Hello, I'm Ross Atkins. We will start with one image from Syria | :00:14. | :00:22.
which has focused the world on the suffering that continues there. This | :00:23. | :00:27.
video shows a five-year-old boy in Aleppo. It is believed he was | :00:28. | :00:34.
injured in an air strike last night. The UN says no aid is reaching | :00:35. | :00:44.
besieged areas of the city. Not one convoy because one thing, fighting. | :00:45. | :00:53.
Police in Rio say a group of US swimmers made up a story that they | :00:54. | :00:58.
were robbed to cover up an incident where they broke down a door at a | :00:59. | :01:01.
petrol station. We will have more on that. An | :01:02. | :01:05.
incredible day for the Brownlee brothers who took gold and silver in | :01:06. | :01:09.
the triathlon. Plus, we will talk about Google's plans to use | :01:10. | :01:16.
driverless cars in the US within the next two weeks -- Buber -- Uber's | :01:17. | :01:28.
plans to use driverless cars. Such has been the torrent of | :01:29. | :01:44.
disturbing images from Syria that there is a risk we will become | :01:45. | :01:49.
desensitised to the horror that they show. Today though one video is | :01:50. | :01:55.
demanding the world's attention. There is a little boy covered in | :01:56. | :02:02.
dust and sitting in the back of an ambulance. The boy is not screaming | :02:03. | :02:09.
or crying. He appears in shock. He is one of a number of children who | :02:10. | :02:14.
were injured in an air strike on a rebel held part of the city. Aleppo | :02:15. | :02:23.
is usually important in the battle for the control of Syria. It is the | :02:24. | :02:26.
biggest city in the north, as you can see. You can see how the city | :02:27. | :02:35.
is. The purple is areas controlled by the rebels. The green is | :02:36. | :02:40.
controlled by the government. Today, UN Syria envoy has had this to say. | :02:41. | :02:47.
In Syria, what we are hearing and seeing is only fighting, offensives, | :02:48. | :02:55.
counteroffensive is, rockets, barrel bombs, mortars, cannons, napalm, | :02:56. | :03:05.
chlorine, snipers, air strikes, suicide bombers. Not one single | :03:06. | :03:15.
convoy in one month has reached any of the humanitarian besieged areas. | :03:16. | :03:25.
Not one single convoy. He clarified those comments later to say no aid | :03:26. | :03:31.
had reached besieged areas of Aleppo since the beginning of August. | :03:32. | :03:34.
Needless to say, that aid is desperately needed. The doctor who | :03:35. | :03:41.
treated that five-year-old boy, earlier speaking to BBC World | :03:42. | :03:44.
Service radio described those moments. | :03:45. | :03:52.
Last night, Omran came to our hospital. He did not cry, because he | :03:53. | :04:02.
was shocked at what had happened to him. We cleaned his face and suited | :04:03. | :04:09.
his wounds and treated the wound in his head. He was discharged after | :04:10. | :04:19.
two hours after we treated him and he is lucky because he had the only | :04:20. | :04:29.
wound in his head and it was treated. That was part of an | :04:30. | :04:35.
interview earlier. Earlier, I spoke to Lyse Doucet who made a | :04:36. | :04:39.
documentary for the BBC called children of Syria. | :04:40. | :04:44.
It is quite extraordinary. Syrians are saying the world has forgotten | :04:45. | :04:49.
them and then this image of a little boy who seems to symbolise the | :04:50. | :04:56.
suffering of children like him who live under the daily bombardment in | :04:57. | :04:59.
Aleppo. He was pulled from the rubble of his home in the dark at | :05:00. | :05:05.
night, woken up, and you saw the bewildered look on his face. He was | :05:06. | :05:09.
pushed in an ambulance and from that moment he sat on his own. It seems | :05:10. | :05:14.
to symbolise Syria's feeling alone in the world as well. | :05:15. | :05:33.
