Israel says its offensive on Gaza may continue for some time, despite

:00:00.:00:11.

mounting calls for a ceasefire. Palestinians in some parts

:00:12.:00:13.

of the territory have been leaving their homes after warnings

:00:14.:00:15.

of further air strikes. After six days of bombardment,

:00:16.:00:26.

the Palestinian death toll has now risen to more than 160.

:00:27.:00:31.

The case for women bishops - the Archbishop

:00:32.:00:36.

of Canterbury speaks out ahead of a crucial vote in the Synod tomorrow.

:00:37.:00:48.

Speak macro and a dramatic goal sees Germany win the World Cup in extra

:00:49.:00:53.

time. Good evening.

:00:54.:01:11.

Thousands of Palestinians left their homes in northern Gaza today after

:01:12.:01:16.

being warned by Israel of further air strikes. The last 24 hours have

:01:17.:01:21.

brought the most sustained bombardment of the six-day

:01:22.:01:23.

offensive. Officials in Gaza say more than 160 people have been

:01:24.:01:26.

killed and the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, has

:01:27.:01:29.

appealed to the United Nations for "international protection". In

:01:30.:01:31.

Israel, there have been no fatalities, although a teenager was

:01:32.:01:33.

injured in a rocket attack today. In a moment, Quentin Sommerville

:01:34.:01:37.

reports from Ashdod on the view in Israel. But first, our Middle East

:01:38.:01:40.

editor, Jeremy Bowen, reports from Gaza.

:01:41.:01:51.

There are some graphic images in this report.

:01:52.:01:56.

Gaza. For much of the night,

:01:57.:01:59.

the wounded and the dead were brought into the hospital.

:02:00.:02:05.

It was the most sustained bombing so far.

:02:06.:02:06.

Gaza was pounded. For Israel, this is self

:02:07.:02:09.

defence with American support. As more civilians die, the pressure

:02:10.:02:11.

for a cease-fire is growing. At the mortuary,

:02:12.:02:20.

the bodies of two children were squeezed onto one shelf.

:02:21.:02:25.

They were running out of room. 17 members of the family,

:02:26.:02:32.

including three other children, were killed in the bombing.

:02:33.:02:37.

The strain showed. This is the third war between Hamas

:02:38.:02:51.

and Israel since 2009. Israel says it goes after Hamas.

:02:52.:02:54.

That is not true. They are children, says a cousin.

:02:55.:02:58.

It is not logical they would be in Hamas.

:02:59.:03:01.

Every time Israel kills Palestinians, especially civilians,

:03:02.:03:08.

Hamas gets a boost of popularity. Israel is not trying to win any

:03:09.:03:12.

friends here but it does want to weaken Hamas as an organisation.

:03:13.:03:18.

Hamas draws strength from the suffering Israel inflicts.

:03:19.:03:24.

When Israel says it is retaliating, so Hamas is responsible,

:03:25.:03:27.

no Palestinian listens. North of Gaza city, most people left

:03:28.:03:37.

their homes after Israel warned it might expand its operations.

:03:38.:03:43.

Mohammed and some of his family were moving after the Israeli deadline.

:03:44.:03:48.

The shelling was close. The displaced families, just as in the

:03:49.:03:58.

last two wars, are in UN schools. They settled in as if it were

:03:59.:04:02.

part of their regular routine. At times like this in Gaza,

:04:03.:04:05.

life and death are overshadowed by one reality.

:04:06.:04:13.

Almost 70 years of conflict with Israel, and no prospect it will end.

:04:14.:04:17.

This man, a strawberry farmer, has nine children

:04:18.:04:25.

and more than 100 grandchildren. He rejected Israel's claims that

:04:26.:04:27.

Hamas uses civilians as human shields.

:04:28.:04:30.

TRANSLATION: It is not true.

:04:31.:04:35.

I have a family and I have seven of my daughters-in-law at home.

:04:36.:04:38.

I would never put Hamas people near my house.

:04:39.:04:43.

Back at the mortuary, they were cleaning up the blood, getting

:04:44.:04:48.

ready for another hard night. The chances are that this war,

:04:49.:04:51.

like the last two will end with a cease-fire.

:04:52.:04:53.

