I got out of bed, looked out the

running towards where the crash was.

Good evening. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:06
Investigators are trying
to establish what caused a multiple | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
pile-up in an underpass
in Birmingham this morning, | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
which killed six people and injured
several others, some seriously. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:19
Firefighters who helped remove
bodies from the wreckage, | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
described the scene as "horrific". | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
From Birmingham, our correspondent
Phil Mackie reports. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:28
The immediate aftermath of the
crash. Daybreak strewn across four | 0:01:28 | 0:01:34
lanes. Medics were desperately
trying to save lives, but five | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
people were already dead, and a
sixth was dying. The rest of the | 0:01:37 | 0:01:50
footage is too graphic to show. In
daylight, the scale of what happened | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
became clearer. Three of the people
who died were in this taxi. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
Astonishingly, the man and the woman
in the small car crashed between it | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
and the wall walked away with minor
injuries. The sound of the crash | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
woke many of the people who live
nearby. Got out of bed, looked out | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
the window and just saw loads of
people running towards where the | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
crash was. And then the police
officers telling everyone to get | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
back, get back, so I guess people
will try to help people. They pulled | 0:02:08 | 0:02:13
two people out of the taxi. I didn't
realise it was a taxi until today, | 0:02:13 | 0:02:17
but they will two people out of the
taxi, resuscitating them | 0:02:17 | 0:02:22
straightaway for about 25 minutes.
Dated one into the ambulance come I | 0:02:22 | 0:02:26
didn't see them take the second one
away, so I don't know if they didn't | 0:02:26 | 0:02:30
make it, but it was havoc. The crash
happened on a section of the | 0:02:30 | 0:02:35
Belgrave middleweight, a busy road
in the heart of Birmingham. The | 0:02:35 | 0:02:39
vehicles collided at an entrance to
an underpass at the junction of | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
Bristol Road. Police say the dual
carriageway will probably stay close | 0:02:42 | 0:02:46
to the rest of the day.
Investigators will be looking at a | 0:02:46 | 0:02:50
number of factors. The road was
gritted, but at an hour of close to | 0:02:50 | 0:02:56
one in the morning when the Borges
were closed to freezing, did one of | 0:02:56 | 0:03:01
the cars cross carriageways?
Residents say especially when it is | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
late at night and the road is quiet,
people will come along here at | 0:03:03 | 0:03:07
excess speeds. It will take some
time to unpick the scene and just | 0:03:07 | 0:03:12
understand exactly what has
happened, and it would be unfair for | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
me to speculate at this time. What I
can say is that we are looking to | 0:03:15 | 0:03:20
all sorts of conditions, the road
conditions come we are aware of the | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
road was gritted 5pm last night but
that is just one factor of many we | 0:03:23 | 0:03:28
need to consider. 40 firefighters
helped the survivors at what was | 0:03:28 | 0:03:37
described as a complex scene. It
quickly became apparent there could | 0:03:37 | 0:03:41
not be a lot done to save the lives
of some of those patients | 0:03:41 | 0:03:44
unfortunately. Again, very difficult
circumstances, as you have already | 0:03:44 | 0:03:49
alluded to, very close to Christmas,
so our thoughts are with the | 0:03:49 | 0:03:53
families and friends of those
patients involved. There were a | 0:03:53 | 0:03:58
total of 13 casualties, including
six who died, with six vehicles | 0:03:58 | 0:04:00
damaged. Police described the
accident as harrowing. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:06
Investigations into what caused it
likely to take some time. What is | 0:04:06 | 0:04:12
the latest on the investigation? The
specialist teams who have been here | 0:04:12 | 0:04:17
all day are continuing to carry out
their investigations. You can see | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
they have brought in extra lights to
help them with that. We think in the | 0:04:20 | 0:04:24
next couple of hours they will be
doing that very sensitive and | 0:04:24 | 0:04:29
difficult operation of removing all
of the baby from the scenes so they | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
can try and clear this very busy,
very important main road in time for | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
tomorrow morning was like rush-hour.
As we say, at the moment we still | 0:04:35 | 0:04:39
don't know what caused the accident.
There are lots of theories but | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
clearly it will take some time to
get to the bottom of exactly what | 0:04:42 | 0:04:45
happened in the early hours of this
morning here in central Birmingham. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:50
Police say that they do know the
identities of the six people who | 0:04:50 | 0:04:53
died, but they are still making
contact with all of their families. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:56
The probability is that a lot of
these people are local people, and | 0:04:56 | 0:05:02
it has certainly had an enormous
effect on people in Birmingham | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
today, any of whom have been taking
the social media to express their | 0:05:05 | 0:05:09
condolences. Many thanks, Phil. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:15
