Thousands of people take to the streets of Manchester | :00:00. | :00:09.
Remembering the 22 victims of Monday's bomb attack, | :00:10. | :00:16.
the city came together for the Great Northern Run to show | :00:17. | :00:18.
It has obviously been an exceptionally difficult week for | :00:19. | :00:24.
But what the Great Run Manchester is saying is we will get | :00:25. | :00:29.
through it, it will go forward together. | :00:30. | :00:31.
There were more raids and arrests today in | :00:32. | :00:34.
We'll have the latest live from Manchester. | :00:35. | :00:40.
Misery for BA passengers as more flights are cancelled and delayed | :00:41. | :00:45.
I've never seen anything like it in my life. | :00:46. | :00:52.
We've always flown BA, we've always been happy with BA, | :00:53. | :00:55.
I don't think we can trust them again. | :00:56. | :01:03.
And back to winning ways for the former Wimbledon | :01:04. | :01:05.
champion Petra Kvitova, after surviving a knife attack last | :01:06. | :01:08.
The victims of the Manchester terror attack have been remembered | :01:09. | :01:34.
in church services across the city today while thousands of runners | :01:35. | :01:38.
have been taking part in the Great Manchester Run. | :01:39. | :01:42.
The organisers say they were determined it should go ahead | :01:43. | :01:45.
In the centre of Manchester, people ran in remembrance and in defiance. | :01:46. | :02:05.
Holding this race in the streets just days after an attack here | :02:06. | :02:07.
was in itself sending an important message. | :02:08. | :02:15.
It has been an exceptionally difficult week for everybody but | :02:16. | :02:20.
Greater Manchester is saying we will get through it and go forward | :02:21. | :02:21.
together. This simple act of gathering | :02:22. | :02:23.
together after a bombing that left so many families grieving expressed | :02:24. | :02:26.
a sentiment that only a few could Do something through | :02:27. | :02:29.
courage and through pain. Do something for someone | :02:30. | :02:37.
that you care for. Do something to help | :02:38. | :02:39.
out with the cost. Do something for someone | :02:40. | :02:43.
that you're there for. Do something for someone | :02:44. | :02:45.
that you've lost. Yet this attempt to return | :02:46. | :02:51.
to normality exposed what has become at least for the moment | :02:52. | :02:55.
the new normal. Armed officers and extra security | :02:56. | :02:59.
are now an obvious presence, here to offer reassurance, | :03:00. | :03:03.
but they're also a reminder of what happened in Manchester | :03:04. | :03:06.
less than a week ago. Yes, I was a bit nervous, | :03:07. | :03:09.
I'm here with my husband. If anything else could have | :03:10. | :03:12.
happened, you know.... I've got children at home, | :03:13. | :03:14.
so I did think twice, People paid their respects | :03:15. | :03:18.
all along the race route. And at services nearby | :03:19. | :03:34.
in Manchester Cathedral. Today we remember Megan Hurley, | :03:35. | :03:38.
Elaine McIver, Courtney Boyle, There, the names of each one | :03:39. | :03:42.
of the 22 people killed The family and friends of one of | :03:43. | :04:08.
them, Martyn Hett, stopped this evening. Like so many others, they | :04:09. | :04:13.
are trying to move on into remembering, not forgetting. That | :04:14. | :04:17.
leaves Manchester City is still in need of both support and | :04:18. | :04:21.
reassurance. Chris Buckler, BBC News, Manchester. | :04:22. | :04:25.
Police investigating the Manchester Arena attack have | :04:26. | :04:29.
arrested another man on suspicion of terrorism offences and have | :04:30. | :04:31.
carried out searches in the Moss Side area of the city. | :04:32. | :04:37.
13 people are now being held for questioning. | :04:38. | :04:43.
This massive police operation continued at a frantic pace today. | :04:44. | :04:49.
1000 officers and police staff were involved. The arrests continued. And | :04:50. | :04:55.
man pulled from his car in the middle of the street in Trafford. A | :04:56. | :05:01.
raid on a house in the Moss Side area. Heavily armed police arrested | :05:02. | :05:05.
three men, at one point bringing a police dog. Roads were closed. | :05:06. | :05:09.
