A desperate search continues for more than 100 people missing

:00:00.:00:07.

There've been moments of triumph for the rescuers,

:00:08.:00:13.

as they focus on one huge apartment block that crumpled under the shock.

:00:14.:00:18.

Well after several hours with no good news, we've suddenly

:00:19.:00:21.

First they brought the little boy alive, now they've brought this

:00:22.:00:27.

adult, and we understand there are two more who are about to be

:00:28.:00:30.

We'll have the latest on the rescue operation.

:00:31.:00:34.

Also tonight - Trapped at the Syrian border -

:00:35.:00:37.

35,000 people fleeing the latest fighting plead to be

:00:38.:00:41.

Charities are told they must use public donations,

:00:42.:00:46.

not taxpayers' money, if they want to engage

:00:47.:00:48.

And in the Six Nations championship, England retain the Calcutta Cup -

:00:49.:00:59.

Rescuers are working through the night in Taiwan,

:01:00.:01:21.

as they search for more than 100 people, who are still missing

:01:22.:01:24.

14 people are known to have died, with more than 500 injured.

:01:25.:01:29.

The centre of the quake was close to the city of Tainan,

:01:30.:01:32.

where the main search is focused on the ruins of a 17-storey

:01:33.:01:35.

From there, our correspondent Rupert Wingfield-Hayes reports.

:01:36.:01:47.

Nearly 24 hours after the earthquake struck here, they have not given up

:01:48.:01:50.

This is now the focus of the rescue, a huge 17-storey apartment block

:01:51.:01:57.

ripped from its foundations and now lying on its back.

:01:58.:02:06.

All day they've been pulling people out alive.

:02:07.:02:12.

This woman is one of more than 200 residents who have

:02:13.:02:15.

But as night returns, dozens of relatives still waited

:02:16.:02:22.

anxiously, their eyes red with worry.

:02:23.:02:29.

This woman says she's waiting for news of her niece,

:02:30.:02:32.

her niece's husband and two children, all still missing.

:02:33.:02:38.

On the other side of the building, they're digging for this woman's

:02:39.:02:41.

"Don't be scared," she tells her family on the phone,

:02:42.:02:47.

The rescuers have heard a noise, she tells me, they're pretty sure

:02:48.:02:55.

Then the moment she's been waiting for.

:02:56.:03:07.

Minutes later, on the other side of the building, another rescue.

:03:08.:03:13.

After several hours with no good news, we've suddenly had a flurry.

:03:14.:03:16.

First they brought the little boy out alive, now they brought

:03:17.:03:19.

We understand there are two more who are about to be brought

:03:20.:03:25.

It's a boost to those still waiting anxiously for news,

:03:26.:03:30.

but the grim truth is the easy rescues have now all been done,

:03:31.:03:33.

and there are still over 100 people missing inside the rubble.

:03:34.:03:40.

And we can talk to Rupert at the scene of those rescue efforts.

:03:41.:03:45.

Is there still hope that they can find more survivors? Yes, I think

:03:46.:03:53.

there is. I can tell you, dawn is rising here. It's just after 6am.

:03:54.:03:57.

We're past 24 hours, we're into the second day of this rescue, but

:03:58.:04:02.

behind me, you may not be able to see because this soldier is here,

:04:03.:04:06.

but there is a rescue going on there. They think people are still

:04:07.:04:10.

alive that they are burrowing through to get to as we speak. They

:04:11.:04:14.

are still hopeful of bringing more people out alive. With 100 people

:04:15.:04:19.

still missing, they're concerned that not all those people will be

:04:20.:04:22.

found alive. There's anger here, I would say. Because this building

:04:23.:04:26.

should not have come down. It should have with stood this earthquake.

:04:27.:04:30.

Most of the buildings around here are unscathed. People here feel

:04:31.:04:33.

there must have been something wrong with this building for it to come

:04:34.:04:36.

down with an earthquake of this scale. Taiwan is in a major

:04:37.:04:41.

earthquake zone. Buildings are designed to withstand much larger

:04:42.:04:45.

earthquakes than this, yet this 17-storey building came down. That

:04:46.:04:49.

will now be the focus of a lot of inquiries as well. Thank you very

:04:50.:04:50.

much. There are warnings of

on the Turkey-Syria border. Thousands of people in several

:07:23.:07:27.

cities across Europe have protested against what they say

is the Islamisation The biggest march took place

:07:30.:07:32.

in the German city of Dresden, where the anti-Islam Pegida

:07:33.:07:41.

movement was founded. There was also a protest in Calais.

