This is Outside Source. Hundreds of people are feared dead after a | :00:15. | :00:22.
mudslide near the capital of Sierra Leone, Freetown. An entire hill side | :00:23. | :00:26.
collapsed after heavy rains. Residents have been trying to pull | :00:27. | :00:31.
bodies from the rubble with their bare hands. | :00:32. | :00:35.
The President has explicitly condemned racism and racist | :00:36. | :00:39.
violence, he was speaking two days after violence in Charlottesville | :00:40. | :00:44.
that kills one person and injured 19 others. Racism is evil and those who | :00:45. | :00:52.
cause violence are criminals and thugs including the KKK, neo-Nazis, | :00:53. | :00:57.
white supremacists, and other heat groups that are repugnant to | :00:58. | :01:02.
everything we hold dear as Americans. The President of South | :01:03. | :01:07.
Korea, Moon Jae-in, says he is confident Donald Trump will act | :01:08. | :01:12.
responsibly and over north Korea. It is 70 years since India and | :01:13. | :01:16.
Pakistan became independent from Britain, we will speak to an Indian | :01:17. | :01:19.
film director. Welcome to Outside Source. Our top | :01:20. | :01:43.
story. The Red Cross says more than 200 people have been killed with | :01:44. | :01:47.
many more are missing after landslides in Sierra Leone. This | :01:48. | :01:52.
happened on the outskirts of the capital, Freetown, which has been | :01:53. | :01:57.
hit by heavy rain in the last two days. It is understood the worst of | :01:58. | :02:01.
the disaster happened in the full side region. | :02:02. | :02:08.
Snatched video on a mobile phone shows a torrent of mud and water | :02:09. | :02:11.
carrying away everything in its path. | :02:12. | :02:14.
This driver risked his life on a bridge all but overwhelmed | :02:15. | :02:16.
Freetown is an overcrowded coastal city. About 250 bodies have | :02:17. | :02:29.
-- it has few defences against heavy rains. | :02:30. | :02:31.
They come every year but not usually with quite such ferocity. | :02:32. | :02:37.
The authorities fear there could be many more trapped in | :02:38. | :02:44.
I went down to the spot myself and you could see people | :02:45. | :02:49.
using their bare hands, pulling up corpses | :02:50. | :02:50.
The road itself is a disaster area, the road is almost impassable. | :02:51. | :02:57.
There are massive rocks and this area, called Mount Sugarloaf, | :02:58. | :02:59.
caved in in the early hours of this morning and it has covered literally | :03:00. | :03:02.
Hundreds of people are feared dead under the rubble. | :03:03. | :03:14.
There are some ambulances parked here, but it is becoming a recovery | :03:15. | :03:17.
The victims in Sierra Leone are among the world's poorest people. | :03:18. | :03:22.
Survivors risking everything to salvage a few possessions, | :03:23. | :03:24.
trying to hang on to whatever they can despite the rising water. | :03:25. | :03:37.
The head of communications at Sierra Leone's Red Cross spoke to the BBC | :03:38. | :03:46.
earlier and gave us an update. At the moment official figures, | :03:47. | :03:58.
corroborated with the Ministry of health, is a total of 205 dead. The | :03:59. | :04:10.
red cross as usual has been able to mobilise some resources, logistical | :04:11. | :04:19.
resources, people, we have been able to deploy 60 volunteers and staff to | :04:20. | :04:27.
all the affected communities today. Under mounting pressure over his | :04:28. | :04:31.
failure to explicitly condemn the white supremacist group at the | :04:32. | :04:35.
centre of the violence in Virginia on Saturday, Donald Trump has | :04:36. | :04:39.
responded, he has held a news conference. Let us show you some of | :04:40. | :04:41.
what he had to say. Racism is evil, and those who cause | :04:42. | :04:48.
violence in its name are criminals and thugs, | :04:49. | :04:51.
including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate | :04:52. | :04:53.
groups that are repugnant to everything we hold | :04:54. | :04:55.
dear as Americans. We are a nation founded on the truth | :04:56. | :04:58.
that all of us are created equal. We are equal in the eyes | :04:59. | :05:05.
of our Creator, we are equal under the law, and we are equal | :05:06. | :05:08.
under our Constitution. Donald Trump significantly | :05:09. | :05:24.
strengthening his condemnation of Saturday's violence, but the fallout | :05:25. | :05:30.
has already started. A prominent ally of the pharmaceuticals -- eight | :05:31. | :05:37.
boss of the pharmaceuticals company said he is stepping down. He said: | :05:38. | :05:51.
