The Prime Minister vows to hunt down the extremists responsible

:00:07.:00:09.

for the brutal murder of a British aid worker.

:00:10.:00:13.

David Haines, a father of two, was beheaded 18 months after he was

:00:14.:00:16.

David has been murdered in the most callous and brutal way imaginable,

:00:17.:00:30.

by an organisation which is the embodiment of evil.

:00:31.:00:34.

With another Briton threatened by Islamic State jihadists,

:00:35.:00:36.

we'll be assessing what action the government could now pursue.

:00:37.:00:38.

Also on the programme, the final days of campaigning in Scotland.

:00:39.:00:41.

Both sides target crucial undecided voters.

:00:42.:00:46.

And Wayne Rooney helps Manchester United to their first league win

:00:47.:00:51.

The aid worker David Haines, held for 18 months in Syria,

:00:52.:01:13.

before being murdered, has been called a British hero by

:01:14.:01:16.

the Prime Minister, after a video released by Islamic State extremists

:01:17.:01:19.

David Cameron has described the murder as an act of pure evil.

:01:20.:01:27.

Our World Affairs Correspondent Caroline Hawley's report does not

:01:28.:01:29.

include any moving pictures from the video,

:01:30.:01:31.

but it does contain a still image, which you may find distressing.

:01:32.:01:39.

His family had only just appealed to his kidnappers to make contact when

:01:40.:01:46.

they gave the chilling response. The video, similar to those posted after

:01:47.:01:51.

the murders of two American journalists, though tailored this

:01:52.:01:56.

time to a Brit audience, and it includes a threat to kill another

:01:57.:02:02.

British hostage. The captors seems to be the same man with the same

:02:03.:02:05.

British accent seen in previous videos. This British man has Depay

:02:06.:02:13.

the price of your promise, Cameron, to arm them against the Islamic

:02:14.:02:18.

state. David Cameron convened the government's emergency committee,

:02:19.:02:21.

his resolve currently only strengthened by what he called an

:02:22.:02:27.

unspeakable act. David Haines was a British hero. The fact that an aid

:02:28.:02:32.

worker was taken, held and brutally murdered at the hands of ISIL sums

:02:33.:02:36.

up what this organisation stands for. They are killing and

:02:37.:02:40.

slaughtering thousands of people, Muslims, Christians, minorities

:02:41.:02:47.

across Iraq and Syria. They boast of the brutality. They claim to do this

:02:48.:02:50.

in the name of Islam. That is nonsense. Islam is a religion of

:02:51.:02:57.

peace. They are not Muslims, they are monsters. This was David Haines

:02:58.:03:03.

in Croatia, filmed in 2003, he spoke of helping people return to homes

:03:04.:03:08.

they had abandoned in the War of the 1990s. There are many people who do

:03:09.:03:14.

want to return but they just know how awful to turn to. In doing this,

:03:15.:03:17.

our office normally goes across to Belgrade and actually meets the

:03:18.:03:21.

people so they can gain trust from us. From here in the Balkans, via

:03:22.:03:27.

Africa, David Haines went to the Middle East. When he was captured in

:03:28.:03:31.

March last year, he had been working with a French aid agency, helping

:03:32.:03:36.

supply food, water and tense to refugees in northern Syria. He had

:03:37.:03:39.

been in the country for just a few days. He was very, very happy to go.

:03:40.:03:51.

David found working in difficult conditions, working for people in

:03:52.:03:58.

times of hardship brought him a job satisfaction. My first reaction

:03:59.:04:06.

could be one of hatred. But my brother's life wasn't about hatred,

:04:07.:04:11.

it was about love for all men. After the murder first of James Foley,

:04:12.:04:16.

then Stephen Sotloff, David Haines is the third Western hostage to be

:04:17.:04:20.

killed since American air strikes against the so-called Islamic State

:04:21.:04:23.

began last month. The other man shown in the video is Alan Henning,

:04:24.:04:29.

filmed by the BBC last year, helping prepare a convoy of humanitarian

:04:30.:04:34.

supplies for Syrian refugees. He is a 47-year-old taxi driver from

:04:35.:04:38.

Salford, aware of the dangers of going to Syria, but moved to risk

:04:39.:04:42.

his life to alleviate the suffering of civilians. David Haines,

:04:43.:04:48.

husband, humanitarian, 44-year-old father of two, described as a man of

:04:49.:04:54.

unstoppable enthusiasm. His family said he would be missed, terribly.

:04:55.:04:57.

The murder of David Haines will bring renewed

:04:58.:04:59.

focus on British and Western efforts to combat the threat of Islamic

:05:00.:05:02.

In his statement, David Cameron said he would take

:05:03.:05:06.

Our Security Correspondent Frank Gardner looks at the options

:05:07.:05:11.

US air strikes on the so-called Islamic State are having an effect.

:05:12.:05:25.

