It kills more people in Wales ..and colon cancer combined,

A woman who was close to dying ..calls for better awareness

:00:22.:00:27.

..which kills 2,000 people in Wales every year.

:00:27.:00:33.

The Welsh Government promises a new campaign...

:00:33.:00:37.

..to promote Welsh-medium education.

:00:37.:00:40.

A final tribute on the Isle of Wight...

:00:40.:00:44.

..for the rugby player and broadcaster Cliff Morgan.

:00:44.:00:48.

And we'll hear from Non Stanford, the Welsh athlete...

:00:48.:00:52.

..within one race of the being World Triathlon Champion.

:00:52.:00:57.

I can't wait to take part in the race on Saturday.

:00:57.:01:14.

Good evening.

:01:14.:01:16.

It's a condition which kills almost 2,000 people in Wales every year.

:01:16.:01:21.

If it isn't treated quickly enough, one in three people with Sepsis die.

:01:21.:01:26.

But would you recognise the symptoms?

:01:26.:01:30.

The number of cases increases by 10% every year...

:01:30.:01:34.

..and a new campaign is being launched to recognise...

:01:34.:01:39.

..the early signs of blood poisoning, or septicemia.

:01:40.:02:03.

This

:02:03.:02:05.

This woman

:02:05.:02:05.

This woman was

:02:05.:02:17.

was taken ill. I don't know when it started. It could have developed

:02:17.:02:27.

over time. I was very ill. One thing I do remember is that a number of

:02:27.:02:36.

college friends came in to see me and I was living on my own inner

:02:36.:02:41.

room at the time and they took my parents one side and said they

:02:41.:02:48.

didn't realise how ill I was. occurs when the body overreacts to

:02:48.:02:55.

an illness. If it is not treated quickly the organs fail and

:02:55.:03:00.

statistics suggest a third of people with the condition die. Sepsis

:03:00.:03:06.

claims over 1800 lives in Wales every year. Across Britain, the

:03:06.:03:14.

figure is 37,000. That means someone dies from sepsis every 14 minutes.

:03:14.:03:20.

That is more than breast cancer and: Cancer. The health Minister came to

:03:20.:03:25.

meet these patients at the University Hospital of Wales in

:03:25.:03:30.

Cardiff as they marked National sepsis day. We are fortunate in

:03:30.:03:37.

Wales because we have had a campaign for a number of years and we can use

:03:37.:03:42.

the techniques they have developed over the years to help the staff who

:03:42.:03:49.

work in the field to recognise sepsis and to understand what they

:03:49.:03:59.

can do to treat it. But what are the symptoms? According to the British

:03:59.:04:09.

sepsis society, they include speaking clearly, going for hours

:04:09.:04:14.

without passing water and being short of breath, but it can be

:04:14.:04:23.

relatively easy to treat. We monitor the patient and then we ask a doctor

:04:23.:04:33.

to give them antibiotics and fluids. This woman considers herself very

:04:33.:04:47.

Almost a year after she was ..April Jones' parents are planning

:04:47.:04:50.

They hope an inquest on Monday will allow them to bury...

:04:50.:04:54.

..the remains discovered at Mark Bridger's home.

:04:54.:04:58.

The five-year-old disappeared from her home in Machynlleth...

:04:58.:05:02.

..on October 1st last year.

:05:02.:05:05.

Almost a thousand women have made appointments for blood tests...

:05:05.:05:09.

..after finding out they could have been infected with Hepatitis C.

:05:09.:05:13.

Over 5,000 patients at three hospitals in Wales...

:05:13.:05:17.

..have been warned of the slight risk after a health worker...

:05:17.:05:22.

..who treated them between 1978 and 2003 was taken ill.

:05:22.:05:26.

The Welsh Government is promising a new campaign in the autumn...

:05:26.:05:30.

..to provide information to parents...

:05:30.:05:33.

..on the advantages of a Welsh-medium education.

:05:33.:05:36.

It comes as experts from across the world meet in Carmarthen...

:05:36.:05:40.

..to discuss the benefits of a bilingual education.

:05:40.:05:55.

Fewer

:05:55.:05:55.

Fewer than

:05:55.:05:55.

Fewer than a

:05:55.:06:00.

Wales receive a bilingual education at a time when the number of Welsh

:06:00.:06:07.

speakers is falling. However, the advantages of a bilingual education

:06:07.:06:10.

are obvious, according to experts who have gathered at Trinity

:06:10.:06:16.

