They revealed they got engaged
in secret earlier this month. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:32
I could barely let him finish
proposing. And then there were hugs | 0:00:32 | 0:00:37
and I have the ring on her finger
and I was like, can I give you the | 0:00:37 | 0:00:41
rink was my goal, yes, the ring! | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
As for the royal rock -
the prince included stones | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
from his mother Diana's collection
and designed the ring himself. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
In Washington, Congress is back
in town with a full to-do list, | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
but it's allegations
of sexual misconduct | 0:00:51 | 0:00:52
which dominate the political news. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55

Hello and welcome -
I'm Katty Kay in Washington | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
and Christian Fraser is in London. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
She looked nervous,
he was rather awkward - | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
it was a typical engagement
announcement. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:32
Except that he's a British prince
and she's an American actress. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:36
All of which excites Americans
who can't get enough today | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry
announcing they're getting married. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:43
They made their first official
engagement appearance this afternoon | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
She wore a ring he had designed. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
The diamond by the way
comes from Botswana. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
And it's surrounded by two diamonds | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
from his late mother's
personal collection. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
The statement from Harry's father,
Prince Charles, said: | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
His Royal Highness the Prince
of Wales is delighted to announce | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
the engagement of Prince Harry
to Ms Meghan Markle. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
The wedding will take
place in spring 2018. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:09
The Queen and Prince Phillip
said they were | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
"delighted for the couple
and wished them every happiness." | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
The new Royal couple have just
given their first interview | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
to our colleague Mishal Hussein. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:23
How did you first meet? | 0:02:23 | 0:02:24
Er... | 0:02:24 | 0:02:25 | |
Yes, we first met. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:26
We were introduced, actually,
by a mutual friend, who we will... | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
We should protect her privacy. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:30
Protect her privacy, yeah. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:31
A little too much of that. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
And, but, it was literally
through her, and then we met once | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
and then twice back-to-back,
two dates, in London last July, | 0:02:36 | 0:02:41
beginning of July, and then
it was I think about three, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:45
maybe four, weeks later that
I managed to persuade her to come | 0:02:45 | 0:02:49
and join me in Botswana,
and we camped out with each other | 0:02:49 | 0:02:54
under the stars, and we spent... | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
She came and joined me
for five days out there, | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
which was absolutely fantastic. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
So, then we were really
by ourselves, which was crucial, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
to me, to make sure that we had
a chance to get to know each other. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:07
Your friend who introduced you -
was she trying to set you up? | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
Yes, it was definitely a setup. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:11
It was a blind date. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:12
It was a blind date, for sure. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
And it's so interesting
because we talk about it now, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
and even then, you know,
because I'm from the States, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
you don't grow up with the same
understanding of the Royal Family, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:23
and so, while I now understand very
clearly there is a global interest | 0:03:23 | 0:03:28
there, I didn't know much about him,
and so the only thing I had | 0:03:28 | 0:03:32
asked her when she said she wanted
to set us up was one question - | 0:03:32 | 0:03:36
I said, is he nice? | 0:03:36 | 0:03:37
Because if he wasn't kind, it didn't
seem like it would make sense, | 0:03:37 | 0:03:41
so we went and met for a drink,
and I think very quickly into that, | 0:03:41 | 0:03:41
In the case of your relationship,
unlike for most people, | 0:03:49 | 0:03:51
there's this whole layer of what it
means to get involved with someone | 0:03:51 | 0:03:54
from the Royal Family. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:55
How much of a sense did you have,
Meghan, of the enormity | 0:03:55 | 0:03:58
of what you were getting
into and what it might | 0:03:58 | 0:04:01
mean for your life? | 0:04:01 | 0:04:02
I think I can very safely say,
as naive as it sounds now, | 0:04:02 | 0:04:05
having gone through this learning
curve in the past year and a half, | 0:04:05 | 0:04:08
I did not have any understanding
of just what it would be like. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:11
I don't think either of us did. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:13
We've both said that. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:14
Even though we knew
that it would be... | 0:04:14 | 0:04:16
I tried to warn you as much
as possible, but I think both of us | 0:04:16 | 0:04:19
were totally surprised
by the reaction after the first five | 0:04:19 | 0:04:22
or six months that we had
to ourselves of what would actually | 0:04:22 | 0:04:25
happen from then, so you can have
as many conversations as you want | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
and try and prepare as much
as possible, but we were totally | 0:04:28 | 0:04:31
unprepared for what
happened after that. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:32
The scrutiny. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:33
Well, all sorts. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35
I think also because... | 0:04:35 | 0:04:40
There's a misconception
that, because I worked | 0:04:40 | 0:04:42
in the entertainment industry,
that this would be something | 0:04:42 | 0:04:44
I would be familiar with. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:45
Even though I'd been on my show
for six years at that point, | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
and working before that,
I've never been part of tabloid | 0:04:48 | 0:04:51
culture, never been in pop
culture to that degree, | 0:04:51 | 0:04:53
and lived a relatively quiet life,
even though I focused so much | 0:04:53 | 0:04:58
on my job, so that was a really
stark difference out | 0:04:58 | 0:05:04
of the gate, but... | 0:05:04 | 0:05:06
And I think we were just hit so hard
at the beginning with a lot | 0:05:06 | 0:05:10
of mistruths that I made the choice
to not read anything. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:13
Positive or negative,
it just didn't make sense. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:15
Instead, we focused all
of our energies just | 0:05:15 | 0:05:16
on nurturing our relationship. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:17
On us, yeah. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:19
On us. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:20 | |
And some of that scrutiny -
and you ended up making a very | 0:05:20 | 0:05:23
public statement about it - | 0:05:23 | 0:05:24
some of that scrutiny was centred
around your ethnicity, Meghan. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:27
When you realised that,
what did you think? | 0:05:27 | 0:05:30
