The Prime Minister calls on the UK

and the EU to continue to cooperate

0:00:110:00:14

on security after Brexit.

0:00:140:00:15

Theresa May said a new treaty

on foreign and defence policy should

0:00:150:00:18

be effective by next year.

0:00:180:00:19

The challenge for all of us today

is finding the way to work together

0:00:190:00:22

through a deep and special

partnership between

0:00:220:00:24

the UK and the EU.

0:00:240:00:28

No more at the centre of his party -

Henry Bolton is ousted

0:00:280:00:31

as leader of UKIP.

0:00:310:00:39

Lizzy Yarnold, she goes to the

front, and how!

0:00:390:00:42

Lizzy Yarnold leads the way,

on a historic day for Team GB

0:00:420:00:45

at the Winter Olympics.

0:00:450:00:46

And the Olympic scandal

of 1994 turned into

0:00:460:00:48

a BAFTA nominated biopic.

0:00:480:00:56

Good evening.

0:01:120:01:13

The Prime Minister has called

for a new security treaty

0:01:130:01:17

with the European Union

after Brexit, warning that

0:01:170:01:19

lives could be at risk

without full co-operation.

0:01:190:01:21

In a speech in Germany,

Theresa May said new arrangements

0:01:210:01:24

over working together should be

effective by next year.

0:01:240:01:29

The President of the European

Commission, Jean Claude Juncker,

0:01:290:01:31

agreed that a post-Brexit security

alliance was necessary -

0:01:310:01:33

but said it should be negotiated

separately from other issues,

0:01:330:01:35

such as trade.

0:01:350:01:36

Our political correspondent

Vicki Young reports from Munich.

0:01:360:01:43

In defence and security the UK

is a significant player.

0:01:430:01:46

The Prime Minister hopes that

will get her a special deal.

0:01:460:01:49

She arrived in Munich keen to lay

out Britain's contribution.

0:01:490:01:51

Generous spending on defence

and expertise it wants

0:01:510:01:54

to share even after Brexit.

0:01:540:01:58

Theresa May urged the EU to take

a practical approach.

0:01:580:02:04

This cannot be a time when any of us

allow competition between partners,

0:02:040:02:07

rigid institutional restrictions

or deep-seated ideology

0:02:070:02:10

to inhibit our cooperation

and jeopardise the security

0:02:100:02:12

of our citizens.

0:02:120:02:18

She's calling for a new security

treaty so that the close

0:02:180:02:21

partnership can continue.

0:02:210:02:22

Failure to agree one would have

damaging consequences, she said.

0:02:220:02:27

We must do whatever is most

practical and pragmatic

0:02:270:02:29

in ensuring our collective security.

0:02:290:02:32

Those who threaten our security

would like nothing more

0:02:320:02:34

than to see us fractured.

0:02:340:02:40

Some listening to this

were left bewildered.

0:02:400:02:46

The Brexit decision from the point

of view of us inside the EU

0:02:460:02:49

is extremely regrettable.

0:02:490:02:54

Things would be so much

easier if you stayed.

0:02:540:02:57

So here comes the question...

0:02:570:03:04

APPLAUSE Mrs May pointed out that

Brexit was a democratic decision

0:03:040:03:07

politicians should respect.

0:03:070:03:10

One senior Brussels

figure seemed to agree.

0:03:100:03:15

The commission President Jean-Claude

Junker said the EU wasn't at war

0:03:150:03:18

with the UK and didn't want to take

revenge on the British people.

0:03:180:03:22

He said the security bridge

would be maintained,

0:03:220:03:24

but you couldn't mix it up

with other issues.

0:03:240:03:26

Conservative MPs attending

the conference here believe

0:03:260:03:28

the speech is a good starting

point for talks.

0:03:280:03:33

We've got to start getting

into the detail of this.

0:03:330:03:36

One thing we can do is improve our

offer around defence and security,

0:03:360:03:39

and I do think we need to have

another look in the UK as to how

0:03:390:03:43

we prioritise security.

0:03:430:03:44

So it's a pretty familiar

message from Theresa May.