Later, police and most all those arrested had been released, despite | :05:10. | :05:14.
the daughter of one of them being blown from the hinges with | :05:15. | :05:17.
explosives. The family insisted we had nothing to do with the bombing. | :05:18. | :05:22.
In this area in particular, the police operation is causing enormous | :05:23. | :05:26.
and rest. We don't want anything like this in our community, it is so | :05:27. | :05:31.
ridiculous. I am annoyed. It is not a nice feeling at all. People here | :05:32. | :05:38.
worry there will be a backlash. In fact, this operation has touched | :05:39. | :05:41.
many communities in the city. The explosions and guns or unnerving but | :05:42. | :05:46.
life does go on. 12 remain in custody and more arrests are | :05:47. | :05:54.
expected. Chris Buckler is a Manchester. What are the police | :05:55. | :06:00.
saying about the state of the investigation? Women a dozen people | :06:01. | :06:04.
being questioned and a dozen locations being searched, they | :06:05. | :06:07.
continue to appeal for information and ask people for help in | :06:08. | :06:11.
identifying CCTV footage and giving them more information about the | :06:12. | :06:15.
bomber. Beyond that, they have released an unusual statement | :06:16. | :06:19.
tonight, thanking people for their kindness and support. That goes for | :06:20. | :06:22.
the way they have been treating strangers as well as the way they | :06:23. | :06:25.
have been treating the emergency services. A real sense of | :06:26. | :06:30.
solidarity. Indeed, there were scenes of solidarity and | :06:31. | :06:32.
togetherness we saw earlier at the Great Manchester Run, they were | :06:33. | :06:39.
extraordinary. Yes and you get a real sense that although this has | :06:40. | :06:42.
been an emotional day from Manchester, it is not just tears, | :06:43. | :06:47.
there has been laughter and cheers, this city is determined to show its | :06:48. | :06:51.
resilience and you will find that no more so than here at Saint and | :06:52. | :06:56.
square. Behind me, the number of balloons and flowers and messages of | :06:57. | :07:00.
solidarity continue to grow. And while the city gets back to normal | :07:01. | :07:04.
and the hustle and bustle continues in the streets around Europe, this | :07:05. | :07:10.
place remains quiet and calm. It is a place to remember and if one thing | :07:11. | :07:15.
is clear today, it is that the people of Manchester are determined | :07:16. | :07:19.
to remember. Many thanks for that. Chris Buckler in Manchester. | :07:20. | :07:22.
Both the Conservatives and Labour have been focusing | :07:23. | :07:24.
on national security today in the election campaign. | :07:25. | :07:26.
The Home Secretary, Amber Rudd, reaffirmed that the Conservatives | :07:27. | :07:28.
would set up a commission to promote British values and tackle extremism, | :07:29. | :07:32.
while Labour wants to recruit 1000 security experts in addition | :07:33. | :07:35.
Here's our political correspondent, Alex Forsyth. | :07:36. | :07:43.
In the aftermath of such an atrocity, inevitable questions | :07:44. | :07:45.
about how to stop something like this happening again. | :07:46. | :07:51.
The actions of this man, Salman Abedi, forced a pause | :07:52. | :07:54.
Now preventing others like him is part of the debate. | :07:55. | :08:01.
The Home Secretary said today the Government had for the first | :08:02. | :08:04.
time used powers to prevent suspected terrorists | :08:05. | :08:06.
On the Manchester attack, she said police and security | :08:07. | :08:12.
With questions about who knew what and when, she was asked | :08:13. | :08:19.
about reports that friends and community leaders had raised | :08:20. | :08:21.
Was Salman Abedi on a surveillance list? | :08:22. | :08:26.
I don't know those details that you have set out to me | :08:27. | :08:29.
because the intelligence services are still collecting information | :08:30. | :08:32.
But I wouldn't rush to conclusions, as you seem to be, that they somehow | :08:33. | :08:38.
People had phoned the terror hotline, as they are told to do. | :08:39. | :08:43.
