woman on the FA board accuses the league of a culture of sexism. Now | :00:00. | :00:00.
on BBC News, a special edition of Reporters on the Children of Chibok, | :00:00. | :00:00.
presented by Tomi Oladipo from the Nigerian capital Abuja. Welcome to | :00:07. | :00:26.
this special edition. I am here in the capital of Abuja. As we wait for | :00:27. | :00:30.
news of the captured schoolgirls, we have a range of reports from our | :00:31. | :00:34.
correspondents across the region. In this week's programme, the search | :00:35. | :00:44.
for missing girls. John Simpson travels to Borno state, whether | :00:45. | :00:50.
girls were abducted, finding growing anger against the Nigerian | :00:51. | :00:54.
authorities. This is pretty extraordinary. The governor and all | :00:55. | :00:59.
of the rest of us are being thrown out of here by the anger of the | :01:00. | :01:02.
crowd. How safe are Nigeria's schools? We speak to those in fear | :01:03. | :01:10.
of militants. Those wicked people are making me feel frightened. I am | :01:11. | :01:17.
scared to go to school. We speak to the group behind the abductions. And | :01:18. | :01:27.
bring back our girls, Will Ross speaks to the mothers of the | :01:28. | :01:30.
abducted girls, who are going through every parent's worst | :01:31. | :01:35.
nightmare. Whenever I think about her, I feel a deep sadness. I weep | :01:36. | :01:46.
day and night, and hope that God will answer my prayers. It is a | :01:47. | :01:49.
month since militants abducted girls in Nigeria and it has sparked | :01:50. | :02:01.
outrage across the globe. The authorities say that all options | :02:02. | :02:04.
have been considered to free them but there is no question of swapping | :02:05. | :02:07.
any of the girls for prisoners of the insurgency held by the | :02:08. | :02:10.
government. John Simpson travelled to Borno State and found growing | :02:11. | :02:17.
anger. 136 girls, most of whom were Christian until a month ago, | :02:18. | :02:20.
obediently chanted the first part of the Koran, dressed in Hijab. If you | :02:21. | :02:41.
look closely, not all of them are chanting. It is the first sighting | :02:42. | :02:46.
of them, and get more than half of the girls are not here. Either | :02:47. | :02:51.
because they refused to convert or for some other reason. We do not | :02:52. | :02:55.
know. One girl is led to the front of the crowd and told to give a | :02:56. | :02:59.
Muslim name rather than her Christian one. She is clearly | :03:00. | :03:05.
frightened. In the video, the leader, who is said to be | :03:06. | :03:07.
flamboyant, clever and mocking, launches into a long speech. He says | :03:08. | :03:25.
that the girls they are so concerned with have been liberated and have | :03:26. | :03:32.
become Muslims. This man is desperate for news of the girls. He | :03:33. | :03:43.
has made the dangerous journey from Chibok where they were kidnapped | :03:44. | :03:47.
here to Maiduguri. More than six of his relatives were taken. But he | :03:48. | :03:51.
cannot spot them in the video. This must be pretty shocking for you to | :03:52. | :03:59.
see. It is one of the most shocking moments I ever find myself in. This | :04:00. | :04:07.
is inhuman. It is not correct, it is unfair. There is no reason to push | :04:08. | :04:11.
the Islamic religion on them. Everyone has a right to choose. This | :04:12. | :04:19.
whole part of Nigeria is a Boko Haram territory, and to get around | :04:20. | :04:22.
it you need firepower and lots of it. We had 40 official vehicles | :04:23. | :04:36.
packed with armed men to guard us. We were going with the local | :04:37. | :04:39.
governor and heading into the scene of one of the worst attacks here. It | :04:40. | :04:46.
happened last week and it was scarcely reported, even in Nigeria. | :04:47. | :04:51.
This is hostile territory. The road we are on would normally be very | :04:52. | :04:56.
busy, but is almost empty. No one wants to drive along here after all | :04:57. | :05:01.
the attacks. We have been passing deserted villages because people are | :05:02. | :05:07.
scared of Boko Haram. After a couple of hours we reached the town. A | :05:08. | :05:25.
bridge outside of it had been blown up last Wednesday. But two days | :05:26. | :05:31.
earlier it was hit by an army. We counted hundreds of boat out cars. | :05:32. | :05:42.