But not yet. Overnight, Israeli military briefly

:04:54.:05:04.

deployed ground troops inside Gaza for the first time

:05:05.:05:07.

since the offensive began. Today Israel's Prime Minister,

:05:08.:05:09.

Benjamin Netanyahu, said he didn't know when

:05:10.:05:12.

the current operation would end and that it could "take a long time".

:05:13.:05:14.

That's in spite of mounting calls for a ceasefire.

:05:15.:05:18.

Our world affairs correspondent, Quentin Sommerville, reports.

:05:19.:05:24.

It is this that Israel wants to stop.

:05:25.:05:27.

Salvos of Hamas rockets heading for its cities that these were

:05:28.:05:31.

filmed by the militants. Israel hits hard.

:05:32.:05:36.

When it strikes Gaza, a warning often comes first.

:05:37.:05:39.

Do you speak Hebrew? An Israeli soldier asks.

:05:40.:05:44.

There was a muffled response, followed by an instruction from you

:05:45.:05:55.

have five minutes to leave. Then this, the missile hits.

:05:56.:06:00.

Four air strikes in Gaza today. The calls are made to

:06:01.:06:06.

minimise civilian casualties. Israel's focus is

:06:07.:06:10.

the destruction of Hamas. Our goal is to achieve sustainable

:06:11.:06:14.

quiet and security for our people. We are doing that by degrading Hamas

:06:15.:06:17.

and other terror capabilities. I am not going to say right now how

:06:18.:06:21.

and when that goal will be achieved, whether by diplomatic

:06:22.:06:25.

and military means but that goal has to be achieved.

:06:26.:06:29.

Rockets from Gaza continue to hit Israel today.

:06:30.:06:36.

This one landing in a southern city. These attacks caused fear

:06:37.:06:42.

and injury but the military advantage is Israel's.

:06:43.:06:46.

The Iron Dome military defence system gives Israel

:06:47.:06:51.

a tactical advantage over Hamas. It is the principal reason why

:06:52.:06:55.

almost a week into the conflict not a single Israeli has been killed.

:06:56.:07:01.

Support for the campaign is almost universal.

:07:02.:07:06.

I think it is necessary but I think they should define goals

:07:07.:07:10.

in a better way and define what they want to achieve.

:07:11.:07:13.

I think it is time to take down Hamas.

:07:14.:07:17.

I think we should go in there and eradicate Hamas.

:07:18.:07:25.

Among the Israelis, there is not widespread support

:07:26.:07:30.

for a ground offensive. That, for now,

:07:31.:07:32.

maybe all that is stopping the conflict from escalating.

:07:33.:07:39.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby,

:07:40.:07:42.

has told the BBC he's "hopeful" the Church of England's ruling body will

:07:43.:07:45.

allow women to become bishops when it votes on the issue tomorrow.

:07:46.:07:49.

A previous attempt two years ago to make the change was defeated

:07:50.:07:53.

by six votes. Our religious affairs correspondent,

:07:54.:07:53.

Robert Pigott, reports. CHOIR MUSIC. At St Mary's,

:07:54.:08:03.

Primrose Hill, in London, celebrating holy communion this

:08:04.:08:05.

morning, the congregation takes Women priests, once seen as

:08:06.:08:07.

unthinkable, are now indispensable. They make up a third of Anglican

:08:08.:08:22.

clergy. We are trying to be Christians.

:08:23.:08:25.

We are people, all of us. Nobody said it had to be men only.

:08:26.:08:28.

Women bishops is a marvellous idea, why did we not do it before?

:08:29.:08:32.

Since the legislation was defeated in 2012, intense

:08:33.:08:35.

negotiations have brought traditionalists new concessions. A

:08:36.:08:42.

male alternative bishop could be requested. Conservative evangelicals

:08:43.:08:49.

say it is not enough. We want to carry on with male leadership in our

:08:50.:08:53.

churches. This package insists that churches need to go to a woman,

:08:54.:08:59.

outside their church, to find out what happens inside the church. That

:09:00.:09:04.

is a problem. That is very difficult for us. Anglican leaders accept that

:09:05.:09:11.

the Church's reputation has been damaged by the long debate over

:09:12.:09:16.

whether to give women equal status. To the general public, it is almost

:09:17.:09:19.

incomprehensible. It is equally incomprehensible we are still

:09:20.:09:24.

talking about it. When do you think we will get a woman bishop? There is

:09:25.:09:35.

a possibility there will be one in 2015, possibly before that. Members

:09:36.:09:41.

of the Synod met at York Minster this morning and prayed for wisdom

:09:42.:09:47.

in making one of the biggest decisions of their lives. It seems

:09:48.:09:52.

they could be on the brink of a historic decision. Breaking the

:09:53.:09:54.

tradition of male only bishops. Not for at least 20 years has the future

:09:55.:10:00.

of the Church swung so decisively on a single vote.

