Michael Schumacher, seven times the world motor racing champion is

:00:11.:00:16.

seriously ill tonight after a skiing accident. He was rushed to hospital.

:00:17.:00:25.

A suicide bomber attacks a railway station in Russia. At least 16 are

:00:26.:00:29.

dead. Passengers are winched to safety after a fire on board oar

:00:30.:00:33.

North Sea ferry. Two men are arrested.

:00:34.:00:38.

4-0 it is. And Australian celebrate victory in the fourth Test as

:00:39.:00:40.

England face an Ashes white wash. Good evening. The former world

:00:41.:01:03.

moator racing champion, Michael Schumacher, is in a critical

:01:04.:01:05.

condition in hospital after he suffered a head injury, skiing in

:01:06.:01:10.

the French Alps. He fell and hit a rock whilst skiing off piste with

:01:11.:01:15.

his son near the resort of Meribel. Tonight the former racing driver is

:01:16.:01:21.

in a coma after undergoing brain surgery.

:01:22.:01:23.

This evening, Michael Schumacher is being treated by trauma specialists

:01:24.:01:29.

in this hospital in Grenoble. In the past few minutes the hospital said

:01:30.:01:32.

he was admitted in a coma with a severe head injury which required

:01:33.:01:37.

immediate neurosurgery. Michael Schumacher is an experienced

:01:38.:01:41.

skier. He was off piste with his 14-year-old son when he had the

:01:42.:01:45.

fall, cracking his head against a rock. But he was wearing a helmet

:01:46.:01:50.

and he remained conscious. Officials at the resort, at the time, said the

:01:51.:01:54.

injury was serious but not life-threatening.

:01:55.:01:58.

Initially he was taken by helicopter to a small local medical centre but

:01:59.:02:02.

later, in a sign that his condition might be worse than thought, he was

:02:03.:02:10.

moved to a much bigger hospital. Now aged 44, Michael Schumacher is

:02:11.:02:14.

the most successful Formula 1 driver of all time.

:02:15.:02:18.

Winning the world title seven times. He finally retired only last year.

:02:19.:02:23.

He is a man highly atuned to the thrills of high speed sport but, of

:02:24.:02:28.

course, to its dangers, too. Well, hue Schofield reporting. He

:02:29.:02:34.

joins us live now from Paris. Things look pretty serious, don't they, for

:02:35.:02:39.

Schumacher tonight? Well they look much more serious than we thought

:02:40.:02:42.

they were, that's for sure. We were led to believe, really it was a

:02:43.:02:44.

light accident that wouldn't require much more than a bit of treatment in

:02:45.:02:48.

the local hospital. But now it seems it is serious and we have had this

:02:49.:02:51.

statement just in the last few minutes, really, saying he is in a

:02:52.:02:55.

critical state and he was indeed in a coma when he arrived in the

:02:56.:03:00.

hospital. His family are there. And this - France's top trauma

:03:01.:03:05.

specialist has flown down from Paris in another sign this is being taken

:03:06.:03:08.

very seriously indeed. It seems likely that he walked initially away

:03:09.:03:12.

from the injury or the accident, without too many signs of it doing

:03:13.:03:17.

any damage, but maybe at this first hospital, while he was being

:03:18.:03:20.

treated, maybe he lost consciousness there. Maybe there was some

:03:21.:03:23.

bleeding, we just don't know. Thank you very much.

:03:24.:03:28.

At least 16 people have been killed in a huge explosion at a railway

:03:29.:03:32.

station in southern Russia. A suicide bomber carried out the

:03:33.:03:35.

attack in the city of Volgograd. It's the greatest in a series of

:03:36.:03:39.

bombings by separatist Islamist groups in the North Caucasus, ahead

:03:40.:03:43.

of the winter Olympic Games which begin in the Russian city of Sochi

:03:44.:03:52.

in six weeks' time. Volgograd's Central railway station

:03:53.:03:55.

inthe moment a bomb went off in the entrance hall at lunch time,

:03:56.:03:59.

instantly killing many of the passengers. Investigators at first

:04:00.:04:03.

said it was the work of a female suicide bomber who had blown herself

:04:04.:04:08.

up just inside the building, at the exact spot where the metal detectors

:04:09.:04:12.

were. Later, they said the bomber may in fact have been a man. The

:04:13.:04:18.