After he had said that, there was a Tweet from Donald Trump: | :05:52. | :06:03.
That was heavy. Just to recap what happened on | :06:04. | :06:08.
Saturday that has led to all this reaction. Dozens were injured in | :06:09. | :06:12.
violent clashes and a woman was killed when a car was rammed into | :06:13. | :06:17.
opposition protesters. We are going to move on to show you the victim. | :06:18. | :06:30.
One of her friends has been talking to us. | :06:31. | :06:41.
Heather always spoke with so much conviction. | :06:42. | :06:45.
Heather stood up for what she believed in. | :06:46. | :06:47.
She just wanted everybody to be equal. | :06:48. | :06:59.
This is 20-year-old James Alex feels, the man accused of killing | :07:00. | :07:16.
Heather. First, their reaction to the words | :07:17. | :07:23.
be heard from the President today. There has been sombre reaction but | :07:24. | :07:27.
finally the President has said what people here have wanted him to say. | :07:28. | :07:34.
When you speak to people here, including Heather's friend, she told | :07:35. | :07:38.
me that what she wanted the President to do was renounce the | :07:39. | :07:42.
heat that came to the streets of Charlottesville on Saturday. She | :07:43. | :07:47.
believes this was a hate crime and it was domestic terrorism. The | :07:48. | :07:51.
language that has come from the Trump administration has slowly ramp | :07:52. | :07:56.
that's on Saturday, but it has taken three days. This is a community | :07:57. | :08:00.
trying to come together meanwhile, around the loss of a 32-year-old | :08:01. | :08:05.
woman who played such a prominent part here. When it comes to Donald | :08:06. | :08:09.
Trump's language, it will be welcomed, but is it too little, too | :08:10. | :08:16.
late? This is a President who has owned the past had the help of the | :08:17. | :08:23.
so-called alt-right and that includes these white supremacists. | :08:24. | :08:31.
Community leaders today say what he has said may not be enough. | :08:32. | :08:36.
Is there still a sense of shock that you could see Nat C flags, civil war | :08:37. | :08:46.
regalia on the streets of America on the 21st-century? | :08:47. | :08:49.
When it comes to this rally, they have been promoting it for months, | :08:50. | :08:56.
the KKK, white supremacists, neo-Nazis, and there have been | :08:57. | :08:58.
skirmishes right across the site, and it is all about a Confederate | :08:59. | :09:05.
statue of General Lee who fought on the proslavery side of the civil | :09:06. | :09:10.
war. It is set for demolition. Civil rights activists have asked for this | :09:11. | :09:15.
demolition. They want a fresh start or America, white supremacists | :09:16. | :09:18.
believe this is getting rid of their history and heritage. There was an | :09:19. | :09:22.
attempt to stop the march, to stop these white supremacists coming to | :09:23. | :09:26.
this quite liberal tone and yet it was not stopped, they went ahead. | :09:27. | :09:31.
There was some anger towards the organisers. A lot of anger towards | :09:32. | :09:36.
those who came to these streets, and many people leave they came here to | :09:37. | :09:40.
cause violence. There were swastikas. There were those giving | :09:41. | :09:45.
natty suits, there were those in foods. Many believe it has no place | :09:46. | :09:55.
here in modern America also -- there were those giving Nazi salutes. | :09:56. | :10:03.
We will have eight report from Pakistan looking at the legacy of | :10:04. | :10:11.
petition. A man has appeared in court in | :10:12. | :10:17.
