Good afternoon.

0:00:200:00:21

Afghan special forces have

ended a siege in a luxury

0:00:210:00:24

hotel in the capital,

Kabul, 12 hours after

0:00:240:00:28

it was stormed by gunmen.

0:00:280:00:29

Six civilians - five Afghans

and one foreign woman -

0:00:290:00:32

were killed,

along with all the militants.

0:00:320:00:34

More than 150 people

were rescued from the hotel

0:00:340:00:37

by the security forces.

0:00:370:00:39

The Taliban says it

carried out the attack.

0:00:390:00:42

Our correspondent, Zia Shahreyar,

reports from Kabul.

0:00:420:00:50

The final moments of a fight that

had lasted all night.

0:00:510:00:57

Gunfire and explosions,

as Afghan special forces

0:00:570:00:59

battled to regain control

of the Intercontinental Hotel.

0:00:590:01:03

One soldier throws a grenade.

0:01:030:01:05

He moves away.

0:01:050:01:06

Then the explosion.

0:01:060:01:09

The room is soon on fire -

evidence of the struggle

0:01:130:01:16

that had taken place.

0:01:160:01:19

The Afghan national flag

waving from the roof -

0:01:190:01:21

proof that the building

has been retaken.

0:01:210:01:25

More than 150 people,

including some foreigners,

0:01:250:01:29

were inside yesterday evening,

when gunmen burst

0:01:290:01:31

in and opened fire.

0:01:310:01:35

There were old people and children

inside the hotel's rooms,

0:01:350:01:38

and the attackers were knocking

on the door of each room,

0:01:380:01:41

trying to reach their targets.

0:01:410:01:43

They killed ordinary

people and officials.

0:01:430:01:46

They were also targeting foreigners.

0:01:460:01:52

These images, filmed by local TV,

show people escaping by climbing

0:01:520:01:55

down bed sheets that they'd

tied to balconies.

0:01:550:01:58

This telecoms engineer fell

from the sixth floor

0:01:580:02:02

as he tried to get away.

0:02:020:02:08

TRANSLATION:

When the sixth floor

caught fire this morning,

0:02:080:02:10

my roommate told me,

"Either escape or burn."

0:02:100:02:13

I got a bed sheet and tied

it on to the balcony.

0:02:130:02:19

I tried to come down,

but I was heavy and my arms

0:02:190:02:22

were not strong enough.

0:02:220:02:23

I fell, and injured

my shoulder and leg.

0:02:230:02:29

The Afghan security forces were

deployed to the area, and place

0:02:350:02:40

themselves on different -- the

gunmen place themselves on different

0:02:400:02:48

floors of the hotel and opened fire

on the guests. Six people, including

0:02:480:02:54

one foreign citizen, were killed in

this attack. Now the Interior

0:02:540:02:59

Ministry assessment team is inside

the hotel, trying to find out and

0:02:590:03:03

clear all the different floors of

the hotel.

0:03:030:03:07

The hotel is one of Kabul's

best-known landmarks.

0:03:070:03:09

It has high levels of security

because it's used by politicians

0:03:090:03:12

and foreign visitors.

0:03:120:03:13

It was last attacked

by the Taliban seven years ago.

0:03:130:03:15

This sustained and complex assault

will prompt urgent questions

0:03:150:03:18

as to how the gunmen got through.

0:03:180:03:20

Tens of thousands of people have

taken to the streets in cities

0:03:210:03:24

across America for the second

Women's March, with many

0:03:240:03:26

protesting against President

Trump's presidency.

0:03:260:03:29

The main march will be held

in Las Vegas later on today.

0:03:290:03:32

A rally is also taking place

in London, as Simon Jones reports.

0:03:320:03:40

What time is it?

"Time's up".

Hundreds gathered outside Downing

0:03:440:03:51

Street determined to make their

voices heard. The message, time's up

0:03:510:03:56

for the sexual harassment and abuse

of women.

It's time to speak out

0:03:560:04:03

against violence against all women

across the world.

We are still

0:04:030:04:07

getting paid way more than women,

and it's completely unfair.

Today's

0:04:070:04:12

noisy events are taking place a year

to the day that tens of thousands of

0:04:120:04:16

women took to the streets to protest

against President Trump's first day

0:04:160:04:21

in office. A lot here say a lot has

changed over the past 12 months, but

0:04:210:04:27

there's still a lot to do. The Trump

presidency is very much the focus of

0:04:270:04:34

marches that have already been held

in the US. Many repeated the

0:04:340:04:38

slogan," build bridges, not wars".

I'm glad that the momentum has been

0:04:380:04:47

kept up and women's voices are being

heard.

I want to resist the racism

0:04:470:04:51

that is happening in our country,

especially with the

0:04:510:04:56

commander-in-chief.

Although the

crowds in London are predominately

0:04:560:05:00

women, the organisers say men are

also welcome. They say they are not

0:05:000:05:04

setting out to demonise the entire

male population, but are looking for

0:05:040:05:08

everyone to play their part in

bringing about change.

0:05:080:05:12

The Ukip leader, Henry Bolton, has

insisted he will not quit his job.

0:05:120:05:15

Mr Bolton says it's not right

for the party's ruling body

0:05:150:05:17

to judge him on his personal life.

0:05:170:05:19

He's expected to face a vote of

no confidence at an emergency

0:05:190:05:22

meeting later today,

after offensive texts,

0:05:220:05:24

sent by his former girlfriend,

emerged last week.

