The Metropolitan Police has confirmed it's paid compensation,

:00:22.:00:27.

to the former Chief of the Defence Staff,

:00:28.:00:29.

Field Marshal Lord Bramall, and the family of the late

:00:30.:00:32.

Both men had been falsely accused of child sexual

:00:33.:00:38.

abuse by an informant, who's now being investigated

:00:39.:00:40.

for allegedly perverting the course of justice.

:00:41.:00:41.

They were claims which seemed to go right to the heart

:00:42.:00:47.

After a 14 month investigation which went nowhere, a review

:00:48.:00:54.

But not before police had raided the homes of Lord Bramall,

:00:55.:01:02.

one of Britain's most senior former military figures.

:01:03.:01:04.

Lord Brittan, the former Home Secretary, who had died.

:01:05.:01:06.

And Harvey Proctor, once a Conservative MP.

:01:07.:01:11.

Names among those offered by this man, known as Nick,

:01:12.:01:13.

who still can't be named for legal reasons.

:01:14.:01:17.

A retired judge found police had failed to properly

:01:18.:01:19.

Applications for search warrants contained inaccuracies.

:01:20.:01:24.

And the investigation went on too long.

:01:25.:01:30.

It's thought Lord Bramall and Lord Brittan's family have

:01:31.:01:34.

received around ?100,000 each in compensation from the police.

:01:35.:01:37.

I've never complained about being investigated.

:01:38.:01:41.

It was only the heavy-handed and very unintelligent way

:01:42.:01:44.

I mean, I think they could have said...

:01:45.:01:54.

If they'd taken any trouble to put their effort onto questioning

:01:55.:01:58.

the so-called victim, I think they would have found

:01:59.:02:00.

He lost his job and his home when he became embroiled

:02:01.:02:08.

Negotiations between Mr Proctor's lawyers and the police continue.

:02:09.:02:16.

The man who made the original allegations is himself

:02:17.:02:18.

being investigated, to see whether he deliberately

:02:19.:02:20.

Tom Symonds, BBC News, Scotland Yard.

:02:21.:02:29.

The UN now says as many as 41 million people have been affected

:02:30.:02:33.

by heavy monsoon rains across South Asia,

:02:34.:02:40.

leading to the worst flooding in the region for several years.

:02:41.:02:42.

Whole communities have been uprooted across India,

:02:43.:02:44.

Bangladesh and Nepal, and at least 1400 people

:02:45.:02:46.

Our correspondent, Justin Rowlatt, has just sent us this report

:02:47.:02:49.

from the city of Katihar, in one of the worst affected

:02:50.:02:52.

regions, Bihar state, in north east India,

:02:53.:02:54.

Where we're going can only be reached by boat.

:02:55.:03:04.

The only dry place for miles around is on top of this great embankment,

:03:05.:03:10.

but the embankment that now protects the villagers is the reason

:03:11.:03:12.

the floods had such a catastrophic impact.

:03:13.:03:23.

The torrential rains transformed the normally placid river,

:03:24.:03:25.

So what happened, the embankment holding back the river breached

:03:26.:03:30.

and the water came crashing in here, sweeping away half the village,

:03:31.:03:33.

devastating their homes, devastating their lives.

:03:34.:03:38.

TRANSLATION: It felt like we were hit by an ocean

:03:39.:03:41.

of water, I just ran for my life, taking my children with me.

:03:42.:03:45.

This man showed me what the floods had done to his home.

:03:46.:03:56.

So, he said the whole place was flooded with water.

:03:57.:04:07.

The water was above his head and came rushing through here.

:04:08.:04:11.

You can see, it's just left absolutely terrible mud behind.

:04:12.:04:17.

So, he says for three days they had no food

:04:18.:04:21.

at all and then some people came, bringing food.

:04:22.:04:23.

He said there wasn't enough room to stay on the embankment so he had

:04:24.:04:31.

to bring his family down here, including his three-year-old child.

:04:32.:04:33.

It is Eid today, one of the great festivals of Islam.

:04:34.:04:38.

Like most of the village, this family is Muslim.

:04:39.:04:50.

For the first time since the catastrophe they are having

:04:51.:04:52.

meat, but there was little appetite for celebration.

:04:53.:04:54.

Tens of thousands of communities across South Asia have

:04:55.:04:56.

similar stories of horror and destruction to tell.

:04:57.:04:59.

The only good news here, is that everyone in this village survived.

:05:00.:05:03.

Nearly 60,000 refugees from Myanmar's Rohinga Muslim

:05:04.:05:27.

minority, have fled the country, to neighbouring Bangladesh.

:05:28.:05:29.

The exodus follows weeks of violence, involving Rohinga

:05:30.:05:31.

militants, and a counter-offensive launched by the Myanmar military,

:05:32.:05:33.

