America suffers its worst mass shooting. | :00:07. | :00:13.
GUNFIRE. Oh, my God. They are all shooting back and forth. | :00:14. | :00:19.
He's been identified as Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old US citizen. | :00:20. | :00:30.
This was an act of terror and an act of hate, and as Americans we are | :00:31. | :00:37.
united in grief and outrage and in resolve to defend our people. | :00:38. | :00:41.
In other news, David Cameron's latest warning on the risks | :00:42. | :00:43.
of leaving the EU - the value of our pensions | :00:44. | :00:46.
And the sun shines for the Queen after rain puts a damper | :00:47. | :00:50.
on the hampers at a street party on the Mall. | :00:51. | :01:11.
At least 50 people have been killed and dozens injured in a nightclub | :01:12. | :01:17.
in Florida in the deadliest mass shooting in US history. | :01:18. | :01:20.
A man armed with an assault rifle opened fire at a gay club | :01:21. | :01:22.
in Orlando and took hostages before being shot dead. | :01:23. | :01:25.
He's been named as Omar Mateen, and reportedly pledged allegiance | :01:26. | :01:28.
to so-called Islamic State after the attack began. | :01:29. | :01:32.
Our Washington correspondent Laura Bicker has the latest. | :01:33. | :01:35.
The shocking sound of rapid gunfire echoed through the Orlando streets. | :01:36. | :01:42.
Recorded by witnesses, who feared the worst. | :01:43. | :01:46.
Dozens managed to flee the popular gay nightclub, but still worried | :01:47. | :01:53.
We were hearing the bullets just go constantly. | :01:54. | :02:02.
All you can do is think of right now yourself, and then help others, | :02:03. | :02:05.
When I knew I was safe, but the guns were still going | :02:06. | :02:10.
and the police were like, go, go, go! | :02:11. | :02:12.
I had no choice but to help the people that were shot. | :02:13. | :02:15.
One mother got a text from her son pleading for help as | :02:16. | :02:18.
He told her he loved her and feared he would die. | :02:19. | :02:23.
Others were distraught, just desperate for news. | :02:24. | :02:25.
I don't know where my son is, no one can tell me where my son is. | :02:26. | :02:30.
If he has been shot, if he's dead, no one knows. | :02:31. | :02:33.
But they told me there are fatalities. | :02:34. | :02:39.
As police responded, the attacker held hostages for three hours. | :02:40. | :02:43.
Police say he had an assault rifle, a handgun and some sort | :02:44. | :02:46.
Special SWAT teams rescued 30 people, but inside, they found | :02:47. | :02:53.
Just to look into the eyes of our officers, that | :02:54. | :02:59.
You could tell that they were all shaken by what they | :03:00. | :03:05.
They did an unbelievable job, courageous efforts, rescuing | :03:06. | :03:10.
This is now being investigated as an act of terror. | :03:11. | :03:18.
The suspect has been identified as Omar Mateen, | :03:19. | :03:26.
the FBI says it's trying to establish if he had | :03:27. | :03:28.
Although it is early in the investigation, we know enough to say | :03:29. | :03:39.
that this was an act of terror and an active hate. As Americans, we are | :03:40. | :03:45.
united in grief and outrage and resolve to defend our people. This | :03:46. | :03:52.
is the deadliest shooting in America's history, at a place young | :03:53. | :04:01.
people counterparty. -- came to party. | :04:02. | :04:05.
A state of urgency has now been declared in Orlando, | :04:06. | :04:08.
and as the investigation continues, the police are urging calm | :04:09. | :04:10.
until they know more and are clear about a motive. | :04:11. | :04:12.
And we can speak to Rajini Vaidyanathan in Orlando now. | :04:13. | :04:16.
What more do we know about the suspect? | :04:17. | :04:17.
Omar Mateen was, as we understand, in his late 20s, and was from a | :04:18. | :04:24.
place called Port Saint Lucy, about a two-hour drive from here in | :04:25. | :04:30.