Kremlin immediately ordered railway stations and airports to step up

:04:19.:04:22.

security. President Putin told his law enforcement services to do

:04:23.:04:26.

everything that was necessary to keep people safe.

:04:27.:04:31.

Russia is grieving. The immediate concern is for the injured and the

:04:32.:04:36.

relatives of the dead. The New Year is the big, annual family holiday

:04:37.:04:40.

here. For 16 fwamlies today t became a time of mourning.

:04:41.:04:44.

-- it became. But Russia is also due to host the

:04:45.:04:48.

Winter Olympics in six weeks' time. The eyes of the world are on the

:04:49.:04:53.

host city, Sochi, just 400 miles from Volgograd.

:04:54.:04:57.

There have always been security worries about staging the Olympics,

:04:58.:05:02.

so close to Russia's troubled republics of Chechnya and Dagestan.

:05:03.:05:09.

In June, one of the leaders of the Islamist insurgency there, dom cue

:05:10.:05:14.

um rof called on his supporters to use maximum force to disrupt what he

:05:15.:05:20.

called, the satanic games. I was always saying that people were

:05:21.:05:42.

responding to cock due um rof's callings. President Putin has done

:05:43.:05:47.

all he can to reassure the international -- respond responding

:05:48.:05:56.

to Doku Umarov. It is not far from Beslan, the scene

:05:57.:06:04.

where children were killed nine years ago. Today's scene was just a

:06:05.:06:12.

reminder that you cannot guarantee security in Russia.

:06:13.:06:15.

Account Russian authorities realistically talk of guaranteeing

:06:16.:06:20.

safety in any way for their own people indeed and of course for the

:06:21.:06:23.

Olympic Games? Or the winter Olympics? Well, there will be

:06:24.:06:27.

extraordinary security in so muchia in an attempt to protect the

:06:28.:06:32.

athletes and spectators, drones will be hovering over the area with the

:06:33.:06:35.

ability to zoom in on people's faces and zoom in over number plates.

:06:36.:06:40.

There is antiaircraft missile battery. All cars registered outside

:06:41.:06:44.

Sochi will be banned from entering the city. There will be extensive

:06:45.:06:48.

surveillance systems to monitor phone calls and e-mails. Physical

:06:49.:06:52.

security will be quite difficult. It's bounded by very high mountains

:06:53.:06:56.

on one side and the Black Sea on the other which gives opportunities for

:06:57.:07:00.

anyone who wants to get into the area, unnoticed. Today reminds us

:07:01.:07:05.

that anyone wanting to make a point during the Sochi Winter Olympics

:07:06.:07:08.

doesn't have to do that in Sochi. Any bomb in any major city in Russia

:07:09.:07:13.

will attract maximum international attention, cause maximum

:07:14.:07:16.

embarrassment to President Putin's Government and that, of course, is

:07:17.:07:22.

what the bombers want. Here a voluntary register of all

:07:23.:07:25.

breast implant operations is to be set up in England. It follow the

:07:26.:07:30.

scandal involving dangerous implants supplied by the French company. PIP.

:07:31.:07:34.

New qualifications for cosmetic surgeons will be introduced, along

:07:35.:07:38.

with tighter rules on the marketing of procedures.

:07:39.:07:42.

The leader of the UK Independence Party, nighing ale Farage, has said

:07:43.:07:47.

some refugees from the war in Syria should be allowed to come to

:07:48.:07:51.

Britain. -- Nigel Farage. He said Western countries had a

:07:52.:07:55.

doubty to offer sang Toure. The Government has failed to let any

:07:56.:07:58.

refugees into the UK, arguing it is better to offer financial support.

:07:59.:08:07.

