Welcome to Reporting Scotland. Tonight on your national news: | :00:14. | :00:16.
Edinburgh's billion pound trams project is thrown into chaos as | :00:16. | :00:26.
councillors throw out a plan to take the line into the city centre. | :00:26. | :00:30.
The message to the people of Edinburgh tonight is that all that | :00:30. | :00:36.
she feared would happen has just happened. Instead, backing is given | :00:36. | :00:39.
for trams to stop at Haymarket Station in the west of the city. | :00:39. | :00:41.
Also in the programme: The dangers of epilepsy. These | :00:41. | :00:44.
young women died in their sleep but had not been warned their condition | :00:44. | :00:47.
could kill them. Where is all the venison? A warning | :00:47. | :00:50.
that Scotland could miss out because it cannot produce enough to | :00:50. | :00:58.
meet soaring demand. And Celtic fans sun themselves in | :00:59. | :01:03.
Sion, but can their team win tonight's battle to stay in Europe? | :01:03. | :01:05.
In an extraordinary development, Edinburgh councillors have voted to | :01:05. | :01:09.
cut the route of the city's controversial tram route. It means | :01:09. | :01:12.
the trams will not now come into the city centre and along Princes | :01:12. | :01:17.
Street. Instead, they will terminate at Haymarket in the west | :01:17. | :01:21.
of the city. The original proposal, costing 545 million, was to run | :01:21. | :01:25.
the trams from Edinburgh Airport right down to Granton. After a | :01:25. | :01:27.
bitter contractual dispute and serious technical difficulties, a | :01:27. | :01:31.
revised plan was to spend 1 billion and run them only as far as | :01:31. | :01:36.
St Andrew's Square in the city centre. But this evening, to the | :01:36. | :01:39.
surprise of everyone, councillors have voted to keep the cost to 700 | :01:39. | :01:44.
million and terminate the trams at Haymarket. Our transport | :01:44. | :01:46.
correspondent, David Miller, reports on a day of drama, | :01:46. | :01:56.
:01:56. | :01:57. | ||
surprises and anger in the capital. To juggling Edinburgh's finances | :01:57. | :02:03.
was never going to be easy, with the cost of the tram project set to | :02:03. | :02:07.
exceed 1 billion. But, as councillors gathered this morning, | :02:07. | :02:12.
no one was predicting their political mayhem which lay ahead. | :02:12. | :02:17.
Tonight, Edinburgh City Council's original dream of building a tram | :02:17. | :02:23.
network lies in tatters. The control room stands idle months | :02:23. | :02:30.
after the trams should have been operating. It is quite an important | :02:30. | :02:34.
day for the council. Edinburgh's councillor there was deeply unhappy | :02:34. | :02:42.
as she left the chamber. Her rivals were surprised by their own success. | :02:42. | :02:51.
I am a bit shocked. We believe they he -- they Haymarket option can be | :02:51. | :02:55.
negotiated. We want to get that sorted out before the end of August. | :02:55. | :03:00.
I think it is a devastating decision for the city. By the | :03:00. | :03:03.
people wilfully misunderstood the information they were given, or of | :03:03. | :03:08.
the genuinely did not understand the repercussions. In credibly, | :03:08. | :03:12.
these scenes of destruction and on Princes Street are said to be | :03:12. | :03:17.
repeated. The trams will not now reached the capital's famous | :03:17. | :03:21.
shopping street but the line there are still has to be repaired. The | :03:21. | :03:25.
verdict far the project's opponents is damning. The message tonight for | :03:25. | :03:29.
the people of Edinburgh is that what you're always feared would | :03:29. | :03:35.
happen has happened. With the local elections just months away, | :03:35. | :03:38.
Edinburgh's voters will soon have a chance to pass judgment on their | :03:38. | :03:46.