Orlando. One congressman said his family were from Afghanistan and he | :04:31. | :04:34.
was trained in the use of weapons, although that has not been confirmed | :04:35. | :04:38.
by the FBI. There are other reports that we are just getting in that | :04:39. | :04:41.
after the shooting began, Omar Mateen called 911, the emergency | :04:42. | :04:47.
number here, to pledge allegiance to Islamic State. As people called for | :04:48. | :04:52.
calm after this devastating attack, we have heard from Donald Trump, the | :04:53. | :04:57.
presumptive Republican nominee for president, who said that this all | :04:58. | :05:01.
proves that he was right about Islamic terrorism. Some people say | :05:02. | :05:06.
that Mr Trump is just stoking fear and playing politics at a tense time | :05:07. | :05:11.
in America. Others say that he has a point and that more needs to be done | :05:12. | :05:14.
to contain the terror threat on home soil. But while the politics is also | :05:15. | :05:20.
something people are talking about, right now here in Orlando, people | :05:21. | :05:23.
are just focusing on the fact that 50 people lost their lives, and many | :05:24. | :05:27.
victims still haven't been identified. And this attack, the | :05:28. | :05:32.
worst mass shooting in American history, happened during Gay pride | :05:33. | :05:36.
month. Now people here are in mourning. Thank you. | :05:37. | :05:41.
David Cameron has warned that spending on pensions, | :05:42. | :05:43.
the NHS and defence might not be protected from cuts in the longer | :05:44. | :05:46.
term if the UK leaves the European Union. | :05:47. | :05:48.
Vote Leave have called it a "baseless threat", | :05:49. | :05:50.
but the Prime Minister said he had a duty to spell out the risks, | :05:51. | :05:53.
as our political correspondent Alex Forsyth reports. | :05:54. | :05:58.
From the cost of a flight to the price of buying food, | :05:59. | :06:02.
the impact on jobs and wages and the effect on immigration. | :06:03. | :06:04.
In this campaign, no issue is out of bounds. | :06:05. | :06:06.
Today, the Prime Minister opened up a new front, warning again that | :06:07. | :06:09.
leaving could damage the economy, but adding that could affect public | :06:10. | :06:12.
He quoted economists who predict Brexit will hit public finances. | :06:13. | :06:23.
They say there will be something like a ?20-40bn black hole. | :06:24. | :06:26.
Of course, you could meet that by putting up taxes on ordinary | :06:27. | :06:28.
hard-working people, or by going back to borrowing more | :06:29. | :06:31.
Or it could be cuts, cuts in things like pensions | :06:32. | :06:38.
or health or others, and my point is, we don't | :06:39. | :06:41.
At the moment, the state pension is protected | :06:42. | :06:45.
by what is called a triple lock, which means it always | :06:46. | :06:48.
rises with earnings, inflation or by 2.5%, | :06:49. | :06:50.
And pensioner benefits like free bus passes are protected. | :06:51. | :06:58.
But the Prime Minister claims in the next parliament that | :06:59. | :07:01.
NEWSREEL: If you are as old as him, you will have found a big increase | :07:02. | :07:08.
Pensioners have long been key voters, particularly | :07:09. | :07:11.
for Conservatives, and some Tories who want to leave the EU say | :07:12. | :07:13.
the fact they are being targeted is a sign of desperation | :07:14. | :07:16.
from a failing Remain campaign making baseless claims. | :07:17. | :07:20.
We have had months of months of regular levels of fear, and now | :07:21. | :07:25.
But what I don't understand with this is effectively | :07:26. | :07:29.
the Prime Minister is undermining our own manifesto | :07:30. | :07:31.
Today, the Ukip leader suggested any short-term economic shock | :07:32. | :07:36.
from leaving would be outweighed by long-term benefits. | :07:37. | :07:40.
Even if sterling were to fall a few percentage points | :07:41. | :07:42.
The point is we have a floating currency, and it will | :07:43. | :07:47.
But even those who believe claims on both sides have been exaggerated | :07:48. | :07:53.
are keen to stress the economic risk of a Brexit, hammering home | :07:54. | :07:56.
There is a real risk in terms of employment overall. | :07:57. | :08:01.
I think there is a risk to the pound in the short term, and that | :08:02. | :08:07.
will have consequences, no doubt about it. | :08:08. | :08:09.