Of course it's
disheartening, you know. | 0:05:30 | 0:05:32
It's a shame that that is
the climate, in this world, | 0:05:32 | 0:05:38
to focus on that, or be
discriminatory in that sense. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:42
But I think, at the end of the day,
I'm really just proud of who I am | 0:05:42 | 0:05:46
and where I come from,
and we have never put | 0:05:46 | 0:05:50
any focus on that. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:52
We've just focused on who we are
as a couple, and so, | 0:05:52 | 0:05:55
when you take all those extra layers
away, and all of that noise, | 0:05:55 | 0:05:59
I think it makes it really easy
to just enjoy being together, | 0:05:59 | 0:06:03
and tune all the rest of that out. | 0:06:04 | 0:06:12
What was it like
introducing Meghan to your | 0:06:12 | 0:06:14
father and your brother? | 0:06:14 | 0:06:15
Um... | 0:06:15 | 0:06:16 | |
What was it like? | 0:06:16 | 0:06:17
It was exciting. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:18
I mean, I'd been seeing her for
a period of time when I literally | 0:06:18 | 0:06:21
didn't tell anybody at all,
and then William was | 0:06:21 | 0:06:23
longing to meet her,
and so was Catherine, | 0:06:23 | 0:06:25
and being our
neighbours, we managed to get that | 0:06:25 | 0:06:28
in quite a few times now,
and Catherine's been | 0:06:28 | 0:06:32
absolutely amazing. | 0:06:32 | 0:06:33
She's been wonderful. | 0:06:33 | 0:06:35
As has William as well. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:37
They've been fantastic support. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:38
And then my father as well,
we've had a couple... | 0:06:38 | 0:06:40
No, more than that. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:42
A handful of teas and meetings
and all sorts of gatherings over at | 0:06:42 | 0:06:46
his place as well, so the family
together have been absolutely solid | 0:06:46 | 0:06:51
support, and my grandparents as well
have been wonderful throughout this | 0:06:51 | 0:06:56
whole process. | 0:06:56 | 0:07:04
And you met the Queen? | 0:07:04 | 0:07:05
Yes, I have a couple of times. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:07
What's that like? | 0:07:07 | 0:07:08
It's incredible. | 0:07:08 | 0:07:09
First, to be able to meet her,
through his lens, not just | 0:07:09 | 0:07:11
with his honour and respect for her
as the monarch but the love he has | 0:07:11 | 0:07:15
for her as his grandmother, those
layers have been important for me so | 0:07:15 | 0:07:21
when I met her I had a deep
understanding and of course | 0:07:21 | 0:07:24
incredible respect for having
that time with her. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:26
We've had a really... | 0:07:26 | 0:07:27
She's an incredible woman. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:35
And the corgis took
to you straight away! | 0:07:35 | 0:07:37
The last 33 years of
being barked at, this | 0:07:37 | 0:07:39
one, walking in, the corgis. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:41
Tell us about the ring. | 0:07:41 | 0:07:50
The ring is obviously yellow
gold, because that's her favourite, | 0:07:51 | 0:07:54
and the main stone
itself I sourced from Botswana, | 0:07:54 | 0:07:56
and the little diamonds either side
are from my mother's | 0:07:56 | 0:07:58
jewellery collection,
to make sure | 0:07:58 | 0:07:59
that she is with us
on this crazy journey together. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:02
It's beautiful. | 0:08:02 | 0:08:03
And he designed it. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:04
It's incredible. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:05
Yeah. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:06 | |
Make sure it stays on that finger! | 0:08:06 | 0:08:08
Of course. | 0:08:08 | 0:08:10
What does it mean to
you, Meghan, to have | 0:08:10 | 0:08:12
those stones on your finger that
once belonged to Princess Diana? | 0:08:12 | 0:08:16
I think everything about Harry's
thoughtfulness and the inclusion of | 0:08:16 | 0:08:23
that, and obviously not being able
to meet his mom, it's so important | 0:08:23 | 0:08:27
to me to know that she's
a part of this with us, | 0:08:27 | 0:08:35
What do you think your mother
would have thought of Meghan, | 0:08:35 | 0:08:38
or said about Meghan? | 0:08:38 | 0:08:39
They'd be thick as thieves,
without question. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:41
I mean, she would be over the moon,
jumping up and down, | 0:08:41 | 0:08:46
so excited for me, but then,
would probably have | 0:08:46 | 0:08:50
been best friends with Meghan, so it
is days like today when I really | 0:08:50 | 0:08:55
miss having her around and being
able to share the happy news, | 0:08:55 | 0:08:58
but with the ring and everything
else that's going on, | 0:08:58 | 0:09:00
I'm sure she's with us, | 0:09:00 | 0:09:02
you know, jumping up
and down somewhere else. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:06
Prince Harry, Meghan Markle,
thank you both very much. | 0:09:06 | 0:09:08
Thank you so much. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:10
Thank you. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:19
Christian, I know you are a big
romantic. Tell me you didn't love | 0:09:19 | 0:09:22
that! | 0:09:22 | 0:09:22 | |
Let's get some stateside reaction
to today's announcement | 0:09:22 | 0:09:24
from Charlotte Triggs. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:25
She's a Senior Editor
at People Magazine and joins | 0:09:25 | 0:09:28
us now from New York. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:29
Charlotte, listening to Meghan
Markle, she is articulate, poised, | 0:09:29 | 0:09:33
seems very confident, her life is
about to change dramatically. How | 0:09:33 | 0:09:37
much does it change the whole
equation that she is an American? | 0:09:37 | 0:09:42
You know, I think it just makes it
even more of a dramatic story. Kate | 0:09:42 | 0:09:47
first met William when they were
students together, people knew her | 0:09:47 | 0:09:51
for years and years. Meghan is
really quite unknown and the fact | 0:09:51 | 0:09:55
that she is an American who is
having this fairy tale experience, I | 0:09:55 | 0:09:58
think all the women out there are
able to project their own kind of | 0:09:58 | 0:10:02
fantasy onto her of meeting a prince
of foreign lands and getting married | 0:10:02 | 0:10:09
and becoming Royal. There was a huge
amount of attention here paid to | 0:10:09 | 0:10:13
Diana when Kate and William got
married, that was a big story here | 0:10:13 | 0:10:18
in the United States. For your
readers, is this going to be as big | 0:10:18 | 0:10:21
a deal? Yes, I think this is a huge
deal because, you know, it is not | 0:10:21 | 0:10:27
everyday that you have someone like
this, an American actress, from | 0:10:27 | 0:10:31
relatively humble beginnings he gets
to become if not a princess, a | 0:10:31 | 0:10:37
duchess. Part of the family. It is
something that really captivates | 0:10:37 | 0:10:41
this country. People are really
not... We don't have the culture of | 0:10:41 | 0:10:46
royalty in United States ourselves.
The closest we had was probably the | 0:10:46 | 0:10:50
Kennedys and saw people love to
imagine this life of Cassells and | 0:10:50 | 0:10:56
diamonds and royals that is not
something you get to see here every | 0:10:56 | 0:10:59
day so I think it is a big deal as
people, you know, has covered the | 0:10:59 | 0:11:03
Royals for years and years. We had
Diana on our cover 58 times, she was | 0:11:03 | 0:11:07
on our cover more than anyone else,
so I think there is a great addition | 0:11:07 | 0:11:11
in this country of royal watching,
as it were. Do you think your | 0:11:11 | 0:11:15
magazine and others will start to
look at the history of its? The last | 0:11:15 | 0:11:19
time an American marries a Royal was
when Edward VIII was forced to | 0:11:19 | 0:11:25
abdicate after marrying Wallis
Simpson. Times are very different | 0:11:25 | 0:11:29
now and so I wonder if the Americans
would say this is really the Royal | 0:11:29 | 0:11:34
family coming into the modern age?
Right, I think that is totally true. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:38
The fact of the matter is that she
is not your traditional candidate to | 0:11:38 | 0:11:44
be someone marrying into the family.
She is divorced which was previously | 0:11:44 | 0:11:48
something they didn't really go for
but the fact of the matter is that | 0:11:48 | 0:11:51
it is a new age, a new generation
and both William and Harry have | 0:11:51 | 0:11:55
decided that they want to kind of
take control of their lives and | 0:11:55 | 0:12:00
marry who they want to marry and I
think it has really shown how much | 0:12:00 | 0:12:03
the Royal family has changed since
those days that people would be | 0:12:03 | 0:12:06
forced to abdicate the throne.