And the reason we have put in place the terror hotline, | :08:44. | :08:48.
the reason we have put in place the Prevent strategy | :08:49. | :08:51.
is because we recognise the scale of the problem. | :08:52. | :08:53.
So what would different parties do to tackle the problem? | :08:54. | :08:56.
Well, the Conservatives would introduce | :08:57. | :08:58.
So far short on detail, it would advise new laws and policies. | :08:59. | :09:05.
Yhey say they have committed extra funding for counterterrorism | :09:06. | :09:08.
agencies and recruiting more security officers. | :09:09. | :09:12.
Labour, too, has promised more security and intelligence staff | :09:13. | :09:14.
and 10,000 more police officers as well as more prison | :09:15. | :09:17.
In the battle for power here, Labour are attacking | :09:18. | :09:23.
the Conservatives over cuts, saying they have left | :09:24. | :09:25.
The Tories are defending their record on crime. | :09:26. | :09:31.
But like so much in this election, want to make this | :09:32. | :09:33.
The Shadow Home Secretary was asked again today about past | :09:34. | :09:39.
comments she had made, seemingly supportive of the IRA. | :09:40. | :09:44.
It was 34 years ago, I had a rather splendid Afro at the time. | :09:45. | :09:48.
I don't have the same hairstyle and I don't have the same views. | :09:49. | :09:53.
Labour says the focus now should be how to keep | :09:54. | :09:55.
people safe from this, an attack which, rather | :09:56. | :09:58.
than undermine the democratic system, has highlighted the choice | :09:59. | :10:01.
Who is best to lead, who is best to protect? | :10:02. | :10:07.
Thousands of British airways passengers have faced a second day | :10:08. | :10:22.
of disruption following a global IT failure. Flights at Gatwick are | :10:23. | :10:25.
getting back to normal but a third of services from Heathrow from BA | :10:26. | :10:28.
were cancelled because of the knock-on effects around the world of | :10:29. | :10:32.
the disruption yesterday. Passengers in Rome have been told it would not | :10:33. | :10:35.
be able to fly back to the UK until Tuesday. Joe Lynam is at Heathrow. | :10:36. | :10:45.
Good evening. A day after queueing and cancellations and questionable | :10:46. | :10:48.
customer care. Hundreds of BA passengers still at the terminal | :10:49. | :10:52.
trying to catch delayed flights, thousands have had the holidays | :10:53. | :10:55.
curtailed or ruined. The airline says things are getting back to | :10:56. | :10:59.
normal but for many people, today did not feel like normal. | :11:00. | :11:03.
For some BA customers, it had been a long, | :11:04. | :11:05.
Bleary passengers this morning, still hoping to catch their plane. | :11:06. | :11:08.
Even free bottles of water in a heavily | :11:09. | :11:13.
It's just a lot of moving around, standing in lines | :11:14. | :11:18.
I think it's too big that they don't know what to do with it. | :11:19. | :11:25.
We've been in the line for about five hours, we have no | :11:26. | :11:28.
idea how much longer we'll be here and we're getting no | :11:29. | :11:30.
Sarah Booth and her family should be on holiday in Budapest. | :11:31. | :11:35.
Instead she is stuck having lunch at a pub near Heathrow. | :11:36. | :11:40.
She was told by BA to come to the airport, only to find | :11:41. | :11:43.
We only travelled based on the fact our fight | :11:44. | :11:48.
was still running and we had been told by BA to make sure | :11:49. | :11:51.
all flights were running, before we left home and we did that. | :11:52. | :11:54.
Malvern in Worcestershire and my sister and her family have | :11:55. | :11:58.
BA passengers in Rome have been told it might be Tuesday | :11:59. | :12:04.
Some travelled here by train from Naples, after spending hours | :12:05. | :12:07.
on a plane there yesterday that never took off. | :12:08. | :12:11.
We've been booked on a flight from here to Barcelona, | :12:12. | :12:14.
and Barcelona to London, but our Barcelona fight has been | :12:15. | :12:19.
delayed an hour and so we have 30 minutes to get the connecting flight | :12:20. | :12:22.
in the hope we get back to London tonight. | :12:23. | :12:25.
