Investigators in Egypt say gunmen

behind the country's worst terror

0:00:080:00:11

attack in years were carrying

the flag of so-called Islamic State.

0:00:110:00:15

Egyptian warplanes have launched

raids on suspected militants

0:00:150:00:19

in the Sinai Peninsula

after yesterday's attack on a Mosque

0:00:190:00:21

left more than 300 people dead.

The Democratic Unionists'

Arlene Foster tells Sinn Fein to get

0:00:260:00:30

serious about restoring

power-sharing in Northern Ireland.

0:00:300:00:37

A hundred years after tanks changed

modern warfare, commemorations

0:00:370:00:40

First World War battle.

0:00:400:00:42

And, England survive a late scare

to reach their first

0:00:420:00:45

Rugby League World Cup final

for 22 years.

0:00:450:00:51

Good evening.

0:01:070:01:10

The authorities in Egypt say gunmen

who attacked a Mosque during Friday

0:01:100:01:13

prayers killing more than 300 people

were carrying the flag of

0:01:130:01:18

the so-called Islamic State group.

0:01:180:01:21

Up to 30 men surrounded

the building, opening fire

0:01:210:01:25

on worshippers including children

in the town of Bir Al Abed

0:01:250:01:27

in northern Sinai.

0:01:270:01:28

In response, Egyptian forces have

been carrying out air strikes

0:01:280:01:31

on some militant targets.

0:01:310:01:34

Our Middle East correspondent

Orla Guerin's report contains

0:01:340:01:36

some distressing images.

0:01:360:01:46

Warplanes take to the skies bound

for Sinai. The President has

0:01:470:01:52

promised Egypt will avenge its

martyrs. The Army says air strikes

0:01:520:01:58

destroyed weapons stockpiles and

vehicles used by the militants who

0:01:580:02:01

attacked the Mosque. It's still

stands but is now a monument to

0:02:010:02:06

sorrow. Inside, a trail of

destruction, most of it too graphic

0:02:060:02:11

to show. But this exclusive footage

obtained by the BBC is testament to

0:02:110:02:18

the horrors that unfolded here.

In the general hospital one of the

0:02:180:02:28

young survivors. He is 13, he was

shot twice in the hand and the leg.

0:02:280:02:33

And he is not the only casualty in

his family. In the bed nearby his

0:02:330:02:42

17-year-old cousin, also shot twice,

once in the back. His mother is

0:02:420:02:47

looking to God to punish those who

brought such torment.

0:02:470:02:54

TRANSLATION:

I hope their hearts

will be burned just like ours. The

0:02:540:02:58

women have all become widowed. There

are no men left. They are all gone.

0:02:580:03:04

They are all gone.

Then she leaned

in to whisper. His father, his

0:03:040:03:16

brother, his uncle, his cousin, all

four gone, she said. She didn't want

0:03:160:03:21

him to know.

Among the visitors today a local

0:03:210:03:28

leader of the coptic Church. Now

it's not just Egypt's Christians

0:03:280:03:33

being slaughtered as they pray.

Of

course it's very painful to see some

0:03:330:03:38

people killed like this by

terrorism, something very, very

0:03:380:03:41

painful. We are co-operating with

them, we are asking about their

0:03:410:03:47

health and we will stand together

until the end and Egypt will cross

0:03:470:03:52

this bridge and will be fine.

Here

doctors consoling Akmen who made it

0:03:520:04:05

out alive without children. There

was shooting, he said. People just

0:04:050:04:08

started running, some jumped out of

the window. It's like I fell into a

0:04:080:04:13

coma. God saved some of us, but

others lost their lives.

0:04:130:04:19

The death toll is continuing to

climb here. More than 40 survivors

0:04:190:04:24

from the attack were brought to this

hospital, five have already lost

0:04:240:04:28

their lives. Well-wishers and

relatives have been coming and

0:04:280:04:33

going, trying to offer support as

Egypt struggles to come to terms

0:04:330:04:39

with this attack. Loss on this scale

has brought shock, uncertainty and

0:04:390:04:46

fear. The village of Bir Al Abed,

scene of the attack, has been robbed

0:04:460:04:51

of a quarter of its men. For now, at

least, Egyptians seem united - in

0:04:510:04:58

grief.

It's been a troubled region for many

0:04:580:05:09

areas as what can the Government do

to prevent future attacks?

