Let me tell you, as a businessman for 50 years,

0:26:280:26:32

businesses do not want uncertainty.

0:26:320:26:35

Now, granted the EU is not the perfect place, far from it.

0:26:350:26:39

But you don't sort something out by running away from it.

0:26:390:26:42

You stick at it and you make it better

0:26:420:26:44

and you take advantage of what it offers -

0:26:440:26:47

of the 500 million customers that we can sell to,

0:26:470:26:50

of the foreign investors desperate to spend their cash here,

0:26:500:26:54

of the opportunities for our children and grandchildren.

0:26:540:26:57

Because this vote isn't just for our generation, it's for theirs.

0:26:570:27:02

Let me put it in very plain terms - this is not a general election.

0:27:020:27:06

This is not something that's going to come around in five years' time.

0:27:060:27:09

Oh, it didn't work. OK, well, we'll have another vote. No, no.

0:27:090:27:13

This is the most serious vote you most probably will ever make.

0:27:130:27:17

What we get as being a member of the European Union is full access

0:27:180:27:22

to the biggest market of consumers in the world -

0:27:220:27:26

over 500 million people -

0:27:260:27:28

and our ability to trade very freely with all of those economies.

0:27:280:27:33

For ordinary households, then, that means a wider range

0:27:330:27:36

of employment opportunities, hopefully higher-waged jobs

0:27:360:27:40

than they might otherwise get and potentially lower prices

0:27:400:27:43

than in a scenario where we left the European Union.

0:27:430:27:47

Of course, we don't know exactly what would happen if we left,

0:27:470:27:50

but that very uncertainty for economists

0:27:500:27:52

is something we would worry about.

0:27:520:27:54

The wages, the jobs,

0:27:550:27:57

the living standards of millions of British workers

0:27:570:28:01

directly depend upon our trading relationship

0:28:010:28:04

with the rest of Europe.

0:28:040:28:06

Many of the most important rights and protections that workers enjoy

0:28:060:28:10

in Britain depend on European measures.

0:28:100:28:13

The maternity rights, the right to paid holidays,

0:28:130:28:18

decent treatment of agency workers, part-time workers -

0:28:180:28:22

all of these things are underpinned by Europe

0:28:220:28:24

and are guaranteed by Europe and all would be at risk if we left.

0:28:240:28:28

None of the threats to our security and safety

0:28:290:28:32

have a single-nation solution.

0:28:320:28:34

The European Union is based on the simple principle

0:28:340:28:37

that there's safety in numbers.

0:28:370:28:39

Coming out of the European Union

0:28:390:28:41

would weaken Britain's voice in the world,

0:28:410:28:43

weaken our influence at a pivotal time in world history.

0:28:430:28:48

Europe is a wonderful continent,

0:28:490:28:51

but it's also the place where two terrible world wars began.

0:28:510:28:55

And those wars happened because of excessive competition,

0:28:550:28:59

rivalry and hate between nations.

0:28:590:29:02

That's been replaced in recent decades by family, community,

0:29:020:29:07

cooperation, collaboration

0:29:070:29:09

and that's what we need more than ever going forward.

0:29:090:29:12

Scientists know that progress comes from cooperation.

0:29:130:29:17

By working together in Europe we make our economy stronger,

0:29:180:29:23

we give ourselves more influence in the world

0:29:230:29:26

and we provide future opportunities for young people.

0:29:260:29:30

And leaving Europe would threaten Britain's status as a world leader

0:29:310:29:35

in science and innovation.

0:29:350:29:38

It's just not a risk worth taking.

0:29:380:29:41

On June 23, let's vote to make sure

0:29:420:29:45

Britain has a strong future in Europe.
