It's time to move on. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
It's time to look beyond the agreed Ireland that we created 14 years ago, | 0:00:17 | 0:00:22
beyond basic peace and stability. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
A new phase is opening up in our politics, | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
a new phase to guarantee respect and equality | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
to all our people and begin the difficult process | 0:00:31 | 0:00:35
of building peace and prosperity. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
For 40 years the SDLP has promoted the concepts of reconciliation, | 0:00:38 | 0:00:43
social justice and prosperity. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
They were the foundations for the party | 0:00:45 | 0:00:49
and for the Agreement that brought an end to the conflict. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:53
We all celebrate them today. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
But now, 15 years later, isn't it right to ask | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
if enough of the vision has been delivered? | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
In 2012 we welcome the political stability, | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
but should we accept the continued log jam on parading, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:10
on victims, on education | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
and on a shared housing and a shared future? | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
The simple answer is no. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
Peace and stability give us the opportunity to take charge of | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
our own economic future. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
We have to look at the job creation potential | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
of every single pound of public spending | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
and the negative impact of every cutback. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
It's time the Executive focussed more on creating jobs | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
and opportunities. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
After all, it's jobs | 0:01:34 | 0:01:35
and the economy that are going to form the foundations for the future. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:39
I truly believe that if my generation | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
is to have a positive future | 0:01:41 | 0:01:42
then the political process needs to once and for all | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
deal with the legacy of our negative past. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
There's a lot of talk about dealing with the past. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
I'm worried we're papering over it. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:51
We've got to face it. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
And deal with it so we can move on. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
When we make respect our starting point it has the potential | 0:01:55 | 0:01:59
to unlock many things, | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
parading, reconciliation, finding the truth and dealing with the past. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:06
The ambition of the Good Friday Agreement is more than | 0:02:06 | 0:02:10
the very welcome stability, | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
devolution and a united stand against terror. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
It is the full realisation of the values driven by the SDLP | 0:02:15 | 0:02:19
endorsed by the people of Ireland | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
and we are far from achieving all of that potential. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
We need respect, we need fairness, | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
and equality for the most vulnerable people | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
in our society who are experiencing cuts in their lives at the moment. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:34
We stand up for the vulnerable and we stand by them. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:38
We will oppose these savage cuts coming from Westminster | 0:02:38 | 0:02:43
and we will oppose any attack on the welfare of our women, our children, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:48
our people with disabilities, or our senior citizens. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
I worry when I see the same old sectarianism rearing its head again. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:56
That's why it is time to outlaw sectarianism in the same way | 0:02:56 | 0:03:00
as we have done with racism. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
And can I remind you of the SDLP vision | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
of a reconciled, prosperous, united Ireland, | 0:03:06 | 0:03:10
settled in peace? | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
How can we ever really move on | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
if we don't start to look at issues, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
issues like cross-border tourism on an all Ireland basis | 0:03:16 | 0:03:20
and improve our North-South capacity? | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
The SDLP's vision is clear. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
It is about people sharing this island on a fair and equal basis. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:31
The violence that held progress back for years is now over. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:36
We must now unite people and build prosperity. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:43
The time has come to debate and construct a new, modern Ireland. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:46
We now have a golden opportunity and I want to see that happen. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:50
We're not happy with the lack of progress here. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:54
There is clearly a lack of delivery. | 0:03:56 | 0:03:59
But out of this will emerge a new phase | 0:04:01 | 0:04:04
in the politics of this island | 0:04:04 | 0:04:10
with at it's core, values of respect, equality | 0:04:10 | 0:04:15
and an ambition for all to prosper. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:19
SDLP values helped deliver us out of conflict. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:23
SDLP values will deliver again. It's time to move on. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:31 |