Norfolk charged with murdering a grandfather in Norfolk as he walked | :10:18. | :10:19.
his dog. 23-year-old Alexander Palmer | :10:20. | :10:22.
appeared via video link from police custody suite at Wyndham, | :10:23. | :10:25.
some miles away from here, his first court appearance, | :10:26. | :10:28.
after being charged in the early hours of this morning | :10:29. | :10:33.
with the murder of Peter Wrighton, a 83-year-old who was out | :10:34. | :10:36.
walking his dog on Saturday 5th He was a retired BT engineer | :10:37. | :10:39.
from a local village, and his body was found in heathland | :10:40. | :10:45.
very close to a path. In a very brief hearing, | :10:46. | :10:49.
no more than two minutes, Alexander Palmer, wearing | :10:50. | :10:54.
what appeared to be a blue sweatshirt and grey trousers, | :10:55. | :11:02.
he seemed to have some stubble, he spoke quite clearly | :11:03. | :11:06.
to confirm his name, He gave his address | :11:07. | :11:08.
as being in the village You are watching Outside Source live | :11:09. | :11:25.
from the BBC newsroom. Hundreds of people are feared dead | :11:26. | :11:30.
after a mudslide in Sierra Leone's capital, Freetown. | :11:31. | :11:37.
Some stories making news across the BBC. The world health organisation | :11:38. | :11:41.
says the number of suspected cases of cholera in Yemen has reached half | :11:42. | :11:47.
a million. Nearly 2000 people have died in the outbreak since the end | :11:48. | :11:53.
of April. A health spokesperson said nearly 500 new cases were being | :11:54. | :11:57.
recorded every day. Former chess champion Garry Kasparov | :11:58. | :12:00.
has come out of retirement for a one-off tournament in Missouri. He | :12:01. | :12:05.
has been out of the game for 12 years after turning his hand to | :12:06. | :12:06.
politics. He managed a draw on his return. And | :12:07. | :12:14.
something you don't see every day, this 306 metre container ship has | :12:15. | :12:18.
run aground off the course of Belgium, in doing so it is blocking | :12:19. | :12:23.
shipping traffic in and out of Antwerp, the second largest | :12:24. | :12:27.
container port in Europe. A large queue of vessels has already formed | :12:28. | :12:35.
behind this. Burkina Faso has declared three days | :12:36. | :12:39.
of national mourning after 18 people were killed at a Turkish restaurant. | :12:40. | :12:45.
This happened overnight in the capital. We want to show you the | :12:46. | :12:50.
moment that two men drove up to the restaurant and opened fire on people | :12:51. | :12:54.
sitting on the terrace. The President has condemned what he cold | :12:55. | :12:58.
the despicable and cowardly terrorist attack. Authorities say | :12:59. | :13:03.
the two attackers were killed. This region has already had its | :13:04. | :13:10.
share of terrorist groups turning up at one time or another. | :13:11. | :13:20.
What does this mean for Burkina Faso? | :13:21. | :13:27.
By Kuyt for joining us on Outside Source. Do we have any idea who that | :13:28. | :13:34.
gun men are? So far we know that gun men came in | :13:35. | :13:39.
on motorbikes and carried out the attack. We know that two of the | :13:40. | :13:48.
attackers died. The unknown variable is who did the attack. Then Burkina | :13:49. | :13:54.
Faso people are wondering who did the attack. They have no idea. This | :13:55. | :14:00.
brings to mind what happened in the country in January, where gunmen... | :14:01. | :14:10.
Not far away. Within two years the country has experienced two attacks, | :14:11. | :14:17.
in January people were killed in a similar attack, Al-Qaeda claims that | :14:18. | :14:28.
attack. Officials are not sure if it was Al-Qaeda that carried out the | :14:29. | :14:33.
attack. But they have a hint that they might have carried out this | :14:34. | :14:38.
attack. What can Government do? I though governments in the region | :14:39. | :14:43.
have been talking about how to prevent this. That is very little | :14:44. | :14:46.
they can do to prevent these attacks. I was in Coutinho Vassell | :14:47. | :14:56.
last month -- in Burkina Faso last month. They have stepped up checks | :14:57. | :15:06.
on the roads. They need to be careful who comes in and who goes | :15:07. | :15:13.
out because of security. Making sure that an attack like this will not | :15:14. | :15:18.
happen. Despite all of these measures it did happen. What can | :15:19. | :15:21.
they do to prevent this? Very little. As is the case almost | :15:22. | :15:27.
everywhere. But critics of the Government are saying that other | :15:28. | :15:33.
than the last couple of weeks that Government and Unionists have been | :15:34. | :15:39.
bickering over issues of safety, and then the lowered their guard. And | :15:40. | :15:47.
the gunmen took the opportunity, almost exactly where they were one | :15:48. | :15:53.
year ago. Thank you for bringing us up to date. | :15:54. | :15:59.
