Sinn Fein are celebrating their best-ever showing in elections | :00:20. | :00:23.
With all the votes counted, they've won 27 seats, just one | :00:24. | :00:29.
behind the Democratic Unionist Party. | :00:30. | :00:32.
Sinn Fein's President, Gerry Adams, has described the result as "an end | :00:33. | :00:35.
The two parties now have three weeks to try to agree | :00:36. | :00:40.
The battle between unionism and nationalism has been | :00:41. | :00:49.
at the centre of politics in Northern Ireland for decades. | :00:50. | :00:53.
And the harsh words of old returned during this election campaign. | :00:54. | :00:57.
The DUP leader even compared Irish republicans to crocodiles. | :00:58. | :01:01.
If you feed a crocodile, they're going to keep coming back | :01:02. | :01:04.
The increase in support for Sinn Fein has left them just | :01:05. | :01:13.
a single seat behind the Democratic Unionist Party. | :01:14. | :01:16.
Until the start of this year, they worked in coalition | :01:17. | :01:18.
But now the animosity has returned, and that leaves major | :01:19. | :01:23.
questions about the future of power-sharing at Stormont. | :01:24. | :01:27.
It's time for political leadership, it's time to get back | :01:28. | :01:29.
to the principles of the Good Friday Agreement. | :01:30. | :01:31.
It's time to fix what's wrong, and I think that is all doable | :01:32. | :01:34.
if people come at it with the right attitude. | :01:35. | :01:36.
But after such a bitter break-up, getting unionists back together | :01:37. | :01:42.
with republicans won't be easy, and that's particularly true | :01:43. | :01:44.
because of one demand Sinn Fein is making of the DUP. | :01:45. | :01:47.
They want Arlene Foster to step aside as First Minister, | :01:48. | :01:50.
while a public enquiry takes place into a financial scandal linked | :01:51. | :01:53.
Last night the DUP leader left her count centre, having | :01:54. | :01:58.
A lot of what they are asking for is undeliverable, | :01:59. | :02:06.
because whilst they dress it up with nice platitudes | :02:07. | :02:08.
and nice language, actually it's incredibly one-sided. | :02:09. | :02:11.
It doesn't fit with the notion of partnership. | :02:12. | :02:15.
For so long the big beast of politics here, | :02:16. | :02:17.
unionism is facing a fresh roar from nationalism. | :02:18. | :02:22.
Just months ago, they seemed to be working together. | :02:23. | :02:29.
But in unionist East Belfast, where the CS Lewis Square has been | :02:30. | :02:32.
built in honour of the author's mythical tales of battle, | :02:33. | :02:34.
there is a certain concern about what is emerging. | :02:35. | :02:36.
Our whole government system is not working for the people who need it, | :02:37. | :02:41.
because they are up there squabbling over very little, to be honest. | :02:42. | :02:44.
We should get off our backsides and get out and vote, now. | :02:45. | :02:52.
Many see the current divisions as a return | :02:53. | :02:56.
to the politics of the past, and once again, a time | :02:57. | :02:58.
These were already politically turbulent times. Brexit poses | :02:59. | :03:10.
particular problems for Northern Ireland, which is the only part of | :03:11. | :03:14.
the UK with a land border with the EU. There's a lot of trade crossing | :03:15. | :03:20.
that border. This result has already had consequences. The Ulster | :03:21. | :03:22.
Unionist Party De has stepped down because of the poor result of his | :03:23. | :03:27.
party within these elections and beyond that the DUP reduction in | :03:28. | :03:30.
seats meant they have lost what is known as a petition of concern, a | :03:31. | :03:34.
veto to block any legislation they don't like. For example they used | :03:35. | :03:41.
that to stop the introduction of same-sex marriage. Looking towards | :03:42. | :03:43.
the future, the DUP and Sinn Fein have to try and pick up the pieces | :03:44. | :03:47.
to try and form a power-sharing government. That isn't going to be | :03:48. | :03:52.
easy and it does raise the prospect Westminster might have to take over | :03:53. | :03:55.
for a time and run government in Northern Ireland while they can try | :03:56. | :03:57.
to come to an agreement. The French car-maker which owns | :03:58. | :04:00.