:07:42.:07:57.

Prosecutors there investigate recent attacks on migrants.

Banned by the government, but they took to the streets anyway.

that they claim are ruining their lives and the port of Calais.

TRANSLATION: We must not let Calais die.

:08:28.:08:30.

Calais is part of France, Calais is France.

:08:31.:08:33.

What started off as a quiet protest here today in

:08:34.:08:36.

Armed police kettled off this main road in the centre of town

:08:37.:08:41.

Following some eruptions of violence police made a number of arrests.

:08:42.:08:48.

This was one of several such demonstrations that took place

:08:49.:08:51.

Amongst some on the north coast of France there is a growing

:08:52.:08:58.

resentment towards the 6000 or so migrants living

:08:59.:09:02.

here in desperate conditions, trying to cross the Channel into Britain.

:09:03.:09:05.

And that resentment has turned to violence, with a spate of attacks

:09:06.:09:09.

Last week, Ahmed and his friends were assaulted by around ten men

:09:10.:09:15.

I make two operations, one in my head, here,

:09:16.:09:21.

I repaired my cheek because it was broken.

:09:22.:09:30.

Ahmed's friend was in hospital for four days after the assault,

:09:31.:09:33.

treated for severe concussion and a bleed on the brain.

:09:34.:09:36.

This volunteer run legal centre in the so-called Jungle camp has

:09:37.:09:39.

been helping several men who suffered similar attacks.

:09:40.:09:42.

For the last two weeks we have recorded more than 20 attacks,

:09:43.:09:46.

that we have been able to record, because some people

:09:47.:09:50.

Living in appalling conditions, many of these migrants say

:09:51.:09:56.

they were forced to flee from violence in their own countries.

:09:57.:09:59.

Now some are facing a backlash, even as they seek safety abroad.

:10:00.:10:02.

Five skiers have been killed in a huge avalanche near Innsbruck

:10:03.:10:11.

17 people were caught up in the avalanche,

:10:12.:10:16.

which was reported to be two kilometres wide

:10:17.:10:19.

Those who died were all from the Czech Republic.

:10:20.:10:24.

A number of survivors are being treated in hospital.

:10:25.:10:28.

A man in his 40s has been shot during a break-in at a house in

:10:29.:10:35.

aville annal in Essex. Two men forced their way into the property.

:10:36.:10:38.

It's believed the victim was shot in the leg, after locking himself in a

:10:39.:10:41.

bedroom. Police are looking for two men in their 20s.

:10:42.:10:44.

The Government has been criticised over plans to ban charities

:10:45.:10:47.

and other organisations from using public money

:10:48.:10:49.

Under the new rules to be introduced in May, charities would be

:10:50.:10:55.

restricted to using only money raised privately for anything deemed

:10:56.:10:57.

Our political correspondent, Eleanor Garnier, is here.

:10:58.:11:03.

Why does the Government want to do this? The Government gets pressured

:11:04.:11:09.

into changing its policies all the time on lots of issues, like the

:11:10.:11:13.

minimum price for alcohol, a sugar tax and it gets done by lots of

:11:14.:11:17.

organisations, big business, industry, but also, bodies that are

:11:18.:11:21.

partly funded by the taxpayer through Government grants, like

:11:22.:11:24.

charities. The Government thinks actually that is wrong. It says if

:11:25.:11:29.

charities want to do this kind of so-called lobbying, they should pay

:11:30.:11:31.

for it with money they've raised themselves. This hasn't gone down

:11:32.:11:35.

well in the charities sector. It's called the changes Draconian. It

:11:36.:11:39.

says charities play a vital role in informing the whole decision-make

:11:40.:11:46.

progress. But also, a senior Conservative MP Sarah Woolaston,

:11:47.:11:49.

she's been critical too, saying that actually when it comes to public

:11:50.:11:53.

health, these changes will tip the balance in favour of those who have

:11:54.:11:57.

vested interests, the big business and industry and away from

:11:58.:12:00.

charities, which she said is a very worrying move.

:12:01.:12:01.

Thank you. With all the sport, here's

:12:02.:12:05.

Karthi Gnanasegaram Eddie Jones's era as England's rugby

:12:06.:12:07.

Union head coach started with a 15-9 victory over Scotland

:12:08.:12:13.

in the Six Nations. Scotland's head coach,

:12:14.:12:16.