Another story, this time from tenure, the election campaign. -- | :16:00. | :16:19.
this time from Kenya. Raila Odinga has been telling people | :16:20. | :16:25.
to stay away from work. Other people are saying it is time | :16:26. | :16:30.
to move on. Our reporter has this. Many | :16:31. | :16:35.
businesses here have remained closed for almost one week and this has | :16:36. | :16:39.
been because of the anxiety and tension caused by the results of the | :16:40. | :16:44.
presidential election. In some parts we have seen running battles between | :16:45. | :16:48.
supporters of opposition leader Raila Odinga and the police and | :16:49. | :16:57.
traders are weary of security. But today, more activity, public | :16:58. | :17:01.
transport getting out of the city into the capital and other parts of | :17:02. | :17:07.
Western Kenya. Mixed reaction on the streets regarding that call by | :17:08. | :17:11.
opposition leader Raila Odinga for people to boycott work today. | :17:12. | :17:16.
Currently we are having kind of a strike. Most businesses are closed. | :17:17. | :17:22.
But we hope that within the week they will start picking up. The only | :17:23. | :17:27.
thing I want to express as my disappointed -- this appointment | :17:28. | :17:32.
with the way the police handled the residence, the police are supposed | :17:33. | :17:36.
to protect the people, they have a moral duty. The message we are | :17:37. | :17:42.
getting from people on the streets is they want their normal life to | :17:43. | :17:47.
resume but anxiety persists as supporters of the opposition leader | :17:48. | :17:51.
awaits his message tomorrow regarding his next move. | :17:52. | :17:59.
Time now for Outside Source business. And a story we have | :18:00. | :18:05.
touched on already, the boss of a US pharmaceutical company resigning | :18:06. | :18:12.
over the lack of response of President Trump to the | :18:13. | :18:15.
Charlottesville violence. It followed biting criticism of the | :18:16. | :18:23.
handling of that issue by the President. Other big US bosses have | :18:24. | :18:31.
also condemned the violence. This is difficult for the business | :18:32. | :18:34.
friendly President that Donald Trump says he is which it is an | :18:35. | :18:42.
administration that has prided itself on being business friendly. | :18:43. | :18:46.
They have made a big point about talking about tax reform, | :18:47. | :18:49.
infrastructure reform, other policies that would be welcomed by | :18:50. | :18:52.
the business community. A huge number of them have stepped up to be | :18:53. | :18:57.
involved in some of the administration's business councils, | :18:58. | :19:01.
whether strategic, manufacturing councils, to dry and look at how to | :19:02. | :19:06.
create more jobs. What we see now is the chief executive officer of a | :19:07. | :19:10.
pharmaceutical giant taking a position on events over the weekend | :19:11. | :19:14.
and the response of the President to those events. He talked about having | :19:15. | :19:21.
to step down from the council as a matter of personal conscience. The | :19:22. | :19:25.
question now in boardrooms across America is what do other chief | :19:26. | :19:28.
executive officers do? Are they in a position where they have to take a | :19:29. | :19:32.
stand? We are starting to hear some responses. Many of the big names, | :19:33. | :19:41.
General Electric, Pepsi, just to name a couple, condemning what they | :19:42. | :19:47.
saw as violence by white supremacists, saying they are not in | :19:48. | :19:51.
support of hatred and bigotry, but that being said, many of these firms | :19:52. | :19:57.
also choosing to stay on board of these policy-making committees, | :19:58. | :20:00.
saying they think they have a role to play, and for now are seeing with | :20:01. | :20:06.
the President. It is usually a great opportunity to be able to have fifth | :20:07. | :20:10.
year of the President, to go into the White House, to sit on one of | :20:11. | :20:17.
these councils. Yes, Campbells soup, one of the companies on this council | :20:18. | :20:21.
gave as an interesting statement, this is a consumer facing company | :20:22. | :20:27.
that potentially could be subject to criticism, depending on how the | :20:28. | :20:30.
public views their actions, what positions they take. They | :20:31. | :20:35.
specifically came out and said, we think we can do more by being at the | :20:36. | :20:40.
table, having played voice at the table, therefore they want to stay. | :20:41. | :20:44.