0:03:440:03:46

The UK is leaving the European Union

but that doesn't mean close

0:03:460:03:49

cooperation needs to end.

0:03:490:03:55

And it's a blunt message, too,

saying to EU leaders,

0:03:550:04:00

don't let your ideology get

in the way of the safety

0:04:000:04:02

of our citizens.

0:04:020:04:06

The government hopes today's speech

will show it's acting responsibly,

0:04:060:04:09

not wanting to drag the important

issue of security into fraught

0:04:090:04:11

Brexit negotiations.

0:04:110:04:12

Vicki Young, BBC News, Munich.

0:04:120:04:19

Our political correspondent

Susana Mendonca is here.

0:04:190:04:21

We've had two big

0:04:210:04:22

speeches this week on Brexit -

are we any clearer

0:04:220:04:24

on the way forward?

0:04:240:04:25

Well I think we'd still a long way

to go before we know what Brexit

0:04:250:04:30

going to look like but if you look

at the speech as we've had so far

0:04:300:04:33

they seem to be about building

bridges. Theresa May talking about

0:04:330:04:36

that cooperation, unconditional

cooperation between Britain and the

0:04:360:04:40

EU. Certainly the EU Commission

president made it clear that

0:04:400:04:45

cooperation on security doesn't mean

cooperation on trade. But it went

0:04:450:04:49

down well with the Europeans, went

down well with her Brexiteers. When

0:04:490:04:52

you look at Boris Johnson's speech

last week he was talking about

0:04:520:04:56

bringing together Remainers and

Brexiteers and looking at the

0:04:560:04:58

positives but there wasn't much in

the way of substance. In terms of

0:04:580:05:01

what we'll get over the next week we

understand there will be a series of

0:05:010:05:04

speeches in this road to Brexit

theme we're getting from number ten.

0:05:040:05:09

We'll have speeches from David

Davis, we understand David Lidington

0:05:090:05:12

will give a speech where he talks

about devolution. Something from

0:05:120:05:16

Liam Fox, also talking about the

positives. We are expecting a lot of

0:05:160:05:21

speeches, whether or not we get the

detail we are after remains to be

0:05:210:05:24

seen.

Thank you.

0:05:240:05:27

Ukip has voted to remove its leader,

Henry Bolton, following controversy

0:05:270:05:29

over racist messages sent

by his former partner

0:05:290:05:31

about Prince Harry's

fiancee, Meghan Markle.

0:05:310:05:37

Mr Bolton had refused to stand down

- but today over 60% of members

0:05:370:05:40

backed a motion of no

confidence in him.

0:05:400:05:42

The party is now looking

for its fifth leader in 18 months -

0:05:420:05:45

as our political correspondent

Alex Forsyth reports.

0:05:450:05:50

Therefore Henry Bolton has been

removed by the democratic decision

0:05:500:05:53

of the membership...

0:05:530:05:58

And with that, Ukip bid farewell

to another short-lived leader.

0:05:580:06:00

Henry Bolton had put his fate

in the hands of the party

0:06:000:06:03

members and five months

after they elected him

0:06:030:06:05

they voted him out.

0:06:050:06:12

You don't embark on something

like this, obviously,

0:06:120:06:17

hoping to win through,

0:06:170:06:20

and then find that you don't win

through, without feeling, you know,

0:06:200:06:23

some disappointment, of course.

0:06:230:06:24

But hey, you know, take it

on the chin and move on.

0:06:240:06:27

It was his relationship

with Jo Marney that led

0:06:270:06:29

to questions over his future.

0:06:290:06:34

She sent a series of offensive

messages leading Ukip's ruling

0:06:340:06:36

body to demand he quit.

0:06:360:06:39

Today, party members voted

and they endorsed that decision.

0:06:390:06:43

So the MEP, Gerard Batten,

has taken over temporarily.

0:06:430:06:46

Before the fourth leadership

contest in 18 months.

0:06:460:06:48

Costly for a cash-strapped party.

0:06:480:06:51

Ukip has to continue

because we are the only opposition.