Charlotte Triggs, thank you very | 0:12:06 | 0:12:09
much for coming in. And you can see
the full interview on the BBC News | 0:12:09 | 0:12:14
Channel and BBC World News from
8:30pm GMT in about an hour and 20 | 0:12:14 | 0:12:19
minute's time. | 0:12:19 | 0:12:20
Al Franken, the Democratic
Senator from Minnesota, | 0:12:20 | 0:12:22
says he's embarrassed and ashamed
by his behaviour towards women. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:26
Four women have now accused him
of sexual misconduct | 0:12:26 | 0:12:28
and he'll be the subject
of an ethics investigation. | 0:12:28 | 0:12:32
Just a short time ago, Franken spoke
outside his Senate office | 0:12:32 | 0:12:35
saying he has been doing a lot
of reflecting and he again | 0:12:35 | 0:12:38
apologized for his actions. | 0:12:38 | 0:12:43
I know that I've let a lot of people
down, the people of Minnesota, my | 0:12:43 | 0:12:50
colleagues, my staff, my supporters
and everyone who has counted on me | 0:12:50 | 0:13:00
to be a champion for women. To all
of you, I just want to again say I | 0:13:00 | 0:13:09
am sorry. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:09
Senator Franken isn't the only
elected official in the US having | 0:13:09 | 0:13:12
to answer allegations against him. | 0:13:12 | 0:13:13
On Sunday, congressman John Conyers
stepped down as the ranking Democrat | 0:13:13 | 0:13:16
on the House Judiciary Committee. | 0:13:16 | 0:13:17
The civil rights hero had to give
up his powerful position | 0:13:17 | 0:13:20
pending an investigation
into sexual misconduct. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:24
All this as Roy Moore
continues his run to become | 0:13:24 | 0:13:27
a US Senator from Alabama
after multiple women have come | 0:13:27 | 0:13:30
forward alleging sexual harassment,
some while they were minors. | 0:13:30 | 0:13:38
Joining us now is journalist
Jay Newton Small, | 0:13:38 | 0:13:40
who has covered congress
and is author of | 0:13:40 | 0:13:42
Broad Influence: How Women Are
Changing The Way America Works. | 0:13:42 | 0:13:45
Thank you for coming in. What is
interesting, I think about the Al | 0:13:45 | 0:13:49
Franken case is it has raised here
in the States at least the whole | 0:13:49 | 0:13:52
issue of relativity around sexual
harassment. Are some allegations | 0:13:52 | 0:13:57
worse than others? XL apologises
profusely, does that somehow | 0:13:57 | 0:14:01
exonerate them later on? Is Al
Franken is sort of sign of the | 0:14:01 | 0:14:08
evolving to meet all sexual
harassment? I think there should be | 0:14:08 | 0:14:11
two categories. One should be for
Roy Moore. Aged to be a bipartisan | 0:14:11 | 0:14:17
issue where Americans would say
abusing a child was very different | 0:14:17 | 0:14:20
than just has the state make
sexually harassing women or other | 0:14:20 | 0:14:23
people versus people like Al Franken
or really the president himself, | 0:14:23 | 0:14:30
Donald Trump, and any number of
other politicians who have been | 0:14:30 | 0:14:33
accused of this. Those are people
who have been accused of potentially | 0:14:33 | 0:14:37
groping or touching inappropriately
women and, yes, there are definitely | 0:14:37 | 0:14:41
different kinds and different levels
of rate so some people have been | 0:14:41 | 0:14:46
accused of using power to abuse
women, saying too much younger | 0:14:46 | 0:14:52
women, 19 or 20 rows just beginning
their careers that they would have a | 0:14:52 | 0:14:55
career as they sleep with him, that
sort of thing. But there is a | 0:14:55 | 0:14:58
question of whether there should be
a different standard for a sitting | 0:14:58 | 0:15:02
senator like Al Franken and if you
have been elected to office, you to | 0:15:02 | 0:15:06
hold yourself to a higher standard.
No doubt, it is a huge debate in | 0:15:06 | 0:15:10
America today I do not know. You
look at Hollywood and the media, no | 0:15:10 | 0:15:16
question, the minute these
accusations come out, you are out. | 0:15:16 | 0:15:19
This is not what we do, it is not
good for business. In politics, | 0:15:19 | 0:15:23
things are much murkier because
there are questions about | 0:15:23 | 0:15:26
allegations being politically
motivated, someone potentially being | 0:15:26 | 0:15:30
paid to say these things coming into
play and that is why there is an | 0:15:30 | 0:15:33
investigation and are the steps
where you can go to ethics | 0:15:33 | 0:15:37
committees to have an arbitrator to
understand who is at fault here and | 0:15:37 | 0:15:41
whether these people should step
down, whether they should be | 0:15:41 | 0:15:45
penalised or not. Christian, I hear
this is much more widespread than | 0:15:45 | 0:15:49
you might imagine on Capitol Hill.
I wonder if perhaps one of the | 0:15:49 | 0:15:52
problems might be how they have
historically been investigated. I | 0:15:52 | 0:15:56
read about an archaic law that said
later had of confidentiality and | 0:15:56 | 0:16:01
more than that the boy is going to
be settlements, the sect sick bag | 0:16:01 | 0:16:05
settlements are kept -- the
settlements are kept confidential. | 0:16:05 | 0:16:12
We have a gruff year of settlements
from the last ten years. This is the | 0:16:12 | 0:16:15
amount of money that had been paid
out to various women. The figure is | 0:16:15 | 0:16:21
$934,000 paid out in 2017. I am
trying to think what would happen | 0:16:21 | 0:16:26
here in the UK taxpayers were told
that there was a slush fund for | 0:16:26 | 0:16:33
paying out to sexual harassment
victims. It is absolutely | 0:16:33 | 0:16:38
unquestionable that this process
needs to be completely overhauled | 0:16:38 | 0:16:41
and I think there is agreement on
Capitol Hill but not enough is being | 0:16:41 | 0:16:44
done. There is a huge amount of
outrage that taxpayer money would be | 0:16:44 | 0:16:48
involved, these agreements were kept
secret and that is both sides of the | 0:16:48 | 0:16:52
aisle. You hear it from everybody
including leadership, even the | 0:16:52 | 0:16:56
Republicans, so there is no question
that there will be a very close | 0:16:56 | 0:17:00
examining of this process and it
will be overhauled but the question | 0:17:00 | 0:17:03
as to what extent and that remains
to be seen. Thank you for coming in. | 0:17:03 | 0:17:09
That is an extraordinary point that
she was making, you could make a | 0:17:09 | 0:17:13
complaint against someone you're
working for, a senator or | 0:17:13 | 0:17:16
congressman and then you would be
sitting in the same office while | 0:17:16 | 0:17:20
this 30 day period elapsed and you
were talking to the lawyers and you | 0:17:20 | 0:17:22
would still have to work with this
person and there would be no person | 0:17:22 | 0:17:25
in between you and a senator or
congressmen that you could talk to. | 0:17:25 | 0:17:30
Yes, I went through the steps that
it took to file a complaint of | 0:17:30 | 0:17:33
sexual harassment in the US Congress
and it is still identifying and Cobb | 0:17:33 | 0:17:38
located and lengthy, the whole
process, that in all wonder women | 0:17:38 | 0:17:42
don't apply. Not only is there at
the time of working in the office of | 0:17:42 | 0:17:46
someone you have already accused of
sexual harassment but you're not | 0:17:46 | 0:17:49
allowed to talk to anyone, not your
lawyer and not your therapist | 0:17:49 | 0:17:52
potentially about what is going on
so really it is a process that is | 0:17:52 | 0:17:55
almost made to feel and made to me
that the accusers never come forward | 0:17:55 | 0:18:00
and file complaints against men who
are very powerful and this is the | 0:18:00 | 0:18:05
complaint about Capitol Hill and
Westminster, it is an institution | 0:18:05 | 0:18:08
where there are a lot of men, a
disproportionate number of men in | 0:18:08 | 0:18:12
powerful positions and young women
who depend on those men for their | 0:18:12 | 0:18:15
careers.