The economic argument is so key to those who want | :08:10. | :08:12.
the UK to stay in the EU, they are throwing everything at it, | :08:13. | :08:15.
targeting individual groups on issues they think matter most. | :08:16. | :08:19.
It's a sign of just how high they know the stakes are. | :08:20. | :08:22.
The Justice Secretary Michael Gove, who is campaigning to leave the | :08:23. | :08:37.
European Union, says that the government is working towards Turkey | :08:38. | :08:41.
joining the U. With ten days to go before polling day, he talked to our | :08:42. | :08:45.
political editor Laura Kuenssberg in his family home in Aberdeen. | :08:46. | :08:50.
The personal is political. Growing up in the 70s, and Aberdeen | :08:51. | :08:58.
schoolboy saw his dad's fish merchant business go to the wall. | :08:59. | :09:02.
Now he is the Lord Chancellor, and Ernie and Christine Gove are long | :09:03. | :09:06.
retired. The family blamed the EU then, and they blame it now. It just | :09:07. | :09:16.
went downhill. I saw the pride that my father and grandfather had in | :09:17. | :09:19.
their business, and obviously it was very difficult to cope with seeing | :09:20. | :09:22.
everything they had built to disappear. I was just a schoolboy, | :09:23. | :09:27.
at the time I didn't know what I was going to be doing in the future, but | :09:28. | :09:30.
it stayed with me, and I remember when I was at university in the | :09:31. | :09:36.
1980s, when there were debates about Europe, I remember feeling that some | :09:37. | :09:40.
of the debates were not rooted in real people's experience. There was | :09:41. | :09:45.
a lot of airy fairy series. But votes are about the future, and as | :09:46. | :09:49.
we talk this afternoon, ten days away from the vote, you can't tell | :09:50. | :09:54.
voters how our economy would work. You can't tell voters how we could | :09:55. | :09:58.
continue to trade with the rest of the EU. You can't guarantee | :09:59. | :10:02.
anything. All I want for the people of the United Kingdom is what people | :10:03. | :10:06.
in Australia and Canada have, which is the chance to take back control | :10:07. | :10:09.
of their own future. So in that sense, I am not suggesting that | :10:10. | :10:14.
Britain boldly goes where no man has gone before. I'm suggesting that | :10:15. | :10:17.
Britain becomes an independent software of running country. Taking | :10:18. | :10:21.
on his friends in the Cabinet in the fight of their lives, he believes a | :10:22. | :10:25.
leaked memo shows Turkey is on its way into the EU, despite what his | :10:26. | :10:30.
colleagues say. I understand why there are some people who say that | :10:31. | :10:33.
Turkey will not join the European Union any time soon, but the | :10:34. | :10:37.
evidence is that the British government and the European Union | :10:38. | :10:41.
are actively working towards Turkey joining the European Union, and | :10:42. | :10:44.
Turkish citizens being able to travel throughout the EU. On home | :10:45. | :10:51.
turf, fishing quotas mean that many trawlermen have had dislike of | :10:52. | :10:56.
Brussels as well as the CNA blood. When I bought this ship, I was a big | :10:57. | :11:01.
player, but now we are small. This decision is bigger than one | :11:02. | :11:08.
politician, one industry. The people of this country have decided to use | :11:09. | :11:10.
this debate as a and opportunities say that the submit assumptions the | :11:11. | :11:17.
political establishment have had are wrong, and they are going to send a | :11:18. | :11:20.
clear instruction to the establishment that they want a | :11:21. | :11:22.
different course, a change in direction. Sounds suspiciously like | :11:23. | :11:27.
a prediction the country will vote to leave. Both sides have ten days | :11:28. | :11:31.
to persuade you. You have ten days left to decide. Laura Kuenssberg, | :11:32. | :11:34.
BBC News, Peterhead. And we'll have a profile of a senior | :11:35. | :11:37.
member of the Remain European football's governing body | :11:38. | :11:40.
has warned the England and Russian teams that they could be expelled | :11:41. | :11:43.
from Euro 2016 if their fans repeat the violence which marred the end | :11:44. | :11:47.
of last night's match. Let's speak to our sports editor | :11:48. | :11:49.