city councillors. We had been used to drama and | :03:46. | :03:50.
thrills and spills with the study all long. But this is something | :03:50. | :03:55.
quite special. It has been a remarkable day. Even | :03:55. | :04:03.
the most seasoned observers of what recounts safely call now at the | :04:03. | :04:07.
Edinburgh trams fiasco will be scratching their heads in disbelief | :04:07. | :04:10.
today. The Liberal Democrats said the reduced crime we will | :04:10. | :04:15.
inevitably now operate at a 4 million a year loss. Labour, on the | :04:15. | :04:18.
other hand, believe they can deliver the line to a market for | :04:18. | :04:24.
less than 7 million. The say the contractor shall be happy to work | :04:24. | :04:27.
with them to do that. They say there is no real risk of them | :04:27. | :04:33.
walking away in dismay. The pressure now, inevitably, is on | :04:33. | :04:37.
Edinburgh City Council's highly regarded chief executive. She will | :04:37. | :04:42.
have to broker a deal with the main contractor here and it tried to | :04:42. | :04:50.
navigate a way through this particular contract -- contractual | :04:50. | :04:55.
nightmare. A person has been arrested | :04:55. | :04:58.
following an event at Glasgow attended by the Deputy Prime | :04:58. | :05:04.
Minister. It is believed to relate to an alleged to paint bomb. Mr | :05:04. | :05:08.
Nick Clegg was meeting activists in the West End of the city. | :05:08. | :05:10.
Everyone with epilepsy should be warned of the risk of dying | :05:10. | :05:13.
suddenly due to their condition, according to a sheriff. It follows | :05:13. | :05:16.
a fatal accident inquiry into the deaths of two young women who died | :05:16. | :05:19.
in their sleep. Our health correspondent, Eleanor Bradford | :05:19. | :05:29.
been speaking to the families of both women. | :05:29. | :05:33.
She was an intelligent child that cropped qualifier for a place | :05:33. | :05:38.
studying languages at university. Shortly before she went, she was | :05:38. | :05:44.
diagnosed with epilepsy. Seven months later, she was dead. Just | :05:44. | :05:50.
after her funeral, myself and my family and her boyfriend were here | :05:50. | :05:56.
tried to come to terms with what happened. We just thought he did | :05:56. | :06:03.
not die from epilepsy. This woman was just 15 when she died in bed in | :06:03. | :06:13.
:06:13. | :06:14. | ||
similar circumstances. I realised that she had died. Many doctors | :06:14. | :06:17.
decide not to tell people about the dangers of buying from epilepsy. | :06:17. | :06:22.
They feel the risks are too small and it is best not to worry them. | :06:22. | :06:29.
But today the Sheriff decided that the families had -- the dead woman | :06:29. | :06:33.
had the right to know about the dangers so that they could have | :06:33. | :06:40.
taken precautions. Being female, having seizures at night, having | :06:40. | :06:48.
changes in your medication and the sleeping alone, both girls had most | :06:48. | :06:55.
or all of these at risk factors. you reduce the seizures, you reduce | :06:55. | :06:59.
the risk of dying. It is probably the only sure thing. It does not be | :06:59. | :07:05.
sure that you will not die, it reduces your risk of dying. We are | :07:05. | :07:11.
not over-sensitive or over worried about these things. If you fall the | :07:11. | :07:15.
information and do the things you can do to prevent this event, we | :07:15. | :07:19.
just want of that information. We should have been given that | :07:19. | :07:23.
information. During the inquiry, doctors insisted they were right | :07:23. | :07:30.
not to tell the girls about the risks of sudden death. Many people | :07:31. | :07:35.
are not being warned about the risks. | :07:35. | :07:38.