Yes, it is about getting the system | 0:18:15 | 0:18:17
in place that works. | 0:18:17 | 0:18:19
This week is a critical one
for the Brexit negotiations | 0:18:19 | 0:18:21
and right now the issue of Ireland
is the biggest obstacle to progress. | 0:18:21 | 0:18:24
The Irish government says it
won't accept any Brexit outcome | 0:18:24 | 0:18:27
that leads to a hard border
between north and south. | 0:18:27 | 0:18:30
The Irish hold a veto if they don't
like the way the talks are going. | 0:18:30 | 0:18:36
An added complication
is a corruption investigation | 0:18:36 | 0:18:38
in Ireland that threatens to bring
down the minority government | 0:18:38 | 0:18:41
of Prime Minister Leo Varadkar. | 0:18:41 | 0:18:43
There is a confidence vote
in parliament tomorrow. | 0:18:43 | 0:18:45
If it goes the wrong way
for Mr Varadkar we could be looking | 0:18:45 | 0:18:48
at a snap election before Christmas? | 0:18:48 | 0:18:50
We're joined now from Dublin
by the Irish Minister | 0:18:50 | 0:18:52
for Local Government
and Electoral Reform | 0:18:52 | 0:18:55
John Paul Phelan. | 0:18:55 | 0:19:00
Very good to see you, thank you for
coming on the programme. I know that | 0:19:00 | 0:19:04
you have put the onus for this on
the British Government. Brexit is | 0:19:04 | 0:19:09
there doing, so they have to come up
with a solution, but what would be a | 0:19:09 | 0:19:13
solution that would work for the
Irish Government? Well, the most | 0:19:13 | 0:19:16
important thing from the point of
view of the people in socially | 0:19:16 | 0:19:23
Republic of Ireland and I would say
in the North of Ireland two is the | 0:19:23 | 0:19:26
protection of peace. I am of an age
that I grew up, growing up and going | 0:19:26 | 0:19:33
to school were at the discussion in
the news was what has happened in | 0:19:33 | 0:19:38
the North of Ireland and our
relationship in the North of Ireland | 0:19:38 | 0:19:40
the previous night normally by way
of someone or a number of people | 0:19:40 | 0:19:43
dying. We have a peace process which
has been successful for 20 years, | 0:19:43 | 0:19:48
very successful, but anything that
might impinge on impact and that | 0:19:48 | 0:19:51
obviously is priority number one for
the Irish Government. You wield | 0:19:51 | 0:19:55
extraordinary power at the moment
with this veto, but if you were to | 0:19:55 | 0:19:59
exercise a veto within the European
Council when they meet in a couple | 0:19:59 | 0:20:04
of weeks, you could push Britain to
wards WTO rules and that if that | 0:20:04 | 0:20:09
were the case, there would be a hard
border between North and South and | 0:20:09 | 0:20:13
that is something you are keen to
avoid. It is, but it is something | 0:20:13 | 0:20:16
that so far the British Government
at least have been emphasising that | 0:20:16 | 0:20:22
they are keen to avoid too. The
problem from our perspective is that | 0:20:22 | 0:20:25
there is a summit on the 13th or
14th of December and while | 0:20:25 | 0:20:31
sufficient progress has to be
recorded at that stage to advance to | 0:20:31 | 0:20:34
the next stage of the negotiations,
no real, I suppose, hard to detail | 0:20:34 | 0:20:40
has been produced yet by the British
Government as to how the issue of | 0:20:40 | 0:20:44
the Irish question might be
resolved. There has been movement on | 0:20:44 | 0:20:47
the cost of the divorce settlement,
if you like, and indeed on the | 0:20:47 | 0:20:51
rights of EU citizens in Britain
and, indeed, British citizens in the | 0:20:51 | 0:20:55
EU but the third piece, the Irish
peace, hasn't seen any movement yet | 0:20:55 | 0:20:59
other than both sides stating their
position that they don't want to be | 0:20:59 | 0:21:04
hard border to exist on the island
of Ireland but no concrete proposals | 0:21:04 | 0:21:07
to as to how that can be avoided. As
you said, the Prime Minister and | 0:21:07 | 0:21:13
Liam Fox has reiterated again that
they do not want any physical | 0:21:13 | 0:21:16
structures along a 300 odd mile
border, but you are demanding that | 0:21:16 | 0:21:21
there is some kind of written
confirmation of that or declaration | 0:21:21 | 0:21:25
of that. It sounds like you don't
really trust them, is that the case? | 0:21:25 | 0:21:29
It is not that we don't trust
them,... Why do you want it in | 0:21:29 | 0:21:33
writing them? Because up to this
point, there have been a lot of | 0:21:33 | 0:21:37
words but not a lot of detail and I
do not think it is unreasonable. The | 0:21:37 | 0:21:42
Irish Government's first
responsibility is to the people of | 0:21:42 | 0:21:45
Ireland. We have a close
relationship with Britain, closer | 0:21:45 | 0:21:47
than it has been in the history of
our state, but it is also fair to | 0:21:47 | 0:21:50
say that we have a responsibility to
the citizens who we represent here | 0:21:50 | 0:21:55
to ensure that there is concrete
proposals before the next stage of | 0:21:55 | 0:21:59
negotiations is entered into. Can
you tell us what you are hearing | 0:21:59 | 0:22:03
from the other members of the
European Union, whether they are | 0:22:03 | 0:22:07
giving new support for your position
on the border? The European union | 0:22:07 | 0:22:12
right from the start in its first
documents last June outlined, I | 0:22:12 | 0:22:16
suppose, that the Irish issue was
one of the three main issues that | 0:22:16 | 0:22:20
had to be considered throughout
these negotiations and that view has | 0:22:20 | 0:22:26
not changed from the European Union.
What happens if the vote of | 0:22:26 | 0:22:31
confidence goes against you tomorrow
and there is a snap election? That | 0:22:31 | 0:22:34
will put Leo Varadkar in a very
difficult position. He is probably | 0:22:34 | 0:22:39
going to dig in, isn't he? It would
be worse for him at the polls if he | 0:22:39 | 0:22:44
didn't. The one thing on the Irish
side of this whole debate that has | 0:22:44 | 0:22:50
been clear is that there is no
political division between any of | 0:22:50 | 0:22:52
the parties, be it the ones that are
in Government or the ones in | 0:22:52 | 0:22:57
opposition, on the need to avoid the
hard border between the North of | 0:22:57 | 0:23:00
Ireland and the Republic. That in
itself wouldn't be much of an issue, | 0:23:00 | 0:23:05
I think. Pretty chaotic though.
Well, we have minority governments | 0:23:05 | 0:23:11
everywhere including in Britain and
we are actually used to them in a | 0:23:11 | 0:23:14
sense in the Republic of Ireland. We
have had many of them before, | 0:23:14 | 0:23:18
several in my lifetime, but there
is, as you pointed out at the start, | 0:23:18 | 0:23:23
there are negotiations going on
tonight between Leo Varadkar and the | 0:23:23 | 0:23:26
Leader of the Opposition and their
two main advisers. I am not party to | 0:23:26 | 0:23:29
them but the discussions have
advised snick happens over the last | 0:23:29 | 0:23:37
few nights. Nobody fancies the idea
of a general election in the | 0:23:37 | 0:23:40
Republic of Ireland before
Christmas. Good to talk to you, | 0:23:40 | 0:23:44
thank you very much for coming on.
