:48.:09:53.

spoken. But no-one is celebrating here.

:09:53.:09:58.

The result was shocking. Unexpected results.

:09:58.:10:02.

I don't have a party I am supporting because it never works here in

:10:02.:10:06.

Zimbabwe. Memories of Zimbabwe's economic collapse and hyper

:10:06.:10:09.

inflation four years ago are still very fresh.

:10:09.:10:13.

This is what people fear, from this ZANU-PF Government. They will have

:10:13.:10:17.

do a lot to reassure people, that the same ZANU-PF that brought the

:10:17.:10:21.

economy and the country to its knees, 15 years ago, is not the same

:10:21.:10:26.

ZANU-PF that will be in control now. The power-sharing Government formed

:10:26.:10:32.

in 2008 has now ended. Robert Mugabe is once again

:10:32.:10:36.

Zimbabwe's President. Congratulations are pouring in, and

:10:36.:10:42.

now questions too about the conduct of the selection -- this election.

:10:42.:10:46.

So more unhappy power-sharing, the responsibility for repairing this

:10:46.:10:49.

country's damaged economy lies squarely with ZANU-PF.

:10:49.:10:54.

But all the coffers are now empty. But should Zimbabweans be worried?

:10:54.:11:00.

don't think so. I don't believe so. I think that can only come from

:11:00.:11:04.

opponents who would like to see us fail and people who would like to

:11:04.:11:09.

create this impression we are doomed to fail economically. That is not

:11:09.:11:13.

the case. Robert Mugabe will be sworn in as President and his party

:11:13.:11:17.

now holds a two thirds majority in Parliament which will enable them to

:11:17.:11:21.

change the constitution. Zimbabwe's opposition has said they

:11:21.:11:25.

will challenge the result. But the country's ageing leader has proved

:11:25.:11:35.
:11:35.:11:36.

he still has fight left in him. Well, they are facing that have

:11:36.:11:40.

helped to define generation, the various incarnations of Doctor Who,

:11:40.:11:44.

TV viewers have cheered on as they battle with Daleks and Cybermen, and

:11:44.:11:49.

tonight, the Time Lord's 11th regeneration has been revealed. If

:11:49.:11:53.

you missed it it is Peter Capaldi, who is picking up the sonic

:11:53.:11:59.

screwdriver. Lives sew was at the unveiling. The show's host Zoe Ball

:11:59.:12:04.

Gay the news so many fans have been waiting to hear. Please welcome the

:12:04.:12:12.

12th doctor, a hero for a whole new generation. It's... Peter Capaldi.

:12:12.:12:17.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE He was the only actor to be

:12:17.:12:21.

considered for the part, and he spoke about his preparations for the

:12:21.:12:26.

audition. Even though I am a lifelong fan, I haven't play played

:12:26.:12:31.

Doctor Who since I was nine in the playground. So as an adult actor I

:12:31.:12:37.

have nerve worked on it. I downloaded some old script scripts

:12:37.:12:41.

from the internet and practises those in front of the mirror.

:12:41.:12:46.

will be seen as a brave choice, he is 25 years older that their current

:12:46.:12:50.

doctor Matt Smith and is of course best known for a very different

:12:50.:12:55.

role, the foul mouthed spin-doctor Malcolm Tucker in The Thick Of It

:12:55.:12:59.

have more on my plate than a spin sever at a wedding. That wasn't a

:12:59.:13:03.

reference to your daughter. He is a lifelong fan of the show. When he

:13:03.:13:07.

was 15 the Radio Times published a letter he had written praising the

:13:07.:13:14.

programme and five years ago he went to appear in it, opposite the tenth

:13:14.:13:18.

doctor David Tennant. An invitation that has taken on a greater

:13:18.:13:21.

significance. Peter Capaldi. As he prepares for the challenge, of

:13:21.:13:25.

taking oen a part that is not like any he has played in the past, and

:13:26.:13:29.

which carries a greater weight of expectation than anything he has

:13:30.:13:33.

done before. He will make his first appearance in this year's Christmas

:13:33.:13:38.

special, and then his first full episodes will go out in 2014, when

:13:38.:13:42.

the BBC will hope Peter Capaldi will prove to be as popular as his

:13:42.:13:48.

predecessors. I think he will. With all the sport

:13:48.:13:53.

now here is Damien Johnson. Good evening. England's hopes of

:13:53.:13:57.

saving the Third Test and holding on the Ashes increase significantly

:13:57.:14:01.

when rain and bad light ended play early on day four at Old Trafford.

:14:02.:14:06.

Australia were 172 for subpoena seven and overall lead of 331. They

:14:06.:14:10.

have to win the match to keep the series alive. England only need a

:14:10.:14:16.

draw to retain the Ashes. Australia had two opponents of

:14:16.:14:20.

course England stood against them but in the background, that nagging

:14:20.:14:25.

ticking clock ing. It takes time to win a Test Match. Under blue morning

:14:25.:14:30.

skies Australia needed rapid wickets. England attacked. This four

:14:30.:14:34.

had added significance because it cut Australia's lead to below 200.

:14:34.:14:38.

No follow on. Australia would have to worry about batting again. The

:14:38.:14:44.

crowd knew it. By the time England's innings ended, Australia were 179

:14:45.:14:49.

ahead. David Warner took the catch and ran off to put on his pads. As

:14:49.:14:55.

drizzle danced round the ground, Warner known as the walk about punch

:14:55.:15:00.

puncher did some legitimate big hitting. Those who recall his

:15:00.:15:03.

attempt to hit Joe Root earlier there was a delicious touch to his

:15:04.:15:08.

demise, on 41, caught in the deep by Root. Let us call it a technical

:15:08.:15:16.

knock out. . Yes, hooked another one. Out of all the people on the

:15:16.:15:22.

field it is comical, I will wait to read Twitter later. While the

:15:22.:15:26.

umpires called off the fight to Michael Clarke's fury. They said it

:15:26.:15:30.

was unsafe to continue with Australia 331 ahead. By 5.00 the bad

:15:30.:15:35.

light turned to serious rain, and the spectators -- spectators were

:15:35.:15:42.

only heading one way, home. So would England be able to retain the Ashes?

:15:42.:15:48.

More than happy, if it did, then great, but, you know, it was meant

:15:48.:15:53.

to start raining at 1.00 and it didn't. So forecasts in England are

:15:53.:15:58.

pretty good at being wrong. True, but as Australia may learn no amount

:15:58.:16:02.

of creativity will ever beat the weather.

:16:02.:16:06.

Fran Halsall has won Great Britain's first medal at the World Swimming

:16:06.:16:09.

Championships. Having just missed out on a podium finish last night

:16:09.:16:16.

she took bronze in the 50 metres freestyle in Barcelona. She came in

:16:16.:16:21.

third. Tonight, I would like to have gone a

:16:21.:16:27.

bit faster. I was In It To Win It. I am as by disappointed but it was a

good swim under pressure. viewers in Scotland sports scene

what astronaut need to get used to. In the early hours of the morn he

was blasted into space, aboard this Japanese rocket. Destination, the

International Space Station. Back on earth his twin brother was

getting rather excited. That is one small step for a robot

The tiny robot has been sent into space as a companion for Japan's