0:06:510:06:57

This party was riding high

after the Brexit referendum,

0:06:570:07:01

but since then it's been in turmoil,

struggling for direction

0:07:010:07:03

and leadership.

0:07:030:07:04

And there is a risk today's result

could only deepen divisions.

0:07:040:07:09

I think it's a big mistake

and I think there are very few

0:07:090:07:12

people within the party

who potentially could be leader.

0:07:120:07:18

Can Ukip survive another

leadership contest now?

0:07:180:07:21

Of course it can, of course it can.

0:07:210:07:24

We're like, we're like vampires,

you stake us, we come back to life,

0:07:240:07:27

you can't get rid of us,

I'm sorry.

0:07:270:07:29

Plenty here believe

in Ukip's future, its role

0:07:290:07:30

in the Brexit debate.

0:07:300:07:34

But many fear the turmoil at the top

means it will never again be

0:07:340:07:37

the influential force it once was.

0:07:370:07:38

Alex Forsyth, BBC News, Birmingham.

0:07:380:07:41

Team GB is celebrating

its most successful day

0:07:410:07:43

in Winter Olympic history.

0:07:430:07:49

Lizzy Yarnold won Gold

in the women's skeleton -

0:07:490:07:51

becoming the first Briton ever

to retain a Winter Olympic title.

0:07:510:07:54

There was a Bronze too in the event

- for her team-mate Laura Deas,

0:07:540:07:58

and a Bronze in the ski slopestyle

for Izzy Atkin.

0:07:580:08:00

David Ornstein reports

from Pyeongchang.

0:08:000:08:03

Guiding Great Britain

to unprecedented glory,

0:08:030:08:05

Lizzy Yarnold and Laura Deas turning

dreams into reality,

0:08:050:08:07

rewriting the record books.

0:08:070:08:13

COMMENTATOR:

Lizzy Yarnold next,

the Olympic champion,

0:08:130:08:17

can she make history

and win it again?

0:08:170:08:20

Yarnold went into her final

slide in second place,

0:08:200:08:23

but conjured an imperious display,

and the fastest time any woman has

0:08:230:08:26

produced on this track,

to enter sporting folklore.

0:08:260:08:30

COMMENTATOR:

That is a gold medal

winning run, I'm sure of it.

0:08:300:08:34

So it's gold for Lizzy Yarnold.

0:08:340:08:37

She's defended her title

and become the most decorated

0:08:370:08:39

British Winter Olympian in history.

0:08:390:08:43

She was joined on the podium

by team-mate Laura Deas.

0:08:430:08:45

The pair rounding off the most

successful day their nation has ever

0:08:450:08:48

seen at a Winter Games.

0:08:480:08:50

As Yarnold jumped into the crowd

to join the celebrations,

0:08:500:08:52

how did she feel?

0:08:520:08:55

I feel exhausted!

0:08:550:08:59

Now a back-to-back champion,

the 29-year-old couldn't

0:08:590:09:01

hide her delight.

0:09:010:09:04

I'm just so relieved

that I've done the race,

0:09:040:09:06

been consistent, and Laura

and I are on the podium together.

0:09:060:09:11

For her parents, Judith and Clive,

another moment to savour.

0:09:110:09:16

From the mixed season that she's

had, to come and win

0:09:160:09:18

the gold medal here today -

and we have a bronze medal

0:09:180:09:20

as well through Laura -

is absolutely mind-boggling.

0:09:200:09:26

The success story was started

by the youngest member of Team GB,

0:09:260:09:29

19-year-old Izzy Atkin

saving her best until last to take

0:09:290:09:32

bronze in the slopestyle and become

Britain's first official

0:09:320:09:34

Olympic skiing medallist.

0:09:340:09:41

COMMENTATOR:

Great Britain's Izzy

Atkin takes a bronze!

0:09:410:09:43

Mum and dad, Winnie and Mike,

overcome with joy.

0:09:430:09:47

I'm still kind of speechless.

0:09:470:09:48

I can't...

0:09:480:09:49

I'm really excited, really happy.