They massacred 375 people. Again, almost unnoticed by the outside | :05:43. | :05:47.
world. The town centre was simply destroyed. The sheer scale of | :05:48. | :05:50.
destruction is quite extraordinary. I had not expected this. You have to | :05:51. | :05:56.
remember, all the attention around the world has been on the abduction | :05:57. | :06:00.
of the schoolgirls but this is going on all the time in this part of | :06:01. | :06:05.
Nigeria. The governor came here to offer help and money but the | :06:06. | :06:08.
survivors are working themselves into a frenzy of anger that the | :06:09. | :06:11.
Nigerian government should be doing so little to fight Boko Haram. The | :06:12. | :06:27.
government did not help us. I have two ask you, the crowd is getting | :06:28. | :06:32.
quite angry here. There is, of course, the dangers still. We are | :06:33. | :06:37.
going to compensate them all for their losses. Reassure them that we | :06:38. | :06:50.
are responsible for the security. Are you frightened of the attack? I | :06:51. | :06:56.
am not frightened. But there was no calming them. The Governor was lucky | :06:57. | :07:02.
to get away unhurt. This is pretty extraordinary. The governor and the | :07:03. | :07:08.
rest of us are being thrown out of here by the anger of the crowd. We | :07:09. | :07:12.
are having to get back to our cars pretty quickly. All of this anger is | :07:13. | :07:16.
not surprising. People feel utterly abandoned and cannot understand why | :07:17. | :07:20.
a world which cares so much about the missing schoolgirls seems to | :07:21. | :07:22.
care so little about the destruction of an entire town. The capture of | :07:23. | :07:35.
the schoolgirls has raised questions about the security of children in | :07:36. | :07:41.
Nigerian schools. Our correspondent went to a government school in Abuja | :07:42. | :07:45.
to hear how teachers and students feel about their safety. It is | :07:46. | :07:54.
become every school child's nightmare. Even here in the relative | :07:55. | :08:03.
safety of the Nigerian capital of Abuja, the thoughts of the children | :08:04. | :08:06.
are with their kidnapped colleagues. I feel really terrible because they | :08:07. | :08:11.
are girls like me. So no`one knows how they feel. Boko Haram, those | :08:12. | :08:15.
wicked people are making me feel scared and I do not want to go to | :08:16. | :08:27.
school. I am always afraid. Maybe they have not the same food. I feel | :08:28. | :08:31.
sorry for them and I always pray for them. Nigeria is a very big country | :08:32. | :08:37.
and goes like this are part of the reality as well. `` schools like | :08:38. | :08:44.
this. But the mass kidnapping in the north`east has served to highlight | :08:45. | :08:49.
the vicious war that is taking place between the Nigerian government and | :08:50. | :08:59.
the Coho ROM. `` and Boko Haram. They have attacked schools in this | :09:00. | :09:05.
area as well and so they have set up defences around their charges. The | :09:06. | :09:13.
schools are spent. Unlike before, the schools were not fenced. We have | :09:14. | :09:21.
students checking in and out. All visitors and outsiders as well. The | :09:22. | :09:27.
boarding school which was attacked in north`eastern Nigeria would have | :09:28. | :09:38.
needed more than strong fencing. It is in the middle of a war zone. Boko | :09:39. | :09:43.
Haram means western education is a scene. The leader of this union says | :09:44. | :09:48.
hundreds of members have been killed in the Islamist group. These people | :09:49. | :09:55.
will just come from nowhere and target teachers. They are the ones | :09:56. | :10:06.
pushing education. This group does not want that. What they want is | :10:07. | :10:13.
Arabic education. You want to give this education to the young ones. | :10:14. | :10:21.
