Another major shooting in the United States.

:00:00.:00:08.

Three police officers have been killed in Louisiana.

:00:09.:00:16.

Reports suggest they died in a targeted shooting in Baton Rouge -

:00:17.:00:21.

where tension has been high since an African American man

:00:22.:00:23.

was killed by white police two weeks ago.

:00:24.:00:25.

We do have some that have been killed.

:00:26.:00:30.

That's what I know for sure right now.

:00:31.:00:33.

Turkey's President vows to remove what he calls the "virus" behind

:00:34.:00:41.

Friday's failed military coup - 6,000 people have been detained.

:00:42.:00:46.

More details emerge about the man who murdered 84 people in Nice -

:00:47.:00:48.

as services are held to remember those who died.

:00:49.:00:53.

And Owen Smith officially launches his campaign

:00:54.:00:54.

A major police operation is underway in the US state of Lousiana tonight,

:00:55.:01:22.

after three police officers were killed, and three injured,

:01:23.:01:25.

in what's believed to have been a targeted shooting.

:01:26.:01:28.

The police say one suspect has been killed, but they believe two others

:01:29.:01:32.

The attack happened less than a mile from police headquarters

:01:33.:01:39.

The city has been tense since the killing of an African American

:01:40.:01:44.

man by white police officers earlier this month.

:01:45.:01:47.

Our North America Editor, Jon Sopel, has this report.

:01:48.:01:51.

Sunday morning in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and the piece

:01:52.:01:56.

Multiple shots ring out as gunmen or a gunman

:01:57.:02:10.

Very quickly it's confirmed that three officers are dead,

:02:11.:02:13.

All we know at this particular time if there was a shooting with

:02:14.:02:23.

multiple suspects. One suspect was seized. Officers were shot and some

:02:24.:02:28.

have been killed. That is what I know for sure right now will stop we

:02:29.:02:34.

are securing the area with the deceased suspect, making sure there

:02:35.:02:35.

are no explosive in the area. A massive operation is under way

:02:36.:02:39.

to find those responsible and America is convulsed again

:02:40.:02:41.

by another mass shooting police again the target and race

:02:42.:02:43.

apparently the spark. Tensions have been high

:02:44.:02:48.

in Baton Rouge since the death of Alton Sterling, the 37-year-old

:02:49.:02:51.

African-American was shot dead at point blank range,

:02:52.:02:58.

even though it appeared police had him pinned down

:02:59.:03:00.

and was posing no threat. The shooting and the killing

:03:01.:03:04.

of another African-American by police sparked mostly peaceful

:03:05.:03:06.

protests across America, organised In Dallas, a gunman,

:03:07.:03:08.

Micah Johnson, opened fire, deliberately picking off

:03:09.:03:18.

white police officers. Security is at its tightest in

:03:19.:03:30.

Cleveland where the Republican convention opens tomorrow and

:03:31.:03:35.

protesters have promised to try to disrupt proceedings. America is on

:03:36.:03:36.

edge. We can join Jon, who's in Ohio

:03:37.:03:41.

ahead of this week's Republican Party convention,

:03:42.:03:44.

which beings tomorrow. What more can you tell us about

:03:45.:03:49.

another very difficult episode in America? Jane, there is shock,

:03:50.:03:55.

disquiet and a fair bit of tension as well. It seems that a cocktail of

:03:56.:04:02.

race, distrust of the police and the ready availability of guns has

:04:03.:04:07.

proved lethal once again. All of this in a toxic, political

:04:08.:04:10.

environment with protesters promising to converted to try to

:04:11.:04:15.

disrupt proceedings and Donald Trump claiming the Republicans are now the

:04:16.:04:19.

party of law and order. He has just tweeted, how many law enforcement

:04:20.:04:22.

and people have to die because of a lack of leadership in our country?

:04:23.:04:30.

Barack Obama would say, you are exaggerating the extent to which the

:04:31.:04:32.

country is divided. There is a profound worry this is a critical

:04:33.:04:37.

moment for America, that it could be sliding into a type of civil unrest

:04:38.:04:43.

not seen here for half a century. Thank you.

:04:44.:04:45.

Security forces in Turkey are continuing to round up people

:04:46.:04:48.

suspected of being involved in the failed military coup.

:04:49.:04:50.

About 6,000 military personnel, judges and other officials

:04:51.:04:53.

And funerals have been taking place for some of the 290 people

:04:54.:04:58.

The country's President has vowed to remove what he called the 'virus'

:04:59.:05:04.