The image has gone viral. It is like the image of the little boy who | :05:34. | :05:47.
washed up on the shore. I was going to ask you when one image has such | :05:48. | :05:59.
an impact, it can translate into action? The UN diplomat is very | :06:00. | :06:06.
polished, he is not known for speaking out. You could see from his | :06:07. | :06:11.
comments he has reached the end of his patients. They in, day out, they | :06:12. | :06:16.
have been pleading for even a 48-hour truce. Now Russia has | :06:17. | :06:21.
announced there will be one but it is only a respite. Syria's war is | :06:22. | :06:25.
not only the most punishing of our time, it is the most entangled. It | :06:26. | :06:30.
is not as Russia who has two act, there is Iran, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, | :06:31. | :06:41.
there are all the warring States and also Islamic State. The biggest | :06:42. | :06:47.
prize is Aleppo now. Sadly, however shocking these images are, it will | :06:48. | :06:54.
not stop. While all of us are looking at this particular video, | :06:55. | :06:59.
all Syrians know, you know, there are children's most days, if not | :07:00. | :07:03.
every day in Syria, experiencing trauma like that little boy. It is | :07:04. | :07:11.
one image, it is such an arresting, troubling image. It was just one | :07:12. | :07:15.
little boy, I'm sure many people looked at that and they will have | :07:16. | :07:19.
seen boys elsewhere, maybe they have fallen and scraped themselves and a | :07:20. | :07:23.
bit shocked and dazed. This morning I went through social media and | :07:24. | :07:30.
there were lots of other pictures of children in Syria, also in Yemen and | :07:31. | :07:40.
other countries. Children outside Damascus, in distress, suffering, | :07:41. | :07:43.
crying, none of those are on the world's radar today. It was Omran, | :07:44. | :07:48.
the five-year-old, who has really touched a chord, but the court will | :07:49. | :07:53.
resonate sadly for only a short amount of time. In Syria, every step | :07:54. | :07:59.
matters a lot and this may be a big one. | :08:00. | :08:01.
Thank you. If you want more background on the conflict you can | :08:02. | :08:05.
find it on the BBC news at and the BBC News website. | :08:06. | :08:09.
Let's turn to this very strange story from Rio and the four Olympic | :08:10. | :08:14.
swimmers and the alleged armed robbery. Police are saying they made | :08:15. | :08:21.
the whole thing up to cover up an incident at a petrol station. Let's | :08:22. | :08:27.
take the story from the start. August the night, Ryan Lochte wins | :08:28. | :08:31.
gold as part of the US men's 400 metre relay team. Then on August 14 | :08:32. | :08:40.
he describes in detail how men pretending to be police officers | :08:41. | :08:44.
attacked him and three others. These are quotes from Ryan Lochte. He | :08:45. | :08:48.
said: they pulled out their guns, they told the other swimmers to get | :08:49. | :08:53.
down on the ground. He took our money, he took my wallet, he left | :08:54. | :08:58.
myself open, he left by credentials. On Tuesday, Lochte flies home. On | :08:59. | :09:06.
Wednesday, two of the other swimmers are detained at Rio airport. That | :09:07. | :09:11.
brings us to today. The Brazilian authorities said the swimmers got | :09:12. | :09:15.
into an argument at a petrol station. They broke down a toilet | :09:16. | :09:19.
door. In other words, the police say the swimmers lied about what | :09:20. | :09:25.
happened. We can bring in the BBC's Chris Mitchell in Rio. It is hard to | :09:26. | :09:29.
predict where this story will go next. | :09:30. | :09:35.
It is unbelievable. It is very strange and close to a diplomatic | :09:36. | :09:43.
incident in a way. The judge handling the incident has the | :09:44. | :09:48.
passports of the two swimmers and there is no indication when they | :09:49. | :09:53.
will get those passports back. Ryan Lochte is one of the most successful | :09:54. | :09:58.
swimmers in the world. In America he is second only to Michael Phelps. | :09:59. | :10:04.
Here is a man who recently had his own TV show. He is a big | :10:05. | :10:11.
personality. The chief of police said basically, they got into an | :10:12. | :10:14.
argument at this petrol station, that Lochte was hot tempered, that | :10:15. | :10:24.
is the word that he used. No gun was brandished. It was actually the US | :10:25. | :10:31.
swimmers, the four of them, that could be accused of vandalism, | :10:32. | :10:35.
perhaps damage to a toilet door, ripping the sign off a wall. It is | :10:36. | :10:39.
incredible. The other way of looking at it is you had four young men who | :10:40. | :10:44.
had been competing at the Games. Ryan Lochte got a gold medal. They | :10:45. | :10:48.
had let their hair down, gone out for a night out, like young men do, | :10:49. | :10:59.
they had too much to drink and were intoxicated. Lochte I admitted that | :11:00. | :11:01.
himself, and they got into an argument with people, and they | :11:02. | :11:04.
covered it up. You might go home to your mum and dad and cover up when | :11:05. | :11:10.
you got drunk for the first time. I think the United States Olympic | :11:11. | :11:13.
