Tonight in Newsnight Scotland, in two years time, the Commonwealth | :00:14. | :00:21.
Games take place in Glasgow. He says he wants to be aired. -- be | :00:21. | :00:25.
there. But what of the organisers doing to ensure that the | :00:25. | :00:27.
Commonwealth Games lives up to the Olympics? | :00:27. | :00:32.
Chris Hoy, Usain Bolt and Jessica Ennis could all be enacts and -- in | :00:32. | :00:34.
action in the Commonwealth Games, and it seemed that enthusiasm is | :00:34. | :00:39.
growing in the City fans to the population of -- popular -- | :00:39. | :00:43.
popularity of the Olympics. Today, the Glasgow organisers are in | :00:44. | :00:53.
| :00:54. | :00:54. | ||
London to learn what they can. The pedalling into the history books. | :00:54. | :00:58.
Sir Chris Hoy wins his 6th gold medal to become Britain's's most | :00:58. | :01:03.
successful Olympian. He reflected on what he had achieved and what | :01:03. | :01:10.
may lie ahead. This is phenomenal. Glasgow, that | :01:10. | :01:16.
is another question. If I can keep going to Glasgow, that would be the | :01:16. | :01:23.
dream ending for me. A piece of gold-plated publicity | :01:23. | :01:26.
for the Commonwealth Games organisers as they have to harness | :01:27. | :01:31.
the buzz created by the London Olympics. If Scotland's cycling | :01:31. | :01:36.
superstar does compete in 2014, he will not be the only athlete going | :01:36. | :01:42.
for gold in a venue named after him. Today, as the nation basked in his | :01:42. | :01:49.
glory, work was going on it at the Sir Chris Hoy velodrome. The aim is | :01:49. | :01:56.
that Glasgow is ready in two years' time. As the construction workers | :01:56. | :02:01.
sweltered under some restaurants -- sunshine, eg detective engaged in | :02:01. | :02:08.
some carefully timed promotion. Team GB has done fantastically, and | :02:08. | :02:12.
Scottish athlete are part of that, and they have been an inspiration. | :02:12. | :02:17.
It has really driven people's interest in Glasgow 2014, from a | :02:17. | :02:27.
| :02:27. | :02:29. | ||
social media standpoint, it has Such has been the success of the | :02:29. | :02:33.
Scottish athlete in Team GB, Glasgow 2014 organisers are | :02:33. | :02:40.
claiming an Olympic balance. While excitement in the, what games has | :02:40. | :02:47.
created an increased ticket demand. So does a trip to London's East End | :02:47. | :02:52.
back up their findings? How do you feel about the Commonwealth Games | :02:52. | :02:57.
coming to hear? I feel it will be good. By John not | :02:57. | :03:03.
interested in the Olympics? No, too much to do. | :03:03. | :03:08.
But I am interested in things other swimming and diving now. | :03:08. | :03:17.
Give it another six months, and the hype will die down. 2014, the real | :03:17. | :03:23.
Olympics, in Glasgow! But while sporting success has been | :03:23. | :03:27.
the dominating theme of London 2012, they have been issues dragging the | :03:27. | :03:34.
horizon. Problems with G4S left the -- led to the army been called in | :03:34. | :03:38.
at the last minute, not part of the original plan. NT seat at venues | :03:38. | :03:42.
also less red faces for London 2012 officials, had outrage from members | :03:42. | :03:46.
of the public's desperate for tickets. | :03:46. | :03:50.
We are looking at things a bit differently in some areas, in terms | :03:50. | :03:56.
of how we engage up. We are looking at things such as capacity at | :03:56. | :04:00.
different engagement in terms of the public and so forth, and how we | :04:00. | :04:05.
can do things smarter. There is no question that ticketing and | :04:05. | :04:14.
security have been the hot topics in the world and media. I think | :04:14. | :04:24.
| :04:24. | :04:25. | ||
Four athletes and officials alike, the road to success is lined with | :04:25. | :04:33.
potential pitfalls. Avoiding them will soon be Glasgow's | :04:33. | :04:38.
responsibility. I enjoyed by the chief executive of | :04:38. | :04:44.
20 -- Glasgow 2014, David Grevenberg. The deed of Glasgow | :04:44. | :04:48.
