Israel has resumed its military offensive in Gaza

:00:19.:00:24.

Eight more people are reported to have been killed this morning

:00:25.:00:28.

Palestinian militants have launched more rocket attacks on Israel.

:00:29.:00:33.

From Gaza our correspondent Chris Morris reports.

:00:34.:00:45.

Early this morning, the shelling resumed. Hamas had continued to fire

:00:46.:00:52.

rockets at Israel. And this was Israel's response. Heavy fire into

:00:53.:00:59.

districts all along this narrow strip of land. And while Israel

:01:00.:01:05.

insists that it's only targeting Hamas and its infrastructure, the

:01:06.:01:10.

vast majority of the dead and injured are Palestinian civilians.

:01:11.:01:17.

Already fresh casualties are arriving here at Gaza City's main

:01:18.:01:21.

hospital. These are victims of shelling in the eastern district.

:01:22.:01:25.

Any hopes of a peaceful holiday to mark the end of the Muslim holy

:01:26.:01:33.

month of Ramadan appear to be dashed. Hamas then announced another

:01:34.:01:38.

truce. Will it take hold? No-one can be sure. The devastation is already

:01:39.:01:46.

staggering. This was a northern town during the ceasefire yesterday. A

:01:47.:01:51.

huge crater caused by an air strike and nearby houses in ruins.

:01:52.:01:56.

TRANSLATION: What use is a truce to us now? They destroyed all our homes

:01:57.:02:03.

just before the ceasefire began. This is where it ends for too many

:02:04.:02:08.

people in Gaza. A burial without ceremony in a patch of waste ground.

:02:09.:02:13.

This man's body had been hidden beneath the rubble for seven days.

:02:14.:02:20.

On the makeshift headstone, they scrawl his name. Now, Gaza will be

:02:21.:02:23.

braced for much worse to come. Our correspondent Bethany Bell

:02:24.:02:28.

is in Jerusalem. Is it clear how Israel intends to go

:02:29.:02:39.

forward from now? The Israeli security cabinet is due to meet

:02:40.:02:43.

later today to discuss that very question. We understand that some

:02:44.:02:49.

ministers may want to broaden the Gaza operation while others may want

:02:50.:02:53.

to see the offensive going on as it is. The priority for the army is to

:02:54.:03:00.

destroy the network of cross-border tunnels through which Palestinian

:03:01.:03:04.

militants have been trying to get into Israel. Certainly, from what we

:03:05.:03:07.

are seeing at the moment, there doesn't seem to be much sign that

:03:08.:03:13.

the government is preparing to go along with the international

:03:14.:03:17.

pressure for a more long-term ceasefire. For now, as well, the

:03:18.:03:21.

people of Israel are strongly behind the army. They say they are

:03:22.:03:26.

concerned about the rocket fire, they are concerned about the

:03:27.:03:29.

continuing threat from the tunnels and they say it is the job of the

:03:30.:03:31.

army to protect Israel. The Prime Minister says he doesn't

:03:32.:03:35.

support any immediate move to strip Russia of the right to host

:03:36.:03:38.

the 2018 World Cup. Earlier the Deputy Prime Minister,

:03:39.:03:45.

Nick Clegg said it would be "unthinkable" for the tournament to

:03:46.:03:47.

be staged in Russia because of its Our political correspondent

:03:48.:03:51.

Ross Hawkins is here. Is there a split at the top of the

:03:52.:04:00.

Government? There is a difference of emphasis. At Number Ten, they are

:04:01.:04:08.

emphasising the fact that Nick Clegg said "if" - if it continued along

:04:09.:04:13.

the path it had been going along. Labour have a lot of ifs in their

:04:14.:04:17.

position - if Russia is proved responsible for the fate of Flight

:04:18.:04:23.

MH17, and if they continue to support separatists then they say

:04:24.:04:25.

there will be questions about this. It is worth remembering Nick Clegg

:04:26.:04:29.

has gone further than his colleagues before. He decided no Lib Dem

:04:30.:04:32.

Minister would attend the Winter Olympics in Sochi in protest about

:04:33.:04:37.

Russian anti-gay legislation and certainly Liberal Democrats will

:04:38.:04:41.

hope that amid the complexity of talk about sanctions and diplomacy,

:04:42.:04:45.

this would be a simple threat that the public, that the Russians and

:04:46.:04:47.

the world could easily understand. The Labour leader Ed Miliband has

:04:48.:04:51.

said the public should have their own version

:04:52.:04:53.

of Prime Minister's Questions. MPs currently put questions to

:04:54.:04:55.

the Prime Minister on a Wednesday. Mr Miliband says voters should be

:04:56.:04:59.

allowed to do the same, Our political correspondent

:05:00.:05:02.