College. There is evidence that bilingual children are better able

:06:16.:06:21.

to focus their attention. They have better awareness of language and

:06:21.:06:24.

what you can do with language, because they have had more

:06:25.:06:33.

experience in processing language. Even the meerkat has learned Welsh.

:06:33.:06:38.

But is enough being done to promote bilingual education in Wales?

:06:38.:06:40.

According to the Welsh Language Board, the Welsh Government could do

:06:40.:06:48.

more. Part of the process is to make sure that information is provided.

:06:48.:06:56.

The other thing is political support. The Welsh Government needs

:06:56.:07:00.

to be far more proactive in explaining the advantages of a

:07:00.:07:08.

bilingual education. Both for individuals and the country.

:07:08.:07:11.

Welsh Government says there will be a campaign in the autumn to provide

:07:11.:07:15.

parents with all the facts to help them choose the right education for

:07:16.:07:26.

their children. In Carmarthen, this man says his children received a

:07:26.:07:29.

bilingual education. I think it paid off because they are in university

:07:29.:07:41.

now. Have you got children? No. you did, would you want them to have

:07:41.:07:49.

a bilingual education? Yes. Welsh would be their first language.

:07:49.:07:56.

gives them a good start in life. There needs to be more emphasis on

:07:56.:08:08.

the Welsh language. Should people have the choice? Of course. But

:08:08.:08:17.

people make better decisions if they have the relevant information.

:08:17.:08:28.

will have to wait for the campaign Welshpool Hospital has received

:08:28.:08:36.

The Fire Service was called after a main burst.

:08:36.:08:39.

Utilities company Severn Trent have apologised.

:08:39.:08:42.

More than a hundred iPads have been stolen from a school in Cardiff.

:08:42.:08:47.

The theft, worth 34,000, at Ysgol Melin Gruffydd in Whitchurch...

:08:47.:08:50.

..was reported at the start of the new term.

:08:50.:08:54.

The school says the issue is in the hands of the insurance company.

:10:36.:10:47.

grateful to everyone who helped make it a reality. I often walk with my

:10:47.:10:53.

friends in this area and it is nice to see it. It is a nice place to

:10:53.:11:02.

come and think. The Gleision Colliery is just above us, which

:11:02.:11:06.

means it literally casts a shadow over the memorial. But it is hoped

:11:06.:11:09.

this memorial will help people get over what happened here two years

ago. Meanwhile the managers face charges of manslaughter through

gross negligence and the owners, MNS Mining, faced charges of corporate

than usual today. The hearse arrived carrying the red Dragon. Here's one

:13:34.:13:39.

of the nicest men I have ever met. He treated everyone the same. He is

:13:39.:13:46.

a big loss for rugby in Wales, for Wales as a country. There were

:13:47.:13:53.

famous faces and friends from all over the country. They wanted to pay

the last tribute to Cliff, a Welshman through and through.

from a village in the top of the valleys. It had an influence on

everyone who was born there. Everyone loved Cliff. And he loved

everyone else. The 1973 match he will always be synonymous with that.

500 people were expected here today, which means many mourners are

listening to the story of that try outside. This is Gareth Edwards, a

dramatic start. What a score. Everywhere I go, people ask me, how

:14:54.:15:01.

is Cliff Morgan? It comes down to that try. How will you remember

:15:02.:15:10.

Cliff? A kind man who always had time for everyone. He had strong

:15:10.:15:17.

opinions, but he was there for you. I got to know him more as a man who

:15:17.:15:34.

was a lot of fun. There were plenty of memories shared here today.

:15:34.:15:43.

struck me then was the clarity of his thinking. There was something

:15:43.:15:50.

special about him. It is a very sad day. At the same time we wanted to

:15:50.:15:54.

thank him for everything he did, not just on the rugby field and on

television. He was such a nice person. The close family finally

In the

:18:20.:18:20.

In the water,

:18:20.:18:27.

feet, the years of training are paying off. With a victory in Madrid

:18:27.:18:33.

in June and three silver medals during the series, Non Stanford has

:18:33.:18:41.

her eye on the top spot. It has been an excellent season. Last year I

:18:41.:18:45.

never thought I would be in this position going into the grand final.

:18:45.:18:52.