0:09:490:09:51

I'm stoked with how I skied and also

stoked to win the bronze.

0:09:510:09:57

The day was however tinged

with disappointment

0:09:570:10:00

as Elise Christie crashed out

of the 1500 metres short track speed

0:10:000:10:03

skating and was later disqualified.

0:10:030:10:06

COMMENTATOR:

Christie has crashed

again now in the semifinal!

0:10:060:10:09

She went to hospital as a precaution

but was given the all clear and may

0:10:090:10:13

yet race in the 1000 metres

as she bids to avoid

0:10:130:10:15

a repeat of her nightmare

in Sochi four years ago.

0:10:150:10:23

Bronze medallist, Great Britain!

0:10:270:10:30

But that will do little to dampen

the British euphoria

0:10:300:10:32

as they delivered on snow and ice

a Super Saturday to live

0:10:320:10:35

long in the memory.

0:10:350:10:36

David Ornstein, BBC

News, in Pyeongchang.

0:10:360:10:40

Survivors of the shooting

at a Florida school this week,

0:10:400:10:43

which left 17 people dead,

have been taking part in a rally

0:10:430:10:46

demanding tighter gun control laws.

0:10:460:10:52

Protestors in Fort Lauderdale

chanted 'no more guns'

0:10:520:10:54

and attacked politicians.

0:10:540:10:55

It comes as pressure mounts

on the FBI over the agency's failure

0:10:550:10:58

to act on a tip-off that

Nikolas Cruz, the suspected gunman,

0:10:580:11:01

might carry out an attack.

0:11:010:11:02

A court in Pakistan has sentenced

a man to death for the murder

0:11:020:11:07

and rape of a 6-year-old girl.

0:11:070:11:08

Zainab Ansari's body was found

on a rubbish dump in the city

0:11:080:11:11

of Kasoor in January.

0:11:110:11:14

24-year-old Imran Ali confessed

to the killing and to attacks

0:11:140:11:16

on other young girls.

0:11:160:11:17

Secunder Kermani reports.

0:11:170:11:21

These are the last images

of 6-year-old Zainab alive,

0:11:210:11:29

being led away by the hand by

the man who would rape and kill her.

0:11:300:11:34

Her body was found on a rubbish

dump five days later.

0:11:340:11:37

Zainab's attacker was

24-year-old Imran Ali,

0:11:370:11:38

an acquaintance of her family.

0:11:380:11:39

He was identified on the

basis of DNA evidence.

0:11:390:11:43

After a trial lasting

just four days, today

0:11:430:11:45

he was sentenced to death.

0:11:450:11:49

Today the court has

announced the judgment.

0:11:490:11:51

He has been convicted on four

different counts and has

0:11:510:11:54

been sentenced to death.

0:11:540:11:59

The discovery of Zainab's body

led to angry protests

0:11:590:12:01

in her hometown Kasoor.

0:12:010:12:05

At the trial, her killer admitted

to having assaulted or murdered

0:12:050:12:07

eight other young girls here over

the past two years.

0:12:070:12:10

Many believe he could have

been stopped sooner.

0:12:100:12:14

Zainab's family, though,

welcomed today's verdict.

0:12:140:12:18

TRANSLATION:

We are satisfied

with this verdict of the death

0:12:180:12:21

sentence, but we also want for him

to be punished publicly.

0:12:210:12:26

The murder of Zainab has

sparked unprecedented

0:12:260:12:29

discussion of child abuse,

normally a taboo topic in Pakistan.

0:12:290:12:34

But campaigners believe more needs

to be done to educate both children

0:12:340:12:37

and parents about the dangers,

and to ensure the authorities

0:12:370:12:39

properly investigate cases.

0:12:390:12:43

The families of these victims now

have some semblance of justice.

0:12:430:12:45

But, for many, it may feel

too little too late.

0:12:450:12:51

Secunder Kermani,

BBC News, Islamabad.

0:12:510:12:58

A mini-earthquake has shaken Wales

and parts of west England.

0:12:580:13:00

You can see the large red lines here

from The British Geological Survey -

0:13:000:13:03

they show the tremor

which was a magnitude of 4.4.

