The French air accident investigation agency has confirmed | :00:20. | :00:23.
reports that smoke was detected on the Egyptian plane | :00:24. | :00:26.
which crashed into the Eastern Mediterranean on Thursday. | :00:27. | :00:30.
The industry website Aviation Herald has published data indicating that | :00:31. | :00:33.
a cockpit window was opened, and there was smoke in a toilet | :00:34. | :00:36.
Our correspondent Richard Lister reports. | :00:37. | :00:43.
The first images of debris from EgyptAir Flight 804. | :00:44. | :00:45.
Somewhere deep under these waters lies the rest of the plane, | :00:46. | :00:53.
and the bodies of its 66 passengers and crew. | :00:54. | :00:58.
Investigators hope the wreckage will also contain answers, what | :00:59. | :01:00.
What is known is how the journey began. | :01:01. | :01:06.
The aircraft took off from Paris on Wednesday evening and for more | :01:07. | :01:13.
than 2.5 hours, everything seemed fine. | :01:14. | :01:15.
The pilot chatted to Greek air traffic controllers. | :01:16. | :01:17.
But when they tried calling him again 40 minutes later, | :01:18. | :01:20.
The signal is lost and the plane swerves sharply. | :01:21. | :01:23.
90 degrees left, then a complete circle to the right, before dropping | :01:24. | :01:26.
More details are emerging about those final minutes. | :01:27. | :01:32.
The jet's in-flight systems sent a string of error messages | :01:33. | :01:34.
The first are warnings about a cockpit window, | :01:35. | :01:43.
but then smoke is detected in a toilet and in a bay full | :01:44. | :01:46.
They are amongst the last to be transmitted. | :01:47. | :01:49.
Of the seven messages that were sent, two of them | :01:50. | :01:51.
were about the flight control computer system, two of them | :01:52. | :01:54.
about a possible fire, three of them to do with window sensors. | :01:55. | :01:57.
And you can construct all kinds of scenarios that | :01:58. | :01:59.
But at the moment, like so much around MS804, | :02:00. | :02:04.
Slowly, faces are being put to the names of those lost. | :02:05. | :02:11.
The pilots and half the passengers were Egyptian. | :02:12. | :02:14.
Among the others, 15 French people, two Canadians, others from Algeria | :02:15. | :02:16.
What no-one yet knows is why they died. | :02:17. | :02:23.
Until the plane's voice and data recorders are covered, | :02:24. | :02:26.
that question is likely to remain unanswered. | :02:27. | :02:28.
Let's speak to our correspondent in Paris, Jonathan Blake. | :02:29. | :02:39.
Confirmation there was smoke but still no clues as to what the cause | :02:40. | :02:42.
might be? No, that is right. This is the most | :02:43. | :03:03.
significant information we have had so far, confirmation from the | :03:04. | :03:05.
in-flight systems that smoke was detected in several parts of the | :03:06. | :03:07.
aircraft. It would suggest a fire but we don't know if it was started | :03:08. | :03:10.
deliberately or by technical failure on board. The wait goes on for the | :03:11. | :03:12.
relatives of the passengers of flight MS804, about 100 or so. | :03:13. | :03:14.
Relatives of the 15 French people who were on board met a couple of | :03:15. | :03:17.
hours ago with the French foreign minister here in Paris who described | :03:18. | :03:20.
it as an intense meeting and expressed his sympathy for those | :03:21. | :03:24.
people, promising any information he could soon as he was able to. | :03:25. | :03:27.
Meanwhile pictures have been published as you saw there from the | :03:28. | :03:30.
Egyptian defence Ministry. They clearly show parts of the plane all | :03:31. | :03:35.
but destroyed, whether that happened midair or on impact with the ocean | :03:36. | :03:39.
we don't know. Until the black box recorders are discovered, we won't | :03:40. | :03:42.
know exactly what happened to the flight and what caused it to crash | :03:43. | :03:44.
