Good evening. It has been a day of huge political upheaval in Ukraine. | :00:24. | :00:30.
Barely 24 hours after a deal was signed to bring stability to the | :00:31. | :00:34.
country. This morning, opponents of President Viktor Yanukovych took | :00:35. | :00:37.
control of government buildings in Kiev, amid reports he had fled the | :00:38. | :00:43.
capital. Then, this afternoon, he appeared on television reportedly | :00:44. | :00:46.
from his eastern stronghold of Kharkiv, saying he had no intention | :00:47. | :00:50.
of resigning, but the parliament he once controlled stripped of the | :00:51. | :00:53.
presidency and set a new date for elections. And tonight, the | :00:54. | :00:58.
opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko, freed from prison earlier in the | :00:59. | :01:01.
day, is reported to be in Kiev. Let's go live there now and join our | :01:02. | :01:07.
Europe editor, Gavin Hewitt. Clive, by any measure this has been | :01:08. | :01:12.
an extraordinary day. There are vast crowds on the streets, celebrating | :01:13. | :01:17.
what many are calling a Ukrainian revolution, the day began with the | :01:18. | :01:20.
riot police simply having vanished from the capital and then the | :01:21. | :01:25.
president also leaving the capital and by the end of the day Parliament | :01:26. | :01:29.
have voted to remove him from power. My colleague Steve Rosenberg | :01:30. | :01:32.
has been following these data's events. | :01:33. | :01:39.
They call themselves the self defence unit of Independence Square. | :01:40. | :01:42.
In the centre of Kiev today, they were the only kind of policemen | :01:43. | :01:48.
around. We found these activists on guard outside Viktor Yanukovych's | :01:49. | :01:51.
office. The protesters had taken over the building. There would be no | :01:52. | :01:56.
compromise with the president. Other units went to Parliament. Their | :01:57. | :02:03.
demonstration of people power. Inside on a parliament once | :02:04. | :02:08.
controlled by the president, demonstrated dramatically it had | :02:09. | :02:14.
turned against him. It voted to remove President Yanukovych from | :02:15. | :02:16.
power and set early elections for May. Viktor Yanukovych is thought to | :02:17. | :02:23.
be in his power base of eastern Ukraine. In a TV interview broadcast | :02:24. | :02:27.
today, he said that what was happening was a coup. He likened it | :02:28. | :02:32.
to the Nazis coming to power in Germany. He would spare no effort, | :02:33. | :02:39.
he said, to end the bloodshed. And there was more drama. To cheers from | :02:40. | :02:44.
her supporters, Mr Yanukovych's most bitter rival, Yulia Tymoshenko, was | :02:45. | :02:49.
freed from jail. The former prime minister may now run for president. | :02:50. | :02:56.
But perhaps this today was the ultimate humiliation for Viktor | :02:57. | :03:00.
Yanukovych. Protesters broke into his luxury residence outside Kiev | :03:01. | :03:06.
and let the public in. This is remarkable. People are streaming | :03:07. | :03:10.
into Viktor Yanukovych's back garden and taking what looks like a | :03:11. | :03:13.
Saturday stroll in the park and by coming here they are sending a | :03:14. | :03:16.
message to their leaders that there is no place for him in the | :03:17. | :03:22.
presidency. They stared in amazement at the size and the splendour and | :03:23. | :03:26.
took souvenir photos to remember how their leader had lived. Before today | :03:27. | :03:32.
I could not believe that such a place could exist in Ukraine. But | :03:33. | :03:38.
eventually they found a way into yet -- into Viktor Yanukovych's sauna, | :03:39. | :03:43.
complete with mass large table and tastefully folded towels. He has | :03:44. | :03:48.
lost the presidency and who -- and it seems his house, but Viktor | :03:49. | :03:51.
Yanukovych is refusing to recognise the decision to oust him. It is | :03:52. | :03:59.
unclear what his next move will be. So, where does this leave Ukraine? | :04:00. | :04:04.
Firstly, it helps enormously that it was parliament that voted to strip | :04:05. | :04:09.
the president from office. This was not a coup. Secondly, there is the | :04:10. | :04:12.
mood amongst the people. I met a woman tonight who said, I simply | :04:13. | :04:16.
cried when I heard about the president. But there are two big | :04:17. | :04:21.
questions. Firstly, will the unity that has been shown on the | :04:22. | :04:24.
barricades here amongst opposition leaders, will that remain as they go | :04:25. | :04:30.
to snap elections? And lastly, what will the president do? He has been | :04:31. | :04:33.
stripped from power but he is determined to fight on, so he says, | :04:34. | :04:37.
and will he try and get support in the eastern Russian facing side of | :04:38. | :04:43.
the country that could endanger the unity of Ukraine? All of these | :04:44. | :04:47.
things will be looked at in the days ahead. | :04:48. | :04:50.
Gavin Hewitt reporting live from Kiev, many thanks, | :04:51. | :08:46.
Owen Farrell's book was far more secure. He delivered the only points | :08:47. | :08:52.
of the first half. No tries, not much, but O'Driscoll but don't -- | :08:53. | :08:57.
immediately after the break Rob Kearney run a line that was one of | :08:58. | :09:01.
his -- once his team-mates's trademark. There was no copyright. | :09:02. | :09:05.
Mike Brown went through and there was Danny Care. Ireland was suddenly | :09:06. | :09:12.
up against it. Three points behind, now even O'Driscoll's flicks | :09:13. | :09:16.
failed. Their last heave was not enough, so England and their Grand | :09:17. | :09:20.
Slam hopes and throw this tournament wide open. Scotland's problems had | :09:21. | :09:27.
been mounting of late and with seven Jan -- 79 minutes gone they were | :09:28. | :09:31.
falling to another defeat in Italy, when Duncan Weir dropped to victory. | :09:32. | :09:34.
The moment of magic Scottish rugby has so desperately craved. | :09:35. | :09:42.
There is more throughout the evening on the BBC News channel, with all | :09:43. | :09:47.
the very latest on the dramatic day's events in Ukraine. I | :09:48. | :09:48. |