They are enemy number one. It has come to this. Part of Nigeria are | :10:22. | :10:29.
not safe for schoolchildren or their teachers. The fate of the girls has | :10:30. | :10:38.
sparked worldwide interest and a campaign to free them and has | :10:39. | :10:43.
focused attention on Boko Haram. As Nigeria marks its first anniversary | :10:44. | :10:48.
of a state of emergency against them, we explore what we know about | :10:49. | :10:55.
the Islamist group. More than 100 Nigerian schoolgirls seen this week | :10:56. | :10:58.
for the first time since their abduction, the latest incident in a | :10:59. | :11:04.
campaign of violence. So who are Boko Haram? This man took on the | :11:05. | :11:12.
leadership in 2009, steadily increasing the level of violence. He | :11:13. | :11:20.
took over after the former leader was killed by government sources. He | :11:21. | :11:26.
took over with the aim of creating an Islamist state in the north of | :11:27. | :11:30.
the country. The name of the group loosely translates as" Western | :11:31. | :11:39.
education is forbidden" , opposing outside influences in Nigerian | :11:40. | :11:47.
culture. Are domestic terrorists. `` they are. Their aims are to upset | :11:48. | :11:56.
and undermined the Nigerian state. Starting off with lone gunmen, have | :11:57. | :12:02.
evolved and killed thousands in recent years. Tactics against the | :12:03. | :12:07.
government have not been very effective. I think the group has | :12:08. | :12:14.
become more bold and more sophisticated. The girls were taken | :12:15. | :12:18.
from this town in the northeast of the country, a stronghold for Boko | :12:19. | :12:24.
Haram. For the past year, there has been emergency rule in three states | :12:25. | :12:35.
trying to cope with their violence. Boko Haram draws local support from | :12:36. | :12:40.
the ground with those in poverty who lack education and have ample | :12:41. | :12:46.
funding. At present they have very diversified funding. They are | :12:47. | :12:50.
involved in a number of criminal activities including bank | :12:51. | :12:56.
robberies, and possibly drug trafficking and people smuggling. | :12:57. | :13:00.
They kidnap people for the purposes of extortion and are possibly | :13:01. | :13:02.
getting support from local businesspeople. They are also | :13:03. | :13:12.
getting funding from Al`Qaeda. Estimates of the number of fighters | :13:13. | :13:16.
range from the hundreds to a few thousand. They may be some links `` | :13:17. | :13:30.
their to Al`Qaeda but it is primarily domestic. There are fears | :13:31. | :13:34.
that the insurgency will spread across the borders of Nigeria. Many | :13:35. | :13:39.
have fled to Niger to escape the violence. The insurgents may be | :13:40. | :13:48.
paying to recruit fighters from there. There is little comfort to | :13:49. | :13:57.
take from a sand storm but at least it feels safe here. These Nigerian | :13:58. | :14:01.
refugees were pushed over the border after Boko Haram rated their | :14:02. | :14:06.
village. Nigerians are fleeing I boat. `` by. It is estimated that | :14:07. | :14:14.
thousands crossed into new share each week. This man arrived last | :14:15. | :14:20.
month with his wives and children. TRANSLATION: I was going to bed when | :14:21. | :14:25.
we heard the first gunshots. When we ran to escape, a little girl was | :14:26. | :14:33.
shot as she fled her burning house. He says he counted 50 dead in the | :14:34. | :14:39.
streets. It is a growing refugee rights as but without camps. It is | :14:40. | :14:43.
feared that they could become recruitment centres for Boko Haram. | :14:44. | :14:49.
They have shown that they can hit the Nigerian state in different | :14:50. | :14:52.
ways. Attacking schools and abducting children, burning villages | :14:53. | :14:57.
and much more. Their neighbours are dealing with the consequences of | :14:58. | :15:03.
this violence and the threat of it spilling over is becoming a question | :15:04. | :15:08.
of not if, but when they will strike your. The border is constantly | :15:09. | :15:14.
patrolled and several attacks have been carried out over the past | :15:15. | :15:21.
month. Several men with links to Boko Haram have been arrested. We | :15:22. | :15:25.
have made contact with a local gang who claim they are in contact with | :15:26. | :15:29.
Boko Haram. They agreed to talk to us but demanded that we do not show | :15:30. | :15:35.
their faces. They told us that five of their group have joined the | :15:36. | :15:38.