President Trump has flown into Texas today for his second visit this week

:05:34.:05:41.

to areas affected by Hurricane Harvey.

:05:42.:05:43.

He's meeting survivors of the storm, and those helping

:05:44.:05:45.

The President has asked Congress for an initial payment of ?6 billion

:05:46.:05:49.

Our North America Correspondent James Cook is in Houston.

:05:50.:05:52.

What help is the president offering? The president is offering this

:05:53.:05:59.

initial package of ?6 billion worth of help and he is asking Congress to

:06:00.:06:03.

approve that, that should be approved pretty speedily by

:06:04.:06:07.

Congress. It is only the start of the funds the city will need, the

:06:08.:06:13.

mayor of Houston said more than 15 times that amount will eventually be

:06:14.:06:17.

required to help this city recover and all eyes will be on President

:06:18.:06:21.

Trump to see how he is coping with this disaster in presidential terms.

:06:22.:06:28.

He is credited with having done pretty well so far, along with his

:06:29.:06:31.

Federal emergency management agency, the response is said to have been

:06:32.:06:36.

pretty quick, in contrast to the response to hurricane Katrina in

:06:37.:06:43.

2005 which was disastrous. He is visiting this place, Texas and

:06:44.:06:47.

neighbouring Louisiana, where the flooding is continued, chemical

:06:48.:06:53.

plant explosions to the north of the city and also 120,000 people without

:06:54.:06:58.

drinking water further east. James Cook, thanks for joining us.

:06:59.:07:03.

A man has been arrested after a crossbow bolt was fired

:07:04.:07:06.

into the Oval Cricket ground during a match.

:07:07.:07:08.

It happened on Thursday when Surrey were playing Middlesex.

:07:09.:07:11.

Armed police carried out an evacuation of the south london

:07:12.:07:14.

The 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted GBH

:07:15.:07:23.

The first pedestrians have walked across the Queensferry crossing,

:07:24.:07:37.

the new bridge over the Firth of Forth.

:07:38.:07:39.

By the end of the weekend 50,000 people are expected

:07:40.:07:41.

to have made the journey, taking in magnificent views.

:07:42.:07:44.

The bridge, will officially open to traffic next week.

:07:45.:07:46.

Our correspondent Catrina Renton has more.

:07:47.:07:47.

This is something we won't see again, for two days only, 50,000

:07:48.:07:51.

people are getting the chance to walk over the new Queensferry

:07:52.:07:54.

Crossing, chosen in a ballot from almost a quarter of a million people

:07:55.:07:59.

who put their names forward for this moment in history. This is something

:08:00.:08:07.

I sick until his family about. -- Isaac. Yes we have taken lots of

:08:08.:08:12.

photos, if he doesn't remember himself. The Forth road bridge

:08:13.:08:19.

opened in 1964. This is a new crossing for the 21st-century, a

:08:20.:08:24.

chance to sample this feat of engineering, 1.7 miles long and the

:08:25.:08:28.

tallest in the UK. These are the people who have been lucky enough to

:08:29.:08:31.

walk over the bridge, they are taking every opportunity to relish

:08:32.:08:36.

this, this road will soon become a motorway so this is a

:08:37.:08:39.

once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these people to experience the

:08:40.:08:44.

bridge up close and personal. Nine-year-old Woody's family watched

:08:45.:08:47.

the bridge being built as they drove over the old one. There was a

:08:48.:08:57.

massive gap in the middle. And soon we will be seeing so many cars over

:08:58.:09:03.

it. I thought it was done, I was so excited, my heart was pounding. The

:09:04.:09:08.

First Minister joined walkers, taking pictures and soaking up the

:09:09.:09:13.

atmosphere. Such a feeling of pride on the part of everyone I have

:09:14.:09:16.

spoken to, this is a Scottish icon and it will become one of the most

:09:17.:09:19.

recognisable bridges anywhere in the world. Today's memories will be

:09:20.:09:21.

passed down the generations. Motor racing, and Britain's Lewis

:09:22.:09:24.

Hamilton set a new record this afternoon Italy -

:09:25.:09:35.

by securing his 69th pole position, surpassing that

:09:36.:09:37.

of Michael Schumacher. Qualifying was hit by

:09:38.:09:39.

heavy rain at Monza - but the Mercedes driver snatched

:09:40.:09:41.

pole at the last minute. The teenage rookie Lance Stroll -

:09:42.:09:45.

driving for Williams - will start tomorrow's

:09:46.:09:48.

race alongside Hamilton. Championship leader Sebastian Vettel

:09:49.:09:49.

starts sixth for Ferrari, We are back with the

:09:50.:09:51.

:09:52.:09:59.