0:05:240:05:30

A man has been arrested

after an eight-year-old girl

0:05:300:05:33

was stabbbed to death

in the West Midlands.

0:05:330:05:35

Police say they're treating it

as a domestic incident,

0:05:350:05:37

and aren't looking for anyone else.

0:05:370:05:40

Liz Copper is in Walsall

for us this lunchtime.

0:05:400:05:47

What are the police saying, Liz?

Police say they were called to this

0:05:470:05:54

bungalow around 9:15pm yesterday.

When they arrived they found that

0:05:540:05:59

eight-year-old girl with serious

injuries. She was taken to hospital,

0:05:590:06:04

unfortunately nothing could be done

to save her life and she died a

0:06:040:06:08

short time later. A 54-year-old man

was also taken to hospital. He has a

0:06:080:06:15

stab injury to his stomach. His

condition is described as stable.

0:06:150:06:20

Police say they will be questioning

him in due course. West Midlands

0:06:200:06:24

Police have said they are treating

this

0:06:240:06:32

as a domestic incident, and as such

they are not looking for anyone else

0:06:380:06:41

in connection with the little girl's

death.

Lives, thank you.

0:06:410:06:45

Two climbers have been airlifted

to safety in the highlands

0:06:450:06:47

after becoming stuck on a ridge.

0:06:470:06:48

The pair were winched

to safety from 3,000 feet up

0:06:480:06:51

the mountain in Glencoe.

0:06:510:06:52

They'd first raised

the alarm on Friday,

0:06:520:06:54

but the poor weather meant

they couldn't be rescued

0:06:540:06:56

until yesterday morning.

0:06:560:06:57

People with hidden disabilities

in England could soon be entitled

0:06:570:06:59

to blue badge parking permits

under government plans.

0:06:590:07:01

The Department for Transport said

the change would make it easier

0:07:010:07:04

for those with conditions such

as autism to access

0:07:040:07:06

services they need.

0:07:060:07:08

Helena Lee has the story.

0:07:080:07:10

The Blue Badge scheme was first

introduced in England in the 1970s.

0:07:100:07:14

Today, around 2.4 million people

with disabilities have one.

0:07:140:07:20

It allows them to park

free of charge on roads,

0:07:200:07:23

and normally without a time limit.

0:07:230:07:26

The Government is now proposing

to extend the scheme.

0:07:260:07:29

It wants people with hidden

disabilities and conditions

0:07:290:07:32

like autism and dementia

to be able to qualify for

0:07:320:07:36

a blue badge, so they too can

enjoy the freedom to get out

0:07:360:07:39

where and when they want.

0:07:390:07:41

For many parents, they tell us that

sometimes they don't want to go out.

0:07:410:07:44

They don't want to take

their autistic son or daughter

0:07:440:07:47

out to the shops, out to schools

and services and other places,

0:07:470:07:51

because they are worried

about what might happen.

0:07:510:07:53

But if they can park much closer

to their destination,

0:07:530:07:56

then they can easily take someone

away if there is an issue

0:07:560:07:59

or if there are difficulties

when they are out and about.

0:07:590:08:03

The Department for Transport says

only some councils recognise hidden

0:08:030:08:06

disabilities under the current

scheme, because they interpret

0:08:060:08:09

the existing rules differently.

0:08:090:08:13

The proposals would be the biggest

change to the scheme

0:08:130:08:17

since it was first introduced.

0:08:170:08:19

The plans will now go

through an eight-week

0:08:190:08:21

public consultation.

0:08:210:08:23

Helena Lee, BBC News.

0:08:230:08:27

Tennis, and Kyle Edmund

has reached his first

0:08:270:08:29

Grand Slam quarter final.

0:08:290:08:32

The British number two beat

the Italian, Andreas Seppi,

0:08:320:08:35

in four sets at the Australian Open

in Melbourne.

0:08:350:08:38

Nick Parrott reports.

0:08:380:08:41

Kyle Edmund could barely stand

after his last match in Melbourne.

0:08:410:08:45

Now he's reached greater

heights than ever before.

0:08:450:08:49

The mercury was at a merciful 26

degrees, but early on,

0:08:490:08:52

it looked like Andreas Seppi

could prove too hot to handle.

0:08:520:08:56

27 places separate them

in the world rankings.

0:08:560:08:59

On court, it was much closer,

with the Italian taking

0:08:590:09:02

the first set on a tie-break.

0:09:020:09:05

At 33, Seppi has a decade's

experience on Edmund, and,

0:09:050:09:09

at times, it showed.

0:09:090:09:12

The Briton was broken first,

but a change of footwear led

0:09:120:09:15

to a change in fortunes,

as he went on to level the match.

0:09:150:09:20

Winning five games in a row saw

Edmund grow in confidence

0:09:200:09:23

and Seppi's stubborn

resistance drain away.

0:09:230:09:28

It took almost three hours

to set up the biggest

0:09:280:09:31

match of his career,

but Edmund isn't

0:09:310:09:32

getting carried away.

0:09:320:09:36

You know, I have to believe

I'm going to win, and believe

0:09:360:09:39

in my game and stuff,

so that's the way I approached it,

0:09:390:09:42

one match at a time,

and I'll continue to do that.

0:09:420:09:45

Whatever happens next,

Edmund will climb the rankings

0:09:450:09:47

and give hope that Britain has found

a successor to Andy Murray.
