I think we are all grateful to the
Constitution committee to their | 0:24:24 | 0:24:29
pragmatic amendments to achieve the
objectives of the bill. We all want | 0:24:29 | 0:24:34
to avoid this becoming a fiendishly
complex process that weakens | 0:24:34 | 0:24:41
Parliamentary seven sovereignty. The
pro Minister has consistently argued | 0:24:41 | 0:24:48
that she wanted a clean bill, as if
in some way amendments made | 0:24:48 | 0:24:55
legislation dirty and impure.
Listening to the debates in the | 0:24:55 | 0:24:57
other place, I hope we have now
moved on from such ridiculous | 0:24:57 | 0:25:06
notions and accompanying sabre
rattling we have seen before. The | 0:25:06 | 0:25:10
government itself has pledged to
table a moment to address issues | 0:25:10 | 0:25:13
such as devolution settlement and
MPs across the comments have said | 0:25:13 | 0:25:17
that this house can be helpful on
unresolved issues. We have even seen | 0:25:17 | 0:25:22
rare harmony on the Conservative
benches as former Attorney General, | 0:25:22 | 0:25:33
Cam Clark and the Leader of the
House of Lords -- Ken Clarke and the | 0:25:33 | 0:25:38
father of the House all came
together. I welcome the condiment | 0:25:38 | 0:25:44
from Andrea Leadsom last week when
she said that noble Lords play a | 0:25:44 | 0:25:47
very important proviso reroll for
which we are grateful, and they have | 0:25:47 | 0:25:53
the expertise that the common
benefits from. We welcome that | 0:25:53 | 0:25:58
opportunity. Before we get carried
away, a brief constitutional | 0:25:58 | 0:26:05
reminder that any amendments passed
by the House here provide a further | 0:26:05 | 0:26:12
opportunity for consideration by MPs
who have the final say. My Lords, | 0:26:12 | 0:26:15
for those who criticise that role, I
want to emphasise again, a point | 0:26:15 | 0:26:20
that I have made before. The process
of Brexit is too important and too | 0:26:20 | 0:26:24
complex to be left to those who have
no doubt. Because only doubt brings | 0:26:24 | 0:26:33
questioning. And it is only through
questioning that we examine and | 0:26:33 | 0:26:36
issue enough to make sure we get the
detail right. Too often, the | 0:26:36 | 0:26:43
government had put off tough
decisions. We have heard in our | 0:26:43 | 0:26:48
questions, the financial services
sector is crying out for the | 0:26:48 | 0:26:50
government to publish of future
partnership planning, none has been | 0:26:50 | 0:26:59
forthcoming and the responses have
been complacent at best. 19 months | 0:26:59 | 0:27:05
since the referendum, it
unacceptable that the government had | 0:27:05 | 0:27:07
not got a grip on issues concerning
Northern Ireland, our crown | 0:27:07 | 0:27:12
dependencies and overseas. We have
not seen a credible way of | 0:27:12 | 0:27:22 |