of the three clubs have to say. So join me later. | :08:15. | :08:18.
One of Scotland's biggest engineering outfits has been bought | :08:18. | :08:21.
by an American company in a billion-dollar deal. Clyde Union | :08:21. | :08:24.
Pumps, which included the old Weir's of Cathcart, was sold by | :08:24. | :08:27.
businessman Jim McColl, who started his career at Weir's as a 16-year- | :08:27. | :08:31.
old apprentice. He has been given assurances over jobs and growth but | :08:31. | :08:39.
there is still some disappointment at the loss of Scottish control. | :08:39. | :08:44.
Scotland never likes to lose ownership of any companies, | :08:44. | :08:46.
particularly ones that are so successful and employs so many | :08:46. | :08:50.
people. There were 900 people at Cathcart alone. Having said that, | :08:51. | :08:54.
as long as the safeguards are there to ensure the manufacturing and | :08:54. | :08:58.
engineering which is currently being undertaken in Scotland stays | :08:58. | :09:02.
here, or indeed its developed for the year, that could turn out to be | :09:02. | :09:06.
good. The new owners are a big organisation. | :09:06. | :09:08.
Catriona Renton joins us now from outside Clyde Union Pumps in | :09:08. | :09:11.
Glasgow's south side now. This has been a great success story in | :09:11. | :09:19.
recent years. This is a thriving business, but | :09:19. | :09:28.
there is a tinge of sadness. Clyde Union Pumps, previously known as | :09:28. | :09:31.
Weir Pumps, was set up four years ago by one of Scotland's wealthiest | :09:31. | :09:41.
:09:41. | :09:48. | ||
business men, Jim McColl. He potted for 45 million when that the | :09:48. | :09:53.
company was struggling. Now it is thriving. Its profits have | :09:53. | :09:59.
increased tenfold from 4.5 million to over 40 million. But tonight, | :09:59. | :10:07.
it is owned by an American global engineering company. It was sold | :10:07. | :10:13.
for 750 million. He has made his decision, but it | :10:13. | :10:19.
must be emotional time for him it in some ways. | :10:19. | :10:24.
Yes, he started his career here as an apprentice 45 years ago when he | :10:24. | :10:28.
was just 16 years old. We saw him a couple of weeks ago returning to | :10:28. | :10:36.
the shop floor to speak to workers. He stressed the deal was worth more | :10:36. | :10:41.
than money to him. He sought assurances of the future of the | :10:41. | :10:46.
business. Of course, this is business and there can never be any | :10:46. | :10:52.
long-term guarantees for the future. A police officer who "could not be | :10:52. | :10:55.
bothered" to arrest a suspected robber has been jailed for 12 | :10:55. | :10:58.
months for attempting to pervert the course of justice. Constable | :10:58. | :11:00.
Michele Selby, who is 38, confiscated tools from a man who | :11:00. | :11:03.
claimed to be fixing the door of a restaurant in Kirkintilloch at | :11:03. | :11:07.
5:30am in the morning last July. Glasgow Sheriff Court heard she let | :11:07. | :11:12.
the man go as she had to deliver letters to another police station. | :11:12. | :11:16.
The man known as the Naked Rambler could spend most of the rest of his | :11:16. | :11:19.
life in prison, unless he starts wearing clothes in public. Steven | :11:19. | :11:22.
Gough has been in prison almost continuously for the last five | :11:22. | :11:27.
years and was jailed for another 21 months yesterday. He had been out | :11:27. | :11:30.
of prison for just 60 seconds before being arrested again for | :11:30. | :11:33.
indecency. Lawyers say there is no sign of the authorities relenting | :11:33. | :11:38.
in their approach. And, as Gavin Walker reports, there is no sign of | :11:38. | :11:48.
:11:48. | :11:48. | ||
Gough relenting either. For years, Stephen golf, then they | :11:48. | :11:53.
could rambler's life has been stuck in a seemingly incessant look. | :11:54. | :11:58.
First he is arrested, released, then re-arrested and released and | :11:58. | :12:04.
on and on. He set off from Land's End into the is and five to walk to | :12:04. | :12:07.
John O'Groats. It took him two months to travel the length of | :12:07. | :12:11.
England with the just two minor arrests on the way. In Scotland, it | :12:11. | :12:16.
has been a different story. He has been here for the best part of five | :12:16. | :12:22.
years, almost exclusively in jail and has only made it to death. | :12:22. | :12:25.
is obviously going to say that he is naked into all this task is | :12:26. | :12:32.
committed. The state is saying, knowing You are not. Somebody has | :12:32. | :12:36.
to back down or he is going to spend the rest of his natural life | :12:36. | :12:40.
in prison for crimes that aren't really that CBS. I would have | :12:40. | :12:45.
thought, what is required here is for the state to be the bigger | :12:45. | :12:50.
party, to grow up a bit. There has been a lot of chattered today on | :12:50. | :12:58.
social network sites. Who do they think should back down? I do not | :12:58. | :13:02.
agree with what he is doing. If you have kids walking about, it is a | :13:02. | :13:07.
different story. But do not know, it is a problem. I am broad-minded | :13:07. | :13:13.
about the sort of thing. You do not want your child seeing that. Apart | :13:13. | :13:18.
from that, it seems silly to lock him up for that long. Keeping him | :13:18. | :13:22.
in prison is estimated to have cost of their public hundreds of | :13:22. | :13:26.
thousands of pounds. It is understood the authorities are | :13:26. | :13:29.
trying to negotiate a way out of the stand-off, but so far without | :13:29. | :13:36.
success. The naked rambler has just 650 days, minus time for good | :13:36. | :13:41.
behaviour, to consider his next move. It is the same period of time | :13:41. | :13:46.
that the state has to figure the way out of what is coming and an | :13:46. | :13:50.
embarrassing stand-off. Every day that he remains in prison increases | :13:50. | :14:00.
:14:00. | :14:01. | ||
the cost to the public. That is the A 36-year-old man has been charged | :14:01. | :14:06.
with murder after the death of a man in Perth. Sandy Kelly was found | :14:06. | :14:11.
it seriously injured in the town's North Muirton district on Tuesday | :14:11. | :14:18.