Vern Cotter, said his players were very disappointed

:12:17.:12:19.

to begin their campaign with defeat. In the day's other match,

:12:20.:12:23.

France narrowly beat Italy 23-21. Our correspondent, Joe Wilson,

:12:24.:12:25.

reports from Murrayfield. When you strip it back to basics,

:12:26.:12:38.

what's it all about? The pride of representing a country, the

:12:39.:12:42.

inspiration that pours from an occasion like this one. And another

:12:43.:12:47.

anthem, sung in an Australian accent. England's new coach urged

:12:48.:12:53.

his team to get back to basics, like organisation and strength in the

:12:54.:13:00.

forward pack. England's lead, well steady, it was soon down to just a

:13:01.:13:05.

point. Scottish penalties left the halftime score 7-6. What often makes

:13:06.:13:10.

Rugby Union worth watching is when the ball goes far and wide. Right

:13:11.:13:16.

out here to Cornwall, the winger made in Truro, Jack Knoll, to find

:13:17.:13:21.

space when there's almost known, the art of scoring rgs right by the

:13:22.:13:25.

corner flag. Scotland penalty narrowed the league to six and the

:13:26.:13:29.

final ten minutes were as intense as the first. Farrell penalised here.

:13:30.:13:35.

Tempers kept in check, just about. Where it mattered most, England held

:13:36.:13:39.

on. Virtually a new team, doing new things. I was really pleased with

:13:40.:13:44.

our application the second half. Good individual performances.

:13:45.:13:48.

Scotland's great frustration, another match here at Murrayfield

:13:49.:13:52.

against England, in which they failed to score a try. Plus the

:13:53.:13:56.

great satisfaction for the England players as they do their lap of

:13:57.:14:00.

honour, well, that they caused that Scottish frustration. Improvements

:14:01.:14:03.

to be made for both teams, it's easier to build on a narrow victory

:14:04.:14:09.

than a narrow defeat. Joe Wilson, BBC News, at Murrayfield.

:14:10.:14:12.

And in the Women's Six Nations, defending champions Ireland beat

:14:13.:14:15.

There was a top-of-the-table meeting in the Premier League,

:14:16.:14:20.

but it's time to pop out of the room if you don't want to know today's

:14:21.:14:24.

results, as Match of the Day - or Sportscene in Scotland -

:14:25.:14:27.

The Leicester City manager, Claudio Ranieri, is still dismissing

:14:28.:14:31.

suggestions they are title favourites, despite their five-point

:14:32.:14:33.

lead in the league, after a 3-1 win over Manchester City.

:14:34.:14:36.

After the game, the league's top goal scorer, Jamie Vardy,

:14:37.:14:41.

A section of Liverpool's supporters left Anfield in the 77th

:14:42.:14:46.

minute of their game against Sunderland in protest

:14:47.:14:48.

at a top-priced ticket being raised to ?77 in their new main stand

:14:49.:14:51.

Liverpool were 2-0 ahead at the time but drew

:14:52.:14:54.

Tottenham are up to second place after a 1-0 win over Watford.

:14:55.:14:59.

While Norwich drop into the relegation zone,

:15:00.:15:01.

after a 2-0 defeat to bottom club Aston Villa.

:15:02.:15:04.

There were wins today for Everton, Newcastle and Southampton.

:15:05.:15:09.

Aberdeen are level on points with Scottish Premiership leaders,

:15:10.:15:11.

Celtic, after a 4-3 victory over Saint Johnstone today.

:15:12.:15:15.

While in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup,

:15:16.:15:18.

Rangers have forced Premiership side, Kilmarnock to a replay.

:15:19.:15:21.

There were wins for Morton, Dundee United, Inverness Caledonian

:15:22.:15:24.

England's cricketers beat South Africa by five wickets today

:15:25.:15:30.

in the second match of the One Day International Series.

:15:31.:15:33.

South Africa set England 263 to win, and Alex Hales was edging

:15:34.:15:37.

towards his century when he was out for 99.

:15:38.:15:41.

Joss Buttler saw England over the line, hitting three successive

:15:42.:15:44.

sixes to help England to victory with three overs to spare.

:15:45.:15:47.

They now have a 2-0 lead in the series.

:15:48.:15:51.

Great Britain have lost their Group One play-off

:15:52.:15:55.

Heather Watson and Katie Swan were defeated in their singles

:15:56.:15:59.