Peugeot and Citroen has reportedly reached an agreement to buy | :04:01. | :04:03.
the Vauxhall and Opel brands The deal could raise | :04:04. | :04:05.
concerns about the future of Vauxhall's two UK factories, | :04:06. | :04:08.
which employ more than 4,000 people. An official announcement | :04:09. | :04:11.
is expected on Monday. Our business correspondent | :04:12. | :04:14.
Joe Lynam reports. This Vauxhall plant is one | :04:15. | :04:20.
of the more efficient carmaking 82% of the Astras made | :04:21. | :04:22.
here are exported, mostly to Europe. But the workers here may have | :04:23. | :04:26.
new bosses from Monday when it's likely that the company which makes | :04:27. | :04:29.
Peugeot cars, PSA, confirms that it But with too many factories | :04:30. | :04:33.
in Europe and not enough demand, PSA is likely to have a long, | :04:34. | :04:45.
hard look at which That puts Vauxhall | :04:46. | :04:48.
under the microscope. Vauxhall employs just under 2000 | :04:49. | :04:50.
staff in its Ellesmere Port plants, Its van making factory in Luton | :04:51. | :04:53.
employs 1400 people with around 18,000 jobs dependent on Vauxhall | :04:54. | :04:58.
around the UK. In all, Vauxhall makes just under | :04:59. | :05:01.
200,000 cars a year. And Vauxhall isn't the only British | :05:02. | :05:05.
car-maker which is facing upheaval. Nissan said this week is now needs | :05:06. | :05:09.
?100 million to support car BMW said it might now make | :05:10. | :05:12.
battery-powered Minis And Ford looks like it could be | :05:13. | :05:19.
shedding more than 1000 jobs in its engine making plant | :05:20. | :05:25.
in Bridgend in Wales. All of these companies | :05:26. | :05:29.
are demanding sweeteners And they all need to know, | :05:30. | :05:31.
just as she is in the middle of intensive and possibly divisive | :05:32. | :05:38.
talks, about the future trading relationship with | :05:39. | :05:40.
the EU. Donald Trump has accused the former | :05:41. | :05:42.
administration of tapping his phone The US President, writing on social | :05:43. | :05:48.
media, says he's been informed that wires from his Trump Towers property | :05:49. | :05:57.
were being tapped in October last The Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson | :05:58. | :06:00.
has announced that he will visit Moscow in the coming weeks, | :06:01. | :06:05.
in an attempt to improve It will be the first such trip by | :06:06. | :06:07.
a British Minister for five years. I'm joined by our political | :06:08. | :06:13.
correspondent Ellie Price. How significant is this? I think | :06:14. | :06:22.
it's a measure this hasn't happened in five years, and there could be | :06:23. | :06:27.
some awkward moments. In recent months Boris Johnson has accused | :06:28. | :06:31.
Russia of war crimes in Syria, suggested there is no case to relax | :06:32. | :06:35.
sanctions over the Ukraine and also suggested Russia has been engaged in | :06:36. | :06:39.
dirty tricks with regards to cyber attacks. The Russian Embassy has | :06:40. | :06:43.
suggested Boris Johnson bonds to reopen the Cold War. Much to talk | :06:44. | :06:47.
about. We are told during this visit Boris Johnson will continue to be | :06:48. | :06:51.
robust and that this isn't about cosying up to Moscow. But actually | :06:52. | :06:57.
an improvement in relations could be in the national interest of Britain. | :06:58. | :07:02.
Donald Trump has suggested he would like to have a relationship with | :07:03. | :07:06.
Russia regarding counterterrorism, the world is waiting to see how that | :07:07. | :07:10.
relationship plays out. It's probably not surprising Britain | :07:11. | :07:12.
would like to reset its own relationship. Thank you. | :07:13. | :07:17.
Police in Birmingham have launched an investigation | :07:18. | :07:19.
after a nine-year-old boy died from a suspected allergic reaction. | :07:20. | :07:22.
The child collapsed at the Al Hijrah School in Bordesley Green | :07:23. | :07:24.
Police say a post-mortem examination will be carried out, | :07:25. | :07:27.
to try to establish the cause of death. | :07:28. | :07:33.
With all the sport, here's Katherine Downes | :07:34. | :07:35.
