The SNP leader says a "yes" vote for Scottish independence would be a | :00:00. | :00:11.
mark of national self-confidence. Alex Salmond tries to reach out | :00:12. | :00:14.
beyond his party's traditional supporters with less than a year to | :00:15. | :00:19.
go to the referendum. If not us, then who? If not now, then when? | :00:20. | :00:26.
Friends, we are Scotland's independent generation and our time | :00:27. | :00:31.
is now. Also in the programme: | :00:32. | :00:35.
Tensions in the Cabinet emerge tonight as Nick Clegg criticises the | :00:36. | :00:39.
Government's free schools policy. The hunt for the parents of a | :00:40. | :00:42.
four-year-girl discovered in a Roma camp in Greece. | :00:43. | :00:47.
Ten skydivers and their pilot are killed in a plane crash in Belgium. | :00:48. | :00:52.
And a world record price for the violin that was played as the | :00:53. | :00:54.
Titanic went down. Good evening. The leader of the | :00:55. | :01:19.
Scottish National Party has said a vote for independence would be an | :01:20. | :01:22.
act of national self-confidence and self-belief. Alex Salmond was | :01:23. | :01:26.
speaking at the SNP's Conference in Perth, with less than a year to go | :01:27. | :01:30.
until the independence referendum. He also revealed that the Scottish | :01:31. | :01:33.
Government's blueprint for independence would be published next | :01:34. | :01:38.
month. 11 months to go and the independence | :01:39. | :01:43.
debate is hotting up. In the cake shop next to the conference, they | :01:44. | :01:47.
are turning over the issues, pondering which way to vote. Will | :01:48. | :01:51.
Scotland say "yes" or "no" next September? It turns out Alex Salmond | :01:52. | :01:59.
is off the cakes, apparently he is on a health kick. My diet is a bit | :02:00. | :02:02.
like the cause of Scottish independence. We have travelled a | :02:03. | :02:06.
substantial way but we have still got a job to do! No, his mind is on | :02:07. | :02:10.
the main course, a White Paper setting out the vision for | :02:11. | :02:15.
independence. It would be published on 26th November and it comes with a | :02:16. | :02:18.
challenge. So here is the deal, Prime Minister. We'll publish the | :02:19. | :02:23.
White Paper, then you and I must debate, Prime Minister to First | :02:24. | :02:34.
Minister. Mr Salmond said bread-and-butter issues will win the | :02:35. | :02:40.
referendum. Let us pledge that never again will wages of the lowest-paid | :02:41. | :02:44.
in Scotland fail to keep up with the cost-of-living. Alex Salmond knows | :02:45. | :02:48.
the "yes" campaign is struggling in the polls so he made this appeal to | :02:49. | :02:53.
voters outside the hall. Independence is not at its heart | :02:54. | :02:57.
about this party, or this administration, or this First | :02:58. | :03:01.
Minister, but about fundamental democratic choice for Scotland, the | :03:02. | :03:05.
people's right to choose Government of their own. They were delighted, | :03:06. | :03:12.
but they don't need convincing. Alex Salmond hopes that the debate about | :03:13. | :03:16.
independence is about to enter a new phase. He knows the White Paper | :03:17. | :03:21.
could be crucial and he hopes, he hopes that it could turn the tide. | :03:22. | :03:29.
It's emerged tonight there are serious tensions in the Cabinet over | :03:30. | :03:32.
the issue of free schools in England. The Deputy Prime Minister, | :03:33. | :03:35.
Nick Clegg, has expressed what's been described as "strong | :03:36. | :03:38.
differences of opinion" with his Conservative coalition partners. | :03:39. | :03:41.
With me now is our political correspondent, Iain Watson. | :03:42. | :03:46.
What more can you tell us? Nick Clegg is giving a big speech on | :03:47. | :03:50.
education policy later this week. We have seen extracts from that speech. | :03:51. | :03:56.
He will commit the Lib Dems to imposing the National Curriculum to | :03:57. | :04:00.
free schools. At the moment, they have discretion over what to teach. | :04:01. | :04:04.