Police in Lebanon are
investigating the death | 0:05:15 | 0:05:16
of a British embassy worker. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:19
The BBC has been told the body of
Rebecca Dijks was found on the side | 0:05:19 | 0:05:23
of a motorway yesterday. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:24
Our correspondent Jon Donnison
is here with more. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:29
We have spoken to police sources who
believe that Rebecca was murdered, | 0:05:29 | 0:05:39
she had been strangled and sexually
assaulted. She worked at the | 0:05:39 | 0:05:43
embassy, working at the Department
for International Development. We | 0:05:43 | 0:05:48
have had a statement from the
Foreign Office here in London saying | 0:05:48 | 0:05:53
they are blazing closely with the
Lebanese authorities, providing | 0:05:53 | 0:05:56
support to the family. They have
already issued a statement from | 0:05:56 | 0:06:02
Rebecca Dykes's family who say we
are devastated by the loss of our | 0:06:02 | 0:06:07
beloved Rebecca, doing all we can to
stand what has happened. Thank you. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:15
The Government is considering
extending automatic enrolment | 0:06:15 | 0:06:16
into a workplace pension,
to 18-year-olds, from 2020. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:18
Currently the starting age is 22,
for anyone earning more | 0:06:18 | 0:06:22
than £10,000. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:23
Workers can opt out,
but the change could affect | 0:06:23 | 0:06:25
around 900,000 people. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:26
Joe Lynam reports. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:32
Ollie and Nate are both 21. Ollie on
the left has not yet started saving | 0:06:32 | 0:06:36
for his retirement. It is not really
crossed my mind yet. I moved jobs | 0:06:36 | 0:06:42
quite frequently, tend not to stay
in one place too long. So pensions | 0:06:42 | 0:06:47
sought of bin lower down the list of
things I have been conscious. Nate, | 0:06:47 | 0:06:52
though, has been saving for his
retirement since since he was 16. I | 0:06:52 | 0:06:56
grew up with a family on welfare, so
I was quite aware of the effect is | 0:06:56 | 0:07:02
of being reliant on government money
can have. And how insecure it can be | 0:07:02 | 0:07:08
sometimes. If the Work and Pensions
Secretary David Gauke has his way, | 0:07:08 | 0:07:12
young people like Ollie and Nate
could soon be automatically enrolled | 0:07:12 | 0:07:16
for a pension at their employers.
That, I think, will get more people | 0:07:16 | 0:07:20
into the habit of saving. It will
mean younger people will be saving | 0:07:20 | 0:07:24
for those extra years, so that is
significant when it comes to their | 0:07:24 | 0:07:28
retirement. At the moment, only
those aged 22 are automatically | 0:07:28 | 0:07:33
included in a pension scheme by
their employers, but the government | 0:07:33 | 0:07:37
wants that age lowered to 18. Soon,
8% of our salaries will be going | 0:07:37 | 0:07:42
into a pension pot, something that
employers are worried about. I think | 0:07:42 | 0:07:46
what the government needs to bear in
mind however is how much of the cost | 0:07:46 | 0:07:49
of that is going to be falling on
employers in the future, because | 0:07:49 | 0:07:54
already the cost for employers is on
course to travel by 2019. Today's | 0:07:54 | 0:07:59
announcement means the cost to
employers will be even higher than | 0:07:59 | 0:08:01
that. To 18 or even 21-year-olds,
retirement must seem a very long way | 0:08:01 | 0:08:08
off, especially if they don't earn
much, but if this plan proceeds, it | 0:08:08 | 0:08:12
could help younger people depending
on the state in decades to come. Joe | 0:08:12 | 0:08:19
Lynam, BBC News. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:21
In South Africa, thousands
of delegates from the ruling ANC | 0:08:21 | 0:08:23
party, are preparing to elect
a new leader. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:25
The vote is expected to be close
between the two candidates vying | 0:08:25 | 0:08:28
to replace President Jacob Zuma. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:29
His time in office has been marked
by deep divisions within the ANC. | 0:08:29 | 0:08:32
Our Africa Editor, Fergal Keane
is in Johannesburg. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:39
Fergal, what are the chances of the
new leader uniting, and even | 0:08:39 | 0:08:44
reinvigorating the ANC? Well, given
the division that has existed in the | 0:08:44 | 0:08:53
weeks leading up to this Conference
and the divisions I have seen myself | 0:08:53 | 0:08:56
on the Conference floor in the last
hour, supporters of Cyril Ramaphosa, | 0:08:56 | 0:09:10
who say he will clear out
corruption, and Nkoszana | 0:09:10 | 0:09:16
Dlamini-Zuma, the wife of Jacob
Zuma, and a significant politician | 0:09:16 | 0:09:20
in her own right. It is a huge task
whoever comes in, first ball in | 0:09:20 | 0:09:25
trying to unite this party, which
has been ridden by infighting and | 0:09:25 | 0:09:30
factionalism. If they managed to
unite the ANC and lead it to | 0:09:30 | 0:09:34
elections in 2019, there is a huge
task to persuade the majority of | 0:09:34 | 0:09:38
South African voters that the ANC
has turned its back on the age of | 0:09:38 | 0:09:43
corruption, the age of cronyism, of
what is called state capture, where | 0:09:43 | 0:09:47
cronies of President Zuma allegedly
in return for kickbacks were given | 0:09:47 | 0:09:53
chunks of state enterprise, vast
sums in tax payers money. It is a | 0:09:53 | 0:09:57
big job to persuade South Africans
and I spent a bit of time in the | 0:09:57 | 0:10:00
last week going round townships and
informal settlements there, | 0:10:00 | 0:10:03
listening to people, and that is
their major concern. That will | 0:10:03 | 0:10:07
define I think whether the ANC
continues to be the dominant force | 0:10:07 | 0:10:11
in this country. We should know by
around 45 o'clock in the morning, | 0:10:11 | 0:10:16
just as the dawn comes up here in
Johannesburg. Fergal Kean, live in | 0:10:16 | 0:10:21