was optimistic about the prospect. I cannot give any guarantees beyond | :15:30. | :15:35.

In the last few minutes, two people have been airlifted to hospital in | :15:46. | :15:53.

were flown by helicopter from 155 miles North east of Aberdeen. It is | :16:00. | :16:03.

putting people -- was putting people off, they were frightened of | :17:03. | :17:09.
it. From top restaurants to home cooking, and Venice and sales have | :17:09. | :17:14.
gone up. Scotland does not produce enough to satisfy the demand. | :17:14. | :17:24.
the last three years sales have increased from 32 million to 43 | :17:24. | :17:28.

more consistent. The size of the portions is good for a small family. | :18:14. | :18:19.
Farmers argue if Scotland is to make the most of this, there needs | :18:19. | :18:24.
to be better education as to be different types of meat available. | :18:24. | :18:28.
There needs to be an increase in the quality of the wild deer being | :18:29. | :18:34.

mega disaster if we went out. this is the bottom of the barrel | :20:05. | :20:11.
for us. Total face -- a total faith in Anima course? It is too early. | :20:11. | :20:17.
Give the guy a chance. He has taken over from a special manager and you | :20:17. | :20:24.
cannot judge in this early. Having missed out on the Champions' League, | :20:24. | :20:29.
there is pressure not to miss out on the Europa League. We want to | :20:29. | :20:35.
play at the top level in Europe. We did not do that at a Champions | :20:35. | :20:39.
League, so that is a blow, but the next thing is Europa League. We | :20:39. | :20:46.
think we have a unique opportunity to get Rangers there. Our fans and | :20:46. | :20:54.
players want it. We would like to qualify for the lead and we will do | :20:54. | :21:00.
everything we can. There was good news, Grigg Wilde having agreed a | :21:01. | :21:06.
five-year deal. Tonight, it is what happens on the pitch and only | :21:06. | :21:14.
victory will do it against Maribor. So Celtic against Sion is | :21:14. | :21:23.
tantalisingly. Fault -- tantalisingly poised. | :21:23. | :21:27.
It is here in the Swiss Alps that Celtic find themselves are not | :21:27. | :21:33.
quite with a mountain to climb, but with the euro but League tie in the | :21:33. | :21:39.
balance. The succession could depend on the fitness of players. | :21:39. | :21:45.
They were training last night. There were some struggles for | :21:45. | :21:50.
fitness this evening. It is a big night also for the manager. It is a | :21:50. | :21:59.
big game for me personally. It is going to be very difficult, they | :21:59. | :22:05.
are an excellent team. If we get one or two players back, we will | :22:05. | :22:11.
have a squad strong enough to make a go of it. Sion lies behind me in | :22:11. | :22:16.
the valley. It is difficult to get to. As you would expect, Celtic | :22:16. | :22:25.
fans have travelled. As usual, they are fairly optimistic. | :22:25. | :22:35.
:22:35. | :22:37. | ||
THE chanting. -- CHANTING. I think we will win it saying. -- | :22:38. | :22:47.
:22:48. | :22:48. | ||
soon. I am quite confident. I love Neil Lennon but he has to get it | :22:48. | :22:52.
right. The travelling fans are always optimistic for some reason. | :22:52. | :22:56.
It is a massive night for Celtic this evening. I have to score order | :22:56. | :23:06.
:23:06. | :23:09. | ||
passports go back in the draw. Some news just in, hipper, Kyle and | :23:09. | :23:14.
Wilson will start for Celtic tonight. | :23:14. | :23:18.
Tonight, Hearts take on Tottenham Hotspur in London. There is about | :23:18. | :23:24.
as much chance of me winning the lottery as then going through. The | :23:24. | :23:28.
manager says the players have something to prove. We have | :23:28. | :23:34.
something to prove every day we go forward. The past is in museums. | :23:34. | :23:44.
:23:44. | :23:44. | ||
Every day, we have to prove our capacity, how much we want to go | :23:45. | :23:48.
and progress. You can follow the progress of the clubs on BBC Radio | :23:48. | :23:58.