Dan Roan in Chantilly this evening. How's this going down | :11:50. | :11:52.
with the England team? They will be very concerned. In the | :11:53. | :12:03.
last hour, the FA have issued a statement saying they will treat | :12:04. | :12:09.
this Uefa threat Woody Austin most -- this Uefa threat with the utmost | :12:10. | :12:13.
seriousness, and while they might, it would be unprecedented for any | :12:14. | :12:17.
team to be kicked out of the European Championships. The England | :12:18. | :12:24.
team are behind me here in this hotel in Chantilly, but they do so | :12:25. | :12:27.
now with the threat of expulsion hanging over their heads. Uefa | :12:28. | :12:31.
issued a statement say they were disgusted by the scenes over the | :12:32. | :12:36.
last few days in Marseille, running battles with the police, clashes | :12:37. | :12:42.
between rival sets of supporters, Russian fans behaving dreadfully | :12:43. | :12:45.
inside the stadium last night, for which they now face separate | :12:46. | :12:49.
disciplinary and by Uefa, and the next headache for the authorities | :12:50. | :12:51.
comes later this week when England play Wales just down the road. The | :12:52. | :12:58.
previous day, Russian fans will be gathering to play another game | :12:59. | :13:01.
against Slovakia, and that potentially is another flash point | :13:02. | :13:03.
for the organisers to deal with. Down, many thanks. | :13:04. | :13:07.
Northern Ireland began their Euro 2016 campaign this afternoon. | :13:08. | :13:09.
Their opening group match against Poland. | :13:10. | :13:13.
It ended in defeat. The only goal was this second-half strike, | :13:14. | :13:21.
Northern Ireland had few chances and must now regroup for their next | :13:22. | :13:22.
match against Ukraine on Thursday. The Queen has said she's | :13:23. | :13:27.
delighted by the support and encouragement from well-wishers | :13:28. | :13:30.
after three days of celebrations Speaking to thousands | :13:31. | :13:32.
of people in the Mall, how she'd be feeling | :13:33. | :13:37.
if people were still singing Our royal correspondent | :13:38. | :13:41.
Nicholas Witchell reports. When the mallard ducks | :13:42. | :13:48.
from St James' Park look at home among the puddles on the mall, | :13:49. | :13:58.
a local resident may well have gazed out and wondered if the British | :13:59. | :14:01.
weather was going to spoil For hours, as the 10,000 guests | :14:02. | :14:04.
arrived, it very nearly did. By the time the festivities | :14:05. | :14:07.
were launched by the band of the Royal Marines, | :14:08. | :14:13.
the rain was easy off. And by the time the Queen | :14:14. | :14:19.
and the Duke of Edinburgh appeared, it had stopped, and the principal | :14:20. | :14:22.
guests were clearly in the mood The Royal chauffeur received | :14:23. | :14:25.
an unmistakable royal command, And so, in double-quick time, | :14:26. | :14:32.
the Queen found herself on the podium listening to a tribute | :14:33. | :14:38.
from her grandson William. I hope you won't mind if I say | :14:39. | :14:43.
a personal thank you to the Queen, and to do so on behalf | :14:44. | :14:48.
of all her grandchildren Granny, thank you for everything | :14:49. | :14:51.
you have done for your family. We could not wish you a happy | :14:52. | :14:54.
birthday. And then, from the Queen | :14:55. | :14:58.
herself, this. To everyone here today, | :14:59. | :15:02.
and to those holding street parties elsewhere, | :15:03. | :15:05.
I would like to say thank you for the wonderful support | :15:06. | :15:09.
and encouragement that you continue How I will feel if people | :15:10. | :15:12.
are still singing happy birthday in December remains to | :15:13. | :15:22.
be seen! There was a parade with | :15:23. | :15:26.
reminders from her reign. This was a model of the Royal yacht | :15:27. | :15:37.
Britannia. But above all, a day which had begun | :15:38. | :15:39.
under grey skies which finished in sunshine had one overwhelming | :15:40. | :15:42.
message of gratitude. Nicholas Witchell, BBC News, | :15:43. | :15:44.
at Buckingham Palace. There's more throughout the evening | :15:45. | :15:47.
on the BBC News Channel. | :15:48. | :15:48. |