0:13:030:13:07

The epicentre was around 12 miles

outside Swansea and tremors

0:13:070:13:09

could be felt as far

as Chester and Bournemouth.

0:13:090:13:17

Tremors on this scale

are only felt in the UK

0:13:170:13:19

every two to three years.

0:13:190:13:21

While all eyes are focused on this

year's Winter Olympics,

0:13:210:13:23

one of the most hotly-tipped films

for tomorrow night's

0:13:230:13:25

BAFTA awards is I, Tonya,

based on events linked

0:13:250:13:27

to the Winter Olympics of 1994.

0:13:270:13:31

It's a biopic about the American

figure skater Tonya Harding,

0:13:310:13:33

who became notorious for her link

to an attack on a fellow skater.

0:13:330:13:38

Margot Robbie plays

the disgraced Tonya,

0:13:380:13:41

and Allison Janney her mother -

and both have received

0:13:410:13:43

BAFTA nominations.

0:13:430:13:44

Our Arts Editor Will Gompertz

has been to meet them.

0:13:440:13:49

I was the best figure skater

in the world at one point in time.

0:13:490:13:52

4.8.

0:13:520:13:53

How do I get a fair shot here?

0:13:530:13:56

It wasn't about telling

the Tonya Harding story.

0:13:560:13:57

The haters always say,

Tonya, tell the truth.

0:13:570:14:00

We have all these unreliable

narrators telling completely

0:14:000:14:02

contradictory versions

of the exact same event.

0:14:020:14:06

I mean come on, what kind

of friggin' person bashes

0:14:060:14:12

in their friend's knee?

0:14:120:14:14

The juxtaposition of everyone's

0:14:140:14:15

different point of view and story

is where the dark comedy comes in.

0:14:150:14:22

Where you see my character

throw a knife at Tonya.

0:14:220:14:26

And then you cut to me saying,

you know, what family doesn't

0:14:260:14:29

have their ups and downs?

0:14:290:14:30

I made you a champion!

0:14:300:14:31

Knowing you'd hate me for it.

0:14:310:14:33

That's the sacrifice a mother makes.

0:14:330:14:36

I wish I had a mother

like me instead of nice.

0:14:360:14:38

You cursed me.

0:14:380:14:41

In the movie, you assault your

daughter on more than one occasion,

0:14:410:14:44

and yet her mother in real life

denies it happening.

0:14:440:14:49

I told her side of

the story very well.

0:14:490:14:52

I think I, I understood, I had

to make her a three-dimensional

0:14:520:14:54

character, she was just a monster.

0:14:540:14:57

character, she wasn't

just a monster.

0:14:570:14:59

How old are you honey?

0:14:590:15:00

She's a soft four.

0:15:000:15:05

Having been a figure skater myself,

I know how expensive

0:15:050:15:12

it is to have custom skates

and have the skating costumes.

0:15:120:15:14

I know what it took for my parents

to get up at five in the morning.

0:15:140:15:18

I felt like I could tell

her side of the story.

0:15:180:15:21

What can you tell us

about Tonya Harding?

0:15:210:15:23

I don't know a Tonya Harding.

0:15:230:15:24

Aren't you her bodyguard?

0:15:240:15:26

As a young producer

and actor in the business,

0:15:260:15:28

do you think the game

is still rigged against women?

0:15:280:15:35

There's far more female driven

content, female lead films now

0:15:350:15:37

than even when I started,

and I haven't even been

0:15:370:15:39

doing it this long.

0:15:390:15:41

Still, is it enough?

0:15:410:15:42

No.

0:15:420:15:43

We still have...

0:15:430:15:44

The statistics are so imbalanced.

0:15:440:15:45

I think it's going to take a while.

0:15:450:15:47

But yeah.

0:15:470:15:51

Margot Robbie talking to our Arts

editor Will Gompertz there.

0:15:510:15:55

You can see more on all of today's

stories on the BBC News Channel.

0:15:550:15:58

That's all from me.

0:15:580:15:59

Goodnight.