Beyond that, he will say that these schools must employ qualified | :04:05. | :04:08.
teachers, teachers that are in the process of being qualified and they | :04:09. | :04:12.
should adhere to certain standards on school meals. He's argued for | :04:13. | :04:17.
these changes in Cabinet but he's been backed by Michael Gove. His | :04:18. | :04:22.
allies say that Nick Clegg doesn't understand the nature of free | :04:23. | :04:25.
schools. The Liberal Democrat Leader's intervention comes after a | :04:26. | :04:30.
week of bad publicity for free schools. The resignation of an | :04:31. | :04:36.
unqualified teacher in a school in Westminster. The Government would | :04:37. | :04:38.
say the free schools policy is helping parents choose schools | :04:39. | :04:41.
rather than the other way around. They are committed to continuing | :04:42. | :04:45.
that policy. We will see a divergence of Lib Dem and | :04:46. | :04:51.
Conservative policy in 2015. Police in Greece are trying to | :04:52. | :04:54.
identify a four-year-old girl with blond hair, who they believe may | :04:55. | :04:58.
have been snatched from her parents. They found her in a Roma settlement | :04:59. | :05:03.
last Wednesday. DNA tests show she's not related to the couple she was | :05:04. | :05:06.
living with, at the camp near Farsala. Police believe the child | :05:07. | :05:09.
may be a victim of abduction or child trafficking. | :05:10. | :05:17.
Four-year-old and possibly a victim of international trafficking. It was | :05:18. | :05:23.
her blond hair and pale complexion that alerted police to Maria. She | :05:24. | :05:27.
stood out in the Roma camp in central Greece where she was found | :05:28. | :05:31.
during a routine police sweep. The couple claiming to be her parents | :05:32. | :05:35.
changed their story several times and produced papers that said they | :05:36. | :05:40.
had six children in the space of ten months. After DNA analysis showed no | :05:41. | :05:45.
link with Maria, they were arrested, charged with abduction. The | :05:46. | :05:49.
four-year-old is now being cared for by a charity whose director fears | :05:50. | :05:55.
that she may have been trafficked. She was either taken in maternity or | :05:56. | :06:06.
abducted for begging, or later for prostitution, or even worse, for | :06:07. | :06:10.
selling for other purposes. You must have been shocked when you heard | :06:11. | :06:13.
what was happening? Shocked when you see a child being exposed like this. | :06:14. | :06:28.
Around 300,000 Roma live in Greece, often in poor conditions. | :06:29. | :06:32.
Authorities say several other cases of unusual-looking children in | :06:33. | :06:36.
settlements have been reported now. There have long been allegations of | :06:37. | :06:41.
children sold into Roma communities here. But the lawyer for this couple | :06:42. | :06:46.
has told me that Maria was given to them by a woman who could not care | :06:47. | :06:51.
for her, that she was not abducted and they are distraught from their | :06:52. | :06:56.
legitimately adopted child. Kate and Gerry McCann say this case has given | :06:57. | :07:00.
them hope that their daughter, Madeleine, may be found alive six | :07:01. | :07:04.
years after she disappeared in Portugal. And the sister of another | :07:05. | :07:11.
British toddler, Ben Needham, says this shows they shouldn't give up. | :07:12. | :07:18.
It is a big step for us. Cases like this prove that it can happen and | :07:19. | :07:22.
they can be found and there can be positive outcomes. It gives us great | :07:23. | :07:28.
hope that one day this will be Ben. An international appeal about Maria | :07:29. | :07:32.
has prompted over 5,000 calls here. But for now, exactly what happened | :07:33. | :07:37.
to this little girl remains a mystery. | :07:38. | :07:43.
Ten skydivers and their pilot have been killed in a plane crash in | :07:44. | :07:46.
southern Belgium. Witnesses say the aircraft suddenly lost height just | :07:47. | :07:50.
after take-off and came down in a field. | :07:51. | :07:58.
These are the first images that show the torn and twisted wreckage of a | :07:59. | :08:03.
light aircraft lying in a field just 200 metres from a residential | :08:04. | :08:07.
neighbourhood. It had crashed minutes after taking off, 40 miles | :08:08. | :08:14.
south-east of Brussels. Ten civilian parachutists and a pilot were killed | :08:15. | :08:17.
instantly. They must have known for some minutes they were in trouble. | :08:18. | :08:21.
One eyewitness described seeing the plane fly over him with pieces | :08:22. | :08:24.
falling off it. The wing was found almost a mile from the scene of the | :08:25. | :08:28.
accident. There are reports four of those on board were spotted | :08:29. | :08:31.
desperately trying to escape the plane as it began losing height. It | :08:32. | :08:40.
felt so -- fell so quickly they had no time to open their parachutes. | :08:41. | :08:45.