Thank you. Incredible pictures | 0:23:44 | 0:23:56
showing from Bally. The island's
Orly airport is closed, thousands of | 0:23:56 | 0:24:02
tourists are stranded. People will
be forced to leave their homes if | 0:24:02 | 0:24:05
necessary. | 0:24:05 | 0:24:09
A giant cloud of rocks, glass,
crystal and gas spews out | 0:24:09 | 0:24:11
of Bali's tallest volcano. | 0:24:11 | 0:24:14
Life near Mount Agung goes on,
even as the authorities | 0:24:14 | 0:24:18
urge locals to leave. | 0:24:18 | 0:24:22
The hope - that there won't be
the death and destruction wrought | 0:24:22 | 0:24:25
by the volcano last time around. | 0:24:25 | 0:24:30
That was in 1963. | 0:24:30 | 0:24:33
In a country with a history
of volcanic eruptions, | 0:24:33 | 0:24:36
this was one of the worst. | 0:24:36 | 0:24:38
More than 1,000 died. | 0:24:38 | 0:24:40
The orange glow today, magma visible
at the top of the volcano. | 0:24:40 | 0:24:44
A clue that a full-scale
eruption could come soon. | 0:24:44 | 0:24:49
As the magma has moved up
through the volcano, | 0:24:49 | 0:24:51
it's heated water inside,
creating steam and pressure, | 0:24:51 | 0:24:56
hurling fragments of rock thousands
of metres into the air. | 0:24:56 | 0:25:02
In villages, some have no
choice but to stay put. | 0:25:02 | 0:25:07
"I'm scared but I don't have the
money to leave," says this woman. | 0:25:07 | 0:25:11
But some tourists are still there,
as even experts struggle to predict | 0:25:11 | 0:25:15
what this volcano will do next. | 0:25:15 | 0:25:23
Incredible pictures there. | 0:25:23 | 0:25:26
This is Beyond 100
Days from the BBC. | 0:25:26 | 0:25:28
Coming up for viewers on the BBC
News Channel and BBC World News - | 0:25:28 | 0:25:31
from actress to princess -
we've more on the woman | 0:25:31 | 0:25:34
who'll marry Prince Harry. | 0:25:34 | 0:25:35
And incredible new details
about Mugabe's downfall | 0:25:35 | 0:25:37
and the moments leading
up to his resignation. | 0:25:37 | 0:25:40
Did China have a role to play? | 0:25:40 | 0:25:42
That's still to come. | 0:25:42 | 0:25:53
Briefly, we have had milder air
across the UK today that | 0:26:12 | 0:26:14
temperatures are going to fall over
the next few days. Cold air is due | 0:26:14 | 0:26:17
to return from the North with
northerly wind replacing this mild | 0:26:17 | 0:26:20
west to south-westerly winds that we
had to date together with all this | 0:26:20 | 0:26:24
cloud. The cloud has brought us some
outbreaks of rain which is sinking | 0:26:24 | 0:26:29
southwards out into the endless
channel. Clear skies and showers | 0:26:29 | 0:26:32
following overnight, most of them in
Northern Ireland, Wales, wintry | 0:26:32 | 0:26:37
showers across the northern half of
Scotland as well. Cold tonight, | 0:26:37 | 0:26:41
still not that holds just yet. A
patchy frost across the North and | 0:26:41 | 0:26:45
perhaps icy patches in northern
Scotland where we have those | 0:26:45 | 0:26:47
showers. There will be wintry
missing the show was here as well, | 0:26:47 | 0:26:51
particularly over Highland and
Grampian, maybe sleet and snow as | 0:26:51 | 0:26:54
well for the Southern uplands around
the borders. A number of showers | 0:26:54 | 0:26:58
packing in all those cold winds
across from Northern Ireland, | 0:26:58 | 0:27:00
pulling them over the Irish Sea.
Further North of England, most | 0:27:00 | 0:27:06
showers initially near the coast and
many inland areas will start dry, | 0:27:06 | 0:27:10
sunny and cold. Towards the
south-east of England, the Southwest | 0:27:10 | 0:27:15
will see some showers, frequent
showers during the day across the | 0:27:15 | 0:27:18
western side of Wales, lots of
showers for Northern Ireland is as | 0:27:18 | 0:27:21
well. Wintry showers continue for
Scotland and those showers get blown | 0:27:21 | 0:27:26
inland through the morning, down
towards the Midlands and East Anglia | 0:27:26 | 0:27:29
in the afternoon. That is a change
is the day goes on. It will be a | 0:27:29 | 0:27:34
cold day than today, will feel
colder today especially with some | 0:27:34 | 0:27:37
stronger winds, too. This is the
general pressure pattern that we | 0:27:37 | 0:27:40
will have over the next few days.
High pressure over to the west of | 0:27:40 | 0:27:43
the UK, low pressure to the east,
the isobars coming all the way down | 0:27:43 | 0:27:48
from the North still another cold
day on Wednesday, more frost rounds, | 0:27:48 | 0:27:54
fewer showers over Northern Ireland,
Wales and the Southwest. A few | 0:27:54 | 0:27:57
showers still for Scotland but more
showers down the eastern coastal | 0:27:57 | 0:28:01
counties of England. Many places
inland will be dry, quite sunny but | 0:28:01 | 0:28:05
also pretty cold out there as well.
Similar sort of look to the weather | 0:28:05 | 0:28:09
as we move from Wednesday into
Thursday. Pressure pattern is not | 0:28:09 | 0:28:13
really changed at all. Wind
direction is crucial so we are | 0:28:13 | 0:28:16
getting more of wind coming in off
the North Sea, hence more showers | 0:28:16 | 0:28:20
down the eastern side of England and
fewer showers for Northern Ireland, | 0:28:20 | 0:28:26
Wales and the Southwest. In between,
lots of sunshine but another cold | 0:28:26 | 0:28:29
day. | 0:28:29 | 0:28:31 | |

If some reason you HAVEN'T heard -
we learned today that | 0:31:08 | 0:31:12
Britain's Prince Harry is to marry
the American actress Meghan Markle. | 0:31:12 | 0:31:15
So what do we know about her? | 0:31:15 | 0:31:17
Well, she is 36, divorced
and describes herself as a "strong, | 0:31:17 | 0:31:20
confident, mixed-raced woman". | 0:31:20 | 0:31:24
She grew up in Los Angeles
and until she met Prince Harry | 0:31:24 | 0:31:27
was best known for playing
Rachel Zane in the US | 0:31:27 | 0:31:31
TV drama Suits. | 0:31:31 | 0:31:33
She's also campaigned for gender
equality and a variety | 0:31:33 | 0:31:36
of humanitarian causes -
as our Royal Correspondent | 0:31:36 | 0:31:38
Daniella Relph explains. | 0:31:38 | 0:31:41
Have you heard? | 0:31:41 | 0:31:42
There is breaking news out
of London this morning. | 0:31:42 | 0:31:44
Drum roll, please. | 0:31:44 | 0:31:45
Prince Harry and American
actress Meghan Markle | 0:31:45 | 0:31:47
are engaged - yay! | 0:31:47 | 0:31:49
Congratulations, Harry and Meghan. | 0:31:49 | 0:31:51
We don't know you,
but congratulations! | 0:31:51 | 0:31:53
But we will all get to know
Meghan Markle much better | 0:31:53 | 0:31:56
over the next few months. | 0:31:56 | 0:31:57
She is no ordinary royal fiancee. | 0:31:57 | 0:32:01
Her early acting career
was made up of small | 0:32:01 | 0:32:03
television and film
parts and adverts. | 0:32:03 | 0:32:07
There was also a stint
opening the boxes | 0:32:07 | 0:32:08
on the TV programme Deal Or No Deal. | 0:32:08 | 0:32:11
It's Meghan Markle! | 0:32:11 | 0:32:13
Wow, you're pretty. | 0:32:13 | 0:32:14
Good, you've hit on me. | 0:32:14 | 0:32:15
We can get it out of the way
that I am not interested. | 0:32:15 | 0:32:18
No, I'm sorry... | 0:32:18 | 0:32:19
Before her big break
in the legal drama Suits. | 0:32:19 | 0:32:23
But she sometimes took
issue with the way her character, | 0:32:23 | 0:32:26
Rachel Zane, was portrayed. | 0:32:26 | 0:32:28
This season, every script seemed
to begin with | 0:32:28 | 0:32:31
"Rachel enters wearing a towel." | 0:32:31 | 0:32:33
And I said, "Nope, not