Committee are very embarrassed about it. Ultimately, if they apologise, | :11:14. | :11:18.
which undoubtedly they will, they will be left off. A few twists and | :11:19. | :11:24.
turns to come. I have been trying to concentrate on my work today but it | :11:25. | :11:29.
was hard not to spend an hour and a half watching the Bradley brothers. | :11:30. | :11:36.
It is fantastic. 1.5 kilometres in the Atlantic, you and I could not | :11:37. | :11:40.
manage 100 metres, I am sure! Then you have 40 kilometres on a bike and | :11:41. | :11:49.
then a 10K run. Alistair was the nominal, no one got close to him | :11:50. | :11:53.
apart from his brother. The defence of his title, no one has done that | :11:54. | :11:58.
before. You have to feel for his brother. He often beats him in | :11:59. | :12:02.
training, Jonathan, but not in contests when it really matters. He | :12:03. | :12:09.
won with such ease. Another British athlete defending their title here, | :12:10. | :12:13.
a bit like Laura Trott, defending their title in Rio. But he did come | :12:14. | :12:18.
in as favourite and with some hot form so he was expected to do well. | :12:19. | :12:23.
We will have more on the Brownlee Brothers in a minute. And a word on | :12:24. | :12:40.
a doping story. A weightlifter has tested positive and has been sent | :12:41. | :12:44.
home so Columbia have picked up their medal. I would much rather be | :12:45. | :12:50.
telling you about tonight's action. We are outside the Olympic Stadium. | :12:51. | :12:56.
Bolt is due to run. The women get a chance to get into the relay final. | :12:57. | :13:01.
Hopefully, we will forget about the doping and until the next episode | :13:02. | :13:06.
comes along, we will forget about Lochte and his three mates on their | :13:07. | :13:09.
night out. Thank you. Full coverage of BB | :13:10. | :13:14.
athletics on the BBC live page. Let's quickly bring up the medal | :13:15. | :13:22.
table. There have been a couple of golds for Great Britain today. It is | :13:23. | :13:28.
first and foremost the gold medals which decide the order. Russia have | :13:29. | :13:33.
more medals overall than Germany but the fact that Germany has one more | :13:34. | :13:37.
gold means it sits above Russia in the medal table. That will chop and | :13:38. | :13:46.
change over the next few days. In a moment, I want to show you | :13:47. | :13:53.
reports by Emma Simpson. She has had a look at robots being used in | :13:54. | :13:58.
Amazon's warehouse which will change how people will be working. | :13:59. | :14:08.
Health experts have criticised the UK Government's plan to weaken their | :14:09. | :14:12.
childhood obesity strategy for England. Several measures which were | :14:13. | :14:20.
in the draft report in March were removed today. Sarah Woolston is | :14:21. | :14:23.
chair of the Health Select Committee. She is one of those who | :14:24. | :14:28.
is disappointed that Sarah Wollaston. | :14:29. | :14:34.
I would like us to see putting promotions and marketing back in the | :14:35. | :14:40.
strategy. It is great the report highlights the importance of making | :14:41. | :14:44.
every contact count, so that those starting to slip into obesity, that | :14:45. | :14:49.
everybody gives advice about how they turn that around. All the | :14:50. | :14:54.
health messages that parents are receiving will be completely | :14:55. | :14:58.
outgunned by the sheer power of advertising and marketing from the | :14:59. | :15:02.
junk food industry. That is very disappointing. Not just advertising | :15:03. | :15:07.
on TV, it is about advertising when children are online. There are times | :15:08. | :15:13.
when they think they are playing a computer game but they are actually | :15:14. | :15:20.
having products sold to them. This is Outside Source. Our lead | :15:21. | :15:24.
story concerns Syria and images of this injured little boy in Aleppo. | :15:25. | :15:29.
It is believed he was her last night in an air strike on a rebel held | :15:30. | :15:37.
area of last night -- it is believed he was hurt last night. | :15:38. | :15:44.
A suspected car bomb has exploded next to a police station in the east | :15:45. | :15:50.
of Turkey. At least three people died, over 100 were injured. This is | :15:51. | :15:54.
the second bomb attack in this part of the country in 24-hour 's. | :15:55. | :15:59.