Adam Fleming reports. It's got insults... The right

:05:03.:05:13.

honourable gentleman is acting like a con man. Unlike him, Lady Thatcher

:05:14.:05:20.

won the general election! It's got questions. Has he ever had a

:05:21.:05:25.

conversation with Lynton Crosby about plain cigarette packaging...

:05:26.:05:29.

And sometimes answers. He's never lobbied me on anything. The Labour

:05:30.:05:32.

Leader says PMQs is missing something. The public. We need a

:05:33.:05:39.

public question time where regularly the Prime Minister submits himself

:05:40.:05:43.

or herself to questioning from members of the public in the Palace

:05:44.:05:48.

of Westminster on Wednesdays, so that - why is that important? I want

:05:49.:05:53.

to let the public in to our politics! Westminster is a

:05:54.:05:58.

traditional place. So it is unlikely we will see ordinary voters sitting

:05:59.:06:02.

on the benches. PMQs will take place over there in Westminster Hall where

:06:03.:06:06.

the Commons has a lesser known sister chamber. Would you be first

:06:07.:06:10.

in the queue if PMQs happened? I would. I have lots of questions. If

:06:11.:06:16.

you could get a ticket for this PMQs, what would you ask? Oh, that's

:06:17.:06:25.

a good question! Some polling experts believe the public cares

:06:26.:06:31.

most about what politicians do. Voters really want the economy to

:06:32.:06:35.

function, crime to be tackled, immigration to be tackled, decent

:06:36.:06:39.

schools and hospitals. They say they want to be involved, but what they

:06:40.:06:44.

want is for these things to go well. Number Ten said the Prime Minister

:06:45.:06:48.

already faces voters in regular question and answer sessions but he

:06:49.:06:52.

is open to ways of getting the public more involved in politics.

:06:53.:07:00.

At the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow there are 24 gold medals

:07:01.:07:02.

The first gold of the day went to Australia's Michael

:07:03.:07:05.

Our sports correspondent Natalie Pirks rounds up the day so far.

:07:06.:07:09.

Her report does contain some flash photography from the start.

:07:10.:07:14.

With Usain Bolt in town, today it was a marathon not a sprint that

:07:15.:07:22.

started off the athletics. The 25 men were out first and despite

:07:23.:07:26.

missing some major stars, there were still some great stories, and when

:07:27.:07:40.

the women went out, there were seven home nation athletes competing. This

:07:41.:07:44.

is the biggest spectator weekend of the Games, one of three free events

:07:45.:07:51.

here and big crowds are expected to pack the finish line. With a grimace

:07:52.:07:58.

on his face, Michael Shelley, the Commonwealth silver medallist from

:07:59.:08:02.

Delhi, kicked on to claim gold and a new personal best. In the women's

:08:03.:08:07.

race, Flomena Cheyech Daniel added Commonwealth gold to her Paris

:08:08.:08:18.

marathon win. There were smiles all round for England's

:08:19.:08:24.

marathon win. There were smiles all Kerwood, she won gold. Great news

:08:25.:08:29.

for Scotland in the men's pair lawns bowls, they came back to beat

:08:30.:08:31.

England 16-15. Cricket -

:08:32.:08:35.

and England captain Alastair Cook won the toss and chose to bat

:08:36.:08:37.

in the Third Test against India He's under pressure to perform

:08:38.:08:40.

after facing calls to stand down, as our sports correspondent

:08:41.:08:46.

Joe Wilson reports. Ready or not, here it comes. 11.00am

:08:47.:09:00.

when the umpire says it starts - it starts! So facing up, Alastair Cook

:09:01.:09:05.

under intense scrutiny, about a metre short of a first-ball nought.

:09:06.:09:14.

Cook on 15, there was the tentative push. Where was the catch? If this

:09:15.:09:19.

was to be Cook's great recovery, India were giving him every

:09:20.:09:23.

opportunity. Starting a Test Match on a Sunday, not to everyone's

:09:24.:09:27.

taste, at least it was sunny! Cook was starting to look good,

:09:28.:09:32.

seriously. Advised by England's captains of the recent past to take

:09:33.:09:39.

a break, Cook opts to battle. England were past 50 and starting to

:09:40.:09:45.

feel at ease when Sam Robson fell. Robson could use some runs, too. But

:09:46.:09:48.

Cook will resume 48 not out, morning which may have changed the

:09:49.:09:50.

course of his career. The next news on BBC One is at

:09:51.:09:59.

4.50pm. Bye for now. Thank you for joining me. It is time

:10:00.:10:16.

to have a look at what Mother Nature has up her sleeve this week.

:10:17.:10:20.