Nigerian militants and some have already been killed. TRANSLATION: | :15:39. | :15:46.
Some of us are with them now and we give them information about what is | :15:47. | :15:50.
going on. I come to us and we informed them. It they told you to | :15:51. | :15:56.
launch an attack here, would you be ready to do that? Yes, we are ready. | :15:57. | :16:03.
We have no job and so we are ready. That is what we are here for. Boko | :16:04. | :16:11.
Haram have paid them ?2000 to join their insurgency. It is the cash | :16:12. | :16:15.
they are interested in. They have no interest in Sharia law. This region | :16:16. | :16:23.
is fragile and is now threatened ID crisis next door that is fueled by | :16:24. | :16:38.
poverty and neglect. `` by the. Nowhere in Nigeria is now safe from | :16:39. | :16:42.
Boko Haram. But they have also carried out attacks in distant | :16:43. | :16:49.
cities including one two years ago in which 185 people were killed. The | :16:50. | :16:52.
town is still struggling to return to normal. This is what this town is | :16:53. | :16:59.
known for, its trade is primarily in textiles and it has become a major | :17:00. | :17:05.
commercial hub. Now it's state this has been threatened by the upsurge | :17:06. | :17:10.
in violence in recent years. The bloodshed has mostly been in the | :17:11. | :17:16.
north but business has dipped since the attack two years ago. Our | :17:17. | :17:21.
business has gone down and customers do not want to come. They are afraid | :17:22. | :17:28.
to come here. For some it is not possible. Some come through the | :17:29. | :17:38.
border and it is very difficult to get through. It might not be under a | :17:39. | :17:45.
state of emergency but the effects of the violence are clearly being | :17:46. | :17:50.
felt here. It has suffered its own incidents of violence and that has | :17:51. | :17:53.
prompted widespread caution in this centre of commercial of at `` | :17:54. | :18:01.

by their own neighbourhoods to joined this unit which has become a | :18:07. | :18:10.
part of the fight against Boko Haram. They might have the firepower | :18:11. | :18:16.
but they are armed with information which the permit may not have. We | :18:17. | :18:25.
help them in terms of information gathering. We give them vital | :18:26. | :18:31.
information so that we can curtail the issues. We are assisting greatly | :18:32. | :18:37.
and for some time, Boko Haram has come to realise that we are | :18:38. | :18:41.
assisting police. I have killed some of our members but we cannot | :18:42. | :18:48.
relent. There is no song and dance in the worst affected areas. The | :18:49. | :18:55.
violent campaign of Boko Haram will undoubtedly result in more | :18:56. | :19:02.
bloodshed. The schoolgirl abduction * every parent's worst nightmare. | :19:03. | :19:09.
The parents of the girls field powerless `` feel and our `` are | :19:10. | :19:24.
angry at the lack of action by the government. They are in agony not | :19:25. | :19:28.
knowing the fate of their abducted doctors. TRANSLATION: Since they | :19:29. | :19:34.
were taken away, it has been very difficult for us. Many have come to | :19:35. | :19:41.
sympathize with us. Our family stayed awake all night. We wonder | :19:42. | :19:48.
what they are going through and where they are being held. When my | :19:49. | :19:55.
daughter was leaving for school she told me that she would come back | :19:56. | :19:59.
soon and I gave her the money for transport and said goodbye. I was | :20:00. | :20:07.
told that she had been abducted. Since our children were abducted, | :20:08. | :20:12.
life has been difficult for us. We do not sleep well. Most of us fell | :20:13. | :20:18.
sick. I am suffering from high blood pressure. We hardly eat because of | :20:19. | :20:25.
this situation. The president of Nigeria has been accused of not | :20:26. | :20:27.
doing enough to rescue the girls. Seeing as the president admitted | :20:28. | :20:51.
that the girls had not been located let alone rescued, demonstrations | :20:52. | :20:58.
are unlikely to die down. As each day goes by the international | :20:59. | :21:01.
outrage is growing stronger. Beyond putting pressure on the government | :21:02. | :21:06.
to talk about the missing girls, there is no evidence to suggest that | :21:07. | :21:09.