China and Myanmar have signed deals to build a strategic bridge near | :16:00. | :16:05.
their border. They will build two hospitals as well. Aung San Suu Kyi | :16:06. | :16:11.
has been in Beijing. She holds several government posts and was | :16:12. | :16:16.
heavily involved in this deal. BBC Burmese and BBC Chinese are covering | :16:17. | :16:19.
that story. And a British nurse who was infected | :16:20. | :16:24.
with Ebola is Sarah Leone is facing disciplinary action. It is alleged | :16:25. | :16:29.
she concealed her temperature during checks on her return to the UK. | :16:30. | :16:37.
Many of you will be watching in countries where Uber has shaken up | :16:38. | :16:46.
the taxi industry. Uber have confirmed it will start using self | :16:47. | :16:50.
driving cars in Pittsburgh within the next two weeks. We can bring in | :16:51. | :16:55.
the North American tech correspondent Dave Lee who is live | :16:56. | :17:00.
from San Francisco. Good to have you an Outside Source. How will this | :17:01. | :17:09.
work? Well, it is a very ambitious plan but quite a straightforward | :17:10. | :17:12.
one. Uber will start rolling out these cars in the next two weeks. | :17:13. | :17:14.
People will hail them in the same way they hail Uber at the moment. | :17:15. | :17:20.
They won't know they will get a self driving car and they will see it has | :17:21. | :17:26.
all these gizmos on top to allow it to look around the road. There will | :17:27. | :17:32.
be a driver in the car. They will be sat behind the wheel. They will make | :17:33. | :17:35.
sure nothing goes wrong and it is not careering off the road or | :17:36. | :17:40.
something crazy like that. They will take notes on the performance of the | :17:41. | :17:44.
self driving aspect, and if they have to take control, they will do | :17:45. | :17:49.
that. It is an ambitious plan and one we did not expect to happen for | :17:50. | :17:55.
a few years yet. Does this mean if a company is willing to do it, the | :17:56. | :18:00.
regulations are low a company like Uber to operate something like this? | :18:01. | :18:05.
The regulations put a big emphasis on that driver, the supervisor, | :18:06. | :18:11.
being there. In several years' time there is a hope that these | :18:12. | :18:15.
driverless cars will not even have a steering wheel. I was talking to the | :18:16. | :18:19.
boss of Ford earlier this week and they say they are aiming to have a | :18:20. | :18:23.
completely steering wheel less car on the road by 2021. When it comes | :18:24. | :18:30.
to regulation, that is more difficult. In that instance, you | :18:31. | :18:32.
cannot just take over if something is going wrong. It is within the | :18:33. | :18:39.
regulations but it is halfway to a driverless car. Someone will be sat | :18:40. | :18:43.
there able to drive it normally but for the most part they hope the | :18:44. | :18:48.
computer will do all the work. One other story I want to ask you about, | :18:49. | :18:55.
Twitter say they have suspended an additional 235,000 accounts for | :18:56. | :18:58.
violating policies related to the promotion of terrorism. They say | :18:59. | :19:05.
this brings our overall number of suspensions to 360,000 since the | :19:06. | :19:10.
middle of 2015. There are some big numbers. What are | :19:11. | :19:15.
these accounts? Do we know there are real people behind them? It will be | :19:16. | :19:20.
a mixture of real people and automated accounts which will be | :19:21. | :19:24.
posting propaganda. Twitter has had a difficult year and has been | :19:25. | :19:29.
criticised for some of the content on the site. When it comes to the | :19:30. | :19:33.
terrorism and related accounts they are getting praise for how they deal | :19:34. | :19:38.
with it. Twitter say they will add more tools for users to filter out | :19:39. | :19:44.
abusive comments whether they are terrorism related or trolling. | :19:45. | :19:49.
Twitter seems to get hold of what it begins problem is and that is an | :19:50. | :19:54.
desirable tweets on the platform. Thank you. I saw this story on the | :19:55. | :20:02.
BBC News earlier. It is all about how US athletes who are winning | :20:03. | :20:07.
medals in Rio may be hit with what is being called a victory tax. Take | :20:08. | :20:14.
Simone Biles, for instance. She won four golds and a bronze. She may end | :20:15. | :20:20.
up with a bill of 400 and -- 43,000 dollars. The person who wrote this | :20:21. | :20:26.
article on the BBC News is Sophie Thomas. She is live from New York. | :20:27. | :20:30.