This man was 33 foot as the soldiers attempted their coup, he was shot

:05:05.:05:25.

dead. Today his mother 's bid farewell. Why did they kill my son,

:05:26.:05:30.

she cries? You will go to heaven when you are an angel. Morning is

:05:31.:05:36.

very public here. Funerals for the many victims from Friday night were

:05:37.:05:43.

joined by the president. He again blamed an Islamic preacher and his

:05:44.:05:46.

followers for the mutiny, saying they were infecting the state. We

:05:47.:05:52.

will continue to cleanse this virus from all our state institutions

:05:53.:05:56.

because it has spread. Unfortunately, like a cancer, it has

:05:57.:06:02.

enveloped the States. We want the death penalty, the crowd chanted.

:06:03.:06:07.

The President replied, in democracy you cannot ignore the people's will.

:06:08.:06:13.

These are ominous times. Grief and politics are mixing. The lives lost

:06:14.:06:17.

held up by the Goodman as symbols of democracy and these themes will

:06:18.:06:22.

rally much of the population behind it. -- scenes. It has been an

:06:38.:06:42.

talks of defending cover to lead to Turkey from enemies he will emerge

:06:43.:06:46.

stronger. There is little support for the coup. It is very inspiring,

:06:47.:06:51.

a great feeling that people can stand up to. Standing against the

:06:52.:06:57.

bullets, it is a very great moment in our history. 6000 people have

:06:58.:07:03.

been detained. Today warning from the Government not to use this to

:07:04.:07:09.

clamp down even more. There cannot be purges. The state must be able to

:07:10.:07:13.

function. Those who tried to buy a late Turkish democracy must be

:07:14.:07:16.

pursued within the framework of the rule of law. This is a shaken,

:07:17.:07:23.

divided nation. The Government seizing the moment to tighten

:07:24.:07:27.

control. The vital Western ally is at a dangerous moment.

:07:28.:07:30.

French police have arrested two more people in connection

:07:31.:07:33.

with Thursday's attack in Nice, in which 84 people were killed.

:07:34.:07:35.

A man and a woman were detained today, bringing the total

:07:36.:07:38.

It comes as more details emerge about the man

:07:39.:07:45.

who carried out the attack - as Lucy Williamson

:07:46.:07:47.

Nice is now a city of memorials, rituals to steady

:07:48.:07:52.

At the Russian Orthodox Church today, they came together

:07:53.:07:58.

Two Russian victims remembered among the dead.

:07:59.:08:06.

Their attacker emerging as a violent loner, who liked to drink,

:08:07.:08:11.

who, last Thursday night reportedly sent a text message

:08:12.:08:18.

to his brother in Tunisia - a selfie from the promenade,

:08:19.:08:21.

laughing among the crowds he was about to attack.

:08:22.:08:31.

Along the famous seafront, there are new places of pilgrimage now.

:08:32.:08:40.

The city's casinos offer a petty kind of gamble

:08:41.:08:42.

against what everyone remembered here has lost.

:08:43.:08:44.

There's a lot of anger among the tributes here.

:08:45.:08:46.

A lot of intolerance, a lot of fear.

:08:47.:08:48.

France has been the victim too many times now and it is starting

:08:49.:08:51.

to divide over who to blame and how to respond.

:08:52.:08:53.

Nice's Deputy Mayor says he has asked for years for more police

:08:54.:09:01.

after three major attacks, he says, many in France

:09:02.:09:04.

After each terror attack, we have a speech of compassion.

:09:05.:09:08.

After that, the Government is saying, we are going to take

:09:09.:09:14.

France's government has described this as a new kind of attack.

:09:15.:09:32.

The motive unclear, the attacker unnoticed.

:09:33.:09:36.

The victims targeted simply for being in France.

:09:37.:09:40.

Owen Smith has formally launched his campaign to be

:09:41.:09:51.

He joins Angela Eagle in the race to unseat Jeremy Corbyn.

:09:52.:09:56.

The former Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary described

:09:57.:09:58.

himself as the unity candidate - but critics say his intervention

:09:59.:10:03.

could split the anti-Corbyn vote among members.

:10:04.:10:07.

Our Political Correspondent Ben Wright has more.

:10:08.:10:11.

You might not have heard of him but this Labour MP is on a mission,

:10:12.:10:16.

to become his party's new leader and topple Jeremy Corbyn.

:10:17.:10:20.

Great to be anti-austerity, great to have that slogan.

:10:21.:10:27.

What is it we are going to do to try to change things

:10:28.:10:30.

