Good afternoon and welcome to the BBC News at One. | :00:22. | :00:24.
More than 100 people have been killed in Afghanistan | :00:25. | :00:26.
after an assault by the Taliban - on a military base in | :00:27. | :00:29.
Militants disguised themselves as soldiers, before carrying out | :00:30. | :00:34.
Those targeted were leaving a mosque, after Friday prayers. | :00:35. | :00:38.
Our South Asia Correspondent Justin Rowlatt reports. | :00:39. | :00:52.
It was during afternoon prayers that two suicide bombers blasted open the | :00:53. | :00:58.
entrance to this army base in the north of Afghanistan yesterday. | :00:59. | :01:04.
Eight other fighters, dressed in Afghan army uniforms, used heavy | :01:05. | :01:07.
machine guns to attack the dining areas of the base and the mosque. | :01:08. | :01:13.
Afghan troops have been pouring into the area. Eyewitnesses warned the | :01:14. | :01:17.
death toll would almost certainly rise. One man told the BBC he had | :01:18. | :01:25.
counted 165 bodies. The battle lasted for five hours, and today | :01:26. | :01:28.
dozens of injured soldiers were being treated in a local hospital. | :01:29. | :01:35.
TRANSLATION: When I came out of the mosque after prayers, three people | :01:36. | :01:39.
with army uniforms and an army vehicle started shooting at us. The | :01:40. | :01:45.
Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack and issued this | :01:46. | :01:49.
picture of the men it claims were behind it, ten are now dead, one was | :01:50. | :01:54.
captured alive. The assault on the army base is a shocking reminder of | :01:55. | :01:58.
just how tough the ongoing battle in Afghanistan is. Last month in Afghan | :01:59. | :02:05.
special forces helicopter landed on top of the military hospital in | :02:06. | :02:10.
Kabul after it was stormed by gunmen disguised as doctors. About 50 | :02:11. | :02:15.
people died in that attack. Two and a half years after the International | :02:16. | :02:19.
combat mission in Afghanistan ended and the Taliban now controls more | :02:20. | :02:24.
than a third of the country. And with casualties amongst the Afghan | :02:25. | :02:29.
forces running at almost 7000 a year there are questions about how long | :02:30. | :02:33.
the Afghan army can continue to defend the ground it still holds. | :02:34. | :02:43.
Justin Rowlatt Forced BBC News. -- Justin Rowlatt, BBC News. | :02:44. | :02:48.
In the first weekend of campaigning in the general election the leaders | :02:49. | :02:51.
of both main parties have been out and about. | :02:52. | :02:53.
The Labour Leader, Jeremy Corbyn, has been speaking | :02:54. | :02:55.
in Manchester and will be leafleting and door-knocking later. | :02:56. | :02:57.
In the last few minutes the Prime Minister has been | :02:58. | :03:01.
We are now only 47 days away from the general election. From what I | :03:02. | :03:10.
believe will be the most important election for this country in my | :03:11. | :03:15.
lifetime. Because this is an election which is about a future for | :03:16. | :03:19.
our country. And it's about ensuring that this country has a strong and | :03:20. | :03:25.
stable government, strong and stable leadership in the national interest. | :03:26. | :03:27.
Our political correspondent Leila Nathoo joins me, | :03:28. | :03:29.
Leila what are we expecting the parties to focus on today? | :03:30. | :03:32.
We have clear pictures already from Jeremy Corbyn and Theresa May. This | :03:33. | :03:39.
question of tax is coming on strong. It is. It comes from Philip | :03:40. | :03:43.
Hammond's comments yesterday when he appeared to hint at an end of a | :03:44. | :03:52.
pledge not to raise National Insurance, income tax or VAT. | :03:53. | :03:56.
Theresa May didn't say anything about this, but she always said the | :03:57. | :04:00.
Conservatives would be the party of low tax, and stated the record of | :04:01. | :04:07.
taking more people out of income tax than ever before. Jeremy Corbyn was | :04:08. | :04:13.
also asked about tax. He said Labour would be ensuring that tax burdens | :04:14. | :04:16.
did not fall on the shoulders of those on lowering comes. He vowed to | :04:17. | :04:21.
take back billions of pounds he accused the Conservatives of, he | :04:22. | :04:24.
vowed to take that back from big businesses and reversing what he | :04:25. | :04:28.
called tax cuts. He is keen to make this election about schools, | :04:29. | :04:32.
hospitals and housing. Theresa May with Brexit at the centre of her | :04:33. | :04:37.
campaign. On this first weekend of campaigning it is becoming clear | :04:38. | :04:40.
just how all the parties will be fighting it. | :04:41. | :04:43.