Otherwise we've got to wait two days. | :12:26. | :12:28.
As thousands of people waited in a packed Heathrow, | :12:29. | :12:32.
dozens of flights were cancelled and many more will not | :12:33. | :12:34.
depart as the airline struggled to reset its global network after a | :12:35. | :12:37.
That, for some aviation insiders, is inexcusable. | :12:38. | :12:45.
What seems remarkable is that there | :12:46. | :12:47.
was no back-up system kicking in within minutes | :12:48. | :12:48.
Businesses of this size need systems backed up all the time. | :12:49. | :12:57.
That's what passengers expect and rely on. | :12:58. | :13:01.
Some passengers have been told their flight is cancelled | :13:02. | :13:08.
online and then get the exact opposite message when they call | :13:09. | :13:11.
This problem looks set to persist for far more than just a few hours. | :13:12. | :13:21.
Still lots of problems and confusion, is BA giving clear advice | :13:22. | :13:30.
to passengers tonight? We have asked for interviews with BA to clarify | :13:31. | :13:35.
what has gone on and they have not put anyone up. The Chief Executive | :13:36. | :13:41.
did post a video message today and yesterday in which he apologised to | :13:42. | :13:45.
customers once again for the chaos and said his team are pulling out | :13:46. | :13:48.
all of the stops to get things back to normal. We urge passengers not to | :13:49. | :13:54.
come to the airport unless they have a confirmed booking for their | :13:55. | :13:58.
flight, not to come to the airport any earlier than 90 minutes before | :13:59. | :14:02.
take-off and always check they manage my booking part of the | :14:03. | :14:06.
website. But this will have a major... Major issues for BA going | :14:07. | :14:13.
forward, not just financial cost of compensation but the reputational | :14:14. | :14:17.
damage, people said they would never fly with BA again so they will have | :14:18. | :14:21.
to work hard to put this back on an even keel going forward. Thank you, | :14:22. | :14:24.
Joe Lynam at Heathrow. A man's been shot dead | :14:25. | :14:28.
in a supermarket car The victim, who was 55, | :14:29. | :14:30.
was hit several times as he got out Hundreds of shoppers | :14:31. | :14:34.
were in the area. Northern Ireland Police have | :14:35. | :14:39.
launched a murder inquiry. Six men who accused the late | :14:40. | :14:43.
Lord Janner of sexually abusing them as children have | :14:44. | :14:46.
abandoned their civil case. He was charged with 22 sexual | :14:47. | :14:49.
offences dating back to the 1960s, but the 87-year-old was found unfit | :14:50. | :14:54.
to stand trial just days His accusers had been seeking | :14:55. | :14:56.
damages from his estate. The Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, | :14:57. | :15:06.
has refused any possibility of an alliance with the Scottish | :15:07. | :15:09.
National Party, if there's a hung The leader of the SNP, | :15:10. | :15:12.
Nicola Sturgeon, had said in an interview today | :15:13. | :15:20.
that she would consider what she called a progressive | :15:21. | :15:24.
alliance with Mr Corbyn, despite having reservations | :15:25. | :15:26.
about his leadership and policies. He's been campaigning in Glasgow | :15:27. | :15:28.
tonight from where our Jeremy Corbyn is clearly enthused by | :15:29. | :15:41.
opinion polls suggesting increasing support for Labour. As he promises | :15:42. | :15:48.
higher public spending, he says the Tories are trying to hide cuts in a | :15:49. | :15:52.
dishonest manifesto. That means there is a risk to the quality of | :15:53. | :15:58.
public services. Not my words, that is a damning verdict of the | :15:59. | :16:01.
Institute for Fiscal Studies. But the IFF has also taken aim at | :16:02. | :16:07.
