records. His famously long tongue

sees as. Shakespeare said the whole

We are all trying to figure out what

is all real. The only time we are as

trying to figure out what anyone

home alone and there is no one there

our home, people have something to

on. So, of course, everything is all

are a professional. But of course,

music is concerned, there are people

front rather than the music. I mean,

Before you, what was it? We wanted
four years ago to put together a | 0:02:28 | 0:02:35 | |
band no one ever saw on stage, to
write the songs that we believe in | 0:02:35 | 0:02:39 | |
and so on and to make, you know,
quite honestly a complete spectacle | 0:02:39 | 0:02:43 | |
out of ourselves, because critics
say that we are. You are downright | 0:02:43 | 0:02:48 | |
we do. We believe in giving folks
bang for their buck. The sad thing | 0:02:48 | 0:02:55 | |
is people putting in some act and

recently, when you look at the

word critics? One of the Guardian

earlier this year, he described it

masterclass in self-parody from day
one. Thank God the Guardian thought | 0:03:25 | 0:03:30 | |
that. Perhaps it is something you

Not at all. Not at all. I appreciate
the good will and good natured fun, | 0:03:37 | 0:03:42 | |
but I have a few houses the critics
have bought me. If those are bad | 0:03:42 | 0:03:48 | |
reviews, bring them on. Can you be
honest about how much is spectacle | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51 | |
rather than the music it is clearly
both. I don't want to get up on | 0:03:51 | 0:03:57 | |
stage with a band I am so proud of

be a slap in the face of the
audience. We also don't use backing | 0:04:01 | 0:04:05 | |
tracks or anything fake. We are
really a legitimate band. You said | 0:04:05 | 0:04:15 | |
yourself I am not an artist. That is
highly overused. It is not up to me | 0:04:15 | 0:04:20 | |
to decide if I am. It is up to the
people. For the people, by the | 0:04:20 | 0:04:25 | |
people. If someone does I am an
artist, I would say, who are you? | 0:04:25 | 0:04:30 | |
There are some people who write and
sing because they feel driven to do | 0:04:30 | 0:04:34 | |
it. Is that the same with you? I
don't want to tell you the facts of | 0:04:34 | 0:04:38 | |
life about those things. Those
people will tell you what you want | 0:04:38 | 0:04:41 | |
to hear. That is beautifully poetic.
Then privately they go back to their | 0:04:41 | 0:04:46 | |
mansions in the same way we do. And
the attention and the attraction of | 0:04:46 | 0:04:52 | |
this sex or the opposite sex, it is
all part of the game. People would | 0:04:52 | 0:04:58 | |
not do this if they got not a single
penny. OK, but do you still write | 0:04:58 | 0:05:04 | |
music? Are you still moved to do so?
I wrote a song two weeks ago called | 0:05:04 | 0:05:10 | |
Your Wish is My Command. Did you
write to make money? That is a good | 0:05:10 | 0:05:16 | |
point so the people who create stuff

process and afterwards they want to

nothing wrong with sitting down and

are hired by the wonderful and

for five decades and you are still

songs... Of course, we are! And

We have more fun than the Pope! It
when you first realise... You were | 0:09:30 | 0:09:38 | |
formed in 1873... 1873? In 1973 it
was a struggle to begin with but | 0:09:38 | 0:09:44 | |
suddenly you started selling
records. It wasn't about records. We | 0:09:44 | 0:09:48 | |
started selling at readings within a
year and a half of debuting. We sold | 0:09:48 | 0:09:52 | |
out in a home stadium. We were
headlining above bands around for | 0:09:52 | 0:09:58 | |
decades. -- Anaheim Stadium.
Something happened before records, | 0:09:58 | 0:10:04 | |
voicemail, anything, really. It
happened naturally. Critics never | 0:10:04 | 0:10:09 | |
gave us a quarter to get on a bus.
It happened because of the people! | 0:10:09 | 0:10:13 | |
And we continued... Our strongest
base, our strongest, you know, | 0:10:13 | 0:10:17 | |
support, comes from the people. And
that is our favourite thing. In for | 0:10:17 | 0:10:22 | |
running up debts to get the band
going, the money really started | 0:10:22 | 0:10:25 | |
rolling in. -- and from. Big. I
remember... My mother is from | 0:10:25 | 0:10:30 | |
Hungary and she continues to say how
is it going? She has this | 0:10:30 | 0:10:34 | |
wonderful... She still has no clue
who pays the money or who I work | 0:10:34 | 0:10:39 | |
for. She has been to one of your
concerts? She goes all the time and | 0:10:39 | 0:10:43 | |
she does my, you know, the hand
gesture, and all that, I love you. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:49 | |
Initially she went up and did not
realise I was on the other end of | 0:10:49 | 0:10:57 | |
the room. My life is so amazing...
But your life changed as a result of | 0:10:57 | 0:11:02 | |
that and as a result of the fact
that you were starting to make | 0:11:02 | 0:11:06 | |
money. It must have just changed so
the radically. Well, it dramatically | 0:11:06 | 0:11:09 | |
changed because I moved to Hollywood
and I sold out. I became ensconced, | 0:11:09 | 0:11:13 | |
which is a big word like gymnasium
and power and all that, but never | 0:11:13 | 0:11:18 | |
drugs, never boos, never alcohol. I
have still never been high or drunk | 0:11:18 | 0:11:23 | |
in my life. -- booze. I don't care
if anyone thinks I am making it up | 0:11:23 | 0:11:28 | |
or believes it. That is my choice in
life and you can do whatever you | 0:11:28 | 0:11:32 | |
want. I would never break my
mother's hard. She was 14 years of | 0:11:32 | 0:11:36 | |
age when she was in the
concentration camps of Nazi. -- | 0:11:36 | 0:11:41 | |
heart. I have no right to disappoint
her in any way. My mother is proud | 0:11:41 | 0:11:47 | |
of her son and I have done my job.
And it is because of your mother | 0:11:47 | 0:11:51 | |
that you thought I will not do
something that affects the health. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:55 | |
You are the only sign. It is about
not breaking her heart. She is 92 | 0:11:55 | 0:11:59 | |
and just kicking it. I am not