Plenty to talk about in the weeks ahead. Thanks very much. | :04:44. | :04:45.
The SNP's national executive has confirmed that their 54 MPs will be | :04:46. | :04:48.
reselected as candidates for the general election. | :04:49. | :04:50.
The party will also chose candidates in the five | :04:51. | :04:52.
This includes the two represented by Natalie McGarry | :04:53. | :04:55.
and Michelle Thomson, both elected as SNP MPs, but who now | :04:56. | :04:58.
They are not eligible to stand for the party. | :04:59. | :05:10.
The former Conservative cabinet minister, Sir Eric Pickles, | :05:11. | :05:12.
has become the latest MP to announce that he won't seek | :05:13. | :05:14.
Sir Eric - who has represented Brentwood and Ongar | :05:15. | :05:18.
in Essex, since 1992, said he felt now was | :05:19. | :05:21.
But says he will miss the Commons dreadfully. | :05:22. | :05:27.
Clashes have broken out in the German city of Cologne | :05:28. | :05:29.
as tens of thousands of demonstrators picket a hall | :05:30. | :05:32.
where the anti-immigration AFD party is holding a conference. | :05:33. | :05:35.
A huge police operation is being mounted, with up to 50 | :05:36. | :05:38.
thousand protesters expected to descend on the city. | :05:39. | :05:43.
Our correspondent Jenny Hill is there. | :05:44. | :05:48.
Good afternoon. This is how Cologne is responding to Germany's most | :05:49. | :05:58.
controversial political party. Police expect up to 50,000 people to | :05:59. | :06:02.
hold demonstrations and protests at various sites across the city this | :06:03. | :06:07.
afternoon. This is one of these protests going on behind me. You can | :06:08. | :06:12.
see it is relatively peaceful. And quite musical, one chap has turned | :06:13. | :06:17.
up with a grand piano. Police have reported a number of skirmishes | :06:18. | :06:20.
elsewhere during one of those scuffles with police officer was | :06:21. | :06:24.
injured, but not seriously we are told. One AFD delegate had an iron | :06:25. | :06:28.
bar thrown at them as they tried to make their way into the conference. | :06:29. | :06:36.
This morning we saw some protesters trying to prevent what they thought | :06:37. | :06:39.
was another delegate getting through the police cordon to overhear where | :06:40. | :06:43.
the conference is being held. A controversial conference. The | :06:44. | :06:48.
fractures mood inside. AFD, a party in crisis, they are slipping in the | :06:49. | :06:52.
polls, and the most recognisable figure from the party has announced | :06:53. | :06:56.
she won't be standing to lead the party into the general election. She | :06:57. | :07:01.
wants to take the party into a more mainstream direction. That has | :07:02. | :07:04.
angered the more extreme members of the AFD. It'll be a controversial | :07:05. | :07:09.
afternoon in the conference there. Thank you. | :07:10. | :07:11.
The Sun newspaper has printed a formal apology to Everton | :07:12. | :07:13.
Former editor Kelvin McKenzie compared the footballer | :07:14. | :07:19.
to a gorilla in an article last week. | :07:20. | :07:21.
Ross Barkley's grandfather is from Nigeria but the newspaper says | :07:22. | :07:23.
Kelvin McKenzie remains suspended from The Sun. | :07:24. | :07:26.
And an Italian professional cyclist has been killed | :07:27. | :07:28.
after being hit by a van, while out training. | :07:29. | :07:32.
37-year-old Michele Scarponi rode for the Astana team - | :07:33. | :07:34.
The crash happened on a crossroads, near his home, in central Italy. | :07:35. | :07:43.
With all the sport, Jessica Creighton at | :07:44. | :07:45.
Good afternoon. An incredible start to the Scottish cup semifinal | :07:46. | :07:58.
between the holders Hibernian and Aberdeen. Adam Rooney put Aberdeen | :07:59. | :08:05.
ahead after just 11 seconds. Ryan Christie scored from a free kick, | :08:06. | :08:12.
that made it 2-0. But Hibernian are back in it, thanks to substitute | :08:13. | :08:16.