We saw a

0:05:090:05:12

quick response to the massacre at

the Mosque, we had air strikes, that

0:05:120:05:17

comes from the usual military

playbook. There is no claim of

0:05:170:05:21

responsibility yet but the defence

ministry said they were targeting

0:05:210:05:25

militants linked to the attack. Now

all speculation is still focussing

0:05:250:05:30

on IS, even if this was their work,

they May never claim it because

0:05:300:05:35

there is such a degree of revulsion

following this attack. There's been

0:05:350:05:38

a large-scale military operation

grinding on in the northern Sinai

0:05:380:05:42

peninsula for years. From time to

time, the military here tell us they

0:05:420:05:45

have killed scores of jihadis and

destroyed arms dumps and hide outs

0:05:450:05:50

but yet we see the militants can

still strike and not only strike,

0:05:500:05:54

but as they did yesterday, hit

harder than ever before. Many

0:05:540:05:57

critics would say if the Army wants

to tackle the militants in the north

0:05:570:06:01

it has to deal with the local

tribes, address their grievances

0:06:010:06:06

about lack of employment, lack of

investment, marginalisation, and I

0:06:060:06:09

have to say there is a real sense, a

fear here tonight, that Egypt could

0:06:090:06:14

start to experience the violence

that its neighbours have seen, in

0:06:140:06:17

the words of one Egyptian

commentator, I am afraid that Egypt

0:06:170:06:20

could become another Iraq.

Thank you.

0:06:200:06:28

The leader of the Democratic

Unionist Party, has warned Sinn Fein

0:06:280:06:30

that it needs to get serious,

if the devolution is to be restored

0:06:300:06:33

in Northern Ireland.

0:06:330:06:34

The power-sharing Executive

at Stormont collapsed in January,

0:06:340:06:36

and now the DUP's Arlene Foster has

told her party conference,

0:06:360:06:39

that unless a deal is agreed soon,

Westminster would have to take over

0:06:390:06:42

the running of the government.

0:06:420:06:44

Here's our Ireland

correspondent Chris Buckler.

0:06:440:06:48

The Democratic Unionists are making

the most of the influence

0:06:480:06:54

they have at Downing Street.

0:06:540:06:55

I think actually the

likeness is very good...

0:06:550:06:58

Without a Government at Stormont,

Arlene Foster is no longer

0:06:580:07:01

Northern Ireland's First Minister

but her ten MPs make a formidable

0:07:010:07:03

team because the Conservatives

need their support in crucial

0:07:030:07:06

votes at Westminster.

0:07:060:07:11

It is this party that stands

in the heart of Government,

0:07:110:07:15

not in Northern Ireland,

but across the United Kingdom.

0:07:150:07:17

APPLAUSE.

0:07:170:07:21

But the DUP desperately wants to be

in power at Stormont and that's not

0:07:210:07:25

possible because of the ongoing

divisions between unionists

0:07:250:07:29

and Irish republicans.

0:07:290:07:34

This was the party

conference a year ago.

0:07:340:07:37

Arlene Foster was riding high

but the last 12 months

0:07:370:07:40

have been difficult.

0:07:400:07:42

A scandal over a botched green

energy scheme and deep differences

0:07:420:07:45

with Sinn Fein over culture,

identity and Brexit have left

0:07:450:07:49

Northern Ireland in months

of limbo without Government.

0:07:490:07:53

They complain about Brexit,

all the while refusing to form

0:07:530:07:59

an Executive or take their seats

in parliament and they go

0:07:590:08:04

to conference and glory

in the murder of the IRA.

0:08:040:08:07

APPLAUSE.

0:08:070:08:11

Yet, when you listen to Sinn Fein,

they blame everyone else.

0:08:110:08:16

Now it's time Sinn Fein got serious.

0:08:160:08:19

Despite the flags, cheers

and shouts, this has felt a more

0:08:190:08:24

muted party conference and perhaps

that reflects a deal

0:08:240:08:28

with Sinn Fein is looking unlikely

and that the entire future

0:08:280:08:31

of devolution in Northern Ireland

is deeply uncertain.

0:08:310:08:33

Chris Buckler, BBC news, Belfast.

0:08:330:08:42

They were called the Dreadnoughts

of the Trenches, and changed

0:08:420:08:44

the face of modern warfare.

