Good evening. The Church of England has called for

a new inquiry into assisted dying after the former Archbishop of

Canterbury, Lord Carey, said he had changed his mind about the issue and

now believes terminally ill people should be given

the right to end their lives. Lord Carey says he intends to

support a bill which will be debated in the House of Lords next week.

Our religious affairs correspondent, Robert Pigott, reports.

Paul Lamb was left with limited movement in one hand. He campaigned

for the right to take his life. He challenged opponents of assisted

dying to heed Lord Carey's words. They have no idea what pain is. They

talk about, you know, people like me having to endure for the rest of,

you know, my life. Pain and suffering. Because they think it's

right for me. They're not going through it. The legislation before

the House of Lords on Friday won't help Mr Lamw it would restrict

assisted dying to terminally ill people in England and Wales with

less than six months to live. M mitt Writing in the Daily Mail, Lord

Carey questioned whether the law should force terminally ill patients

to an unbearable point. He said that in opposing assisted dying the

church could now actually be promoting anguish and pain. Lord

Joffey said his change of heart would have a significant impact in

the. The.Lords. There are a number of peeres who are open minded who

are seriously concerned, want answers to their concerns. When they

see the analysis which Lord Carey has brought to bring about a change

in his views, it is certain that it will have some impact on them. The

church, meeting at the York synod this weekend, remains strongly

opposed to assisted dying. Justin Welby described the bill as both

"mistaken and dangerous" he warned if it were passed many elderly and

disabled people would be placed under pressure to end their lives

prematurely. The synod decisively rejected assisted dying in 2012. An

increasing number of Anglicans are prepared to make up their own minds.

A senior bishop said the church believes all human life was

sacrosanct. It's basically says that everybody is of value and is of

value to society and part of our cohesion, as a society, part of our

compassion, is caring for them, looking after them, right up to the

point of their death. The church called this evening for the Assisted

Dying Bill to be withdrawn. It said a Royal Commission should be set up

to investigate this important and complex issue in-depth. .

The United Nations has called for a ceasefire between Israel and

Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Palestine officials say the number

of people killed in Israel airstrikes over the last five days

has risen to more than 130. Israel say it is's targeting militants who

have fired hundreds of rockets into their Terry. From Gaza, our Middle

East editor, Jeremy Bowen reports. There is no such thing

as a surgical strike, even with Israel's modern arsenal,

especially in Gaza's densely packed towns and refugee camps.

This morning, neighbours were digging

in the rubble for Suha Abu Sada. She was killed along with one other

woman, just after dawn, in an Israeli airstrike.

The missile cut through reinforced concrete.

Suha's sister identified her. Suha had multiple handicaps.

This was a home for the disabled. Then someone said the Israelis had

warned another attack was coming. We heard a rocket and took cover.

But it was Hamas, firing into Israel.

At the mortuary Suha's brother, Yusuf, waited for her funeral.

He showed us his sister's body. "How many of the people killed so

far are civilians, and how many are terrorists?

And they're not terrorists, they're resistants,

and we're proud of them." Suha Abu Sada's funeral was quiet,

like her life. The United Nations says that 77%

of the Palestinians killed in this campaign were civilians.

Belligerents are obliged under the laws of war to protect civilians.

The UN has already asked whether Israel is working in the way that it

should to fulfill those obligations. After the attack on the centre

for the disabled, it is clear that the Israelis have

some serious questions to answer. So do Hamas about their attacks,

both sides say they're protecting their people.

Jeremy Bowen, BBC News, Gaza. Our Middle East correspondent,

James Reynolds, is in Tel Aviv. James we've seen lots

of casualties in Gaza. What does Israel say to that?

It says it takes care in selecting its targets. I put Jeremy's

opponents to senior figures today. They give an example of how they go

about their business. If they target a command post from Hamas, in a

home, or a built up area, they say they will issue a warning first.

Fire smoke or make a phone call. They will give people at least 10

minutes to get out before they fire their missile strike. Israel says it

is often aborted strikes, perhaps several hundred strikes for fear of

civilian casualties. Very, very clearly people in Gaza do not

believe Israel's explanations. I think it's worth saying that

Israel's aim of course is to stop all rocket fire. Critically, IDF

sources have been telling us there is still thousands of rockets left

in Palestinian militants hands in the Gaza Strip for that reason many

Israelis believe there should be a ground offensive, but of course

others believe there should be a ceasefire. James Reynolds, in Tel

has been sold to a Chinese company for ?900 million.

The private equity firm, Hony, has bought the chain, which is currently

owned by the Gondola Group, and has more than 400 branches in the UK.

England cricketers James Anderson and Joe Root have broken the record

for the highest last-wicket stand in Test history after scoring 198

runs against India at Trent Bridge. England were all out for 496

in the first innings. James Anderson's face screams as you

as youenter Trent Bridge. He is the worse batsman in the England team.

The batted batting order was rend arered out of orderrd. At the other

end, Joe Root looked every inch the senior player. This four took him to

a century. He had taken the pressure off his team-mates. Specially the

captain. India hurled the ball towards Anderson's chin. He chipped

it to the boundary. This went on all morning. Every run, every missed

opportunity made the whole experience excruciating for India.

Their lead was disappearing in front of their disbelieving eyes. A shot

The last surviving founding member of the influential New York punk

band, The Ramones, Tommy Ramone, has died.

Tommy Ramone was 62 and had been treated for cancer.

He joined The Ramones as a drummer in 1974 and co-produced

their first three albums.