Launching his leadership bid, Owen Smith said Labour had to be

:10:31.:10:34.

credible and warned it was now standing on the brink.

:10:35.:10:36.

There is a clear and present danger that some in our party are getting

:10:37.:10:41.

fatalistic about the prospect of that split.

:10:42.:10:44.

It cannot happen, it will not happen.

:10:45.:10:46.

If I have anything to do with it, never on my watch

:10:47.:10:50.

There's even a contest to be the Jeremy Corbyn challenger.

:10:51.:10:56.

Angela Eagle wants to take him on too.

:10:57.:10:59.

This morning, the rivals politely slugged it out on the sofa.

:11:00.:11:03.

My view is, whoever is the person who commands the largest degree

:11:04.:11:08.

of support in the PLP is the Unity candidate and that is the person

:11:09.:11:11.

who should go forward and take Jeremy on.

:11:12.:11:13.

I think we should have the person who is most likely to beat Jeremy

:11:14.:11:17.

While they fret about Labour's future, Jeremy Corbyn

:11:18.:11:21.

was at a festival commemorating workers' struggles of the past.

:11:22.:11:25.

I am very happy we are having this debate, this

:11:26.:11:27.

I'm sure at the end of it, this party will emerge stronger

:11:28.:11:32.

from it and I hope will be united at the end of it.

:11:33.:11:37.

Mr Corbyn does not need nominations from Labour MPs to stand

:11:38.:11:44.

and is banking on Labour's foot soldiers to re-elect him.

:11:45.:11:48.

The two challenging candidates will take part in a hustings

:11:49.:11:51.

for Labour MPs here tomorrow and then nominations will open.

:11:52.:11:55.

The vast majority of Labour MPs agree they don't want Jeremy Corbyn

:11:56.:11:58.

Now they have to decide who has the best chance of

:11:59.:12:03.

beating him in a vote for the membership.

:12:04.:12:06.

This is no ordinary leadership contest, this is a bitter fight

:12:07.:12:09.

The rest of the disused Didcot power station in Oxfordshire

:12:10.:12:19.

has been demolished, five months after part

:12:20.:12:21.

Remotely operated robots were used to attach explosives

:12:22.:12:29.

to the structure, as it had been too unstable to approach.

:12:30.:12:33.

Efforts to find the three unrecovered bodies have now resumed.

:12:34.:12:50.

In golf, Sweden's Henrik Stenson has won

:12:51.:12:51.

the Open Championship at Royal Troon.

:12:52.:13:00.

He finished three shots ahead of Mickelson after

:13:01.:13:02.

Waiting to be claimed back by whom? The Open was anything but. Stenson

:13:03.:13:13.

against Mickelson, the pair out on their own. After sharing a handshake

:13:14.:13:18.

they shared a quite exhilarating start, pushing each other to new

:13:19.:13:22.

heights. Mickelson edged ahead but Stenson roared back. Birdie followed

:13:23.:13:27.

birdie. At halfway, the Swede led by a shot. It was some jewel. The rest

:13:28.:13:33.

did their best, including the fancy new favourite, the one they call

:13:34.:13:42.

Beef. England's Andrew Johnston capping a championship to remember.

:13:43.:13:46.

By now, Mickelson and Stenson were in a different stratosphere. It was

:13:47.:13:50.

bought quite spellbinding quality. Mickelson drew level but with three

:13:51.:13:55.

holes left and the pressure mounting, Stenson can judge a moment

:13:56.:14:01.

of pure magic. That put him to macro shots clear. From there, after a day

:14:02.:14:06.

of utterly enthralling drama, Stenson held on for remarkable

:14:07.:14:12.

victory. There was a display of a lifetime, one of the Open's most

:14:13.:14:16.

enthralling contest has delivered a new champion. A quite incredible

:14:17.:14:24.

performance from Henrik Stenson. He finished on 20 under par, a new

:14:25.:14:31.

record for the Open Championship. He finished three clear of Phil

:14:32.:14:35.

Mickelson. It was one of the great sporting contests, a fantastic day

:14:36.:14:39.

for the fans but a fantastic day for Henrik Stenson. Thank you.

:14:40.:14:44.

In cricket, England have lost their first test of the summer series

:14:45.:14:50.

against Pakistan for that they needed 283 to win but were bowled

:14:51.:14:57.

out for 207. Mohammed Amir took the final wicket, giving the tourists

:14:58.:15:00.

victory on the fourth day at Lord's. One of Britain's most celebrated
