An investigation is underway after a helicopter crash in Glasgow. Eight | :00:00. | :00:11.
people are confirmed dead. It came down on the roof of a busy pub in | :00:12. | :00:15.
the city centre. 14 more are seriously injured. There was a loud | :00:16. | :00:28.
bang, and a couple of seconds later the pub collapsed in on itself. | :00:29. | :00:31.
Emergency services are still at the scene as investigators try to piece | :00:32. | :00:34.
together what went wrong. Also tonight: Soil from First World War | :00:35. | :00:37.
battlefields is delivered to a memorial garden in London ahead of | :00:38. | :00:42.
centenary commemorations. And triumph for Australia as they | :00:43. | :00:45.
thrash New Zealand in the final of the Rugby League World Cup. | :00:46. | :01:03.
Good evening. An investigation is underway tonight after a helicopter | :01:04. | :01:11.
crashed through the roof of a crowded pub in Glasgow. The police | :01:12. | :01:17.
helicopter came down late last night, killing all three people on | :01:18. | :01:21.
board and another five who were in the city centre pub. Scotland's | :01:22. | :01:23.
first minister, Alex Salmond, has called it a "black day for Glasgow | :01:24. | :01:27.
and Scotland". The Queen has said her thoughts and prayers are with | :01:28. | :01:30.
the victims. Our correspondent James Cook is at the scene. | :01:31. | :01:38.
Yes, this has been a traumatic day for Glasgow. It began with some hope | :01:39. | :01:48.
that survivors might began -- found amongst the rubble, but that hope | :01:49. | :01:52.
dwindled. The operation behind me has been dangerous, and dangerous | :01:53. | :01:58.
and distressing as well. My report contains flash photography. At first | :01:59. | :02:03.
glance, it is hard to see what happened here, but look closer and | :02:04. | :02:07.
the site is both surreal and shocking. The pub was packed, the | :02:08. | :02:11.
music loud, and nobody heard the helicopter coming down until it was | :02:12. | :02:17.
too late. Suddenly I heard this very loud bang. The ceiling had fallen | :02:18. | :02:21.
onto the bar, where the central bit of the pub is. Reflecting on what | :02:22. | :02:27.
happened, how do you feel? I consider myself very, very lucky to | :02:28. | :02:31.
be where I was, and I feel very sorry for the unlucky ones who were | :02:32. | :02:39.
caught under the rubble. Within minutes, dozens, then hundreds of | :02:40. | :02:43.
firefighters, police and paramedics were on their way. But before they | :02:44. | :02:49.
arrived, it was the people of Glasgow who risked their lives to | :02:50. | :02:52.
help. They had no training, but they did not hesitate. Are you OK? It is | :02:53. | :03:01.
a bit of a blur, but people formed a sort of human chain, side-by-side | :03:02. | :03:05.
with each other to help pull injured people out. Jim, there is blood on | :03:06. | :03:17.
your shirt. Yes, it is not mine. As the night wore on, there was some | :03:18. | :03:22.
hope. Firefighters said they had made contact with survivors trapped | :03:23. | :03:26.
in the pub. But for one man, watching and waiting all night for | :03:27. | :03:29.
news of his father there was no comfort. I know my dad was in there. | :03:30. | :03:37.
My family have checked everywhere. We know he was in there. And it has | :03:38. | :03:44.
hit it right in the bit where he sits. As the sun rose, -- seemed | :03:45. | :03:50.
clear that any hope of rescue was gone, and within a few hours and | :03:51. | :03:54.
emotional Chief Constable confirmed that eight people were dead. Three | :03:55. | :04:00.
of these eight fatalities were found within the helicopter and were our | :04:01. | :04:10.
colleagues. The remaining five people were found within the | :04:11. | :04:12.
building. There are many, many questions about | :04:13. | :04:23.
what happened here, but for now, this city is still overwhelmed with | :04:24. | :04:24.
shock. The focus now is beginning to move | :04:25. | :04:32.
towards the recovery operation here. They have brought in a large | :04:33. | :04:37.
crane onto the site near to the helicopter itself, which is still | :04:38. | :04:41.
enmeshed within the building. And what they will try to do, they | :04:42. | :04:45.
think, is try to lift the helicopter up to check underneath it to see | :04:46. | :04:50.
what might lie underneath. That will obviously be very difficult indeed | :04:51. | :04:54.
and will be a slow process. One accident investigator, who is very | :04:55. | :04:58.
experienced, described the situation as one of the most complex sites | :04:59. | :05:03.
he'd ever been on in his career. That gives you a sense of how hard | :05:04. | :05:07.
it will be. Also, the investigators are appealing for any video or | :05:08. | :05:11.
skills of what happened here last night, people should get in touch to | :05:12. | :05:20.
find out what caused this terrible crash -- stills. | :05:21. | :05:22.