So I am really looking forward to Saturday. And this is the finish

:18:52.:19:10.

line. The race will start in Hyde Park tomorrow morning. Before she

:19:10.:19:13.

swims, cycles and runs to the finishing line. This is how it

:19:13.:19:21.

stands at the moment. Non Stanford is in third place. The winner of the

:19:21.:19:38.

final race will collect 1200 points. It is very close at the top. If she

:19:38.:19:42.

can finish ahead of the two athletes above her, she will be crowned world

:19:42.:19:51.

champion. I am hoping to finish on the podium. That is my goal. But I

:19:51.:19:57.

do put a lot of pressure on myself because I want to do well. I have to

:19:57.:20:04.

do my best and that is all I can do. After swimming, cycling and

:20:05.:20:09.

running, by 10:30am tomorrow morning Non Stanford could be world

:20:09.:20:20.

champion. That would come a year after winning the title for those

faint-hearted. On the sides of the Cliff in Abereiddy, these brave

:20:55.:21:00.

souls have to be at their best every time they perform. One mistake and

:21:00.:21:09.

the consequences could be tragic. Especially as it is Friday the 13th.

:21:09.:21:15.

The World Cliff Diving Championships have returned to Wales this year.

:21:15.:21:20.

From the moment the diver leave the platform it takes three seconds to

:21:20.:21:29.

reach the water. You have got to admire their bravery. The platform

:21:29.:21:34.

is 27 metres high. When they hit the water, they are travelling at over

:21:34.:21:40.

50 miles an hour. This is part of a global circuit and there are three

:21:40.:21:47.

Brits among the 12 competitors. do a lot of work in Olympic diving

:21:47.:21:53.

pools but there is no way to train at 27 metres. So we have got to do

:21:53.:21:59.

the best we can with what we have got. 2500 people are expected to

:21:59.:22:07.

visit today and tomorrow, with every ticket sold. They are mad! When you

:22:07.:22:14.

see how hard -- how high the diving board is, it is nuts. Hitting the

:22:14.:22:20.

water is the problem, but they all come out all right. The event is a

:22:20.:22:28.

major boost for tourism in the area. We have got 70 members of staff

:22:28.:22:33.

staying in the local area. There are members of the security teams and

:22:33.:22:43.

the logistic teams. There are also 200 people staying nearby campus --

:22:43.:22:47.

nearby campsite. The competition will continue tomorrow with the

..as Festival Number 6 is held There's a stage for performers

:23:05.:23:09.

..the Clough Stage, named after the man who created...

:23:09.:23:12.

..this Italian village in Gwynedd.

:23:12.:23:15.

Dafydd Gwynn is in Portmeirion for us tonight.

:23:15.:23:19.

Yr Ods, Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog and Geraint Jarman...

:23:19.:23:24.

..have all performed on the Clough Stage...

:23:24.:23:29.

..but the entertainment continues on the Main Stage.

:23:29.:23:33.

In such a small place, it's hard to believe...

:23:33.:23:36.

..how much will be going on between now and Sunday night.

:23:36.:23:50.

The

:23:50.:23:50.

The festival's

:23:50.:23:50.

The festival's good

:23:50.:23:56.

very quickly since last year. There are plenty of people here again this

:23:56.:24:04.

year. It is excellent. I can't wait to see the Manic Street Preachers.

:24:04.:24:14.

We are here for three days. Despite my age we are camping. I go to a lot

:24:14.:24:27.

of festivals anyway. It is fantastic. I would say it is very

:24:27.:24:37.

well organised. There is plenty going on. Many people have said this

:24:37.:24:40.

festival is unlike any other and the main reason for that is the

:24:40.:24:53.

location. There are so many different highlights. Jan Morris is

:24:53.:24:59.

going to read from a book she has written. And you are trying to build

:24:59.:25:06.

on the success of last year. Exactly. We were delighted last year

:25:06.:25:15.

and we are hoping to develop the festival. We are expecting around

:25:15.:25:22.

10,000 people. But you can't organise the weather. Sadly not. I

:25:22.:25:28.

am sure it will be better tomorrow! But everyone seems to be happy and

:25:28.:25:38.

having a good time. With so much going on everyone is enjoying

:25:38.:25:42.

themselves. The entertainment continues tonight into the early

:25:42.:26:02.

hours. The music on the smaller stage has come to an end but there

:26:02.:26:07.

is still plenty going on on the main stage. The highlight is on Sunday

:26:07.:26:22.

night, with the performance of the A campaign to inform people

:26:22.:26:35.

It kills almost 2,000 people And international experts

:26:35.:26:42.

The Welsh Government promises a new campaign in the autumn.