:10:01.:10:10.

Pope Francis has said he believes that the prohibition on

:10:11.:10:13.

Roman Catholic priests marrying can be relaxed in the course of time.

:10:14.:10:17.

In a newspaper interview, the Pope said he would find

:10:18.:10:20.

a way to reverse the rule on celibacy which he said was adopted

:10:21.:10:25.

900 years after the death of Jesus. But the Vatican has cast doubt

:10:26.:10:28.

on the accuracy of some of the words attributed to him.

:10:29.:10:38.

All eight million votes in Afghanistan's hotly disputed

:10:39.:10:40.

Presidential election are going to have to be recounted.

:10:41.:10:42.

The news comes after US Secretary of State John Kerry brokered

:10:43.:10:45.

a deal between presidential contenders Abdullah Abdullah

:10:46.:10:47.

and Ashraf Ghani Ahmadza. Following allegations

:10:48.:10:48.

of vote rigging, part When Afghans queued to cast their

:10:49.:10:56.

vote in a second round presidential race, few would have predicted that

:10:57.:11:11.

the ballots would have to be counted again, all 8 million of them.

:11:12.:11:13.

Not just counted, but scrutinised for signs of fraud.

:11:14.:11:16.

But that is exactly what these two political rivals have signed up to,

:11:17.:11:19.

ending the deadlock in a landmark deal brokered by

:11:20.:11:24.

US Secretary of State John Kerry. Both candidates have committed to

:11:25.:11:27.

participate in and abide by the results of the largest,

:11:28.:11:34.

most comprehensive possible audit. With serious allegations of fraud

:11:35.:11:36.

on both sides threatening to destabilise an entire country,

:11:37.:11:39.

Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani were left with little choice but to

:11:40.:11:44.

take a deep breath and agree. We have committed to

:11:45.:11:48.

the most thorough audit in the history of any election in

:11:49.:11:54.

a developed or developing country. 100%

:11:55.:12:00.

of all the ballots will be audited. Also hammered out

:12:01.:12:02.

in an intense weekend of talks, a blueprint for the future.

:12:03.:12:04.

Whoever wins the presidential race will form a government

:12:05.:12:07.

of national unity, as Afghanistan marks a historic transition.

:12:08.:12:14.

This does feel like a defining moment for the country.

:12:15.:12:17.

This agreement goes far further than many Afghans would have predicted

:12:18.:12:20.

and it is a measure perhaps of the financial, political and

:12:21.:12:23.

military commitment to prevent this country sliding backwards into war.

:12:24.:12:30.

This is what was at stake, the threat of violence and instability.

:12:31.:12:34.

Just days ago, Abdullah supporters rejected provisional results

:12:35.:12:38.

outright, urging him to declare a parallel government.

:12:39.:12:43.

He resisted. It may be several weeks

:12:44.:12:46.

before we know who will be the next president, but they have agreed to

:12:47.:12:49.

a unique pact that hopes to haul Afghanistan back from the brink.

:12:50.:13:00.

Now with news of tonight's World Cup final, and the rest of the sport,

:13:01.:13:04.

here's OIly Foster in Rio de Janeiro.

:13:05.:13:08.

A great night. This tournament started over four weeks ago with

:13:09.:13:15.

such a beast of goals. The 20th World Cup Final had none in normal

:13:16.:13:22.

time between Germany and Argentina. The match was heading to penalties.

:13:23.:13:29.

24 years after they last won it, Germany are world champions once

:13:30.:13:36.

again. It felt like but Ball fantasy, the greatest prize in the

:13:37.:13:42.

sport at its most iconic venue. -- football fantasy. There was promised

:13:43.:13:49.

to deliver a fitting climax to a memorable tournament. It had been

:13:50.:13:52.

billed as Germany versus Lionel Messi. They made it feel like a home

:13:53.:14:09.

game for the South Americans. This misplaced header with the

:14:10.:14:12.