The aircraft was similar to this one. Usually, the perfect platform | :08:46. | :08:50.
from which to skydive. No names or nationalities of the dead have been | :08:51. | :08:55.
released. The Belgian Prime Minister has sent his sincere condolences to | :08:56. | :09:02.
the families of the victims. The Government has defended its | :09:03. | :09:05.
high-speed rail project after claims that it could lead to huge financial | :09:06. | :09:08.
losses for parts of the United Kingdom. The BBC has obtained | :09:09. | :09:11.
figures from a Government-commissioned report | :09:12. | :09:13.
suggesting areas away from the planned line could lose hundreds of | :09:14. | :09:23.
millions of pounds every year. It's the railway line which the | :09:24. | :09:28.
Government boasts will boost Britain's economy by ?15 billion a | :09:29. | :09:33.
year. But the report in which that claim was made is facing accusations | :09:34. | :09:38.
of playing down the economic impact of the line on some areas. So, while | :09:39. | :09:43.
the report told us the prize for the winners, like Greater Manchester, | :09:44. | :09:47.
West Yorkshire and Greater London, it didn't tell us the cost to the | :09:48. | :09:52.
losers, in places like Aberdeen, Cambridge and Bristol. Campaigners | :09:53. | :09:58.
say that omission shows the report overstated the benefits of HS2. We | :09:59. | :10:02.
are not surprised that the Government has tried to downplay the | :10:03. | :10:06.
negatives on HS2. They have done it time and time again. We think now is | :10:07. | :10:10.
the time for them to stop, look at the reality of the situation and | :10:11. | :10:15.
cancel HS2. The report's author, KPMG, say the negative impact HS2 | :10:16. | :10:21.
might have on some areas was reflected in maps included in the | :10:22. | :10:25.
report. Although without the detail revealed by these figures. Ministers | :10:26. | :10:30.
point out that HS2 will account for just a quarter of transport | :10:31. | :10:34.
investment over the five years from 2015. All of this investment that we | :10:35. | :10:42.
are looking at is to serve the whole of the United Kingdom, to make the | :10:43. | :10:46.
United Kingdom a place where we attract investment so we get jobs | :10:47. | :10:50.
from other countries into this country. The campaign against HS2 | :10:51. | :10:58.
has so far been concentrated around the areas affected by its | :10:59. | :11:01.
construction. But these figures could widen the opposition to parts | :11:02. | :11:05.
of the country that the line won't go anywhere near. | :11:06. | :11:10.
The violin played to calm passengers as the Titanic was sinking has been | :11:11. | :11:14.
sold at auction in Wiltshire for ?900,000, a world record. It was | :11:15. | :11:20.
reported to have been found at sea a week after the disaster in 1912, | :11:21. | :11:24.
strapped to the body of the ship's bandmaster. | :11:25. | :11:34.
At ?80,000... The violin that's as much about myths as music. Said to | :11:35. | :11:41.
be the Holy Grail of Titanic memorabilia. As one of the | :11:42. | :11:45.
instruments that played on as the Titanic floundered, it became part | :11:46. | :11:50.
of its legend. Its owner was Wallace Hartley, who inspired his fellow | :11:51. | :11:54.
band-members to carry on their music to calm the passengers. As the | :11:55. | :12:01.
Titanic went down, his courage ensured he and his violin would | :12:02. | :12:06.
become integral players in the ship's legacy. ?250,000... That is | :12:07. | :12:13.
why whilst some have questioned the violin's authenticity, it didn't | :12:14. | :12:18.
take long for the numbers to start climbing. Bidders in the room were | :12:19. | :12:21.
soon left trailing by the serious money on the phones. Up-and-up it | :12:22. | :12:30.
went... For the second time... Until this? At ?900,000, going... A new | :12:31. | :12:38.
world record from an anonymous buyer believed to be British. It is the | :12:39. | :12:45.
iconic instrument everyone knows that the band went down playing. | :12:46. | :12:52.
?900,000 is a world record for any Titanic item. | :12:53. | :12:56.
When you add in buyer's premium and VAT the price paid for this will be | :12:57. | :13:05.
over ?1 million. This is an instrument of history. | :13:06. | :13:14.
With all the sport, here's Ollie Foster at the BBC Sport Centre. Many | :13:15. | :13:20.
thanks. There were 27 goals in the eight | :13:21. | :13:24.