0:08:440:08:46

Now, 100 years after the first tanks

were deployed in the battle

0:08:460:08:56

of Cambrai in the First World War,

members of the Royal Tank Regiment

0:09:010:09:04

have returned to the French town,

to commemorate those who died.

0:09:040:09:07

Robert Hall joined the crowds

paying their respects.

0:09:070:09:09

On the terraced lawn

of the Cambrai Memorial,

0:09:090:09:10

today's tank crews look back

to a week which cemented the bonds

0:09:100:09:13

of a new military family.

0:09:130:09:14

In November 1917, the early tank

men clambered into over

0:09:140:09:17

400 lumbering machines,

for the largest tank

0:09:170:09:19

attack ever mounted.

0:09:190:09:21

Inside the metal hulls,

crews were overcome

0:09:210:09:23

by heat and exhaust fumes.

0:09:230:09:24

Many tanks broke down.

0:09:240:09:27

One battle-scarred veteran has been

adopted by the French

0:09:270:09:31

village where it fought.

0:09:310:09:33

Tank D51 - Deborah to her crew -

was abandoned and lost.

0:09:330:09:36

Until a local historian

found her back in 1998 and began

0:09:360:09:42

the task of preserving her.

0:09:420:09:44

Today, Deborah is the centrepiece

of a new museum, commemorating her

0:09:440:09:50

part in the battle and the five

crewmen she lost.

0:09:500:09:52

It is simply a love story.

0:09:520:09:54

It's a love story which has started

when first I met a lady who let me

0:09:540:09:58

know that she knows a place

where a tank was buried.

0:09:580:10:03

Deborah's crew are buried nearby,

lost on a day when tanks

0:10:030:10:06

advanced further and faster

than anyone imagined.

0:10:060:10:16

But the bravery of the crews

and the sheer power

0:10:180:10:20

of the tanks came to naught.

0:10:200:10:22

The Allies were once

again driven back.

0:10:220:10:24

Cambrai, however, did mark

the start of a change

0:10:240:10:26

in the way wars were fought.

0:10:260:10:27

The tank had proved its worth.

0:10:270:10:29

A machine that is still evolving,

still a terrifying presence.

0:10:290:10:31

Its birth came at a high cost.

0:10:310:10:35

These ceremonies mark the passing

of the tank men who still lie under

0:10:350:10:38

the rolling farmland they crossed.

0:10:380:10:42

Robert Hall, BBC News,

on the battlefield of Cambrai.

0:10:420:10:52

With all the sport,

here's Reshmin Choutary

0:10:520:10:53

at the BBC Sport Centre.

0:10:530:10:55

England have reached their first

Rugby League World Cup final

0:10:550:10:58

since 1995 after surviving

a dramatic comeback from Tonga.

0:10:580:11:01

They came to within seconds

of letting slip their 20-point lead

0:11:010:11:04

but held on and will now face

Australia for the title.

0:11:040:11:07

Joe Lynskey reports.

0:11:070:11:10

For England, some wins

are worth waiting for.

0:11:100:11:13

After three straight defeats

in World Cup semifinals,

0:11:130:11:18

victory finally came,

but with a scare.

0:11:180:11:20

To get to Brisbane, England had

to cross the Red Sea.

0:11:200:11:28

but.

0:11:280:11:29

England found an early break

through the Pacific wave.

0:11:290:11:32

Wing play in this sport

is about timing and Jermaine

0:11:320:11:34

McGillivray is rarely late.

0:11:340:11:35

A try for him for the tenth

straight England match.

0:11:350:11:44

By the second half they looked safe

and sound.

0:11:440:11:51

But the drama was just beginning.

0:11:510:11:54

Tonga's fans sing hymns

from the stands and now the team had

0:11:540:12:02

The chorus inspired

them to three tries.

0:12:020:12:07

And in the final seconds,

they were on charge for the line.

0:12:070:12:10

Fifita has lost it!

0:12:100:12:11

He has lost it and

England have won it!

0:12:110:12:16

England now await a final 22 years

in the making.

0:12:160:12:23

The latest round of Rugby Union's

autumn internationals have seen

0:12:230:12:25

victories for England and Ireland.

0:12:250:12:26

Scotland won too, convincingly,

over Australia, while Wales played

0:12:260:12:28

host to world champions New Zealand.