The type of helicopter that crashed is widely used among emergency | :05:23. | :05:26.
services here and abroad. Air accident investigators are at the | :05:27. | :05:29.
scene, examining the wreckage, and trying to work out what caused it to | :05:30. | :05:32.
fail. Our Transport Correspondent Richard Westcott reports. | :05:33. | :05:37.
It is the workhorse for many emergency services over the world, a | :05:38. | :05:43.
common sight flying low over our cities, but now there is a question | :05:44. | :05:47.
over its safety. Eyewitnesses could provide important clues. I could | :05:48. | :05:55.
hear a spluttering, mechanical noise like a car running out of petrol but | :05:56. | :05:59.
very loud. I felt it was right about me and I was looking to see what was | :06:00. | :06:02.
going on, and I saw the tail fin of the helicopter falling out of the | :06:03. | :06:10.
sky. But investigators will begin by focusing on the wreckage. We will | :06:11. | :06:14.
make sure the whole tale is there, the propellers on the back are | :06:15. | :06:19.
mounted on the tail. We have here one of the main rotor blades | :06:20. | :06:22.
protruding through the building which talents -- tells us it was | :06:23. | :06:25.
attached to the helicopter at the time. We will look for witness | :06:26. | :06:30.
marks, was rotating, did it cut into the building or was it at a complete | :06:31. | :06:35.
stop when it hit the building? That will tell as part of the story as to | :06:36. | :06:38.
whether they were powered, whether the pilot was in control, or whether | :06:39. | :06:48.
they just seized completely. The EC135 has an excellent safety record | :06:49. | :06:52.
and is widely used by police forces and Ambulance Services. It has two | :06:53. | :06:57.
engines, but even if both of those engines fail, pilots are trained to | :06:58. | :07:01.
land safely by gliding to the ground. Those pilots are also | :07:02. | :07:05.
regularly tested to cope with emergencies. It is not thought that | :07:06. | :07:10.
the helicopter had a black box on board, but the computer systems | :07:11. | :07:14.
should still tell investigators what was happening when the aircraft lost | :07:15. | :07:21.
height. The pilot union said that trends in helicopter safety was a | :07:22. | :07:24.
matter of concern after a series of accidents, mainly over the North | :07:25. | :07:28.
Sea. Even so, it could be awhile before we know just what has caused | :07:29. | :07:30.
crash. -- this crash. Across Scotland flags have been | :07:31. | :07:38.
flying at half-mast as a mark of respect for the victims of the | :07:39. | :07:41.
crash. Many St Andrew's Day events were cancelled and football grounds | :07:42. | :07:44.
observed a minute's silence. From Glasgow, Chris Buckler reports on | :07:45. | :07:47.
how the city responded to the tragedy. | :07:48. | :07:51.
As darkness returned to Glasgow, so did the thoughts of what happened | :07:52. | :07:58.
last night. They are impossible to ignore in the street still cordoned | :07:59. | :08:02.
off and of what remains of the Clutha pub. Throughout the day the | :08:03. | :08:05.
anxious wait for news has brought little but misery. Both the worried | :08:06. | :08:11.
and thankful gathered at a Mass held at St Andrews Cathedral just minutes | :08:12. | :08:17.
from the side of the crash. It was disturbing and distressing to see | :08:18. | :08:20.
the images of this helicopter, it was surreal. Many in the city have | :08:21. | :08:26.
friends who were injured when the helicopter came crashing down. My | :08:27. | :08:32.
friend, Douglas, he went ahead of me by a couple of minutes and he | :08:33. | :08:36.
unfortunately was in the bar. I was making my way along Clyde Street and | :08:37. | :08:41.
as I approached the bar there was a very loud explosion. Shock and grief | :08:42. | :08:48.
has united people. The silence at today's match between Falkirk and | :08:49. | :08:51.
Glasgow Rangers said more than any one individual could. In each of the | :08:52. | :08:56.
stands, they stood to show their respect for the dead and injured. | :08:57. | :09:03.
This is a black day for Glasgow and for Scotland. But it is also St | :09:04. | :09:10.
Andrews Day, and the day where we can take pride and courage in how we | :09:11. | :09:15.
respond to adversity and tragedy. There is no doubt that what was to | :09:16. | :09:20.
have been a day of national celebration has become one of the | :09:21. | :09:24.
morning. There are people going out in Glasgow this evening, but the | :09:25. | :09:28.
events of the last 24 hours hanging over this Saturday night. After all, | :09:29. | :09:33.
nobody who went to the Clutha bar could have predicted the chaos | :09:34. | :09:36.
there. On the eve of December, it is not Christmas lights that stand out | :09:37. | :09:40.
in the streets, but the bright lights of search teams working to | :09:41. | :09:42.
uncover the dreadful reality. In other news, a man has been killed | :09:43. | :09:49.
during political protests in the Thai capital, Bangkok. Police said | :09:50. | :09:52.
five others were injured when pro-government demonstrators clashed | :09:53. | :09:54.
with those calling for the Prime Minister to resign. The leader of | :09:55. | :10:00.
the protest movement has called for "an all-out assault" on government | :10:01. | :10:03.
buildings tomorrow in an effort to bring down the current | :10:04. | :10:04.
administration. One of the biggest British film | :10:05. | :10:09.
stars of the 1940s and 50s, Jean Kent, has died at the age of 92. The | :10:10. | :10:16.
actress made her name in a series of melodramas made by Gainsborough | :10:17. | :10:19.