The Scottish Cup has a new sponsor a new name for the next three | :24:04. | :24:07.
seasons. One of the all this competitions in world football will | :24:07. | :24:13.
be known as the William Hill Scottish Cup. The deal is worth 1 | :24:13. | :24:17.
million a year to the Scottish Football Association. | :24:18. | :24:22.
Mark Foster is the early leader of the Johnnie Walker Championship at | :24:22. | :24:26.
Gleneagles on six under par after a first round 66, Alastair Forsyth is | :24:26. | :24:32.
the leading Scot on two under. Colin Montgomery has had the usual | :24:32. | :24:36.
events will start after a birdie and an eagle on his first two holes, | :24:36. | :24:41.
followed with back-to-back bogies. He is now one under par after 10 | :24:41. | :24:47.
holes. I do not wish to be the bearer of | :24:47. | :24:57.

This weekend looks pretty miserable. Today it was not to dad -- not too | :25:01. | :25:07.
bad. The showers are easing this evening. We can see that the rain | :25:07. | :25:12.
continues across the Shetland until the early hours. One or two showers | :25:12. | :25:17.
on western coastal areas but much of the mainland dry. Temperatures | :25:17. | :25:24.
overnight no lower than six or nine, one or two of the games down to | :25:24. | :25:29.
three degrees. Friday, similar to today. The showers get going by | :25:30. | :25:34.
mid-morning. They will not be as heavy as what we have seen today. | :25:34. | :25:37.
Pretty widespread across much of the country. There will be some | :25:37. | :25:44.
sunshine and temperatures 17 or 18 degrees. The further east you are, | :25:44. | :25:48.
it will be cooler. Widespread showers but in between, widespread | :25:48. | :25:56.
sunny spells as well. In the north, highs a 15 or 16. Change is coming | :25:56. | :26:00.
in the second half of Friday, thanks to be at low pressure coming | :26:00. | :26:05.
from the North Sea. -- thanks to the low pressure. That will affect | :26:05. | :26:10.
the eastern half of the country on Friday night. We will have | :26:10. | :26:15.
increased wind speeds from the north, followed by rain. For the | :26:15. | :26:20.
first half of the weekend, Saturday does not look good. Pretty wet and | :26:20. | :26:25.
windy. There is a let -- yellow alert in force because the rain | :26:25. | :26:30.
will be heavy at times and the winds will be strong to gale force. | :26:30. | :26:37.
The low pressure hangs around three weekend -- through the weekend. By | :26:38. | :26:41.
the time we get a Sunday it will continue to be miserable across the | :26:41. | :26:46.
Northern Isles and the North East. Wendy across the whole country. | :26:46. | :26:50.
Towards the south-west, it will be less windy, dry and bright, with | :26:51. | :26:58.
house of up to 17. The North East, wet, windy and horrible. | :26:58. | :27:04.