Premier League matches today. You can see them all on Match of the Day | :13:25. | :13:28.
straight after the news, but if you want to know the results, then keep | :13:29. | :13:31.
on watching and listening for the next minute or so. Arsenal are now | :13:32. | :13:35.
two points clear at the top of the table after a 4-1 win over Norwich, | :13:36. | :13:39.
Mesut Ozil got two goals. Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey also | :13:40. | :13:42.
scored. Norwich remain in the bottom three. | :13:43. | :13:44.
Here are all today's results, Chelsea are up to second in the | :13:45. | :13:48.
table after they beat Cardiff 4-1. Everton beat Hull 2-1. Manchester | :13:49. | :13:52.
United let in a late goal at home to Southampton for a 1-1 draw. | :13:53. | :13:55.
Liverpool drop to third in the table after a draw at ten-man Newcastle. | :13:56. | :13:58.
Stoke-West Brom was goalless. Gus Poyet's first game in charge of | :13:59. | :14:01.
bottom club Sunderland finished with a 4-0 defeat at Swansea and Sergio | :14:02. | :14:05.
Aguero scored twice as Manchester City saw off West Ham 3-1 to go | :14:06. | :14:09.
fourth. Celtic are four points clear at the | :14:10. | :14:12.
top of the Scottish Premiership but they had to settle for a draw | :14:13. | :14:16.
against Hibernian at Easter Road. They were 1-0 down and heading for | :14:17. | :14:19.
their first league defeat of the season until substitute James | :14:20. | :14:21.
Forrest scored a sensational equaliser with about 15 minutes left | :14:22. | :14:25.
to play. There were also wins for Aberdeen, Motherwell, Kilmarnoock | :14:26. | :14:32.
and St Mirren. To Rugby Union's Heineken Cup. The | :14:33. | :14:35.
pick of European matches was in Wales where Cardiff Blues stunned | :14:36. | :14:38.
Jonny Wilkinson's European champions Toulon. | :14:39. | :14:44.
A rock star welcome but Cardiff Blues were only ever expected to be | :14:45. | :14:49.
the support act. Toulon are a rugby super group after all, setting the | :14:50. | :14:55.
rhythm, Jonny Wilkinson. Two penalties put the French club in | :14:56. | :14:58.
front. All the while, conditions were become less hospitable for the | :14:59. | :15:02.
European Champions. Leigh Halfpenny is used to the rain. He kicked | :15:03. | :15:07.
Cardiff level. The Welsh club had lost their first match in this | :15:08. | :15:11.
competition and put bodies on the line to prevent a repeat. Toulon | :15:12. | :15:16.
emerged from the storm with a slender lead, all of it provided by | :15:17. | :15:21.
Wilkinson. The Blues were three behind with three minutes remaining | :15:22. | :15:26.
when Gareth Davis received the ball. He got Cardiff over the line to a | :15:27. | :15:32.
famous and crucial win 19-15. The Munster red used to be a warning, | :15:33. | :15:44.
abandon hope all ye enter here. Having built the lead on steel, they | :15:45. | :15:48.
found time and space for something more ornate. Conor Murray picked out | :15:49. | :15:57.
Murphy and there was no way back. Munster finished 26-10 winners. | :15:58. | :16:03.
The British-trained Farhh won the Champion Stakes at Ascot today and | :16:04. | :16:06.
has now been retired with the five-year-old going straight to | :16:07. | :16:09.
stud. The Godolphin stallion won by a neck landing ?1.2 million. Today's | :16:10. | :16:14.
meeting was Britain's richest race day - with over ?3 million in prize | :16:15. | :16:18.
money. Defending world champion Jorge | :16:19. | :16:21.
Lorenzo will start on pole for tomorrow's Australian MotoGP, with | :16:22. | :16:23.
fellow Spainard and Championship leader Marc Marquez second and | :16:24. | :16:26.
Valentino Rossi third. Many thanks. That is it from us. | :16:27. | :16:30.
Before we go, a reminder that Alex Salmond will be one of Andrew Marr's | :16:31. | :16:35.
guests at 9.00am tomorrow morning on BBC One. From all of us for now, | :16:36. | :16:37.
good night. Good evening. If you were dodging | :16:38. | :16:51.
the showers today, you will have to do the same tomorrow. Some thundery | :16:52. | :16:54.
downpours | :16:55. | :16:55. |