Council is also here, and Professor of sport at Edinburgh University, | :04:48. | :04:53.
Grant Jarvie, is in the studio in Edinburgh. A few things on the | :04:53. | :04:56.
technicalities of this. Ticketing problems they have had at the | :04:56. | :05:02.
Olympics in London. How do you get round that? Does the Commonwealth | :05:02. | :05:06.
Games have the same problems? The problems in London seemed to be | :05:06. | :05:10.
with these Olympic friends tickets. The Commonwealth Games are | :05:10. | :05:14.
different. That is one of the expectations to be managed. The, | :05:14. | :05:18.
what games are fundamentally different, a smaller capacity of | :05:18. | :05:22.
venues address tickets on sale. But it does not mean that the | :05:22. | :05:29.
performance is any less attractive. -- the Commonwealth Games. | :05:29. | :05:38.
But you will have to the OAPs? -- of the I P is? | :05:38. | :05:44.
You do have tickets back to be purchased by sponsors, for example, | :05:44. | :05:51.
but it is a purchasing situation where all tickets are on sale. | :05:51. | :05:56.
How will you get round the problem in London where by, say, in the | :05:56. | :06:00.
swirling, the seating that was allocated to the Friends of the | :06:00. | :06:04.
Olympics, the Olympic family, were largely empty? | :06:04. | :06:08.
The difference is that there is accredited seating for people with | :06:08. | :06:16.
accreditation. They can get in there based on their association. | :06:16. | :06:19.
In the Commonwealth Games, there are some of those, but it is a | :06:19. | :06:23.
different size and scope. We will be looking at policies around | :06:23. | :06:28.
ticketing and accreditation of to the cat smarter ways to make sure | :06:28. | :06:34.
we cannot achieve three areas. We want full stadia, because all the | :06:34. | :06:37.
testimony coming in from athletes is that the buzz of the crowd, that | :06:37. | :06:40.
full stadium makes an enormous difference, particularly for a home | :06:41. | :06:45.
crowd. Secondly, we want an accessible and inclusive games, We | :06:45. | :06:50.
want to reach two in wide audience. Throughout Scotland, throughout | :06:50. | :06:54.
Glasgow and throughout the Commonwealth. Thirdly, we want to | :06:54. | :06:59.
reach our ticket revenue. The other thing people have been | :06:59. | :07:03.
going on about is the lottery for tickets in London. Are you selling | :07:03. | :07:09.
them in a different way? We are not sure yet. The lesson | :07:10. | :07:13.
learnt is absolutely critical, had we will look at it. | :07:13. | :07:17.
The other issue at the beginning was security. I presume you will | :07:17. | :07:23.
not be hiring G4S to run security? We are in the process of going | :07:23. | :07:29.
through our security procurement. survey are in with a chance?! | :07:29. | :07:34.
They will be considered, along with all. Why don't you get the army | :07:34. | :07:37.
and? Everyone loves them. The the experience has been | :07:37. | :07:42.
brilliant. The armed forces have been brilliant. Is that not an | :07:43. | :07:47.
option? Can you actually just say you would | :07:47. | :07:53.
like the Army to do it? Everything costs, at one of the things that | :07:53. | :07:58.
has been recognised, and we have recognised, is that it is quite | :07:58. | :08:03.
early days, but we want a safe and secure gains. We want a games that | :08:03. | :08:08.
has a firm hand when necessary, but also a discrete elements. | :08:09. | :08:14.
This is the first good news G4S have had since the Olympics opened! | :08:15. | :08:19.
Gordon, what much -- what must concern you is this thing to that | :08:19. | :08:23.
discussion earlier, where it is well-established that the economic | :08:23. | :08:26.
effect in the centre of London has been negative over the course of | :08:26. | :08:31.
the games, rather than about they were expecting? | :08:31. | :08:35.
De Commonwealth Games are the largest sporting and cultural event | :08:35. | :08:42.
that stock that has ever hosted. The issues around London, I think, | :08:42. | :08:52.
| :08:52. | :08:53. | ||
weapon to be linked to the publicity,... They were actively | :08:53. | :08:58.
encouraged to think, people went to go on holiday, or they work from | :08:58. | :09:05.
home. If there are more people employed in the tourism sector in | :09:05. | :09:14.