Labour's manifesto. The Institute of this custom is has said your tax | :16:08. | :16:11.
plans will not raise as much money as you think. If that was the case, | :16:12. | :16:15.
would you choose to raise taxes or cut public spending? What they have | :16:16. | :16:20.
said is it is a gap between what we have said we would raise and what | :16:21. | :16:24.
they believe could be raised from existing taxes. What they have not | :16:25. | :16:28.
taken into consideration is the effectiveness of transaction taxes, | :16:29. | :16:32.
which we want to bring in, and offshore property taxes that we want | :16:33. | :16:35.
to bring in. We believe they will raise money necessary. The city of | :16:36. | :16:41.
Glasgow always used to be known as an absolutely rock-solid Labour | :16:42. | :16:44.
heartland. What has happened to the party here is a good illustration of | :16:45. | :16:49.
what has happened across Scotland. Until recently, every Glasgow MP was | :16:50. | :16:54.
Labour. In the 2015 election they lost every seat in the city to the | :16:55. | :17:00.
SNP. Now, but even their most optimistic campaigners believe they | :17:01. | :17:02.
are likely to win any of them back in the selection. Labour are | :17:03. | :17:06.
fighting to keep the single MP they have in Scotland, and maybe add a | :17:07. | :17:15.
couple more to add him company. At a vintage year in the East End of | :17:16. | :17:19.
Glasgow, I spoke to voters who switched between Labour and the SNP | :17:20. | :17:24.
in the past. I really like Jeremy Corbyn's manifesto and his attitude | :17:25. | :17:28.
and his beliefs in what he stands for. Good neighbour tempt you back? | :17:29. | :17:33.
Not with Jeremy Corbyn. The MORI listen to Jeremy Corbyn, the MORI | :17:34. | :17:36.
believe he speaks from the heart. You would vote for him? Yes. | :17:37. | :17:42.
Tonight, the SNP leader said she would consider a coalition with | :17:43. | :17:46.
Labour. If there was a hung parliament, of course we would look | :17:47. | :17:49.
to be part of the Progressive Alliance that pursued policies but | :17:50. | :17:53.
let us get back to the reality of this election. The reality of the | :17:54. | :17:57.
selection, even with narrowing polls, is we will face a Tory | :17:58. | :18:01.
government perhaps with a bigger majority so my priority is to say to | :18:02. | :18:05.
people in Scotland, if you want our interests protected and our voice | :18:06. | :18:11.
heard, you must vote SNP. Jeremy Corbyn says no coalitions and no | :18:12. | :18:15.
pacts with anyone. He insists he believes he can win this election | :18:16. | :18:18.
outright. Sarah Smith, BBC News, Glasgow. | :18:19. | :18:23.
Back to the election now and there's one thing | :18:24. | :18:25.
all the parties seem to agree on - that the UK housing | :18:26. | :18:28.
Some believe it's actually broken, with the supply of homes failing | :18:29. | :18:32.
All the major parties are pledging to help both renters and buyers. | :18:33. | :18:36.
As part of our Reality Check series on the key issues | :18:37. | :18:38.
in the run-up to the election, Steph McGovern investigates | :18:39. | :18:40.
Having a place to call home is a dream for a lot | :18:41. | :18:46.
of people but does it matter if you own it or not? | :18:47. | :18:49.
Home ownership is now at its lowest level since 1985, | :18:50. | :18:54.
whereas private renting is at its highest since the 1980s. | :18:55. | :18:58.
That is partly because it is much harder now to save for a deposit. | :18:59. | :19:02.
So if you look back at the '90s, it would take an average household | :19:03. | :19:05.
three years if they were saving 5% of their income every year | :19:06. | :19:10.
Let's get some thoughts on this with my cleverly placed mic... | :19:11. | :19:19.
Mark, I am pleased to say you have just bought your first | :19:20. | :19:24.
Was it hard getting the money together? | :19:25. | :19:27.
It did take a number of years to save up | :19:28. | :19:29.
And I've been very fortunate that I have my parents | :19:30. | :19:33.
and my partner's parents to chip in for the deposit as well. | :19:34. | :19:36.
Without that, we wouldn't have been able to get a home. | :19:37. | :19:39.
Yes, the Bank of Mum and Dad makes a big difference, doesn't it? | :19:40. | :19:42.