Argentinian 's big moment blown. Almost immediately he appeared to

:14:13.:14:18.

have made amends but Argentina where once again frustrated. The

:14:19.:14:21.

Argentinian was offside. Germany survived and responded well. They

:14:22.:14:30.

were denied by the post. A breathless first half somehow ended

:14:31.:14:34.

goalless. The scene was set for someone to illuminate the game. The

:14:35.:14:37.

man most likely to deliver could not. Even Lionel Messi was unable to

:14:38.:14:44.

break the deadlock. And so to extra time, with the game on a knife edge

:14:45.:14:49.

and penalties looming. Something special was needed. The substitute

:14:50.:14:58.

's wonderful finish exactly the kind of goal that deserves to win a World

:14:59.:15:02.

Cup final. The shattered Argentinians had no time to recover

:15:03.:15:06.

and Germany had one. This is what it meant to the players who had become

:15:07.:15:13.

world champions. And to the tens of thousands watching back home in

:15:14.:15:16.

Berlin. Germany has had to wait almost a quarter of this entry for

:15:17.:15:21.

this moment. A golden generation of talent had finally come of age.

:15:22.:15:29.

Let's cross live to the stadium and speak to down. This was very much a

:15:30.:15:37.

team triumph, wasn't it? The tournament 's best team won. It may

:15:38.:15:42.

be Germany 's fourth World Cup triumph but they have had to wait 24

:15:43.:15:48.

years since the last one. It is the first since unification. They had

:15:49.:15:52.

all the momentum after the astonishing demolition of Brazil in

:15:53.:15:56.

the semifinals. Germany deserve huge credit for this. They have won a

:15:57.:16:01.

World Cup on South American soil. Because of the countries 's emphasis

:16:02.:16:06.

on home-grown talent and putting in place systems to support their

:16:07.:16:09.

national footballing team, England will be asked to look and learn from

:16:10.:16:15.

what the Germans have achieved. For Argentina, huge disappointment.

:16:16.:16:20.

Lionel Messi unable to cap a huge career. It has been a World Cup to

:16:21.:16:27.

remember. After so much scrutiny at how the sport is run, it is exactly

:16:28.:16:30.

what football needed. in Rio de Janeiro.

:16:31.:16:38.

Golf now. And the Open starts on Thursday

:16:39.:16:41.

at Hoylake and Justin Rose is on a great run of form.

:16:42.:16:43.

He won on the American Tour last week

:16:44.:16:46.

and with victory in Aberdeen at the Scottish Open today the Englishman

:16:47.:16:49.

has won back to back tournaments for the first time in his career.

:16:50.:16:52.

He won by two shots after a faultless round that included six

:16:53.:16:55.

birdies to finish on 16 under par. The American Mo Martin won Women's

:16:56.:16:58.

British Open at Royal Birkdale. It's her first title

:16:59.:17:01.

and it was secured with an eagle on the last to win by a single stroke.

:17:02.:17:07.

And England have drawn the First Test against India at Trent Bridge.

:17:08.:17:21.

This report from John Watson. England needed early wickets. Step

:17:22.:17:29.

into the spotlight, Stuart Broad. In the mood and in full flow, another

:17:30.:17:37.

followed five runs later. The English captain was out of runs and

:17:38.:17:40.

out of luck. A change of bowler, another breakthrough. A timely

:17:41.:17:46.

introduction averting the glare on this cat ten. If victory were to be

:17:47.:17:51.

realised, England needed wickets and quickly. A record 81 runs with the

:17:52.:17:57.

bat yesterday, Anderson with the breakthrough after lunch. The lower

:17:58.:18:01.

order batsmen proved tricky to dismiss. Match drawn but still time

:18:02.:18:05.

for Alastair Cook to make amends for the early fumble. No victory

:18:06.:18:10.

celebrations but the champagne moment for England 's beleaguered

:18:11.:18:11.

captain. Test against India at Trent Bridge.

:18:12.:18:18.

And that is all your sport tonight. But, at the end of this World Cup,

:18:19.:18:21.

let's just show you what is happening on Copacabana Beach.

:18:22.:18:30.