Jonathan, thank you very much. A woman has appeared in court | :03:45. | :03:48.
after 11 children were bitten by a dog in a public | :03:49. | :03:50.
playground in Northumberland. Nine children were treated | :03:51. | :03:52.
in hospital after the attack Clare Neale, who's 37 | :03:53. | :03:55.
and from Blyth, pleaded not guilty to a charge of being the owner | :03:56. | :03:58.
of a dog dangerously out of control. She was remanded in custody | :03:59. | :04:02.
and is due to appear in court again Councils would be given the power | :04:03. | :04:05.
to limit "skyrocketing" rent increases under | :04:06. | :04:08.
new proposals from Labour. Shadow Chancellor John | :04:09. | :04:10.
McDonnell says he'll urge councils to offer cheap, | :04:11. | :04:11.
local authority-backed mortgages. Our political correspondent | :04:12. | :04:16.
Chris Mason is with me. Housing is a big issue throughout | :04:17. | :04:24.
the country. A massive issue and one Labour will | :04:25. | :04:28.
attempt to grapple with. What is happening today, after no end of | :04:29. | :04:32.
stories about Labour's future, suggestions Jeremy Corbyn might not | :04:33. | :04:36.
last until week on Thursday, that sort of thing, what they are doing | :04:37. | :04:39.
effected the process of their economic policy. Not a huge amount | :04:40. | :04:43.
of detail, big on vision, short on detail, not a big surprise given the | :04:44. | :04:48.
general election will not be until 2020. John McDonnell trying to take | :04:49. | :04:54.
on the idea that Labour are only any good at grumbling. You know as well | :04:55. | :04:58.
as I do that it is no good just to protest. If we want to make a | :04:59. | :05:04.
lasting change to people's lives, we have to do more than protesting. | :05:05. | :05:08.
Labour is a party of Government. He says he wants to set about the | :05:09. | :05:12.
fundamental process of reforming capitalism. He says Labour would | :05:13. | :05:17.
have 100,000 new council houses a year and what he calls socialism | :05:18. | :05:21.
from below, companies managed by their workers. Two big challenges, | :05:22. | :05:25.
would his MPs put up with the leadership longer enough for them to | :05:26. | :05:29.
implement this, and crucially would the electorate by such a left-wing | :05:30. | :05:32.
socialist idea? Chris, thanks very much. | :05:33. | :05:35.
The finals of the FA Cup and the Scottish Cup | :05:36. | :05:37.
Rangers take on Hibernian at Hampden Park. | :05:38. | :05:39.
At Wembley, one of the most successful clubs in British | :05:40. | :05:42.
football, Manchester United, take on Crystal Palace, | :05:43. | :05:44.
a side that's never won a major trophy. | :05:45. | :05:46.
Let's speak to Olly Foster, who's at Wembley. | :05:47. | :05:49.
A huge day, I suspect especially for Crystal Palace fans? | :05:50. | :05:57.
Isn't it just? 26 years ago, that was a great day in the history of | :05:58. | :06:02.
Palace. Yes, they lost against Manchester United but it was one of | :06:03. | :06:08.
the most wonderful finals, 3-3, United won the replay 1-40 and it | :06:09. | :06:11.
possibly saved Sir Alex Ferguson's job. He went on to win 38 major | :06:12. | :06:17.
trophies with United. Louis van Gaal will be hoping for similar job | :06:18. | :06:21.
security should they come up trumps against Palace. In Scotland, it is | :06:22. | :06:26.
the 131st Scottish cup final. History has | :06:27. | :06:40.
already been made there, the first time it will be contested between | :06:41. | :06:43.
two sites from outside the top division. Rangers looking for their | :06:44. | :06:46.
34th trophy, Hibs have not won it in over 100 years. Coverage of both | :06:47. | :06:47.
finals across the BBC. After a short delay because of heavy | :06:48. | :06:49.
overnight rain at Headingly, England's cricketers are underway | :06:50. | :06:52.
on day three of the first Test against Sri Lanka, | :06:53. | :06:54.
with the tourists still struggling Sri Lanka have already lost two men | :06:55. | :06:56.
in their second innings. A short time ago they were 35-2, | :06:57. | :07:00.
leaving England still You can see more on all of today's | :07:01. | :07:03.
stories on the BBC News Channel. Good afternoon. It was a mild start | :07:04. | :07:24.
of the day, double figures across across-the-board, south-westerly | :07:25. | :07:26.
breeze, a lot of cloud and rain to thank for that. Rain is gathering | :07:27. | :07:33.
along the south coast, it will be moving inland in | :07:34. | :07:35. |