It's a conflict that has created hardship and displaced millions. But

:08:08.:08:10.

what should happen to the innocent victims? The UK leader, Nigel

:08:11.:08:15.

Farage, such a strong advocate of reducing the number of economic

:08:16.:08:18.

migrants entering Britain, says in this case we need to be more

:08:19.:08:23.

generous. I think refugees are a very different thing to economic

:08:24.:08:27.

migration. I think this country should honour the spirit of the 1951

:08:28.:08:33.

declaration on refugee status that was agreed and I think actually

:08:34.:08:36.

there is a responsibility on all of us in the free West to try to help

:08:37.:08:41.

some of those people fleeing Syria, literally in fear of their lives.

:08:42.:08:45.

The United Nations is calling for a global effort to help those

:08:46.:08:48.

struggling in Syria. The UN wants richer countries to take in a total

:08:49.:08:53.

of 30,000 refugees. Germany's offered to accept 10,000 people.

:08:54.:09:01.

France is taking 500, in contrast, 18 EU countries, including the UK,

:09:02.:09:06.

are refusing to take any. But the UK is the most generous cash donor,

:09:07.:09:10.

pledging more than ?500 million in aid.

:09:11.:09:14.

The Prime Minister has visited refugee camps in Jordan to see some

:09:15.:09:20.

of the suffering for himself. Labour says it'll allow around 500 people

:09:21.:09:25.

to enter Britain and some Conservative backbenchers are urging

:09:26.:09:30.

the Government to soften its mind. I think the Government will change its

:09:31.:09:34.

mind. Britain is an open and tolerant society. We can't take all

:09:35.:09:38.

the refugees from Syria but I think we should abid by international

:09:39.:09:42.

commitments and take some, 1,000 or 2,000. There is no sign of that

:09:43.:09:46.

changing yet, despite the increasing pressure but the Government's more

:09:47.:09:49.

worried about immigration of a different kind. Restrictions on

:09:50.:09:53.

workers from Romania and Bulgaria will be lifted on Wednesday and

:09:54.:09:56.

ministers don't know how many will come.

:09:57.:10:02.

Two men have been arrested, one on suspicion of arson, after fire broke

:10:03.:10:05.

out on a North Sea ferry shortly after it set sail from North Shields

:10:06.:10:11.

for amster da. Six people were flown to hospital by RAF helicopter and

:10:12.:10:15.

the ferry was forced to return to Tyneside.

:10:16.:10:20.

In the middle of the night, a fire on MS king seaways, with more than

:10:21.:10:28.

900 passengers on board. Frightened and confused they were dragged from

:10:29.:10:31.

their beds and up on to the decks. There is a fire on board. Everybody

:10:32.:10:36.

is coming to the lifeboats. This photo, taken by a passenger,

:10:37.:10:40.

shows the damage done to the cabin. It was really thick smoke. You could

:10:41.:10:45.

smell it. There was a lot of panic from some people, with kids,

:10:46.:10:48.

obviously they were panicking. Our cabin was five doors away from the

:10:49.:10:53.

fire. Quite scary as the whole place filled with smoke. RAF helicopters

:10:54.:10:58.

winched six people to safety. They were flown to Scarborough hospital

:10:59.:11:04.

and treatedes for smoke inhalation. Therefore four doctors on board,

:11:05.:11:07.

travelling as passengers. They treated the people. Luckily it was

:11:08.:11:10.

down to just six people requiring evacuation. Five of them being crew

:11:11.:11:14.

members who had been involved with fighting the fire and one was a

:11:15.:11:18.

prenanted lady. Police were waiting when the ferry returned to North

:11:19.:11:23.