Pictures after the Second World War. During her film career she worked | :10:20. | :10:21.
alongside Marilyn Monroe, Michael Redgrave and Laurence Olivier. | :10:22. | :10:28.
70 sandbags full of earth gathered from the battlefields of Flanders | :10:29. | :10:32.
have been carried through central London to a memorial garden to mark | :10:33. | :10:35.
next year's 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War. The | :10:36. | :10:42.
soil was taken by gun carriage from HMS Belfast on the Thames to | :10:43. | :10:44.
Wellington Barracks, where the garden is being created. Robert Hall | :10:45. | :10:54.
reports. This was a journey full of echoes from the past. The clatter of | :10:55. | :11:01.
horses hooves, a gun carriage which is -- left the factory as the clouds | :11:02. | :11:05.
of war gathered and an escort drawn from regiments which left so many in | :11:06. | :11:09.
Belgium and France. Every generation should remember, especially now | :11:10. | :11:13.
because there is no real living memory left. I felt completely | :11:14. | :11:17.
honoured to be underneath the Menin Gate for the correct -- collection | :11:18. | :11:20.
of the soil, and paraded to London again. A journey that began in the | :11:21. | :11:26.
Menin Gate on Armistice Day symbolising a bond of friendship | :11:27. | :11:29.
that has enjoyed her nearly a century. -- in Jordan for nearly a | :11:30. | :11:36.
century. It is important to remind people what it is like. My uncle was | :11:37. | :11:43.
gassed in the First World War, so we have to think about what they did. | :11:44. | :11:48.
My grandfather fought in that war and we think it is important to pay | :11:49. | :11:54.
respect. With the 100th anniversary next year, it is so important. A lot | :11:55. | :12:02.
of us have a lot to learn from it. 1000 schoolchildren from Britain and | :12:03. | :12:06.
Belgium had gathered soil at 70 Commonwealth war cemeteries. Today, | :12:07. | :12:13.
age old Patrick Casey was chosen to add the first contribution to the | :12:14. | :12:17.
new memorial garden. -- eight-year-old. It makes me feel | :12:18. | :12:21.
proud and excited. It is very special, because we're talking about | :12:22. | :12:25.
soldiers that risked their lives for us. This is more than a gesture of | :12:26. | :12:31.
remembrance. The soil and the poppy seeds it contains will provide a | :12:32. | :12:35.
haven of peace and reflection in the hubbub of a modern city. | :12:36. | :12:39.
With all the sport now, here's Karthi Gnanasegaram at the BBC Sport | :12:40. | :12:42.
Centre. Thank you very much. Australia have | :12:43. | :12:50.
been crowned rugby league world champions for the 10th time. They | :12:51. | :12:56.
beat the 2008 World Cup winners New Zealand by 34-2 in front of a | :12:57. | :12:57.
world-record crowd. The holders against the favourites, | :12:58. | :13:09.
New Zealand and Australia emerged to 74,000 roaring voices and one | :13:10. | :13:14.
overriding question, on the grandest stage of all, who would seize the | :13:15. | :13:19.
moment? Thurston again with a measured kick. Slater! The suspense | :13:20. | :13:25.
did not last long as Australia produced a masterclass, with tries | :13:26. | :13:29.
from Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk putting them clear, as New | :13:30. | :13:31.
Zealand's hopes were swamped in a sea of green and gold. After the | :13:32. | :13:38.
break, Triumph became a trouncing. Billy Slater is loving this World | :13:39. | :13:44.
Cup final! In the last final Australia were ambushed by New | :13:45. | :13:47.

Brett Morris dives in and scores. The advertising hoardings were about | :13:54. | :13:57.
the only thing that could stop him, and the pain soon turned to pleasure | :13:58. | :14:03.
and a record-breaking victory. An utterly one-sided final won by | :14:04. | :14:07.
Australia, but they won't mind that. World champions for the 10th | :14:08. | :14:09.
time in emphatic style. Unlike that rather one-sided | :14:10. | :14:20.
contest, Wales and Australia were involved in a thrilling encounter in | :14:21. | :14:23.
the last of the autumn internationals. Wales had a great | :14:24. | :14:27.
start as George North scored inside two minutes to help them go into a | :14:28. | :14:31.
13-3 lead, but Australia came back with three tries, the best scored by | :14:32. | :14:37.

Arsenal beat Cardiff City to move three points clear at the top of the | :15:05. | :15:08.

for Everton who move up to fourth place after a 4-0 victory over | :15:12. | :15:23.
Stoke. Newcastle beat West Bromwich Albion, and Crystal Palace are | :15:24. | :15:25.
