Good evening. The captain of the South Korean

ferry which capsized with hundreds of children on board has been

explaining why he did not order everyone to leave the ship

straightaway. The captain, who's under arrest, said he'd feared that

strong currents in the sea made evacuation too great a risk. Efforts

to reach the 270 missing passengers are continuing. And, as Lucy

Williamson reports, families waiting for news were shown footage shot by

divers, of the search operation in progress.

Inside this once-crowded ship, divers search for any signs of life.

Alone in the darkness, the only comfort... A way back out. Four days

on, this footage only feeds frustration. Something is dying here

among the families - hope. Officials offer reasons for why so few have

been recovered. But for families told they'll have to live another

day without their children, this is the response. "What are the divers

actually doing?" one woman says. "Our children are dying". Arrested

and charged with negligence, the captain said he delayed the

evacuation to protect people. TRANSLATION: At the time, the

current was very strong. The temperature of the ocean water was

cold and I thought that it people left the ferry without proper

judgement, if they were not wearing a life jacket and even if they were,

they would drift away and face many other difficulties.

But would this accident have happened if he'd been on the bridge?

And if, as emerged today, the helmsman hadn't let a 25-year-old

crewmember try her hand at steering the ship? Now, under these waves

lies the fate of a town. Their wives, uncles, children and friends.

40 times today they tried to get inside to find them. But this ferry

isn't giving up its secrets quickly. Boats are coming in from the site

every day now, but divers said the currents in the area are so strong

their oxygen masks are being swept away and visibility is so low, they

can only see about half a metre in front of them. Finding hundreds of

passengers is in conditions like that is going to take time. More

bodies were brought ashore tonight, found drifting in the water around

the wreck. A few more families ruined, a little less reason for

hope. As Christians around the world mark

Holy Week and prepare for Easter Sunday tomorrow, in Syria their

faith is increasingly under attack. Christian leaders have been

specifically targeted and churches desecrated. Like other communities,

many Christians have been forced to flee the country. Our Chief

International Correspondent, Lyse Doucet, spoke to some of those

who've decided to stay. For serious Christians, the start of

Holy Week is a time to hold fast to rituals. Especially such joyous

occasions in the saddest of times. There is no peace now, just daily

violence. A mortar round struck a Christian school this week, 60

children and teachers were injured. This nine-year-old girl waits the

surgery on her leg. She tells me it's broken and burning. "You are a

brave girl", I say. TRANSLATION: Yes, we are brave, but

what does it mean? Other children were injured. A lot of blood spilled

on the floor in our courtyard. And our principal, she is in surgery

now. A lot of teachers were injured. The girl and her classmates were

playing in their schoolyard in the Christian quarter of the old city,

when the mortar landed. Dozens now strike Damascus every day, believed

to be fired by rebels. The Syrian army pounds their position on the

edges of this city. In Syria now attacks take place on a daily basis.

Some are targeted, some like this are indiscriminate. Syrian

Christians tell us they are not the only one suffering in this brutal

war. But for them, the pain over their individual losses is deepened

by their anxiety over the fate of their entire community. This week St

Paul's Church in Damascus was full for Father Franz, a Dutch Jesuit

priest murdered in this city of Homms. A towering figure who

inspired Syrians of all faiths with his courage and commitment to this

country. I am afraid about the future of the Christian community.

If the majority of Christians, if they had the possibility to get out

of Syria and to find asylum elsewhere, they would leave, 90% I

would say. On the other hand, some people have made the decision to

stay. For Christians, Holy Week marks the death and resurrection of

Jesus. Now, they also pray for the revival of their country and their

place within it. The England cricket team has a new

coach. He's Peter Moores. He takes charge of a squad battered by this

winter's disastrous Ashes Tour. But Moores is no stranger to the job,

having coached the team previously. Here's our sports reporter Ben

Smith. After a winter of discontent, is

inherits a site that is licking its wounds after five nil humiliation by

Ashley Giles who was tipped to get the job. Alistair Cook welcomed the

appointment but admitted England now -- have a way to go to regain their

status as the best test side in the world. We have a huge amount of

talent in the country and it is an exciting time to be an England

player. England have been here before. In 2007, he was seen as the

man to lift England after a whitewash Ashes series. Only for a

high-profile row with Kevin Pietersen to cost him his job. Kevin

Pietersen said this morning, everyone deserves a second chance.

Kevin Pietersen will not be a factor with the clear message from Lord's

today, there is no way back for Kevin Pietersen. But they are close

to appointing an assistant. In Peter Moores, England have gone back to

Park took a dramatic turn when their car caught fire in the lion

enclosure. Witnesses captured the moment yesterday when the car burst

into flames. Rangers had rescued the passengers - a woman and two

children, after clearing the lions from the enclosure. A spokesman from

the park said the blaze was put out quickly and that neither people nor

lions were hurt. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

have paid tribute to Australia's air force during the latest leg of their

tour of the country. William and Kate met servicemen and women at an

air base in Brisbane, as our Royal Correspondent Nicholas Witchell

reports. They are Australia's defence forces

and their loyalty is to the Crown. When William and Catherine visited a

military base, there was a ceremonial welcome for them. The

couple were in Queens land, the sunshine State and temperatures were

into the 80s. Catherine had chosen a light, some address, just the thing

for the heat you would imagine, but not the thing when William invited

her to climb into an F-18 jet fighter. You would look good in the

back, said William. But with William in the rear seat, she had little

option. She eased herself carefully into the front cockpit. That is