North Shields. Passengers were then kept on board for more than four

:11:24.:11:28.

hours while they probable ducted inquiries. Two men were arrested,

:11:29.:11:33.

one on suspicion of arson, the other on suspicion of a fray. The other

:11:34.:11:37.

passengers were released. Emotional and exhausted We were going to go

:11:38.:11:41.

for a weekend, a couple of friends. Enjoy the day in Amsterdam, and come

:11:42.:11:45.

home tonight. Never mind. Back to Carlile. They may not be where they

:11:46.:11:48.

planned to be tonight but most passengers we spoke to were just

:11:49.:11:52.

grateful that nobody had been seriously hurt. Many of them praised

:11:53.:11:56.

staff on board for remaining calm but most importantly, containing a

:11:57.:12:00.

fire that could have been a lot more dangerous.

:12:01.:12:05.

So, for tonight, the MS cap king Seaway has become a floating hotel

:12:06.:12:10.

as mass injuries spend the night on board. -- MS King Seaway.

:12:11.:12:20.

Now, with the day's big sports news, Katie Gornall.

:12:21.:12:22.

Good evening. England are on course for an Ashes

:12:23.:12:26.

white wash after losing the fourth Test by eight wick totes go 4-0 down

:12:27.:12:31.

in the Series. Alistair Cook says he wants to continue as England captain

:12:32.:12:36.

but admits his latest defeat leaves his future uncertain.

:12:37.:12:40.

Melbourne this morning and the fourth Test had reached a crucial

:12:41.:12:44.

junction. Time and time again on this tour, England had failed. Now

:12:45.:12:49.

finally, it seemed like things could go either way.

:12:50.:12:54.

With Australia resuming on 30-0 but still needing a tricky 201 runs to

:12:55.:12:58.

win, England had genuine hope but knew they had to take every chance

:12:59.:13:03.

offered. Sadly for them, captain Alistair Cook squandered two almost

:13:04.:13:07.

immediately. The first unfortunate. The second unforgivable. England's

:13:08.:13:12.

lamentable fielding would cost them. Having been handed a reprieve, David

:13:13.:13:17.

Warner were eventually snared by Stokes but it would prove a false

:13:18.:13:21.

down. After two batting collapses yesterday, Chris Rodgers proved the

:13:22.:13:26.

pitch was no excuse. He steered his side to victory with a brilliant

:13:27.:13:30.

century after England ran out of idea. With Shane Watson in one day

:13:31.:13:38.

mode, the end was mercilessly quick. Australia had romped home by eight

:13:39.:13:42.

wickets. On a tour that has brugted daily disappointment, this is

:13:43.:13:44.

arguably the most painful defeat of all, with England throwing away a

:13:45.:13:48.

winning position. With the Ashes already gone, this could have been a

:13:49.:13:52.

fresh start. Instead, the humiliation of a 5-0 white wash in

:13:53.:13:57.

Sydney next week, now feels inevitable.

:13:58.:14:01.

Well it's been an eventful day in the Premier League. All the goals

:14:02.:14:05.

are coming up on match of the day 2, straight after the news, but if you

:14:06.:14:09.

want to know the results now. Here they come: Arsenal will end the year

:14:10.:14:13.

on top of the table after beating Newcastle United 1-0 at St James's's

:14:14.:14:17.

park. Olivier Giroud scored the only goal of the game to lift his side

:14:18.:14:22.

one point above Manchester City. Chelsea came depr behind to beat

:14:23.:14:26.

Liverpool 2-1. Liverpool drop to fifth. Lu scored his first goal in

:14:27.:14:35.

six matches for Everton -- Lukaku. Tottenham beat Stoke. Celtic remain

:14:36.:14:38.

unbeaten in the Scottish Premiership after a 1-0 victory over Inverness

:14:39.:14:43.

Caledonian Thistle. They were ahead after three minutes when Kris

:14:44.:14:48.

Commons fired in his 15th goal of the season. The win sees Celtic

:14:49.:14:52.

preserve their 11-point lead at the top of the table. That's all the

:14:53.:14:54.

sport for now. Thank you. The main news again: The

:14:55.:15:00.

former world motor racing champion, Michael Schumacher s critically ill

the rain could cause problem with the ground already waterlogged.

Christmas storm. Five days ago, this is how central

Guildford looked. A submerged landscape studded with marooned