The first Premier League fixture of the afternoon | :07:36. | :07:39.
is underway at Old Trafford where Manchester United | :07:40. | :07:41.
United have taken the lead. Marcus Rojo with his first Premier League | :07:42. | :07:55.

Rangers 1-0 up Hamilton academical. Martyn Waghorn scoring from the | :08:03. | :08:11.

Britain's Olympic bronze-medallist Asha Philip is through to | :08:16. | :08:17.
the semi-finals of the 60m at the European Indoor Athletics | :08:18. | :08:19.
Philip, who was part of Britain's 4x100m relay team in Rio, | :08:20. | :08:23.
The semis and final are tomorrow afternoon. | :08:24. | :08:26.
Richard Kilty made a good start to the defence of his 60m | :08:27. | :08:29.
title, winning his heat and finishing quickest overall. | :08:30. | :08:31.
He'll be joined in this evening's semi-finals by Theo Etienne | :08:32. | :08:33.
and Andrew Robertson, who also won their heats. | :08:34. | :08:38.
Jody Cundy produced a stunning ride to win | :08:39. | :08:39.
the C4 1km time trial at the Para-Cycling World | :08:40. | :08:42.
Cundy has never been beaten in this event, | :08:43. | :08:47.
it's his 13th world title in a career that also includes four | :08:48. | :08:50.
After all the talk, some of it not too pleasant, | :08:51. | :08:56.
Tony Bellew and David Haye will go head-to-head | :08:57. | :08:59.
at the O2 arena in London, it's live on BBC Radio | :09:00. | :09:02.
Bellew, the world cruiserweight champion, is fighting for the first | :09:03. | :09:07.
And he was nearly a stone lighter than Haye on the scales. | :09:08. | :09:18.
If his career had gone to plan, James Taylor would be a key member | :09:19. | :09:21.
of England's one day side in the West Indies right now. | :09:22. | :09:24.
But, just as he neared the peak of his career, | :09:25. | :09:26.
As he adapts to his new life, Taylor's been talking to the next | :09:27. | :09:31.
A gathering of English cricket's new professionals, young, Keane, | :09:32. | :09:46.
nonthinking their career will be over in their mid-20s. That's | :09:47. | :09:51.
exactly why the professional Cricketers Association invited James | :09:52. | :09:56.
Taylor to their rookie camp. I'm a glaring example of that, anything | :09:57. | :10:00.
can happen, no matter how young and no matter how healthy you think you | :10:01. | :10:05.
are, anything can happen. Sometimes I'm confident with my body and then | :10:06. | :10:09.
I have a real setback because my heart is doing things I'd never felt | :10:10. | :10:15.
it do before. It's a roller-coaster in trusting my body and it's a scary | :10:16. | :10:20.
place to be. James Taylor's internal defibrillator helps keep him alive. | :10:21. | :10:24.
His heart condition rare, his attitude exemplary. Being a former | :10:25. | :10:29.
sportsman can challenge anyone. The funeral of Australian rugby | :10:30. | :10:35.
international Dan Vickerman, after 63 Test matches, he seemed to be | :10:36. | :10:39.
dealing well with retirement. He wasn't. Every case is different, but | :10:40. | :10:44.
sport often demands a shared mentality. I always thought I was | :10:45. | :10:48.
invincible, every professional sportsman, everybody thinks they are | :10:49. | :10:53.
invincible. It dawned on me for months after this happened and that | :10:54. | :10:56.
hit me the hardest, knowing that I'm not invincible. The PCA encourages | :10:57. | :11:02.
Cricketers to develop new careers, to practice presentations to become | :11:03. | :11:08.
teachers or baristas. Anything, only a few English cricketers ever reach | :11:09. | :11:12.
the international scene. Standing here right now it's hard to imagine | :11:13. | :11:17.
a sultry summer evening. But feels like snow. But Edgbaston will be | :11:18. | :11:22.
holding the first-ever Day night Test match an England soil, when | :11:23. | :11:26.
England played the West Indies under floodlights. Professional sport is | :11:27. | :11:31.
always looking for the next thing. And everyone knows it's a short | :11:32. | :11:36.
career, but who at the start truly wants to believe it? Joe Wilson, BBC | :11:37. | :11:38.