0:12:280:12:30

Patrick Gearey reports.

0:12:300:12:31

No wonder they are buying souvenirs.

0:12:310:12:32

Something's stirring in Scottish

rugby, and who better

0:12:320:12:34

to test their new confidence

against than Australia.

0:12:340:12:36

There is heartbreaking history here.

0:12:360:12:39

The Wallabies have a habit

of snatching victory from the Scots

0:12:390:12:42

and there were ominous signs.

0:12:420:12:43

12-10, the Aussies lead.

0:12:430:12:44

It all changed with a charge.

0:12:440:12:47

This was the last act

of Sekope Kepu's match.

0:12:470:12:49

It's a red card, for me.

0:12:490:12:52

Red meant, go, for Scotland,

from the moment that

0:12:520:12:55

Sean Maitland charged over,

they took total control.

0:12:550:12:58

Byron McGuigan was not even

due to be playing this

0:12:580:13:00

match, but scored twice.

0:13:000:13:03

With the extra man, Scotland found

several extra gears.

0:13:030:13:05

Eight tries in all.

0:13:050:13:07

They had never previously beaten

Australia by more than nine points.

0:13:070:13:09

This time, they won by 29.

0:13:090:13:11

They had hopes of defying

history in Cardiff, too.

0:13:110:13:14

Their only fading, flickering

memories of the last time

0:13:140:13:18

Wales beat New Zealand,

back in 1953.

0:13:180:13:22

On a different ground,

and in what seems to be a different

0:13:220:13:25

game to the one the current

All Blacks play.

0:13:250:13:27

A modern combination

of the bombastic and the gymnastic.

0:13:270:13:29

Waisake Naholo scored

twice from two attacks.

0:13:290:13:33

Wales hadn't deserved that, still,

instead of getting mad,

0:13:330:13:35

they very nearly got even.

0:13:350:13:37

Scott Williams brought

them to within a point

0:13:370:13:44

of New Zealand at half-time.

0:13:440:13:45

They trailed by more in '53.

0:13:450:13:47

But, the men in black

are dangerously elusive.

0:13:470:13:48

They score when you

think you are safe.

0:13:480:13:50

Rieko Ioane scored twice.

0:13:500:13:52

That is why the All Blacks

are the world's best,

0:13:520:13:54

and why Wales must keep waiting.

0:13:540:13:55

Patrick Gearey, BBC News.

0:13:550:13:58

England's women put ten tries past

Canada to pull off an autumn series

0:13:580:14:00

whitewash at Twickenham.

0:14:000:14:02

They went into the game

2-0 up in the series

0:14:020:14:04

and finished the match 69-15.

0:14:040:14:10

England have a slim lead over

Australia after day three

0:14:100:14:12

of the first Ashes Test in Brisbane.

0:14:120:14:14

But after a superb century

from captain Steve Smith and two

0:14:140:14:17

quick wickets in the final hour,

the hosts have the upper hand.

0:14:170:14:19

Our sports correspondent

Andy Swiss reports.

0:14:190:14:29

After a balanced start to the Ashes,

was this the day that

0:14:360:14:39

the pendulum finally swung?

0:14:390:14:40

It edged tantalisingly

towards England, Shaun Marsh one

0:14:400:14:42

of a cluster of early wickets,

but they couldn't shift

0:14:420:14:44

Australia's rock.

0:14:440:14:46

Steve Smith had not just a century

but a batting masterclass.

0:14:460:14:53

He guided Australia into the lead.

When the innings finally ended

0:14:530:14:58

Australia were 26 ahead and Smith

141 not out, cheered to the rafters.

0:14:580:15:05

Now for England's openers

to steady the ship - or not.

0:15:050:15:07

A hook from Alastair Cook.

0:15:070:15:12

James Vince next. 17 for two as

Australia's Paceman piled on the

0:15:120:15:17

pressure. A

0:15:170:15:20

A horrible moment for Joe Root,

thankfully unhurt.

0:15:200:15:22

He clung on to the close

but England are up against it.

0:15:220:15:31

Tomorrow will be slightly different.

0:15:310:15:35

A day which began so promisingly

for England has ended with them

0:15:350:15:37

under huge pressure.

0:15:370:15:42

After two days of level

pegging, it's now Australia

0:15:420:15:44

with the upper hand.