So too are Britain's armed supplies to curb this forces fighting the

:05:26.:05:29.

jihadists. Islamic State fighters have been driven back from some of

:05:30.:05:33.

the recent gains in Iraq, partly due to those US air strikes. Britain has

:05:34.:05:38.

not so far joined in but the murder of a British hostage Draxler UK deep

:05:39.:05:44.

into this conflict. I have no doubts in my mind that the beheading of

:05:45.:05:50.

David Haines will deepen and widen Britain's involvement in both Iraq

:05:51.:05:54.

and Syria. Britain is most likely now to take a more active role and

:05:55.:05:58.

join the marathon campaign against the so-called Islamic State. So what

:05:59.:06:04.

exactly are the UK Government's options in confronting the so-called

:06:05.:06:07.

Islamic State? David Cameron has said humanitarian aid to displaced

:06:08.:06:11.

refugees in Iraq and Syria will continue. So too will RAF supply

:06:12.:06:19.

fights of arms and -- flight of arms and ammunition continue to the code

:06:20.:06:26.

fighters. There has also been intense discussions over whether or

:06:27.:06:32.

not Britain should now join in. Whatever is decided, the UK is

:06:33.:06:37.

likely to be more engaged than ever in confronting the Islamic State on

:06:38.:06:41.

many levels, with all the encompassing risk for stock US

:06:42.:06:44.

special forces like this tried and failed to rescue Western hostages

:06:45.:06:48.

held by Islamic State in Syria back in July, so this won't be seen as an

:06:49.:06:56.

ongoing solution. On the ground in Iraq, government forces and militias

:06:57.:07:00.

badly need outside help, hence the international coalition now being

:07:01.:07:04.

assembled. Australia is sending a squadron of FA 18 attack planes.

:07:05.:07:09.

Australians were told today this could be a long haul. I have to warn

:07:10.:07:16.

the Australian people that should this preparation and deployment

:07:17.:07:20.

extend into combat operations, that this could go on for quite some

:07:21.:07:26.

time. The fighting on the ground against Islamic State is being done

:07:27.:07:32.

by local forces. Here celebrating even the slightest gain. The West

:07:33.:07:36.

does not want to get its troops bogged down in another ground war

:07:37.:07:40.

but this is a messy conflict, with no clear and insight. -- no clear

:07:41.:07:46.

end in sight. Our Political Correspondent Chris

:07:47.:07:49.

Mason is live Chris, the government is already

:07:50.:07:50.

under pressure over Syria, For some, it will increase the

:07:51.:07:59.

pressure on the Prime Minister and they will make the case that air

:08:00.:08:03.

strikes should come soon, but whilst we saw very strong language from

:08:04.:08:07.

David Cameron today, the strategy from the government, in terms of its

:08:08.:08:11.

response to Islamic State, remains the same. They want a strategy that

:08:12.:08:14.

is seen to be resilient, in the words of one official to be seen to

:08:15.:08:18.

be methodical. We have seen it slowly ratcheting up, the response

:08:19.:08:22.

to Islamic State, firstly with the humanitarian support them with the

:08:23.:08:26.

RAF Tornado reconnaissance flights that we were just hearing about from

:08:27.:08:30.

Frank Gardner as second ago. The Prime Minister wants to argue that

:08:31.:08:35.

he is taking things carefully and slowly, building an international

:08:36.:08:38.

coalition in the region and beyond, building a domestic coalition as

:08:39.:08:42.

well, because he is well aware that there is a war weariness in the UK

:08:43.:08:46.

following the Iraq conflict the decade ago. There was that bruising

:08:47.:08:51.

defeat for David Cameron a year ago over military action in Syria, so he

:08:52.:08:55.

wants to tread carefully. Yes, many MPs this time to appear persuadable.

:08:56.:08:59.

Labour appear persuadable without committing to anything yet and there

:09:00.:09:04.

are some MPs have been to see the Prime Minister, conservatives in the

:09:05.:09:07.

last couple of days, to make the case for air strikes now and the

:09:08.:09:10.

result has stiffened with the news in the last 24 hours. They say this

:09:11.:09:14.

is a British fatality with a British accented jihadist, and the threat

:09:15.:09:19.

level here in the UK has been raised because of the fear of attacks here.

:09:20.:09:23.

They are convinced that the Prime Minister is aware but others are not

:09:24.:09:26.

yet and they still needs to be more strongly.

:09:27.:09:29.

The leaders of both sides in the Scottish independence

:09:30.:09:37.

referendum say Thursday's vote will be a once-in-a-generation decision.

:09:38.:09:39.

With just four days to go, the Yes and the No campaigns have been busy

:09:40.:09:42.

Our Political Correspondent Iain Watson reports from Glasgow.

:09:43.:09:47.