Grant Holt. It is half-time at Hampden Park. | :08:17. | :08:22.
And the first of the FA Cup semifinals kicks off at 5:15pm. It | :08:23. | :08:27.
is the best two teams in the Premier League, Chelsea against Tottenham, | :08:28. | :08:32.
and it is live on BBC One. Manchester City women face a huge | :08:33. | :08:35.
test this afternoon. They are up against defending champions Lyon in | :08:36. | :08:43.
their first leg. This is their first season playing in the competition. | :08:44. | :08:53.
Lyon have reached five of the last seven finals. | :08:54. | :08:56.
Ronnie O'Sullivan was his usual entertaining self after reaching the | :08:57. | :08:59.
quarterfinals of the World Snooker Championship. He hit a century break | :09:00. | :09:05.
on his way to a 13-7 win over Murphy before explaining his current | :09:06. | :09:09.
approach to the game. I think Snooker is a little bit like you are | :09:10. | :09:13.
a pop star now. If you can make a good album every year you will do | :09:14. | :09:17.
well. If you don't produce an album you go missing. I've decided to play | :09:18. | :09:21.
a lot of exhibitions, do a lot of work, and it has taken the pressure | :09:22. | :09:26.
off me, really. I don't feel I have anything to prove. I thought, I will | :09:27. | :09:29.
give myself seven weeks to practice for this. It might have made a | :09:30. | :09:34.
difference, maybe not, but, yes, I've put in more practising for it, | :09:35. | :09:38.
but I haven't played for a year, basically. Great Britain are trying | :09:39. | :09:43.
to get back into the world group of the Fed cup for the first time since | :09:44. | :09:48.
1993. They are playing Romania. Joe Konta is set up against Sabrina | :09:49. | :09:52.
could stay in the second singles match. She needs a win to level the | :09:53. | :09:57.
tie after Heather Watson lost to the world number five, Simona Halep. | :09:58. | :10:04.
Christina Horak who leads a 19 strong British squad at the world we | :10:05. | :10:08.
live in the Bahamas this weekend. -- Chris | :10:09. | :10:18.
takes less than a moment to realise you are at the Bahamas rather than | :10:19. | :10:24.
Britain. But the majority of the world's best are here because of | :10:25. | :10:30.
London which hosts the competition this summer. Teams need to race here | :10:31. | :10:36.
to perform relay places there. It doesn't feel like we're at a | :10:37. | :10:40.
Championships, but it is a serious event and are excited to compete. | :10:41. | :10:46.
For Adam to Lely, fourth at the Olympics, this marks the start of a | :10:47. | :10:57.
red to redemption. -- Adam Gemilli. I was gutted. I started sobbing. I | :10:58. | :11:01.
broke down. I didn't know what to do with myself because in 20 seconds | :11:02. | :11:08.
Mike dream was over. That is why the medals mean so much. -- my dream was | :11:09. | :11:15.
over. They won gold at the 2004 Athens games but mistakes during the | :11:16. | :11:19.
changeover is at Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016 cost the | :11:20. | :11:25.
men potential medals in all of those events. The women excelled at the | :11:26. | :11:29.
Olympics, claiming two bronze medals. They now want to establish | :11:30. | :11:34.
themselves as one of the world's best relay nations. We know it is | :11:35. | :11:38.
going to be tough. Lots of other teams would have liked that bronze | :11:39. | :11:42.
medal. They were capable of winning it. We have arrows on our backs. We | :11:43. | :11:48.
are in a position of a huge advantage of coming in with loads of | :11:49. | :11:53.
confidence and capability. The British team have enjoyed their time | :11:54. | :11:56.
in the sun and the media spotlight so far this week and will be hoping | :11:57. | :11:59.
this is the only time they dropped the baton in the Bahamas. | :12:00. | :12:08.
That is all of the sport. Thanks very much. The next news on | :12:09. | :12:13.
BBC One is at 4:30pm. Have a good afternoon. | :12:14. | :12:15.
Quiet weather right now. But a cold snap is on the way, just a slight | :12:16. | :12:28.
echo of winter but not until | :12:29. | :12:30. |