doing it any more." | 0:32:33 | 0:32:36
Not doing it, and I called
the creator and I was like, | 0:32:36 | 0:32:38
"It's just gratuitous." | 0:32:39 | 0:32:40
We get it, you've
already seen it once, | 0:32:40 | 0:32:42
so I think that at a certain point, | 0:32:42 | 0:32:44
you feel empowered enough
to just say no. | 0:32:44 | 0:32:50
Meghan Markle will bring
something different | 0:32:50 | 0:32:51
to the British Royal family. | 0:32:51 | 0:32:57
Born and brought up here
in the United States, she is a | 0:32:57 | 0:33:00
proud American but she's also
a campaigner with strong | 0:33:00 | 0:33:02
opinions and, if possible,
she won't want her marriage | 0:33:02 | 0:33:04
to limit that side her life. | 0:33:04 | 0:33:12
Her humanitarian work
has taken her around the world, | 0:33:12 | 0:33:14
here in Rwanda. | 0:33:14 | 0:33:15
She's focused
on gender equality. | 0:33:15 | 0:33:19
Particularly as an advocate
for United Nations women. | 0:33:19 | 0:33:22
It's really hands-on,
being part of this. | 0:33:22 | 0:33:27
It feels really nice. | 0:33:27 | 0:33:30
I think her passion
for other people and wanting | 0:33:30 | 0:33:32
to create social change is
something, with that platform, can | 0:33:32 | 0:33:35
only be positive. | 0:33:35 | 0:33:38
I bet she'll be fine,
she'll be great in fact! | 0:33:38 | 0:33:45
Meghan Markle grew up in this
affluent neighbourhood of Los | 0:33:45 | 0:33:48
Angeles and went to
a private Catholic school. | 0:33:48 | 0:33:51
She's mixed race, the daughter
of divorced parents. | 0:33:51 | 0:33:57
Her mother, a yoga teacher
and her father, a TV | 0:33:57 | 0:34:00
lighting director. | 0:34:00 | 0:34:03
In the early days of her
relationship with Prince Harry some | 0:34:03 | 0:34:06
of the media coverage
unsettled them, | 0:34:06 | 0:34:08
Prince Harry releasing
a | 0:34:08 | 0:34:09 | |
statement suggesting coverage
had racial undertones. | 0:34:09 | 0:34:13
It felt racist to me,
like there was an attempt to | 0:34:13 | 0:34:16
make her seem like an outsider. | 0:34:16 | 0:34:21
So, yeah that was pretty startling. | 0:34:21 | 0:34:23
This will be a whole
new world for Meghan | 0:34:23 | 0:34:26
Markle. | 0:34:26 | 0:34:27
Swapping the small screen
for a far bigger stage. | 0:34:27 | 0:34:37
Ms Markle's parents Thomas Markle,
a lighting director, | 0:34:38 | 0:34:40
and Doria Ragland, a social worker
and yoga instructor have welcomed | 0:34:40 | 0:34:44
the news: "We are incredibly happy
for Meghan and Harry. | 0:34:44 | 0:34:53
Our daughter has always been
a kind and loving person. | 0:34:53 | 0:34:56
To see her union with Harry,
who shares the same qualities, | 0:34:56 | 0:34:58
is a source of great joy for us
as parents." | 0:34:58 | 0:35:08
In been being slightly bookish about
the story and then the interview | 0:35:08 | 0:35:13
started and you were totally
riveted. You have outed me on live | 0:35:13 | 0:35:17
television. I thought it was a good
interview. It was interesting | 0:35:17 | 0:35:19
television. I thought it was a good
interview. It was interesting to see | 0:35:19 | 0:35:20
her because he is very impressive
and to hear from her was the most | 0:35:20 | 0:35:26
interesting part. Super articulate
and confident. Let's move on. | 0:35:26 | 0:35:33
A group of German business leaders
wants the Brexit vote reversed | 0:35:33 | 0:35:36
in exchange for a comprehensive deal
on immigration and free movement. | 0:35:36 | 0:35:38
They've even got a catchy slogan -
"Exit from Brexit" - | 0:35:38 | 0:35:41
but is it remotely realistic? | 0:35:41 | 0:35:42
The group of seven influential
figures is warning that Germany must | 0:35:42 | 0:35:45
do more to prevent losing "its most
valuable partner within the EU". | 0:35:45 | 0:35:48
Not a view you hear expressed
from Europe very often. | 0:35:48 | 0:35:50
I'm joined now by one of the leading
voices from the group. | 0:35:50 | 0:35:59
Good to see you, thank you for
joining us. Exit from Brexit, that | 0:35:59 | 0:36:06
is not really going to float. 70
million people in Britain are | 0:36:06 | 0:36:12
committed to it. Our call is not
addressed to Britain, it is | 0:36:12 | 0:36:18
addressed to Brussels because we
have seen the effects of Brexit and | 0:36:18 | 0:36:21
not only bad for Britain, this is
quite obvious if you look at the | 0:36:21 | 0:36:25
economic results. It is long-term
also bad for Europe because with | 0:36:25 | 0:36:32
Britain the last nation with common
sense in my opinion leaves the | 0:36:32 | 0:36:37
European Union we need these
advocates for freedom and self | 0:36:37 | 0:36:42
responsibility and autonomy. The
second reason is it is our opinion | 0:36:42 | 0:36:46
and conviction that Brexit is not
only the fault if you wish of the | 0:36:46 | 0:36:52
British, I think it is the fault of
Brussels. Brussels has always done | 0:36:52 | 0:36:59
much to much centralisation and
harmonisation. It is like Britain | 0:36:59 | 0:37:04
having joined a football club and
then the club management decided to | 0:37:04 | 0:37:06
play golf. Then I asked myself who
has really left him? We are | 0:37:06 | 0:37:12
addressing Brussels and what
Brussels to give a deal to Britain | 0:37:12 | 0:37:17
which Cameron wanted and they quit
sure with such a new deal the | 0:37:17 | 0:37:21
situation in Britain would also
change. That ship has sailed. I was | 0:37:21 | 0:37:27
at that conference before the
referendum and David Cameron urged | 0:37:27 | 0:37:30
people in the remit to give him a
deal that he could sell back at home | 0:37:30 | 0:37:34
but the problem has always been that
Federalists within the room did not | 0:37:34 | 0:37:37
want to play ball. And now Britain
has chosen the path that he wants to | 0:37:37 | 0:37:44
go down. There is no deal turning
back? This is not the first time | 0:37:44 | 0:37:50
that any European Union referenda
took place and the situation changed | 0:37:50 | 0:37:55
and a new deal was put on the table.
Then the country decided otherwise. | 0:37:55 | 0:37:59
Let's not forget and you alluded to
it, the European Union was not ready | 0:37:59 | 0:38:05
at that time to give Cameron the
necessary autonomy which Cameron | 0:38:05 | 0:38:12
believed rightfully he needed. Add
in the meantime most European | 0:38:12 | 0:38:18
countries think that kind of
autonomy to control its own | 0:38:18 | 0:38:21
aggression is necessary for all
other countries. -- control its own | 0:38:21 | 0:38:26
immigration. Even Angela Merkel has
changed their policy of 180 degrees | 0:38:26 | 0:38:34
solicit US is different and if I see
two trains running on the same track | 0:38:34 | 0:38:39
against each other I think it is
irresponsible not to try to stop | 0:38:39 | 0:38:42
them. Let's be realistic, it is not
up to Brussels to decide whether | 0:38:42 | 0:38:49
Brexit and will be reversed. That
was a referendum taken by the | 0:38:49 | 0:38:53
British people had voted in favour
of it so realistically, you said | 0:38:53 | 0:38:57
that effort is now Brexit, if that
is the should be a better deal, what | 0:38:57 | 0:39:03
can the EU offer Britain that would
constitute a better deal? You are | 0:39:03 | 0:39:08
quite right. It needs a strong
better deal. In needs a deal which | 0:39:08 | 0:39:12
Cameron wanted at that time. For
instance a clear and own | 0:39:12 | 0:39:17
responsibility for immigration.