We also heard from one of the unions coming forward, saying, they are on | :20:45. | :20:53.
the manufacturing committee, they have not met match, they do not do | :20:54. | :20:56.
what they do. We are still assessing how the business community is | :20:57. | :21:01.
reacting, meantime investors are not to these, the pharmaceutical | :21:02. | :21:09.
company's share price was up to be. One other business story. The value | :21:10. | :21:15.
of the digital currency Bitcoin is surging, it is now trading at more | :21:16. | :21:20.
than $4000 per piece, its value has quadrupled since the start of the | :21:21. | :21:25.
year, it was created electronically, nor one controls the currency, but a | :21:26. | :21:28.
lot of businesses including retailers and stores do except that, | :21:29. | :21:33.
experts say its popularity is growing. In a couple of months there | :21:34. | :21:39.
will be companies that will launch a credit card that will carry other | :21:40. | :21:46.
currencies, you will be able to in theory spends bitcoin using your | :21:47. | :21:53.
credit card. The film industry at the advent of the internet, the | :21:54. | :21:57.
banking industry, incumbency does nothing, others see, they would | :21:58. | :22:07.
hedge their bets. India and Pakistan are marking 70 | :22:08. | :22:10.
years of independence from Britain which came after nearly 200 years of | :22:11. | :22:15.
colonial rule. A view of the pictures coming in from the usual | :22:16. | :22:19.
today. These from Pakistan Vassell ablutions began at the stroke of | :22:20. | :22:26.
midnight, Sunday night. -- from Pakistan where celebrations began at | :22:27. | :22:37.
the stroke of midnight. We have got a fly-past by the | :22:38. | :22:44.
Pakistan air force. It is now Independence Day, it is Tuesday in | :22:45. | :22:48.
India, we will be showing more of that in our next edition of Outside | :22:49. | :22:52.
Source. Let us remind you of what happened seventh decade ago. This is | :22:53. | :22:56.
what the region that bike at the time. After months of political | :22:57. | :23:02.
deadlock but agreed to divide the country in two, the state of | :23:03. | :23:06.
Pakistan was created off to the West and East of India, triggering | :23:07. | :23:11.
perhaps the biggest movement of people outside of war and famine | :23:12. | :23:15.
that the world has ever seen. We think it was about 12 million people | :23:16. | :23:25.
who became refugees, who fled the violence, communities targeting each | :23:26. | :23:28.
other. 1 million people are thought to have died. We can no speak to | :23:29. | :23:31.
somebody who was watching these events, a film director whose family | :23:32. | :23:40.
went to partition. She has been attending a peace rally in India | :23:41. | :23:43.
this evening. Thank you for joining us on Outside Source. Everybody has | :23:44. | :23:49.
a personal story that you have said you feel you grew up in the shadow | :23:50. | :23:58.
of partition. Yes, absolutely. My grandmother 70 years ago was living | :23:59. | :24:04.
in her home with her five small children, and overnight virtually | :24:05. | :24:11.
the violence started, and one day and Indian Army truck came and said, | :24:12. | :24:16.
get on this track now, and she had to leave her home, and for three | :24:17. | :24:23.
days she was on a train, could not get off, no food, no water, her milk | :24:24. | :24:29.
dried up, her youngest child died of starvation. She was in a refugee | :24:30. | :24:34.
camp for many months until finally my grandmother -- my grandfather | :24:35. | :24:42.
actually found her. That is a personal experience of partition. | :24:43. | :24:50.
All my ankles and and and no elderly -- all my uncles and ants are now | :24:51. | :24:56.
elderly. -- and aunts are now elderly. | :24:57. | :25:18.
I have been here doing promotions. Everywhere there is lots of flag | :25:19. | :25:28.
weaving. But this evening I attended a candlelit vigil at the border, | :25:29. | :25:36.
with this organisation, who look to promote peace between India and | :25:37. | :25:40.
Pakistan, and it was a sobering event. The area was very heavy. I | :25:41. | :25:51.
have been to that ceremony before which is very jingoistic, but today | :25:52. | :25:55.
to be standing in the place of 70 years ago people were coming | :25:56. | :25:59.
through... I am sorry, we had to leave it there as we are finishing | :26:00. | :26:02.
the programme. Thank you for being with us on Outside Source. | :26:03. | :26:15.
Our nightly look at the global weather. | :26:16. | :26:17. |