Glasgow. How will you stop that happening in London? -- in Glasgow? | :09:14. | :09:20.
The scale is different. We expect a buzzing city. A when you say the | :09:20. | :09:25.
scale, where the Olympics are, arguably, it is almost a small part | :09:25. | :09:30.
of London, compared to the West End? | :09:30. | :09:34.
Were warned not face the same issues that a world city facing the | :09:34. | :09:39.
Olympic -- hosting the Olympic Games will face. The other thing is | :09:39. | :09:43.
all the advantages that come to host cities after the Games. We do | :09:43. | :09:49.
have a buzzing city during the games and all the legacy as well. | :09:49. | :09:59.
Grant Jarvie in Edinburgh? Are you convinced of the legacy, the game | :09:59. | :10:09.
| :10:09. | :10:10. | ||
is worth the candle in what they Yes, it's definitely worth it. | :10:10. | :10:15.
Glasgow has learned a lot in comparison with what other cities | :10:15. | :10:20.
have done. Scotland has a very good track record in attracting major | :10:20. | :10:25.
sporting events to the country. We are punching well of our weight for | :10:25. | :10:30.
a population of 5 million people. So the London Olympic Games and | :10:30. | :10:34.
what we learn from that is just part of a journey that has been | :10:34. | :10:38.
going on for some time. If we have learned from Barcelona... For for | :10:38. | :10:46.
example, what have we learned from London? Well, I think in particular | :10:46. | :10:50.
just how important sport is. If you listen to the stories of the | :10:50. | :10:56.
athletes, there are some real human stories there. So there shall shall | :10:56. | :11:03.
value of sport... We have respect we sort of knew that sport was | :11:03. | :11:07.
important to sportsmen. I mean in terms of what lessons you take into | :11:07. | :11:12.
Glasgow, that have specifically, out of the Olympics? Well, we know | :11:12. | :11:18.
we have to have a long history of sport -- hosting events, and | :11:18. | :11:28.
Glasgow has that. So we will take up what we learn that -- from | :11:28. | :11:32.
bidding for the Ryder Cup, and Scotland has been really successful, | :11:32. | :11:38.
not just in attracting one major sporting event, but we have a | :11:38. | :11:41.
capacity and a capability, and we have learned a lot. Not all | :11:41. | :11:46.
countries and cities have that knowledge, to successfully secured | :11:46. | :11:54.
and win a major sporting events. All right. Undoubtedly people have | :11:54. | :11:58.
been glued to the television set, but you presumably would like that | :11:58. | :12:05.
at misfit to continue for the next two years. -- atmosphere. In a | :12:05. | :12:10.
couple of months' time, people will have forgotten about it. We have | :12:10. | :12:16.
been very focused on building our foundations, building confidence in | :12:16. | :12:20.
terms of our programme as a partnership and an organising | :12:20. | :12:26.
committee. We are a partnership in terms of the Scottish Government, | :12:26. | :12:31.
Glasgow City Council, the Commonwealth Games Federation. It | :12:31. | :12:37.
is all hands on deck, and we have a slew of other stakeholders. We now | :12:37. | :12:43.
move into a phase of engagement, and tried -- start to get people | :12:43. | :12:46.
very excited through the volunteering programme, through our | :12:46. | :12:51.
ticket sales campaigns... In the year you will be having the Games, | :12:51. | :12:56.
there may be a referendum on Scotland becoming independent. Is | :12:56. | :13:03.
that it destruction for you, or is it helpful for you? -- is that a | :13:03. | :13:11.
distraction for you? Very briefly - most cities do not get much of a | :13:11. | :13:18.
legacy from the Games. Why do you keep trying for things like this? | :13:18. | :13:21.
Because of Reading Glasgow companies have won 100 Nitin | :13:21. | :13:31.
| :13:31. | :13:31. | ||
million pounds of contracts -- 180 million of contracts. Legacy is | :13:31. | :13:39.
what it lasts. And if you can offer a done people... If you can create | :13:39. | :13:44.
jobs in the city, and give young people jobs -- skills for life, it | :13:44. | :13:51.
is about the Agassi, precisely. Thank you all very much. | :13:51. | :13:56.