Europe was not ready to do that at | 0:39:17 | 0:39:21
that time. I am quite convinced
there are many national governments | 0:39:21 | 0:39:26
who are ready to do that and when
you say it is a realistic, we now | 0:39:26 | 0:39:31
that the majority of Europe
Parliament can consider to be | 0:39:31 | 0:39:38
remainders and I was always
attacking the European negotiation | 0:39:38 | 0:39:45
strategy in regards to your country
because the behaved absolutely and | 0:39:45 | 0:39:48
arrogantly. You have a group of
business leaders behind you but you | 0:39:48 | 0:39:54
do not actually have the support of
any political parties for this | 0:39:54 | 0:39:57
position? We have absolutely no
illusions. Berlin would say this is | 0:39:57 | 0:40:07
the responsibility of Mr Barnier and
Brussels and Brussels would say it | 0:40:07 | 0:40:11
is up to Britain to make the next
move and Britain would see exactly | 0:40:11 | 0:40:15
what you said. However the situation
is so obviously wrong for both that | 0:40:15 | 0:40:19
it is necessary to try to change the
situation and that is what we are | 0:40:19 | 0:40:27
trying to do. On that point, would
it be damaging for Germany? We keep | 0:40:27 | 0:40:35
saying the no deal scenario is very
damaging for the German car industry | 0:40:35 | 0:40:39
and manufacturing, do you agree? I
absolutely agree. Whether a deal or | 0:40:39 | 0:40:44
no Deal, it is both bad for Germany.
Think of the current situation, | 0:40:44 | 0:40:51
sales of German cars have dropped by
20% in the UK. That is about the | 0:40:51 | 0:40:55
same amount we experience when we
had the financial crisis. Look at | 0:40:55 | 0:41:00
the Ukip, the British pound has
collapsed, you have inflation of 3%. | 0:41:00 | 0:41:07
I didn't think that is good for you
us. It is not so unrealistic and | 0:41:07 | 0:41:13
there can only appeal to all those
British people remain and exit who | 0:41:13 | 0:41:20
discover how difficult it is, try to
register and to our platform which | 0:41:20 | 0:41:27
is called new deal for Britain and I
am quite sure if we all get together | 0:41:27 | 0:41:31
and ask these politicians to admit
they made mistakes, they may perhaps | 0:41:31 | 0:41:38
come to their senses and come up
with a new deal for Britain which | 0:41:38 | 0:41:41
would also be a new deal for Europe.
Thank you for joining us. | 0:41:41 | 0:41:52
Turkish Prime Minister Binali
Yildirim says the UK's decision | 0:41:52 | 0:41:54
to leave the European Union has left
the EU 'entirely confused'. | 0:41:54 | 0:41:57
In London, Mr Yildirim told
reporters the EU would need | 0:41:57 | 0:41:59
to revisit its vision on the future. | 0:41:59 | 0:42:01
Despite that message,
the Prime Minister made it | 0:42:01 | 0:42:03
clear his country still wishes to be
a part of the EU. | 0:42:03 | 0:42:06
Pope Francis has met with Myanmar's
army chief on the first day | 0:42:06 | 0:42:10
of his visit to the country,
which has been accused | 0:42:10 | 0:42:13
of 'ethnic cleansing' against its
Muslim Rohingya minority. | 0:42:13 | 0:42:15
He's due to give a speech
in the capital on Tuesday. | 0:42:15 | 0:42:18
And he's been urged not to use | 0:42:18 | 0:42:20
the word 'Rohingya' -
a term not recognised by Myanmar - | 0:42:20 | 0:42:23
to avoid future persecution
of Christians in the country. | 0:42:23 | 0:42:27
Two pharmaceutical firms -
one American, the other German - | 0:42:27 | 0:42:29
have said they will invest more
than a billion dollars in the UK - | 0:42:29 | 0:42:33
creating more than 1,800 jobs. | 0:42:33 | 0:42:34
The deals coincide with the launch
of the government's industrial | 0:42:34 | 0:42:37
strategy white paper,
which is aimed at supporting more | 0:42:37 | 0:42:39
research and development,
encouraging firms to embrace | 0:42:39 | 0:42:42
new technology, and
boosting the economy. | 0:42:42 | 0:42:52
Robert Mugabe was a
wily old politician. | 0:42:52 | 0:42:53
For 37 years he'd hung
on as President in Zimbabwe | 0:42:53 | 0:42:56
by eliminating opponents
and rewarding his most | 0:42:56 | 0:42:57
loyal henchmen. | 0:42:57 | 0:42:59
But now we discover from leaked
intelligence documents, | 0:42:59 | 0:43:01
that for several weeks before
the coup, the President's former | 0:43:01 | 0:43:03
allies were plotting against him. | 0:43:03 | 0:43:06
The 93-year old WAS aware plans were
afoot but he couldn't stop them. | 0:43:06 | 0:43:12
The chief of the army
General Chiwenga decided weeks ago | 0:43:12 | 0:43:15
that Grace Mugabe must be stopped. | 0:43:15 | 0:43:20
On a recent visit to Beijing he was
given the support of the Chinese. | 0:43:20 | 0:43:23
AND on his return to Harare,
the General managed to evade capture | 0:43:23 | 0:43:26
- only because his soldiers
outnumbered Mugabe's secret police | 0:43:26 | 0:43:28
who were waiting at the airport. | 0:43:28 | 0:43:30
Some of his soldiers were disguised
as baggage handlers. | 0:43:30 | 0:43:33
All these details were gathered
by the Reuters News Agency, | 0:43:33 | 0:43:36
Ed Cropley is their bureau chief
in sub-Saharan Africa. | 0:43:36 | 0:43:46
We kind of knew for some time that
whether these divisions within Zona | 0:43:46 | 0:43:52
PF but it was not abundantly clear
that they were trying to bring in | 0:43:52 | 0:43:58
Beijing to not stop the coup. What
you say is correct. We have known | 0:43:58 | 0:44:04
for more than a year that it had
been these massive rifts between the | 0:44:04 | 0:44:10
factions loyal to Robert Mugabe's
wife and factions loyal to the no | 0:44:10 | 0:44:18
president was backed by the
military. The temperature has been | 0:44:18 | 0:44:23
rising, increasing between these two
sides and most recently in the | 0:44:23 | 0:44:26
run-up to the punch by Robert Mugabe
which now appears to be the moment | 0:44:26 | 0:44:34
that really did launch the crew.
What's fascinating about these | 0:44:34 | 0:44:40
documents is what grace was up to an
innately crew was unfolding. She was | 0:44:40 | 0:44:47
tried to get help. People inside
Zimbabwe were desperately trying to | 0:44:47 | 0:44:54
know and discover what was going on.