Americans are taxed on global income. Anywhere they are in the | :20:31. | :20:38.
world, they pay tax. If Olympians win a medal in Rio they will be | :20:39. | :20:44.
taxed on the prize money they win and the medal itself, that is | :20:45. | :20:49.
regarded as income. It seems punitive, especially with the medal | :20:50. | :20:53.
which they are unlikely to melt down and sell on. It is crazy. The bronze | :20:54. | :21:04.
medal is worth barely anything. In terms of any leniency here, I'm | :21:05. | :21:08.
saying Simone Biles may get a bill that high but will this definitely | :21:09. | :21:13.
affect all athletes? Right, there are some caveats to that. Olympians | :21:14. | :21:20.
can take tax deductions on the money they spend to train and their | :21:21. | :21:23.
coaches so they can lower their tax bill that way. And Simone Biles has | :21:24. | :21:29.
a lot of endorsements, it is the assumption that she will be taxed in | :21:30. | :21:33.
the highest income bracket. If she was taxed at that level she would | :21:34. | :21:40.
have a very hefty tax bill. Is there any bracket for sports people are | :21:41. | :21:44.
rather a treated like any American working abroad? Athletes are treated | :21:45. | :21:49.
like anybody else even though they can take exemptions for being self | :21:50. | :21:57.
employed. There is no special exemption for American athletes, and | :21:58. | :21:59.
that is separate from other countries in the world which have | :22:00. | :22:05.
similar global tax systems. The Philippines has a similar system of | :22:06. | :22:08.
taxing income worldwide but they have an exemption for Olympic | :22:09. | :22:13.
athletes which means they do not have to pay a tax and the US does | :22:14. | :22:19.
not have that. Thank you, Zoe Thomas. If you want to read her full | :22:20. | :22:25.
article on this tax the US athletes will have to pay, just go to the BBC | :22:26. | :22:30.
News at One. You can download it from an App Store on your smartphone | :22:31. | :22:34.
right now or the BBC website which the vast majority will already know | :22:35. | :22:38.
about. Next, we are going to visit an | :22:39. | :22:43.
Amazon warehouse in the UK. New robots are being introduced and they | :22:44. | :22:47.
are set to change how hundreds of the country's employees will work. | :22:48. | :22:51.
The BBC's Emma Simpson has been to see how. | :22:52. | :23:05.
Instead of a human walking miles each day to pick the | :23:06. | :23:14.
orders, this robot finds the right shelf and takes it to the pickers. | :23:15. | :23:17.
We used to go around, look for it, find the item and then pick it so | :23:18. | :23:22.
Then we get to pick more quantities than we usually would do | :23:23. | :23:30.
There are hundreds of them in this vast warehouse. | :23:31. | :23:41.
The robots use sensors to know where to go | :23:42. | :23:43.
For Amazon it is all about being more efficient and keeping up | :23:44. | :23:49.
Over the past few years we've launched | :23:50. | :23:55.
We do next day deliveries, same day deliveries. | :23:56. | :24:03.
For us to be able to keep up with that with the | :24:04. | :24:06.
growth of the business then this technology allows us to do that. | :24:07. | :24:09.
This task it seems is right for robots, | :24:10. | :24:14.
In America some retailers are trialling them | :24:15. | :24:19.
No more time-consuming stocktaking for staff. | :24:20. | :24:26.
Freeing workers to focus on customers. | :24:27. | :24:31.
Technology is driving big changes in this industry. | :24:32. | :24:35.
Over 60% of jobs within retail are at risk of automation. | :24:36. | :24:37.
That sounds a bit of a worry because there will be fewer jobs | :24:38. | :24:44.
Back at Amazon they insist they are not losing jobs. | :24:45. | :24:54.
They are creating thousands of new posts. | :24:55. | :25:01.
Now an update on the wildfires in California. This is affecting an | :25:02. | :25:24.
area north of San Bernardino, which is east of Los Angeles. It is mostly | :25:25. | :25:30.
forests in this area, there has been a long drought and this area has | :25:31. | :25:36.
been dry. This graphic highlights where the fire is burning. That is | :25:37. | :25:42.
about ten to 15 kilometres across. The yellow area is the evacuation | :25:43. | :25:47.
zone. You can see this image from Nasa taken from space, these three | :25:48. | :25:54.
plumes of smoke here are what is causing the problems. We will keep | :25:55. | :25:57.
you up-to-date as that story develops and we will have another | :25:58. | :26:02.
half-hour of international news in a minute. | :26:03. | :26:06. |