CHANTING Tensions are running high as the

:09:48.:09:56.

referendum campaign begins to draw to a close first Glasgow and a

:09:57.:10:03.

thousand yes made a noisy protest against BBC coverage, regarding it

:10:04.:10:07.

as more British than Scottish, while in Edinburgh the corporation was

:10:08.:10:10.

being scrupulously fair in deciding who they interviewed first to see

:10:11.:10:16.

who was interviewed first. By tossing a coin. He was asked, Alex

:10:17.:10:20.

Salmond, if he could envisage another referendum if there was a

:10:21.:10:23.

close vote, but he wants to win this one, so his message to potential

:10:24.:10:29.

supporters? It's now or never. My view is it is a once in a

:10:30.:10:32.

generation, perhaps even a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for

:10:33.:10:36.

Scotland. Flowers of Scotland at a Glasgow garden centre. The Yes

:10:37.:10:40.

campaign have tried to grow the vote against an older generation more

:10:41.:10:44.

likely to vote no. Trying to convince them that their incomes are

:10:45.:10:48.

safe in retirement, but will it work? I have voted no. We don't

:10:49.:10:52.

really know too much about what's going to happen. If it doesn't work

:10:53.:10:56.

out, there is no turning back. I am voting yes. So you don't need

:10:57.:11:04.

convincing? I don't. Labour campaigners were out in Scotland's

:11:05.:11:09.

streets with the aims of persuading more than half a billion voters who

:11:10.:11:12.

are yet to make up their minds to say no. Yes campaigners have written

:11:13.:11:17.

an open letter to Labour supporters trying to back independence as a way

:11:18.:11:21.

to get the Conservatives out of government in Scotland. As well as

:11:22.:11:25.

trying to win over undecided voters, the No campaign has to shore up the

:11:26.:11:31.

Labour vote. Alistair Darling, leader of the better together

:11:32.:11:33.

campaign, stressed that the referendum should not be confused

:11:34.:11:35.

with a general election. The result is rather more permanent. It's not

:11:36.:11:40.

like an election where you can change your mind of things that work

:11:41.:11:43.

out. If things go wrong this time, we have already voted, we are

:11:44.:11:47.

leaving, there is no way back. It has been very vigorous and positive

:11:48.:11:51.

in many ways... They did not necessarily look better together.

:11:52.:11:54.

While both men said they admired each other's abilities, you can see

:11:55.:11:58.

from the face is how much is at stake. We had some words from the

:11:59.:12:03.

Queen today? That's right. We have seen passions running high in the

:12:04.:12:05.

streets of Scotland but this rather unusual intervention took place in

:12:06.:12:12.

Balmoral. A well-wishers said to the Queen, look, I'm not going to talk

:12:13.:12:16.

to you about the referendum, and she replied in full if shot of the

:12:17.:12:21.

press, I hope people think very carefully about the future. That

:12:22.:12:25.

intervention is not anywhere near as blatant as back in the 1970s, when

:12:26.:12:28.

they were talking about devolution, she reminded us that she was crowned

:12:29.:12:33.

Queen of the United Kingdom, and certainly the Palace say that her

:12:34.:12:37.

comments today do not breach any constitutional duty to it

:12:38.:12:40.

impartiality, but they demonstrate that the chilly everyone who is in

:12:41.:12:44.

Scotland at the moment is taking the result of this referendum very

:12:45.:12:47.

seriously indeed. -- virtually everyone.

:13:03.:13:07.

Can money by success? It seems in the case of Louis van Gaal it.

:13:08.:13:20.

Without a win this season, the new Manchester United manager spent ?150

:13:21.:13:24.

million on new signings and this afternoon, United finally picked up

:13:25.:13:29.

their first victory, beating QPR 4-0 at Old Trafford. A fresh start for

:13:30.:13:36.

Manchester United. Count the new faces after Louis van der Walt's

:13:37.:13:41.

summer of spending. But one was very familiar. Rio Ferdinand spent 12

:13:42.:13:44.

years at Old Trafford. His return in a QPR shirt was marked with a gift

:13:45.:13:48.

from Sir Bobby Charlton. But that was it for sentimentality. United

:13:49.:13:53.

had reinvention to get on with. Fittingly, it was led by Angel Di

:13:54.:13:59.

Mar?a. ?16 million he had cost, and this -- ?60 million, he had cost and

:14:00.:14:05.

this was the moment Old Trafford got a new hero. Ander Herrera cost half

:14:06.:14:10.

as much but Hebrew root -- heap food value for money or so. Wayne Rooney

:14:11.:14:16.

then stepped up, QPR stood back and watched as the captain made it three

by half-time. At the start of act two, Juan Mata found himself

centrestage, but soon all eyes were on another new member of the United

had to settle for third place overall. Wiggins had started the day

:14:45.:14:48.

in seventh but moved into a podium place after winning the time trial

this morning in London. But in the final stage, Holland's Dylan fan