We have been reporting them are not | 0:44:54 | 0:45:01
personnel characters heading towards
the capital and the afternoon, one | 0:45:01 | 0:45:04
of them broke down beside it would
you have to pity the driver this | 0:45:04 | 0:45:10
armoured vehicle on the day of the
coup has tanked breaks down. But | 0:45:10 | 0:45:16
people in Johannesburg like myself
were furiously trying to call anyone | 0:45:16 | 0:45:20
be good to find out... She was
trying to get social media taken off | 0:45:20 | 0:45:25
here. That is exactly right. Where
we were confused, so was Grace | 0:45:25 | 0:45:34
Mugabe. She called ministers and
supporters who tries to get social | 0:45:34 | 0:45:40
media shuts down because of the
photographs of armoured personnel | 0:45:40 | 0:45:44
carriers and troop carriers
converging on the capital. They | 0:45:44 | 0:45:47
thought it was a major security risk
and assumed that the way to shore up | 0:45:47 | 0:45:51
their position was to shut down the
media. One of the most telling | 0:45:51 | 0:45:55
details is the defence Minister who
puts on a call to the journal who we | 0:45:55 | 0:46:02
know was leading the coup from
headquarters and the defence | 0:46:02 | 0:46:08
Minister calls and says, can you
tell us what is going on, we hear | 0:46:08 | 0:46:12
them may be a coup, do you have any
information? From what we are told | 0:46:12 | 0:46:16
he replied to him, thank you I will
look into it and get back to you. | 0:46:16 | 0:46:21
Now we know he never got back to him
at all. We mentioned the extent with | 0:46:21 | 0:46:26
the general came back from China and
arrived and allow the Secret Service | 0:46:26 | 0:46:37
forces, describe that incident a bit
more. It is telling of how far the | 0:46:37 | 0:46:40
military was compared to go. It is
an extraordinary incident that | 0:46:40 | 0:46:48
crystallises the highest extension
of the game. Robert Mugabe's spies | 0:46:48 | 0:46:52
had got wind of meetings in China
according to information we have | 0:46:52 | 0:47:03
received and after the purge, we do
not yet know exactly what they | 0:47:03 | 0:47:12
discussed in China but certainly on
the Mugabe side of things they put a | 0:47:12 | 0:47:16
and B together and came up with see | 0:47:16 | 0:47:21
he called the chief of police who
are told to pick up at the airport. | 0:47:25 | 0:47:29
We understand the former chief of
the intelligence services had been | 0:47:29 | 0:47:33
commissioned to drop treason charges
against the general survey was | 0:47:33 | 0:47:40
walking right into essentially a
trap, illegal trap that would put | 0:47:40 | 0:47:44
him away for later he was convicted
and that of course is a few actually | 0:47:44 | 0:47:48
lived to tell the tale. He gets on
the phone because like everything | 0:47:48 | 0:47:55
and Zimbabwe have legs like cases so
he says we're up against 100 secret | 0:47:55 | 0:48:02
policeman at the airport and needs
to double that. The information we | 0:48:02 | 0:48:07
have is that as many as 250, 300
special forces troops and six at | 0:48:07 | 0:48:13
service agents are in the airport
disguise as baggage handlers and | 0:48:13 | 0:48:17
security guards. ... Amazing story.
The reporting is fantastic. So glad | 0:48:17 | 0:48:29
everyone leaked that information to
you. Thank you. | 0:48:29 | 0:48:33

When I arrived here in the early

You're watching Beyond One Hundred
Days...Almost two years ago a state | 0:50:55 | 0:50:57
of emergency was declared in Flint,
Michigan when it was found | 0:50:57 | 0:51:00
the city's water supply
was contaminated with lead. | 0:51:00 | 0:51:03
What had started as a cost cutting
measure resulted in multiple | 0:51:03 | 0:51:05
illnesses and an outbreak
of Legionnaire's disease that killed | 0:51:05 | 0:51:07
at least 12 people. | 0:51:07 | 0:51:10
Flint got a lot of attention
but water quality is still a real | 0:51:10 | 0:51:13
concern across the US. | 0:51:13 | 0:51:15
Analysts have found that more
than 1,000 water systems serving | 0:51:15 | 0:51:17
3.9 million Americans,
have water that fails | 0:51:17 | 0:51:20
the safety standard for lead. | 0:51:20 | 0:51:25
As part of his America First series
- the BBC's Aleem Maqbool has | 0:51:25 | 0:51:28
travelled to Flint for this report. | 0:51:28 | 0:51:36
The only thing unusual about what
happened in Flint is the agencies | 0:51:36 | 0:51:41
responsible got caught. | 0:51:41 | 0:51:48
Before she even knew about the lead
poisoning, Kerry Webber recalls her | 0:51:54 | 0:51:59
shock when she took a daughter to
the hospital. They should meet pass | 0:51:59 | 0:52:03
tougher skin that you could see the
bone in her wrist and there was | 0:52:03 | 0:52:08
literally a line that was not
calcified bone, it was late. -- it | 0:52:08 | 0:52:16
was led. It is not... | 0:52:16 | 0:52:24
The crisis either Flint became
national news because of the number | 0:52:32 | 0:52:34
of people affected in such an
extreme and shocking way. But | 0:52:34 | 0:52:39
scientists are worried that millions
of Americans and other parts of the | 0:52:39 | 0:52:43
country are also being poisoned by
the water in their homes but of the | 0:52:43 | 0:52:46
do not know it. And fact what has
been found to contain even more | 0:52:46 | 0:52:52
poisonous lead levels than in Flint
and dozens of towns around the | 0:52:52 | 0:52:55
country and it is happening like a
dead in Flint because of money. We | 0:52:55 | 0:53:01
have not accepted in this country
that water, affordable safe cooking | 0:53:01 | 0:53:05
water is a basic human right. If you
cannot afford to get clean, safe | 0:53:05 | 0:53:12
water that is just your tough luck. | 0:53:12 | 0:53:15
The mayor of Flint was told it was
safe because the state wants to save | 0:53:20 | 0:53:23
money. I needed to do more that the
local level to bring an independent | 0:53:23 | 0:53:28
expertise, people who did not have
an adherence to these old standards. | 0:53:28 | 0:53:32
And families have toxic water most
impunity is where so many do not | 0:53:32 | 0:53:37
have a voice. -- in communities were
so many do not have a voice. Flint | 0:53:37 | 0:53:44
is poor. The we did not matter. You
are looking at your children go | 0:53:44 | 0:53:51
through this 100,000 people and
knowing that none of them matter | 0:53:51 | 0:53:59
enough, that is hard to take. It was
a big issue during the election | 0:53:59 | 0:54:06
campaign and those people are still
without access to clean water. One | 0:54:06 | 0:54:10
woman who counted how many bottles
of water took to cook a Thanksgiving | 0:54:10 | 0:54:15
meal, she eagle and Flint having to
use 15 bottles of water to cook | 0:54:15 | 0:54:24
their meal. It is a real issue for
people clearly not just in Flint but | 0:54:24 | 0:54:30
adding the country. It is a question
of how much costs will be cut, make | 0:54:30 | 0:54:35
savings with services to people and
we're having this discussion as | 0:54:35 | 0:54:39
America is about to a big tax cut
plan which will not help with | 0:54:39 | 0:54:44
revenue. That has been a good CDs
that, we should get him on to talk | 0:54:44 | 0:54:49
about that. | 0:54:49 | 0:54:53
It's a time-honoured tradition
here in Washington - | 0:54:53 | 0:54:54
regardless of who occupies it -
the White House turns | 0:54:54 | 0:54:57
into tinsel-town. | 0:54:57 | 0:54:59
It was a first for Melania Trump
who unveiled the Christmas | 0:54:59 | 0:55:01
decorations to a group of children
from a nearby military base. | 0:55:01 | 0:55:06
Afterwards, she took part
in an arts and craft session, | 0:55:06 | 0:55:10
which appears to have won
the approval of those involved. | 0:55:10 | 0:55:15
Mrs Trump tweeted about
the festive frills - | 0:55:15 | 0:55:18
posting a video to her @FLOTUS
account, showing off | 0:55:18 | 0:55:20
the Christmas colours. | 0:55:20 | 0:55:23
The White House says
she designed it all herself. | 0:55:23 | 0:55:25
This year's theme
-"Time-Honored Traditions" - | 0:55:25 | 0:55:27
aims to pay respect to 200 years
of holiday traditions | 0:55:27 | 0:55:30
at the White House. | 0:55:30 | 0:55:33
And the centrepiece? | 0:55:33 | 0:55:34

into a replica of the White House. | 0:55:34 | 0:55:44
I think viewers will look just like
that when you make your post | 0:55:46 | 0:55:50
gingerbread will stop. I have
delegated to Mrs Fraser. Forget | 0:55:50 | 0:56:03 |