Steph, for you, you are renting at the moment, can you see a day | :19:43. | :19:45.
when you can buy a home, is that what you want to do? | :19:46. | :19:48.
Yeah, I'd like to buy eventually but I think at the same time | :19:49. | :19:51.
as renting it is quite difficult to save for a deposit. | :19:52. | :19:54.
When do you reckon you will be able to buy? | :19:55. | :19:58.
So although renting can provide flexibility for people like Steph, | :19:59. | :20:02.
things can be tough for Generation Rent. | :20:03. | :20:06.
Over the last six years, rents have been going up | :20:07. | :20:09.
Now the gap between the two has grown to 15%, which means keeping up | :20:10. | :20:14.
with rising rents can be really tough. | :20:15. | :20:18.
David, you are a housing provider, there are people out | :20:19. | :20:20.
there who don't necessarily want to own their own home. | :20:21. | :20:23.
There are people who want to rent, for every home we let there is 120 | :20:24. | :20:26.
people or 150 people who want to rent it, | :20:27. | :20:29.
so there are loads of people who want to rent. | :20:30. | :20:32.
We offer people opportunities to buy and we have this new scheme called | :20:33. | :20:37.
Rent To Buy so you can rent to begin with and then you can buy it | :20:38. | :20:41.
after five years and you pay less than the market rent | :20:42. | :20:43.
If you take the UK's low-paid workforce, perhaps people | :20:44. | :20:51.
in jobs like hairdressing, security, factory workers, then | :20:52. | :20:55.
according to research by Shelter, 15 hours of their working week | :20:56. | :20:57.
So that's three hours of every day slogging it just to keep | :20:58. | :21:05.
And Kate, this is all about affordability, isn't it? | :21:06. | :21:10.
Absolutely, people's rents are just completely out of step | :21:11. | :21:12.
And people are really struggling to keep up with that kind of rent. | :21:13. | :21:17.
We have also found that people have to borrow, getting into debt, | :21:18. | :21:20.
putting loans on credit cards just to pay the rent. | :21:21. | :21:23.
They can't afford to save, which means, of course, | :21:24. | :21:25.
they have very little hope of putting a deposit aside | :21:26. | :21:28.
There's just generally a really big problem between what people | :21:29. | :21:33.
are ending and how much they have to pay on rent. | :21:34. | :21:36.
And it puts a lot of pressure on them. | :21:37. | :21:38.
There is also quite a generational difference so half of 24-35 Google's | :21:39. | :21:49.
rent privately, almost double compared to what it was ten years | :21:50. | :21:56.
ago. With buying down and renting up, owning a home is less of a | :21:57. | :22:00.
realistic aspiration for many. Instead, it looks like we could be | :22:01. | :22:03.
moving to more of the German model of living, when renting is seen as | :22:04. | :22:09.
the norm. Steph McGovern, BBC News, Manchester. | :22:10. | :22:12.
With all the sport, here's Karthi Gnanasegram | :22:13. | :22:13.
The second Grand Slam of the tennis season started today but it's | :22:14. | :22:21.
already over for the top seed, Angelique Kerber. | :22:22. | :22:27.
She became the first women's world number one to be knocked | :22:28. | :22:30.
out of the French Open in the first round. | :22:31. | :22:32.
But fans' favourite, Petra Kvitova, made a triumphant | :22:33. | :22:37.
It has never taken Petra Kvitova so much to reach the first round. | :22:38. | :22:47.
Five months ago everything was in doubt. | :22:48. | :22:49.
A knife attack at her home left with tendon damage on her left | :22:50. | :22:56.
She only stepped onto a practice court earlier this month so has | :22:57. | :23:09.
to rely on skill and stealth rather than strength. | :23:10. | :23:14.
That comes from the stands where her family sit. | :23:15. | :23:19.
The first set was won, the second followed | :23:20. | :23:21.
This is the eighth time she has made it to the second | :23:22. | :23:25.
It was a nice and really heart-warming welcome. | :23:26. | :23:30.
My team was there, my family were there, everyone who helped me | :23:31. | :23:32.
I am happy with the game, of course, but it was not really | :23:33. | :23:43.