and wounded more than 50 others. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:29

16-year-old Harry Cochrane opened

England's battle to save the Ashes
will go into the final day | 0:11:29 | 0:11:32
of the third cricket Test in Perth,
after rain interrupted play. | 0:11:32 | 0:11:35
But needing at least
a draw to save the series, | 0:11:35 | 0:11:37
England are still 127 runs short
of Australia's first innings total, | 0:11:37 | 0:11:40
with four wickets down. | 0:11:40 | 0:11:41
Andy Swiss reports. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:47
A day when English cricket was
rescued by some very English | 0:11:47 | 0:11:51
weather, but for how long? It had
started out a damage limitation | 0:11:51 | 0:11:56
exercise to restrict Australia's
gargantuan total. The video umpire | 0:11:56 | 0:12:00
helped, finally dislodged --
dislodging Steve Smith. But some | 0:12:00 | 0:12:07
hefty lower order hitting took
Australia's total way out of sight. | 0:12:07 | 0:12:12
For England's batsmen, it was now
all about survival. Bode. Josh | 0:12:12 | 0:12:18
Hazlewood's brilliance did for
Alastair Cook and worse was to | 0:12:18 | 0:12:20
follow. Joe Root, the captain,
remember, what was he thinking? But | 0:12:20 | 0:12:25
as his team-mates fell around him,
James Vince stood tall, a fluent 50 | 0:12:25 | 0:12:30
starting a recovery until the ball
of this, or perhaps any summer, | 0:12:30 | 0:12:34
Mitchell Starc, the stumped
destroyer, just watched this zigzag | 0:12:34 | 0:12:38
of the pitch at 90 mph. Unplayable.
Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow | 0:12:38 | 0:12:44
helped calm the nerves with an
unbeaten partnership, until a deluge | 0:12:44 | 0:12:48
sparked delight among the Barmy
Army. But their team need something | 0:12:48 | 0:12:51
very special. More rain is forecast
but only that and some determined | 0:12:51 | 0:12:56
batting can save England's hopes.

announced in Liverpool. | 0:13:04 | 0:13:05

here, just don't mention the Ashes. | 0:13:29 | 0:13:33
This is the award that doesn't come
from a specific sporting achievement | 0:13:33 | 0:13:38