she continues to be the inspiration
that keeps me going straight, that | 0:12:05 | 0:12:08 | |
prevents me from drifting off to the
dark side, because, you know, the | 0:12:08 | 0:12:12 | |
papers are littered with people who
self abuse... But including your | 0:12:12 | 0:12:17 | |
bandmates, two of the original
members of the band have written | 0:12:17 | 0:12:20 | |
about their own problems with drugs,
Coke, and alcohol. Peter Greste said | 0:12:20 | 0:12:26 | |
I had a coke problem at the time.
Everyone was doing it. I never | 0:12:26 | 0:12:31 | |
did... I was so stupid and naive I
went on to a recording studio and | 0:12:31 | 0:12:38 | |
there was a mirror and I just had
artificial sweetener and coffee. I | 0:12:38 | 0:12:47 | |
thought someone had spilt some
sweetener but it was coke. I did not | 0:12:47 | 0:12:56 | |
know what it was in someone stopped
me amusing at. I rapidly learned to | 0:12:56 | 0:13:02 | |
stay away from losers. That is why
you got rid of two of the original | 0:13:02 | 0:13:07 | |
members of the band. Three different
times. They came around three | 0:13:07 | 0:13:10 | |
different times and lost fortunes
every time. Peter when writing about | 0:13:10 | 0:13:15 | |
it said it made him work harder, it
was fuel to him. Everyone gets | 0:13:15 | 0:13:20 | |
delusional with chemicals inside
their body. It is nonsense. Without | 0:13:20 | 0:13:24 | |
it I would not be creative, that
kind of... It is enabling. The truth | 0:13:24 | 0:13:28 | |
is you are born with everything you
need. Anything else you your body | 0:13:28 | 0:13:33 | |
numbs your mind and body, it is your
enemy. What was it like within the | 0:13:33 | 0:13:38 | |
band if you are alone in that? There
was huge tension. We had argument | 0:13:38 | 0:13:48 | |
and fight and lawyers get involved.
And of course, invariably, you had | 0:13:48 | 0:13:52 | |
to get rid of them. Because how can
you imagine playing in a football | 0:13:52 | 0:13:56 | |
team if you do not depend on them?
What if you are too high to | 0:13:56 | 0:14:00 | |
understand? We all lose. You did not
touch drink and drugs. The women, | 0:14:00 | 0:14:07 | |
though, that third element of the
rock and roll life, you really went | 0:14:07 | 0:14:10 | |
to town. It is all true. 4800 women
is supposedly your record. | 0:14:10 | 0:14:19 | |
One or two, whatever that is, that's
in the past. I'm married. I love my | 0:14:19 | 0:14:23 | |
wife, Shannon, and I waited like a
jackass, are you allowed to say that | 0:14:23 | 0:14:30 | |
word? That's fine. I am a jackass
and I have been all my life, I'm a | 0:14:30 | 0:14:35 | |
lonely child and it's like being in
a bakery and being on a diet, you're | 0:14:35 | 0:14:40 | |
in a rock band and everything gets
thrown in your face, the bad stuff, | 0:14:40 | 0:14:44 | |
women, all that stuff. I didn't want
to grow up, I was arrogant, self and | 0:14:44 | 0:14:49 | |
all that. It took for ever, it took
Shannon, my wife, my wife, my two | 0:14:49 | 0:14:54 | |
kids, Nick and Sophie, to kick me in
the nuts and make me grow up and be | 0:14:54 | 0:14:58 | |
a man. Your wife made you burn the
Polaroids which were the proof of | 0:14:58 | 0:15:03 | |
the 4800. It was a public thing, it
wasn't a secret. You put it behind | 0:15:03 | 0:15:10 | |
you but you have run into

things you said when he went to Fox

because you barged into a staff

You barged in and you opened up your

backstage and do whatever I want.

something and said whatever they

have people around me, like when I

everyone sees what I'm doing. You

on in a rock band somebody is coming

it's not true. I think the climate
is horrifically bad and yet at the | 0:16:48 | 0:16:53 | |
same time in powering to the right
women, there are some really bad | 0:16:53 | 0:16:57 | |
guys out there, I just happen not to

women say I happening to them, what

you and others lived through? The

they should go to the cops, the

do what the women did with Bill

would wake up at the crack of dawn

sure her son would turn out and

responsibility... You're going to

in America now to stop immigrants? I
